Don’t worry about it! -By Harvey Mackay

I recently received a cartoon from a friend that showed a psychiatrist having a session with her patient.

She says, “You worry too much … It doesn’t do any good…”

And the patient answers, “It does for me … 95% of the things I worry about never happen!”

Several years ago I saw a survey that says 40 percent of the things we worry about never happen, 30 percent are in the past and can’t be helped, 12 percent concern the affairs of others that aren’t our business, 10 percent are about sickness – either real or imagined – and 8 percent are worth worrying about. I would submit that even the 8 percent aren’t really worth the energy of worry.

I wrote a column about the Second Ten Commandments in 2009 and guess what was number one: “Thou shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.” You can’t saw sawdust. A day of worry is more exhausting than a day of work. People get so busy worrying about yesterday or tomorrow, they forget about today. And

Robert Leahy, author of The Worry Cure, says people worry for a variety of reasons, but one big reason is that worriers are intolerant of uncertainty.

Leahy says worriers believe that they are being responsible by worrying because they believe they are preparing to avoid something bad. They think that by worrying they are taking control of their lives. But in fact, the reverse is true. Too much worrying causes people to lose control, and only builds their anxiety.

Worriers believe that they need to know what the outcome will be – or there could be some kind of catastrophe awaiting them. Leahy says that worriers almost always overestimate the negative outcome.

At the same time, they underestimate their ability to handle what does happen.

He further reminds us that worriers often forget that their worries in the past have mostly turned out to be futile.

I can attest to that finding. Instead of worrying about bad outcomes, I have adopted a different strategy. When I am faced with a big business decision or challenge, I ask my team to think about two things: What are we trying to accomplish, and what is the worst thing that can happen? We plan for the best, but we also prepare for the worst.

That way, we avoid most surprises by anticipating disappointment.

some advice from folks who have been around long enough to have mountains of problems to worry about – and yet, their longevity is credited largely to the right attitude.

Researchers at the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine questioned 243 people age 100 and older. They found that centenarians tend to share certain personality traits, in addition to other factors, like genetics.

In general, those traits included: • Outgoing • Positive-minded about other • Full of laughter • Open with their emotions • Conscientious and disciplined • Unlikely to obsess about anxieties or guilt The scientists did point out that these characteristics don’t necessarily represent the reason for the long life spans. But they did notice that in many cases the personality traits they observed weren’t necessarily lifelong tendencies, but behaviors their subjects learned as they grew older.

Obituaries Lorraine C. Uphoff

Lorraine C. Uphoff, age 85 of Melrose, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 2 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment followed in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Lorraine Catherine Ahrens was born July 22, 1928 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Elizabeth (Hallermann) Ahrens. She married Raymond A. Uphoff on September 12, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Together Raymond and Lorraine farmed near New Munich. In 1995, Lorraine moved to Melrose. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, baking, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Uphoff on August 22, 1991; brothers, Norbert and Ralph Ahrens; sister, Marcella “Sally” Meyer; and brother-in-law, Jerome Meyer.

Serving as casket bearers were Kevin Uphoff, Tina Uphoff, Brian Schneider, Scott Schneider, Eric Lieser, Morgan Uphoff. Cross bearer was Megan Uphoff and scripture bearer was Brianna Lieser.

Gift bearers were Sara Schneider, Jason Uphoff, and Mitchell Uphoff. Readers were Lori Uphoff and Henry Ahrens.

Eucharistic Ministers were Allen Lieser and Morgan Uphoff.

23, 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 179th Field Artillery Battalion as a heavy machine gunner (50 caliber). His unit landed in France early in August 1944 as part of General George Pattons 3rd Army, fighting in France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia to the end of the war in Europe. After the war he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 40 years, starting as a telegrapher but held many other positions.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Gene Knapp and Howard Knapp; and sister, Kathryn Stevens.

Melvin N. “Bud” Eveslage, age 74 of Melrose, formerly of Cannon Falls, died Monday, June 30, 2014 due to complications of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A celebration of Bud’s life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating.

Interment will be in the parish mausoleum.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Melvin Norbert Eveslage was born on September 10, 1939 in Freeport, Minnesota to Ferdinand and Loretta (Storkamp) Eveslage.

He married Carol Ann (Barry) of Albert Lea and they later divorced. Bud moved away from Freeport shortly after high school to work at his uncle’s farm in Rosemount. After his marriage, they settled on a small hobby farm in Cannon Falls, where he lived and worked for most of his life.

While there, Bud began his lifetime career in construction, eventually joining Opus Corporation as a bricklayer in 1979, working there for 22 years until retiring in

2001. Opus has a strong connection to the University of St. Thomas, and Bud was proud to have been a member of the crew that built many of the buildings on the St. Thomas campus.

When Bud wasn’t working, you could find him with a fishing pole, a golf club or a guitar in his hands. But what brought him the most joy during his retirement was his ability to reconnect with farming, spending many a happy day driving tractor and helping Pam and Steve Herdering on the family farm. His tractor, the “Little Angel,” is still at the farm and will carry on Bud’s legacy there for years to come.

Bud is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Jeff) Nystuen of Ham Lake; two grandchildren, Nate and Ian Nystuen; five brothers and sisters, Leo Eveslage of Melrose, Carol (Tony) Niehaus of Melrose, John (Joyce) Eveslage of Freeport, and Mary Eveslage and Kathy Eveslage of Marshall.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Tina Eveslage; and sisters, Bernie Koetter and Elaine Hinnenkamp.

Cross bearer will be Ian Nystuen, with Grace Herdering serving as scripture bearer.

Urn bearer will be Nate Nystuen and honorary bearers will be Leo Eveslage, John Eveslage, Steve Herdering, Matt Herdering, Luke Herdering, Mike Eveslage, Steve Eveslage and Brad Duellman.

U of M Extension Offers Food Manager Certification & Renewal Courses in St. Cloud University of Minnesota Extension is offering two courses to help food service establishments meet the educational requirements for Certified Food Managers.

The initial certification course, using the ServSafe® curriculum, will be offered on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Midtown Office Complex in St. Cloud. The class will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with the exam following at 4:30 p.m. Participants must attend all day to be eligible to take the certification exam. This course includes information about safe food preparation, handling, sanitation and prevention of foodborne illnesses. Registration is due by July 8.

Certification renewal for food managers will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. It will be held at

the Midtown Office Complex in St. Cloud.

Certified Food Managers need four hours of continuing education credits within three years of becoming certified. University of Minnesota Extension educators and University specialists developed the four-hour Serve It Up Safely ™ renewal course that meets these criteria. Registration is due by July 10.

Extension offers Food Safety Employee Training class in St. Cloud

The University of Minnesota Extension is offering a 2-hour course for food service employees that covers the basic requirements for safe food handling. The class is designed for employees who are not certified food managers. A single outbreak of food borne illness can easily cost a food service operation $75,000. Food Safety Employee Training is one way food facilities can pro actively work towards preventing such losses.

Your housing payment should not exceed 25 percent of your monthly takehome pay on a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage.

When it comes to buying a house, the goal is not to live in the Taj Mahal or have something so expensive you end up being “house poor.” When buying a home, especially for first-time homebuyers, you should look for something nice — in a decent area — that you can get paid off as quickly as possible.

It’s really not a big deal if you cheat a couple of percentage points one way or the other. But 25 percent is a good rule of thumb to ensure you’ll still have money left over to live on, save and invest!

The cash value is $2,500, and my husband and I want to cash it out and put the money toward paying off debt. We already have larger term life insurance policies in place, but I’m worried that doing this will offend my parents. What should I do?

-Laura Dear Laura, I think the real question is how many toxic things will you do because you’re afraid you might offend them. Whole life policies are financially toxic. They’re a bad product, and keeping it for no better reason than it might hurt their feelings a little bit isn’t much of a reason — especially when

the alternative is paying down debt and getting your financial life in order.

I know this is mom and dad we’re talking about, so you’ll have to be nice about everything. But at the same time, your parents have to realize it’s your life and you make the decisions. Try sitting down with them and gently explaining that while you appreciate and love them for their generosity, you’re going to cash it out and use it to get out of debt. Let them know you’re not wasting their gift, and that you’re using it to make a positive impact on your lives.

You’re not doing anything disrespectful, Laura. Just be very clear about the reason and loving with your explanation. Then, if they choose to become a little emotional or resentful, that’s on them. If they get really upset and want the money back, you can do that too. But getting your financial house in order is much more important than hanging on to a bad financial product you don’t need in the first place.

Best wishes for the Fourth; update on alternative fuels

The biggest holiday of the summer season is upon us as we celebrate the Fourth of July this week. Traditionally, this marks the mid-point of summer, and it’s a time when families gather at the lake for cook-outs, campfires, and fishing. May you have a fun-filled and safe holiday, and when you’re admiring the fireworks display wherever you may be, take a minute to appreciate this great country of ours and how blessed we are to be living here.

Many will also be traveling during the coming days. And, as usually happens during major holiday periods, the price of gas seems to be creeping up. Ran across this report from the Minnesota Dept. of Commerce concerning our state’s use of E-85, the mixture of up to 85 percent ethanol and regular unleaded gasoline. During the first three months of the year, sales of E-85 were 3.77 million gallons, which represents a huge increase of 49 percent from one year earlier. On average statewide, it’s been priced around 65 cents less per gallon than regular gas, with some stations running promotions that have it priced at one dollar below regular. Usage figures for the second quarter of the year are due to be released in early July.

Market acceptance of another mixture of gas and ethanol, known as E-15, has not caught on as fast as some had hoped. Even though it’s been cleared by the EPA to run in vehicles newer than 2001, E-15 is available at only seven locations in Minnesota.

A joint promotion by the Minnesota Corn Growers and the Dept. of Agriculture has funding available for stations looking to offer the higher blend. Several other service station locations have “blender pumps,” which offer consumers the choice of ethanol blends ranging from E-10 all the way up to E-85.

I attended a meeting last week put on by the Soybean Growers as they focus attention on Minnesota’s move to a B-10 level of bio in diesel fuel sold in Minnesota beginning on July 1. The increase from the current 5 percent was included in legislation passed years ago that allowed for such an increase when market conditions in the state would allow it. Those conditions were met last year, and the Dept. of Agriculture announced at that time the increase would take place. This increase in bio pertains only to number 2 diesel fuel and will remain in effect during the months of April through September only. During our cold weather months, the requirement goes back to 5 percent.

This area seemed to miss the heavy rain forecast for this past weekend. We were in Melrose for their River Fest celebration Saturday and there was light rain during the parade, but the weather cleared off nicely during the afternoon. Sunday was also dry with plenty of sunshine and wind, just what we need to start drying out our saturated soils. We took in the Vikingland Band Festival in Alexandria and saw some outstanding units putting on their routines.

The Albany band was there, along with other area units from Benson, Fergus Falls, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, and BerthaHewitt, along with the host school. In all, 22 bands took part in the competition, with one of them, KMS, going for its sixth straight first place finish in the smaller-school category.

Our God is a great and gracious God. We see His greatness when we look into the spacious skies at night and see stars that cannot be counted and know that there are galaxies beyond galaxies. We see His greatness when His Son walked among the sick and healed them, the hungry and fed them, the grieving and comforted them, the distraught and encouraged them.

We see His grace when we look at Jesus on the cross, His resurrection from the tomb when He defeated death, His offer of salvation, His promise of eternal life with Him and His invitation to call on Him “whenever” for “whatever” as long as it is in His name.

David said that God “rescued him because He delighted in him.” Delighted here means “to be mindful of, to be attentive to, to keep, to protect, to have pleasure in...”

Imagine the great value that God placed on David. He had a special place in God’s heart and was delivered from God’s wrath and his enemies.

In Christ we have the same deliverance. He takes God’s wrath from us in the salvation He provides for us and He also rescues us from the power of Satan who would defeat us. He is with us now just as He was with David three thousand years ago.

Christ living in us gives us His presence and power. When we call upon Him and trust in Him, we can be assured that He “is attentive to us, will keep us, protect us and take great pleasure in us” because He delights in us just as He did David.

She is kind to those around her and she encourages others to be kind and truthful as well. Breanna can often be found working with other students in the classroom. She helps both students and staff. Breanna knows right from wrong and teaches others to be truthful and honest as well.

Breanna is a role model for other students and her teacher loved having her in her class this year.

He always gives you his best, whether it is work ethic or attitude. His smile and good attitude are contagious, and he is well liked by all of his classmates. This student has made a lot of progress this year, and his teacher is so proud of him. He will be missed next year in fourth grade, but will be a great student in fifth grade. She takes a lot of pride in her work and shows great leadership in and out of the classroom. She is a very mild mannered young girl and very sensitive to her peers. (DZ) 5th Grade: Hannah Butler is the 5th Grade SOTM winner for May. It is a pleasure to nominate this student for our final student of the month. She has demonstrated good character traits throughout the entire year and should be commended for her honest and caring demeanor.

Besides being cooperative and respectful to all, she is someone who can be counted on to do what she is supposed to and always follows the rules. She has a positive attitude and a good work ethic.

Her teachers are all very proud of the hard work she has done this year. It has been so much fun having her in class. (MW) Amber Miller is the 5th Grade SOTM winner for May. This young girl is very deserving of student of the month. She is on time to class, ready to work, and always gives her best. Her teachers and classmates appreciate how trustworthy and honest she is. Her teachers know that she is someone that will always try to do the right thing. Her classmates describe her as funny, kind, smart, caring, and a good friend.

Color My Gem 5K Run/Walk during GEM Fest

The Upsala Area School Spanish class decided to try something new to raise money for their Galapagos Island Spanish trip this next school year: A 5k run/walk.

This event is all about a colorful morning with friends and family. You can run, walk, or do somersaults if you wish!

The Color My GEM Run/Walk is a fivekilometer, un-timed race in which walkers/runners are colored with powder at each kilometer.

There are only three rules: 1. Wear white at the starting line; 2. Finish plastered in color; 3.

Have fun!!!

Cheering, dancing, and music will greet the colorful walkers/runners at the finish line.

Every 15 minutes will have a color throw for finishers crossing the line. The colored powder is 100% biodegradable and safe for the environment.

The event will be held on July 19, 2014 at Grey Eagle, MN and is part of the GEM Fest activities. The race will start at 8 AM. Packet pick-up will start at 7 AM on the GEM Fest grounds. Sign up and Register at www.zape-

A: A readily accessible U.S. Coast Guardapproved life jacket is required for each person on all boats including canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. A Type IV throwable device is also required on boats more than 16 feet.

Children under 10 years old must wear a life jacket while a boat is underway unless the child is in an enclosed cabin, aboard a passenger vessel operated by a licensed captain, or on a boat that is anchored for the purpose of swimming or diving. The life jacket also must be the appropriate size for the wearer.
