Great hiring starts with these positive traits -By Harvey Mackay With the job market gradually coming back after a difficult pandemic, smart hiring is at the forefront. As a manager, you can’t do everything yourself, and you shouldn’t try.

Managers must be able to depend on their teams.

M o s t companies don’t have the luxury of unlimited hiring, nor do they have the time or budget to keep hiring and training employees until they find the right fit. Effective interviewing can prevent dealing with a bad hire and the work disruptions that can result. Because managers are often thrust into quick hiring decisions, they need to develop a sixth sense for red flags and warning signs.

Looking beyond the resume is just the start. Qualified candidates might fit right in, or there might be personality concerns that would override their credentials. Pay attention to those indicators. Remember, you and the rest of your staff will be spending a lot of waking hours with the new person.

Don’t put either group in a no-win situation.

Finding the right job candidates requires more than just likeability. Great hiring starts with looking for these traits: • Honest. Honesty, ethics, integrity, values and morals - all mean the same thing. They all convey the single attribute that determines whether a person or an organization can be trusted.

• Reliability. You want people who will always show up and always do their best.

Taking a chance on a superstar who may or may not be productive all the time is a big risk to take.

• Communication skills. Look for team members who aren’t afraid to speak up and who know how to express themselves clearly.

• Attentive listening. Communication

goes both ways. Every team needs members who are willing to wait their turn and listen to other points of view.

• Cooperation. Emphasize that you need your employees to pitch in and support their teammates whenever necessary, not just do their own jobs and ignore the challenges around them.

• Loyalty. You need team members who believe in your organization’s vision and the team’s goals. Choose people whose values and career aspirations are aligned with what you want your team to accomplish.

• Ambitious. It’s not enough for job candidates to say they have ambition; they have to show it. Look for candidates who are willing to accept challenges.

• Sense of humor. When your team is under pressure, the ability to put the situation into perspective with humor can be invaluable. And don’t just look for this trait in the people you hire, cultivate it yourself.

• Confidence. One of the traits that I look for is candidates having confidence in their ability and not being afraid to use it.

Confidence doesn’t come naturally to most people.

• Humility. Humble people aren’t afraid to share the credit for projects. They can poke a little fun at themselves while taking their work seriously.

• Committed/Passionate. Passion is essential on the list of skills necessary to excel. There is no substitute for passion.

Surround yourself with people who are passionate about their jobs. But remember, if they are not very good at what they are passionate about, passion won’t matter.

• Positive. Positive thinking has no negatives. Being positive changes the way we behave.

• Self-motivated. I want people who are self-starters.

• Enthusiastic. I’m always looking for people who are enthusiastic. There is one thing more contagious than enthusiasm, and that is the lack of enthusiasm.

• Hardworking. There are many formulas for success but none of them work unless you

do. A candidate’s work ethic should come through loud and clear in an interview. If you don’t sense it, move on.

• Creative. An employee who isn’t in a job that is identified as “creative” may have plenty to offer to the discussion. Ask questions that would include all members of the team for different perspectives.

• Flexibility. If a candidate is more interested in the job description than the job possibilities, you might need to dig deeper into their willingness to take on “other duties as necessary.”

• Accountability. Let employees know what you expect and hold them accountable for results. And hold yourself to the same standards.

Admittedly, the hiring process can be difficult. Sometimes you have more than one good candidate, which makes your decision more complicated. Or you have none at all, leaving you frustrated. Take the time to keep looking until you can fill the position with the right person. It will make a positive difference for your organization.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Homesteading

During the middle 18th century, Europe was having a recessionary economic period.

This was caused by several factors including unstable governments, inflation, changing from the feudal system of land ownership and some older inherited ideas about how land should be passed to children. Those in America, who were tired of boring factory work had dreams of starting a new life in the West, where the land was free and the air was clean.

The US Government needed the western part of the country to be populated, so that goods made back east would be needed out west and the agricultural production from the west could be sold in the world markets for additional revenue. To make this happen, the Homestead Act of 1862 was created.

The thought was that if people could get free land, they would move west to get it.

500,000,000 acres were the offering from the federal government. When the Homestead Act terminated in 1935, less than 20% of the 500,000,000 acres were claimed by citizens actually living on the land. A large portion of the land came under ownership by land speculators and the railroads. To entice the railroads to build tracks, the government gave them land adjacent to the tracks they were creating.

The requirements for free land were that a habitable structure must be built, a well must be dug, crops must be planted, trees needed to be cleared out and fences

were to be built. Most of the homesteaders didn’t have the physical or economic abilities to accomplish the requirements within the allowed time.

If you were from Europe and were not the oldest son, you were usually not able to inherit the farm. Your future prospects were not good. But the representatives from the US Government said that if you moved to America, you were able to get free land, just by farming it.

Imagine the dismay of a young European family, looking over their homestead land, which may have had a trapper or squatters shack on it. The land was covered by either stumps left by the loggers or was covered with massive trees. They were confused, since the farm land in Europe had probably been farmed for hundreds of years and there were no trees on it. They probably enthusiastically tried to turn the mess into farmland, but after the hardship and loneliness of homesteading, they left after a couple of years.

During the droughts of the 1930’s, the remaining number of those hearty families either lost their property to the banks or simply moved somewhere that had a better looking future.

As one travels on some of the back roads here in Minnesota, we will see old, uninhabited houses along with a shed, that was once someone’s dream of the future.

These remaining buildings and a couple of acres of farmland can tell stories of hard times.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I am wondering how many of you are anxious? In our world of uncertainty, Covid 19, unemployment, family disappointments, failures, and even success; we have so much bottled-up stress. Many cannot sleep at night; your mind is going 100 mph and you cannot shut it off.

Many people also take meds to wake up and meds to sleep, and never really sense any peace.

Jesus warned us that we will have trouble in our world. John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” I have heard comedians say, “My mom told me that you will have trouble, I just didn’t think she meant so much trouble.” This is so true.

There is hope however, first of all, this last text says that Jesus has overcome the world!

So, what do you put your hope in? Who might be a more appropriate question? Your own abilities, or the God of Peace? Philippians 4:6-8 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanks-

giving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is true, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praise-worth, think about such things.”

Obituaries

Arnold “Arnie” Marstein

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Arnold “Arnie” Marstein, age 51 of Bowlus, was held Saturday, June 5th at St. Robert of Bellarmine in St. Cloud. Burial was at St. Edward’s Cemetery in Elmdale.

Arnie passed away unexpectedly on May 31, 2021.

Arnold was born on October 14, 1969, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN, to Donald and Phyllis (Kelash) Marstein. He grew up in Coon Rapids, MN and graduated from Coon Rapids Senior High School in 1988.

Arnie worked in construction and welding after high school to put himself through college. He attended St. Cloud State University and The Minneapolis Business College, where he received his degree in accounting. After graduating, Arnie began his career with Polar Tank Trailer in Opole, MN. He then married Shannon Roering in 1994, and they had two daughters together. Arnie also helped to raise his stepdaughter. The couple later divorced.

Arnie enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending his time with friends and family.

He loved his time spent with his children and grandchildren, who he loved very much (especially time spent in the raspberry bushes).

Arnie was wonderful about sharing his time with his nieces and nephews, showing them how to hunt, fish, or even sharing his love of music, giving his own words of wisdom, as well as a few jokes along the way. Arnie was always willing to take the time to help someone who was working on a project.

Arnie played violin and would play for special services at church. Arnie had a passion for farming; he spent much of his time tending to his crops and animals, as well as helping his

dad on the family farm.

Survivors include his children Makenzie (Levi) Lathrop of Bowlus, Jean Marstein of Bowlus, stepdaughter Tana Marstein of Bowlus and grandchildren Hunter and Dakota Lathrop. He is also survived by his parents Donald and Phyllis of Bowlus, and his brothers and sisters; Donald (Patti) of Holdingford, Paul of St. Cloud, Vincent (Tammy) of Albany, Delrita (Dean) Thull of Albany, Thomas (Angie) of Clinton, Il, Raymond, and his friend (Sarah Rudnitski) of Sartell, and Bonita (Andy) Welinski of Upsala.

Pallbearers included brothers, Donald, Paul, Vincent, Thomas, Raymond, Dean and brother-in-law, Andy. Honorary Pallbearers were Jessica Rybaczuk, Brady Roering and Caleb Thull.

Addie Lucille Young, age 99 of Sauk Centre, formerly of Grey Eagle, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2020.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021 at the United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle at 11:00 am. There will be a graveside service after the church service followed by a dinner at the church.

Samantha is the daughter of John and Elizabeth Sobiech. She enjoys crafting and all sports. Sam participates in volleyball, basketball and softball. She has done all of these sports since entering sixth grade. She also tried her hand at speech as a seventh grader and was in the school play her seventh

and eighth grade years. Her favorite thing about school is that there is so many different activities, classes and people that you really learn who you are. Her advice to other students is “Get your work done right away so you can enjoy every other part of school.

Samantha, or “Sam” as she is affectionately called, has a wonderful personality and a great sense of humor! She has a way of making the classroom both fun and interesting. Sam is a natural leader. Jennifer was born December 26, 1972 in Park Rapids to Jerome Felt and Shirley Fritze. She grew up on a farm near Sebeka and graduated from Sebeka High School in 1991. After graduation she moved to Fergus Falls and attended Fergus Falls Community College. She managed a KFC restaurant until 1993. Jennifer moved to St. Cloud where she rented an apartment with her father. On May 3rd 1997 she met Scott Ellingson, marrying on that date in 2003. Four children were born to their union; twins Madeline and Brandon (deceased), Melanie, and Emily. Jennifer worked at several jobs in St. Cloud, Lantz Lenses, Vision Ease, Target, and Ben Franklin, until 1994 when she went to work for the St. Cloud VA Medical Center where she worked for over 21 years until her health would no longer allow it.

Jennifer’s family meant the world to her, putting them before anything else. She so much loved to go 4-wheeling, especially playing in the mud. She also loved to fish and was excellent at filleting them too. Another hobby she had was crocheting. She made some very beautiful blankets. Her favorite hobby, however, was cake decorating. There are no gutters on the maintenance building. The quote for gutters is approximately $1800.00. Council directed Tschida to move forward with the gutter installation.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the calendar. The Council scheduled a Planning Meeting for June 23, 2021 at 6:00 pm and a Budget Meeting for August 9, 2021 at 6:00 pm.

Planning Commission: Lange reported on the Planning Commission’s meeting.

Benson moved to hold a Public Hearing to consider up to 40 ducks being housed at 204 Basswood Ave. on July 6, 2021, at 7:30 pm during the regular City Council Meeting, 2nd by Mitch Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Lease Agreement with Stearns Bank: Discussion was had to decide if there was a more financially responsible place to house City Hall. Mitch Lange recommended that the City Hall and Office be moved from the Stearns Bank Building to the Rec Building where Toning Plus used to be; this would save the city approximately $12,000.00 a year.

Benson moved to sign a lease agreement with Stearns Bank for 1 year with the intention to do a month-by-month lease after that until the city can move into the Rec Building, 2nd by Mitch Lange.

Mitch Lange moved to direct staff to do a feasibility study on the Rec Building to create a City Hall and Office space in the Toning Plus area, 2nd

Since I’m retired and completely debt-free—including my home—and have over $1 million in the bank, is homeowner’s insurance still a good idea? The house is insured for $250,000, with a $5,000 deductible, and the insurance is about $1,200 a year.

-Mary Dear Mary, You’re obviously in good financial shape, but I’d still recommend you have an up-to-date homeowner’s insurance policy. If something happened to my home or one of my rental properties, I could write a check and replace any of them. But I still have homeowner’s insurance on every single one.

It’s just good risk management to transfer the chances of a fire, tornado, or other catastrophic events to homeowner’s insurance.

If something disastrous happened, you could write a check to cover the deductible with no problem. But writing a check for $250,000? You’d feel that one.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been listening to your show “Under The Hood” on my local radio station and have heard a lot of talk about gasoline and changes that have happened to it over the years and some new ones coming that we have seen here locally involving octane changes. The fuel in our pumps has changed and we now have a lower octane rating that before. I have always just used the cheapest fuel when gassing up my car, but after listening to you I wonder if I would be better served using something else. I heard you suggest the higher octane to a listener to prevent engine damage. Should I be worried about my car? I drive a 2006 Ford Taurus that’s not a flex fuel vehicle.

-David in Muskegon, Michigan Dear David, Thanks for listening to Under The Hood and for reading the column. Fuel has changed and we are seeing a drop across the board in octane and prices all over the place.

The first place to start is with your owner’s manual because you want to know what the manufacturer of your car calls for. If they recommend a minimum 87 octane or 89 octane, then that is the lowest you should use to protect the vehicle. Using fuel with lower ratings than manufacturer recommended can cause spark knock which is potentially harmful to the engine and too high is a waste of money so always consult the car owner’s manual.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I own a 2011 Chevy truck and car. They both have an oil change reminder light that tells me when the vehicle needs to be serviced. I have noticed that the time of service for these two vehicles can range up or down as many as 3000 miles on a change and frankly it worries me. and that I don’t need to change it earlier but that has been 9000 miles on the truck and 6000 on the car and that just goes against all I have ever been taught on my vehicles.

-Charlie in Bowling Green, Kentucky Dear Charlie, When we saw oil change intervals this high we got nervous too. The system takes into account things like engine temp, idle time, mileage and much more to determine change intervals so it’s a “Smart System” but not foolproof. It can’t tell what oil you use. Don’t skimp on the oil type. You need to use what is recommended by the manufacturer because that is what they base changes on. The factory recommended engine oil is made to last much longer than standard conventional oils and is formulated for long life. It doesn’t have to be theirs but has to meet their specs. Using a cheap oil will reduce miles between changes and can affect your engine warranty.
