Your business is known by the customers you keep By Harvey Mackay Few issues baffle me more than the lack of service that businesses think their customers will tolerate.

I just don’t understand how some companies keep their doors open. On the other hand, I’m sure that some of those businesses can’t figure out why they lose customers.

I receive lots of mail from folks who have had unpleasant or even nasty experiences trying to get problems solved. I hear horror stories from readers

who waited patiently for help only to be told they should come back another time when it wasn’t so busy . . . phone calls getting dropped while being routed to another person . . . and on and on.

I just don’t get it. If you don’t love your customers, why are you in business in the first place?

Let me share a couple war stories.

To be kind, I won’t identify the specific businesses.

One reader shared this story: “We ate at a certain restaurant a lot, mostly for dinners. Then one day we went there for lunch. My wife has severe arthritic hands and is unable to pick up a glass, so we always ask for a wine glass everywhere we eat and have no trouble.

But this day they refused to give us one and offered us a plastic cup. Her trouble is she cannot grasp, and the wine glass works great by just slipping her fingers around the stem. We had to leave and will not return again. They were not even very polite about it.”

Seriously? They have wine glasses hanging at the bar, but refused to put water in one? Wow, what a ridiculous way to treat a customer. And I suspect it will be more than that customer, because they will likely share their experience with their friends.

Here’s another doozy: “I went to a

car dealer for maintenance on my 2014 SUV. I had an appointment and sat in the service bay for 10 minutes. Then an employee told me to wait in the waiting room for my appointment tech.

I waited 20 minutes longer, but no tech.

I found him sitting at a computer and asked for my keys. He said nothing but ‘have a nice day’ which means nobody cared! Went to another dealer, got an immediate hello and great service! P.S. I spent $155 and am looking to trade for smaller car. I left a message to call me back at the first dealer, but no one called back ... nobody cares.”

Handled properly, that first dealership could have had a customer for life. He wanted to buy another car, and probably another and another down the road. Instead, they “drove away” a customer and anyone who hears about his experience.

The Celina Group describes unhappy customers in this warning: “I’m a nice person. When I get lousy service, I never complain. I wouldn’t dream of making a scene. I’m one of those nice customers. And I’ll tell you what else I am. I’m the customer who doesn’t come back. I would tell you off and feel better, but in the long run, it’s better just to leave quietly. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Milkweed

World War II had a great effect on how we lived.

Many young people volunteered for the armed services, while others were involved in the production of needed materials for the war effort.

This included not only the military equipment, but the clothing and food needed to support the troops. Every family needed to adjust their life to include the limitation on many normal food and automobile products. The result was that, as probably never before, everyone in our country found themselves contributing to the war effort in some way. It created a feeling of national unity, very different from our country today.

One seldom remembered special effort, was an effort by many grade school students to collect milkweed seed pods. Milkweed pods are collected today to improve the environment of the Monarch Butterfly, but the purpose for seed collection in years past was very different.

When the Japanese gained control of the area today called Indonesia, they cut off America’s supply of fluff from the kapok tree. The fluff was previously used as life jacket stuffing.

America needed to find a substitute and the substitute came from the milkweed plant.

Students named to the spring semester 2017 Deans List were recently announced by the Office of the Registrar at the University of Minnesota Crookston.

The U of M Crookston is one of the most respected career-oriented, technology-based universities in the nation.

To qualify for a place on the Deans List, students must complete 12 or more letter-graded (A-F) credits while attaining a 3.66 grade point average. The Crook-

material, which acts as a parachute to spread the seeds by the wind. When the pod dries it breaks open and releases it’s contents to spread to new areas.

It was found that the milkweed seed parachutes were a good life jacket stuffer. Since it would take several years to commercially produce milkweeds and the government needed to fill life jackets immediately, it was decided that the solution was to encourage the population to pick wild milkweed pods.

These milkweed pods were collected in onion sacks. These filled bags were sold to the government for $.15 per bag, with an additional $.05 paid if the pods were dried. The drying was accomplished by hanging the filled sacks in a sheltered area with adequate air movement. School children were encouraged to begin collecting, since it gave them a feeling of being able to support the war effort along with creating their own personal income.

The US Military needed more than 2 million pounds of Milkweed floss annually, which was enough fill for about a million life jackets.

An example of the success of the program, is that one county in Iowa delivered 1900 sacks of pods. The program worked! So now when you see a milkweed plant, think about how many Navy and Air-force lives were saved by that plant’s ancestors during World War II. Later, Stanley argued with his father that the woman had obviously worn and abused the dress and that the manufacturer would not help pay for it.

His father replied that the woman wasn’t doing business with the manufacturer.

She was doing business with Neiman Marcus, and that he didn’t want to lose a customer over a $175 dress.

Many years later, someone calculated that the woman had spent more than $500,000 at Neiman Marcus.

Great customer service pays off!

Let’s look at the flip side. Here’s a classic example of valuing your customers.

Few names in retailing are more famous than that of Stanley Marcus, the man who built Neiman Marcus into one of the world’s most famous department stores. He told me how his father, who founded the business, gave him an unforgettable lesson in valuing a customer properly.

Obituaries MaryAnn M. Vener

MaryAnn M. Vener, age 60, of Grey Eagle, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota after a 20-month battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Grey Eagle. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Celebration of Life

A Celebration of Life gathering in memory of Kay Wolbeck will be held on Saturday, June 3 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at the Pillsbury property: 33054 County Road 12, Swanville.

MaryAnn Margaret Pohlmann was born December 21, 1956 in Melrose, Minnesota to Lawrence and Irene (Koopmeiners) Pohlmann.

She graduated from Melrose High School in 1975 and continued her education at St. Cloud Beauty School, graduating in 1979. On September 29, 1979, she married Mark Vener at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

She owned and operated MaryAnn’s Beauty Shop for 10 years before working at Stearns Manufacturing in Grey Eagle for 17 years.

Stearns Manufacturing was sold and became KB’s Specialties where she continued to work for the next three years before retiring.

MaryAnn enjoyed watching the MN Twins and Vikings, going to casinos, playing pull-tabs, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzels, going for walks, attending family gatherings, and most of all, going on winter vacations to Mexico with Mark.

Survivors include her husband, Mark Vener of Grey Eagle; mother, Irene Pohlmann of Melrose; sisters and brothers, Kathy (Dave) Welle of Freeport, Fred Pohlmann of Willmar, Dan (Ruth) Pohlmann Sauk Centre, Patty Ahrens of Long Prairie, Rita (Jim) Geehan of Ham Lake, Eileen (Butch) Schneider of Cold Spring, Henry (Mary) Pohlmann of Melrose, Teresa (Bill) LeClaire of St. Cloud, and Carla (special friend, Dave Anderson) Hinnenkamp of St. Cloud; brother-in-law, Jerry Vener of Brooklyn Center; and many other relatives and friends.

MaryAnn was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Pohlmann; father and motherin-law, Bill and Elvina Vener; brothers, Bernard and David Pohlmann; sisters-in-law, Karen Pohlmann, Chris Vener, and Patty Niehaus; brother-in-law, David Vener; and niece, Tara Pohlmann.

Serving as casket bearers will be Kevin Welle, Mitchell Hinnenkamp, Keaton LeClaire, Aaron Pohlmann, James Geehan, and Andy Vener. Cross bearer will be Sara Clarys and scripture bearer will be Jonathan Carver.

Readers will be Andy Welle and Kelsey LeClaire. Petitions will be read by MaryAnn’s nieces. Gift bearers will be Dan Pohlmann and Henry Pohlmann. Eucharistic Ministers will be Kathy Welle, Eileen Schneider, and Teresa LeClaire. Placing of the funeral pall will be MaryAnn’s sisters.

Memorial Services were held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids for Linda Eggert, age 69, who passed away at her home on May 20, 2017.

Rev. Jerry Dalseth officiated. Burial will take place at a later date.

Linda was born to Charles and Lois (Boyles) Peterson on July 1, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska. Linda then grew up in Fergus Falls where she graduated high school and attended Fergus Falls Community College.

She married her best friend, Arnie Eggert on October 17, 1992 in St. Cloud and worked as a Dietary Aide at County Manor for over 17 years before retiring in 2011. She loved spending time with her grandkids, watching the Vikings, and playing computer games.

Linda especially loved to connect with her friends and family on Facebook. Linda is described as being her family’s biggest cheerleader and giving unconditional love to everyone who knew her.

Linda is survived by her husband, Arnie of Rice; children, Felicia (Steve) Nigro of Lee’s Summit, MO, Clint (Carrie) Athmann of Cold Spring; siblings, Dave (Cathy) Peterson of Minnetonka, Pam (Dave) Aasness of Moorhead; and grandchildren, Gabriella, Caroline, and Alayna Nigro, Tristen and Vivian Athmann.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Marcus A. “Mark” Kunstleben Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna for Marcus A. “Mark” Kunstleben, age 74, of Avon, who passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Reverend Gregory Mastey will officiate. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery with full military honors.

Family and friends may call after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

Mark was born on August 8, 1942 in St. Martin Township, to Frank and Alma (VanHoorik) Kunstleben. He served honorably in the United States Army. Mark married Geraldine Pyka on June 28, 1969

at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Opole.

He was employed at Electrolux for over 40 years and also farmed all of his life. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Albany American Legion #Post 482.

Mark enjoyed a drive through the country and helping others. He especially loved all the time spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; children, Lisa (Shawn) Hoppe of Long Prairie, Jacqueline (Tom) Biniek, of Avon, Jeff, Jason, Gail, Chad, Kunstleben, all of Avon, Ashley (Josh Krueger) Kunstleben; grandchildren, Andrew, Ericka and Kinley; siblings, Richard Kunstleben, Lorraine Heinen, Mary Jane (Nick) Zeimetz all of Albany, Bernice (Gerald) Hartung of Freeport, Robert Kunstleben of Holdingford and John (Lois Theilen) Kunstleben of Grey Eagle; and sister-in-law, Bernice Kunstleben of Albany.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brothers, Elizabeth, Alvin, Alphonse, Ronald; and brother-inlaw, Arnold Heinen.

Laurie Jean Priebe

Memorial Services will be held Saturday June 24th at Long Prairie Assembly of God Church for Laurie J. Priebe, age 62, who passed away Thursday at Cedar Cove Assisted Living in Sauk Centre.

Service will begin at 11 a.m. with one hour visitation before the

service.

Laurie was born June 6, 1954 in Park Rapids to Jerald & Audrey (Milbradt) Nagle.

She moved to Babbitt, MN in 1955 with her family. Laurie’s mother passed away in 1964.

They moved back to Park Rapids until the loss of her father at age 12 in 1967. After the loss of her beloved parents Laurie went to live with her Godparents, aunt and uncle, Wilfred and Lorraine Kreklau of Sebeka, MN. She graduated from Sebeka High School in 1972.

She went to Alexandria Tech School where she met Allen Priebe from Slayton, MN. Laurie married Allen November 23, 1973. They lived

in Slayton, MN until 1978 when they moved to Long Prairie, MN. Al worked for UBC Lumber and at Camp Ripley Army National Guard.

Laurie worked at Pizza Hut in Sauk Centre and as a stay at home mom. They divorced in 1986.

Later in her life Laurie worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Long Prairie Nursing Home for over 15 years. She moved to Cedar Cove Assisted Living, Sauk Centre, in 2012. Laurie was a member of Long Prairie Assembly of God Church where she was involved in Bible study groups and serving in many ways, especially the prayer chain.

Laurie enjoyed cooking, baking, card games, board games, scrapbooking, and loved canning with her family. She appreciated everyone and gave generously even when she didn’t have a lot. Laurie was a very caring woman who loved the Lord with all her heart.

Laurie is survived by her children, Bonnie (Josh) Johnson of Swanville and Charles (Jessica) Priebe of Marshall; sister, Sherry (Ralph) Johnson of Aurora, MN; grandchildren, Isaac, Jasmine, Emily and Rachel Johnson, Carter, Owen, Payton and Elijah Priebe niece, Becky (Jason) Elko; nephew, Steven (Nicole) Johnson; and great nieces and nephew.

Laurie was preceded in death by her parents.

Veronica “Froney” Frie

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 31 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary’s in Holdingford for Veronica “Froney” Frie who passed away May 27, 2017.

Veronica was born April 7, 1914 in Freeport to Henry and Mary (Ricker) Euteneur. She married Paul Frie June 5, 1945. Veronica was a homemaker and farmed with her husband. She was known as “The Egg Lady.” Froney was blessed to be able

Terry A. Pearson, 72-yearold resident of Olathe, Kansas formerly of Upsala, MN, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017, at a hospice facility in Kansas City, Missouri after a brief battle with cancer. He now joins his parents in their forever home.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN. A visitation will be held on hour prior to service at the church.

Terry was born on September 8, 1944, in Upsala, Minnesota to the late James and Ruth Pearson. He spent his professional career as a carpenter until a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) forced his early retirement.

Terry was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed both hunting and fishing throughout

to live on her own until a month ago. She was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers, the Holdingford Senior Citizens and the St. Mary’s Mission Group.

She is also survived by her brother and sisters, Melvin (Julie) Euteneur; Agnes Karpinski; Clara Pylka; and Eva Lamb.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul on February 12, 1978, her infant daughter, Delores; brothers, Edwin, Victor, Roman, Elmer, Urban and sisters; Marcella Dierck, Ceta Williams, Lorraine Euteneur, Mary Ann Posch, Erma Fautsch, and Leona.

His deteriorating health required his move to Olathe, Kansas in 2015, so his family could provide better hands-on care for him. Terry will be remembered most for his amazing sense of humor and his ability to tell stories. He was also known for his gentle soul and giving spirit by all who knew him.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents, James Pearson Sr. and Ruth Pearson. He is survived by his sons, Dean Pearson of Kernersville, NC; and David Pearson of Olathe, KS; grandchildren, Doug, Taylor, Nina, and Wade; brother, James Sr., and sister Wendy Voronyak; and several nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

By Andrea Asmus I am writing this as a response to Douglas Evans and his “conservative views.”

First off the founding fathers fled the U.K. for religious freedom. This country was not founded on Christianity. In fact Washington DC is nicknamed city of the gods. And the goddess on the capital building is the goddess Columbia. Not a Christian god.

Secondly fifty advanced nations have universal healthcare. Germany, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Norway. The list goes on and on. They pay higher taxes so nobody suffers and dies because they can’t afford to see the doctor. The United States pays more per capita on healthcare than those nations with universal healthcare. I have a cousin who died from complications of a bee sting because he was self employed, and had no health insurance, and couldn’t afford the doctor bill. He died from a simple bee sting! This does not happen in Canada because of lack of funds to pay for a doctor, or medicine.

Jesus Christ, who is, “the way, the truth, and the life,” said, few (a small percentage) will follow the “narrow…way” that leads to eternal life.

Most of us have failed Jesus’ command to take up the cross and follow him.

Through ages we let the unbelievers attack the Word of God and its truth, unopposed.

We let our “one nation under God” become a nation of many idol gods and atheists. A former president very proudly declared that (in different words) and the silence was deafening.

America’s educational institutions first started by recognizing the truth of the Word of God and taught the Holy Bible. They knew that by following God the nation would be blessed, and were prompt to give God the credit.

Historically, our founding fathers, and future leaders, proudly gave thanks to God in their letters and public statements. Unfortunately, our nation no longer teaches American history as they should. Now the

If our country is favoring the rich with tax breaks, and allowing them to stash money untaxed our whole country will fail to run smoothly. Our society as a whole is suffering. Why? Because a billionaire, doesn’t want a penny of that money to go back into our economy. Capitalism can’t work if the top earners don’t contribute like the rest of us do. General Electric got a tax refund after recording millions in profit. They took our tax money after they profited in the millions.

That my conservative friend is theft.

Dear Dave, I’ve operated my own small business for a couple of years.

In that time, I’ve been leasing the building that houses my company. How do you know when the time is right to buy a place and stop leasing?

-James Dear James, I’m a big fan of leasing the first few years after starting your own business.

It’s even better if you can work out of your home, but I understand that’s not always practical.

In my mind, you should only buy a building when you have a good idea what your building needs will be from a solid track record. Growth is a good thing, but in some cases you may want to hold off buying a building if you’re growing too rapidly. Don’t make the mistake of focusing too much on real estate and not enough on generating revenue and managing your growth intelligently. You would also want to make sure you’re going to be in anything you buy for a while, because you don’t want to be stuck with a residual value.

A residual value is the remaining value of an asset after it has been fully depreciated.

In the first three to five years of starting your business, you should lease.

After that, you can choose to lease with an option to buy or, in the right situation, buy a building — debt-free, of course.

My parents have been generous enough to pay for most of my school expenses, and they let me live at home while I complete my degree. Still, I’m trying to figure out how to move out and continue working, while continuing my studies full-time and attending career-related events. We live in an area where the cost of living is high, so I’m not sure how to handle all the facets of this situation.

Dear Joel, I think out of three things – school, work, and where you live – you need to decide which is your number one priority. If it were me, school would come first.

In order to go to school without borrowing money, you’re going to have to work. Getting out of school on time, and attending some of the events that will take you toward your career, will pre-empt work. You’ll have to work enough to pay for things, but if you can finish school and hit your academic and graduation goals while staying at home a little bit longer, that’s a pretty good deal. It’s a nice thing your parents are offering, but I can understand your desire to be out on your own.

I want you to be out on your own as soon as you can, too. But if you do that right now, you’re going to have extra bills and be forced to work even more.

That’s going to disturb your entire school process. Guess what your number one priority was in that scenario? Moving out! If it’s the tail that’s wagging the dog, it has become the number one priority. If it’s disrupting work, and thereby disrupting your academics, then you’ve put your priorities on the wrong thing.

In my mind, the number priority should be finishing school on time, and attending as many connected events as possible. Meanwhile, you’re working so much that you’re able to continue doing all this debt-free. If that means you’re staying at home a little bit longer to pull it off — do it!

Did You R.S.V.P yet? -By Sheila Ripplinger If you have ever taken part in planning a Wedding celebration, you know how important it is to get the responses back from the sent invitations. Typically, when invitations are sent, there is a reply card or phone number in which you would respond by a certain date with a yes or a no for attendance. It is important to know the number of guests that will attend because that is a huge part in deciding location and menu.

Imagine you were planning a large wedding and you sent out the invitations to many guests. You were waiting with eager anticipation for the R.S.V.P’s and on the final reply date very few actually responded. Maybe you would call them with the thought that perhaps they forgot and you would remind them. When all is said and done with reminder calls, you realize that your guest list has dwindled down to very few that are actually excited to attend your special Wedding Day. How discouraging and disappointing would that be? After you have gone to great length and detail to plan and prepare for this exciting celebration of love and commitment, you find that only a few would actually be present to share this moment with you. You would more than likely go from being joyful to heartbroken, knowing that the people that you loved the most and wanted by your side were overall not interested or were too busy with their own agenda. You do not pressure them though, because you realize that it was their decision and they will ultimately be missing out on the great festivities to their regret.

There is a Wedding Day that is coming that will be so absolutely incredible that it cannot be fully described in mere words on the invite. The invitations are still in the R.S.V.P. stage and the Bridegroom has graciously given more time to reply in hopes that many more will choose to come! Jesus spoke of this Wedding banquet in Matthew 22. To take part in this wonderful and amazing celebration the invitation must be personally accepted. He may give grace filled reminder calls, sometimes referred to as ‘wake

up calls’.

Historically, during that time, it was a common custom that a marriage contract be signed by the bride to be and the bridegroom which would then begin the betrothal time. The couple would live separately until the actual anticipated marriage ceremony. Meanwhile, during the separation period, ‘which there was no set time’, the bridegroom would be away preparing their home for he and his bride. The Bride would be adoringly getting herself ready for her Bridegroom. He would then return without notice to fully claim his bride and then the joyful marriage ceremony would be fulfilled and they would at last be united as one!

This is a beautiful picture of the ‘Church’ as the Bride and Christ as the Bridegroom. If you have accepted His invitation and are a true follower of Christ, then you have already signed the marriage contract and we are living in the ‘betrothal time.’ We are separated now as He is away preparing a home for us, John 14:2. When He has that home ready, He will return for His Bride, the ‘Church’ without notice to take us with Him to our Heavenly home! The Bible gives a pretty good description or glimpse of what that home will be like. The anticipation for that great Day for Christians is something well worth the wait! We even mercifully put up with the mockers who attempt to discourage us in our waiting. While we wait expectantly for our beloved Bridegroom to return, we must remain faithful to Him. We must not commit adultery with the temptations that are put in front of us or bow down to or give our devotion to material things/ idols. Only by the pure cleansing blood of the Bridegroom can we be made white and clean to prepare us for that glorious awaited Wedding Day! Have you accepted Christ’s invitation yet? There WILL be a final reply date. He is patiently waiting to hear back from you before the deadline. Did you reply when He gave you a reminder call?

Burnhamville Township April 25, 2017 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held April 25, 2017 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Luke Maidment, Elaine Maidment, Doris Wedl, Ron Schmidt, Mary Thompson and Erv Herdering.

The minutes from the regular meeting of March 27, 2017 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from U.S. Census, Midwest Asphalt, Minnesota Power notice of putting line under township road,

and ditch mowing bids.

Ron Schmidt presented a letter he distributed to the land owners on Forest Lane about the road improvements and the clerk read it aloud. The contractor hopes to start this week and the power lines should not have to be moved. There was discussion if it is a class B or minimum maintenance road. He questioned why board is not seeking DNR grant and he was told this projects does not meet the requirements for the grant.

Mary Thompson requested a handicap child sign on 315th Ave. Supervisors will try to get one installed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5408 through 5425: Rev. $1,329.01, R & B $17,073.62, Fire $11,228.04.

Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The board reviewed the road inspection list and will add another road and contractor will work on projects. Road restrictions are lifted and he can start dust control spray-

ing in May. Clean up day pricing will stay the same on a motion from Sup. Berscheit and a second from Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Clean up day will be May 20 from 9-11 am in Burtrum.

The board heard high lights from short course training, county township officer meeting, and Swanville Fire truck update.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve DK’s Tree and Landscaping bid for doing one side of Ermine Drive tree trimming this year and the other side next year for same amount. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $116,471.97. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:51 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

What Are They Saying? - By John Young A hot feature from Facebook in the past few months is their Marketplace section! The Facebook Marketplace is an area where one can buy and sell items like an ongoing garage sale. Items are quickly posted (and in some cases, just as quickly purchased) from the mobile app or the Facebook website. Listings will have one or more photos and a brief description. You can choose to comment on the listing to communicate with the seller or you can direct message them via Facebook Messenger (private message) to inquire about the items.

One concern is safety. We are meeting someone who might be selling something broken, stolen, or wore out. They might be there to rob us. There are so many unpleasant possibilities and even dangerous situations we have heard from horrible Craig’s List transactions that we have to be careful. The Marketplace is also only available to those over 18 years old.

The Marketplace listings are connected to seller’s Facebook profile. One benefit of this is that you can click to go see who is the person selling the items. I have checked out many profiles to see if I would be comfortable doing business (buying) something from that person.

It is possible for scammers to fake an account to post items, so one must be careful. Yet, Facebook has been VERY active in deleting fake profiles so you won’t find as many issues on the Marketplace as you would on Craig’s List.

Where can you find the Marketplace? On the mobile app on newer devices you will find the Marketplace icon at the bottom of the Facebook app’s main screen as the center/middle icon.
