Mind your Ps and Qs -By Harvey Mackay When someone cautions you to mind your Ps and Qs, they’re using an age-old expression to mind your manners, be on your best behavior and watch what you are doing. The precise origin is debatable, but it all boils down to the same thing: Don’t mess up.

I was thinking about what those Ps and Qs might be in the business world, and here are several thoughts I’d like to share with you.

Persistence. Much of what makes people successful is persistence. Instead of giving myself reasons why I can’t, I give myself reasons why I can. When you study truly successful people, you’ll notice that they made plenty of mistakes, but when they got knocked down, they kept getting up … and up … and up.

Persuasion. Simply said, it doesn’t matter who has the best ideas or the most workable plans or the nicest smile. It all comes down to persuasion. Who can get their point across and bring others over to their side? Negotiating means we both get some of what we want. But persuasion means you get what I want, and you thank me for giving it to you. I’m not asking you to give anything up, just to get a different, and more advantageous, result.

Perfection. Practice makes perfect – not true. You have to add one word. Perfect practice makes perfect. It doesn’t matter whether you are practicing a presentation or a golf swing, you want to improve your performance, not repeating practice mistakes.

Patience. Don’t forget to practice patience. Concentrate on incremental progress.

Overnight sensations and blockbuster victories are usually the result of months or years of quiet effort. Establishing a habit of slow but steady success will build confidence and

minimize risk. We live in a world where we are used to getting things quickly. This impatient attitude can cause a lot of harm – unproductive time, stress, poor decisions and more.

Planning. People don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan. Work out a general plan for achieving each goal over the long term. For instance, if you want a high-level position in your organization, your plan might include earning one or two intermediate promotions, getting additional training or volunteering for specific important assignments. Each phase in your plan is a goal in itself. Approach each interim goal methodically and follow a consistent process for completing each one.

Passion. Passion is at the top of the list of the skills you need to excel in any other profession. If you don’t have a deep-down, intense, burning desire for what you are doing, there’s no way you’ll be able to work the long, hard hours it takes to become successful.

Potential. Far too many people exist in a world of “what is” rather than giving thought or applying their energies to “what can be.”

The undeveloped piece of property with the greatest potential is still between the ears.

Many people fail to succeed because they don’t know what they want or they don’t want it in the worst way. In other words, they aren’t willing to work for it. They don’t want to pay the price.

People. You have to love people to be a good networker. Dale Carnegie probably summed it up best: “You can make more friends in two months by becoming really interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

Pride. Take pride in your company. Take pride in your employees. Take pride in your

products. But check your personal pride at the door. Pride is the stone over which many people stumble.

Quality. Good enough never is. Quality is a mindset. It must be an obsession, part of a company’s culture. Quality can never be sacrificed if you want to keep your customers satisfied.

Questions. Ask the right questions to get the best answers. Open-ended questions require a more expansive response than a yes or no, or a simple statement of fact.

They create a conversational tone and avoid sounding like an interrogation. Question every angle, motive and outcome.

Quit. Quit complaining. Quit dragging your feet. Quit talking yourself out of what could be a fabulous opportunity because you are afraid to take the risk. Quit being afraid of succeeding.

Quantify. Your goals must be measurable, so it’s necessary to have a standard to hold them to. You can’t keep track of your progress if you don’t know where you want to go.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Skipping School

Today, one of the primary subjects of discussion involves local schools. The conversations include whether there will be inschool classes this fall, will the kids be required to give personal information such as have you had the Covid-19 shots and if masks will be required for classes or sporting participation. All of these questions will be answered by the school officials by the start of the school year. These concerns are new when compared to educational history.

My Mother’s dad told some stories about local school rules when he was a kid in the early 1900’s. He attended a country school that usually had an enrollment of 25 to 30 students.

Most of the farm work at that time was done with rather primitive tools and required many hours to complete. If there was something that needed to be done on the farm, you didn’t go to school that day. His school required a student to attend school 30 days each year so that you could pass to the next grade. He mentioned that in spring you had to go to school every day to get your 30 days counted. The kids at that time received most of their education in their own world by work, community and home life. The result was that the kids learned to think, act and believe as their surroundings taught them. The school was used to teach the 3 R’s, but some of these tools were also taught at home. At that time school was frequently not the primary concern for kids or parents.

Moving ahead to the middle 1900’s, we see more concern for school attendance, however there continued to be absences for special work needs such as silo filling or corn picking. A specific case was related to me, which included helping a local potato farmer.

Potatoes at that time were picked by hand and due to the large amount of potatoes, many ambitious strong backs were needed. Evidently a group of young guys were needed on Monday which made them absent from school. They continued picking potatoes on Tuesday and Wednesday. While they were eating their noon meal on Wednesday, the phone rang. It was

the School Principal demanding that the kids get back to school. After further discussion it was decided that most of the potatoes would be picked by sundown on Wednesday, so they could come back to school on Thursday.

Evidently this potato picking was an every fall occurrence, so the Principal knew exactly where to call.

Deer, duck and pheasant hunting created another reason to skip school. As one looks back, it is obvious that the experience and excitement of the hunt created a more lasting memory than attending another day at school.

Although the guys were not at school, they did have a full day of learning about their surroundings. They probably became more able to understand and able to appreciate the guys with whom they were hunting. A valuable experience to help understand and communicate with others in future years.

Today schools are no longer simply needed to teach the 3 R’s, but they are expected to provide a majority of the students’ social life. They now supply the recreational needs, drivers training and nutritional needs of the students.

There is a problem in this country caused by eating too much fast food, along with too many snack foods. We need what was at one time called Home Ec, so the knowledge of healthy food preparation and good choices will make us more healthy. The Ec part also teaches better use of our money to make us better financially.

Last week Lori and I were in South Dakota remodeling our daughter and her husband’s bathroom. The very first day on the job, I got a sliver in my left thumb. I did not even know it until the end of the day, but when evening came, I was in a lot or pain. The thumb throbbed all night. I worked with it all the next day, and that evening, after supper I soaked it and Lori performed minor surgery on my thumb to remove a ridiculously small sliver.

Just like that little sliver in my thumb, sin can cause so much pain and suffering, even death. Gregory D. “Greg” Lehner, age 73 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A celebration of life was held Wednesday, July 21 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Gregory Dean Lehner was born January 26, 1948 in Albany, Minnesota to Alois and Dorothy (Klug) Lehner. He graduated from Albany High School and furthered his education at a barber school. Greg worked as a barber in Elbow Lake. He was united in

Rose was born October 7, 1929 in Lake Henry, Minnesota to John and Gertrude (Hopfer) Jaeger, Jr. She married Richard J. Bertram on August 26, 1952 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Lake Henry. Five children were born to this union. The couple farmed near Spring Hill until their retirement. Rose was a member of St. Michael’s Parish and St. Ann’s Christian Women.

It is protocol of the United States Navy to return home all of the remains of soldiers who died in action at Pearl Harbor and elsewhere, so it is with Elmer. On July 29, 2017, Elmer was given a full military funeral with honors.

Through DNA testing, is has been determined that more of his remains have been identified.

A graveside service to lay his final remains at rest will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Highland Cemetery in Holdingford, Minnesota. All are welcome to attend to bestow honors to F1c Elmer Kerestes with the American Legion Post 211, VFW Post 5160, and prayers by Pastor Bobbi Bell.

F u n e r a l services for LeRoy Chapin, age 82 of Long Prairie, currently of Osakis passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 13 at the Galeon in Osakis.

Services are Friday, July 23 at 11:00 am at the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie with Rev. Ethan Fearing officiating. Musicians are Ruth Zinter and Dana Hetland. Interment is at the Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie, MN with the military honors provided by the Long Prairie Combined Honor Guard and the U S Navy Honor Guard. A gathering time will begin at the church on Friday starting at 10 am.

LeRoy Chapin, age 82 formerly of Long Prairie, currently of Osakis passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 13 near the Galeon in Osakis where he was a resident.

On September 23, 1938 a baby boy was born to Robert and Clara (Steffen) Chapin in Osakis, MN. He grew up in Osakis and attended Osakis High School. He married his sweetheart, Evelyn Platt on September 17, 1955. LeRoy served his country in the US

Navy, being honorably discharged in October of 1961. He returned home and took a job as a pressman for a publishing company in Long Prairie called Hart Press. He worked there faithfully for over forty-one years, advancing to become a floor supervisor, seeing the company grow and change to become Banta Corp and finally, R R Donnelley & Sons. LeRoy was able to retire in 1996 and enjoyed the chance to pursue his many hobbies and interests.

He and Evelyn were especially excited to be able to travel and spend time during the winter months in south Texas. LeRoy was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie and belonged to the Long Prairie American Legion. He loved to get outdoors and spent many hours hunting and fishing.

During the wintertime he was active with the Prairie Snow Dogs Snowmobiling Club. He loved to ride and enjoyed giving his grandkids rides. He was a devoted Dad and Grandpa who valued his family and friendships. He believed in hard work and an honest day’s wage and instilled these values in his children.

LeRoy will live on in the hearts of his children, Robert ‘Bob’ (Tammie) Chapin of Osakis, Ron (Lisa) Chapin of Long Prairie, Patty Chapin of Alexandria; 8 grandchildren, Jesse, Jack, Stacey, Aaron, Kelly, Samantha, Christian and Maggie; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn in 2018, a son, Jack Chapin and a sister, Ramona Hagen.

With each passing day of high temps and no rain, the situation for farmers and others involved in agriculture gets a little worse. It seems that we have been short of rain nearly all spring and summer, and that, combined with readings in the 90s, has left us precariously short of soil moisture. The timing couldn’t be worse, with corn heading into its critical pollination stage and soybeans setting pods. Now is when these crops have their highest water need, and to be this dry now is surely taking a toll.

Those who milk cows or raise beef cattle are facing the most immediate shortfall. Hay crops have been less than average this summer, and pastures, for the most part, have turned brown and stopped growing. That leaves producers with few options other than selling off parts of their herds or buying what’s going to be very expensive hay this fall and winter. Already sales barns across the Upper Midwest are seeing more cattle coming to market as farmers try to reduce their herds to a size they can maintain.

Visited with a rancher from South Dakota who won’t have any hay to put up this year, but he hopes to have enough left from last year to carry him through. Many others aren’t that fortunate.

In the area where I live, in the middle of Pope County just south of Lake Minnewaska, the rains have been few and far between. The month of May saw three-quarters of an inch, followed by 1.6 inches in June. July has continued the trend of being hot and dry, with less than a half inch of precipitation. Sloughs that I have never seen dry in my nearly 50 years of farming are now without a trace of water. It’s amazing that most fields are still green, but they are living on borrowed time. Subsoil moisture reserves are depleted or nearly so and, without rain soon, those fields will rapidly go downhill.

CRP acres to emergency haying and grazing.

In our part of the state, that has happened, but with one caveat. Those acres are now eligible for grazing, but until the nesting season ends Aug. 1, haying those areas is not allowed. I have urged Ag. Commissioner Thom Peterson to get those acres opened to haying immediately, and he has raised the issue with the feds in Washington. But so far, that has not happened, and it will soon be August and a moot point. By that time, the feed value of those grasses will be greatly diminished, almost to the point of chewing on sticks.

The state of Minnesota has opened up the Rural Finance Authority to authorize loans to farmers living in areas of severe or extreme drought. The interest rate will be 0% on the state portion of loans taken out through local banks. There is also discussion of opening up some state-controlled land to haying or grazing, such as RIM or DNR lands or land owned by conservation groups.

It certainly is stressful. I try to avoid driving around the neighborhood in the middle of the afternoon, because that’s when crops look their worst. The corn leaves are rolled up, and the bottom leaves are starting to “fire” or turn brown. It’s hard to witness, just watching those crops suffering from this lack of moisture. And it’s equally hard coming to grips with the fact there is nothing we can do. It’s up to Mother Nature and the good Lord. We continue praying for meaningful rain, knowing that He has taken care of us before, and He will again.

Brian and Naomi Ruegemer of Ward Springs are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Indi Rose Ruegemer, born on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 2:55 p.m. at the CentraCare Health-Melrose Hospital Indi weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 21 inches long.

She has a big brother Corbin, 7 years old and big sister Rehn, 4 years old, both at home.

By Steve Borgerding The camp rouser song states, “Many Point Scout Camp. That’s the place to be. It’s where the best of Scouting is, and that’s the place for me.” Six Boy Scouts of Melrose Troop 68 discovered how true those words are when they spent the week of July 4th at the camp and had a great time.

The Scouts were kept very busy at camp.

In the morning they would work on advancement and earn merit badges. In the afternoon they participated in troop activities around the camp. All program areas were open in the evening so the Scouts were able to choose how they wished to spend their time.

The beach and aquatramp were very popular during the hot days. The two climbing towers were also a favorite of the Scouts. A visit to the camp’s museum and 100 foot high

fire tower, followed by a round of disc golf, kept the troop busy one afternoon.

Other activities included the archery, rifle, and shotgun ranges, nine square and Gaga ball games, DELTA team building challenges, and the favorite greased watermelon competition.

Three of the older Scouts were able to participate in the camp’s ATV program one afternoon.

Attending the camp were Troop 68 members Austin Engelmeyer, Emmett Massmann, Ethan Zink, Logan Rue, Isaiah Gilk, and Noah Zink. Adult leaders were assistant scoutmaster Steve Gilk and committee member Matthew Zink. Steve Borgerding also attended for a few days.

The Scouts may have had a fantastic time while at camp but they were ready to return home on Saturday and relax for the rest of the weekend.

The Swan River Water Trail Committee held their 1st annual Swan Race on July 11th on the Todd/Morrison County Bridge just outside of Swanville. 1000 rubber swans were released about 200 feet up river and floated to the finish line. The Swan River Water Trail starts at the Pillsbury beach/dam and winds though woods, pastures and meadows through Todd and Morrison County. You can canoe, kayak or tube. There are currently three stop/starting places, Pillsbury, Highway 28 and County Road 12 (between Swanville and Sobieski. The Committee is working on clearing the water trail all the way to Sobieski and eventually to the Mississippi. Submitted by Sandy Lange.

Personally, I recommend investing in good, growth stock mutual funds and real estate paid for with cash. Dear Motor Medics, I have a Nissan Titan and it has a ticking noise in the engine. It has had this for about a year and it doesn’t seem to get any louder, but it makes me nervous about taking it on trips far from home. When I have my engine oil changed my shop says it’s just lifters and they probably are noisy because I tended to change my engine oil every 10k miles, I know, that’s too long between changes. I recently put in an additive that cleans the engine oil system and the noise stopped for two weeks then came back. Should I try two cans at the same time?

- Carry in Hills, Minnesota Dear Carry, NO! That’s the best way we can answer that last question. Never use an additive in a way not directed by the manufacturer of said product or you risk permanent damage. Additives have their place and if used as directed sometimes can fix a problem and save you a ton of money, but they are also some of the most abused products out there. With your extended oil changes, you probably clogged up some oil passages and using the cleaner helped restore them. Most of those cleaners are meant to be installed, then the engine oil changed within a few minutes of running. If that works then you may be able to repeat every 1000k miles for a few months and you may save the engine.

Check Engine lights, ABS lights and Low Tire lights are some of the most annoying things on a car, but they all are there for a reason. They either are trying to save your life or the cars life. In the case of a low tire light it is the former. Low tire warning systems were made mandatory by the government for safety a while back due to so many accidents caused by tire failure from under inflation. Swanville City • June 8, 2021 The following members were present for the public hearing: Mayor Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Jim Molitor. Also present: City Engineer, Clif Allen, no residents present for Public Hearing.

The Public Hearing was opened at 6:45 pm. Mayor Lange then turned the hearing over to City Engineer, Clif Allen who was present to inform the public on the water tower improvements project and loan process, this loan will be through USDA Rural Development.

Allen explained the USDA Program and proposed cost and financing. The Hearing was then closed.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 8, 2021.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej and Jim Molitor. Also present: City Engineer, Clif Allen.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, May 4, 2021 were reviewed. A motion was made by John Dragseth to approve the minutes. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, City Engineer, explained to the council the DEED loan of $600,000.00 which was applied for did not get approved this year, but will be reapplied for next year. Different plans were discussed for the water tower, it was then decided to have a water tower planning session. On Tuesday June 22, 2021 at noon.

The council will get together with Allen to discuss the different proposals for the tower project.

Paul Dzieweczynski applied for a land use permit to put a culvert and driveway in on his property on 3 Brentwood circle. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to give the land permit to Dzieweczynski.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The numbers of vehicles on a property were discussed and was then decided since the mayor is going over the present ordinances, the wording will be changed in the rough draft of this ordinance and have council and the attorney’s approval before the ordinance will be accepted.

Lake Pepin will have an ordinance stating 3 day stay only but can register with the City Clerk for permission to stay up for an up to stay 7-day permit. This will also be in the new ordinances.

It was decided to allow people who are interested in buying a park bench and have a memorial plague on the bench be installed in the park. This will have to be brought to the City Clerk for approval and as to where the bench will be placed.

Council members in attendance were Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guests Jon Newberg, Peg Newberg, Chris Browen, Bryan Bye, Rhonda Johnson and Brad Johnson.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application for Grey Eagle Housing to pave the north parking lot and to widen the west driveway into the parking lot by ten feet. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application for Brian Hollenkamp to extend his driveway on the south side by fourteen feet from the road and along the south side of the garage for a total of approximately seventy eight feet. Minutes from the June 7, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

-It would take 2.1 miles of line to come through town, which is 13,000 feet, the cost would be $85,000 in revenue just to run the line –They would need 40 houses to commit to converting.

- the breakdown per household or business is $2,000 – this cost does not include converting your appliances to natural gas. So until we can get more houses or businesses in town to commit, Greater Gas will not even take our calls.

Public Notice: Our Board Meeting in August will be held on August 9, 2021; this is the second Monday in August, please mark your calendars of this change.

The council instructed that the bathrooms at the park be opened up and the water turned back on.

The Council would like to work on a checklist and procedures for building permit applications.

The Council would like a list of committee duties and how this was handled in the past.

The Council discussed the vacant council seat.

The seat would be by appointment of the City Council until the next election with the remaining two years being put on the ballot.
