Customers feat on great service -By Harvey Mackay How much would you pay for an egg? Fifty cents?

Two dollars?

How about $6,000?

That’s how much it cost one restaurant in Newport Beach which refused to honor a customer’s request.

Not through legal action, or any formal process. Rather, it represents the lost business that eatery suffered – because of one egg.

Let me explain. Authors Deb and Todd Duncan, whose careers also include television production and peak performance training, detail the ten new golden rules of customer service in their new book, “The $6,000 Egg.” Deb and Todd were frequent patrons at a chic test kitchen that experiments with new menu items. One day the featured special was a waffle served with an egg on top. The couple wanted a cheeseburger,

which was on the menu, but asked to have a fried egg added on top of the burger.

They were surprised to hear from the server that the kitchen might not be able to do that. Sure enough, even though they were making eggs for the waffles, the server told them the kitchen was too busy to make one for the burger. So they asked a different server who knew them well.

The answer was still no, because it wasn’t on the menu. When they asked to speak to the manager, she approached without a smile. After yet another request, she stood firm, explaining the restaurant only orders a certain number of eggs per day, and they couldn’t sacrifice one for their cheeseburger.

Todd was incredulous. He asked her, “So a one-time visitor who orders a waffle for fifteen dollars is more important to you than a $6,000 customer who comes in at least four to six times a month, but for whom you cannot figure out how to get an egg?”

Her response was a textbook lesson in terrible customer service. “If we run out of eggs, we can’t serve the waffle.” So when Todd suggested she might be able to send a busboy down the block to buy a few extra eggs, she offered to cover their check for their inconvenience.

He couldn’t believe she would rather pay their $75 tab than sell them a single egg. They left, and vowed never to return.

They wound up at a restaurant next door where they shared their experience.

There, the server told them that their company creed is “We don’t say no here.” And they don’t need the manager’s

permission to satisfy customer requests.

Guess where they go for breakfast now.

So many of the rules they include are simply common sense, yet they are broken over and over again.

Perhaps the most frequent complaint I hear from readers is that they are repeatedly disappointed in the service they receive, even from companies they have done business with for years. Those companies would be wise to remember that one bad experience can destroy customer loyalty.

And anyone in business knows it is much more expensive to find new customers than to retain existing ones.

Our motto at MackayMitchell Envelope Company is “To be in business forever.” That’s getting to be a tall order, since technology has replaced the need for envelopes in many instances. Fax machines, email, text messages, snapchat, online bill paying – you name it, another bite out of our industry. So we need to keep our customers happy, because their options seem to expand daily.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 the trendiest styles, but if you don’t deliver quality service, you have nothing. Even in this instant gratification world, customers relish personal service. They want to feel important. They want to know that someone cares about their needs.

Want to know what really says they don’t care? The phone call that’s answered by a voice telling you to hold, but “your call is very important to us.” And then you wait. And wait. And the message is repeated. And you start to wonder how important your call really is.

I understand the economic considerations, but I wonder how many businesses are actually losing business

when you can’t connect with a live person in a reasonable amount of time.

Remember, most customers aren’t asking for miracles. They might have special requests or needs that are not part of your usual offerings. But if you can accommodate them, do it. Don’t make your customers walk on eggshells.

Obituaries Lawrence A. Norton

Lawrence A. Norton, age 56 of Glencoe, formerly of Sauk Centre, died Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 7 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Lawrence Alfred Norton was born September 15, 1958 in Paynesville, Minnesota to Dale and Ruby (Gehlhar) Norton. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School and then completed his degree at Alexandria Technical College. For the past $5 OFF ANY SERVICE with this ad!

23 years, Lawrence has worked at Excelsior Appliance in Excelsior, Minnesota.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Lawrence’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, enjoying a nice campfire, and playing volleyball with his nieces and nephews. Lawrence enjoyed watching The Andy Griffith Show and Bonanza with his family.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Floyd Norton of Buffalo, Dave Norton of Bloomington, Karen Norton of Sierra Madre, California, Brenda Baird of Grand Rapids, Janice (Rick) Smith of St. Cloud, Sherry Anderson of Temple Hills, Maryland, William Norton of Sauk Centre, Ruby (Ken) Toenies of Randall, and Daniel (Emily) Norton of Woodbridge, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce Utne; brothers, Robert Norton and Ralph Norton; nephews, Eric Baird, Ryan Baird and Caleb Toenies; and niece, Nicolette Norton.

Casket bearers were Scott Baird, Ron Anderson, Nathan Toenies, Isaac Toenies, Ben Toenies, and Sam Toenies.

Marie Eva Karnes, age 90 of Maplewood, formerly of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at her home in Maplewood, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m.

Thursday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Marie Eva Rosty was born September 26, 1924 in Burtrum, Minnesota, to Thomas and Eva Rosty. She wed at the age of 17 when she married the love of her life, Laurence Karnes, in 1942, and was married for 71 years until Laurence passed in 2013.

Marie was a caretaker at Ramsey County Hospital for many years, and was a member at the Evangelical Brethren Church of Grey Eagle Minnesota for years, In her free time, Marie liked to garden, read, do puzzles and watch some of her favorite western movies.

Marie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and wife. Marie and Laurence spent their lives together mostly on their farm, north of Grey Eagle, where they raised their four children. Her family and friends will never forget the fond memories spent with

her at the cabin in Mora, Minnesota that she and Laurence owned. Grandchildren recall spending time agate and clam hunting there, near the river.

Marie was always a loving, passionate woman, and is survived by her sisters, Carrie Mallinger and Barb Emeott; sister-in-law, Marilyn Rosty; three sons, Gary (Linda) Karnes of McGregor, Dale (Laurie) Karnes of Oakhill, and Loren (Janet) Karnes of LeSueur; daughter, Lois (Rod) Forsburg of Hammond, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren, Tammy and Steven Karnes, Travis, Erin, and Jesse Karnes, Kristian and Kassandra Karnes, and Heather Sperl; and four greatgrandchildren, Katie and Tim, McKenna White, and Avianna Karnes.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Eva Rosty; husband, Laurence Eugene Karnes; sisters, Helen Bollig and Darline Jennings; brothers, Carl and Gordon Rosty; and grandson, Jacob Sperl.

Serving as casket bearers will be Travis, Jesse, Kristian, Kassee, Steven, and Erin Karnes, Heather Sperl, and Tim Schwietz.

Anthony S. “Tony” Meyer, age 82 of Swan Lake near Burtrum, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, July 6 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating and with a eulogy being read 5 minutes prior to the Mass. A private inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Melrose. Military honors will be provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Anthony Steven Meyer was born February 3, 1933 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to Anton and Ann (Waldherr) Meyer. He grew up in Grey Eagle and enlisted in the National Guard and later joined the Army. He married Carol in 1957 and they lived in Brooklyn Park for most of their married years. After retiring from H. Brooks and Co., they built a home on Swan Lake in 2007.

Tony was an avid outdoorsman; he loved fishing, hunting, and cooking. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends,

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I own a rental property that brings in enough to pay the taxes and insurance with a little left over.

Recently, I found out that my tenant, who just signed a new two-year lease, is subleasing the property for the short term as a vacation site. This kind of thing happened once before and is prohibited in the agreement. Do you think I should approach him about the situation or let it go until it becomes problematic?

-Catherine Dear Catherine, It’s already a problem, because he’s in violation of the lease agreement. Call him today and tell him to stop the sublease immediately. Let him know that he’ll be evicted if anything like this ever happens again.

This may sound harsh, but an agreement is an agreement. You may not have experienced any big problems up until now, but what happens when he pulls this again and the next people who come in are a bunch of partiers? You could end up with broken windows, holes in the walls and a bad reputation. On top of all that, what if they leave and he doesn’t have the money to fix things? It’s all on you. Why? Because you lost control of your property!

As a landlord, I always try to be gentle and nice but really clear about things. But this guy needs to understand that you mean what you say in the lease agreement. Once more, and he’s gone!

I’ve been trying to help with things on the outside, and recently I discovered she has about $20,000 in debt. This is in addition to the rent owed on her apartment. I don’t have a lot of money, but do you think I should start trying to pay some of these bills for her?

-Jeremy Dear Jeremy, I’m really sorry to hear about your relative. Addiction is painful thing for the addict and for their family and

friends. While what you’re suggesting is noble, my advice would be to leave the debt alone. I would, however, notify her landlord of what’s happened. If he won’t hold her place, then get her stuff out and turn over the keys so he or she can find another tenant.

As far as the debt obligations are concerned, just let her creditors cry and whine. They’re going to do that anyway, and you’re in no position to help financially at this point. Once she’s out and healthy again, one of the first things she’ll have to do is recreate her life and income. When that’s been done, then she needs to go back and make arrangements with her creditors.

But right now, she needs to concentrate on herself. And as her family, you need to pour as much love and support as you can into the healing process. You’ve got a great heart, Jeremy, but the money stuff can wait until she’s out, healthy and established again. Then, if you want and have been able to save a bit, you might gift her a little money to help her get started again.

Celebrating Albany, 125 years August 1st

The city of Albany will be celebrating their quasquicentennial on Saturday, August 1. The heritage day committee has a full slate of activities planned based on the generous support of residents, businesses, the Albany Lions, the Albany Area Jaycees and the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.

This article will cover the morning activities and please look for more information in the upcoming weeks.

The celebration is truly a three-day event beginning with the 14th Annual Albany Chrysler Center Car Show on Friday, July 31, and ending with Seven Dolors Parish Festival on Sunday. The first clue of the Medallion Hunt will be given at the car show at 7 p.m.

The “Sisters on the Fly” will be camping at the Albany North Park. “Sisters on the Fly” is the largest outdoor women’s group in the United States. This membership-based group supports women in their journey to become more adventurous using some vintage trailers. Their rules are simple – no men, no pets, no children and be nice. You will see some of the vintage trailers in Saturday’s 7 p.m. parade.

Journey to Health will host a health expo from 7-9 a.m. to start the festivities

God’s power to heal has an important place in Scripture. In fact, of the 1,257 narrative verses in the four Gospels, 484 are related specifically to healing. We believe in God’s healing power and know He can heal. David also believed in God’s healing power and believed that God could heal him. But where did David begin in his plea for God’s help?

David was hanging on to life by a thread. He felt total rejection by God because of a major sin he had committed. It had become a burden that was too heavy to bear, too big to overlook and too obvious to ignore. In fact he said that God “pierced him and His hand came down hard upon him.” He knew he was being punished by God for sinning against God. After thoroughly describing his mental, physical and spiritual sicknesses he cried out, “I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.” In his wisdom and from his former relationship with God, he realized that God would not bring about physical and mental healing unless David first confessed his need for spiritual healing.

There can be little doubt that sin and physical and mental illnesses are intimately connected. Yet, many only want God’s physical and mental healing. With God, all healing begins with confession and repentance.

This application was tabled until Planning and Zoning can go over the building ordinances.

The Waste Management contract was discussed. Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to go with Waste Management and a five (5) year contract for the City of Swanville refuse and recycling. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All council members voted in favor.

Motion carried. The contract was signed and a copy will be mailed to Waste Management.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office July 4, 2015: At 11:58 a.m.

Joshua Gill, age 23 of Royalton, was riding in the back of a pickup truck driven by Travis Ison, age 21 of Sandy Hook, KY on Nature Road, Great River Road in Two Rivers Township. Gill was holding down an inflatable raft so it

would not fly out. Gill fell out of the pickup while it was travelling 20 mph. Gill was transported to St. Cloud Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance for head injuries.

July 5, 2015: At approx. 8:10 p.m., there was an accident at St. Stanislaus Church in Bowlus. 17

year old Rachel Nihart from Royalton, was traveling northbound on 120th Avenue and attempted to turn east on to Main Street but was traveling too fast, went off the roadway, through a snow fence and struck an unfinished brick wall. Rachel was thrown off the dirt bike and sustained non-life threaten-

ing injuries. She was transported to St. Gabriel’s Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Bowlus First Response Team, and Gold Cross Ambulance.

July 7, 2015: At approx. 6:11 p.m., the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two vehicle accident on 120th Avenue in Pike Creek Township near Little Falls. A vehicle driven by 33 year old Jacqueline Garrison of Little Falls was northbound on 120th Avenue mak-

ing a left turn into a private driveway.

As Garrison turned into the driveway she was hit by a vehicle driven by 49 year old Antoinette Keskey-Debolt of Grey Eagle, MN who was traveling southbound on 120th Avenue. All parties involved, including KeskeyDebolt’s 16 year old passenger, Blake Keskey of Grey Eagle, sustained minor injuries but they were not transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the State Patrol, and Gold Cross Ambulance.

The Grey Eagle Housing Association is seeking someone to fill a part-time position as caretaker at Village View Apartments in Grey Eagle. Village View is a 24 unit housing project for the elderly and disabled.

The responsibilities include assisting tenants with some tasks and keeping the buildings and grounds in top condition. Contractors do major repairs.

The caretaker will need to be courteous at all times to residents and their guests, will consult with the manager on any concerns or problems and will work with the Grey Eagle Housing Board of Directors to maintain an efficient and safe project. Compensation for this position will depend on experience and qualifications.
