Killing it with kindness -By Harvey Mackay

One rainy night many years ago, a gentleman and his wife entered the lobby of a small hotel in Philadelphia.

The man asked the clerk if he had any rooms available.

The clerk, who was actually the hotel manager, was a friendly man who prided himself on superior customer service.

He said that unfortunately the hotel was completely booked. “However,” he said, “rather than send you out in the rain at 1 a.m. I would be happy to offer you my room. It’s not a suite, but it will be comfortable for the night.”

The man tried to object, but the clerk insisted. The next morning, as he

paid his bill, the gentleman said to the clerk: “You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States.”

Two years passed, but the two men stayed in touch. One day the clerk/ manager received a letter from the guest, inviting him to New York for a visit including a round-trip airline ticket. When the clerk/manager arrived in New York, the man met him and led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. He pointed to a brand-new building. “There is the hotel I want you to manage,” said the man.

“You must be joking,” said the astonished clerk/manager.

“I can assure you that I am not,” said the man, William Waldorf Astor, and the palace that he had built was the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

The moral of this story is you never know when kindness will come full circle.

Kind words and kind actions start with kind thoughts. In a hypercompetitive world, we might be tempted to take a dramatically different approach.

But that tactic doesn’t produce any winners.

Mean people are not happier, or necessarily more successful. If you don’t believe me, spend a few minutes on Twitter or Facebook. The comments are too frequently cruel or so extreme, and they breed even more ugliness. That’s

the definition of “anti-social media.”

Pastor and author C. Neil Strait said: “Kindness is more than deeds. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch.

It is anything that lifts another person.”

It even extends to the animal kingdom! Great Britain’s Newcastle University found that cattle treated with care and a “more personal touch” tend to produce more milk for farmers. The school studied over 500 farmers across the UK and – believe it or not – found that cows given names by their owners gave over 50 percent more milk than cattle that were nameless.

Contrary to the old saying, nice people can finish first. The key is to know how to use kindness to your advantage.

If you think you might need a refresher course, here are some steps you can take to make kindness a habit.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Swanville Carnival

Many of you have attended the Swanville Carnival. Some of you remember how it began and I’ll try to trace it’s change through the years. Keep in mind that many of the government regulations of today were not in effect in the early days of the Carnival.

The Swanville Lions originally brought a couple of carnival rides to town each summer as a treat to the local kids. These rides probably came from St. Cloud. That was all the festivities that were offered at that time.

The Lions then decided that maybe those in attendance would enjoy some liquid refreshments, so beer and pop were made available for sale. The attendees then asked if there was any food available, so a couple of the Lions had barbecue grills and one had a recipe for his wife’s barbecue chicken that he thought was very good. It was good and the two grills couldn’t keep up with the demand.

In the following years a grill was built which had a much greater capacity, which solved part of the need.

The chicken needed to be boiled before barbecuing, which was done in a local kitchen. Soon there were too many chickens to be boiled in one kitchen, so the boiling was moved to the local butcher shop.

A larger carnival was then hired to supply the additional rides needed to offer to the increasing crowds. Tap beer was also an improvement to the carnival crowd. Live music was also offered.

In the beginning, there were no bathroom facilities needed, but as the crowds increased, the need became apparent. Originally the local homes offered the use

achievements. When you are good to yourself, you are best to others.

• Treat everyone with respect. Don’t worry about who’s on top. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated, regardless of their position or job title. No one is too big to be kind and courteous, but many people are too small.

• Say no when necessary. You can’t do everything.

Say no, but be polite and positive. It’s kinder to say no to something when you cannot devote adequate time or attention than to do a half-hearted job.

• Plant seeds of kindness. Do something nice every day. Kindness pays most when you don’t do it for payback.

• Take the high road. Trust me, it’s the road less traveled. It’s a big wide highway with no traffic jams.

And no road rage.

There’s an old story about a king who had a beautiful ring and three sons who each wanted the ring.

When the king died, he left three rings for his sons and a note that said, “My dear sons, one of these rings is real, and two are fake. The way you will know who has the real ring is that the son with the real ring will be kind and generous to all people.”

Each of the three sons spent the rest of his life being good to others – to prove that he had the real ring.

The parade observers are usually about 4 people deep on both sides of the street along the entire mile long parade route.

After 54 years, the Swanville Carnival has developed into a large community get-together. There are now more than 3,500 chicken dinners served. The Tom Kuehne continued to pg 4

of their bathrooms for the ladies, but that became a problem, so they were encouraged to go to the local restaurant or Liquor Store. Obituaries Taylor J. Toenyan

Taylor J. Toenyan, age 21 of Grey Eagle, died unexpectedly on July 2, 2016 at his apartment in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, July 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Taylor Joe Toenyan was born March 19, 1995 in Melrose, Minnesota to Jim and Cheryl (Roerick) Toenyan. Taylor graduated from Melrose High School in 2013. Taylor was currently employed at Ice-O Metric Contracting, Inc. in Big Lake.

Taylor enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He especially loved snowmobiling and fixing anything he possibly could. Taylor was always willing

to help someone out whenever he felt he was needed. He always seemed to be the life of the party and had such a big heart.

Taylor also spent a lot of time with his niece and nephew and treasured those moments. Everyone will remember Taylor by the contagious smile that he always had on his face and he always had the ability to make you smile.

Survivors include his parents, Jim and Cheryl Toenyan of Grey Eagle; siblings, Jessica (Greg) Nelson of Avon, Stephanie (Nate) Brenner of Freeport, and Brandon (Amber) Toenyan of Grey Eagle; niece and nephew Ava and Aiden Brenner, and baby Nelson due in September; grandparents Linus and JoAnne Roerick of Grey Eagle and Darlene Toenyan of Grey Eagle; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Taylor was preceded in death by his grandpa, Justin Toenyan.

Serving as casket bearers will be Jessica and Greg Nelson, Stephanie and Nate Brenner, and Brandon and Amber Toenyan. Serving as cross bearer will be Dale Hartung and scripture bearer will be Sandy Toenyan.

Donald B. Hinnenkamp, age 64 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 while doing fieldwork near his farm in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 5 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following lunch.

Mary Ann Wendt 83, died Tuesday, July 5th with family by her side. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church in St. Rosa. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.

Mary Ann was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on December 10th, 1932, to John and Margaret (Michaels) Stitch. At a very young age she worked hard to help care for her siblings after her mother passed away. Her hard work and determination followed her in life. Mary Ann lived most of her early adult life in St. Paul and moved to Wisconsin in 1976 to a hobby farm. She worked various jobs through her years but her work never stopped after a 9-5 job as she loved to garden at the farm and care for the animals.

She was active with friends and family as she enjoyed bowling and playing cards.

It was a daily scene that she could be found watching birds and wildlife while at their countryside house by Grey Eagle, MN. Mary Ann could accomplish anything she set her mind to. She was remembered by her grandchildren as the woman who could fix or sew anything. She always helped those in need and gave advice to

born December 31, 1951 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Robert and Lorraine (Van Beck) Hinnenkamp. In June of 1980 he took over the family farm north of Melrose. He was united in marriage to Donna Jansen on October 11, 1980 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa.

Donald was a man of few words, devoted to his farm and family.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Jansen of Melrose; two children, Nicole Jansen-Hinnenkamp of Beaufort, South Carolina and Isaak (Katie) Hinnenkamp of Melrose; brother, Duane (Bernita) Hinnenkamp of Melrose; and brother-inlaw, Gene (Sue) Lieser of Circle Pines.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Diane Lieser.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My husband and I have seven kids. What parts of your program work best for large families?

-Karen Dear Karen, My entire plan works for a large family.

Larger families just have more expenses. What does change — and you already knew this — is that it can be a larger financial burden. This isn’t criticism; it’s just a mathematical fact.

When you kick things into overdrive like you folks have done, two things have happened. One, you’ve extended the time that you’re going to be supporting the kids financially. Two, you’ve got a lot of baby birds to feed and clothe. Unless you have an astronomical income, it slows down the process of hitting financial goals like getting out of debt, because you’ve got a drain on the math side of things. It’s a wonderful drain; it’s a glorious drain; but mathematically speaking where the money is concerned, it’s still a drain.

You really don’t have any choice but to do a budget. Having seven kids doesn’t give you an excuse to live out of control or mean that living out of control without a plan is the definition of success. You’ve got to set more emergency categories aside in your budget. You’ve got to budget heavier for food, medical, transportation and things like that, because you’ve got more things pulling at you — and your money!

would need to live comfortably after retirement.

-John Dear John, A commonsense rule of thumb, if you’ve got your money invested in good growth stock mutual funds, is to pull from those funds at a rate that is lower than which they are growing. Otherwise, you’ll destroy them, right?

I tell folks if they want to pull off six percent to eight percent — I’m comfortable doing eight percent — then you’ve got to decide exactly how much you want to live on and what that means for your nest egg. If you want to live on $80,000 a year, it means you have to have a $1 million nest egg. If you want to live on $40,000 a year, then you need a half-million dollar nest egg for what we’re talking about here.

To get into that a little bit further, I would advise going to Chris Hogan’s website. He’s got a tool on there that takes just a few minutes, and it will give you exact numbers on what you need to do. It’s ChrisHogan360.com, and the tool is called the R:IQ — your Retire Inspired Quotient.

You can walk through it, and in just a few minutes you’ll know exactly what’s going on and what needs to happen!

Our ability to trust, however, fluctuates. It seems to come and go depending on the situation. That’s why he added “at all times.” Our trust in God is to be constant and continual, not casual and conditional. Some of us have a fair-weather faith. If we do not get the answers we want when we want them we usually rely on our own strengths and strategies and the results are usually second best rather than God’s best.

And we prove to Him that we trust in Him when we pour our hearts out to Him. It’s like emptying a jar of water by turning it upside down and letting every drop fall to the ground. We must “let go and let God” have all of our wishes and wants, our sighs and sorrows.

A Cure for the Summertime Blues

By Dave Ramsey As the weather heats up and summer arrives, don’t make the mistake of letting your team and your business cool down.

For many entrepreneurs, summer is the slowest time of the year. The kids are out of school, and many of your customers and clients are on vacation. If you’re not careful, you could be lulled into a sense of helplessness and find yourself coasting through an entire quarter.

The best way to create unstoppable momentum is to keep moving – no matter the season. Stay productive and focused now, and you’ll reap even bigger benefits throughout the year. Not sure how to do that? No problem. Here are a few ideas to jump-start your summer.

Evaluation: The time for your kids to receive report cards may be over, but this is a great time for reflection, evaluation and giving yourself a grade. A great way to do this is by revisiting your yearly goals. Pull out that list and see how you’re doing in business and in life.

When teaching goal setting, the late Zig Ziglar always referred to the “Wheel of Life.” The wheel has spokes and sections that represent the areas of our lives – career, finances, spirituality, physical well-being, intellectual development, family and social interaction. In order to be successful as a whole, we must address and attempt to be well-rounded in each area.

Looking in from the outside: If business is slow, and you’re not overwhelmed with a million things to do, take a road trip strictly for business. A couple of hours down the road in any direction will do. The purpose? To check out the competition.

Visit other small business owners to see what they’re doing right and what

you’re doing better, pick up some ideas and get re-inspired. Or simply clear your head on a nice, long drive and let the creativity flow. Dream up new ideas, or revisit others that didn’t work out so well and figure out why.

Network and socialize: Summer is a great time to network. There are picnics, barbecues and hometown festivals all over, so start attending community events and get to know people.

The groundwork is often laid for successful sales through the connections we make while in social settings.

The more people you know, the more opportunities you’ll have, so make time for others. The benefits are well worth the effort!

Read, read, read: The average millionaire reads at least one non-fiction book per month. When asked to list the keys to their success, most of them ranked hard work first, followed by education and self-improvement.

Leaders are readers, so become a bookworm if you’re not one already. I’m such a fan of reading that I require all new team members to read five essential books in their first 90 days on the job.

So stop looking at summer as an unavoidable downtime for your business.

July 14-17, 2016 Magel Carnival Midway THURSDAY, JULY 14 Played with a hard paddle and perforated plastic ball, a game similar to badminton and tennis, pickle ball began as a backyard family game in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. The game, now played with formalized rules on a badminton court, was named after a family dog called Pickles who chased the balls and hid them in the bushes.

Eventually, Pickles’ ball became pickleball.

Today, pickleball is recognized as a fast-paced game, great for hand-eye coordination, mental alertness and socializing. It’s not a sport of brute strength; it’s about accuracy and placement. You learn different techniques and strategies from other players. One of the challenges of this game is developing fast reflexes to respond to a wide range of shots to return over the net. You need to learn to work with a partner to cover the court and be ready to return the ball from all areas. There is a skill in being able to strategically return the ball so your op-

A group from Long Lake have taped off a tennis court in Grey Eagle and try to play at least once a week. “We would like to develop more courts at the Swanville high school but we need more players,” said Larry Kirschenmann, one of the players from Long Lake and a Pickleball Association’s ambassador for the area. “We have paddles and balls that beginners can use to see if they enjoy the game. If we get a good response we can schedule instructional time for the beginners and develop additional courts.”

Todd County Sheriff’s Dept.

June 30, 2016: At approx. 00:04 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle accident at the intersection of County Road 98 and County Road 2, Grey Eagle. A 2011 Chevy Cruze, driven by a juvenile of Long Prairie, failed to stop at the intersection of County Road 98 and County Road 2. The vehicle crossed over County Road 2 and entered the ditch and corn field.

The vehicle sustained moderate damage, nobody was injured in the accident.

June 30, 2016: At 09:04 Todd County Sheriffs Office received a report of damage to property on 404 State St. W., Grey Eagle.

Harriet Walburn of Grey Eagle reported that over the night of the 29th of June someone had struck her mailbox and garbage can causing damage. It appeared that someone traveling west bound on State St. W., Grey Eagle had left the road striking these items and then leaving. Any information on this incident please contact the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

June 30, 2016: At 22:27 the Grey Eagle Fire Department responded to a small grass fire on 241st Ave, Sauk Centre. The fire was started by a power line which had arched near the area. The power company was called to the scene and fixed the power line.

July 4, 2016: At 00:15 the Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle roll-over crash that occurred on County Rd. 104 on the north end of Long Lake. The driver, Allen Kruzel of Swanville, received minor injuries from the crash. His 2013 Dodge Ram truck was totaled. Long Prairie Ambulance and Grey Eagle Fire Dept. assisted at the scene.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson and Tony Maciej. Absent: Jay Bartkowicz, Jim Molitor. Steve Backowski, Morrison County Engineer, reported that he had a surveying crew out this past week. The 2017 road projects he estimated to cost approx. $62,000.00.

That cost did not include repairing bad spots on 4th street where a water line was put in and a sewer spot was repaired that would be an estimated $20,000.00 more to repair those. On second street and around to Berkey Avenue to First Street Backowski stated would have to be done by a consultant firm because of the more intense amount of work which will need to done. If the council plans on doing this project in 2017 Backowski would like to know by the end of October 2016.

The Pillsbury Beach has a discrepancy as to where the city property lines are. The owners of the property which was first donated to the Swanville School and then to the City will have a deed wrote up and then the city attorney will look over the deed and will have his opinion for the next council meeting.

The Swanville Lions Club is requesting a 3 day temporary strong liquor license for the Swanville Carnival July 8, 9, and 10.

Tony Maciej made a motion to give the Swanville Lions Club a 3 day temporary strong liquor license for a fee of $80.00 for July 8, 9, and 10, 2016. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The Clerk will send in the necessary paper work to the State of MN. Gene Epling will be retiring and the city maintenance worker would like a part time helper for the summer. Tony Maciej made a motion to have the Mayor and the city maintenance worker interview people and hire a part time summer worker. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Meeting adjourned 7:55 p.m.
