Calm your emotions before they get out of control -By Harvey Mackay A young woman was waiting for her flight at a big airport, so she decided to buy a book to read and a packet of cookies to snack on. She sat down in an armchair in a VIP lounge to relax and read in peace.

A man sat down in the next seat, opened his magazine and started reading.

When she took out the first cookie, the man took one also. She felt irritated but said nothing. She just thought, “What nerve! I’d like to punch him for being so rude!”

For each cookie she took, the man also took one. This infuriated her but she didn’t want to cause a scene. When only one cookie remained, she thought to herself,

“What will this rude man do now?”

Then the man, taking the last cookie, divided it into half, giving her one half.

That was too much! She was really angry now. In a huff, she took her book, the rest of her things and stormed off to board the plane. When she sat down in her seat on the plane, she looked into her purse to take out her reading glasses, and to her surprise, her packet of cookies was there, untouched and unopened. She felt so ashamed. She realized that she was wrong.

The man had shared his cookies with her willingly, while she had been very angry, thinking that he was helping himself to her cookies. And now there was no chance to explain herself, nor to apologize.

Have you ever lost your cool and then realized later that you were in the wrong?

I’m sure that most of us have. Let’s save ourselves some embarrassment and make sure that we are in possession of all of the facts before reacting.

Dale Carnegie said: “When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotions.”

Actor Will Smith expanded on that and said: “Human beings are not creatures of logic; we are creatures of emotion. And we do not care what’s true. We care how it feels.”

We all get angry at work sometimes.

If your buttons get pushed, you might need to practice some relaxation techniques, so you don’t lose control. According to the

American Psychological Association, a few simple relaxation tools can help calm angry feelings. They list deep breathing; choosing a calming phrase like “Relax” or “Take it easy” and then repeating it to yourself; visualizing a relaxing experience; and practicing slow, yoga-like exercises to relax your muscles and calm your nerves.

Smart people don’t let their emotions get out of control. Before exploding at work, remember this advice.

• Pay attention to your behavior.

What’s your tone of voice? What is your body language saying to the other person?

Focusing on your reactions and emotions will help you stay calm.

• Watch and listen. What do the other person’s tone and body language tell you? Try to discern whether the other person wants something from you that he or she isn’t asking for. For example, an employee may be afraid to challenge a manager directly. Ask if there’s something more going on.

• Stay positive. With a deep breath or two, try to control the impulse that makes you fight back. Try to find something positive, even just the fact that you’re gaining experience dealing with conflict.

• Focus on the here and now. Don’t bring up problems or disagreements from the past. Stick to the present situation.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Retirement?

When we look back to our younger years, we remember setting aside a few bucks for our old age.

We spent most of our waking hours trying to pay the current expenses and if there were a few bucks left over, that would go into retirement savings.

Retirement always appeared to be a long way off, so we really didn’t worry about it at that time. When retirement time comes, it causes quite a shock.

In some cases failing health forces us into retirement. The old body or mind is simply used up. In other cases some of us retired because of technology. Sometimes retirement at age 65 is mandatory. Every working day for the last 40 plus years increased our ability to know our job simply by acquiring additional practical knowledge applying to our job. We were not as comfortable with new technology, since the last 40 years taught us what method really worked well for us and we were more comfortable doing it “the old way.” We get replaced.

Some individuals retired because of expansion. A farmer makes a good living on 200 acres, but can’t justify the purchase of new, expensive equipment, so is forced to sell to a neighbor who has to buy more land to justify his new machinery. He may stay on the few acres that contain the farm buildings.

Many senior citizens who attempt to stay in their own private dwelling are concerned to find their taxes increase on a double-digit basis each year. They also discover that they are not physically able to do the repair and upkeep to the buildings himself, so he needs to hire someone to do the work, which wasn’t an expense he had included in his budget a few years ago.

A few individuals continue to work during their retirement years. Sometimes it is due to a need to supplement their retirement income. Other times it is their need to continue to contribute their abilities and experience to their community. Still others need to work to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning or do something more satisfying than mowing the yard. Sometimes retirees work just to fight boredom.

Another factor affecting senior retirement is that the years spent as a retired person are becoming longer. Every year there are medical advancements that effect mortality. Some of us remember when TB and Polio were dreaded terminal diseases.

Whooping cough seemed to show up every winter. Almost every kid had Chicken Pox, Measles, Mumps or had their tonsils removed during their younger years. Flu was common virtually every winter. These kid diseases sometimes were terminal.

problems. Stints and by-pass operations are causing many to live extra years. Cancer treatment improves almost every year.

Transportation to medical facilities are improved every year. Medicare assistance with costs involved from seeing the doctor have caused many to get medical help which they may not have sought if they had to pay the bill themselves. We are becoming more aware of the benefits of diet selection and the benefits of smoking cessation. Cars are more protective for the occupants than in early years. All of these things help us to either live or to live longer.

Life expectancy is increasing. If you were born in 1900, your life expectancy would be about 48 years. If you were born in 1930, your life expectancy would be about 60 years. If you were born in 1960, your life expectancy would be about 70 years. If you were born in 1990, your life expectancy would be about 75 years. These figures tell a story, but what we usually aren’t considering is the percentage increase in the years of retirement are doubling. We are living longer, but are we more comfortable and happy in those extended years?

• Ask yourself, “Would I rather be right or happy?” In some cases being right may be more important, such as dealing with safety issues. In other situations, you might be better off letting the other person win. It’s never productive to let stubbornness get in the way of listening to another point of view.

• Take responsibility for communication. You have to clear the air – even if the other person tries to let the problem drop. Insist on an open, honest dialogue that lets everyone express his or her needs and opinions honestly.

15, 1990 in Albany, Minnesota to Teri Evans-Niezgocki and Charles Kunkel. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2008. He enjoyed the outdoors, drawing pictures and had a passion for music.

Survivors include his daughter, Rory Zayden and her mother, Elizabeth Zayden; mother and step-father, Teri EvansNiezgocki and Thomas Niezgocki; father, Chuck Kunkel; brother, Louis Kunkel and his children, Preston, Trevor, and Jayson; sister, Kayla Kunkel; grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Heath was preceded in death by his son, Atticus Zayden in 2009; brother, Jason Kunkel in 2005; and grandparents.

Heath P. Zayden, age 28 of St. Cloud, formerly of Freeport, died Friday, June 29, 2018 at his home in St. Cloud.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, July 6 at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Pastor Daniel Jackson officiating. Entombment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Elizabeth “Betty” Hansen, age 66 of Albany, was held Monday, July 2 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Betty died Thursday at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Betty was born September 12, 1951 in Melrose to Paul and Dorine (Roering) Sand. She has lived her entire life in the Albany area. She married LeRoy Klaphake

with the parade, the food stands, fireworks and concert, was the much anticipated Polka Mass in Sauk River Park. This is the highlight for the mostly German Catholic population of the community. It combined traditional German tunes with the celebration of Mass, the heart of Catholic religious life. For some inexplicable reason, the Polka Mass was canceled. No explanation was given, not even a handwritten sign in the park. If it was a weather issue, everybody would understand, after all we live in Minnesota. Common courtesy would suggest giving some explanation for the cancellation. Apparently, good Catholics are not expected to ask questions: “Obey, keep your mouth shut and your purse open.” I suspect this will be changing very soon.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My husband and I finally have our full emergency fund in place. Like you recommend, we’ve kept it in a money market account with check writing privileges for easy accessibility.

Recently, we heard about shortterm bond funds with a higher interest rate than our current money market account. Our money would be available for withdrawal if needed, and we would only lose the interest. Is it okay to move half of our emergency fund into one of these bond funds to take advantage of the higher interest rate?

Under no circumstances should you do something like that. An emergency fund is not an investment. You’ll never build wealth and get rich off your emergency fund. That’s not what it’s there for.

I understand this might be the first time in your lives you’ve had a nice chunk of cash in the bank. I also get that it’s hard to let it just sit there and make no money.

But an emergency fund is insurance, not an investment. It’s a rainy day fund, and its whole purpose is to sit there safe and wait until life throws unexpected expenses in your face.

Think about it this way. Insurance costs you money to protect things that make you money — like your home. It’s also there to cover things you otherwise would not be able to afford. When you have an emergency fund in place, you don’t have to dip into your 401(k), your IRA, or go into debt. Why? Because your emergency fund provides insurance against those kinds of things.

Let your emergency fund sit right where it is, Ferisa. Besides, it’s a really bad idea to buy bonds in an environment where interest rates are increasing. Bonds have an inverse relationship to interest rates. So, as interest rates climb you’ll lose out if you’re playing around with bonds!

Dear Dave, Our daughter just turned 10 years old.

Is now the right time to start giving her an allowance, and start teaching her about money?

-Danielle Dear Danielle, I’m glad you’re going to teach your daughter about money. But in my mind, there’s never a time for an allowance. I believe that kind of thinking, and using words like “allowance,” are some of the best ways to instill an attitude of entitlement in a child. I don’t think you want your daughter growing up with the idea she deserves money simply because she’s alive.

My advice is to develop a method by which she can earn commissions. Write down a daily or weekly list of jobs around the house that are age-appropriate she will be responsible for doing. Then, at the end of the week, she gets paid for jobs she completed — and she doesn’t get paid for the ones she didn’t do. The idea is to teach her that work creates money, and teach a healthy work ethic at the same time.

Of course, there are some things a child should be expected to do without financial reward. Everyone needs to pitch in, and do certain things to help when they’re part of a family. And once you’ve taught her about the importance and rewards of work, make sure to also teach her about the three uses for money — saving, spending, and giving!

Dear Motor Medics, I just bought a 2010 Ford Explorer and it’s the first 4x4 I’ve owned that has electric shift on the dash instead of the floor. I’m more of a manual shift kind of guy but now that I’m a bit older I’ve traded the full size F350 for something a bit smaller. It was the wife...

She made me do it. My question is how well do the electric shift units work? It just seems like it would be weaker in my opinion and I have yet to be able to get it to shift into 4x4 low range. It didn’t come with a manual but how hard can it be?

Just push the 4x4 button, or am I missing something? Love the Under The Hood show guys!

The electric 4x4 has been around for many years and it’s just the shifting mechanism that’s electric. Kind of like remote control if you want to think of it that way. Just select what you want like on the TV and that’s what you get. To engage the low function, it is a bit more involved. While this one can go into 4x4 high while on the highway the low needs to be parked, in neutral and foot on the brake. If that won’t work it’s off to the repair shop.

there will be a Small Farm Tour in Todd County this summer. The Small Farm Tour is an opportunity for small farm producers to interact and learn from University of Minnesota Extension Educators and from their fellow producers.

This year’s Small Farm Tour will take place on Wednesday, July 18th from 2-5 PM at Kleinschmidt Farms.

Kleinschmidt Farms is owned and operated by Russell and Jess Kleinschmidt, located at 44910 County 21, Staples, MN. A detailed tour and program with extension educators will take place from 2-4 PM, with an open question and answer session from 4-5 pm.

The University of Minnesota Extension Small Farms Program has the goal to help Minnesota’s small farm owners succeed as stewards of the land. The programming efforts are aimed toward Minnesotans owning 1 to 40 acres, agriculture entrepreneurs of all kinds, and Minnesotans new to land ownership.

Attendees will be able to view the Kleinschmidt’s complex and intensive operation, where they look to maximize production on their available land and resources. However, they use holistic methods to ensure that their operation is sustainable. The Kleinschmidt’s utilize methods like intercropping, sequential planting, strip grazing, and a rotating chicken coop to maximize efficiency and utilize resources.

Water-quality testing results for Todd County After two years of water sampling and testing the health of the Mississippi River Brainerd Watershed’s lakes and streams, the results are in, and for an overwhelming majority of Todd County’s waters it’s good news.

Out of the 16 lakes and streams tested in Todd County, 12 met or exceeded the state standards of water quality. That’s 75%, numbers Shannon Wettstein, water planner for Todd County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) wasn’t surprised about.

“Many of the lakes sampled within the watershed are in great shape and these we will continue to work to keep clean,” said Wettstein. “Those which did not meet the state standards were not a huge surprise and we will begin efforts to reduce nutrient contributions to these waters.”

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the local SWCDs have been collecting samples from within the Mississippi River Brainerd Watershed, which covers parts of Crow Wing, Aitkin, Cass, Morrison and Todd counties, including 212 lakes larger than 10 acres, and 2,149 river miles. Elements studied include water clarity, oxygen, nutrient, and bacteria levels in area lakes, streams, and rivers. MPCA crews also sampled fish using electrofishing equipment and collected invertebrate samples.

“By monitoring the state’s major watersheds it helps to prioritize efforts and to bring them back to water-quality goals,” said Bonnie Finnerty, watershed project manager with the MPCA’s Baxter office.

“Having data helps to support the conversations and provides a goal-focused context for people to work together.”

Todd County’s Long Lake Improvement Association for 21 years and its president for 16 years. Long Lake met the state water quality standards.

“We’ve been continually monitoring Long Lake for the last 30 years,” said Krauel. “Since the late 1990s, we’ve performed secchi disk tests for water clarity.

We also test for phosphorus, chlorophyll, and test the lake’s inlets for phosphorus and e-coli.”

Three Todd County lakes did not meet state standards: Trace, Big Swan, and Moose. Wettstein said these waters will be further investigated and a plan will be created to restore water quality. Strategies will also be developed to protect lakes and streams that meet water-quality standards.

An open house regarding state water quality standards in local streams, rivers, and lakes will be offered in the fall in Swanville for Todd and Morrison County residents. Information will be presented by the MPCA and Todd County SWCD and there will be an opportunity for questions.

Minnesota 13 Producer to Speak at Museum Film and television producer Kelly Nathe will present “The Making of Minnesota 13” at the Stearns History Museum’s Breakfast Club on Wednesday, July 11. The program begins at 9 a.m.

Nathe, a segment producer on The Zimmern List and Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations, will share behind-the scene stories from the actual production of the documentary on Central Minnesota’s elite moonshine and the modern-day attempt to resuscitate the brand. She will provide insights about resourceful people of the Prohibition area and the sense of pride their descendants have for their colorful ancestors.

Nathe, whose roots run deep in Stearns County, became interested in its bootlegging history at an early age when she came across a newspaper clipping documenting of her grandfather’s arrest for making illegal whiskey. It planted a seed that eventually germinated when she read “Minnesota 13: Wet Wild Prohibition Days” by longtime St. Cloud State professor Elaine Davis. Nathe and film partner, Norah Shapiro, would then spend two years making the documentary.
