Kids’ sports hold lessons for business -By Harvey Mackay Watching a kids’ ball game can provide a mini life lesson for observers.

The takeaway also applies to business.

Astute observers can learn a lot by watching kids play.

My Chief of Staff Greg Bailey told me about his g r a n d d a u g h t e r ’s machine-pitch softball team for seven- and eightyear-olds. He cheered them on for two months, ignoring the fact that they weren’t very good.

They didn’t even score a run until the final two weeks of the season.

Then came the state tournament, where they won their first game – by forfeit – when the other team didn’t show up for an early morning game. They took full advantage of the extra practice time, with a six-on-six scrimmage.

They lost their next game by a single run which sent them to the consolation round of the tournament. The next day, they shocked everyone and won 6-0. In the consolation championship game, they were behind 4-1 and somehow came back to win 5-4. Truly unbelievable!

This team that struggled mightily all season had won three out of four games in a state tournament – their only victories all summer. Or were they?

I’m sure there are many scenarios like this around the country, but I want to focus on attributes that this team showed that can apply to all of us. Their victories went far beyond their exploits on the ballfield.

Most important is that they maintained a positive attitude all season long, despite repeated losses. I would submit that these little players held on to every hope and kept trying, even when their prospects looked mighty dismal.

They got better as the season went on.

Their progress was slow sometimes, but with

encouragement from very patient coaches and fans, these kids worked hard toward improving their softball skills and teamwork.

All these girls loved each other and the game. They never lost interest. They loved what they were doing, and they kept showing up with enthusiasm, ready to play and maybe even win!

Finally, they always had fun. They cheered each other on and chanted in the dugout regardless of the score. Every inning was an opportunity. Every girl was an important part of the team. Most barely knew each other at the start of the season, but they ended as great buddies.

They had come together as a team, largely due to the efforts of management (aka coaches), and the story had a happy ending.

Granted, business tends to be a little more complicated than kids’ games. But have you ever heard of a business that was successful while projecting a negative attitude? Businesses would be wise to follow the example of this young team. I know of few organizations that haven’t suffered through slow periods or outright slumps. When you have nowhere to go but up, find a way to dig yourself out of that hole. Positive thinking, when combined with realistic goals, can change outcomes.

Maintaining a positive attitude when things are gliding along is naturally easier, but I would caution against getting so comfortable with success that you let your guard down.

Teams that get used to winning and suddenly suffer a couple losses know that passing up a practice or taking their games less seriously might have contributed to their reversal of fortune.

There’s a lesson for businesses in here.

Keep doing what you did that made you

successful, and don’t neglect the basics. At the same time, find areas that you can improve and make the changes that will take your organization to the next level.

Never give in to the temptation to feel like you can’t fail. Oh, how the mighty have fallen! The true measure of a successful person is someone who works just as hard – or harder – once they have “made it.” They don’t fall prey to the trap of working harder only when things aren’t going their way.

These young ballplayers probably don’t realize that their sports are preparing them for future challenges. They are busy working hard yet having fun, enjoying the social aspects of teamwork and celebrating their small victories. Do you recognize parallels to the world of work there?

I give a lot of credit to kids’ sports coaches who volunteer so much time teaching, encouraging, disciplining and celebrating with their teams. I also value managers who do the same for their professional workers. They are the real winners.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Old Time Medicine

A recent conversation with friends turned to the subject of old time methods of medical cures.

I wasn’t taking notes, but even at my advanced age, I do remember some of the old cures discussed.

These home cures were used primarily because they were tried, successful, cheap and were readily available. The doctor was usually located in some neighboring town, which with a horse and buggy, required a lengthy travel time, plus since there was no telephone service, the patient was not certain that the doctor was at the “clinic.” Doctors made house calls and that sometimes made it difficult to locate them.

A poultice was frequently used to draw infections from the body. These poultices were sometimes used to draw unwanted chest congestion using a strong, hot layer of mustard, called a mustard plaster to relieve a chest cold. In other cases a mixture of strong peppers could be used. It worked in two ways.

First it did reduce the cold symptoms and secondly there was a good feeling created by having the plaster removed from the chest.

Other forms of poultices were used to draw poisons from puncture wounds, since

at that time tetanus shots were not common.

I remember discussions about getting lock jaw from being injured by some dirty, rusty metal. Lock jaw was considered a terminal condition. To avoid lock jaw, the wound was covered with an external poultice of a salt pack or various items such as the plastic-like skin located on the inside of a chicken egg shell.

This procedure drew poison from a puncture wound, such as stepping on a nail.

Another rather common poultice was created by placing a slice of bread in hot whole cow’s milk and placed over the puncture wound. After a day, it was replaced. When the bread slice was removed it contained a dark stain, which was some of the poison drawn from the injury.

Cuts were treated using several different methods. Thinking back, I guess if the cure was to be effective, it needed to hurt more than the injury. One method was to pour either drinking or rubbing alcohol over the wound.

Another was to pour iodine on the cut. Another was to put powdered sugar in the cut. Some other cures included exposing the wound to kerosene or diesel fuel. These cures certainly created an impression in your mind to be careful to avoid future cuts, since the cure may be more painful than the cut itself. Sometimes one would not tell mother about an injury to avoid these cures.

One cure that is not painful and works very well is putting crushed raw potato on a burn. I was first exposed to this cure while working with my future brother-in-law in the cook-shack at a carnival. The front end of the

cook-shack included a tank of boiling oil for making French fries and fried onion rings.

Above the boiling oil was a shelf with gallons of pickles and olives as decoration for the shack. While making French fries a gallon jar of oil fell off of the shelf and into the oil. The resultant splash covered the front of Rodger’s face and body with hot oil. A carny lady, who was sitting at the side eating counter, jumped over the counter and yelled “where are your raw potatoes.” She smashed up some potatoes and placed them directly on the burns. Rodger had some red spots for a couple of days, but didn’t blister or have any skin come off. The carny lady said that the starch in a raw potato will draw the burn and pain from the body. I

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I am starting a new sermon series at church. I just got done going through 1 John and the primary lesson in this very small book is “doing love.” Love is a verb, an action word, but most people put it into a feeling category.

So, when you don’t “feel” like you love your spouse anymore, it must be done. But if we make a commitment and follow through with actions, no matter how we feel, there would be more happier marriages.

Our next study comes from Galatians, another small book but packed with demonstrations of Grace. The quick definition of grace is “undeserved favor” but there is so much meaning behind those two words that I cannot do it justice in just a few words. Take a criminal for instance, if someone murdered your child, and this person was caught, what would your

response be? Right… mine too, give that murderer the full extent of the law.

It is the same with us, we all are law breakers in God’s eye. Romans 3:23 says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” And Romans 6:23 “For the wages (or penalty) of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” That is Grace! We all deserve death, separation from God forever, but because of His love for us, we get forgiveness and life. We get that Grace by turning our life over to the giver of life, Jesus Christ. Then, instead of guilt and condemnation, we get peace and joy. First John says that we ought to love others, in the same way He loved us, that’s Grace.

Bernadine J. Bartkowicz

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Bernadine J. Bartkowicz, age 89 of Bowlus, was held Monday, July 26, 2021 at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Bernadine died Monday at Serenity Village in Avon.

Arrangements were made with the MillerCarlin Funeral Homes.

Bernadine was born May 19, 1932 in Elmdale Township to Joseph and Catherine (Opatz) Maciej. She married Donald Bartkowicz on May 15, 1950 in Elmdale.

The couple bought a farm near Elmdale and worked on it over 60 years, helping to make it a Century farm. She loved spending time

Eunice Aralene Kohner

E u n i c e Arlene Kohner of Albany, Minnesota, formerly of Mora, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Mother of Mercy in Albany.

She was 98 years old.

Eunice was born on June 24, 1923 in Portland, Oregon to Frank and Clara (Magedanz) Besser. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to the Iron Range in Minnesota. During her elementary school years, the family relocated to Ogilvie; she graduated from Ogilvie High School. During WWII she worked in the laboratory at the iron mine in Marble, MN. She then attended beauty school and worked in beauty shops in the Mora/Ogilvie area.

Mary Anne Maile, age 93, of Avon, passed away at home peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday, July 23, 2021.

Mary was born on October 13, 1927 to Alois and Rose (Elfering) Tomsche. She is one of three sisters and one brother. She went to Albany Parochial School and received her

She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and even ice fishing. No matter how she felt, if you asked how she was doing, she would smile and say “chugging along.” She was a member of the St. Edwards Catholic Church, the St. Edward’s Rosary Sodality and the Daughters of Isabella.

She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, also siblings, Florence (Ray) Kurowski, Elmdale and Clarence Maciej, Elmdale; and daughter-in-law, Jane (Rudy) Tretter, Burtrum.

She later married Victor Maile in 1986. Mary enjoyed flowers and gardening. She loved to travel all around the world, including Alaska and Europe.

She was a religious teacher at Immaculate Conception in New Munich and St. Benedict’s in Avon. She enjoyed time with her family and grandchildren.

Aloys R. “Al” Bauer, age 76, formerly of Melrose, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 at the Harmony House in Pierz, Minnesota.

A Memorial Service will be held privately with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Inurnment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Aloys Raymond Bauer was born February 5, 1945 in Melrose, Minnesota to Ervin and Cecelia (Stern) Bauer. He graduated from Melrose High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army where he was honorably discharged after his service. He

marriage to Reginald J. Kohner at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ogilvie. She resided in Mora until moving to Albany to be near family. She was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in LWML and Women of Zion.

She enjoyed a large flower garden, sewing clothes for her daughters and draperies for the home, and many other handicrafts including making Chrismons for the church Christmas tree.

Eunice is preceded in death by her husband Reginald and sister Irene Prell.

She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Kohner of Rochester, MN and Marla (Dan) Swanson of Swanville, MN; grandchildren, Matthew and Meredith Swanson; greatgrandchildren, Evan, Kaylee and Ainsley.

A Funeral service was held on Monday, July 26, 2021 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Anthony Cloose officiating. Music was provided by Karen Kirschner- Danielson.

Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora. Arrangements were by the AkkermanIngebrand Funeral Home in Mora.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force: July 26, 2021: Conducted a search warrant in the 200 block of 3rd Street, City of Holdingford, Stearns County, Minnesota.

Prior to executing the search warrant, Investigators from the Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force learned that Brandon Damien Wright, 39 years of age from Holdingford Minnesota, was suspected of distributing methamphetamine throughout Central Minnesota. Investigators were able to set up controlled buys with Wright on multiple occasions and were able to purchase suspected methamphetamine from Wright.

Investigators then applied for a search warrant for Wright’s residence after they learned that Wright was suspected of storing methamphetamine at his residence. On July 26th, 2021, Investigators executed the

search warrant at Wrights residence. Inside the residence, Investigators located 36.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 8 suspected MDMA tablets, and suspected paraphernalia associated with the use and distribution of controlled substances.

Investigators were able to locate Wright as he was not home during the execution of the search warrant. Wright was transported to Stearns County Jail where he is being held for court on charges of 2nd degree sales of controlled substance, 2nd degree possession of controlled substance, and 5th degree possession of controlled substance.

The Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force was assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. The Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force is comprised of Investigators from St. Cloud and Sartell Police Departments and deputies from Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, Todd and Morrison Counties Sheriff’s Office.

When it comes time to buy a home, I recommend a 15-year, fixed rate loan with a down payment of at least 10%. Twenty percent is better, because it will help you avoid having to pay PMI (private mortgage insurance). Make sure the monthly payments on the loan are no more than 25% of your combined take home pay. Keeping the payments at 25% or below will make it easier to address other important financial issues, like saving and investing.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2013 Toyota SUV I am going to drive across country and back and will accumulate about 8000 miles on the odometer by the time I return. This vehicle has 45k miles on it and has not had any problems as of yet and no repairs other than tires and oil changes. Melrose City • June 17, 2021 The Melrose City Council met in a Regular Meeting on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. pursuant to due notice being given thereof. Present were Council Members Tony Klasen, Justin Frieler, Travis Frieler, and Mayor Joe Finken, City Administrator Colleen Winter, and City Clerk Patti Haase. Council Member Mark Hill was absent.

Mayor Finken presided thereat. The Council then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Mr. Travis Frieler, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the agenda as amended.

Mayor Finken then opened the floor to public comment. There were no comments.

The following items were considered for approval under the Consent Agenda a. The minutes from the Council’s May 20 Regular Meeting b. List of bills in the amount of $380,071.59 c. List of investments for the month of May d. Worms Lumber and Ready Mix 101 Year Anniversary e. Unique Boutique 46th Year Anniversary A motion was made by Mr. Travis Frieler, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the Consent Agenda items.

Sergeant Pat Nechanicky presented the Police Department’s May report. He noted there were 378 calls for service during that month, compared to 354 for May 2020. A total of 39 citations were written for the month of May. There were 84 verbal warnings and 0 written warning. The year-todate number of calls is 1647 compared to 1,476 in 2020. For the month of May 2021, the Department received 28 agency assist calls. Sergeant Nechanicky stated that the Melrose Police Department has been working on noise issues. The reports have been submitted to administration.

City Attorney Scott Dymoke reported on projects he has been working on for the city.

• Bonner Nuisance – Attended remote hearing on question of applicable building code provisions.

• JTEK Variance – Prepared recordable version of variance granted to JTEK property • Release of Right of First Refusal Introduction of new city engineer Nick Guilliams. Mr. Guilliams of WSB provided an update on the following WSB Project No. R-017073 2021 Chip Seal Project: Contracts have been signed by the City and will be forwarded to the contractor. Contractor is planning to start construction on August 4th. A preconstruction meeting will be held in July.

Legislative Update– City Administrator Winter received an update from Rep Anderson that the fire remediation grant funds and sales tax exemption are currently included in the ombudsman bill.

No word yet on the bonding dollars.

MADA– City Administrator Winter presented the report submitted by Traci Ryan with Ryan Consulting LLC. Housing continues to be the #1 priority. Several MADA members along with Council member Hill toured a newly opened tax credit project in Waite Park MN that was developed by Sand Companies. This project would be similar to workforce housing that is needed in Melrose The City received their annual quote for general liability, errors and omissions, auto, equipment, and property insurance through the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust (LMCIT) for the period of May 15, 2021-May 15, 2022. The total quote is $98,823 from $90,049 for the 20202021 coverage. The cost for the premium is shared between the General at 39% and Utility Funds at 61%. The City’s insurance coverage has a $5,000 deductible, $15,000 aggregate. The City needs to decide whether or not to waive the statutory tort liability limits. The decision to waive or not to waive the statutory limits has the following effects: 1. If the City does not waive the statutory limits, an individual claimant would be able to recover no more than $500,000 on any claim to which the statutory limits apply. The total which all claimants would be able to recover for a single occurrence to which the statutory tort limits apply would be limited to $1,500,000. These statutory tort limits would apply regardless of whether or not the City purchases the optional excess liability coverage.

2. If the City waives the statutory tort limits and does not purchase excess liability coverage, a single claimant could potentially recover up to $1,500,000 on a single occurrence. The total which all claimants would be able to recover for a single occurrence to which the statutory tort limits apply would also be limited to $1,500,000 regardless of the number of claimants.

3. If the City waives the statutory tort limits and purchases excess liability coverage ($1 million for $10,293), a single claimant could potentially recover an amount up to the limit of the coverage purchased. The total which all claimants would be able to recover for a single occurrence to which the statutory tort limits apply would also be limited to the amount of coverage purchased, regardless of the number of claimants. In the past the City has not purchased the excess liability coverage. In the past, the city has chosen Option 2.

The Commission at its June 14, 2021, meeting approved the insurance quote of $98,823 to waive the monetary limits on municipal tort liability, to keep the deductible at $5,000/$15,000, and not purchase excess liability coverage.A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried concurring with the Public Utilities Commission approving the insurance quote of $98,823 to waive the monetary limits on municipal tort liability, to keep the deductible at $5,000/$15,000, and not purchase excess liability coverage.

The Council next gave consideration for the city to adopt the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s (BCA) new master Joint Powers Agreement (JPA). By law, (Minn. Stat. § 471.59, Subd.1) the JPA must be approved by the city council. The purpose of this Agreement is to create a method by which the Agency has access to those systems and tools for which it has eligibility, and to memorialize the requirements to obtain access and the limitations on the access. A motion was made by

Mr. Travis Frieler seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried to adopt Resolution No. 2021-22, Resolution Approving the State of Minnesota Joint Powers Agreements with the City of Melrose on Behalf of its City Attorney and Police Department and entering into the State of Minnesota Joint Powers Agreement Criminal Justice Agency.

Mayor Finken noted that the ARPA funding will be available however the City will need to apply for the funds. Staff has not been provided with the amount of funding the city will be receiving however the council must authorize the requesting of the funding. A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried to adopt Resolution No. 2021-23 to Apply for the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund Established under the American Rescue Plan Act. Mayor Finken stated that Ambulance Coordinator Jenn Tschida is requesting that the Ambulance Department Policy be updated to change the eligible age of a department member from 18 years of age to 16 years of age. Members under 18 years of age are not allowed to drive the ambulance vehicle. A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried approving the revisions to the Ambulance Department policy as presented.

Mayor Finken noted that on June 5th, interviews were held for the Ambulance Training Officer and Ambulance Secretary. Ambulance Coordinator Tschida, Ambulance Assistant Coordinator Ulbricht, City Administrator Winter and Ad Hoc Representative Bunker Hill were involved with the interviews. The Ambulance Department received two applicants for the Training Officer position and one applicant for the Ambulance Secretary position. The interview panel is recommending EMT Santina Lovelace for the Training Officer role, effective 7/1/2021, and Tessa Goihl for the Ambulance Secretary role, effective 7/1/2021. The Training Officer would be for a period of 4 years, and the Ambulance Secretary would be a two-year position. A motion was made

by Mr. Travis Frieler, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried approving the appointment of Santina Lovelace as the Training Officer. A motion was then made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried approving the appointment of Tessa Goihl as the Ambulance Department Secretary.

Mayor Finken stated that the City of Melrose, as of June 30, 2005, has entered into a First Right of Refusal for real property located: Lot Five (5), Block 1, Melrose Industrial Park Plat Three. Within the agreement, it states that if the property owner receives an acceptable bona fide offer to purchase the property, they shall give the City notice. The City shall respond within 20 days after receipt. A final purchase agreement has yet to be signed; however, the purchaser and seller have requested that the City waive its First Right of Refusal to the property and waive its 20-day notice and its survival rights. Both parties would like to close shortly and have asked that the City release its rights to allow for a timely closing. A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried authorizing the City of Melrose to release all rights as outlined in the Rights of First Refusal.

The following informational items were then reviewed: a. Utilities Commission’s May 10 Regular Meeting minutes b. The League of MN Cities Insurance Trust came to Melrose in October 2020 for an insurance appraisal.

A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried to adjourn the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

WSB is currently working with Centerpoint Energy regarding shallow gas mains that may need to be relocated prior to construction.

WSB Project No. R-014036-000 – CR 65 Drainage Improvements: Construction is complete. Final payment is on the June 17th City Council agenda.

WSB Project No. R-015456-000 2020 Street Improvements (including 5th Street N, 4th St. N & 3rd Ave N): WSB to schedule a final walk-through with Gary and send a final punch list to the contractor. Punchlist work will be scheduled for late June/early July.

2nd Street S and 3rd Ave SE Flooding Issue -5th Avenue Storm Sewer System: The preliminary plan has been completed and have been reviewed with staff. WSB to discuss the plan moving forward with City staff.

WSB Project No. R-015500-000 Melrose Road, Dam, and Bridge: Roadway: • Ongoing coordination with the City and private utilities on the watermain and utility crossings and the required easements to encompass those facilities. They will fall within City and County RW, however, RW and a permanent easement will likely need to be dedicated for roadway and utility purposes. City is working directly with CenterPoint Energy on the required easement.

• 60% roadway plans – City and County comments have been received. 60% plan continues progressing towards the 90% stage. Ongoing discussion regarding the location of the pedestrian crossing across CSAH 13. Locations being evaluated are 1st Street, the north end of the bridge, and the south side of the intersection of the park entrance.

• Open house to be held on June 17, 2021 Structures: • Bridge preliminary plans submitted on 3/22/2021. Working on addressing MnDOT comments and progressing final design. Pier footing designs in particular will need coordination with MnDOT. • Draft Dam edits to Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Plan are being worked on. The O&M Plan and draft repair plans are expected to be submitted June 17 for review.

Permitting: • DNR Public Waters Work permit and USACE permit applications were submitted on May 24. DNR permit invoice was paid by WSB on June 2nd. DNR 60-day review period started on June 2nd.

• CLOMR application in process. We expect to submit to FEMA by EOD June 11th.

• City must send notification letter to impacted property owners.

Grant: • Submitted the LCCMR Grant application on 4/2/2021.

• No Lessard Sams grant application will be submitted per City input.

City Administrator Winter provided an update on the following: OPEN HOUSE– RDB PROJECT, 4:30-6:00 pm. WSB will be available to answer the public’s questions re: the RDB project. Stearns Co. will also be present along with possibly representatives from the DNR. WSB will give a short presentation
