Criticism challenges creativity -By Harvey Mackay The great American film maker Cecil B. DeMille said, “Creativity is a drug I cannot live without.”

As I’ve said in the past, I always try to start each day with a healthy dose of vitamin C – Creativity. I believe that creative ideas and actions are what make life interesting.

More important than drugs and vitamins is having a thick skin and being unfazed by criticism. Even the most unstoppable ideas in history have been criticized. Here are some of the more memorable ones.

The history books are full of people who realized creativity begins with destroying perceived limitations and proving the skeptics wrong.

Advertising genius Alex Osborn integrated creativity with everything he did – every day. Considered the “father of brainstorming”—a term he helped coin in 1939 – Osborn devoted his life to promoting and teaching creative thinking. The fiercest enemy of creativity, he believed, was criticism:

“Creativity is so delicate a flower that praise tends to make it bloom, while discouragement often nips it in the bud.

Any of us will put out more and better ideas if our efforts are appreciated.”

Creativity doesn’t run in a straight line.

It can run into roadblocks.

They’re not always obvious. You may have to go around them or over them, or tunnel beneath them. But first you have to recognize them. Among the obstacles you need to steer clear of: • Excessive rationality.

The creative process doesn’t always follow logical rules. It often involves looking for connections among unrelated (and sometimes contradictory) objects, goals, processes or ideas. Excuse yourself of the need to make sense all the time and let your intuition guide you. When you stick to conventional techniques, you cannot expect unconventional results.

• Obsession with size. A Big Idea is sometimes the sum of a lot of smaller ideas. Facebook began with a few hundred students at Harvard.

Now it dominates the Internet in most of the world. Don’t reject a concept or approach because it doesn’t feel like an instant home run. Giant leaps usually begin with baby steps.

• Need to be productive. You can’t always predict where an idea will lead, so don’t rule anything out even if it doesn’t seem immediately practical.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Hay-mow It really was quite different from the gymnasium that we found at most of the local town schools.

One of the big differences was that our farm gymnasium didn’t have a seating area for the audience and this was a good thing. The gymnasium I’m referring to was the upstairs hay-mow back on the “home place.” Lots of open space and usually a floor covered with a thick cushion of hay. This secluded open space was an invitation for yesterday’s farm kids, especially boys, to let their imaginations go to work.

Yes, it was a rather dusty, itchy place with lots of spider webs and sparrows.

Of course there were also sparrow droppings that we somehow didn’t mind. It was a place that was rather secluded, since there was only one way to get there and the old wooden ladder and board hay barriers were not easy to climb for anyone other than kids.

The best time in the hay-mow was when the neighbor kids happen to be visiting when it was raining. There was a small platform in the peak of the roof on the end of the barn opposite from the end with the big hay access door. The distance between the platform and the hay layer was usually at least 15 feet.

Remember how much fun it was to jump from the platform to the hay? The purpose of the platform was to repair the hay carrier while it was still attached to the hay track. Grabbing a rope under the hay carrier and pushing off of the platform would give the rider a ride to the middle of the barn before dropping to the hay. As good as a carnival ride!

The ropes hanging from the carrier offered an opportunity to swing from side to side. It was a game to see who could swing higher and closer to the barn roof. This swinging action was a great to create arm strength. We loved it.

There were also those who would climb to the large open hay access door at the end of the barn. This would allow the kid to not only jump to the hay, but to look out on the cow-yard from a new and exciting angle. A miss-step from that location would drop the kid outside of the barn, which would be an extremely hard landing. But the danger made the day much more exciting and we were looking to add excitement to our lives.

The younger kids would take sticks along to the hay-mow to make the games of cowboys and Indians or sheriffs and outlaws more real. The piles of hay were

excellent hiding places for ambush.

Sometimes we would feel that we should be doing something useful while in the hay-mow, so we would spend time knocking down the sparrow nests from the hay track and rafters. Somehow when this activity was happening, several cats would suddenly appear to assist us. Frequently this project would require someone to get a fishing cane pole to reach the nests. The removal of the nests was one of the few hay-mow activities we shared with dad.

Sometimes we were excited to find a nest of kittens. They had never experienced human interaction, so if they were older, we would get some scratches handling them. No big deal, but if mother saw the scratches, we would get the iodine treatment, which did cause a burning sensation.

We itched and sneezed from the time spent in the hay-mow, but the itching and sneezing went away and we still keep the memories.

You may be able to adapt it, or it may become useful in the future when your situation has changed.

• Fear of (fill in the blank). If you’re hesitant, ask what you’re afraid of.

Failure? Success? Drawing attention to yourself? Criticism? Creativity always involves an element of risk. You may not be able to make it disappear, but your fear will lose much of its power if you confront it directly.

One of the most prolific periods of creativity in history occurred during the Renaissance from the 14th–17th centuries in Europe. According to a Huffington Post article by Anurag Harsh, people realized that creativity wasn’t some divine gift, but instead a talent that could be cultivated.

Among his points, he said Renaissance thinkers were contrarian.

They didn’t settle for the status quo, they challenged conventional wisdom and took new approaches to the world.

In addition, they were nonconformists. They wanted to revolutionize the culture in technology, the arts and philosophy. Harsh also contends they were curious and questioned everything. They dismissed the tried and true in favor of novel ideas.

Finally, he said that instead of limiting themselves to a single area of knowledge, they connected different ways of thinking that led to advances in science, art and many other areas.

Consider Leonardo da Vinci, the ultimate symbol of the Renaissance, who was interested in invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history and cartography.

You may never paint a Mona Lisa or draw the Vitruvian Man, but what inspiration his creativity offers! Start your day with a healthy dose of Vitamin C – Creativity – and watch what happens!

Obituaries Peter Michael Justinian Frenzel

Peter Michael Justinian Frenzel, We s l e y a n University Professor Emeritus, died at Middlesex Hospital on May 20, 2018 after a brief illness. He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on August 6, 1935, the fourth son of Paul and Paula Frenzel. He attended Saint Paul Academy and graduated from Yale University in 1958 with a BA in English. He received his Master of Arts from Middlebury College and his Ph.D. in German Language and Literature from University of Michigan. He did further graduate work at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.

Following three years of teaching German at his preparatory school, he joined the German Department at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in 1966. Some years after his attaining tenure, he was appointed Dean of Arts and Humanities for four years and, in his turn, was awarded the Marcus Taft Chair of the Department of German Language and Literature. He taught beginning and advanced German and worked with the Music Department and the Medieval Studies Department, which he helped organize and in which he taught with notable success.

At Wesleyan, he was a Board member and then President of the Friends of Davison Art Center, Editor of the newsletter of the Susan and William Wasch Center for Retired Faculty and acted as Graduation Marshall for many years. He played glockenspiel in the Wesleyan Pep Band (No rehearsing; no marching.) He rang the Wesleyan bells for many years (under the typically modest name “Ernest Toller”), and was instrumental in acquisition and installation of seven new bells, thereby constituting a full carillon.

Peter was a member of the Greater Middletown Preservation Trust, and served for six years on the building committee to restore the Wadsworth Mansion, where he later served as a docent. He was a Board member of the Connecticut Opera.

He belonged to the Conversational Club, and performed with the local Gilbert and Sullivan troupe.

His deep sense of humor and his unusual gift for rhyme and rhythm made him a master of doggerel and inventive verse, which he used on spirited occasions and recited with his singularly impressive voice. Not to be forgotten were his culinary gifts and especially “Famous Frenzel’s Mustard”, delivered to select friends at Christmastime. His love of opera and especially Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle sent him and Laurie to venues near and far.

As a qualified “Ring Nut” he saw at least twenty productions of the four-opera cycle.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laurie Neville Frenzel, grandchildren John Frenzel and Rita Frenzel, daughter Kim Frenzel and partner John Lucey, and his older brother Robert.

His children, Kathleen, Will and Paul predeceased him.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A Memorial Gathering was held at the Wadsworth Mansion on Sunday, June 17.

D o n a l d L. “Donnie” Mayers, age 90, of Melrose died peacefully, Friday, July 20, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose. Military honors were by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Donald Leo Mayers was born March 22, 1928 in New Munich, Minnesota, to Herman and Anna (Moser) Mayers. He went to school until the 8th grade and later served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. Donnie heard Jeanette singing on KASM Radio and later met her at the New Munich Ballroom. They were united in marriage on September 6, 1954 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

They moved around the first few years of marriage before settling in Melrose. Donnie was a Dragline operator for 30 years. During his retirement, he drove gravel truck for his brother, Erwin.

Donnie enjoyed playing cards, fishing, watching wrestling and any construction projects going on around the area. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, St. Peter’s Court 1556 Catholic Order of Foresters, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Mayers of Melrose; children, Steve Mayers of Melrose, Tom (Tracy) Mayers of Sauk Rapids, Luan (Steve) Weber of Cold Spring, Rick (Jenny) Mayers of Melrose, Brian (Kelly) Mayers of Sartell, and Linda (Harvey) Keller of Melrose; six grandchildren, one step-grandson, two great-grandchildren, and one step-greatgranddaughter; brothers, Raymond Mayers of Melrose and Sylvester Mayers of St. Paul; and brother-in-law, Norb Humbert of Melrose.

Donnie was preceded in death by his son, James “Sticky” Mayers on Oct. 15, 1983; parents; brother and sisters, Erwin Mayers, Viola Scholz, and Luella Humbert; infant sister, Loretta Mayers; sisters-in-law, Alda Mae Mayers and Monica Mayers; and brother-in-law, Jerry Scholz.

Serving as casket bearers were Steve, Tom, Rick, and Brian Mayers, Steve Weber, and Harvey Keller. Cross bearer was Luan Weber and scripture bearer was Linda Keller.

Stephanie Beth Andreasen Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Stephanie Beth Andreasen of Avon.

Stephanie passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at the age of 55 surrounded by her family at her home overlooking Upper Spunk Lake. Rev. Gregory Miller, O.S.B. will officiate and the burial will be in the parish cemetery. Fern Hanson, 58 year old resident of Swanville died Tuesday, July 17 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A funeral service will be held on Saturday. July 28 at 11:00 A.M. at Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls. A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 28 at the funeral home.

Fern Marie Nelson was born October 29, 1959 in Grand Rapids to the late John and Ellen Marie Nelson. She grew up and attended school in Grand Rapids graduating with the class of 1976. She was united in marriage to Kevin Hanson on July 7, 1984 in Grand Rapids. The couple made their home in Grand Rapids for a short time before moving to Central Minnesota.

Fern worked various jobs through temporary services; she worked for Big Rock Sports in Sauk Rapids for 11 years. Fern enjoyed fishing, camping, games on her phone, Smurfs, Tweety Bird, trolls, collecting Coca-Cola glasses. She treasured her time spent with her family and three cats. Her dream was to own a yellow

St. Benedict’s on August 27, 1983. Stephanie provided daycare while raising her own children and then worked for the Avon Post Office for almost 20 years. She was a very social person and loved the community of Avon. Stephanie lived her life caring for those within it. She loved to have fun, play golf, volleyball, cards and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends. Stephanie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She welcomed everyone that entered into her life with open arms. She will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.

Survivors include husband, Michael Andreasen of Avon; children, Kate (Nick) Coveney of Foxboro, MA and Scott (Ali) Andreasen of Avon; grandchildren, Ben Andreasen, Jack Andreasen; father, William Blonigan Sr. of Avon; and brothers and sister, Jeff Blonigan, David Blonigan, James Blonigan, and Lynda (Travis) Westling.

Stephanie was preceded in death by her mother, Carolyn Blonigan; brothers, Steven Blonigan and William Blonigan Jr.; nephew, Michael Blonigan.

Alma E. Herges, age 94, of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Alma Elizabeth Brickweg was born February 19, 1924 in Melrose, Minnesota to Frank and Mary (Altendahl) Brickweg.

On September 3, 1946 she was united in marriage to Eugene “Red” Herges at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Prior to her marriage, Alma worked at REA. She raised her family and when the last child went to school, she returned to work at Kraft Foods. In her younger years, Alma was an avid bowler. She was a very competitive person, especially when it came to playing cards. She was very active in volunteering at Pine Villa and lead many rosaries there.

Her love of quilting was shown by the many quilts she made for her family.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa, Christian Mothers, SCORE, and a member of the Big Birch Lake Association where she served as treasurer for many years. She also served as secretary for Millwood Township. Alma loved her family, relatives, friends, her pets, music, and relaxing at her home on Big Birch Lake. Most of all, she loved her husband and best friend of 66 years, Red. On Saturday July 14th the Holdingford FFA Alumni held their 5th Annual Tractor Drive and Blessing. A total of 44 tractors gathered at the Holdingford High School parking lot for a blessings by Father Greg Mastey and then traveled to Elmdale where they enjoyed a meal at the Community Center before returning to Holdingford.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve wrecked my car and my insurance company wants to total and take it from me. If I do that I’ll have to spend another $2000 to $3000 to get something comparable. I also need to get a school car for my son.

My budget was $2000 for that until the collision occurred. They tell me I can buy my car back as is for $3000 and it needs about $3000 in repairs and I’m thinking about doing that and using it for my son’s first car. What should I do?

If not, then it is imperative that you have one look at the car and get an idea of just how much it will take to be roadworthy and safe for your child. If you have a budget of $3000 and spend it all and you haven’t even driven the vehicle, what’s to say that it doesn’t need $3000 in repairs just to make it roadworthy? It may not need a thing but with over 200k chances are likely that it will need something.

Auctions can be fun and a place to get a great deal but they also have been the source of a lot of disappointment when someone finds a deal that turns out to be not so good. On any used purchase, a title history check, and a used car inspection is a very good idea. These two things have saved many people a lot of heartache and money. If you can inspect the vehicle completely you can estimate anticipated repair costs.

New laws hit the books on Aug. 1 An array of new laws takes effect on Aug. 1. They cover topics ranging from transporting agricultural products to exemptions for day care providers. I will give a brief description of several of these changes in statute, and if anyone wants more detail on any of them, or would like a more complete listing, they could call my office at (651) 296-4317.

The definition of “harvest season” has been expanded from nine months to 12 months to give an hours of service exemption to those engaged in the intrastate transportation of agricultural commodities and farm supplies within a 150-mile radius. This law change also has the effect of applying a federal exemption from hours of service rules that govern interstate movement of ag commodities and farm supplies.

A new law will require residential contractors and insurance adjusters to provide consumers with written notification in their initial home repair estimate that they cannot cover any part of the insurance deductible. Current law already says they can’t build that cost into the estimate, but now that prohibition in statute must be put in writing in that initial estimate.

An addition to current statute adds provisions to what should be included in motor vehicle service contracts.

Minnesota now joins 30 other states in conforming its law to what should be included in roadside repairs.

In what’s billed as senior consumer protection, The Safe Seniors Act will give broker dealers and investment advisors the authority to report suspected financial exploitation of seniors to the Dept. of Commerce or the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center. Those

who report abuse will have protection from civil and administrative liability.

This new law will allow seniors’ accounts to be frozen or have disbursements delayed if those advisors believe financial exploitation has occurred or will occur.

Minnesota’s law pertaining to the blending of biodiesel was updated this past session. In a bill I carried, the exemption for number one diesel fuel, which was set to expire, was made permanent. It also provides for a “ramp-up” period from April 1 to April 15 when the blending of diesel will increase from 10 percent to 20 percent.

Other legislation passed during the last session provides for a so-called bill of rights that will ensure siblings in foster care have the right to visit each other.

Another change in law says that unmarried parents will now receive the same rights as divorced couples in the child custody process.

In child support law, a court currently can modify an arrangement’s terms if it’s determined to be “unreasonable or unfair.” A new law that takes effect next month flips legal presumption so any modification in child support law will be presumed to be a substantial change in circumstances in child support orders.

And child care providers will no longer have to publicly post the correction orders handed down from the Dept. of Human Services. These orders are already posted on-line so it was deemed duplicative to also post them on-site.

In addition, a new law exempts certain child care providers from the Positive Support Strategies Rule. This exemption pertains to those providers who deal with persons having developmental disabilities or related conditions.

Another busy week for summer celebrations and county fairs in our area.

M. Schwieters, age 100, died peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Lorraine Magdalene Wander was born February 1, 1918 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Michael and Theresa (Athmann) Wander.

She attended Country School in Spring Hill through the 8th grade. Lorraine married Casper Schwieters on October 1, 1941 at St.

She worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose for 10 years.

Lorraine enjoyed playing cards, listening to the Minnesota Twins, knitting, quilting, embroidering, and making rosaries. She has embroidered many dish towels and made hundreds of rosaries over the years.

Lorraine was a great homemaker and loved spending time with her family.

Lorraine was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Christian Women.

Survivors include her sons, Daniel (Doreen) Schwieters of Spring Hill and Chuck (Beatrice) Schwieters of Melrose; four grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; sister, Monica Barten; sisterin-law, Jeanette Wander; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Casper Schwieters on May 5, 1968; parents, Michael and Theresa Wander; brothers, Alfred, Edwin, Ray, Al, and Christ Wander; and sisters, Eleanor Winter and Anna Mae Lensing.

Benjamin Heller has been named to the Grinnell College Dean’s List for the spring semester 2018. Heller is one of 286 students honored for outstanding academic achievement by Grinnell College. To make the Dean’s List, students must have a grade point average of 3.75 or above.

Heller is the child of Dr. Patrick J. Heller and Ms. Juliann R. Kriege Heller of Grey Eagle, MN. ----------------------------------------Emily Jolkovsky of Avon graduated after majoring in art and visual culture and philosophy and minoring in physics at Bates. Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Why do you think all debt is bad? Aren’t some kinds of debt, like a mortgage or student loans, good?

-Nathan Dear Nathan, It sounds like you’re letting me know you think some kinds of debt are okay, instead of really asking for my opinion. When you ask a question that’s really a statement, it’s called a passive aggressive question. That’s okay. You and I will now argue as best we can in a newspaper column.

It’s not necessarily a question of what I think. I’m really just the aggregator of information we’ve gathered while walking with people through their financial issues. I’ve worked with tens of thousands of folks over nearly 30 years, everyone from billionaires and millionaires to broke people, and those in between. In the process, we’ve collected a lot of data through formal research projects — I’m talking about a huge stockpile of statistics, facts, and figures. And all that data shows debt is the biggest roadblock between people and wealth. I’m also a Christian. Having read the bible, and what it says about money, I can tell you there’s not one place where it says debt is a good idea.

So, all that information leads me to one conclusion. Debt is not a positive thing. The only kind of debt I don’t beat people up over is mortgage debt, as long as it’s a 15-year, fixed rate loan. Houses are wildly expensive, and I understand that most people can’t save up to buy a home with cash in a reasonable amount of time. Still, that doesn’t make mortgage debt a good thing.

-Dave Dear Dave, I owe $18,000 on my only car, and the payments are killing me. I’m also upside down on the vehicle by about $4,000. I’m 31, and I’ve got exactly $18,000 in my 401(k). Should I cash it in to pay off the car?

-Monty Dear Monty, If you use your 401(k) they’ll charge you a 10 percent penalty, plus your tax rate. That means you’ll probably lose anywhere from 25 to 50 percent to the government. I don’t know about you, but I think they already get too much of our money.

I love the fact that you want to get rid of your car payment, but I don’t want you to cash out your retirement plan to make it happen. If you can pay off the car in 18 months or less, I’d advise living on a strict, written budget, and throwing as much money as possible toward the car debt until it’s out of your life forever.

If it would take longer than 18 months to pay it off, I’d get rid of the car. To do this, you’d have to sell it for as much as you can get, then go to a local credit union for a small loan to cover the difference. If it’s your only car, you’d need to ask for an extra $2,000 to $3,000 to buy a little beater to drive until you can save up and get into something better.

I hate all kinds of debt, Monty. But being $5,000 to $6,000 in the hole is a lot better than having $18,000 in debt hanging over your head!

July 12, 2018: Todd County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of mailboxes being vandalized in the southern portion of Todd County. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office at 320-732-2157.

July 13, 2018: At 10:51 there was a call of an illegal garbage dumping complaint on Indigo Drive north of 270th St. in Little Elk TWP Sect 35. The reporting party witnessed 47 year old Daryl Breden, Randall, MN, dumping multiple items on the roadway and in the ditch. The witness then followed the vehicle which led Morrison County Deputies to locate Breden. Breden was cited and the report has been forwarded to the Todd County Attorney’s Office for review. Morrison County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.

July 17, 2018: At 13:34 took a report of a one vehicle accident on 220th Street on the south edge of Lake Charlotte. The Long Prairie Fire and Rescue, Long Prairie Ambulance Service, Long Prairie Police Department and Todd County Sheriff’s Investigator responded and the driver of the vehicle Veronica Monti age 53 of Long Prairie needing extraction from the vehicle and then taken to Long Prairie Hospital with none life threatening injuries to her self. The vehicle Monti was operating left the road and sustained moderate damage to it after hitting a driveway approach and a power pole. The accident is currently under investigation by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

July 19, 2018: At 08:46 received a report of a damage to property at the St Joseph’s Catholic Church in the City of Grey Eagle.

A window on the east side of the church had been broken. The incident happened sometime between July 14th and 16th. Anyone with information about this activity is encouraged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

July 19, 2018: At 18:32 Claire Rice (73) of rural Long Prairie reported the theft of a 4 person boating tube from his residence on Lake Charlotte. The theft occurred between 7/12/18 and 7/16/18.

July 21, 2018: At 07:02 received a call of a vehicle in the ditch on County 13 near 184th St. in Burnhamville TWP Sect 17. 19 year old Eric Koetter, rural Swanville, was eastbound on County 13 when he went of the road on the right side. The truck rolled over a few times.

Eric was not injured and the truck was a total loss. The incident is still under investigation and will be forwarded to the Todd County At-

July 21, 2018: At 11:52 received a call of a two vehicle property damage accident that occurred at the intersection of State 27 and County 31. 53 year old Jessica Schmiesing, Thief River Falls, was southbound on County 31. As Schmiesing went south through the intersection across State 27, she struck 36 year old Tracy Scherping, rural Long Prairie, who was traveling east on State 27. Schmiesing and her passenger were not injured and her Toyota SUV received minor damage to the drivers side front. Scherping and her two passengers were not injured and her Ford Sedan received minor damage to the drivers side rear.

July 22, 2018: At 13:15 a juvenile male was traveling east on 170th st near 235th Ave., Long Prairie when he lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and rolled. The vehicle, 2003 Mazda 6, sustained damage in the crash.

The driver sustained no significant injuries.

A Change in the DARE Program

By Stearns County Sheriff The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has been involved in teaching the DARE curriculum in local schools for well over two decades.

Over the course of the last year, we have discussed whether or not this is still the best area for the Sheriff’s Office to work with the schools on or if some other partnership would be better.

Early this Spring, the Holdingford School District contacted us regarding the potential of having a full-time or part-time School Resource Officer in their buildings. In May, a proposal was submitted to the Holdingford School District covering both options. The Holdingford School Board asked their school administration to explore the part-time SRO position with our Office. We have since made the decision to discontinue our involvement with the DARE program and have the DARE Officer, Deputy Eric Schultz, change the focus of the program to be more focused on the Resource Officer model.

He will be assigned to the Holdingford School District on a half-time basis. He will continue to provide services and contact with the five small schools in our jurisdiction; St. Augusta, Pearl Lake-Marty, Greenwald, Luxemburg and Freeport. We have notified our partner agencies and their Chiefs of Police as well as the affected schools regarding this change.

We stand ready to assist our partner agencies in either teaching DARE themselves or developing an alternative program. This is a big change for everyone involved; schools, parents, law enforcement and most importantly past and future students. Every change brings the potential for opportunity. The Sheriff’s Office has the opportunity to focus more on a small group of schools to enhance our relationship and focus a bit more on school safety. Our local partners have the opportunity to further develop and enhance the presence they already have in their schools. We thank everyone for their support of the Sheriff’s Office and the DARE program.

Take back your time this summer

By Christy Wright Being a summer baby, I love the warm weather months. I love cookouts and picnics, vacations, and being outside as much as possible. Everyone is in a better mood, and it seems like there are endless fun things to do and get into.

During the summer season, many of us have dreams and plans for what we’d like to do. But if we’re not careful, it’s easy to go from school-year-crazy to summer-crazy, and we end up just shifting from one version of busy to another.

Instead of letting your summer get away from you, try these four tips to take back your time, so that you can make the most of it this summer at home and at work.

Identify your priorities: Before each month begins, be proactive and arrange your calendar to reflect what’s important to you. If that means visiting your aging parents three states away, then put them at the top of your list — even if your kids have to miss a soccer game or two. When you manage your commitments, they stop managing you.

Schedule leisure time: When you finish everything else, then you’ll spend time reading, exercising, and playing with your kids, right? But that never happens! Go ahead and schedule some leisure time into your calendar.

This will help to ensure these important parts of your life receive plenty of time as well.

Protect your schedule: Even if you start off your week with the best of intentions, things will inevitably come up. You’ll get requests from work, invitations from friends, and distractions from every corner of your life. It’s vital that you protect your schedule.

Practice saying no to last-minute requests and invitations that conflict with your priorities.
