The best lessons are short, sweet and useful -By Harvey Mackay Readers of this column are remarkable when it comes to telling me what they like most about my weekly musings.

Of course, I’m honored when they tell me they have posted my words on company bulletin boards or used the lessons as motivation.

But without question, the most frequent feedback I get is that the column-ending morals are a very useful summation of the message. Occasionally I compile a list of my favorite morals from the past couple of years. Be my guest to share them!

• Let curiosity turn “I don’t know” into “I want to find out.”

• The biggest mistake you can make is pretending that you didn’t make one.

• When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at often change.

• When you talk to yourself, make sure you listen carefully.

• Don’t let your fears get in your head – get ahead of them.

• Take control of your attitude before it takes control of you.

• Don’t worry about what you could do if you lived your life over; get busy with what’s left.

• A little spark can lead to a blazing success.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne It’s Summer

It seems like we’ve been waiting for summer since last summer. It’s here! 90 plus temps and high humidity. Time for ticks, skeets and deer-fly’s.

They wait for summer to come too.

When driving through the country we sometimes catch the odor from some farmer emptying his manure pit. We also may notice the smell of fresh-cut hay, which brings back memories for some of us.

Maybe we will notice the sweet, pleasant odor of corn blooming.

Camp fires, barbecues and the special odor of the lawn mower or the gas trimmer engine.

We see many boats being pulled by vehicles, which may make us wonder if it is true that the boats spend 8 times more hours on the road than they spend on the water. Oh well, they are made to look beautiful on a trailer.

Traffic around the lakes increase by at least 700% in summer. During the cold winter months, the lake is evidently much less attractive than it is when the weather gets hot. Oh, I forgot, that’s why God invented boats!

What about the human bodies being exposed so that the body can tan from the sunlight or maybe it is an opportunity to have bare skin shown for the purpose of creating interest by members of the opposite sex.

I guess everyone needs to make their own decision about this matter.

One thing that happens in summer is the recurrence of celebrations by almost every town. They vary from a small parade to simply attract visitors, which in many cases are individuals who come back to their home town to meet people they knew in their youth. Other towns

Obituaries Ralph J. Blenker

Ralph J. Blenker, age 80 of Albany, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on We d n e s d a y, June 28, 2017 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Rev. Isaiah Frederick, O.S.B. officiated and Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. and Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. concelebrated.

Entombment was held in the parish cemetery.

Ralph Joseph Blenker was born August 17, 1936 in Oak Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Philomena (Schwinghammer) Blenker.

He was united in marriage to Corrine Brang on September 4, 1961 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

The couple resided south of Albany and farmed their entire life. They welcomed eleven children.

Ralph was a hard worker and loved farming! He loved the dairy life and tending to his cows. He enjoyed springtime, fieldwork, driving tractor, checking the crops, and was proud to

Ralph was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of Catholic United Financial, Albany Mutual Fire Insurance, American Dairy Association, Dairy Herd Improvement Association, a member on the Dairy Advisory Board, and Albany American Legion Post 482.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Corrine Blenker of Albany; children, Barbara Blenker Wehlage of St. Cloud, James Blenker of Albany, Beverly (Tom) Lieser of Albany, Brenda (Thomas) Wehlage of Sauk Rapids, Rachel Blenker of Brooklyn Park, Gail (Peter) Waldorf of Corcoran, Gary Blenker of Freeport, Pamela (Joe) Loehr of Spring Hill, Stacy (Jayson) Revoir of Royalton, Ryan Blenker of Freeport, Corey (Manda) Blenker of Albany; 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother, Allen (MaryAnn) Blenker of Albany; and sister, Rita (Tom) Middendorf of Freeport.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Darlene; nephews, Karl Middendorf, Kevin Blenker, and Ronald Blenker; and mother and father-in-law.

Serving as urn bearer was Corey Blenker. Cross bearer was Tanner Blenker and scripture bearer was Craig Lieser.

Honorary bearers were the Anniversary Group.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Jane M. Kurtti, age 96 of Grey Eagle, formerly of Motley, died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 5 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose. A family inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Benedict’s Cemetery in Avon.

Jane Marie Staddon was born November 10, 1920 in Indian Creek Township, Pulaski County, Indiana to William and Dora May (Roetruck) Staddon. She was united in marriage to Emil Kurtti on March 2, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois. The couple moved to

Motley, Minnesota and farmed until their retirement in 1998. Jane and Emil moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas to care for their daughter, JoAnn, who had cancer. JoAnn died in 2005 and Emil died in 2006. In May of 2007, Jane married Tony Beuning.

Jane was very knowledgeable about history and loved working and correctly completing the St. Cloud Times crossword puzzles daily.

Patricia P. (Kolashefsky) Mighall, age 90, of Bertha MN passed away on June 29, 2017 at the Central Todd County Care Center in Clarissa MN. Patricia was born on February 9, 1927 in Horsham, Sussex, England, to Percival and Ivy (Middleton) Chart. On March 28, 1945, she married Walt Kolashefsky. She emigrated to America where she resided in Cheyenne, WY, Brighton, CO, and finally Bertha, MN. Together they had

three children, Terry, Tim and Aleta. Her children were the lights of her life. She was a homemaker and mother.

On April 1, 1972, Patricia married Cyril Mighall and they lived on a farm east of Bertha. She was a Home Health Aide for many years. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and gardening, and also enjoyed her many cats and dogs.

Patricia is survived by a brother, Alan Chart; her children, Terry Kole of Bertha, MN, Tim Kole of Thornton, CO, and Aleta (Walter) Edin of Upsala, MN; grandchildren, Heather Edin, Heidi LaCoursiere, Ryan Kole, Jennie and Jimmy Schraufnagel, and Jessie Kole; fourteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ivor; sisters Ruby, Mavis and Yvonne; and two husbands.

Burial will be in Peace Evangelical Cemetery, Bertha, MN. Arrangements were with the Schuller Family Funeral Homes’ DomianAnderson Chapel, Bertha, MN.

Hudson R. Sobania passed away Wednesday, June 21 at the Children’s Hospital of Minneapolis, MN. A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 1 at 2 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Cemetery in Little Falls, MN with Father Greggory Mastey officiating.

on Wednesday, June 21 to Corey and Katie Sobania.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Corey & Katie Sobania of Bowlus; grandparents, Donald & Paula Waltman of Little Falls, Claude & Linda Sobania of Bowlus; great-grandparents, Phyllis Braith of Little Falls, Jerome & Josie Kalis of Bowlus, Bernice Sobania of Bowlus; aunts & uncles; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Alex Waltman; greatgrandparents, Hubert Braith, John Sobania, Elizabeth Maciej, and Raymond Waltman.

Sister Mary Adella Blonigen Sister Mary Adella Blonigen, 90, died on June 27, 2017, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, Minn.

Hildegard Anna Blonigen was born on August 31, 1926, the fifth of 10 children of Christopher and Anna (Rausch) Blonigen, in Spring, Hill, Minn. She grew up during the difficult days of the Depression. Her father came home from World War I with some physical disabilities. During her childhood, the Blonigen family moved to a farm near St. Martin, Minn. She attended District School # 125 which was within walking distance of their home.

Hildegard learned many of her homemaking skills from her mother who was an avid seamstress, cook and gardener.

Family prayer was an important part of the Blonigen family life.

With three Franciscan aunts, Sisters Hildegard, Crescentia and Alexius, it was not surprising that Hildegard entered St. Francis Convent on January 7, 1948.

She was accepted into the Franciscan Community on August 12, 1948, and received the name Sister Mary Adella.

She made her final vows on August 12, 1953. Sister Mary Adella was a Franciscan Sister for 68 years.

Throughout her life, Sister Mary Adella had varied ministries. In her earlier life as a sister, she was a baker, housekeeper and home visitor. Her time at the bishop’s residence in Duluth held

special memories. It was there that Bishop Anderson taught her how to roast a turkey with dressing for Thanksgiving and roast a lamb for Holy Thursday. The bishop was like a brother to her and to everyone. For almost 25 years, Sister Mary Adella made and cut the hosts which would become the Body of Christ in the Eucharist. Her days in the Altar Bread Room were filled with contemplation as she often prayed for the person who would receive the host.

She loved parish ministry and endeared herself to many people in areas in which she worked.

A favorite hobby and pastime for Sister Mary Adella was the making of thousands of rosaries over a span of more than 50 years. Sister Mary Adella also collected religious articles to send to prisoners. She appreciated the opportunity for daily Mass, Holy Communion, prayers in common with her sisters and living in community. She had a deep faith and love for God and the Blessed Mother. She loved visits with family and friends, particularly with her nephew, Brother Albert Becker, OSC. Sister Mary Adella was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Joseph, Aloysius, Clodoald, Mary Anna, Leo, Agnes and Marcella.

Survivors include her sister Catherine Hommerding and brother Christopher, both of Cold Spring, numerous nieces and nephews and her Franciscan Community.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Convent on July 8, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at St. Francis Convent on July 7, from 4-8 p.m., with a Franciscan prayer service at 7 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral on July 8, at 11 a.m.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ve accepted a promotion that would take me from an hourly wage to a salaried position. Do you have any advice for negotiating a salary?

-J Dear J, The quick and simple answer to this question is you negotiate it based on what you’re worth to the company.

Now, how do you figure that out?

There are a couple of measuring sticks you can use. One is associated with the revenue you bring in, and that’s a nice, concrete reference. Another thing you can do is research some of the more reputable career websites and develop a compensation study based on comparable positions in your area.

If you’re a valuable team member of mine who’s moving from hourly to salary, it wouldn’t be a “negotiation” — it would be a discussion. Honestly, most positions are priced initially at the amount you can be replaced for in the new role. In other words, what’s the going rate for someone in your position?

If it were me, I’d produce two or three well-researched compensation studies. Give them to your bosses, and talk it through with them. Depending on the size of the company, they may not have done that much work figuring it out themselves.

It’s kind of like deciding what to ask for when you sell a car. You try to appraise it for what it’s worth in the marketplace to other people. That’s the way you have a discussion. It’s not that you’re telling them what to do or presenting an ultimatum, you’re asking questions and presenting information.

If you budget a set amount in one category, and you go over that amount, you’ve got to reduce something in another area to stay within your budget for the month.

If something happens on a pretty regular basis, it’s not an emergency, it’s a predictable event. That means you need to budget a larger amount for home improvements or whatever the problem area may be.

On a month-to-month basis, if you have $200 budgeted for household repairs, and any work turns out to be $300, I’d rather you cut back on eating out or another non-essential category to make up the difference.

R Way Pumping reported their shop had been broken into and several items were missing. On June 23, 2017, Deputy Simon met with one of the suspects, Kelly Jo Heitzman, who was subsequently arrested for possession of stolen properShado Don Brynestad ty. She provided information to Deputy Simon that led to the recovery of the stolen Ford F350. Deputy Simon, along with Deputy Joel Schmidt, continued the investigation and were able to obtain information that resulted in the arrest of Shado Don Brynestad for burglary. Both of the parties were booked into the Stearns County Jail. The value of the recovered truck and other property was approximately $14,200.00.

hope in Him that He will shepherd us through dark valleys and sunless days.

In Psalm 85 our author is apparently reflecting on a loss suffered by Israel in a military battle. They looked at their loss as punishment from God. But the Psalmist does not focus on the loss, he focuses on the fact that God has brought them out of captivity in the past and forgave them of their sins. With confidence and boldness he says, “Restore us again, O God, our Savior.”

The message for us to take away from this Psalm is that in times of depression, defeat and darkness we must remember God’s grace in the past and pray in the present for His restoration.

Sometimes when we look at our past and are buried with the guilt of our sins we are fearful of going to God and asking for His grace in these moments.

We feel that we are undeserving and unworthy. We approach His throne of grace in fear and trembling, wondering if we have any right to ask for forgiveness, cleansing and restoration.

But when these thoughts plague us, we must remember that God’s judgment is always tempered by His mercy and He will always forgive us, restore us and revive us again.

Swanville’s summer institution celebrates Grey Eagle United Methodist Church 55 years to hold annual Luncheon

By Steve Richter, Swanville Lions Club Over the decades during which other Central Minnesota festivals have come and gone, the Swanville Mid-Summer Carnival remains the “granddaddy” as it celebrates its 55th year the first weekend after the Fourth of July. This year’s Swanville Lions Club-sponsored event runs from Friday, July 7 through Sunday, July 9.

Returning attractions that have drawn Central Minnesotans for generations include the mouth-watering chicken barbecue, opening at 5 p.m. Friday,

and the midway, which starts at 6 p.m., followed by opening of the air-conditioned Bingo Hall at 7 p.m. All three reopen at 3 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the hour-long parade begins at 11:30 a.m., the midway and chicken barbecue open at noon, and bingo returns at 1 p.m.

Besides ever-popular barbecue and pan-fried chicken, there are plenty of other food choices, including homemade pies, malted milks, hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza. A beer garden will be open as usual and a new offering this year is mixed drinks.

Live music by big-name bands has become one of the bigger draws of the Swanville Carnival. This year starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday are classic rockers The Fabulous Armadillos. Saturday’s live music also begins at 8:30 with Switch, another high-energy band. On Sunday, Alan Godage & The Sundown Band offers classic country for listening and dancing beginning at 1 p.m.

Pre-carnival ride tickets are available at area businesses.

Central MN Violent Offender Task Force Commander Steve Soyka advises that the Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force conducted a search warrant at the address of 22967 350th Street, Albany Township, Stearns County on June 26th, 2017. The residence is owned by a party identified as Jeno Peterson, 48 yo, of Albany. Peterson was not home at the time of the warrant however arrived while investigators were in the process of searching his house.

During the search investigators located a mushroom grow, a marijuana grow containing 48 plants and 3 ½ pounds of methamphetamine. Also located during the search was a .357 handgun and a shotgun along with approximately $11,500.00 in U.S. Currency.

Peterson was arrested and transported to the Stearns County Jail to await court. The firearms and money are subject to forfeiture. No one else is expected to be charged. The task force was assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff Office patrol division.

ids and Little Falls Police Department, along with deputies from the Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, Todd and Morrison County Sheriff Offices.

Bears are here and plentiful

By Rhonda Friese, Conservation Officer, MN DNR Enforcement We live in bear habitat, like it or not.

The bear population has grown and is plentiful throughout Todd, Morrison, and Stearns Counties. Just because you have not seen a bear, does not mean one has not been through your or your neighbor’s yard.

Bears are looking for food. They are omnivorous, which means they eat just about anything. We all need to tidy up our yards and take precautions to keep from attracting them. By doing so, you may deter other unwanted critters, such as raccoons, skunks, opossums, coyotes, etc.

They have a phenomenal sense of smell and will literally follow their nose, right to your bird feeders, garbage cans, compost piles, barbecue grills, and any other mouthwatering smells by a bear’s perspective.

If you absolutely must feed the birds, and I know it brings enjoyment to many, now is the time to be creative in keeping feeders out of the reach of bears yet accessible to you. If you compost, turn your pile regularly and apply lime to keep odors at a minimum. Keep your compost pile away from your active yard area. Do not leave pet food out. Protect gardens and fruiting plants with electric fencing. Store garbage cans and grills inside a building. If your yard is heavily wooded, you may want to clear undergrowth. Bears feel less comfortable in open areas.

If bears find a tasty treat, they will continue to come back until they are no longer rewarded with goodies. In general, after removing the food source, bears should move on within 14 days of no success. You absolutely have a right

to protect yourself. If you need to destroy a bear, you must contact your local Conservation Officer within 48 hours.

Contrary to popular belief, the MN DNR does not relocate problem bears. If a bear is deemed a problem, it will be destroyed.

If a bear comes into your yard, don’t panic or approach it. Most black bears fear people and will leave when they see you. Go inside and let it leave or make loud noises and motions to scare it away.

Always allow it plenty of room to escape.

If a bear gets treed, leave it alone and it will leave when it feels safe. Remove dogs and people from the area.

You Might Like Waze - By John Young If you haven’t heard of Waze, you are not alone! Waze is a mobile device (phone) app you can use for navigation.

It is somewhat similar to Google Maps or Apple Maps. You can enter your destination, and it will give you accurate, step by step instructions on how to proceed to your destination.

Doesn’t sound like anything that is new or exciting yet. But, there are a few significant differences between the traditionally used navigation apps and Waze.

In this article, we will look at a few new aspects of Waze and how they have an unusual business plan!

First, you download the Waze app from your favorite mobile device store (iTunes or Google Play Store). Waze is a free app, and you can use it without creating an account. That is a nice feature so you can try it out before creating an account. You can create an account with your Facebook profile (and it won’t post as you on Facebook), so you could take advantage of some of the neat social sides of Waze.

The social side of a navigation app?

Yes, Waze is different because they are not selling navigation. They are selling community. They are selling you a community (you aren’t paying by the way) of information on travelers who are sharing information on how to make your trip a better experience. Users can log where traffic accidents are slowing traffic, if there are construction zones, or if there are hidden police in the area. All of this information is easy to share by users and shows up on your map as your near those areas in your travel. “There is a car on the side of the road ahead” is a common notification and very helpful when driving at night! Waze is continually updating their maps and system due to user’s input which makes it a much better system for today’s traveler.

With the Waze app, once you have connected via your Facebook profile, you can follow your friends, and you can connect with them and follow their progress as you all go to a specific destination. It would make meeting at a baseball game a bit easier as you see where folks are and when they arrive!

Another user-friendly feature is the audio commands it gives for turns and navigation. All systems have a level of this, but with the Waze system, it will give you additional information on which lane you should be in and which side the exit (for freeway travel) will be on as you near your turn. This is very helpful when driving through unfamiliar metro areas.

All of this is very nice and appeals very well to the younger driver. The average Waze user is under 45 or more advanced in their tech use. The highest percentage of users are under the age of 30

with the 20-25-year-old age range as the highest demographic using Waze.

Now, the business side. These neat applications are great, and this one has a ton of ability to be helpful, but how are they making money?

Waze does this with Waze Local. As a local business, I can buy pins which will show up on users’ maps as they navigate near your location. Driving through a new town and aren’t sure what is in town for food? Well, McDonald’s has purchased pins for all of their stores around the country so that they will show up on your map.

As you can see in our image, Sinclair gas stations have purchased pins so you can find them in towns as you go through) but, as you can see from the map, the actual location might not always be accurate.

Pins start around $2.00 a day for a local business. As a business that would benefit for spur of the moment type stops or is a necessity for travelers, having your pin on Waze might be a great way to reach the under 40 crowd.

Highway 27, Highway 71 project in Long Prairie begins July 10

Motorists in Long Prairie will encounter crews, equipment and narrowed travel lanes on Highway 27 and Highway 71 after a project to improve the roadway, sidewalks and other infrastructure begins Monday, July 10.

Motorists should plan their travel, and expect the following traffic changes.

• Highway 27 and Highway 71 will remain open, but lanes will be narrow and will close intermittently while crews complete their work. Shoulders will also close as needed.

• Access to all local residences and businesses will be maintained.

• Highway 27 and Riverside Drive will be detoured for about five days in late July while crews repair or replace underground utilities near the Highway 27/Highway 71/Riverside Drive intersection. More information on the detour routes will be issued as details become available.

• Highway 27 and Highway 71 will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers allowing one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone for about one week in September.
