Words of wisdom from successful people -By Harvey Mackay With a new influx of college graduates hitting the job market, I thought it would be a good time to share some advice. I started working when I was just 12 years old, with my first newspaper route, and believe me, these lessons apply to jobs and disciplines across the spectrum.

Success requires hard work, but also the willingness to listen to good advice is a skill that can make or break a career.

Why make the same mistakes that people have been making for decades when you can avoid them?

If I had to prioritize, I would say the first thing is to believe in yourself – even when no one else does. Life is not a parabolic curve. It doesn’t go straight up.

There are a lot of lumps and bumps. I’ve never met a successful person who hasn’t had to overcome either a little or a lot of adversity.

Second, there are three things you must know to be successful: 1) Don’t quit.

2) Don’t quit.

3) Don’t quit.

When I graduated from the University of Minnesota a long time ago, I was kind of cocky and thought I knew it all. I thought I’d be able to start at the top and work up. It doesn’t work that way.

I started as an envelope salesman and they threw me the Yellow Pages (that thick book with phone numbers and addresses that we used pre-Internet) and said … “Good luck, kid.” I was having all kinds of problems and one day I asked an old grizzly salesman: How long do you call on a prospect before you stop calling? And he said: “It depends on which one of us dies first.”

Similarly, Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inn, was asked to give the commencement address at his alma mater – even though he never graduated.

He said, “…you only have to work half a day, every day, and it doesn’t matter if it’s the first 12 hours or the last 12 hours.”

“There is no I in team” is more than a sports adage. I like to pass along this message because you cannot do it all by yourself. The boat won’t go if we all don’t row. As Steve Jobs said: “Great things in business are never done by one person.

They’re done by a team of people.”

And the most important piece of advice: Act like your mother is watching.

Unfortunately the business community – of which I am a part – does not get

stellar grades for ethics the past several years. Ethics and integrity must be the cornerstone of your existence. I like to say, if you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters.

Next point: Practice makes perfect.

Not true. You have to add one word.

Perfect practice makes perfect. Practice something time and time again, and if you don’t know what you’re doing wrong, all you’re really doing is perfecting an error.

You’ve put a ceiling on how good you can become. Find a coach or mentor to help you hone your skills.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American philosopher and poet, said: “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Remembrances Some of the things we did as kids have a special place in our memories.

A few of them can be talked about today, but others are things that the younger generation just wouldn’t understand, so they just create a small smile when they pass through our mind.

One experience that was shared by a friend, involved a special pet, Daisy the Ayrshire. This farm family was blessed with 4 boys. Those boys made a pet of an Ayrshire calf. As it grew, it became steadily more attached to the boys. When it became an adult the boys would ride her around the yard, which both the cow and the boys really enjoyed. She would only enter the barn when one of the boys were there and when she became a mother, she only allowed the boys to care for the calf.

Imagine telling this story to young people who had only watched rodeo bull riding.

Imagine the fear today’s mother would have if she knew that her boys were playing at the town lumber yard.

One individual told of their favorite place to play cowboys and Indians. There was an abundance of materials that could be used for forts and hiding places. The problem with this playground seemed to be that the lumber was no longer on the neat piles, not so much that they could get hurt.

Some of you remember the salt block on a metal post in the cow-yard.

The cows would occasionally visit the block for a few licks and then walk away to chew their cud. As a young kid, I

would sometimes go to the salt block and pretend to be licking it, which evidently was very interesting for the cows, who would all gather by me to see what I was doing. I would occasionally get a friendly lick, maybe to see if I tasted salty too.

Sliding down the cellar door. If you were a kid and there was a cellar door, you just had to do it. You probably also remember being told not to do it, since the wood was exposed to weather-created cracks and slivers. A lot of kids remember the slivers you got, both in your hands and behind. Not sure if this was an important life lesson, but it is a preserved memory.

Remember those oval shaped metal seats on the older machinery? Most of them had a fairly large crack in the bottom of the metal seat. When one sat on the seat, your weight would cause the seat to flex at the crack. Your bottom, being placed over the crack, would be exposed to a severe pinch from the crack opening and closing. My Grandfather would cover with a square of deer hide with the hair attached, which solved the problem.

Our outhouse back on the farm had two important residents. One was the wren, who had a nest in one upper front corner. The other front corner was occupied by a really big harry spider. The wren would announce her frequent arrival, which was the morning’s entertainment.

The spider would rise up in a defensive posture if you put your finger too close to it. Both of these residents were there every summer. The spider didn’t fly south for the winter, but must have had a warm nest in which to hide it’s hairy body.

There was usually some kind of rain barrel by the house. The rain water was used to wash ladies hair and also the family laundry. The water from the well was usually very hard and rusty, turning the white clothes a rather beige color. The soft water from the rain barrel would be

Obituaries Dolores M. Burger

D o l o r e s Magdalen (Vos) Burger passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 2nd at the home of her son Allan in Lindstrom, M i n n e s o t a surrounded by family.

Dolores was born January 15, 1917 in Stearns County, Minnesota to Thomas and Rose (Schiller) Vos. She graduated from Holdingford High School, entered nurses’ training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, MN and was an alumni of St. Catherine’s University. She was a night supervisor at St. John’s Hospital in St. Paul for 40 years before retiring in 1982. Dolores and husband John moved to a farm in Afton in the 50’s and to Holdingford in the mid 80’s to care for her mother Rose Vos. Dolores spent many summers in the cottage next to her daughter

Allan (Cheri), Lindstrom, MN; Jeannette Ford, Pensacola, FL; and Thomas J., Clayton, WI; sister Rosemary Heisick, Bloomington, MN, 18 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to All Saints, St. Mary’s Church, Holdingford, MN or the American Red Cross. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at All Saints, St. Mary’s in Holdingford on Thursday, June 20 at 11 am, preceded by visitation at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, with lunch following at the church. Dolores said to tell everyone: “Goodbye...and I’ll see you later!”

Monica was born on July 31, 1929 in St. Rosa, MN to the late Peter and Veronica (Kerfeld) Weber. She was united in marriage to Elmer Van Heel on February 4, 1948 in St. Rosa, MN. To this union 9 children were born. Monica enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, baking and traveling. In 1950

Monica and Elmer purchased their farm in Swanville, MN where she lived until 2016 when she moved to Highland Senior Living in Little Falls, MN. Monica was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN and she was also a member of the Christian Mother’s in Swanville, MN. Her greatest joy in life was her family, she loved spending time with all her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Monica was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Monica is survived by her children, Janice Dorris of Texarkana, TX, Linda (Paul) Ewald of Monticello, David (Karen) Van Heel of Swanville, MN, Karen Bell of Little Falls, MN, Diane (Dan) Slimmer of Royalton, MN, Mark (Sue Choquette) of Swanville, MN, Laurie (Danny) Gradin of Little Falls, MN, Brenda (Matt) Toohey of Chaska, MN and special friend, like a daughter, Lori Wegner of Gilbert, AZ; 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; brothers, Al Weber of Little Falls, MN and Elmer (Louise) Weber of Alliance, OH and sister, Irene Goodstein of Inver Grove Heights, MN and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

William S. “Bill” Schmainda William S. “Bill” Schmainda, age 79, of St. Anna, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019.

Bill was a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be remembered for his independent spirit, sense of humor and loyalty to those that he cherished.

He was born to Stanley and Helen (Dobis) Schmainda in St. Anna, Minnesota on September 6, 1939. Bill, his two brothers and his sister were raised in their home attached to the family business, the “St. Anna Store.” While growing up Bill helped at the store and, to his recall, he probably holds the career record for masses served at Immaculate Conception Church which stood just a short distance from his home. He eventually became the owner of the store and renamed the business Bills Bar. He married Geralyn Rushmeyer on May 6, 1991 and together they created their own wonderful home in Avon Township.

Bill enjoyed animals and his favorites were his dogs Chico and Jocko and his black cat Schmacky who has been looking for his old friend for the last few days. He loved the game of golf, playing as often as he could. He played all around the state in many tournaments with his group of friends.

He was also a master at playing the “spoons” and made a mean bowl of soup or stew.

Bill was a man who had a love of life and a firm understanding of what importantthe simplicity of living a life with those you love. Although he partied with the best of them during his life, he would trade it all for a night at home with his Geralyn, and he did, dying a happy and blessed man.

He is survived by his wife Geralyn, his brother Bob (Elsie), his brother Ron (Pat), his sister Sharon Hron (Tom), his nieces and nephews and many relatives and friends.

Services were held at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Anna on Monday, June 10.

Erich J. Westerman

Erich J. Westerman, 83 year old resident of rural Randall, MN, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at his residence. There will be a private Funeral Service. A Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Interment will be at Bethany Reformed Church Cemetery outside of Clara City, MN. Erich Jan Westermann was born on March 6, 1936 in Campen, Germany to the late Onno and Jannette (Folkerts) Westermann.

He grew up and attended the local schools in Loquard, in the “Ostfriesland” area of northwest Germany. Erich emigrated to the United States in 1955 at the age of 19, and made his way to his uncle’s farm near Clara City, MN. Erich was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Feldman on June 2, 1960 at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City.

They settled on their own farm nearby until 1975, when they purchased a farm in Culdrum Township in Morrison County, MN. Together they raised nine children.

Erich enjoyed all aspects of farming, especially the field work and driving his International tractors. In 1988, he suffered the loss of his wife, Betty. Erich continued farming until his retirement in 2006, although he has continued to help his sons on their farms. Erich was united in marriage to Viola Dalquist on December 2, 2006 in Little Falls and they resided near Randall, MN.

Erich enjoyed listening to Southern Gospel and German hymns and folksongs. He kept track and watched the international soccer matches whenever possible. Erich enjoyed reading and was interested in learning about new and different places. Erich took occasional trips back to Germany to visit relatives and enjoyed receiving visitors at home. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and “pulling their legs” to get a reaction. Erich had a steadfast character and lived his life guided by his strong faith in God. Erich is survived by his wife, Viola Dalquist-Westerman; sons, Blaine (Sheila), Scott (Janell), and Landon (Michelle) Westerman; daughters, Heide Westerman, Andrea Westerman, Erica Evoniuk, Elizabeth Westerman, Jodi Westerman, and Sonja (Loren) Fellbaum; stepsons, Kurt (Julie) and Eric (Kathy) Dalquist; brother, Frank (Grete) Westermann; 17 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Onno and Janette Westermann; wife, Betty Westerman; brother, Dirk Westermann; and sister, Gerda Westermann.

carpenter, seamstress, gardener, hairdresser, cook, and baker. Theresa was known for her homemade hamburger buns, making them up until a couple years ago. She enjoyed playing cards, carbles, watching the birds out her window, and going to the casino for her “therapy.”

She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, where she received all of her holy sacraments. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers.

Faith and prayer were very important to Theresa as she prayed the rosary daily.

Survivors include her children, MaryAnn Vos, Vernon (Maxine) Goebel, Elmer (Kathleen) Goebel, Linus Goebel, all of Albany, and Janice (Don) Warner of St. Joe; 12 grandchildren, 31 greatgrandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild with another on the way; sister, Vera Ritter; and brother, Lawrence Sand.

Theresa E. Goebel, age 101, of St. Anthony, died peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at her home near St. Anthony, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 12 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. concelebrating. Interment was at the parish cemetery.

Theresa Emily Sand was born October 15, 1917 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Nicholas and Anna (Olberding) Sand. On May 23, 1939, she married Norbert Goebel at St. Anthony Catholic Church. The couple farmed most of their married life and they were married for 71 years.

June 9, 2019: At approximately 00:16 the Todd County Sheriffs Office responded to a motorcycle crash on Morrison Line Road in Grey Eagle Township. Donald Meyer was traveling south on Morrison Line Road when he struck a deer with his 2019 Harley Davidson. Meyer was found injured on the roadway and was transported by helicopter to North Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition. Assisting at the crash scene were the Morrison County Sheriffs Office, Minnesota State Patrol and the Upsala Fire Department.

Donald and Laura (Elliot) Boucher will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They met as students at Mayville State University and were married on June 22, 1969. Don and Laura moved to Grey Eagle where they were teachers at the local school and raised their family of three children: Zachary, Leslie, and LeVi. The celebration will be on Saturday, June 22, from 1-4 p.m. at the Double R Bar and Grill in Grey Eagle. A light lunch will be served. Colleagues and former students of the couple are welcome to stop by to congratulate.

Open houses set for roadwork projects on Highway 4 and Highway 55 Area residents, businesses and those who travel on Highway 4 and Highway 55 through Stearns and Kandiyohi Counties, are invited to attend one of two construction open houses for projects, with detours that begin soon.

The first public open house will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Monday, June 17, at Meire Grove City Hall 50 Highway 4, Meire Grove.

The second open house will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Wednesday, June 19, at Paynesville City Hall 221 Washburne Avenue, Paynesville.

Information will be available for both projects at each open house. Attendees will learn project work details, traffic and detour plans, view map layouts, and be able to speak with MnDOT project staff.

The Highway 4 project between Interstate 94 near Sauk Centre and Highway 55 west of Paynesville will close and detour July 8 through October 2019. The detour uses Interstate 94, Highway 71 and Highway 55. Crews will reconstruct 21 miles of road surface using a fulldepth reclamation process and replace 40 pipes beneath the road. The project excludes the cit-

Dear Motor Medics, I have what I think to be a very simple question but when I ask others I get as many different answers as the people I ask. I want to know if it is necessary to connect the last jumper cable connection which is always my negative cable to the engine block instead of right to the battery which seems more convenient to me. I have received many different answers and I just want to know what the proper way is. Can you help me Motor Medics?

-Barb in Henderson, Texas Dear Barb, Great question for the safety of anyone who ever has to jump start a car.

Many people connect the cables directly to the terminals on both batteries claiming it makes it easier to start and this is extremely dangerous! If your battery cables on the vehicle and jumper cables are both in good shape connecting them properly will work just fine. When you make the last connection of the jumper cables it is normal for the connection to give off a small spark. This spark can easily ignite the hydrogen gas given off by a battery under normal operation and cause an explosion. This explosion can be powerful enough to send the sulfuric acid and pieces of battery shrapnel flying towards you injuring you. To prevent this, you need to make the last connection away from the battery which would be the engine block. Always consult your owner’s manual.

I see many new cars not coming with a spare of any kind. When we purchased our latest car, it came this way and in the place of it was a can of tire sealant and an inflator can. The instructions say to use the sealant then if the tire is still low to use the inflator can and use as necessary to reach the nearest place to have it repaired. Why can’t they just make a place for the spare? We have had spares in our vehicles as long as I have been driving and they work just fine, although I have never had to use one since our tires are kept in good shape.

I think the first one I saw was in a Hybrid and if they had wanted one I don’t know where they would have put it. Removing the spare saves weight and every pound you save means a bit more fuel mileage. This combined with other weight savings can make a big impact overall. The tire sealant and inflator can work for smaller leaks but for anything major like a large bolt or other object you will need a tire change to get you going.

Grey Eagle Township June 3, 2019 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe, Also attending were Erv Herdering, Joe Kemper, Tim Otremba and Loren Felbaum.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Mike made the motion to accept the agenda. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the May 6, 2019 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Ron requested a change in agenda order to allow the 335th – Ascot Road discussion to begin. Tim O felt that the workmanship or the top of the road were not the issue here. Ron stated there was not enough tar applied, Tim agreed to fix that part of it. Ray said went from blaming frost boils to the clay bottom, what about the crack down the middle of the road? Tim felt he had done nothing wrong and that the road would likely break up again this year. Could do a reclaiming project and add cement to the mix as it is put back down, then add tar. Some suggestions were to hire an engineering company to look at the road or to visit with other counties who have had these problems and tried the cement process.

One is being done next week near Pierz. The township may not have to do the entire road, but may still be cheaper than just doing all the small areas. Tim O will put together some options and then the Board will be able to get another bid to see which option they plan to follow.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for May. Claims list included claims 33233332 for a total of $27,715.00, which included the first half of the fire contract. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mail included a letter from the State Demographer, putting the Township population at 621 for 2018. A letter from the City of Grey Eagle about the wellhead protection plan, and a letter from the Todd County assessor’s office. Ron had a letter from the US census about new construction plans for 2020.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray spoke about the busy month he had.

Several trees went down with the heavy snow. Beavers are blocking the culverts along several of the Township roads. Ray suggested the Township have someone clear the ditches before we have the mower come through, and that the Township will need to have remarks done before the weight restriction signs can go up. The clerk had a call about the dangers of Chipmunk Road as it enters Hwy 28, and what could be done, perhaps a stop sign? Mike reported that tree branches were hitting the top of the school bus on 337th and should be trimmed this summer.

Additional agenda item: Ron will meet with the insurance representative to look over the town hall. Mary Ann will be attending the Summer Short Courses in St. Cloud.

Upsala City June 3, 2019 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich Crystal Benson, and Lana Bartells.

People present: MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, First Responder Seth Strassberg, Darlene Maciej, Schlenner Wenner Auditor Jon Archer, Public Works Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from May 6, 2019 City Council meeting, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Westrich moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Koopmeiners also presented a quote from Preferred Controls for a new computer screen for the water plant computer. Lange moved to approve the purchase of a computer screen at a cost of $3800.00, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Department Report: Lange explained the Upsala Fire Department has a plan for Heritage Days, they will also have a pumper training coming up.

Bartells move to approve the Gambling Permit for the Upsala Fire Department to hold a raffle on Saturday, August 10, 2019, with no waiting period, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

First Responders: The First Response Team minutes were presented.

Strassberg explained they had 8 calls for the month. They served 170 people at the Memorial Service.

Medical training is coming up for the members to be able to administer more meds. The Department will have a Heritage Days booth set up in the park.

Benson moved to approve the Gambling Permit for the Upsala E.M.S. to hold a raffle on Sunday, October 6, 2019, with no waiting period, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the May Calendar.

Lange moved to purchase an HP desktop computer, monitor and software at a cost that doesn’t exceed $1700.00, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Planning Commission: Lange updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been doing.

Lange moved to approve a lot split – dividing parcel 47.0119.000 located at 410 Walnut Avenue into two parts; east half approximately 24 acres, the west half approximately 18.6 acres, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

UCDC: Benson shared the progress of Heritage Days which

is set for August 9-11. Friday night entertainment is set. There will be a wide variety of food booths on Saturday. Their next meeting will be June 13 at 7:30 pm. They are still finalizing parade judges. They are also looking for a couple of more pie tasting judges. The Fire Department is in charge of the pedal pull contest. The fireworks display location is still being discussed. Raffles tickets are out being sold. Stevens stated the clues for the medallion hunt are done and ready to go. They will be published on the City’s website each morning and there will be hard copies distributed through town each day.

Recreation Board: Report was submitted.

Unfinished Business Crack/Fill/ Pothole Repairs: Johnson stated that he talked to the crack fill company from All Things Asphalt; they will be in Upsala as soon as possible; they are behind due to all the rain.

Heritage Days Funds: Benson updated the Council on where they are at in the process of getting a separate checking account.

New Business: City Audit – Jon Archer Schlenner Wenner Auditor Jon Archer reviewed the Financial Statements with the Council. Benson moved to approve the audit as presented, 2nd

by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Boom Truck from Sytek: Sytek Communications is selling their used boom truck for $4,500.00. If the City chooses not to purchase it at a cost of $4,500.00 it will go on sealed bids. This truck was used by the Public Works Department to put up the winter decorations. Sytek took the decorations down and put up the flags. Koopmeiners explained that the Public Works Department would definitely make use of it – including the winter decorations, flags, changing the lights in the fire hall and maintenance building, tree trimming, city maintenance, etc. Bartells moved have Johnson, Westrich, and Koopmeiners to be on the committee to decide if they want to submit a sealed bid to purchase to boom truck and if so, they are able to submit a bid, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Budget Meetings: Stevens is in charge of setting up a 2019 Fire Department Budget meeting with the Fire Chief, Mayor and the townships and the City of Elmdale before the City Budget meeting.

Lange moved to hold the city budget meeting on July 22, 2019 at 6:30 pm, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Assisted Living: Johnson shared the draft of a potential assisted living to be located in the City.

Acknowledgements: Blessings and gratitude to the Upsala Legion on hosting a wonderful Memorial Day Service and to the First Response Team for providing a picnic lunch afterwards.

The problem is we don’t have the $6,500 registration fee just lying around.

My husband and I are on Baby Step 4 of your plan, so what would you think about us borrowing that amount from our emergency fund? We would still have three months of expenses set aside after paying for the class.

-Camille Dear Camille, I don’t know the exact course you’re talking about, but I do know something about the concept of buying and selling stocks, orday trading, if you want to call it that. I can tell you all the research shows 78 to 84 percent of day traders lose money. And one hundred percent think they won’t be the ones losing out.

That includes people who take courses like the one you mentioned.

I have found no data points which show, on a consistent level across a broad population, that people who take a course like that become wealthy as a result. Buying and selling single stocks is an ultra-high-risk proposition. That’s why I don’t buy any single stocks. Now, I know some people who buy and sell single stocks as a very small percentage of their financial world. It’s almost like a hobby for them. A couple might actually make a little money from time to time, but it’s not the main focus of their investment strategy. To hear them, it’s like listening to fishing stories. They’re always talking about the one that got away.

I wouldn’t waste my money on

the course, Camille—especially my emergency fund money. Your emergency fund is for, say it with me, emergencies only!

-Dave Dear Dave, I’ve got a couple of friends who were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college.

Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this?

-Jeanette Dear Jeanette, So, if a financial planner told you not to get a job because then you can apply for welfare, are you going to listen to that person? What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for something, just so they can pretend they’re poor!

Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke—fraudulently— to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous!

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Items of local interest passed into law

By now, you’ve probably heard or read about the major accomplishments of the recently completed legislative session.

Compromise did occur, as the two sides finally came together and reached agreement on a new budget. We then came back for a marathon one-day special session to pass all the spending bills and send them on to the governor.

In addition to all the headline-making news about budgets and taxes, many other items were also included in those bills. We passed fire remediation for the city of Melrose, with close to a half million dollars available to assist the city in its rebuilding efforts after the fire on Main Street several years ago. Also included was an exemption from paying the state sales tax on materials used in that reconstruction. These items were included in

the massive tax bill.

We also got legislation passed which will help the city of Albany and the KraftHeinz cheese plant located there. Plans for an expansion of the facility were put on hold because additional space was needed to allow that expansion to take place. It wasn’t a large area, less than an acre, between the location of the current plant and the bike path that goes through town. The land is a former railroad bed and belongs to MnDOT. Folks from that department were good to work with as they crafted the legal description of the land needing to be transferred. I had the bill language included in both the transportation bill, along with what’s called the Lands Bill, so we had a better chance of its final passage.

With the transfer of this narrow strip of land, the way has been cleared for the expansion to take place. It’s a major addition to the plant and will allow more production, which is also good news for the dairy industry.

I also carried legislation for two area communities, whose voters last fall approved local option sales taxes. Both Glenwood and Sauk Centre passed those measures, which then had to go before the

Legislature for final approval. I am personally not a big fan of such local taxes, mainly because it creates winners and losers. Cities or counties with large retail sales bases do very well with such a tax, however, in smaller jurisdictions, there’s usually not enough activity to generate the revenue needed to make much of a difference.

There were close to 20 applications for this type of local taxing authority that were heard before the Property Tax Division during this past session. If these numbers continue, I look for changes in how these requests are approved in the future. They may need to be approved by the Legislature first before the question is put on the local ballot for voters to approve.

Cyril Ebnet

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Cyril Ebnet, age 89 of Holdingford, will be 2:30 PM, Saturday, June 15 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Cyril died Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital.

There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM, Friday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford and again after 1:30 PM Saturday at the church. The Holdingford American Legion will pray at 5:30 Friday at the Funeral Home.

Cyril was born April 15, 1930 in Holdingford to Alfred and Regina (Muyres) Ebnet. He entered the U.S. Army in 1952 and served until 1954. He married LaDonna Porupsky on October 2, 1954. He farmed his own farm in Holdingford and was very active in slow-pitch softball. In 1966, Cyril formed the first fast-pitch softball team, they played for four years. In 1971, the baseball field in Holdingford was transformed into a slow-pitch softball field with the formation

The challenges with farming have continued this spring. Difficult planting conditions caused by too much rain have dragged planting far past its optimum dates. I finished up on soybeans last week, having to go around wet spots in fields that simply didn’t dry out. Even the fields that got planted earlier had issues.

In some cases, the ground got so hard that the small seedlings had a difficult time in poking through the crusted earth. I was ready to work up one field again because of the hard ground, but amazingly, enough plants eventually poked through to make the stand count acceptable, especially at this late date.

Cyril is survived by his children, Daryl (Sue) Ebnet, Holdingford; Wayne (Lori) Ebnet, Holdingford; Neil (Joyce) Ebnet, Holdingford and Cheryl Czeck, Holdingford; 11 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren and 1 great-grandchild waiting in the dugout. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Alice (Bob) Maine, Avon; Lloyd (Tillie) Ebnet, Holdingford; Jerome (Kathleen) Ebnet, Holdingford and Linus (Julie) Ebnet, Holdingford.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2019

By Barb Dinkel Goodrich, Crime Victim Advocate, Hands of Hope Resource June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. As Americans, we believe in justice for all. Yet we fail to live up to this promise when we allow older members of our society to be abused or neglected.

Older people are vital, contributing members of American society and the maltreatment diminishes all of us.

Unfortunately, elder abuse is widespread. Every year an estimated 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that elder abuse is significantly under-reported, in part because so many of our communities lack the social supports that would make it easier for those who experience abuse to report it. Research suggests that as few as 1 in 14 cases of abuse come to the attention of authorities.

Collaborative efforts improve water quality in Mississippi River Watershed

There are simple things that can be done to keep the waters in Todd County healthy.

Projects range from something as simple as filtering rain by planting native grasses and shrubs on the shoreline or making a rain garden to absorb rain—to projects that are more involved and utilize the skills and resources of different organizations or agencies.

As a part of the Mississippi River Brainerd Watershed, Todd County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) provides programs that assist area residents as they seek ways to conserve and develop local soil, water, and related resources. The projects undertaken are as varied as the people who implement them.

A recent water-quality project at Little Swan Lake in Todd County is an example of the SWCD assisting with a larger project. What began as a Swanville Public Works project, grew to bringing in SWCD’s involvement to help with resources for shoreland erosion controls/stabilization, and a grassy infiltration trench to catch and treat the runoff from parking lots.

“The runoff from the township road was causing erosion, which allowed pollutants to flow into the lake,” said Deja Anton, district manager of Todd County SWCD. “By removing a previous erosion control method—a cemented rock chute— road runoff now goes down the curbing to a catch basin and is diverted to a wetland on the opposite side of the road.”

“The project went well. The bridge and rock bank were major parts of the project,” said Lonny Hudson, with Swanville’s parks and maintenance department.

“The runoff used to blow out part of the beach. Now with a manhole there and the landscape mesh on the shoreline, the beach stays in good shape.”

Many partnerships were involved in this project, from Todd SWCD to the City of Swanville, a local service club, technical and construction services, and more.

“These Todd County resources show how collaboration can enhance and improve land and water quality,” said Bonnie Finnerty, watershed project manager with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s
