Lessons from animals -By Harvey Mackay In the Upper Midwest, a sure sign of spring and fall is when geese fly overhead, often honking loudly. I recently discovered the reason.

Turns out that Professor Margaret Kuhn’s research revealed that in order to fly long distances, geese rotate their leaders, and they only pick the ones that can handle turbulence.

The other birds honk, not from discomfort, but to encourage their leader.

I’ve shared lessons from animals over the years. Sometimes, they seem so much more advanced than humans; other times, we learn how not to handle problems.

Here are some examples.

If a lobster is left high and dry among rocks, it does not have enough instinct and energy to work its way back to the sea, even though it may only be a few feet away. It waits for the sea to come to it and will die in its tracks.

There are also “human lobsters” in the world that are stranded on the rocks and won’t take a risk. They choose to procrastinate instead of grabbing hold of the problems they face.

Lesson: Taking risks is part of life.

Not taking risks can kill a career.

Thomas J. Watson Jr, who built IBM into a worldwide power loved to retell a story attributed to Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. Each year a man fed wild ducks at a nearby lake before they flew south for the winter. This encouraged some of the ducks to stick around and grow fat and lazy.

The moral is that you can make wild ducks tame, but you can never make tame ducks wild again. And Watson wanted to encourage “wild ducks” at IBM to confront conformity.

Lesson: Letting someone else take care of you prevents you from maximizing your potential.

If you place a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will immediately jump out. However, if you put a frog in room temperature water, it will stay put. But if the temperature gradually increases by 5-10 degrees, the frog continues to stay and becomes groggier and groggier until it can’t climb out of the pot. The frog will sit there and boil because its sense of survival is geared to sudden changes in its environment, not slow gradual changes.

Lesson: Pay attention to changes in your environment or prepare to get burned.

In an experiment, four monkeys were put in a room with a bunch of bananas hanging overhead. Every time a monkey tried to climb up and grab a banana, it got drenched with cold water. Eventually the monkeys caught on, and they quit climbing up after the fruit.

one by one. As the new monkeys tried to climb up after the bananas, the older monkeys would prevent them from climbing. In time, all the original monkeys were replaced. And amazingly, none of the newer group ever tried to climb up to the bananas, even though none of them had ever been splashed with the cold water.

Lesson: Don’t avoid new opportunities just because others have failed or have been warned not to even try.

Ants work as a team in tackling prey, carrying food, and building complex underground tunnels. They work harder than many species just to get through each day, and they do it as a team. No one gets left behind, and no one carries all the weight while others just sit on the sidelines.

Lesson: When you share the burden, you share the rewards.

The zookeepers found a kangaroo wandering outside its enclosure in the wee hours of the morning. They coaxed her back into the enclosure and added a few extra feet of fencing on top. They thought they had solved the issue until they found her wandering outside again the next night. They increased the fence to 20 feet and figured that would be too tall to leap over.

But the next morning, the kangaroo was free again. Another 10 feet of fencing went up, and the zookeepers thought their problem was solved.

A koala had watched the process and was more amused each day. “How high do you think those humans are going to build this cage?” he asked the kangaroo.

“Who knows?” said the kangaroo.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Remembering (2) Remember when retail stores were closed on Sunday out of respect for a holy day. Now in modern times, a lot of small stores are closed every day, but the large stores are allowed to be open every day. Hm Hm. Evidently a requirement from experts to protect our health???

Remember when TV tubes were removed from the TV and taken to the tube testing place at the store to see if some tubes were getting weak, causing your TV to not work? You didn’t want to take the TV to town, since it probably was too heavy for you to lift. Sometimes it would improve the TV’s performance, but if not, the local repairman was called to make a house-call.

One of the things that has disappeared are “rabbit ears.” They were usually decorated with small sheets of aluminum foil for better performance. Their location on top of the TV required constant twisting and turning to get the best reception from the one or two available channels. Since there was no “remote,” it was somewhat of a physical exercise to watch TV, due to the constant changes of wave signal locations and channel preference. Remember when there was a special night when there was no snow on the screen? We would actually be so proud of the clean screen, we would bring it up in conversations during the next week. Today when we get a chance to view a rerun of some of the early programming, we find it very hard to appreciate what we worked so hard to watch in years past.

There was a time when the larger shoe stores had an x-ray machine that would allow the customer to try on a pair of shoes and observe how their foot structure would fit in the shoes they were considering. Those machines are gone. I guess the radiation wasn’t good for the feet. Also, think about a hospital x-ray

today, when the x-ray tech hides behind a lead wall to avoid stray x-rays. I wonder if stray radiation affected shoe store employees.

Today, there is strict law enforcement regarding your age in relation to your ability to buy cigarettes. I remember in years past, when it was possible to buy cigarettes if you had the $.18 needed to buy them. The coin operated cigarette machines were common in restaurants, dance halls, roller skating rinks, bowling alleys and virtually any other place where people gathered. Cigarettes from machines usually cost $.25, because that was what the machine was able to recognize. Comparing today’s $9.00 per pack to yesterday’s $.18 per pack, makes one aware of inflation. I remember when people would say “when cigarettes go over $4.00 per carton, I’m quitting.” To their benefit, some did quit.

Remember when you would go to someone’s place to use the phone?

Suddenly the gas barrel was empty and as it usually happened, it was summertime on the farm and you just had to have gas. You rang the “central keyboard,” who connected you with the gas station so you could order gas. This orderly operation was usually not as easy, since the phone service came from a party line and there frequently were a couple of neighbor ladies using the phone to share the neighborhood gossip. After a half an hour, you would sweetly ask if they would get off, so you could make your call, knowing that they again picked up their phones to hear what was so important that it warranted interrupting their call.

Anyway, it made you feel better knowing that most of the neighborhood now would be informed that you ordered out the gas truck and who you were buying your gas from. By the way, that gas was usually $.25 per gallon and that is about ½ of the tax per gallon charged today.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

Accident: June 4, 2020: At approximately 6:30 p.m., received a report of a one-vehicle accident near the intersection of Cannon Road and 65th Avenue, approximately one mile north of Elmdale, MN in Swanville Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 16-year-old male from Rice, MN was traveling east on Cannon Road. His vehicle went off the road and hit a road approach.

The 16-year-old male and his 17-year-old female passenger from Swanville, MN were transported to the hospital by personal vehicle with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Swanville First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Burglary: Sunday, May 31, 2020: Deputies responded to a burglary at the Sinclair Station in Freeport. The burglary was reported at 6:08 a.m. by one of the workers, who was hiding in the store while this was occurring.

The clerk arrived early and was inside prepping for the day. She said she saw a person dressed in black and wearing a mask near the front door, but didn’t initially think much of it. A few minutes later, she noticed the male and he was carrying an ax. She hid behind the food prep counter in the kitchen area.

The male, along with a female in a pink

sweatshirt, came to the front door. The male used the ax to break the glass out of the door. The male entered the store while the female remained outside on lookout duty. While in the store, the male took numerous lottery tickets and cigarettes. They left the store and ran to the east. They weren’t a hulking couple as the male was described as 5’2” to 5’3” and the female was described as being 5’ and wearing a red mask.

It’s important to note the clerk thought the person who entered the store was a male, but it’s possible, given the height, that it could have been a female. Sgt. Pat Nechanicky from the Melrose Police Department responded to assist. Sgt. Jason Spoden of the Cold Spring Police Department and his K9 partner responded to conduct a track.

After the scene was secured, Sgt. Nechanicky returned to Melrose. On his way back he located the two plastic lottery display cases, minus the lottery tickets, on the county road east of Melrose.

Lt. Vic Weiss and Investigator Troy Jansky responded to take over the investigation. Several stores and businesses in Freeport were contacted for video evidence as well as stores along I-94 in case the two suspects stopped at any other locations along the way.

An ax is not your typical burglary or breaching tool, unless you are a firefighter, so that certainly makes this burglary a little unique, along with the fact an employee was inside the store.

by Hennen Lumber later on in the morning.

Anyone with information on this burglary is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 320-2514240.

Building Fire: June 5, 2020: At 5:56 p.m., deputies responded to a building fire in the 43000 block of 155th Avenue in Holding Township, 2 miles east of Holdingford.

Homeowner, George Bieniek, 86, of Holdingford, stated his detached garage was one fire.

Holdingford Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire.

According to Mr. Bieniek, he believed the fire started near the electrical panel in the shed.

The garage is considered a complete loss. No one was injured.

Another benefit is where relationships are concerned. Money problems and fights over money are the leading causes of divorce in America. I’ve seen how proper budgeting principles can bring a sense of healing, hope, and restoration to families.

During budget meetings, couples learn to talk to each other like never before. They open up, share their dreams and fears, learn how to draw boundaries, and plan for the future. And this benefit isn’t just for the married crowd. Folks who are single can develop more personal discipline, and find accountability, that has an impact on their relationships, too.

It’s tempting to think the idea of “on paper, on purpose” is nothing but a catchphrase. But it’s so much more.

Budgeting is absolutely the key to gaining control of your finances!

Rita E. Niehaus

Rita E. Niehaus, age 94 of Melrose, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Rita Elizabeth Kerfeld was born July 1, 1925 in Freeport, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Koetter) Kerfeld. Rita grew up on the family farm near Freeport. She was united in marriage to Albert “Albie” Niehaus on June 15, 1948 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Rita helped Albie on their dairy farm until their retirement. In her younger years, Rita loved dancing to old time music and after retirement, she enjoyed spending time in her garden.

She was an active member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include her daughters, Judine Beuning and her husband, James of Albany, Teresa Kaschmitter and her husband, John of Paynesville, and Margo Niehaus (Curt Geris) of Alexandria; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Albie” Niehaus on April 14, 2004; parents; sisters, Adella Blommel, Elenore Herzog, Marie Eiynck, and Olivia Eiynck; and brothers, Lawrence, Hubert, and Raymond Kerfeld.

Loren D. Schwanke

Loren D. Schwanke, age 63 of Rice, died peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at his home in Rice, Minnesota.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Loren Dean Schwanke was born December 20, 1956 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Dean and Magdalen “Toots” (Gerads) Schwanke. He graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1976. Loren enjoyed his crop-dusting service, farming, and later was employed at Electrolux. He retired in 2019.

Loren was the middle of three boys and was a very kind, loving, and gentle soul. He enjoyed his family and especially his hunting trips with his dad.

Survivors include his mother, Magdalen “Toots” Schwanke; brothers, Ron (Susan) Schwanke and Lee (Mary Lynn) Schwanke; nieces and nephews, Brittany, Brock, Bowen, Patrick, and Erin; and two great-nieces.

Loren was preceded in death by his father, Dean Schwanke in 2008; grandparents, Carl and Loretta Gerads and Walter and Katie Schwanke.

Audrey B. Pflueger

Audrey B. Pflueger, age 64 of St. Francis of Assisi, passed away Thursday, June 4th.

2020 at her home of natural causes.

A visitation will be held at her home, 44156 205th Ave, Albany, MN from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, 2020; with parish prayers at 6 p.m. followed by the rosary. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, June 13th, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, rural Freeport with immediate family. A public graveside service will be held immediately following mass, with social distancing advised.

Audrey was born December 14, 1955, on her older brother’s 11th birthday, in St. Cloud, MN to Alfred and Hilda (Ressemann) Kunkel.

She graduated in 1974 from Kimball High School. She then moved to Litchfield, MN and worked at Anderson Chemical Company, then Fingerhut. In 1976 she moved to Albany, MN and worked at Mastermark Plastics where she met her “Sweet Baboo”, LeRoy Pflueger. They married at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Kimball on November 12, 1977.

They had 14 children. She was president of the Holdingford Home & School Association & Holdingford PTA, active in Jaycee Women (Women of Today) in Holdingford, president of the St. Francis Christian Mothers for 8 years, assistant director of the Journey with Jesus play. She taught religion for many years to 1st, 6th, 9th & confirmation classes. She also held various jobs from photographer, to baker, to bartending all the while raising 6 girls and being a farm wife. She enjoyed volunteering at the school when her children were younger.

She was involved with the St. Francis Sewing Circle and enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, gardening, baking, driving tractor, shopping, and going to auctions.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, LeRoy Pflueger of St. Francis of Assisi, daughters, Andrea (James) Douvier of Upsala, Susan (Darrell) Geise of North Prairie, Jessica (Brian) Donabauer of St. Anthony, Amber (Josh) Sobania of Holdingford, Becky Pelkey (Jeff Gondeck) of St. Joseph, & Samantha (Chris) Jessen of Sartell. Special nephew Doug (Jan Krippner) Legatt of Holdingford. Grace V. Finken, age 82 of St. Rosa, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2020 at Lakewood Health Systems in Staples, Minnesota.

A graveside service, open to the public, will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, June 11 at Bear Head Union Cemetery near Swanville with Rev. Dan Walz officiating.

Grace Vivian Hanson was born May 5, 1938 in Culdrum Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to Frank and Gladys (Martin) Hanson. On February 11, 1956, she married LeRoy Finken Sr. in Mason City, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in the Twin Cities and Alexandria and then settled in St. Rosa, where he they raised their seven children.

Grace was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. She enjoyed traveling with LeRoy in their Winnebago, going to the casino, bowling with the girls in Melrose, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Summer was Grace’s favorite time of the year. She looked forward to a new garden and canning her pickles each year. She was an avid 2nd hand store and garage sale shopper. She enjoyed buying things for others and most of all, getting a good deal.

Survivors include her children, Allen Finken of St. Rosa, LeRoy Jr. (Betty “Sis”) Finken of St. Rosa, Brien (Therese) Finken of St. Rosa, Marven (Kim) Finken of Freeport, Troy (Brenda) Finken of Montrose, and Gena (Brent) Parish of St. Rosa; 31 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren; brothers, John Hanson and Burt Hanson; and sisters, Bernice Kay and Viola Hanson.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy “Fritz” Finken Sr. on December 4, 2018; parents; son, Keven Finken; brothers, DeWayne Hanson and Vernon “Vernie” Hanson; and sister, Irene Kittleson.

Drive By Visitation was held Sunday, June 7, 2020 at the Iten Funeral Home, Browerville for Roger Becker, 84, who passed away June 3, 2020.

Roger was born June 15, 1935, in Long Prairie to Jacob & Edna (Asmus) Becker.

He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Long Prairie Township. He attended District 38 through the 8th grade and graduated from the Long Prairie High School in 1953. On August 24, 1958, Roger married Karen E. Drevlow. Roger worked at Hart Press-Banta for 40 years. After retirement, he learned how to play the concertina and sharpened knives for people. In his early years he played with the Six Jolly Fellows Dance Band and was the hottest fastpitch softball pitcher in the area!

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob & Edna, In-laws, John J & Margaret (Lemke) Drevlow.

Richard L. Strassburg

Richard L. Strassburg, age 64 of Burtrum, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota.

A public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.

Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church in Burtrum.

A funeral service open to the public will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 8 at Faith Community Church in Burtrum with Pastor Terry Wardlaw officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle following the service.

Richard was born May 14, 1956 in Zumbrota, Minnesota to the parents of Lloyd and Dorothy (Wildman) Strassburg. He lived most of his life in Burtrum. Richard worked in a variety of jobs before finding what he enjoyed most, driving truck. He really was a jack of all trades and the hardest working man that we knew. In 1977, he married the love of his life, Debbie Rosenow. Together they had four children, Emmet, Shawn, Kimberly, and Kaila. He loved all of his grandkids and there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them.

Richard enjoyed spending time with all of his family, camping, mowing lawn, and sitting in his chair at the dining room table drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and eating Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Richard passed away unexpectedly doing what he loved, driving truck.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie of Burtrum; children, Emmet (Jess) of Sauk Rapids, Shawn (Heather) of Long Prairie, and Kaila (Kodeiy) of Cushing; grandchildren, Justin, Shelby, Rosalie, Colin, Alyssa, Chantel, Hailey, Tianna, Kieara, Natalya, Daisie Jean, Tim, and Taylin; parents, Lloyd and Dorothy; siblings, Ray (Margie), Randy (Bonita), Deb (Barney), and Ron. Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly.

Harold “Bud” Biskey

Harold “Bud” Biskey, 96 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2020, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating.

Burial will take place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. A visitation will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Military Rites will be conducted by the Swanville American Legion Post #313 and VFW Post #6037.

Harold Herman Biskey was born on August 27, 1923 in Long Prairie, MN to the late George and Lydia (Lackmann) Biskey.

Bud was united in marriage to Beverly Pehrson on May 10, 1986. He was very proud of his service in the army as a combat soldier serving under General Patton. He was wounded in action on February 13, 1945, in Germany. He was honorably discharged on June 27, 1946. Bud was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, amateur inventor and a great storyteller. He was a member of the Swanville VFW, Swanville Legion, Swanville Lions and Chapter 12 DAV. Bud was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren.

Bud is survived by his wife, Beverly Biskey; sons, Jim (Erlana) Biskey, Glenn Pagel, Jeff (Lynn) Pagel; daughters, Linda (Gary) Gaudreau, Roxanne (Keith) Oswald, Vicki Wallin, Barb Robinson, Kathryn Halsteal; 26 grandchildren, 46 greatgrandchildren with one on the way and 7 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Don Biskey, Robert Biskey, Dean (Linda) Biskey; sister-in-law, Lois Bense.

Alice T. Boeckermann

Alice Theresa Boeckermann passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at the Country Manor in Sartell with her family close by.

A private family service was held at PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose, Minnesota. Graveside service was held Friday, June 5 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Alice was born on February 13, 1927 to Henry and Mary (Hemmesch) Loecken in Spring Hill, Minnesota. She lived on a farm in Spring Hill until she was 16, when she moved to Melrose with her mother and younger siblings. Alice married Alphonse Joseph Boeckermann on October 9, 1947. After moving around for a few years, they settled in Melrose where they raised their 4 children.

Alice is survived by her sons, Daniel (Marilyn) Boeckermann, Chanhassen and Dennis (Cindee Koll) Boeckermann, St. Cloud; daughter, Donna (Andrew) Fowler, Woodstock, Illinois; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse; son, Leon; granddaughter, Jamie; parents; and eight siblings.

Alice was a member of the SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and St. Mary’s Christian Mothers. She worked for 20 years at the Melrose Locker Plant and ended her working life as a cook/baker at Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose.

Alice loved her family and her pets. Her joy was entertaining family for the holidays.

She made holidays and birthdays special, with lots of decorations, good food and love. Playing cards was a favorite pastime, especially the card club she belonged to for many years. Baking was another great pleasure, but Alice was most proud of her

pies, always offering to contribute to any occasion. Alice loved fishing and would often catch more than anyone with her own special technique.

Alice was the last of a feisty family that endured hard times but worked hard to do better for their families. Despite hardships, Alice had a great joy for life. She loved dancing, even dancing to the music in department stores. She loved to tease people, giving the target a sassy grin. She was always up for an adventure. After retiring she did several bus tours around the US and traveled to Germany three times to visit relatives. She took a ride on a Harley with her son Dennis and rode a jet ski with her son Daniel. Alice was not a perfect person, but she never stinted on her love. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Graveside services were held Monday June 8, 2020 at St. Hedwig’s Cemetery in Holdingford for Melvin J. Kollodge, age 95, of Holdingford who died peacefully June 5, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Melvin was born on December 14, 1924 to Joseph and Catherine (Kasko) Kollodge in Holdingford. He proudly served our country in the United States Army. After his service time he attended engineering school in Chicago, IL and returned to Holdingford where he has been a residence since. He worked as a draftsman and Engineer at Polar Tank and DCI until he retired. Melvin was a member of St. Hedwig’s, now known as All Saints Catholic Church. Melvin enjoyed designing and building projects, photography, 8-millimeter films, gardening and bow hunting.

Melvin is survived by his children, Jacalyn (Steve) Christenson of Sauk Rapids, Shawn (Lori) Kollodge of Newnan, GA; grandchildren, Tyler White, Alyssa Kollodge, Ashley Kollodge; great grandson, Carter White; brother, Norbert “Norb” Kollodge of Holdingford and sister, Delphine “Del” Tousen of the Twin Cities.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers and 7 sisters.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private Mass of Christian Burial took place on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at the Church of St. Benedict in Avon for Norma Meyer, age 84, who died Friday, June 5, at Mother of Mercy Senior Living in Albany.

Norma was born April 9, 1936, in Tracy to Walter and Amy (Youngs) McCoy. She married Eugene A. Meyer on October 4, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy.

Norma enjoyed sewing, embroidering, baking, and bargain hunting. She fondly remembered growing up on the farm in Tracy and found great joy in family gatherings. Everyone who met Norma loved her.

Survivors include her children, Julie (Scott) Dinger of Holland; Marlene (Shawn) Gordhamer of Apple Valley; Linda Meyer of Portland, OR; Susan (Dan) Pogatschnik of Avon; Margaret (Jim) Dahl of Delano; Donald (Alison) Meyer of Denver, CO; brother, Edward McCoy of Tracy; sister, Vivian Freeman of Loretto; 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, sons Loren and Dennis, and her parents.

Gladys M. Thompson, 89 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2020, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 12, 2020, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial will take place in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Gladys was born April 25, 1931 in Eagle Valley Township on their farm between Eagle Bend and Clarissa, MN. She graduated from Clarissa High School in 1948 and was extremely proud to earn her 4-year degree from St. Cloud State College in her early 40s. She taught elementary school in Swanville for over 35 years. Many of her students were children of former students. She was united in marriage on July 19, 1952 to Herbert Thompson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend, MN. They had three sons, John, Mark and Paul. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She and Herb enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and multiple trips to Europe. She was a devout Christian and led by example. She served as the church organist at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for over 34 years.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Herbert, of 68 years; children, Mark (Tammie) Thompson of Prairie du Sac, WI, Paul (Kimberly) Thompson of St. Cloud; sister, Verna Carlson of Inver Grove Heights; and grandchildren Joy and Crystal, Jeynae and Mitchell, Kalley and Mason; 5 greatgrandchildren, Kaiden and Vivienne, Charlie and Paige, and Grace.

Gladys was preceded in death by her son, John Thompson and her sister, Elnora Busacker.

Linus “Loppy” J. Bonfig

Linus J. “Loppy” Bonfig, age 93, lifelong resident of Freeport, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2020 in his apartment at Park View Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Linus John Bonfig was born March 11, 1927 in Freeport, Minnesota to Edward and Barbara (Kleve) Bonfig. Before retiring, Loppy farmed the Bonfig family homestead outside of Freeport. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, loved playing cards, and traveling to the nearby casinos. But his two favorite pastimes were fishing and baseball. Loppy’s wonderful sense of humor, storytelling abilities, love of people and his lifelong flirtation with all the ladies will surely be missed.

He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. To his family he was our “Uncle Loppy”.

Loppy was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Edward Bonfig; five siblings, Eleanor “Toodie” Wimmer, Lucille “Sis” Eiynck/Hinnenkamp, Doloris “Mooky” Gerdes, Victor “Vic” Bonfig, and Marie Elisabeth (who died at birth); brother-in-laws, sister-in-law, and other relatives.

Brief special session expected and more legislative notes The Legislature is expected start a brief special session this Friday, June 12. Only the governor can call us back, and he needs to do so if he is going to extend his peacetime emergency related to the Covid-19 situation. Even if the Republican-controlled Senate votes to end the emergency, the DFL-controlled House would also need to do the same. Resolutions to that effect were brought up three times during the regular session, and each was voted down in the House.

It’s also expected a bonding bill will be taken up during the special session, in addition to legislation pertaining to taxes.

The announcement over the weekend that a veto-proof majority of the Minneapolis City Council is in favor of abolishing their police department was surprising. As the city rebuilds and businesses emerge from the ashes of recent fires, there will still be the need for

some kind of law enforcement. We shouldn’t let the actions of a few deter from the good work done by others in the department.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Late last week, the ninth circuit court in California removed the registration on three brand names of the agricultural chemical known as dicamba. This chemical is one of the more widely used for weed control in soybeans and cotton, and the label removal comes just as farmers nationwide are beginning to spray their crops.

They are left wondering if they can continue to spray, what they can spray, and if sufficient supplies of other chemicals are available.

The ruling caught nearly everyone off guard. The Environmental Protection Agency is the federal arm that registers farm chemicals, and they gave their most recent approval to dicamba in 2018. There have been issues with spray drift that allegedly has caused damage to other crops, and the original lawsuit against dicamba was filed in 2017. At this time, it’s not known if the EPA will appeal the court ruling and request a stay while the case goes to the U.S. Supreme Court.

It’s interesting to note the different reactions from state departments of agriculture.

In research I’ve done, it appears that at least nine states will continue allowing the use of dicamba, while three others have stopped the sale and use of the product. Yes, Minnesota is one of the three that has disallowed the use of dicamba, along with Nebraska and Illinois.

The agriculture commissioner in North Dakota says that his state’s label has not been affected, and the use of dicamba will remain legal. Eight other states have said it will be okay to use the chemical until the EPA issues further instructions. Those state include Iowa, Indiana, Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, Kansas, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

It puts farmers in a very difficult spot, needing to spray their soybean fields and not being able to use their chemical of choice.

Timing in the control of weeks is critical, and now is the time to be spraying. They can’t wait for days or weeks to find out what the legal system will do. Here in Minnesota, where dicamba cannot be used because of the court ruling in California, farmers will be forced to look for alternative chemicals that will be effective in their fields.

Dear Motor Medics, My 2008 Ford Explorer has a humming noise coming from the rear of the vehicle but also a little from the front. I took it to the shop to find the cause and they said it is the rear wheel bearings that have failed. The cost for the replacement was almost $1K. I had wheel bearings replaced on the front of my other Explorer which is a year older just a year ago and it was less than half the price. Cost aside, I still have the noise from both front and rear, but it is much less noticeable. Could the bearings have been installed wrong?

-Casey in Reno, Nevada There could be more than one thing going on here. Let’s start with the cost. Rear wheel bearings often are a pressed-in type in the rear and require much more labor to replace so that can double the cost. As for the noise still being there after the repair but much less pronounced, you likely have two issues. It could be that one of the bearings in the rear is defective, but it could also be that one of the fronts are also out or possibly a tire issue. Cupped tires will mimic the sound of failed wheel bearings. Look for tire cupping and consult with your local shop and see what their opinion is. When dealing with noise it is important to look at all the factors that could cause them.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2013 Chevrolet Impala that has a throttle body problem. I have had to replace two of them in 100k miles. There was no warranty on either one and they are expensive. The dealership that replaced them said that the ethanol in the fuel causes soot deposits on them and that is what is destroying the throttle bodies. Since I live in Minnesota all the fuel, I can find contains ethanol. What can I do so it will not wreck my parts?

its always there. We have replaced many of these throttle bodies in our own shop, they can be problematic. The problem is with the design of the part, not the fuel. Just look at how many other millions of vehicles on the road that do not have a problem with the throttle body. Look at ethanol too. When you go into a buffet and see those ethanol candles burning under the food trays, do they give off smoke, they do not, gasoline would. Ethanol is a clean burning fuel. In over 30 years of using it in our own shop we have never seen damage caused by it when used properly. Ask your mechanic why ethanol caused the damage, they probably won’t be able to answer, and Chevrolets own answer is that it is not the cause.

Donald Kamphenkel

Graveside Service was held Monday, June 8, 2020 at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie for Donald Kamphenkel, 94, who passed away June 5, 2020.

Don was born December 6, 1925, on the family farm south of Long Prairie, to Frederick and Anna (Martens) Kamphenkel. He was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical and Reformed Church in Round Prairie Township. Don attended kindergarten through eighth grade at Country School District 124. After graduating from Long Prairie High School in 1943, Don farmed with his parents until he entered the United States Army in 1950.

While he was in the service, he married Patricia J. Ricketts on May 12, 1951, at the Methodist church in Long Prairie. Don was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1952. He worked at Hart Press/Banta Corporation for 36 years until his retirement. Don was very active in the American Legion Post 12, serving as gambling manager 15 years and enjoying being an active member long after stepping down. He served on the Evergreen Cemetery Board of Directors for 45 years, 27 of which as president. He also served many years on the church board of the Zion United Church of Christ in Long Prairie.

Don was an avid bowler and fisherman.

He enjoyed playing dominoes and card games, wood-working, horseshoes, and visiting with family and friends.

Don is survived by his loving wife of

69 years, Patricia; children: James (Robin) Kamphenkel of Sauk Centre, Donna (John) Alvarez of Mandan, ND; grandchildren: Wade (Jacque) Alvarez, Casie (Chris) Aufenthie, Jaime Kamphenkel, Briana Kamphenkel, Brady Kamphenkel; great grandchildren: Thomas Alvarez, Faith Alvarez, Piper Aufenthie, Elayna Kamphenkel, Taryn Kamphenkel; a grandchild by marriage: Taylor (Gretchen) Lambrecht and their daughter, Finola; niece Karen (Marty) Jenkins and nephew Allen (Cheryl) Rosenow.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Ralph, twin sister Dorothy Rosenow, and nephew Bruce Rosenow.
