What is really lost is perspective.

Just as there are two (or more) sides to every story, there are plenty of different ideas on how to get things done. No one person has a corner on that market.

A lot depends on who is doing the looking. Consider the story of three people of different occupations as they looked at the Grand Canyon: The priest said, “What a glory of God!” The geologist said, “What a wonder of science!”

The cowboy said, “What an awful place to lose a horse!”

How we approach an issue often colors our thinking about the result we wish to achieve. What we want may not line up with the next person’s desired outcome. Our motives are not wrong, just very different. We need to respect each other’s views and consider that our own may not be the only one with real merit.

Sure, that’s easier said than done.

But it can be done! And some of the most creative and powerful people in the world have offered very helpful sugges-

tions for expanding our perspective so that we can truly work together.

For example, Thomas Watson, Jr., the late chairman of IBM, shared some wisdom from his father, Thomas Watson, Sr., founder of the company: “Father was fond of saying that everybody, from time to time, should take a step back and watch himself go by.”

If you did that, would you like what you saw? Be honest!

Will Rogers, a uniquely American humorist known for his homespun wisdom and keen wit, summed up perspective this way: “You must never disagree with a man while you are facing him. Go around behind him and look the same way he is looking and you will see that things look different from what they do when you’re facing him. Look over his shoulder and get his viewpoint, then go back and face him and you will have a different idea.”

Note that both of these examples are from an era gone by, when folks seemed to be kinder and less contentious. We haven’t necessarily improved our society since then -- in fact, I would contend that we’ve gotten meaner. How does that seem to be working?

Perspective is critical in competitive situations. If you can’t see solutions from a competitor’s point of view, you can’t compete. How will you know what they are doing better than, different from, or instead of you? Who are they appealing to with their approach? How are their customers responding?

I love to ask customers what their ideal product would be. What would their ideal supplier do differently? More than once I have been stunned at the sim-

plicity of the solutions. Those questions open up a new line of communication and trust which benefit both sides. Don’t just file away that information -- use your new perspective to prepare for your next customer and competitor.

Whatever you do, don’t fall into the trap of dismissing issues with statements like “it’s all just a matter of perspective.”

That is too often another way of saying that the other person’s perspective is not as important as yours.

Have you heard about the aging race horse that tried and tried but just couldn’t run fast enough to win any races, or even finish in the money? His impatient owner told the jockey, “Either that horse wins some money in today’s race or his next assignment is going to be pulling a milk wagon.”

The jockey loved the horse and did everything he could to spur the horse on. He muttered sweet words to him as they went around the first turn. And on the backstretch, he shouted loud words of encouragement. But as the horse faltered in the stretch, the jockey started laying on the whip with terrible force.

At this, the horse turned his head to the jockey and said, “Hey, man, take it easy on that whip. I’ve got to get up and go to work in the morning.”

Mackay’s Moral: The difference between a horse’s front end and back end is a matter of perspective.

Wayne VanHeel proudly announces the engagement of his daughter, Melissa VanHeel, to Terry Rohde, son of Mike Rohde and Linda Unger.

Melissa is a 2001 graduate of Albany High School. She attended St. Cloud State University and graduated in 2005 with a BES in Physical Education. She also attended Minnesota School of Business for massage therapy and graduated in 2006. She is currently employed at Holdingford Public Schools.

Obituaries Alyce E. Bacon

Alyce E. Bacon, 101 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN, formerly of the Burtrum-Grey Eagle area, passed away Monday (June 6) at the Long Prairie Nursing Home. Memorial services will be held from 11-2 P.M. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Senior Citizen Center in Grey Eagle, MN. Burial will be at 2:30 P.M. in the Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Arrangements are with the ShelleyGibson Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Alyce was born September 24, 1909 in Dresden, ND to the late John and Augusta (Filbrandt) Rueger. Alyce graduated from North Dakota State Teaching College with a professional second grade teaching certificate for life on December 21, 1936.

Alyce taught in one of the North Dakota schools and also for the Grey Eagle School District. When she was teaching in North Dakota, she met and married Edmund Messerich. The couple moved to the Burtrum/Grey Eagle area. To this marriage two sons were born, Gary and Ronald Messerich. Edmund Messerich died suddenly of a heart attack in 1943.

On January 17, 1946, Alyce was united in marriage to Donald Bacon. After their retirement, Alyce and Donald enjoyed many winters in McAllen, Texas. The couple were year round residents in Texas from 1990 until Donald passed away on October 24, 1997. Alyce then moved back to Grey Eagle, MN and resided at the Grey Eagle Village View Apartments.

In June, 2006 Alyce moved to Long

Prairie, MN to live with her son, Darrell.

She enjoyed teaching and visiting with family and friends. She loved to sew, any kind of needle work and crafting. Alyce also enjoyed flowers and gardening. She always had a large garden when her family was young and that hobby continued through the years while living at Village View Apartments. For many years, Alyce worked at the Burtrum Bean Bake cooking noodles. She was also a leader in the Burtrum Booster 4-H Club and a member of the Homemaker’s Club.

Alyce is survived by her sons, Gary (Skip) (Alma ‘Cookie’) Messerich of Grey Eagle, MN; Ronald Messerich of Port Aransas. TX; Royce (Diane) Bacon of Milwaukee, WI; Dennis (Sue) Bacon of Long Prairie, MN and Darrell Bacon of Long Prairie, MN; brother, Ivan Rueger of Langdon, ND; 10 grandchildren; 8 greatgrandchildren with one more expected in October, many nieces and nephews.

Alyce was preceded in death by her husbands, Edmund Messerich and Donald Bacon; parents, John and Augusta Rueger; three sisters and a brother.

Viola is survived by her sons Doug (Sharon) Hodel, Cold Spring; and Gene (Joyce) Hodel, Oak Grove, MN; her grand children Kimberly (Tom) Wunderlich, St. Augusta; Michelle Hodel, St. Cloud; Eric (Debbie) Hodel, Blaine; and her great grand children Alissa and Kayla Wunderlich.

She is preceded in death by her parents Adolph and Bertha Leitz, her husband Garfield Hodel who passed away October 4, 1996, and 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

Quentin G. Pauly, 2 year old resident of BurtrumSwanville area, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 as a result of an auto accident.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 15, 2011 at Living Hope Assembly of God Church in Little Falls with Rev. Jon Adams officiating. Burial was at Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville.

Quentin G. Pauly was born on October 23, 2008 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Gabriel Pauly and Sarah Waara.

Quentin enjoyed playing ready-set-go with Nana, swimming and learning how to catch fish at grandma and grandpa Pfeffers.

Where you used to be, there is a hole in the world, your happiest days when you could hang out with big sister, Athenia, and big brother, Xavier just to be COOL. Always making mom and dad wonder what is he up to now. Your short celebration of life broke our hearts, but knowing you are safe in the arms of Jesus will comfort those who love you most.

Lois M. Gunderson, 51 year old resident of Duluth, MN formerly of Upsala, MN went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 16, 2011 when she passed away at Bayshore Care Facility in Duluth, MN. Lois was born March 2, 1960 to Loren and Helen (Johnson) Gunderson. She lived on a dairy farm where she became a fan of John Deere tractors. Lois grew up as a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala and later attended Community Covenant Church of Upsala.

She graduated from Upsala High School with the class of 1978 and went on to Anoka Technical School for their Culinary Baking program. Lois worked as the head baker in the grocery store bakery of Marv’s Red Owl in Annandale, MN. She used her baking talents throughout her life making bars, cakes, cookies and other goodies for gatherings. Lois is perhaps best known for her Chocolate Chip Cookies and caramels. She loved to make buckets full for friends, family, and special occasions.

Lois loved people and found great joy in attending family reunions, parties of all

kinds, and having any chance to socialize with friends and relatives. She charmed her way into the hearts of many with her baking, inquisitive nature and caring spirit. Lois spent the last seven years in Duluth, MN at the TBI Cook Lake House, where she found more people to bake for; she was loved by the staff and had many friends. While living in Duluth she became a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Superior, WI. She worked, through Pathway, as a food service grocery sorter. Lois loved to have visitors and to go out to coffee shops and restaurants.

Lois shared with those around her through her knitting: making dish cloths, scarves, baby-blankets and teaching others to knit.

Lois loved Elvis Presley and collected a vast array of Elvis memorabilia. Lois was very fond of her nieces and nephews. She especially loved being Auntie Lolo to the youngest of the bunch: Jacob and Daniel.

Lois is survived by her father, Loren Gunderson of Upsala; her sister and four brothers, Ruthie Frie and husband Elmer of Upsala, MN; Lee and wife Cheryl of Dawson, MN; Keith (Charlie) and wife Beth, David and wife Patricia, Alan (Fred) and wife Tina, all of Upsala; her Godson and nephew, Jason Gunderson and wife Cristela; eight more nephews: Michael (Melissa) Gunderson, Brad (Terra) Gunderson, Brian (Jenny) Gunderson, Ricky Frie, Karl Gunderson, Derek Bollig, Jacob Gunderson, and Daniel Gunderson; and six nieces: Chantelle Frie, Sara (Mark) Okern, Amy Gunderson, Nicole Frie, Kaitlynn Bollig and Annika Gunderson; as well as five great-nieces and a greatnephew.

On Saturday August 6, the Todd County Livestock Advisory Council invites everyone to drive to the Grey Eagle School parking lot, climb aboard the free shuttle bus to the Jeff and Korinna Rohde Dairy, and then enjoy breakfast and some country hospitality. Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

The message many have been waiting for finally came Thursday morning, the 14th of July, when Governor Dayton announced that he would accept the Legislative proposal to end the state shutdown.

He added three provisions to the settlement which were tentatively accepted by Republican leadership later that same day.

This agreement is a compromise in that no one got everything they wanted.

Republicans held true to their pledge of not raising income taxes, while Dayton received more revenue. The increased spending will be made possible because of an increase in the school-aid shift and HOME OF PIONEER FEEDS

a partial lump sum payment of the tobacco settlement money. The education shift, which currently allows school districts to receive 70 percent of their state aid in the current year and the remaining 30 percent in the year following, would be altered to a 60-40 payment schedule.

While school officials do not like the shift, it is preferable to outright cuts.

The education shift has been used 21 times in prior years and has always been paid back. Most times it has taken several years to re-pay the schools. An additional part of this settlement is a $50 per pupil increase in state payments to help cover additional borrowing expenses. As a result, over-all aid payments to schools will increase if one looks outside the fiscal year, in other words, if the delayed or shifted payments are included.

I’m not a big fan of the education shift because it doesn’t address the structural problem. It allows the state to utilize money designated for the schools to help its own cash flow. It’s a one-time fix and eventually needs to be paid back.

Also a possibility is a bill allowing a state-run casino at Canturbury Downs horse racing track that would designate “racino” proceeds to be used to help buy down the education shift. Estimated

As this is written, details have not been worked out yet, but preliminary plans have Legislators being called back by the Governor early in the week of July 18th. Work on drafting the necessary finance bills would take place the preceding weekend and, once called back, it shouldn’t take us long to debate and vote on the bills. If all goes smoothly, the state could be back in operation by the end of that same week.

My first year of farming was 1976, a drought year, and I promised myself that I would never complain about receiving too much rain. It’s getting difficult to keep that promise this summer as the rain and storms seem to be coming with spring-like regularity. Another three inches fell at our farm last Friday morning, and water was standing all over. A violent wind storm blew through central Minnesota the night of July 10th and left a path of damage in its wake. The area around Sauk Centre was especially hard

hit by the 85 mile per hour straight line winds, and city officials there estimate over 1,000 trees uprooted by the storm.

Damage was also done to surrounding corn fields, which were looking promising as a result of all the heat and moisture we’ve received lately. One farmer north of Melrose told me that a crop scout estimated between 30 and 40 percent of the corn plants in one of his fields were snapped off because of the high winds. Another field in the area between Alexandria and Sauk Centre reportedly suffered even more damage. With the current high price of corn, these losses add up quickly.

Local Municipality Minutes Burnhamville Township June 28, 2011 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held June 28, 2011 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson, Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Ervin Muellner, and Erv Herdering.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 31, 2011 regular meeting. Motion seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4504 through 4514: Rev. $1,134.10, R&B $17,316.54. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motions passed.

Correspondence included an anonymous letter concerning lots in the City of Burtrum. Burnhamville Township has no jurisdiction there so the author should approach the City of Burtrum council with concerns. The DNR sent an informational poster on turtles in Minnesota.

The State of Minnesota sent a letter concerning the state shutdown. The First State Bank of Swanville sent a letter concerning collateral backing.

County P& Z meeting July 7th.

The DNR sent a letter requesting a signed maintenance agreement for the Long Lake Access. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to sign the agreement. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The board heard a concern about ditch grass cutting by the campgrounds on 160th St. The board will have contractors do a second cutting and reshape the ditch by County 102.

Also, in the road report the supervisors will check culverts by Buck Lake where beavers are plugging the culvert, and on 168th St. near 341st Ave. One of the supervisors will paint the center stripe on the refinished Enchanted Loop.

Ditch mowing has started and will continue as needed.

Supervisors are still working on the sign update and weed inspection.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to pass resolution #2011-03 accepting an additional 1,923 feet of Chickadee Drive as a township road.

This resolution corrects resolution #2011-02. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $107,480.69 before tonight’s bills. The report was approved on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on June 28, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Grey Eagle Township July 11, 2011 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, John Young, Mary Ann Primus, Bev Eggerth. Mike Kutter was absent.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Additions to the agenda included Erv Muellner on ditch mowing and Julie Zimmerman on brush removal.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 6, 2011 minutes to the board. John made the motion to approve the minutes as presented. Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Zoning Report: Bev reported two permit requests came in, one for a house and one for an agricultural building. Bev stated that the ordinance updates were ready to publish and record at the county but needed signatures before she could do that.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June.

Claims list included 15 claims for a total of $22,914.70. John made a motion to pay the claims as listed, Ron made the second. Motion carried. Received a letter from the attorney’s office about old files that we could pick up or they would be destroyed. (From 1999) It was decided clerk would pick them up.

Discussion again on having a supervisor mowing the road ditches.

It was determined that we needed a resolution on file that allowed for a supervisor to do work for the township. John made a motion to approve the resolution, second by Ron. Motion carried. The supervisor must then file an affidavit with his claim.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of May 31, 2011: $74,856.74; Checks cleared: 18, $23,005.33; Deposits including interest: $118,637.41; Balance as of June 30, 2011: $170,488.82; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $170,488.82; CD Balance: $41,450.99. Ray made the motion to accept the Treas.Report. John made the second. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: John began the road report with the Big Birch boat landing and tree removal.

Maintenance was required to clear brush from the road right of way, John contacted Hoffman Tree Service to take out the dead trees and branches. After that was done what was left was an overgrown eyesore.

So John asked Hoffman’s Tree Service to come back and clean up the area. (this meant completely remov-

ing the brush that had been left.) The plan is to plant the area with grass so that it can be mowed. The neighboring property owner stated she now has issues with dust, noise and headlights shining in her living room. It has become a privacy issue as well as security issue. She is asking the township to be a good neighbor and replace the bushes with some lilac that are 3 ft. tall planted 3 feet apart along the 140ft open border.

Ray stated that since the bushes were planted by a former property owner on township property maybe the board should grant permission for her to do that. She did not feel it was her responsibility since the township; thru a series of events cut more than was originally planned.

Ron stated he felt that the removal was totally up to the township since it was township property and he would agree to having grass planted and maintained but not planting any shrubs. Ray agreed. If we start planting shrubs we will have to do more of it. John stated he actually had several calls complimenting the township on cleaning up the mess and even one asking if the parking area could be made larger for safety issues in the winter.

The picnic table at the beach needs replacement-John got a quote for $180.00 and checked out some of the local stores. He felt that the quote was in line and would support a local business; he then made a motion to accept the quote for $180.00.

Ray made a second to the motion.

Motion carried. It was determined that the question about spraying on 321st had been done by the company the township hired, however, the spraying was done within the road right-of-way and the township would not be responsible for replacing bushes. A culvert was cleaned out on Ascot road, Arden Drive needed some gravel and John took care of a tree that had fallen on Brakken Road. Ditches have been mowed, sickle mower did well in some areas not so good in others.

May need a second cut with all the rain we have been getting.

Additional agenda items: Erv M. stated he felt that next year the quotes for the ditch mowing should be done in the same form, not one by the hour and one by the job. Ron asked board members to sign road vacating resolution from the April mtg. Ray reported on the weed inspection- he felt it was too hard to figure out who to send letters to when most landowners have some type on weeds. Ray made a motion to do a published notice so that everyone would get the notice, like the county did. Ron made the second.

Motion carried. Clerk will publish notice.

Adjournment: Motion by John to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:25 p.m.

Notice is given this 11th day of July, pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 18.83, subd.1, (2009) that all persons in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota, shall control or eradicate all noxious weeds on land they own, occupy or are required to maintain. The Noxious weeds that need to be controlled or eradicated are: Yellow Starthistle, Grecian Foxglove, Oriental Bittersweet, Purple Loosestrife, Garlic Mustard, Leafy Spurge, Canada Thistle, Musk Thistle, Plumless Thistle, Wild Parsnip, Common Tansy, Spotted Knapweed, Poison Ivy, Common or European Buckthorn and Glossy Buckthorn.

Zen and the Art of Bread Baking for the County Fair -By Saralee Perel

The day before our county fair opens, scores of hopeful contestants stream through the gates carrying handmade items like sweaters, quilts, jams and woodcarvings.

The spirit is one of healthy cooperation and competition. Simply being a part of this 135 year old tradition makes these fair goers shine.

On the other hand, each year my easy-going husband, Bob, turns into an obsessed combat soldier in a bloodthirsty battle to beat everybody else.

“Bob,” I’ve said, “it’s not about winning.”

“Nobody believes that,” he growled, as he painstakingly braided the Rum Raisin Challah. On the counter was a small clump of the dough wrapped in foil. He explained, “This is a traditional Jewish custom. It’s an offering. You’re supposed to bake it with the bread.”

“You’re not Jewish, Bob. Why are you doing it?”

“So I’ll win!”

Bob has the oven on all July. The heat makes us cranky. Once, when I tiptoed behind him, he slammed down the cup of flour. “You were a marriage counselor for 22 years,” he hissed at me, while kneading his 5th trial loaf of Challah. “Ever hear of personal space?”

“Bob,” I took his sticky buttery hands and held them, “baking bread is supposed to be calming, like Zen.” He looked at our clasped hands, thought for a moment, gazed into my eyes and said, “You have exactly 4 seconds to tell me what you’ve done with the raisins.”

“I . . . ate them.” I backed away, slowly.

“I slave all day in this hot kitchen.

And you just waltz right in and take what isn’t yours?”

“There’s also a dork contest, Bob. You won.”

On cold winter nights, he sits near our wood stove poring through cookbooks.

His ideas come from how ingredients sound together. Peanut butter, cheddar cheese, butter scotch, chocolate. These foods are “what people really want to eat,” he says.

Oddly, his mother’s cooking, he says,

was barely edible. “Everything was covered in Ragu. We’d place bets after dinner.

Was it chicken or fish?”

Bob has won 7 blue ribbons for his breads, but once he won 2nd prize, a red ribbon. He was a wreck. “You know what a red ribbon means?” he said to me. “It says to the world I’m a big fat loser.”

Last year, he won not only 3 blue ribbons, but the grand prize Best In Show ribbon for his Rum Raisin Challah, which he attributes to the Jewish offering custom.

This year, one of his entries is Bavarian Black Bread. Recently, we had a heartto-heart talk. I communicated my most intimate feelings. I said, “You better act like something other than a repulsive gargoyle this July or I’ll write an article on your behavior.” Threats are much more effective and time-efficient than the encouragement of actual psychological growth.

And so, Bob has straightened up. But unfortunately this turn-around has resulted in the following: 1. He’s adopted my Zen idea of bread baking and does everything agonizingly slowly. He stares at yeast. The dog and I roll our eyes. He speaks in parables which make no sense. “Without water, the yeast is above all, alive.”

2. He’s overly polite to me in the kitchen.

“Can I make you iced tea?” he’ll ask.

“No thanks.”

“You’re sure? It’s no trouble.”

“No. But thanks.”

“It’s easy. I’ll just get some ice and . .. ” “Bob! I don’t want your stinky iced tea!”

Somehow, in spite of an always-turbulent July, the day before the fair is wonderful. Bob does his final baking at 4 a.m. so the loaves will still be warm for the judges. I do love watching him carefully and tenderly wrapping his breads. And it’s so exciting in the exhibit building. Everyone, from the needlepoint designer to the pole bean farmer, is so proud of their wares. And I’m so proud of Bob. The competition is about people, not products. It’s about families and friends crossing their fingers. It’s about the fear and courage it takes to risk putting some-

Upsala Heritage Festival is Coming!

Mark your calendar now for lots of fun and fellowship on the weekend of August 13 and 14.

Saturday begins with an 8:00 a.m.

5K run and the Red and Green Theme parade at 10:30 a.m.

After the parade, come to the Borgstrom House just off north Main St. for a live concert by the Grey Eagle Community Chorus directed by Ron Grove.

Immediately following the concert lunch will be served.

At 1:00 p.m. the highlight of the Party in the Park, just east of Main St. in the center of town, will be the Alexandria Aces. They will demonstrate the Harlem Globe Trotter style of basketball with audience participation. Food booths are available along with inflatables for kids, firemen water fights, car show, crafts and more!

At the Recreation Building there will be kickball and bean bag tournaments sponsored by the Upsala Baseball Association. Along with music in the evening with fireworks.

On Sunday there will be a Waffle Feed from 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon. at the Upsala School cafeteria.

At 10:00 a.m. a Community Worship Service will be held in the school gym with guest speaker, Merrill Kendall of Little Falls.

The weekend events close with a Threshing demonstration at the property of Dennis Westrich. A horse drawn wagon will shuttle folks from one location to another.
