We Got Fired! … And It’s the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Us -By Harvey Mackay Many people have lost their jobs during this pandemic through no fault of their own.

For my book, “We Got Fired! …

And It’s the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Us,” I interviewed 29 people who landed on their feet and excelled after they were furloughed or given a pink slip. These were high profile people, often fired in a very public arena. To sum up each of their inspirational stories, I asked everyone what advice they would give to people looking for a job today.

Pat Mitchell was the first woman president and CEO of PBS at the time. She had been working as a researcher/writer for Look Magazine when it went out of business.

Her advice was: “Be determined … I was determined not to give up. I figured it would all come around if I could find a way to survive financially while I stayed focused on what I wanted. It didn’t come easily. If you look at my resume, it seems like one exciting jump from one run to the next.

Every one of those moves was somewhat of a risk. Some didn’t work out as I planned or hoped. I didn’t follow a straight line to get where I am, but I never went backward

She added: “Seize every chance you have to learn. It’s amazing how many skills we seem to acquire by accident.”

Bernie Marcus was CEO of the Handy Dan Home Improvement Center chain when the parent company declared bankruptcy.

Marcus was fired by a vindictive board even though the Handy Dan division was not in bankruptcy. “They threw me out of my office and put bars on the door. They searched my files. It was pretty terrible – one of those corporate things. You hear about them, but you don’t really know what they are like until you live through one.”

He was convinced to drop his lawsuit against the company by a mentor who encouraged him to get on with his life.

Another friend advised him to open the store he had always dreamed of. And that’s how The Home Depot was born. He was fired from a top spot in hardware retailing and went on to redefine the hardware industry.

Billie Jean King, winner of 39 women’s tennis grand-slam titles, experienced a series of career setbacks. She said: “Have faith and believe in yourself. It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. This was one of my weaknesses.

I was embarrassed to ask, but I’ve since learned that people want to help. Develop skills and try your best.”

King, who became the first woman in any sport to earn more than $100,000 in a year, added: “Understand delayed gratification. We live in a society of instant rewards. You must learn your craft and earn what you get. It takes a lot of work and sweat, but you have to be willing to pay the price.”

Michael Bloomberg, former New York City Mayor, told me that he first had a vision for his Bloomberg media empire the day he was fired from Salomon Brothers.

He and 62 other partners were summoned to a conference center and told the firm was being merged into another company. You are all fired.

“I started thinking, ‘What are you

gonna do?’ I probably had much too big an ego to go out looking for a job. If another investment house like Goldman Sachs would have called me, I probably would have just taken it, partly to say to Salomon, ‘Stick it … shove it … you guys made a mistake.’ Thank God, I got fired! Even more, thank God, Goldman didn’t call,” he said.

One message from Mayor Bloomberg really stuck out: “People remember two things in life – who helped you on the way up … and who kicked you on the way down ….”

Lest you think these examples don’t relate to your situation, stop and think again. These folks could have wallowed in self-pity, spent fortunes in lawsuits and harbored bitterness that would taint their future job searches.

But they chose a different path. They traded on their strengths, determined to forge ahead. And they didn’t give up.

That’s the most important lesson of all.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Early Day Turkeys (2) The Jacobson Turkey Farm was sometimes known as Maple Grove Turkeys.

The business was successful, which required upgrades to procedures, buildings and machinery.

One of the first upgrades was the incubator barn, which was heated and included a continual operating egg turner during egg incubation. Of course, the egg turner eliminated the need to manually turn the eggs each day. The barn was well insulated, so during the winter the brothers lived in the barn, because it was warmer than their house. One brother slept on a couch and the other two bedded down in the attached room which was the blacksmith shop. Indoor plumbing facilities were lacking, but there was a stove on which to fry hamburgers, which when supplemented by beer created a satisfying menu for the brothers.

A grain processing building was built, which included overhead grain storage, an elevator powered by a Fuller and Johnson 6HP motor and a burr mill to grind the feed. Grain was purchased from various locations in the area and brought to the mill with a 1 ½ ton truck. This truck was also used to move the processed bird barrels to the train or the plant in Melrose, Minn. A butter churn was purchased from the Upsala Creamery to mix feed at the many turkey locations.

In later years a new 1940 International truck was purchased and an attempt was

made to reduce transportation costs by delivering a load of barreled, iced turkeys to Chicago. After one trip it was decided that the train was a better solution.

A processing barn was established with a large hot water tank to scald the turkeys before they were hung on the permanently installed hooks for picking.

One person’s job was to dip the birds in the scalding water, hang them on the picking hooks and transfer the picked birds to the cooling area, prior to packing in ice.

For lighter load pick up and delivery needs, the brothers used a 1928 Buick that had been remodeled into a pickup.

Removing the vehicle trunk area to allow it to carry more product was very common in early years. Part of the reason for making this change was that used cars were available during the 1930’s at prices from $10.00 to $25.00, which was a good buy for the buyer if you had money and it created much needed cash for the economically stressed seller. Sometimes they were remodeled to create a tractor.

Maple Grove Turkeys operated into the 1940’s, when more stringent State and Federal processing rules came into being.

As time passed, one of the brothers died of cancer, another had a stroke and the last brother lived into the 1970’s. The last brother willed the turkey farm to a family with a promise that he would be cared for until his death. One day that brother asked his caretaker to take him to Burtrum, Minn and was told that he wouldn’t be able to go that day. He said that he would then walk there, about 4 miles. He arrived at Burtrum and when he began his return trip he was observed by several people.

However he didn’t finish his return trip.

He simply disappeared somewhere along the trail. Law enforcement, local citizens

Betty J. Towle, age 82, of Burtrum, died peacefully on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

F u n e r a l services were held Tuesday, July 28 at Brighter Days Family Church in Burtrum with Rev. Anna Payne officiating. Interment followed at Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum.

Betty Jane Walker was born August 2, 1937 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Edward and Ann (Olson) Walker. On September 21, 1956, she married Allen Towle in Burtrum.

After their marriage, the couple moved to Coon Lake for five years then Circle Pines and in 1971 they moved to Burtrum. Betty worked as a cook at the Rock Tavern and Golden Eagle Supper Club.

Betty also known to others as “Sweet Pea” was an excellent cook. Some of her favorite pastimes were bowling, playing dice and card games, and spending winters in Louisiana. Betty was known to enjoy a good water fight; bringing the water hose in the house if it meant she would win. She also enjoyed going to the casino to play Blackjack where she could clear a table in no time.

Survivors include her children, Jeannie Unger of Sauk Centre, Dale (Judy) Towle of Clear Lake, Judy (Mike) Meagher of Burtrum, Hoppe (Sheila) Towle of Grey Eagle, and Pat Towle and Mona Towle of Marksville, Louisiana; 12 grandchildren and

18 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Robert (Pearl) Walker, Patricia Srnsky, Inez Karnes, and Ed Walker Jr. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Allen “Ugly” Towle on June 26, 2011; parents, Edward and Ann Walker; son, Terry Towle; son-in-law, Kevin Unger; grandsons, Craig Rohde and Travis Towle; sister, Anna Mae Polley; brothers-in-law, Jim Srnsky, Clyde Karnes, and Vince Polley; and sister-in-law, LouAnn Walker.

Serving as casket bearers were Scott Rohde, Brian Towle, Ryan Knutson, Chris Towle, Eric Towle, and Steve Bjerk.

Honorary bearers were the grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Meagher, Dawn Becker, Candice Rohde, Jannice Rawlins, Bethany Towle, Tiffany Towle, Casey Towle, and Mike “Bucky” Meagher.

Dorothy M. Strassburg

Dorothy M. Strassburg, 85 year old resident of Burtrum, MN, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Faith Community Church in Burtrum, MN, with Pastor Terry Wardlaw officiating. Burial was at Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum.

Dorothy Strassburg was born September 3, 1934 in Burnhamville Township to Glenn and Evelyn (Hardy) Wildman. She attended Burtrum/Grey Eagle School where she graduated in 1952. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Strassburg on December 29, 1952 in Todd County and they had five children. She worked at Larson Boat Works in Little Falls, MN for several years. Dorothy lead an active life. She helped with the annual Burtrum Bean Bake. She was active in the Todd County 4-H program for 50 years and was the Burtrum City Clerk for 36 years. Lloyd and Dorothy received the Helen Keller Sight Award from the Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions Club. Dorothy enjoyed many activities such as camping, fishing, hunting, embroidering, quilting, playing cards and spending time with family and grandkids.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Lloyd of 67 years; children, Raymond (Margie) Strassburg of Staples, MN, Debbie Strassburg (daughter-in-law) of Burtrum, MN, Deb (Barney) VanHavermaet of Burtrum, MN, Randy (Bonita) Strassburg of Bowlus, MN and Ron Strassburg of Burtrum, MN; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Evelyn; brother, Jim; son, Richard and two grandchildren, Alex and Kimberly.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Mettler, Nicholas Mettler, Victoria Bulcher, Jamie Kluemtke, Dylan Hollermann, and Mason Hollermann (past 4-H members).

Bernice Agnes (Schmeising) Peterson, age 85 of Princeton, MN died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.

B e r n i c e Schmiesing was born February 23, 1934 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Ben and Augusta (Niehoff) Schmiesing. On November 26, 1953 she married Lloyd (Pete) Peterson at Meire Grove, MN. The couple resided in Coon Rapids, MN until retiring to Backus, MN, until Pete passed away in 1995.

Survivors include her children and grandchildren, Daniel (Wendy) Peterson of Glenwood, MN (Elisabeth (Adam) Roesch, Emily (Sam) Sidhom and Abby (Don) Simon; Roxane (Jack) Holder of Princeton, MN (Alicia Holder); children of her son Jeffrey Peterson (Corey and Jesse Peterson) ; six great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Adeline (Roy) Middendorf of Sauk Centre, Helen Miller of Sauk Centre, Eleanore Muellner of Cologne, Catherine Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, Isadore (Jan) Schmiesing of Swanville, and Joseph (Cynthia) Schmiesing of Sauk Centre.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, July 24, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN for Elaine Sutton, age 83 of Swanville who died Monday, July 20, 2020 at the Long Prairie Nursing Home.

Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiated and interment was at the Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury.

Elaine Smith was born on June 27, 1937 in Minneapolis, MN to Leslie and Dorothy (Turner) Smith. She was raised and educated in Swanville. On May 15, 1957 she married Leo Sutton in Waterloo, IA. The couple moved to Bruce Township with their four children in 1968. The couple had purchased a farm and had a 5th child. Elaine was a homemaker for most of her life and enjoyed raising hogs and growing large gardens. She also liked playing cards and visiting neighbors. Bowling and trips to the casino were highlights for her. She took many trips to visit her friends in Iowa.

Most of all, Elaine loved being a grandma and made grandkids her number one priority.

Elaine is survived by her sons, Dan (Pam) of Long Prairie, Bobby (Lori) of Upsala and Loren of Swanville; daughters, Cindy (Ira) Lyon of Grey Eagle and Jolene Sutton of Little Falls; sisters, Dorothy (Ronald) Baum of Pillsbury and Leslie Smith of Long Prairie; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents; sisters, Yvonne Koester and Joyce Fritz; granddaughter, Jackie Lyon and grandson, Gavin Sutton.

Arrangements were with Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel, Long Prairie.

Everett E. Sweazey

Everett E. Sweazey, age 73 of Bertha, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena, Minnesota.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Everett Ernest Sweazey, Jr. was born July 31, 1946 in Bloomington, Minnesota to Everett, Sr. and Doloris (Nazer) Sweazey. After high school, Everett enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1973. He furthered his education to become a machinist and was employed at Bystrom Brothers for over 40 years. He was united in marriage to Jerilynn Feela on May 1, 1999 in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Everett was an active former member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Bloomington and attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. In his younger years, Everett enjoyed flying and racing gas powered vehicles. Later in life, he enjoyed camping, helping people, especially volunteering at Ruby’s Pantry in Sauk Centre, and liked to share his life experiences with everyone.

Survivors include his children, Wanda Sweazey, Darren Sweazey, Terry Sweazey, Joey Sweazey, Mindy (Adam) Boelter, Anthony (Lindsey) Toenyan, and Tanya (Alex) Juergensen; 18 grandchildren; and sisters, Sherry (Rick) Lokken and Sandra Foss.

Everett was preceded in death by his wife, Jerilynn Sweazey on July 27, 2019; parents, Everett, Sr. and Doloris; brother, Wayne Foss; daughter, Misty Sweazey; and former wife, Sheila Sweazey.

Adrian R. Sowada, 84 year old resident of Little Falls, MN passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at Chateau Waters Assisted Living in Sartell, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, July 24, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with Father Ben Kociemba officiating. Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Adrian had a long and distinguished career in the teaching field, that extended over 37 years. Beginning with eight years at country school, District Number 25 (1191), then as a teacher and principal in Rice, Minnesota. Adrian rounded out his life long career with 28 years at Lincoln Elementary School in Little Falls, Minnesota. Adrian had many passions that included spending time with his grandchildren, working with his local township, hunting, fishing, woodworking, playing cards, etc. But none were as deeply and widely rooted, as his love for music! Adrian began playing music early in life. His passion started while yet in high school, playing in a polka band. This love continued on for over 60+ years; playing with the likes of: Dave Willie Orchestra, The Polka Beats, Country Polkateers, Deutschmeisters, LaVerne and the Starlites, and many more. Adrian touched many people in his almost 85 years of life. His infectious laugh; his ability and skill to tell a great joke and his practical joking nature, will be greatly missed by all.

Judy Lynn Meagher

Judy Lynn Meagher, age 60, passed away peacefully at home on July 27th, 2020 surrounded by loved ones.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 1 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Michael Bitz officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. A celebration of life will continue at the Hub Supper Club in Burtrum.

Judy Lynn Towle was born on April 17th, 1960 in Minneapolis, MN to Allen and Betty (Walker) Towle. She married Mike Meagher on July 9th, 1977. They moved to Luverne in 1985 and Judy started her own cake decorating business and then went on to manage the bakery at Glen’s Food Center. From there she worked as a pharmacist technician at Souix Valley Hospital. She and Mike also owned a couple businesses, Blue Sky’s Aviation and Scotty’s Bar and Grill. They moved back up to Burtrum in 1999 and she worked for the United States Postal Service in Paynesville and then was awarded Postmaster in Grey Eagle in 2010.

Judy loved spending time with family and friends. She expecially liked spending time with her grandchildren and feeding them popcorn and chocolate. She loved the outdoors, camping, and music. She loved dancing, usually barefoot. She and Mike loved to travel and riding motorcycle.

Survivors include her children, Bobbi Jo Meagher-Bjerk (Steve) of Osakis, Dawn Becker (Glendon) of Grey Eagle, and Mike “Buck-e” Meagher (Melissa) of Long Prairie, 10 grandkids and 1 great grandchild; brothers and sisters: Jeannie Unger (Kevin) of Sauk Centre, Dale Towle (Judy) of Clear Lake, Hoppe Towle (Sheila) of Grey Eagle, and Pat Towle and Mona Towle of Marksville, Louisiana.

Richard P. Pike

Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Richard P. Pike, age 94 of Avon, who passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Richard was born on June 5, 1926 to Sidney and Mabel (Keifer) Pike in St. Charles, MN. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WWII. Richard married Jean Olson on June 17, 1950 in Oaklawn, IL. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon, St. Joseph American Legion Post 328, and Knights of Columbus.

He was the president of Wells Fargo Bank in Hastings, MN until he retired in 1987.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jean of Avon; children, Brad (Kathleen) Pike of Maple Grove, Nancy (Jeffrey) Hofmann of Otsego, James (Christine) Pike of Somerset, WI, and Jane Pike (Steve Borndale) of Hastings; and 6 grandchildren.

Vehicle Crash: July 22, 2020: At 6:18 p.m. deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of County Road 2 and Interstate 94 in St. Joseph Township.

Lynda Hartwig, 52 of Albany, was driving a 2019 Ford Edge northbound on County Road 2. She stopped at the intersection to turn westbound onto the I-94 on ramp.

While stopped yielding to traffic, Hartwig was rear-ended by Steven Williams, 27 of St. Joseph, who was driving a 1998 Subaru Impreza.

Ms. Hartwig and Mr. Williams both sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment. Both vehicles were totaled. The St. Joseph Police Department assisted.

Burglary: July 23, 2020:: At approximately 11:42 am, their office received a report from a resident in Swan River Township, south of Little Falls, that they had just interrupted a burglary in progress. The resident drove by his property and noticed an unfamiliar vehicle parked there. The resident contacted the sheriff’s office and deputies responded. Deputies made contact with 34-year-old Cory Sund of Avon, 33-year-old Christopher Dempsey of St. Cloud, and 47-year-old Michael Spry of St. Cloud.

Through the course of the investigation, deputies learned that items were removed from one of the buildings on the property and located in the suspect vehicle. Deputies arrested the three adult males and transported them to the Morrison County Jail where they are awaiting formal charges.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Royalton Police Department.

Calvin Coplan, 18, of Holdingford, was driving a 2011 gray Dodge Charger westbound on County Road 75 west of County Road 2. Mr. Coplan reportedly drove over the fog line and corrected the vehicle back into its lane, crossed the center line and quickly moved the vehicle back into its lane and over the fog line again. He continued westbound and approached the intersection of County Road 75 and County Road 3.

At the intersection, the traffic light was red for westbound traffic. Two other vehicles were crossing the intersection. One vehicle stopped before entering the intersection. A tan 2012 Chrysler Town & Country, driven

by Richard Blonigen, 34, of Holdingford, was struck in the driver’s door by Mr. Coplan’s vehicle. The impact sent Mr. Blonigen’s vehicle into the northwest ditch of County Road 75. Mr. Coplan’s vehicle sustained front-end damage and came to rest in the center median.

Mr. Coplan was wearing his seat belt and was treated at the scene for his injuries. He stated he was tired and believed he fell asleep as he did not recall entering the intersection.

Mr. Blonigen, his wife, and two children, ages 2 and 1 month, were transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries. Mr. and Mrs. Blonigen were wearing their seat belts and the children were properly restrained in child restraint systems. St. Joseph Police Department and St. Joseph Fire & Rescue assisted.

-Greg Dear Greg, Basically, this kind of cosmetic surgery isn’t an emergency. It’s a desire. It can, in many cases, be a valid and reasonable desire. But if you guys are serious about getting out of debt and gaining control of your finances, I’d advise waiting until after Baby Step 3 to make this happen. At that point, you’ll have paid off all your debt— except for your home—and you’ll have a fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in the bank.

Going on vacation isn’t a need, it’s a want. Buying a new couch isn’t a need, it’s a want. I know you love your wife, and you want her to be happy and feel good about herself. But right now, this is a want. If it

were a medical procedure required to save her life, it would be an emergency—a need.

In a case like that, you’d stop what you’re doing right now and address the issue.

This may be something you both agree is a valid expense. If it’s something you’ve talked through together, and something you both want, that’s fine. It’s a reasonable goal under the circumstances. But I would wait until after you’re out of debt and you have your emergency fund in place. Being out of debt will make it so much easier to save up and take care of any out-of-pocket expenses you might have to pay.

All in all, it’s money well spent to help your wife look and feel like herself again.

Just do it at the proper time where your finances are concerned!

Dear Motor Medics, I drive a 2013 Town and Country Van and I am having problems with my headlights on one side, I have no high beam and I also have a right rear turn signal that won’t work. The van has been into two different shops because I was so shocked by the cost of repair that I wanted a second opinion. I thought you could just replace bulbs, but they tell me it is a front control module FICM whatever that means. They also tell me that it would be a dealer only fix. I about died when I called the dealer and asked the price. Is there another solution for this problem?

These modules also run things like interior lamps and the horn and fans and more.

They can be sensitive to things like low batteries or jump starting and we have seen many fail. The module is not repairable and must be replaced. They do tend to get expensive, but you do need lights to drive safely. When they say you must see the dealership for repair it is because the module is one time program only in many of these and sometimes a general repair shop does not have the programming tools to do the job but many do. Shop around for one that does for the best price on repair.

It started out just being a slight wobble but now I can move it up and down and side to side almost an inch. It has become so bad that while I was driving down the road yesterday the truck died because the ignition shut off. The key will actually turn backward when I lift the wheel up. The issue with the loose parts comes from hanging on the wheel either while driving or when getting into and out of the vehicle. It is more common in trucks because they tend to sit higher, and you need a boost to get into them. You can replace the entire unit with a certified used part, or you can have a repair shop tear it down and secure the loose parts. It requires an extensive teardown and a couple hours to do the job correctly. If you wait too long you could lose your steering and crash, or the ignition parts may break and cause the repair costs to greatly increase. We suggest that with it as lose as you describe that you do not drive the vehicle until proper repairs have been made.
