Business has no speed limits -By Harvey Mackay “Pushing the envelope” is a phrase that originated with American test pilots such as Chuck Yaeger and John Glenn in the 1950s. Each aircraft they flew was said to have an “envelope” of performance. In other words, it was designed to fly safely up to a certain speed for a certain distance at a certain altitude. The job of test pilots was to “push the envelope” by making the plane go faster, farther and higher.

To me, “pushing the envelope” means pushing the boundaries and pushing yourself to maximize your advantage to be better, faster and smarter and to get the results you want – in business and in life.

It’s difficult to overstate the importance of speed in business. This century’s business is dominated by speed. Speed is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Having a great product isn’t enough anymore.

People expect things faster, cheaper and better. Every part of your business needs to be up to speed.

Take customer service, for example.

You need to speed up the time handling customer complaints. When you serve your customers in a timely fashion, you end up with satisfied customers. Poor customer service equals dissatisfied customers. My

motto has always been “Taking care of customers is taking care of business.” If you make customers #1, they will make you #1. Speed allows you to differentiate in the marketplace. Amazon’s emphasis on speed is a great example.

If businesses don’t think and act fast, they get passed like jalopies on the freeway.

Companies like Blockbuster, which stayed the same for years, was passed up by video streaming subscriptions like Disney, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Mainstay companies like Sears, Kodak, Xerox, Radio Shack, and Toys “R” Us, are all shells of what they used to be.

Businesses have to keep up or get passed up.

Kmart and Walmart both started in 1962, but compare the two companies today.

Walmart has continued to make changes and reinvent itself, which is reflected in its sales of more than $510 billion. Kmart, on the other hand, remained stagnant, and it’s struggled (after being acquired by Sears) in and out of bankruptcy.

IBM and Hewlett-Packard got passed up by Dell when it started selling computers directly to consumers, instead of through stores.

We live in a world of instant gratification, so consumers expect speed.

They can’t wait until the next great smartphone with expanded capabilities.

There will always be a group of people who demand the latest and the greatest, and there will be a forward-thinking company ready to serve them.

training them to complete tasks faster, innovate and share best practice ideas.

When you hire the right person you’re only halfway right. Train them correctly, consistently and constantly to move at a rapid pace with ease. One caveat: Never sacrifice quality for speed. Faster is only better if the result is a top-notch product, as illustrated in this story.

A man was driving down a country road one day at 45 miles per hour when suddenly he noticed a three-legged chicken running at the same speed beside his truck. Though he thought this odd, the man decided to speed up so he wouldn’t cause an accident with the chicken. The man sped up to 55 miles per hour, but so did the three-legged chicken. The man then sped up to 65, and so did the threelegged chicken.

As the man watched in amazement, the chicken suddenly made a sharp left turn and took off down a side road toward a small farm. The man turned and followed the chicken to the farm. Looking around, the man found a farmer around back amid a flock of three-legged chickens. After greeting the farmer, the man asked him why he was raising three-legged chickens.

“Well, we figure that with an average family of three people, only two can have a chicken leg with a normal chicken,” said the farmer. “But with a three-legged chicken, each member of the family can enjoy a chicken leg of their own.”

“That’s pretty wise,” said the man, who then asked, “So how do your threelegged chickens taste?”

“I don’t know,” said the farmer.

“We’ve never been able to catch one.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Memories (2) Something that has really changed in our lifetime is music.

At a time when not everyone had a radio, we remember many families that were quite skilled with musical instruments. The music came from violins, guitars and in some cases juice harps or piano’s. Evenings were a time for family gatherings. No TV or cell phones, so conversation, music or bible study were the natural evening happening.

The musical instruments were sometimes brought to this country by those “coming to America.” They were prize possessions because of their appearance and the ability of the person to demonstrate their skill in it’s use. They probably had spent years learning to play the instrument and enjoyed sharing the sounds it created.

The tunes created came from the old country, the church or new tunes shared at a neighborhood gathering. Most early family members were unable to read music, so they played by ear or mimicked another playing a similar instrument. It was common for individuals to develop skill with several instruments and unique, enjoyable vocal abilities. As the sounds improved, the practicing became more frequent, with some families being hired

The big change in music through the years is that the first music we remember told a story or sent a message. We remember songs from our past because we could relate to the beat and the message of the song. Some of the songs expressed happiness, others told of sadness.

Some told of love, others were prayers of thankfulness. But we enjoyed and remembered the words and the message.

Some of these tunes have stayed with us our whole lifetimes.

The instrument sounds in the background created the rhythm and the tune, but the primary thing we remembered is the tune and the words... the story being shared with us by the song. We all remember different songs, primarily since they seemed to relate to us because either they seem to fit our personality or matched our feelings when we heard it.

We sometimes find ourselves humming or if we are totally by ourselves, we may sing them aloud. After all, we don’t usually want to have anyone hear how badly we sing.

Today’s music seems to be a conglomeration of various instrumental sounds. The background sounds, especially the screeching of a steel guitar, are so loud that the voice of the performer can’t be heard. If the performer can be heard, their whining sounds are hard to understand.

I had to write this article, because recently I heard some old country and bluegrass music, which I found very pleasant. It was good to hear real life stories with a musical background.

Marcella ‘ S a l l y ’ Nierenhausen, age 88 of Avon, MN passed away peacefully on June 30th, 2020.

Sally is preceded in death by loving husband James Nierenhausen, parents George and Mary (Schaefer) Zierden, sister Florence Funk, son-in-law Dennis Trombley, and great grandson Mason Trombley and good friend, John Koppy.

Sally is survived by her children Bernadette Trombley, Joan (Gene) Soderbeck, Diane (Lloyd) Smith, Thomas (Jan) Nierenhausen, Mary (Tim) Lemke, Robert (Cindy) Nierenhausen; sisters Loretta Thomes, Sister Phyllis Zierden, Viola Beutz; brother, Clarence Zierden; 24 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Sally was born April 12, 1932. She grew up in New munich, MN where she met and married James Nierenhausen on September 23, 1952. Together they raised six children.

During their early married years, they lived in Denver, CO, Alexander, LA, and St. Paul, MN while James served in the military. In 1973 the couple moved to Avon, MN. Sally worked in St. Cloud as a payroll accountant.

Sally loved to dance. Country western music as well as old-tyme music were her favorite forms of entertainment. She enjoyed sewing and keeping a meticulously clean home.

Sally loved domestic travel and exploring many parts of the United States. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be missed by her family and friends.

Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday, July 7th at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Avon, MN.

Robert “Bob” A. Stoermann

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Robert “Bob” A. Stoermann, age 86 of Holdingford, was held Monday, July 6, at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Robert passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday, July 1.

Robert was born March 3, 1934 in Millwood Township to Gerhard and Katherine (Hoppe) Stoermann. He grew up in Millwood Township and married Sylvia Fink on August 23, 1956 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. The couple lived on the family farm in St. Rosa for a couple of years before moving to Holdingford. Robert was a heavy equipment operator for Martin Fruth Construction, retiring in 1998. He also worked for the Brenny Funeral Home and the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes. After he retired from construction, he worked for the Holdingford Schools, mowing grass and driving school bus. He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary.

Robert is survived by his children; Sharon Stanoch, Holdingford; Sandy Kierzek, St. Joseph; Tom Stoermann, Albany; Nancy Paggen, Holdingford; Steven (Terri) Stoermann, Holdingford; Julie (Steve) Notsch, St. Joseph; 14 grandchildren: Leann, Nick, Emily, Katelyn, Ben, Kayla, Drew, Grant, Brayden, Kyle, Audra, Greta, Taylor and Tanner; 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Rose Pundsack, Melrose and Irene Pundsack, St. Cloud.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sylvia in 2006, his sisters and brothers; Julitta Austing, Rogaria Austing, Bernard Stoermann, Boniface Stoermann, John Stoermann, Linus Stoermann, and one grandchild.

Harvey Rohe

H a r v e y Rohe, age 85 of St. Rosa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at his home near St. Rosa, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, July 9 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Eberhard Schefers officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

A public visitation for close family and friends will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Thursday at the church.

Harvey was born February 10, 1935 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to John and Mary (Bueckers) Rohe. He married Rose Mary Finken on May 6, 1961 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The couple lived and dairy farmed north of St. Rosa all their lives. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

Harvey was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa where he was a Eucharistic Minister and church trustee. He was also a member of the St. Rosa Lions Club and on the board of directors for Upsala Coop and Freeport State Bank.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary of St. Rosa; sons, Melvin of St. Cloud, Mike (Deb) of St. Rosa, Marvin (Michele) of St. Rosa, Dennis of St. Rosa, and James of St. Rosa; grandchildren, Dustin, Cody, Katie, Emma and Krystal; great-granddaughter, Lily; brothers and sisters, Arnold Rohe of Eden Prairie, Juanita Roerick of Freeport, MaryAnn Laing of Freeport, and Joseph (Carol) Rohe of Fridley; and many nieces and nephews.

Harvey was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Jane Rohe; and brothers-inlaw, Gilbert Roerick and Bernie Laing.

Richard William Decker Richard W. Decker 58 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN passed away June 30, 2020.

He was born on June 12, 1962 in Alexandria, MN to Willard and Agnes Decker.

Jerome W. Heinze

Jerome W. Heinze, age 87 of Elrosa, died peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 6 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Jerome William Heinze was born November 22, 1932 in Lake George Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Paul and Theresia (Vorderbruggen) Heinze. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1957. On July 21, 1956 he married Clara Rothstein at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. Jerome farmed northwest of Elrosa and retired in 1998.

He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa, Catholic Order of Foresters, Elrosa Senior Citizens, and the Elrosa Commercial Club. Jerome enjoyed playing cards and always had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Clara Heinze of Sauk Centre; children, Judy Heinze of North Mankato, Keith (Judy) Heinze of Sauk Centre, Wayne Heinze of Elrosa, Nancy (Mark) Klaphake of Belgrade, John (Jennifer) Heinze of Sedan, and Mark Heinze (special friend, Christine) of Chokio; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Rothstein of Cold Spring; and sister-in-law, Kathy Heinze of Sauk Centre.

Asmus, R o d n e y A. “Hot Rod” “Rockin’ Rod” Lanners, age 56 of Burtrum, died after a twomonth courageous battle with stage 4 esophagus and liver cancer on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

Rodney Abraham Lanners was born June 21, 1964 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Robert “Bob” and Ursula (Schoefer) Lanners. He graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1982 and continued his education at Willmar Vocational Technical College. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Wagner on July 7, 1984 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rosemount, Minnesota. Rodney was a proud member of the Union Pipefitter Local 539 and worked at Gustafson Mechanical in Alexandria. He was a hard worker and was known to be a handyman. Rodney and Marilyn owned and operated Eagle Mountain from 2006 through 2016.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Mound Lake Association, Car Clubs, and the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club. Rodney had a passion for classic cars and loved to restore and sell them. He enjoyed being outdoors.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, enjoyed four wheeling and mud runs, going to car shows and swap meets. Rodney loved spending time with his family and friends.

He was always eager to lend a helping hand and will be remembered for his sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Lanners of Burtrum; two daughters, Ashley Lanners of St. Cloud and Amy Lanners of Burtrum; grandchildren, Noah Kreidler of St. Cloud and Natalie Kreidler of St. Cloud; father, Bob Lanners of Burtrum; sister, Anita (Rick) Walker of Pillager; motherin-law, Rosemary Wagner of Ellsworth; sister-in-law, Ruth (Mike) Wenz of Gillette, Wyoming; brothers-in-law, Neal (Julie) Wagner of Rosemount and Eugene “Fuzz” Wagner of Burtrum; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert Asmus was born May 14, 1959, to Arden and Luella Asmus at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre, MN. He graduated from Grey Eagle High School and enlisted in the Air Force. He married Patsy Warren and later divorced. He did construction work all his life working for Kerzman Construction, Haider Construction, helping his dad and then starting up his own business, Bob’s Woodcraft.

Bob was involved with the community serving 28 years on the Grey Eagle Fire Department and Rescue Squad, serving 15 years on the Melrose Ambulance, and the Burtrum Heritage Club.

Bob enjoyed showing his projects in the shop, gardening, grilling, fishing, hunting, camping, he played on dart and pool leagues, and the love of his new tractor. He was always eager to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his sense of humor.

Bob is survived by his mother, Luella Asmus-Alt (Ervin Alt) of Grey Eagle; sons William “Bill” Asmus and family, and Adam (Nicole) Asmus and family; siblings David Asmus of Grey Eagle, Donna (Larry) Maciej of Swanville, Janice Theisen of Albany, Thomas Asmus of Louisiana, and Lori (John) Young of Grey Eagle; many nieces and nephews; special friend, Mary Lou Theisen, and her son Jason and family.

He is preceded in death by his father, Arden Asmus (July 21, 1986).

Burnhamville Township May 26, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held May 26, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center. Social distancing and sanitizing were implemented. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener. Also present were Chris Pelzer and Erv Herdering.

The minutes from the regular meeting of April 28, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

Chris Pelzer, Todd County Coordinator and GIS specialist, was present to discuss with the township changing the house number signs to horizontal instead of vertical. There are obstructive issues with the vertical signs. Since all the other counties do the horizontal numbers the metal signs are less expensive. The townships would be responsible for the costs of changing the signs. She suggested the signs could be replaced on an as needed basis, instead of all at once, so it would not cost the townships as much.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to change the 911 property numbers to horizontal. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Chris will be talking to all the townships and reporting back to the county board.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about a road groomer, election issues, an unsigned letter about town and township maintenance, and a form to certify the township mileage. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the mileage the same as last year. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The board appointed Shirley Hulinsky Head election judge and Pam Throener as alternate head judge. Brighter Days Family Church in Burtrum was named the emergency voting area.

To meeting the HAVA requirements and to keep up with technology Todd County would like to upgrade the voter assist machines. Each municipality will pay for their own, except where some precincts share machines, so Burnhamville will share the cost with Burtrum. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to purchase new machine. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 5917 through 5927: Rev. $2,123.30; R & B $26,714.54. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The chair again received an unsigned letter complaining of issues in the City of Burtrum and the condition of a township road. Burnhamville Township has no say on property issues in the city. The chair would like to speak to the author of the letter to discuss township issues. If they would like to talk to Mike they can call 320-7332359.

In the road report dust control list was reviewed and is almost done. Supervisors are still trying to get help with the cost of spraying Fitz Road. The Bass Lake Access needed work and frost boils are still coming up. There was a request to check out a culvert on a driveway on 150th St. and supervisor said to fix it.

Township clean-up day was very busy. The bill will be split with the City of Burtrum.

Ditch mowing contract bids were reviewed.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the low bid from Mike Berscheit. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed with Sup. Berscheit abstaining.

Sup. Johnson is concerned about the traffic control safety at Pillsbury beach area. He will check with the county engineer about a yield sign at 331st Ave and Flicker Road.

The clerk informed the board the printer stopped working and the board gave approval to purchase another one.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $73,519.45. Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Johnson seconded motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Shirley Hulinsky, Burnhamville Township Clerk Swanville City June 2, 2020 PUBLIC HEARING Mayor Lange called the Public Hearing to order at 6:30 pm. Council members present: Mayor Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Jim Molitor. Absent Tony Maciej. Also present: via conference call Aaron Meyer and Katie Breth, from MN Rural Water, Clif Allen, and reporter Sheila McCoy. The purpose of the hearing was to hear public input on the Well Head Protection Plan. Meyer gave an explanation on the emergency response of the well head plan and explained the free grant programs to close any old well on personal property in the City of Swanville.

Meyer answered questions from council. There were no complaints or comments for or against the plan. Mayor Lange then closed that public hearing and opened the seconded Public Hearing. The purpose of this hearing is to hear public input on Adopting Ordinance #20-0602 Section 3.2 G Zoning Districts, which states residents are required to build a principal structure before an accessory structure can be built. There were no complaints or comments from anyone on this hearing. Mayor Lange made a motion to close the Public Hearings. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All voted in favor.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:05p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Jim Molitor. Absent: Tony Maciej. Also present: via conference call: Aaron Meyer and Katie Breth, from MN Rural Water, City Engineer Clif Allen, and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes from the May 5, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, City Engineer, gave a report on the Intended Use Plan letter for the city water tower. After discussion, Deb Wood made a motion to sign and send the IUP letter to the State of Mn for consideration. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Well Head Protection Plan was again discussed. After discussed, Jim Molitor made a motion to adopt the Well Head Protection Plan for the City of Swanville. Deb Wood Seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Aaron Meyer, MN Rural Water, will be working with the Clerk to send the plan onto the MN Dept of Health.

Natasha Bednar applied for a land use permit to put up a movable chicken coop. It will house 2.5 chickens, with a bantam chicken counted as a half. Mayor Lange made a motion to give Bednar a permit to put up a movable chicken coop, housing 2 chickens and 1 bantam chicken. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. The $50.00 permit charge was received by the Clerk. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange reported that the variable frequency drive motors are installed at the sewer plant. This should be a big savings on the electric bill at the sewer plant.

Ordinance #20-0602 Section 3.2 G was again looked at. This ordinance states: all residential districts (Medium, Low and High) are required

It was reported that complaints have been made about the new townhouses on North Berkey Avenue. The owners will be contacted to see why grass has not been planted and piles of cement are on the dirt.

The addition to the north of North Berkey Avenue was discussed. At this time the cost of extending the lots and adding water and sewer to the north does not seem feasible and will be put on hold for now.

The opening of the city park building was

discussed. It was decided the building will open to one rental a weekend and be based on the state regulations as they change. There will be a waiver of liability form signed by each renter. There will also be deeper cleaning after each rental with sanitizing solution.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 7:00 pm.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Mayor Lange and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:00 pm.

Crash with Injuries: July 1, 2020: At 4:17 p.m. deputies responded to a crash with injuries involving a 15-year-old male riding a dirt bike in the area of County Road 17 and 155th Avenue in Holding Township.

Wyatt Miller, 15, of Albany, was riding his dirt bike eastbound on County Road 17 when his rear wheel locked up and he lost control of the bike. A witness, who was following him, saw the incident happen and called 911.

Mayo Ambulance transported Miller the Melrose Hospital for minor injuries.

Miller was wearing a helmet.

Holdingford Fire and Rescue assisted.

Accident with Injuries: July 3, 2020: At 12:35 p.m. deputies responded to the 40000 block of Apple Lane in Sauk Centre Township for accident with injuries.

David Anderson, 68, of Sauk Centre, was mowing his lawn with a Cub Cadet riding lawn mower. As he made a right turn to go around a culvert on the northeast corner of his property, the right front wheel came too close to the culvert and sank into the soft ground. The lawn mower leaned to the right and forced Mr. Anderson from the seat. The lawn mower shut off and continued to roll to the right which pinned his legs underneath.

An unidentified neighbor drove by and saw Mr. Anderson under the lawn mower.

The neighbor stopped to help Mr. Anderson get out from underneath the lawn mower.

Sauk Centre Ambulance transported Mr. Anderson to the Sauk Centre Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Sauk Centre Police and Sauk Centre Fire and Rescue assisted.

Drowning: July 4, 2020: 20-year-old male drowns at Middle Spunk Lake in Avon.

At approximately 3:42 p.m. deputies responded to Middle Spunk Lake in Avon for a report of a possible drowning.

The caller reported a male went missing in the swim area and they were unable to locate him in water. A Stearns County Sheriff’s Sergeant arrived first on scene and entered the water to try to locate the male.

Additional deputies, Avon Police and Avon Fire and Rescue arrived to assist.

The Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol units and diver were deployed. The diver entered the water near the last known place the male was seen. A short time later, the diver returned to the surface with the missing male.

ing efforts were initiated.

Life Link airlifted the male to the St. Cloud Hospital where he remained in critical condition.

Mayo Ambulance, North Air and Minnesota DNR also assisted on scene.

Audrey Arlene West

L o v i n g , devoted Wife and Mother was called home to be with Jesus on Sunday, July 5th, 2020, at the Pine Villa Nursing Home, Melrose, after a short battle with lymphoma.

Audrey was born September 5th, 1937 in Bertha, MN to Willmar and Irma (Krause) Ellig. She grew up on their farm in Bertha. On December 27th, 1958 she married Glen West at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bertha MN. Audrey is survived by her husband Glen, children; Richard (Sarah) West of Elk River, MN, Kimberly (Jerome) Fritz of Maple Grove, MN, Glenna (Mark) Kalahar of Bismarck, ND, and Sandra (Randy) Klaphake of Albany, MN and 8 grandchildren; also siblings, Willis (Joyce) Ellig, Betty Verdugt, Karen Larson, Norma (Arlen) Pearson and Norman (Jeanie) Ellig.

Audrey’s life was dedicated to the love and care of her husband and family. She played an active role in her children’s lives participating and being a leader in many activities at church, school and at home.

The family enjoyed many summer camping trips and spending time at the farm of her parents.

After retirement, her favorite pastime was spending quality time with her eight grandchildren and going on RV trips with her husband Glen. She especially enjoyed their winter sojourns to south Texas where they would enjoy the warm weather and the company of their many friends.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Todd Olson, sisters Gloria Ellig and Janice (Dorman) and brothers-in-law Dean, Duane, and Dallas West.

Due to COVID 19, a private family service will be held in Avon, MN with interment at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

-Riley Dear Riley, I get where you’re coming from. A lot of people believe it’s hard to get an apartment without a credit score, and that’s just not the case. In most cases, if you’ve got money for a deposit and proof of employment, you can find a little apartment somewhere.

Anytime you’re renting it should be because you’re in a stage of your life where you’re not going to be in the area long, you’re saving money to buy a home, or you’re working your way out from under a lot of debt. Think of it as “rent patience.”

Renting should be a temporary stop along the road, not a way of life. You’re parked and you’re on hold until you’re ready for a house or you get your finances in order.

I don’t hate apartments, and renting isn’t evil. But renting for a decade or two is not a smart move. How much do you want to pay for patience? The least amount

But, if you walk onto a car lot with cash, and haggle with the salesperson a little bit, they’ll knock a bunch off the sticker price.

If you can buy the car for less than the 0% interest gimmick, how is that 0%? See what I’m saying? The cash buyer pays less.

Besides, you shouldn’t even consider buying a brand new car unless you’re debtfree and have $1 million or more in the bank. You lose a ton in value the second you drive a new car off the lot. How is that 0%?

A new car also loses about 60% of its value in the first four years after you buy it. How is that 0%?

The whole 0% interest gimmick tricks a lot of unsuspecting folks into buying something they don’t need and can’t afford!

Dear Motor Medics, I have been pulling a new boat this year and its about 3000 pounds heavier than my last one. This one is 26 feet long and weighs about 10k pounds. I pull the boat with my 2011 Ford F150 Eco boost which they say is rated to pull over 11k pounds. It pulls hard, but I think that is just because it is close to its load limit. My transmission temp gauge reads about 225 after a half hour of driving and a little more on hills but the engine stays under 230. Is there anything I should do to lower the temps and make it pull easier or is it ok the way it is? I do not use overdrive and keep the RPM at about 2000 rpm just like it would read if I were at a higher speed in overdrive without the boat.

-Lewis in Canby, MN That’s some good info. for us to give you some helpful advice. Sell the truck and buy one properly equipped or get a smaller boat. No other way to get around this one. You may see some listings for your truck showing over 11k pound tow ratings, but that is only with the proper gears and tow package otherwise its much less. The readings you give are high and the rpm description does not indicate the lowest towing gears. Verify with the manufacturer for sure how your truck is equipped before towing again.

became hot a few times getting into the red and displaying a message that read stop engine now. Is there any chance of engine damage? It seems to run ok. What are you supposed to do when you are on the road with the family with no place to stop and you have a leak?

-Brad in Liberal, Kansas Some engines have a better time with overheating than others, but it is never a good thing. The hotter the engine the bigger the chance of damage to it. At this point monitor the engines running and see how it is acting. If it starts to use coolant or runs poorly it may have a problem. When you do have a coolant leak you should stop the engine as soon as possible and tow if needed. KSeal added to a cool engine can help get you to the repair shop but don’t forget to carry spare coolant. It won’t stop every kind of leak but can be helpful.

I was in the McDonald’s drivethrough this morning and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn, because I was taking too long to place my order.

“Take the high road,” I thought to myself. So when I got to the first window, I paid for her order along with my own.

The cashier must have told her what I’d done, because as we moved up she

July 3, 2020: At approximately 22:44 hours received a report of a boat that struck a pontoon on Big Birch Lake in Grey Eagle Township. Deputies arrived to find multiple people with injuries that needed transport to the hospital. Melrose Ambulance responded along with the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Grey Eagle Fire Department and the Minnesota DNR to assist in the incident. The incident is being investigated by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.
