Friendships can lead to good working relationships -By Harvey Mackay Two friends were walking through a dense jungle. Knowing the dangers, they promised to stick together whatever happened.

Suddenly a tiger appeared in the bushes.

One friend immediately turned and ran, climbing up a tree and leaving his companion behind. He watched as his friend dropped to the ground and played dead.

The man looked up. “He said, ‘Never trust a false friend.’”

Some days, you just need to know you have got a friend.

The point is you need to feel that someone “gets” you and is in your corner. With all the push, pull and tug that can go on in the workplace (and it happens everywhere, folks, even at the good places), you have to develop your own support systems – and friends can be invaluable. Good ones are like rocks; they keep us anchored during our personal storms.

You probably spend most of your waking hours at work, so friendships are natural. Working together can easily turn co-workers into best friends, making jobs more enjoyable and the workplace a home away from home instead of just a way to make a living.

But friendships need to be managed appropriately just like every other workplace relationship. Follow these simple guidelines so neither your friendships nor your job is at risk.

• Limit social chatter. Everyone chats a little at work, but don’t let your friendly conversations overshadow your responsibilities. Stay focused on your job.

• Keep private issues private. When you have problems to discuss, do it over lunch or after work.

• Avoid gossip. Most of us love to talk about other people, but keep your

natural inclination to share rumors about co-workers or managers in check.

If colleagues realize you’re gossiping about them, the backlash could be unpleasant.

• Don’t do each other’s jobs.

Pitching in to help a friend in a crunch is admirable, but keep it to a reasonable limit. Your manager is in charge of assignments and responsibilities, not you. Don’t spend so much time helping a friend do his or her job that you neglect your own.

• Include, don’t exclude. You may prefer the company of your friend, but don’t ignore the rest of your co-workers.

Invite other co-workers to lunch, and include them in your conversations so they don’t feel left out. You may even make new friends by expanding your circle at work.

Being there for another person can offer you huge rewards psychologically as well. After all, part of the joy of a good friendship is being there for the other person when life gets rough – and it does get rough at times for everyone.

Keep in mind the words of Abraham Lincoln – someone who often needed friends along the difficult path of his presidency: “The better part of one’s life consists of one’s friendships.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Dads and Granddads

Some of us are lucky enough to still have a living Dad or Grandpa in our lives. The rest of us have the special memories of them. I have a personal belief that if there are individuals alive, who still remember the deceased person as a living being, the deceased person is still alive. They still pop into our mind when we are performing a task, which we remember them doing. Maybe at a time of a struggle regarding a decision. Maybe at a time of illness. Maybe at a time of spiritual concentration. Maybe at a time when we are by ourselves in preparation for sleep. They had a great influence on us, which brings back memories when a similar experience comes into our lives.

We remember the good times. The fishing, hunting, ball games, shopping, birthday parties, private times, the times they got you out of trouble or the times they defended you when it wasn’t your fault. We remember their faces with a smile of joy, love or contentment.

Maybe it is because we have old pictures showing them looking pleasant. Maybe we still remember the actual time when the picture was taken, Dad really didn’t want to have his picture taken, but Mother insisted, so it was done!

Looking back at the relationships of the past, we frequently see the men as having the final word regarding a decision. The lady of the house usually had her own thoughts about the matter and sometimes voiced them rather loudly. She may slightly change the decision, but what the man of the house finally said was how it was done. When

driving through farm country, I see a farm with a new barn and a house that is rather warn and think maybe in the background a wife is saying, “I’ve wanted this house fixed up for 20 years, but he thinks more of the cows than me.” Hmm. We also remember the times when we were given rather stern directions regarding our actions or decisions.

We now have been trained to avoid these potentially harmful things and sometimes when we notice others doing these things, we think about how our male influences didn’t agree with those actions.

We also remember the times spent working together. The times spent caring for the cattle, milking, cleaning barns, fixing machinery, pulling calves, sowsitting, rock picking, haying, harvesting the grain, raking the yard, cutting wood, fixing fence, filling silo, butchering and processing the cattle, hogs and chickens.

All a part of working together and creating a solid relationship.

My special remembrance of my Grandpa was in the evening, sitting on the step, watching the sun go down, him smoking his pipe and recalling events from his childhood back in the old country. Sometimes he would speak about his parents and sisters, who he left behind in Germany, never to see again. These were very special times, enjoyed at the time and remembered for a lifetime.

Hopefully, you remember those male influences who have passed and those still here on this special day.

Friends are people with whom you care to be yourself. Your soul can be naked with them. They ask you to put on nothing, only to be what you are. They do not want you to be better or worse.

When you are with them, you feel like a prisoner feels who has been declared innocent. You do not have to be on your guard. You can say what you think, as long as it is genuinely you.

Friends understand those contradictions in your nature that lead others to misjudge you. With them you breathe freely. You can avow your little vanities and envies and hates and vicious sparks, your meannesses and absurdities, and in opening them up to friends, they are lost, dissolved on the white ocean of their loyalty.

They understand. You do not have to be careful. You can abuse them, neglect them, tolerate them. Best of all,

you can keep still with them. It does not matter. They like you. They understand.

You can weep with them, sing with them, laugh with them, pray with them.

Through it all – and underneath – they see, know, and love you.

What is a friend? Just one, I repeat, with whom you dare to be yourself.

Obituaries Arlene C. Meyer

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, June 15, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove for Arlene Meyer who passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, June 12 in Melrose, Minnesota. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Arlene Christine Rausch was born April 19, 1933 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Joseph and Catherine (Heinen) Rausch. Arlene married Aloys “Red” Meyer on August 9, 1958 at St. Martin Catholic Church in

St. Martin. They dairy farmed near Meire Grove. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

Survivors include her husband, Aloys “Red” Meyer of Melrose; children, Judy (Steve) Croegaert of Willmar, Sharon (Don) Kluempke of Melrose, Shirley (Randy) Willoughby of Holdingford, Karl (Geri) Meyer of Meire Grove, Marvin (Rita) Meyer of Meire Grove, Glen (Julie) Meyer of Freeport, Carrie (Tim) Kerfeld of St. Rosa, and Kay Kahler of Little Falls; 25 grandchildren; sisters and brother, Margaret Scherer of Freeport, Dorothy (Tom) Koschiol of St. Cloud, Jeanette (John) Steichen of St. Joseph, Donald (Maggie) Rausch of St. Martin, and Catherine (Harold) Meierhofer of Eden Valley.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Gary Kahler; sister, Mildred Meierhofer; brother-in-law, Cyril Scherer; and other in laws, nieces, and nephews.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Donald Edward Fussy Donald Fussy, 82 year old resident of Bowlus, MN passed away at Highland Senior Living in Little Falls on Thursday, June 8. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, June 12 at 10 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Bowlus with Father Greggory Mastey officiating.

Donald Edward Fussy was born August 25, 1934 in Two Rivers, Township, Morrison County to the late Paul and Mathilda (Janski) Fussy. He attended country school as a young boy in Two Rivers. Donald graduated from Royalton High School in 1952. He was united in marriage to Dolores Sobania on May 29, 1963 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Two Rivers Township where they farmed for over 50 years. Donald also hauled canned milk for the Royalton Creamery, hauled cattle to South St. Paul and did custom harvesting.

He was always willing to help neighbors

and family. He was a life-long member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, he was baptized, received the Sacraments, was married in the Parish and served on the parish council, trustee, Eucharistic minister, lector and usher. Donald was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on many boards including: Royalton Creamery, American Dairy Association, American Milk Producers Inc. and Two Rivers Township, where he served as Clerk for many years. He enjoyed watching and attending games of the Minnesota Twins, reading the newspaper, farm magazines, listening to polka music and the farm report on KASM in Albany. Donald respected his friends over the years and attended many funerals to pay his last respects.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dolores Fussy of Bowlus; children, Richard (Cindy) Fussy, Paul Fussy all of Bowlus, John Fussy of Bird Island and Elaine (Chuck) Duret of Bowlus; grandchildren, Michael Gottwalt, Brian Gottwalt, Megan Duret, Madeleine Fussy and Leo Fussy; sonin-law, Steve Gottwalt of Royalton.

Velma Clay, 96 year old resident of Tenino, WA, formerly of Burtrum, MN, passed away on February 28, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church with Pastor Gary Taylor officiating. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 11 AM on Friday at the church. Interment will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Clotho, MN. Arrangements are with Shelley-Gibson Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Velma Celia Ann Johnson was born on February 5, 1920 in Round Prairie Township, MN to the late Claude & Eunice (Scott) Johnson. Velma grew up on a farm in Round Prairie and attended District #40 Country School. She graduated from Long Prairie High School with the class of 1939.

Velma was united in marriage to Zerl E. Clay on July 22, 1939 in Las Vegas, NV. Zerl was serving in the U.S. Navy, therefore;

Velma lived as a military wife moving and living in several places like Long Beach & San Francisco, CA, Great Lakes, IL and Guam until Zerl retired from his 30 year career in the U.S. Navy and they moved back to Burtrum, MN. In MN, Velma and Zerl farmed for a few years then moved to Burtrum, MN where they built and opened a thrift store which they later converted to apartments. In 1979 Velma and Zerl moved to Arizona to enjoy their retirement in a warmer climate. They returned to Burtrum in 2000 where Velma loved being close to family and enjoyed gardening. In 2016 Velma moved to Tenino, WA to live close to her daughter.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Jodi (Yancy) Yungdahl of Tenino, WA; brother, Forrest (Rose) Johnson of Burtrum, MN; 7 grandchildren Maci Yungdahl, Trevor (Hannah) Yungdahl, Jean Frieler, Cathy (Joe) Lyon, David (Lisa) Rahn, Danny (Nancy) Rahn and Vickie Clay; 9 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Innocent S. “Buddy” Roelike Innocent S. “Buddy” Roelike, age 93 of Elrosa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at his home in Lake George Township, Stearns County,

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa with Rev. Peter Kirchner officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Innocent Stephen Roelike was born December 28, 1923 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Anton and Mary (Jaeger) Roelike. He moved to the family farm when he was 2 years old. On June 5, 1946 he was united in marriage to Alfrieda “Frieda” Weber at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Buddy worked the family farm his entire life with Frieda by his side.

Bud enjoyed fishing, bowling, watching all types of sports, taking trips to Vegas, and his gator. He loved giving rides to his sweetie, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Buddy was very devoted to his church, family, and farming. He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa where he was a member of the choir for 75 years. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Catholic

United Financial. Buddy was a loving, caring, and giving person. He loved visits from his family and talking farming.

Survivors include his children, Kathy (Hal) Kampsen of Sauk Centre, Kevin (Sheila) Roelike of Sauk Centre, Norma (Dan) Ellering of Sauk Centre, Don (Betty) Roelike of Belgrade, Larry (LuAnne) Roelike of Sauk Centre, Leon (Diane) Roelike of Sauk Centre, Joel (Joyce) Roelike of Lake Henry, Lisa (Scott) Tullis of Sauk Centre, Gregg (Debra) Roelike of St. Joseph, and Julie (Todd) Ruegemer of Cold Spring; 41 grandchildren; 47 greatgrandchildren with one on the way; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Marie Roelike Messer.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years, Frieda Roelike on April 30, 2017; parents; son, Kenneth Roelike; infant son, Scott Roelike; sisters, Clementine Nichols, Olivia Winter, Hildegard Winter, Alvina Johnson, and an infant sister, Sidonia; and brothers, Werner, Gilbert, Benno, and an infant brother, Reinhard Roelike.

Who are the Peacekeepers?

By Debra Bellman As of today, Jeronimo Yanez is a policeman. He is Hispanic. Philando Castile was a Cafeteria Superintendent in an elementary school. He was Black. On July 6, 2016, Yanez shot to kill, and did kill Castile during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, just north of St. Paul. Castile’s girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter were in the car.

Yanez’s trial is ending today, Monday, June 12, 2017.

Yanez says he feared for his own life.

I believe him.

Since slavery times, Black people have had to take the higher ground in dealing with White people. That is, ignore insults, do whatever is asked of you, be polite, take a beating if you have to, and wear the happy mask. In short, survive. In 2017, Black people are free, but still not equal. To this day, Black parents teach their children, especially the boys, to not mouth off, not make a joke, not show annoyance or impatience or even fear if they are stopped by law enforcement. For their own safety, most Black people, male or female, rich or poor, young or old, famous or not, still must teach themselves to practice perfect self-control, follow all commands, and stay calm and polite no matter what is said or done to them, if they are stopped by police.

Castile did this.

A lot of White people worry that Black people will want revenge for their ancestor’s treatment during slavery, and for having to endure blatant discrimination thereafter. They see Black people as different from them, and scary. Some Whites think Black people are mostly poor and violent.

If my first husband and I had had children, they would be some shade of brown.

I know a lot of black and brown people.

They are just normal folks. None of them are killers, or violent people.

People with permits to carry guns are taught to disclose the fact if they encounter a cop. Castile did this. But, for their own safety, I think Black people with permits to carry should never utter the word gun in the presence of law enforcement. Someone with overt racism or inherent bias is likely to “see” a seatbelt, a wallet, or anything else as a gun when it isn’t. Inherent bias is what people have going on in their heads but aren’t aware of. Whether killed by overt or inherent bias, dead is dead.

Yanez had told Castile to show him his

license. Castile started to get it. Then Yanez told Castile not to reach for his gun. Castile said he wasn’t doing that. Yanez shot him.

Castile’s last words were, “I wasn’t reaching for it.”

Immediately after, when Yanez’s partner asked him why he shot Castile, Yanez said, “I don’t know.” He didn’t mention seeing a gun. During the trial, he claimed he saw a gun.

Castile didn’t deserve it, but if Yanez felt he had to shoot, why not aim for the arm, or hand? And shoot just once, or maybe twice? Yanez, it seems, was not calm.

Should Castile have started to get his driver’s license when ordered to? Or should he have disobeyed and instead raised his hands to be in plain sight of the officer? It’s hard to know what would be safer.

Once, as a young White person, I smoked more pot than I could handle, and drove myself home. At a stop sign, I set my blinker to turn right. I zoned out. I decided to go straight ahead. Someone in a cop car followed me home. It seems this was done for my own safety. But Castile wasn’t driving erratically that day.

Marijuana is calming. Yanez should know this. The smell of it should not have frightened him. And if Castile had recently smoked pot, this doesn’t justify killing him. What kind of testosterone or adrenaline levels were affecting Yanez’s thinking.

What kind of prejudice? It seems Castile resembled someone who robbed a store just days before. Yanez said he was looking for a wide nose. Yes, Black people often have wide noses. But this, also, should not be a death sentence.

Again, I say, Castile did nothing to justify a policeman killing him.

Any war going on between the police and Black people exists in the minds of individuals. We don’t need policemen who see any Black person as inherently dangerous. On the other hand, many police are not racists, or hot heads; but are true peacekeepers, good at their job.

I believe that Yanez feared for his own life. And I believe Castile did not reach for his gun, or have any intention of shooting Yanez. So what is the problem here? Any policeman who would defend Yanez’s actions, or react in the same way that Yanez did, needs to find other work—something that doesn’t involve firearms, so he can’t so easily kill innocent people.

Robert H. Ahrens was born June 2, 1949 in Melrose, Minnesota to Norbert and Caroline (Boeckermann) Ahrens. He attended Long Prairie High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1969 through 1971. On October 6, 1973, he married Jeri Harth at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Bob partnered with his cousin, Dan, owning and operating Dan and Bob’s Sod Service in Brainerd. Bob was an over-the-road truck driver for most of his life until his retirement in 2006. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking wild game, camping, playing cards,

Motorists will encounter daytime delays on Highway 287 between Long Prairie and Grey Eagle as segments of the road are reduced to a single lane beginning Monday, June 19.

The lane closures will occur from sunrise to sunset, and will be complete by the end of June.

Jay and Nina Pazik are proud to announce the birth of their son, Mason Jeremy Pazik, born Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Mason weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 191/2 inches in length.

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reports that on 06-12-2017 at approximately 6:40 pm, their office received a report of a fire at Herbie’s Bar in Sobieski, located approximately 5 miles southwest of Little Falls, MN. When deputies arrived the south end of the building was fully engulfed in flames along with two vehicles.

The Bowlus Fire Department responded and was assisted by the Little Falls Fire Department, Upsala Fire Department and Flensburg Fire Department.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 4 people were inside the bar when the fire started and everyone was able to escape without injury. There were approximately 70 firefighters present at the scene and the building is considered a total loss. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and will be conducting an investigation.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Bowlus Fire Department and First Response Team, Upsala Fire Department and First Response Team, Flensburg Fire Department, Little Falls Fire Department, MN State Patrol, Gold Cross Ambulance, Morrison County Public Works and Rod’s Excavating and Bobcat out of Little Falls, MN.

Many believe that God can only be found in church when they “report” for worship. For some it may be once a week or twice a month. For a few, worship only happens on special days or occasions. Every attempt is made to “discharge” all of their obligations by making one or two trips to church in any given year.

But if God is not worshiped seven days a week it does not seem reasonable that we will truly worship Him one day a week or once a year. Worship that is worthy of Him is something we who are His children are to do consciously and constantly every moment of every day.

It does not matter where we are or what we are doing. We are to offer our words and our work, our hearts and our habits to Him as gestures of love and adoration.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Meeting addresses scheduled shift in biodiesel mandate

A meeting of what’s known as the Biodiesel Task Force was held in St. Paul last Friday at the Dept. of Agriculture. Additional chairs had to be brought into the conference room to accommodate all those in attendance.

The reason for the meeting was to hear from interested parties about the upcoming move by the state changing the mandate from 10 percent bio oil in diesel fuel to 20 percent. This move has been in state law since 2009 and has been postponed once already, but opposition to the higher blend still remains.

Minnesota’s mandate for the use of bio in diesel fuel went into effect nearly eight years ago and began with a B-2 blend, which means a mixture of 98 percent diesel fuel and 2 percent bio. It later ramped up to B-5 and more recently to B-10. According to statute, the final jump to B-20 will take place next year, if all the criteria for making the move are in place. Among those is a requirement that the infrastructure is sufficiently in place so that such a move (to the higher blend) will not cause economic difficulty.

Representatives from pipeline terminals and refining facilities were on hand and gave their concerns about doubling the amount of bio in diesel fuel for the months of April through September.

Their main concerns relate to upgrading pumps and storage facilities to handle the increased amount of bio that would be blended. They talked about longer “wait times” for trucks picking up product at terminals such as the one in Alexandria. The estimated cost to upgrade facilities at each of the various terminals in the state is about $2 million. They said that larger storage tanks would be needed, in addition to faster pumps and metering systems to blend the mixture more quickly.

Representatives from both the Farm Bureau and the Farmers Union spoke in favor of the move to higher blends,

saying the increased use of soybean oil, which is the main type of oil used to blend biodiesel, would mean higher prices for farmers who raise that product.

Before the move to B-20 becomes official, the state commissioners of Agriculture, Commerce, and the Pollution Control Agency must give their approval. All three were at Friday’s meeting and asked questions of those in attendance. It’s expected that they will issue their opinion in late July or early August and, if they give the OK, the move to B-20 during the five warmest months of the year would take place 270 days later.

Most areas finally received some badly needed rain over the weekend. As usually happens this time of year, that precipitation was part of a storm system that dumped large amounts of hail in some locations, along with high winds that caused considerable damage. Recent hot temperatures and strong winds had combined to dry out the topsoil, causing difficulty for some crops to emerge. First cutting of hay went well for most, as we experienced a two-week span with little or no rainfall. I think, for the most part, the top has been taken off yields of crops for the year.

The summer parade season begins in our district this weekend with a celebration at New Munich. The following week has festivities in Melrose as the summer season kicks into high gear. Enjoy this time of year with family and friends!

Burtrum City June 5, 2017 These are unapproved minutes.

The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 5th, 2017 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

Those in attendance included; Ron Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Kevin Rohde, Beau Krueger, Deb VanHavermaet, and Mitchell Bruggenthies.

The meeting minutes from the May 1st, 2017 meeting were read and approved by a motion made

by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Beau Krueger, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted. Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies. The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Beau Kruger, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, Beau Krueger volunteered to get price quotes regarding different types of fencing to keep people from driving through the park grounds. The mayor Ron Strassburg had a bid for the culvert that is to run from Andy Harnes place down to Mitchell Bruggenthies, but the council members have decided to wait. It was suggested to contact the state to see what the process would be to continue it through the road to the other side of the street for the water to run straight out the other side.

Wayne Rohde was present at the meeting, he heard of the discussion at last month’s meeting regarding the possibility of closing 4 alleys in town. He was informed that before anything will be done there will be a public hearing and at that time he will be able to discuss his concern.

Next, in new business, Chad and Tanya Landowski presented that they are looking in the future to put in a new trailer house and wanted to know if this is allowed and what the stipulations would be.

There were no stipulations to this except to purchase a building permit through the city.

Maintenance put in a request for a chain saw for trimming of trees, motioned by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Kevin Rohde.

Scott Hedlund, City Engineer, Maintenance Building reviewed the bid process the City needs to take for the construction of the new Maintenance Building.

Lange moved to approve S.E.H. Engineers to proceed with the preparation of a bidding package, bidding, and structural construction phase submittal review services to construct the new Maintenance Building in at an estimated cost of $14,800, 2nd by Bartells.

Water Rate Concerns: Sheri and Steve Johnson stated concerns about the new water rates. Bryce Louden questioned the financials of the water fund and how it works.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Well #3: Koopmeiners explained to the Council that well #3 has lost approximately 25% of its pumping capacity. He is looking into the issue.

Julian Herbes: Lange moved that summer part time employee Julian Herbes, receive a 5% raise, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Department Report: Lange reported the firefighters are ready for Heritage Days events.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported on a culvert on 130th that needs repair, and that there are many fallen trees that need to be removed before mowing on different roads. Discussion on the crack filling bid. Mike made the motion to accept the bid from Midwest Asphalt, Belgrade, MN. Ray thought the beaver situation was stable for now as the water has gone down near the road right of way. Erv H. had a report of a smashed culvert on Arctic Dr. that needs repair. Spraying of weeds and brush – Ray will check with Carr’s Tree Service. Review of bids for tar project- 3 bids were received. After discussion of what was included in the bids it was determined that one bid was inaccurate, as it had the wrong road listed.

The Board decided to do a reclaiming project on Brakken Road where all the breakups are and to continue tar from 331st on Ascot and then south on 335th to the Township Line. Ray made that motion, Mike made the second, all voted in favor. Motion carried. The lower of the two remaining bids came from Knife River. Ray made the motion to give the project to Knife River, Mike made the second. All voted in favor, Motion carried.

Meeting Date changes: For August the meeting will be held on August 14, for September the meeting will be September 11.

Business Facebook Page Or My Personal Profile Page? - By John Young Small business owners struggle with this one.

Should you only share your business updates to your business page on Facebook or do you let some of that information move over to your personal page?

First off, you NEED to have your business page on Facebook. If you don’t have your business on Facebook, DO IT NOW! I will wait for you.

Just before writing this article, I searched for 5 businesses and in each case, the Facebook business page came up BEFORE the actual website. Yes, you need your business of Facebook!

Next, the personal profile page post or business page post: There are a few situations in play here that make this debate a bit more complicated than, “yes, you need to use your business page for all of your business updates!”

When Facebook first started to really take hold, you could start a business page and it would be seen in the newsfeed of those that followed your page.

It wasn’t uncommon for active business pages to have 10-50% of their fans see any given post during the day.

That changed a few years back with a Facebook algorithm which calculated how much you see from the pages you follow. Now, some pages you really want to see each day are not being shared like they were in the past. Businesses that had 25% or more seeing their posts each day now are lucky to get 1% see a post.

Yet, on your personal profile page, those posts are shown in the newsfeed to those who are on your friends list at a fairly high rate.

So, many have gone to posting their business posts also on their personal page as a way to gain more exposure.

Is this a good idea? I guess the first thing I would look at would be the type of friends that are on your personal profile page. Are they people that would like to see your business posts? Are they potential prospects for your services?

Are only some on your friends’ list potential prospects? These questions need Dan

to be answered before we go too much farther.

Let’s say you are selling a service, but no one on your friends’ list is your ideal customer. Then, it would not make sense to share updates and posts on your personal profile page. Continued posting in this situation will cause friends to block or ‘unfollow’ your posts and can cause hard feelings very quickly.

If you have a percent on your friends’ list that are prospects, there are a few ways to deal with this. First, you could make a custom list of those friends and only direct the business type posts to them and not the rest of your friends’ list on your profile. This takes a bit of time to set up, but in the long run it might be worth it.

If you have the majority of your friends that would be or could be prospects, then I would just post updates right along with your personal profile updates. Just keep in mind to mix up your postings so you aren’t always posting about business and keep those posts at a minimum each week.

Another thought: Think about creating two personal profile Facebook pages if you want to keep your ‘business name profile page’ and personal profile page information separate. An example would be in my situation of having a John Young profile page where I share knowledge and training for DJs, and have a second John Young profile page where I share my personal thoughts and family photos. This would be keeping two different friends’ lists with two personal profile pages which would allow me to keep some things more private.

That would also entail two log in methods to be memorized along with managing two Messenger accounts for direct messages. It can get a bit cumbersome unless you have one device (work computer) set up for the second profile while the rest of your devices are set to the other.

I think the key to take from this is to share the things that are of most interest to your friends or followers. Keep things fun, informational and for heaven’s sake, don’t make it political! No

You may have a situation, once in a blue moon, where you come out ahead on a transaction versus what you paid in. But over the scope of your life, you don’t make money on insurance companies.

The point is this: If you turn in the claim, you’re going to experience a rate increase or cancellation somewhere — at some point — that offsets it. I only turn in substantial claims, meaning claims that are far above the deductible.

Dear Cynthia, I’d pass on this offer. It’s not a good deal.

I’m glad they got some money. I mean, that’s great for them. If they want to do some real estate investing, that’s awesome, too. If they want to give their kids a gift out of the inheritance money, that would be a very nice, generous thing to do. But no, we’re not going for a deal where they have ownership in your home. Things like that end up messy, and it won’t get you where you really want to be. Even if it does, you won’t like the trip!

If you take a deep look into this, you’ll begin to understand there are some things involved that will change the nature of your relationship with your inlaws. Every time you see them and they see you, they’ll see dollar signs. Dinners together will start to taste different, and they’ll feel different, too.

Protect your relationships and your family, Cynthia. Please don’t do it.

Tips for Your Best Father’s Day Yet

By Chris Brown The greatest joy a father can have is serving and caring for his family and community. The more we aim to treat our family like our Father treats us, the more likely they are to live the lives that God wants for them.

This Sunday, set the tone early and prepare to enter the day with a grateful heart — even if you add another necktie to your already-full collection. With these six tips, make Father’s Day this year the best yet, celebrating family as God’s gift to you: 1. Start with no expectations. Not only are you setting yourself up to be grateful, but you won’t be bummed if your expectations aren’t met. Leave these at the door and remind yourself that the day isn’t all about you.

2. Act on your gratitude. Say thank you as much as possible. To store clerks, strangers who hold the door open for you, or friends and extended family members. Be especially purposeful about thanking your spouse and your kids.

Take time to thank God through prayer and reflection as a family. Let everyone hear the reasons why you’re so thankful. Out of the mouth, the heart speaks — Matthew 15 and Luke 6 remind us of this.

3. Simple acts of kindness. If your wife normally cooks, makes the bed or cleans the car, do it for her as a surprise. Maybe your kids are at the age where they’re learning to clean their own room every morning. You may not care to clean your kids’ room for them, but you can grant them one messy day. Completing a chore for your spouse or your kids is a great way to show appreciation for what they do. As Proverbs 11:25 says, those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

4. Encourage thankfulness. I’m proud of the fact that my kids’ childhood is different than mine was, but if I’m not careful, that can create a sense of entitlement in them. I really want to repel that mindset with all my might. How do I do that? I ask them what they are thankful for all the time. If I want my kids to someday be generous, impactful leaders in their families and for the Kingdom, then they need to learn to be thankful. There’s no better day to develop this than on Father’s Day. 5. Be a pen pal. Write to your kids, telling them things you wanted to hear growing up. Our kids want to know that they have what it takes to reach their goals, to be brave and to persevere.

We want to encourage them. We also want to point them toward Christ. Let them know they can do whatever they put their minds to, but it’s because we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.

6. Be present. When spending time with your family and friends, don’t grab your phone every five seconds to check social media. One of the best gifts God has ever entrusted us with is the ability to choose, whether it’s where we spend our time or where our focus is. We need to steward that ability like anything else — His way, and for His glory.

The bottom line is you will be amazed by how much better Father’s Day feels when it’s focused on others.
