Lessons in discipline from long distance running -By Harvey Mackay

Wa t c h i n g the Olympic trials for long distance running events, I was again struck by how little margin there is for error in making the U.S. Olympic team.

Athletes who had trained for years lost by fractions of seconds. The winners go to Rio for the Summer Olympics, and the losers go home heartbroken.

Individual sports like long distance running are especially tough because runners are on their own. They are not playing as a team. They must have

tremendous desire, determination, dedication and discipline, notwithstanding commitment, enthusiasm, and mental toughness.

They have to set goals and prepare. It’s the same in business.

To become a winning athlete or business person, you must be a hungry fighter – hungry for success, hungry for victory and hungry to simply be the best you can be. A coach can show you what to do, how to practice and how often, and offer motivational tips. But the bottom line is that it is up to you.

Sometimes desire is more important than talent. You must want to succeed more than anything. And sometimes even that is not enough, as the Olympic trials proved.

I’m as competitive as anyone. Close friends might even say more. But I’ve always approached life with the desire to do the best I can. If I do that, I’m usually satisfied.

I ran my first marathon after my fiftieth birthday. I’ve run nine more since then, for a total of five New York Marathons, four Twin Cities Marathons and the 100th Boston Marathon. I’ve also completed three half marathons the last three years. I’m proud of these accomplishments, not because I ever came close to earning a spot on the

Olympic team or even winning the race.

I was just happy that I finished, did the best that I could do and left it all out on the course.

For amateur runners like me, the key to running a marathon is that it is not so much a physical challenge as it is mental. Your body does not want you to run a marathon. Your mind must make you do it. Therefore, you have to develop a rationale so powerful, a determination so strong, that it will enable your mind to overcome the vigorous protests of your body.

The important thing is that you start off on the right foot. Preparation is the difference between dropping out of the race and finishing it.

Bill Rodgers, winner of four Boston and four New York Marathons, said, “To be a consistent winner means preparing not just one day, one month, or even one year – but for a lifetime.”

To run a marathon is to practice a form of self-discipline based entirely on visualization. You must imagine yourself doing the impossible. And that enables you to do it. Time? It’s not always important. Anyone who finishes has won. They have beaten the competition – themselves.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Weather Predictions

Our early settlers in this area did not have weather reports on a radio, television or access to internet. They had a need to attempt to predict what the weather would be during the upcoming days and also the upcoming season.

The original seasonal predictor was The Farmers Almanac, which was published in 1792 and is still available today. It gives general weather predictions regarding precipitation, temperature and snow depth for areas of the country. Many people today in the course of their conversations say, “The Farmers Almanac says we’ll have a hard winter.” This prediction is usually close to correct. But it is also said that if the brown stripe on the wooly worm is wide or if the muskrat houses are tall we will have a hard winter. These predictors will be correct sometimes.

Predicting weather for only a few days into the future is more accurate.

Some of the predictors may seem ridiculous but after close examination, they do have some scientific basis. My grandmother predicted weather on a

daily basis. One predictor was if there was a spider on the window it was going to rain. Another was if the clouds were high, fair weather was coming, however if there was a ring around the moon, it would rain within 3 days. She would also observe how high the swallows were flying, if high there would be clear weather and if they flew low, rain or a thunder storm was coming. In later years it was discovered that bugs fly at different levels depending on the barometric pressure, swallows eat bugs, so they will gather where the bugs are.

If the cattle are acting somewhat crazy, running in the pasture and kicking up their hoofs, there is a thunderstorm coming. Red sky in the morning is a warning that there is a storm potential, but a red sky in the evening predicts favorable weather. An absence of dew during the evening indicates a potential rain event. Of course, the most accepted and accurate predictor is when a person of maturity says, “my arthritis is bothering me, so we are going to get some bad weather.”

Weather predictions were greatly improved as a result of the Armistice Day Blizzard on November 11-12, 1941. The storm was a great surprise, since there were no weather reports warning of the impending drop of 60 degrees, violent 70 mile per hour winds and white-out snow conditions. No-one was prepared for the storm, which resulted in the

really compete against: it is the little voice inside us that grows louder and says, “Stop.” It is, unfortunately, a familiar sound. We hear it all our lives – at work, at school, in all areas of our lives. It tells us we cannot succeed. We cannot finish. The boss expects too much. The company is too demanding.

The homework assignment takes too long. My family is too unappreciative.

The truth is that many successful people are no more talented than unsuccessful people. The difference between them lies in the old axiom that successful people do those things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do.

Successful people have the determination, the will, the focus, the drive to complete the tough jobs. When I am hiring employees, I must admit that I take a longer look at resumes which include experiences that demonstrate the kind of commitment required of runners.

Running may not be your thing, but all of us have to earn a living one way or another. The majority will work anywhere from 35 to 45 years. The average person will have three to five career changes and perhaps 10 jobs before their fortieth birthday.

Statistics like these make a foot race

pale in comparison to the treadmill so many workers must master just to bring home a paycheck. Good training and the right mental preparation will help you find a job you love, that challenges you and satisfies you, and makes you want to get back in the race every day.

Here is a picture of the thumb referenced in Tom Kuehne’s article July 14.

The thumb belongs to my wife’s 93 year old aunt who still has a cottage on Big Birch Lake. The accident was caused by getting the finger caught in a door and she recalls her mother putting the detached portion on the thumb and running to Dr. Laughlin’s office for the re-attachment. The weather forecasting office was located in Chicago and only worked an 8 hour shift per day. The improvement included a weather prediction office in Minnesota, working on a 24 hour basis.

This, along with improved radar and local weather reporting, now gives a much more accurate weather report.

In the absence of our modern weather predictors, the old timers did a pretty good job of predicting weather.

Obituaries LaVerne “Vern” Radtke Funeral S e r v i c e s celebrating the life of LaVerne “Vern” Radtke, 85, of Albany, was held at 2:30 PM on We d n e s d a y, July 27, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

Pastor Steven Olson officiated and a reception followed.

In honoring LaVerne’s wishes, an immediate burial was private.

LaVerne died peacefully at Mother of Mercy in Albany.

LaVerne was born on July 15, 1931 to Emil and Myrtle (Yonke) on the family farm in Albany. He grew up with a brother and sister and graduated from the local high school. LaVerne joined the United States Army and

Dan Walz officiated followed by a luncheon and then burial with military honors at Seven Dolors Cemetery in Albany. Jerome died on Friday, July 22 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

proudly served his country for four years. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter commendation and was overseas during the Korean War. LaVerne spent his entire life on the family farm which, in 2014, earned the designation of a Century Farm. He was a dairy farmer and one of the first to modernize his barn with a milkline in the pipeline. Although he was a quite person and enjoyed a bachelor’s lifestyle, family was very important to him and he enjoyed family gatherings. LaVerne enjoyed fishing and always made sure there was time for it. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the Albany American Legion.

Left to remember LaVerne is his sister Marlys Burke of St. Cloud, his nephew Scott (Janet) Radtke of Albany, and other family and friends.

He is reunited in Heaven with his parents Emil and Myrtle, his brother Norman, and his brother-in-law Donald Burke.

(Obermiller) Habiger. He served in the Army during World War II as a general’s driver and translator in the European Theater. After serving in the Army, he became a lifelong farmer. Jerome married Helene Sabrowsky on Sept. 6, 1952 in St. Paul. The couple lived on their farm near Freeport. Jerome loved the MN Twins and reading the St. Cloud Times each day. He was a member of the St. Martin American Legion and Sacred Heart Church in Freeport.

Survivors include sisters-in-law Donna and Jill Sabrowsky, nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helene, siblings Joseph, Christine Moga, Mat Domke, Frank, Catherine Gretsch, Casey, George, Al, Lawrence, and Sally Schriver.

Dear Dave, My wife and I are on Baby Step 3 of your plan, and we’re about halfway to building our fully funded emergency fund. We don’t like our current home very much, and we’d like to sell and move as soon as possible. We have a little over $30,000 equity in the place, so would selling the house be a viable option for funding Baby Step 3?

-Justin Dear Justin, I wouldn’t sell the house just to do Baby Step 3. That’s usually a pretty easy Baby Step after you’ve gotten everything paid off except the house.

As you know, a fully funded emergency fund means saving three to six months of expenses, so you shouldn’t have to sell your home in order to accomplish that.

However, if you don’t like the house anyway, and you’re already planning on selling it, then yes, set some of the equity aside. I wouldn’t put all of the equity into the next deal.

I’d hold back my three to six months of expenses, so that when you move into another house you’re debt-free with a fully funded emergency fund sitting there.

It sounds like there’s nothing to prevent you from selling it today, if you’re sure that’s what you both want to do. Just hold on to enough so that you still have an emergency fund in place, and use the remainder for your down payment. So if that equation works for you, sell the house. If not, you may need to completely save up your emergency fund before you sell in order to make it work.

Regardless, when you move I want you to have an emergency fund and be debt-free in addition to your down payment. That’s what we’re after!

Dear Dave, I make $25,000 a year, and I’m single. I expect my salary to increase to $35,000 next year, so can I get by with a $500 starter emergency fund instead of $1,000? I have about $38,000 in debt right now, including student loans, and I don’t know how to keep up with bills and everything if I try saving a bigger emergency fund.

-Jane Dear Jane, You really need a starter emergency fund of $1,000 if you’re at a point in life where student loans are in the picture. It might seem like an impossible task right now, but that should be your first big goal. A written, monthly budget will go a long way toward helping you achieve that goal.

Making a budget for your money isn’t rocket science. It’s a simple, written planning process where you give a name and destination to every dollar you make before the month begins. Food, shelter, clothing, transportation and utilities are necessities, so they come first. After you’ve taken care of those, make sure you’re current on your debts. Once all that is out of the way, put every spare dollar you can into your emergency fund.

If you do this with a sense of urgency, and limit spending to necessities, it won’t take very long.

You’ll be surprised by how quickly it can happen, and you’ll love the newfound sense of security you’ll have in knowing $1,000 is sitting there ready to cover life’s little emergencies!

Five Simple Rules for Living a Life of Happiness - By Doug Sandler One of the greatest feelings you can possess is happiness.

When you are happy, people want to be around you.

It’s a simple attraction principle; when you are happy, you attract other happy people.

Happiness can spread quickly and is very contagious when gratitude, generosity, and positivity are added to your relationships.

Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the positive effects and health benefits of being happy. It’s hard to argue with the facts, a happy you equals a healthy you. Although I have always considered myself a happy person personally, as I have developed my professional life as well, I have discovered that the happier I am, the more successful my business became too.

Here are five rules to help you live a life of happiness: 1. DON’T TAKE LIFE SO SERIOUSLY. As I was growing up my dad would always have to remind me that worrying about things that are outside of my control was harmful to my attitude and ultimately challenging my ability to be happy. Plus, I had no control so I should stop worrying. He’d continue by saying that worrying about something within my control was not needed since I had the ability to fix the problem by taking action. Our time on this earth is limited, it’s extremely important to make the most of it while we are here. Look at life as a dress rehearsal, even if we mess up our lines, we can stop, take some advice from the experts that support us and guide us through it, and get back to the show.

2. DEFINE FOR YOURSELF WHAT SUCCESS MEANS. Don’t let others define what success means to you. Success to you might be a filled bank account, fancy automobiles and material items. To others it might mean free time, lots of family gatherings and plenty of staycations. Professionally, success to

me means working for myself, never having to hire staff and creating my own products and services. Personally, it means loving and being loved while enjoying the time I have in this lifetime. Someone else might define success as being CEO of a Fortune 500 company, having hundreds of staff members and having a corporate Amex card. You have the ability to make your own goals, dream your own dreams and define what success means to you.

3. YOU HAVE AN UNLIMITED AMOUNT OF DO-OVERS About 40 years ago, my brother and I would play ping pong in our rec room. To the right of the ping pong table stood a rubber tree plant. When the ball either hit the rubber tree plant or came too close to make a return shot, we’d yell “DO-OVER!” As an adult we have unlimited do-overs. As your professional career evolves, if you don’t like the direction you are going, take a do-over. Nearly 3 years ago, at 48, I decided to take a professional do-over, reinventing my professional life to where it is today as an author, speaker and business consultant. I have never been happier in my life and while there have been some very scary moments, it has also proven to be one of the most rewarding directions I have ever gone, making me extremely happy.

4. WORRY LESS ABOUT WHAT THEY THINK. Who the heck is they anyway? And honestly, until they are paying my bills and living my life, “they” don’t know what is best for me. I get to define my happiness and determine what life is all about for me. What it really comes down to is this: you have to deal with the consequences of your actions and “they” get to walk away. There will always be a court of public opinion and you will never be able to please all of the people in that court, so you may as well make decisions and take action based upon what works best for you and not “them.”

5. PLAY BY YOUR OWN RULES. There is nothing worse than a static policies and procedures manual. Sure, there are some rules that are very important to follow. I usually put them into the category of common sense. Rules like, “Don’t harass

Happiness is created by treating others fairly, doing what feels right, making a positive impact on the planet and by following what you are passionate about.

When I originally sat down to write this, I was challenged by the idea of creating a set of rules pertaining to making rules for your life. Use these rules as guidelines and suggestions.

Keep in mind, these are the rules that apply to my life and are “serving suggestions” for you. If you don’t like them, get your own set of rules and start getting your happy on, today. I know it will be worth it and will ultimately, make you very happy.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

The Latest on Potential Special Session and a Heartwarming Story of Rural Folks Sticking Together Negotiations continued last week between legislative leaders and Gov. Dayton, with the prospect of a special session gaining traction once again. They’ve even discussed a timeframe for coming back to the Capitol, with the third week of August being mentioned. It appears some of the additional spending demands by the governor have been relaxed, but there was no mention of any agreement on funding for transit, and more specifically, Southwest Light Rail. That’s the project that derailed the process in the final minutes of the regular session back in May. What’s unusual about these negotiations is that all parties agree the two bills that didn’t get passed on the last day of the regular session are good bills that should be approved. The tax bill was vetoed by the governor because of a one-word error he said would cost the state $100 million. That’s correct if the mistake had been allowed to go uncorrected for a full three years, although that would never have happened. Had he signed the bill with the understanding that the word “and” would be changed to “or” early in the next session, there would have been little cost to the state.

There was even discussion that, with that understanding, state agencies may not have changed any of their collection procedures for just a couple of months, and the additional cost could have been zero.

The bonding bill is the other piece of legislation that needs to be passed and signed into law. Again, there was strong bi-partisan agreement that the bill was good. However, several metro senators attached the light rail funding amendment to the bill in the final minutes of session which effectively killed it. The unfortunate aspect of it not being passed in May is that, in many cases, a whole year of construction has been lost for

some of the projects that received funding in the bill.

The county fair season is in full swing. Pope County held its last week, and the Stearns County Fair is coming up this week. A tradition of local fairs is the 4-H livestock auction, where the top-rated animals are “sold” at auction in a fun event that helps the kids with their expenses during a trip to the state fair. I read a story over the weekend of such an event in Iowa, at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Manchester. The story was in the Telegraph Herald newspaper from Dubuque, and illustrates how folks in rural communities stick together and help each other in times of tragedy.

The story goes like this: A young girl from the area had been killed in a tragic utility vehicle accident last month, and her 19-year old cousin wanted to do something special to honor her memory. So Jamie Nefzger announced before his prize Angus steer was sold at the auction that the proceeds would be going toward a scholarship in his cousin’s honor. The owner of a local trucking company bought the 1700-pound steer for $4 a pound.

As Greg Preussner made his way down to the show ring to claim his prize, he turned to the boy’s father and told him to sell the steer again.

So they restarted the auction and sold the steer again … and again … and again. When it was over, the steer had been sold 11 times and over $40,000 was raised for the scholarship. Young Jamie was shocked. He told the newspaper, “There wasn’t a dry eye in the show ring. It was something to see how a tragedy like this can bring people together.”

Employer Retirement Education Plays Key Role in Long-Term Financial Success Ramsey Solutions finds employee access to retirement education increases savings and confidence A new study by Ramsey Solutions, a leading company in financial education, finds that employees with access to financial and retirement education have less stress, more savings and more confidence than those without access. Results show 40 percent of workers say their employers do not provide any type of retirement or financial education and seven out of 10 workers with zero retirement savings do not have access to retirement education from their employers.

This report is the second in a fourpart series evaluating the state of retirement in America as revealed by a survey consisting of more than 1,000 U.S. adults. This installment focuses on where and how Americans learn about retirement and how that impacts

their retirement savings and financial success.

The most common sources American workers rely on for retirement education are their employers (35 percent) and their parents (35 percent), followed by family/friends (32 percent). Workers who listed their employers as a first or second source have more money saved than those who listed parents or family members as a top source. In addition, those with access to retirement education through their employers are more likely to experience positive emotions like excitement (49 percent) and optimism (40 percent), while those with no educational resources at work report higher levels of anxiety (47 percent) and fear (40 percent).

Continued Goals: Throughout the summer and the legislative interim, I plan to continue my work in a number of areas to help your family. At the top of the list is aiding our at-risk children around the state. As a member of the Child Protection Taskforce, I supported and helped pass a number of bills to assist vulnerable kids as they navigate extremely difficult situations.

Along with that, I’ll continue to strive for early learning scholarships to benefit young students in need. The best way to reach our learners and close the achievement gap is through scholarships to help low-income families afford quality early learning education.

This year, we passed an additional $35 million for rural broadband initiatives, and I’m looking forward to helping those funds, as well as federal dollars, make a difference in our unserved and underserved communities.

The Mayonnaise Jar... And Coffee

By Laura Bankston When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar...and the coffee...

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “yes.”

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “ I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things - your God, your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions-things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else-the small stuff.

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that

are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18 holes. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.” Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.”

July 17, 2016: At 10:27 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office took a call of a hit and run in the City of Grey Eagle. Alexandra Tunintseff reported she had parked her car facing north in the grassy parking area on the south side of the volleyball courts along Maple S. While parked there her car was struck in the rear driver’s side bumper causing a small amount of damage. It is believed the accident took place between the hours of 2 pm on 7-16-16 and 8 am 7-17-16. Anyone with information on this incident should call the Todd county Sheriff’s Office.

July 17, 2016: At 16:21 John Ainali of rural Grey Eagle reported damage had been done to his hay field. It appeared that a vehicle traveling eastbound on Ascot Rd. near the intersection of Austin Trail left the roadway entered Ainali’s field and made a U-Turn causing damage to the hay field. Any one with information in this matter should contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

July 20, 2016: At 18:29 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover accident near the address of 24654 County 48, Round Prairie Township. A 2009 Chevy Impala, driven by Adam Bartkowicz (age 21) of rural Swanville, rolled after entering the ditch. Bartkowicz did not suffer any apparent injuries, vehicle sustained severe damage.

Zebra Mussels Confirmed in East Spirit Lake in Otter Tail County; Lake Osakis in Todd and Douglas Counties The Department of Natural Resources has confirmed zebra mussels in northwestern Minnesota’s East Spirit Lake in Otter Tail County and central Minnesota’s Lake Osakis in Todd and Douglas counties.

On July 9, an East Spirit Lake user brought a one-quarter inch zebra mussel to the DNR Fergus Falls office. A subsequent two-day search of four locations

by DNR staff found one live zebra mussel one-quarter mile from the initial report.

On July 20, DNR invasive species staff conducted dive and shoreline searches to investigate reported zebra mussel veligers (larvae) in Lake Osakis.

They found two three-quarter inch adult zebra mussels.

Invasive species alert signs are being posted at lake accesses, and the DNR will determine whether connected waters will also be added to the infested waters list. The DNR appreciates the help of the alert citizen who reported the find on East Spirit Lake and the work of the Sauk River Watershed District collecting veligers that led to the confirmation in Lake Osakis.

While zebra mussels are a serious problem for infested lakes, more than 98 percent of Minnesota’s lakes are not listed as infested with zebra mussels.

To protect the state’s waters from the spread of invasive species and the environmental, recreational and economic damage they cause, Minnesota law requires boaters and anglers to: • Clean their watercraft of aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species.

• Drain all water by removing drain plugs and keeping them out during transport.

• Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash.
