A couple years ago, I wrote two columns on street smarts which really resonated with readers.

They asked for more!

Drawing on what I’ve learned over many decades in business, I just barely scratched the surface. These are little nuggets that you probably won’t learn from a book in school, but they are important for success. Here’s Part III of Harvey’s Street Smarts: First idea – Make gifts memorable.

Use creative gifts to stand out and be remembered. I also appreciate gifts that continue to remind me of that person.

For example, a clock that chimes.

Next idea – Humanize your selling strategy. Learn what people’s hobbies are and find ways to leverage them through tickets, clippings or just current conversation. Learn what turns a person on.

Next idea – You’re not just selling a product. In every sales transaction, position yourself as your customer’s confidant and advisor. More than product, you are selling trust first and foremost.

Next idea – At every meeting with managers, always go around the room and ask managers what can go wrong and prioritize it. If it happens, how are we going to solve it?

Next idea – Hold one-on-one meetings with your employees to learn all about them – what is important to them at work and at home. Employees are people first!

Next idea – You want to make every customer feel like he or she is the only customer you have.

Next idea – Timing is everything.

You never ask your parents for the keys to the car when they are in a bad mood.

Next idea – You can’t successfully negotiate anything until you know the market. You won’t recognize a good deal

unless you’ve done your homework.

Next idea – You always want to sleep on it. Take your time in most decisions and things become much clearer.

Next idea – Never say no for the other person. Ask and let them say no.

Next idea – Short notes yield big results. It takes only a moment. As a matter of personal recognition and courtesy, remember names and take a personal interest in people.

And that can only be accomplished – no matter what you are selling – by a phone call, email, letter or in person, giving that individual instant credibility to make the contact.

Next idea – Outside my office door is a sign – If you know where you can get us some business, come on in. On the table is a sign – Our meeting will not be interrupted unless a customer calls.

Next idea – Every person basically knows about 200 people, so if you have 10 friends, you have 2,000 contacts.

If you are lucky enough to have wellconnected contacts, you could start out with many thousands more. Remember that you are seeking quality and not quantity.

Next idea – Friends of comedian Red Buttons thought he had a phenomenal memory with holiday cards. He filled them out year-round when he met people and mailed them at Christmas time.

Next idea – Never tell a mother her baby is ugly. When someone is close to a project, be very careful what you say.

It may come back to bite you.

Next idea – Every day of your life, many of us have to get up and do a couple things that you don’t want to do.

So you might as well get on them right away in the morning.

Next idea – You can take any amount of pain, as long as you know it will end.

Some days will be bad, but the sun will still rise the next morning.

Next idea – Introduce yourself to every person you sit next to on an airplane or anywhere else. The person on your left or right or in front or back of you can be very important in your life.

Do not judge a book by its cover.

Next idea – Knowledge is power – but not until it is used. Information is only as good as what you can do with it.

Obituaries Steven Donald Schaefer Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Steven Donald Schaefer, age 44 of Albany took place at 11 AM, Monday, July 28th, 2014 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Father Cletus Connors OSB officiated, and burial took place in the parish cemetery following the service. Steve died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family Thursday evening after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. Arrangements were made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany.

Steve was born December 9th, 1969 in Paynesville to Herman and Alice (Hemmesch) Schaefer. He grew up on his family farm near St. Martin and married Karen Wehseler on May 11th, 2002 at Seven Dolors Church in Albany. After marriage, the couple

moved to a home near his family farm outside of St. Martin where together they raised their two boys. Steve most recently worked for Rotochopper in St. Martin as an Electrical Technician.

Throughout his entire life, Steve has had a true love of the outdoors which he showed through his passion for hunting; a tradition he passed on to his sons.

Steve put his family above all else.

Being a dedicated and loving father and a husband meant everything to him. He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, and a retired member of the St. Martin Fire and Rescue Department.

He is survived by his loving wife and sons Karen Schaefer, Jaydon (9), and Devon (8), of St. Martin; his mother Alice Schaefer, St. Martin; and his siblings, Jerry (Deb) Schaefer, St. Martin; Allen (Patty Meyer) Schaefer, St. Martin; Barb (Kerry) Mergen, Farming; Joan (Duane) Schmitt, St. Martin; Donna (John) Hoeper, Alexandria; Dean (Bonnie Holthaus) Schaefer, St. Martin; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father Herman Schaefer and his motherin-law Agnes Wehseler.

T h o m a s Howard Roe, age 69 of Grey Eagle, MN, died on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the St Cloud Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 2nd with visitation 2 hours before the service, at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church with Pastor Gary Taylor officiating.

Inurnment will be at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date. Memorials may be designated to the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church - Building Improvement Fund or the Midwest Outdoors Unlimited (Wounded Veterans Fishing Program).

Tom was born March 15, 1945 in Walker, Minnesota to Howard and Orva (Mills) Roe. He graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1963.

Tom served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service from 1964 to 1969.

In 1969 he married JoEllen Stebbins in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota. They had

two children, Lance Roe and Vincent Roe. In 1987 Tom married Cathy Raffle in Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

Tom worked at Control Data for over 18 years. He later worked for the Minneapolis Public Library and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Tom was an active member of the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church.

He previously served on the church board. He faithfully mowed the church lawn and coordinated snow removal services there. He was on the council of the Village View in Grey Eagle. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and visiting with friends and family.

Survivors include his wife Cathy Roe of St. Paul, children Vincent Roe of Apple Valley, Lance Roe of Grey Eagle, and daughter Robyn Fraenkel of Brooklyn Park, sister Charlotte (Roy) Berg of Aitkin, brother John (Janet) Roe of Grey Eagle, sister Nola Warnert of Grey Eagle, brothers Loren (Susan) Roe of Grey Eagle, Mark (Mary Beth) Roe of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and Alan (Charlotte) Roe of Grey Eagle.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; Howard Roe in 2005 and Orva Roe in 2009.

One of the major problems for members making congressional service a career, is that re-election becomes a top priority, rather than serving the interests of those they are elected to serve.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, W h a t ’ s the difference between a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and Chapter 13 bankruptcy?

-Claudia Dear Claudia, Chapter 7 bankruptcy is what most people think about when they hear the word “bankruptcy.” It’s total bankruptcy, almost like dropping an atomic bomb on your entire financial picture.

Virtually all of your unsecured debt (except student loans, child support and money owed to the IRS) is wiped out.

These things are not bankruptable. About 98 percent of the time, creditors of your other unsecured debt — things like credit cards and alike — get nothing. Items that are secured debt, such as your car or house, are treated a little bit differently.

If you’re behind on payments, you may be allowed to get current. In most cases, banks will allow you to re-sign in a process called reaffirming the debt.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a payment plan structured over five years. In it, you have to pay all of your secured debt. If it has a lien on it, you pay 100 percent to keep the item. You also have to pay a portion of your unsecured debt. Again — like in Chapter 7 — debt to the IRS, child support and student loans don’t go away. For any other unsecured debt, you can pay a percentage of what’s owed. An overall payment plan is developed, and you make those payments for five years.

Dear Dave, Do you think it’s unreasonable to ask my 76-year-old husband to have a will drawn up? He had one made when we lived in Florida, but we moved to Georgia. He won’t do it, because he says wills aren’t recognized in Georgia.

Where did he get his legal advice, in a bar or pool hall?

Okay, let’s straighten this out. The will he had drawn up in Florida wouldn’t be recognized in Georgia, but he could have one made in Georgia that would be absolutely valid and legal. Everyone: No matter where you live, you need a will.

If you die without a will in place, your family has to go through the court and jump through all sorts of hoops to settle the estate. The process can take several months. No one should leave their loved ones in that kind of predicament, when having a will drawn up is such a simple an inexpensive process.

Everyone needs a will, Cam. Human beings have a 100 percent mortality rate, okay? No one is getting out of this thing alive. You need a will, a full estate plan with specific instructions on what to do with all your stuff after you die!

MnDOT’s 511 mobile app receives nearly 1.2 million views in its first year Travelers throughout the state relied on the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 511 traveler information system’s mobile app to the tune of nearly 1.2 million views in the first year.

The free mobile app, launched in July 2013, gives up-to-date information on weather-related road conditions, maintenance and construction projects and crashes. Travelers can also use the www.511mn.org website or call 511 to access the information.

“We’re pleased the mobile app is getting so much use. We were the first state in a 12-state consortium to launch it and we think it’s going to continue to grow,” said Kelly Braunig, 511 coordinator.

She said 118,000 people used the app in its first year to help them plan their routes.

“Whether it is snowing or flooding, people want to know if any closures or bad roads will affect their travels,” she said.

Usage correlates with weather events and construction projects. Braunig said

the peak usage day was Feb. 21, 2014 when 34,000 people used the app. Up to 17 inches of snow fell in some parts of the state that day. On average, more than 2,000 people use the app each day.

A Web page for truckers launched at the same time as the mobile app. Truckers can find information such as weight and width restrictions, and where roundabouts, weigh stations and construction projects are located. Braunig said there were 169,000 hits in the first year. The peak day was also Feb. 21, 2014 with 19,000 hits.

“The Web page is an important resource for truckers. If they get caught in a detour, they’ll lose time delivering their cargo,” she said. The Web page is located at www.511mn.org.

Braunig said future enhancements are planned to the 511 system that will continue to make it a valuable resource for drivers.

Community Builders Spotlight Business

By Carol Duke The Senior Citizens Civic Center of Grey Eagle is located on 114 State Street next door to the library. The center has been active for 39 years in Grey Eagle. Currently the group has 30 members and they are always looking for more to join. The annual dues is only $5.00. The center provides a meeting place for seniors to hold social events.

The Senior Group hosts many functions throughout the year to socialize with others. Currently they have exercise classes three times a week from 9:30 to 10:30 Monday, Wednes-

day and Friday for anyone interested.

Once a month they get together for a potluck Bingo night usually the last week of every month. They also have a dress up Halloween party and a Christmas party.

To raise money for events and running the center they have a Rock a Thon where people rock for hours to raise money or just come to socialize and win prizes and enjoy the company of others.

One of the benefits of the center is the availability for members and the public to use for events. The center can seat 100 people and has a kitchen

New work zone safety laws begin Aug. 1

Motorists who speed through a work zone will be fined $300 beginning Friday, Aug. 1, thanks to a new law passed during the 2014 state legislative session.

“Many work zones are in place across the state, and many workers are in those work zones improving our state’s transportation system,” said Charlie Zelle, Minnesota Department of Transportation commissioner. “This law is important because it provides added protection in areas that can be vulnerable to careless drivers.”

Motorists who do not obey work zone flaggers’ traffic directions also can be charged a $300 fine.

“Safety in the work zone is one of our top priorities,” added Sue Groth, state traffic engineer. “We hope this new increased fine will draw the attention of motorists to slow down when driving past workers.”

To bring additional attention to work zone safety, the Towards Zero Deaths effort, a multi-agency partnership that uses education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response to promote safe and smart driving behavior, launched a statewide “Orange Cones, No Phones” safety campaign earlier this summer.

The Minnesota TZD partners include the departments of Health, Transportation and Public Safety. Since its launch 10 years ago, the TZD effort has helped decrease roadway fatalities by nearly half, from 655 in 2003 to 387 in 2013.

In addition to the new work zone law, other 2014 legislation requires MnDOT to study all two-lane highways during the next five years, and where appropriate, consider raising the speed limit from 55 mph to 60 mph.

“We will only increase the speed limit if it is deemed safe and reasonable,” said Groth. “Two-lane state highways are already the most dangerous roads in the state, and we want to make sure any decision we make considers all factors that affect safety.”

A report of MnDOT’s findings and recommendations is due to the Legislature every January during the five-year review period.

Speed limits that aren’t established through the Minnesota Statute are set by the MnDOT Commissioner based upon an engineering and traffic investigation.

Citizen Soldiers: One Family’s Legacy Join us at the Stearns History Museum at 9:00 am on Wednesday morning, August 13th, for the August Breakfast Club. This will be a special Breakfast Club, outdoors under a tent on the plaza at the Museum. Local historian Bill Morgan will be sharing the military stories of his ancestors through several different wars.

Bill’s presentation traces events surrounding the war experiences of

members of his family who fought in America’s wars - the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. His grandfather was wounded during the Civil War; his great-grandfather died at Bull Run; and a great-uncle helped turn the tide during the third day at Gettysburg. Later stories have to do with a cousin who died on Iwo Jima and the death of his nephew in Vietnam.

One of the major pieces of legislation passed during the last session takes effect on Friday of this week (Aug. 1). On that date, the state’s minimum wage will increase to $8 an hour for what the state considers “large employers,” those with annual gross sales over $500,000. The wage is scheduled to increase again to $8.50 next year and finally to $9.50 on Aug. 1, 2016. The rates for small employers, those with under a half million dollars in annual gross sales, are lower with the numbers being $6.50 this year and moving up to $7.75 in two years.

There is no “tip credit” associated with the bill, and restaurant owners, among others, are concerned they will have to cut staff or raise prices to cover the increased cost. The legislation does contain an “inflation factor,” giving the commissioner of the Department of Labor and Industry the authority to increase the minimum wage by up to 2.5 percent annually, based on what’s known as the Implicit Price Deflator. This inflation factor is problematic for some and was one of

the reasons this bill was stuck in conference committee for nearly a year before finally being passed.

The Legislative Energy Commission was scheduled to meet this week to hear updates on propane supply and delivery in Minnesota. The commission, established back in 2008, is directed to evaluate the energy policies of the state. They will also hear testimony concerning the extension of natural gas pipelines in Minnesota, some of which is already happening in Stearns County.

I’m concerned we could be facing a situation similar to last year, when propane prices rose to high levels and the supply grew short. Our state has lost access to a pipeline that formerly supplied 40 percent of our state’s propane needs.

We were told at a transportation meeting recently that it will take 4,000 railcars to make up for the loss of that pipeline.

Several companies are increasing their storage capacity, and some farmers are also putting in larger tanks for corn drying. However, if the crop comes in wet again this fall and if our winter weather is colder than normal, as it was last year, we could be facing problems again. Contracting is one way to lock in the price of propane, and prices are usually lower in

the summer months than during the main heating season.

The state released numbers last week showing just how many crude oil trains pass through our state. Fifty trains per week, each carrying approximately one million gallons of North Dakota crude, go through Minnesota every week. The highest number is on Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks between Moorhead and the Twin Cities. The Canadian Pacific railroad doesn’t handle the volume of crude that the BN does, and there are fewer oil trains on its tracks.

In a related matter, MnDOT is studying the safety risks at some 500 road crossings in the state that pass over railroad tracks carrying oil trains. They will identify the highest risk intersections and then make improvements at those locations.

How wise of David to want his words and thoughts to be pleasing to God. God wants us to love Him, worship Him, serve Him and please Him. But if we do not know Him we will never be able to honor Him. And we cannot know Him unless we study His Word and allow its message to penetrate our minds.

Then, as we think godly thoughts we will speak godly words and do godly deeds that come from godly hearts and our lives will be pleasing to Him. Whatever is in our heart will eventually come out in our lives!

St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic to offer Family and Friends Support Group for Eating Disorders In the United States, nearly 30 million women and men of all ages, race and backgrounds suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, at some point in their lives. An eating disorder affects the entire family.

To help, the St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic is offering a Family and Friends Support Group for Eating Disorders from 4:30-6 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at CentraCare Health Plaza in the Leonard,

Street & Deinard room.

Upcoming meetings are Aug. 7, Sept. 4 and Oct. 2. Groups are led by a licensed psychologist or registered dietitian and provide support to friends and family through education and sharing with others who also have a loved one with an eating disorder.

Each month a different topic will be explored. Attendees will take away tips for making mealtimes less stressful, how to respond to food and body image struggles and what to say or not

Now is the time to take a hunter safety course With the fall hunting seasons just around the corner, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is urging hunters to sign up now for a hunter education class.

“Though classes are held throughout the year, their numbers peak in the summer and early fall,” said Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR Enforcement Division education program coordinator. “So now is the time to sign up and complete a course, because once the hunting season gets rolling, it might be too late.”

Besides ensuring the ability to hunt this year, taking the class sooner rather than later means more time for scouting hunting locations, sighting-in rifles, practicing shotgun skills and securing permission to hunt on private lands.

Minnesota hunters born after Dec. 31, 1979, must take a DNR hunter education firearms safety training course and receive a certificate of completion before buying a license for big or small game.

Classes are taught by DNR certified volunteers in their local communities. Students, depending on their age, have a few options to become certified.

Regardless of which option they choose the course provides them with basic safe firearms handling skills, wildlife identification, outdoor skills and responsibility that accompanies hunting and firearms use.

Learn deer hunting basics at Aug. 9 clinic People can learn the basics of deer hunting at an event being offered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Saturday, Aug. 9.

In hands-on stations, participants can learn how to track deer, find hunting land, safely place a deer stand, learn to shoot shotguns, rifles and bows, and about deer habits and habitat.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in learning the basics of deer hunting and getting hands-on experience,” said Linda Bylander, coordinator of the DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors Family program.

The event will be noon to 5 p.m. at the Forest Lake Sportsmen’s Club near Forest Lake. Youth ages 10 and older are welcome to attend accompanied by a guardian.
