Don’t give in to negativity -By Harvey Mackay One Sunday afternoon, a cranky grandfather was visiting his family.

As he lay down to take a nap, his mischievous grandson decided to have a little fun by putting Limburger cheese on Grandpa's mustache.

Soon, Grandpa awoke with a snort and charged out of the bedroom saying, “This room stinks.” Through the house he went, finding every room smelling the same.

Desperately he made his way outside only to find that “The whole world stinks!”

So it is when we fill our minds with negativism. Everything we experience and everyone we encounter will carry the scent we hold in our mind.

Maya Angelou, one of my favorite poets and authors, said: “I am convinced that the negative has power and if you allow it to perch in your house, in your mind, in your life, it can take you over.”

We all have negative thoughts from time to time. But studies show constant negativity can lead to depression, anxiety, personality disorders and even mental illness.

That’s why I don’t recommend hanging around with negative people because they bring you down. A negative person sees the difficulty in every opportunity, while a positive person sees the opportunity in every difficulty. It’s better to surround yourself with positive people who support each other when the urge to be negative threatens.

English mystery writer Dorothy Sayers said this about negative thinking: “Tolerance, apathy, inaction … the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is

nothing for which it will die.”

According to the “Power of Positivity,” there are three leading causes of negative thoughts.

Fear of the future: People often fear the unknown and are unsure what the future might bring. This often leads to predicting failure and disaster. Worrying about the future is a waste of time and energy. Accept there is a limit to what you can change in the future and strive to focus on the present instead.

Anxiety about the present: Anxiety about the present is understandable. Many of us worry about what people think of us, whether we’re doing a good job at work and what the traffic will be like on the way home. Negative thinkers often come up with the worst-case scenario. Organization and routine can help with banishing negative thoughts.

Shame about the past: Have you ever stayed awake worrying about something you did last week, or even last year? Everyone does and says things they feel embarrassed about, but negative thinkers tend to dwell on past mistakes and failures more than others. Just accept that the event happened and consider how you can prevent it from happening again in the future.

Author Emma-Marie Smith suggests asking yourself these five questions when you feel negative thoughts creeping in: • Is the thought true? Is there a basis for this negative belief?

• Is the thought giving you power, or is it taking your power away?

• Can you put a positive spin on this thought or learn from it?

• What would your life look like if you

didn’t have these negative beliefs?

• Is the thought glossing over an issue that needs addressing?

The famous inventor Thomas Edison used to say his deafness was his greatest blessing – a blessing because it saved him from having to listen to reasons why things couldn't be done.

I love that thought. In fact, I would suggest that practicing “selective hearing” is a positive step toward filtering the negativity that discourages you from trying new things. It’s okay to let folks share their opinions, but you are not obligated to let them make decisions for you.

Think about the famous story of David and Goliath. A small boy with only a slingshot and a few stones was facing a fierce giant who could crush him with one hand. David could have looked at his formidable foe and thought, “He’s really big. And mean. And scary. And I am none of those things. I’m outta here.”

But he turned his thoughts toward what he could do. Looking at the giant towering over him, he said instead, “That guy is so big.

There’s no way I can miss him.”

Mackay’s Moral: Negative thinking will not produce positive results.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Swanville Carnival

It's that time of the year again. Swanville Carnival. The time when a town of 350 people swells to thousands.

Everybody having fun. Lots of rides for the kids and also older kids.

Lots of libation for those in need. Lots of Chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, malts and pie. A parade on Sunday, live music every afternoon and night and a midway with lots of booths. A great opportunity to talk with folks you haven't been in touch with for a year.

It's been 59 years since the Swanville Carnival began. Originally it was a picnic at

the park with a couple of barbecues cooking chicken, some pop for the kids and a special recipe for barbecue sauce. (The same recipe is used today, because it was so good.)

This year we will serve over 4000 chicken meals. Some barbecued and some deep fried.

Bingo sessions in air conditioned comfort.

Air conditioned Senior Center with home-made treats and ice cream.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce Have you ever felt like you are just plain worn out? Nothing more to give?

Sometimes we have so much going on that we get overwhelmed easily. Many times, we live our life for us, not really caring for anyone else, but there are needy people all around us. Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

So, can I just encourage you to help people, no matter how you “feel” at the time.

When I was a licensed contractor, I had to do continuing education every year. It seems like the topic every year was water and mold issues. One thing they said was, when framing a house, put on your water flow glasses and look for any issue of trapping water. Many of you know that with the roof systems of the houses being built today, you could easily have a roof that ends at a wall. So our instructor would say, “wear your water glasses," intentionally looking for the areas that water could enter the building.

Galatians 6:10 says “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” So, LISTEN UP! Please wear your “doing good glasses." Intentionally look for people that might need your help. I know you are tired, our society has too much going on. The last part of verse 10 says in my own words, “take every opportunity to help people… especially

Jeanette M. Stansbury

Jeanette M. Stansbury, age 80 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating.

Inurnment will be in Grove Lake Cemetery near Padua.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Jeanette Mae Barchenger was born August 1, 1941 in Los Angeles, California to Robert and Marvel (Torgerson) Barchenger. Jeanette moved to Sauk Centre and graduated from Sauk Centre High School. On March 28, 1981 she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Stansbury at a Lutheran Church in Corona, California.

Jeanette worked at St. Michael’s Hospital and Food n Fuel in Sauk Centre, and later worked at Jennie-O Turkey Store in Melrose. One of her favorite things to do was to spend time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Bob Stansbury of Sauk Centre; children, Julene (Greg) Cole of Phoenix, Arizona, Daniel Mahn of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Cheryl Stansbury of Foley; ten grandchildren, Eddy, Jacob, Alex, Amy, Sarah, Justine, Justin, McKenzie, Ella, and Lilly; and brother, David (Sandi) Barchenger of Forest Lake.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; and granddaughter, Ashley Stansbury.

Barbara A. “Barb” Hollermann, age 82 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Arockiya Newton officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Barbara Ann Andres was born December 22, 1939 in Marshall, Minnesota to Lester and Dorothy (Zellmer) Andres. On May 21, 1960 she was united in marriage to Vernon “Vern” Hollermann at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Barb worked at St. Mary’s cafeteria and for the Melrose Public Elementary School as a teacher’s aide. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Mothers. Barb enjoyed crafting, sewing, working puzzles, camping, cooking, gardening, and collecting angels and Snow Buddies.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Vern Hollermann of Melrose; children, Mike (Val) Hollermann of Cold Spring, Steve (Deb) Hollermann of Milaca, Deb (Ernie) Bielefeld of Minneapolis, and Scott (Megan) Hollermann of Ponsford; eight grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren; brother, Roger (Linda) Andres; sisters, Sharon (Al) Lewis and Pat (Dean) Rapp; sisters-in-law, Darlene Andres, Sister Ephrem Hollermann, and Betty Schloemer; and brotherin-law, Bob Hollermann.

Dennis J. Sand

Dennis J. Sand, age 69 of Albany, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, June 25, 2022. Dennis was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2017, he had a stroke in March of 2021. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11a.m. Friday, July 8 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:45 a.m. prior to Mass in the Church Gathering Area.

Dennis was born on May 14, 1953 to Ervin and Elizabeth (Kraemer) Sand. He grew up on a small family farm on the northwest side of Albany. He spent his younger years working on the farm and for the family businesses. Dennis spoke fondly of growing up on the farm, he would share stories of the trouble he was always getting into with his siblings. He also enjoyed playing football and wrestling in high school.

After graduating from the Albany High School, he worked at the local radio station, KASM. He loved working with Cliff & Clyde and dreamed of life as a radio DJ! Dennis also worked at the Albany Telephone Company.

Dennis met Joan Gerads on a blind date that was set up by Jim and Jean Sand at the KASM Christmas party. They married on October 25, 1975 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

When they were first married Dennis’ interest in politics was sparked when he took a job driving and working for a candidate for the US House of Representatives. After that he worked for SandMitchell-Smith construction company. From there Dennis and his wife went into business with his parents, building and running the Sands Restaurant for 20 years! Later they purchased and ran Freeway Liquors until his retirement at the end of 2015. During this time Dennis and Joan had 5 children.

Dennis always had a strong work ethic and a love for the community but being in business for himself really drove his passions. He proudly served the City of Albany for 27 years; serving on the Albany City Council from 1985 to 2007, Mayor of Albany from 2007 to 2012, and Park Board and Economic Development Authority (EDA) liaison during that time. Dennis was also honored to serve on the Albany Mutual Telephone Association board from 2011-2016.

Dennis enjoyed golf, hunting, and frequenting local businesses. He looked forward to US Bank Stadium Vikings games and his yearly visit to Palm Springs with his friend Paul.

Dennis was known for his generosity, his frank advice, his honesty, his tireless commitment to his businesses, and ensuring his children grew up to be dependable and hard-working.

Dennis was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic United Financial and the Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

He will be missed by his wife Joan; his children, Janelle Sand of Albany, Laura (Blake) Cheeley of Ramsey, Tracy (Scott) Schneider of Albany, and Robert Sand of Albany; his grandchildren, Mia, Hadley, Harper & Tyler Cheeley and Parker and Lydia Schneider; his siblings, Jim (Jean) Sand of Avon, Judy (Eldred) Dingmann of Monticello, Dale (Mary) Sand of Cold Spring, Leo Sand of Avon, Tom (Ginger) Sand of Rochester, Brian (Sherri) Sand of Albany; his sister-in-law, Karen Weber-Sand of St. Joseph; his goddaughter, Angela Teske of Albany; his many nieces & nephews and greatnieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father Ervin and Betty Sand, his son Joey, his sisters Joyce Winter, Diane Sand, Mary Lou Sand, Mary Kay Sand, and his brother-in-law Bert Winter.

Memorials are preferred. Memorials will be donated to Holy Family School, Seven Dolors Endowment Fund and the Alzheimer’s Society.

John E. Bieringer Jr., age 69 of Sauk Centre, passed away u n e x p e c t e d l y, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 1, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, July 8 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Pastor Trinity Opp officiating. Inurnment will be at the St. Anthony of Padua Cemetery in Padua.

John Edward Bieringer, Jr. was born October 3, 1952 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to John and Dorothy (Jenc) Bieringer. On December 10, 2004 he was united in marriage to Jan Dalen in Duluth, Minnesota. John became a business owner of Dairyland Supply, Inc. in 1974. He was actively involved in the St. Cloud Farm Show for many years and was a member of the Minnesota – South Dakota Equipment Dealers Association.

He retired in 2017 when he sold the business after more than 40 years.

John enjoyed drag racing, RVing, traveling, operating heavy equipment, winters in Florida, classic car restoration and cruising, and spending time in the woods surrounding his home.

John was a member of Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria Minnesota. He was a member of the Country Cruisers locally and participated in many car shows in Minnesota and Florida. He was a member of Fellowship of Christian Farmers and Racers for Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Jan Bieringer; children, Lisa Bieringer (Kevin New) of Stinson Beach, California, Jacquelyn Bieringer (Phil Drake) of Chatham, New York, John Anthony Bieringer (Siw) of Sauk Centre, and Jessica Bieringer of Sauk Centre; seven grandchildren; and sister, Pat Lucas of Browerville.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Bieringer; and brothers, Bob Bieringer and Eugene Bieringer.

Terrence Peter Morgel was born on November 13, 1951 in St. Cloud to Roman and Tina (Krupa) Morgel. He married Christine Pintok on September 21, 1974. Terry worked as an electrician, and was a member of the IBEW Union #292. He was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel and the Stearns County Pioneer Club. Terry loved NASCAR, his 1973 Duster and listening to classic rock, from his extensive record collection. He was organized and meticulous, and that was demonstrated in his work life and carried over to his personal life.

He was thoughtful, caring and considerate of his neighbors. Terry was so proud of his children and their accomplishments. Family and his relationships were always a priority. He loved giving his grandkids tractor rides and spending time together.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 47 years, Christy of Avon; daughters, Miranda (Damien) Nichols of Maplewood and Lisa (Toby Cryns) Morgel Cryns of Minneapolis; son, Jason (Merry) of Avon; grandchildren, Camden, Keller, and Baxter Nichols, and Lucy, Ansel, and Elias Cryns; and sister, Linda (Dale) Wentland of Holdingford. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dear Motor Medics, You guys make it easy for us when we need to repair our cars and I’m hoping you can shed a little light on a purchase question too. I have narrowed down my search to two vehicles that are relatively the same except that one is a front-wheel drive while the other is all-wheel drive. The AWD drive vehicle has 10,000 more miles but has the extra feature, so it is priced the same. I don’t see a lot of snowfalls in my area and until now have managed to get by every season with nothing more than a FWD car. If I go with the all-wheel drive system will fuel mileage suffer significantly, and will the overall maintenance cost be a lot higher?

-David in Manhattan, Kansas Dear David, You will have to make your own decision as you will be the one making the purchase but we can hopefully help you a bit. All-wheel drive vehicles get around better in the snow than their front-wheel drive counterparts, but if you are in an area that does not see much snow or ice and they plow it quickly, do you really need it? The fuel mileage will be a little lower, there will be slightly faster tire wear, and there are more parts to wear out.

While the front-wheel drive is not as nimble in snow, a lot of people give that up for the savings they gain in other areas.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I recently purchased a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with about 130k miles on it equipped with the 3.1 engine. The car runs great, but when the engine is cold, I hear a very loud banging or tapping sound until the engine is thoroughly warmed up. The sound

is not as pronounced when the temperature is warm outside although it is still there. I have consulted with a few people including GM techs who tell me that this engine is known for this cold start noise which is caused by piston slap and that this is considered normal.

Is there something I should or could do to minimize this? Are any engine oil additives that would help this?

-Darrin in Brainerd, Minnesota Dear Darrin, What these technicians have been telling you is correct. These engines tend to make noise upon a cold start, the colder the engine the louder the noise. Some people fear they are going to fly apart because they are so loud. With age they tend to become worse, but we can’t recall one that has come apart because of it. As a mechanic and current owner of a vehicle with this engine I’ve tried everything I can in the way of engine oil additives and haven’t found any that make even the slightest difference in the way it sounds so I’ve learned to live with it as many people with these cars have had to do.

Stand With Our Women

By Sherry Kutter Dear Neighbors, We continue to hear the words of our leaders touting Small Government is the way to go, but now they just crawled in bed with me! Ick! Of course, I’m speaking of the overturning of Roe V Wade by our Supreme Court. It looks like Small Government really means removing regulations that were there to protect us from Corporate greed and pollution. Where will this stop? It won’t.

The Government will tell us who we can marry. Women will have no contraceptives and be forced into pregnancy. Women (and our daughters and granddaughters) and their precious 12 children will be doomed to lives of poverty, hunger, minimal education, and subservience to men. Be alert. It appears this is part of their plan. Is the Church ready and able to get back into the orphanage business again? Will an unpreventable miscarriage be ruled a homicide? Under proposed legislation, neighbors, family and all will be able to silently turn each of us into authorities for any infraction, instilling fear into us all.

The Government and Supreme Court want us and all citizens of all faiths to obey the Bible. But here are some rules that they refuse to follow. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Remember that God will harshly judge those who judge others. There are over 2,000 Bi-

ble verses about helping the poor but the rich and powerful leaders obviously don’t think this applies to them.

The Bible directs us to tell the truth, do not judge, have compassion, feed the poor, forgive others and love your neighbor. Our Christian judges and politicians must have lost their faith by the time they got to these verses. They aren’t aware that their lives would be much richer if they followed these Biblical directives. Let’s not forget that forced pregnancies kill women. Hunger and poverty kill. The death penalty kills. Our $20 billion guns and ammo industry kills.

Our Supreme Court has become just another powerful political tool for the Government to control us. The balance of power between the Supreme Court and the people has been lost. We know of other societies where women are owned and controlled by men.

Forcing women into unwanted pregnancies is only the beginning.

Government has no right to control a woman’s body. Let’s vote for leaders who will honor women’s rights before it’s too late.

Swanville City • June 7, 2022 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej. Also present: Dan Thieschafer and reporter Terry Lehrke.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, May 3, 2022 were reviewed. A motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Land Use Permits were presented to council, Bryan Allen would like to add a 13’x20’ cement slab/sidewalk by garage/10’x10’ cement slab at 304 DeGraff Ave. This is a commercial lot and meets all the set backs. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for Allen. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Diane Cornell would like to do some cement work to detour rain by garage/replace front steps/widen sidewalk on the north side of house. All set backs have been met. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for Cornell. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Frank Gessell would like to add a 20’x20’ cement slab next to the east of existing driveway. All set backs have been met. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for Gessell. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. all members voted in favor, motion carried.

All permit fees have been paid.

Dan Thieschafer was present to inquire on the progress of the land lots in the First Berkey Addition. At this time council feels the lots will not be buildable in 2023. The process of the water storage tank, wells and the new addition is moving very slow. No money from the government has been approved for any of the projects.

The Energy and Environment grant money which has been received will have to be used before the end of June. So far, the new LED bulbs in the main street lights have been installed. Trees are in the process of being ordered to put along Springbrook Drive.

The museum is moving along well and is hoped to be finished by the Carnival in July.

Over grown lawns and junk vehicles were discussed. A list of violators will be gathered and letters will be sent out to those residents.

The culvert at the end of 5th Street East was discussed. City maintenance will get Big Stone Excavating to dig it out where it pools.

Swanville Lions are requesting a 3-day strong beer license for the Swanville Carnival, July 8, 9, & 10, 2022. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the license with an $80.00 fee, the same as the previous year. John Dragseth second the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

There was discussion on city residents not hooked up to city water where available. It was decided Mayor Lange will get in contact with the city attorney to move forward in notifying residents not hooked up to city water and the steps that will be taken to enforce the process.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the Swanville Center.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Tony Maciej to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 7:30 pm.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Medical: July 5, 2022: At approximately 1:49 P.M., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a medical at 32684 Oakland Road in Oak township. The caller was reporting a 34-year-old male, found inside a grain bin, and that he was unresponsive. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Melrose Police Department, Freeport Fire Department, Melrose Fire Department, and the Melrose Ambulance Service responded to the scene. Thomas Holdvogt had been located unconscious in the grain bin by a family member. When first responders arrived on scene, Holdvogt was removed from the grain bin by fire personnel and lifesaving efforts were started. Medical intervention efforts continued and Holdvogt was transported to CentraCare Hospital in Melrose. Those efforts were ultimately unsuccessful and Holdvogt was later pronounced deceased. An autopsy from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will be preformed as part of the investigation into this matter.
