It replaces accomplishment with inaction. It turns dreams into nightmares.

When faced with a task that you just don’t want to do, many of us simply put it off until tomorrow. That’s why tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week. And one of these days become none of these days.

Putting off an unpleasant task until tomorrow simply gives you more time for your imagination to make a mountain out of a possible molehill . . . more time for anxiety to sap your self-confidence.

Most of us can relate to occasional bouts of procrastination – the phone call you have been dreading to place, the project that you just can’t get excited about, the meeting that you should have scheduled two weeks ago. But why can’t we just get in gear?

Thomas A. Harris, author of “I’m OK, You’re OK,” said there are three things that give people the “wantivation” to change: They must hurt sufficiently, they must experience despair or boredom, or they must suddenly discover they can change.

He explained, “Until one of these three is realized, any excuse not to change will suffice. As Mark Twain once said, ‘Why put off until tomorrow that which you can put off until the day after tomorrow?’”

Dr. Gail Saltz, author of “Becoming Real: Defeating the Stories We Tell Ourselves That Hold Us Back,” says that 20 percent of Americans are considered “chronic procrastinators.” But it’s not about laziness, it’s about fear, she says.

Among the reasons: • Fear of failure. Are you so paralyzed by the fear of failure that you’d rather just not try at all?

• Fear of success. Do you think that if you succeed at something then the bar will be set so high that you will never reach it again? Or are you afraid that you don’t deserve success?

• A need to be defiant. Is life generally a battle for control? Are you

taking a passive-aggressive approach to control by procrastinating?

• A thrill-seeker procrastinator. Are you trying to avoid the boredom of daily tasks? Does boredom terrify you? Do you need to create a crisis to keep things interesting?

Understanding procrastination will help you break the paralyzing habit of putting off what you need to do. Then you can begin to make the changes that will help you tackle your work with more determination.

Start prioritizing so you won’t get overwhelmed. Create to-do lists and figure out what’s important. As the old saying goes, “Well begun is half done.”

Knowing what you need to do is not enough. You need to plan to track your progress.

Then do just one step. Gather some preliminary information, call one person, or figure out what tools you need. Once you’ve completed that task, give yourself permission to do something else. In many cases, once you’ve begun you’ll be more inclined to keep on working. Even if you don’t, you’ll be one step closer to success when you come back to the task later.

I find it helpful to set a deadline, even when the project isn’t time-sensitive.

That way, there’s nothing hanging over my head that is cluttering up the rest of my workload. I also write down my todo list so that I can focus on one item at Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Hay Balers

My first hay baler I remember was owned by Leonard Schultz.

He baled some hay for us which was about a mile from the farm.

Hauling loose hay a mile was not profitable, since it required much more labor and the loads didn’t include as much hay as a load of bailed hay.

The baler was a big red monster.

It held the hay together with wire, the bales weighed so much that it sometimes required 2 men to lift them off of the ground and place them on the rack. There was a seat located toward the rear of the machine, so that a man could sit there and twist the wire ends to hold the bales together. A really hot, dusty, itchy spot.

The following years made the job easier with the use of twine, which was tied by the machine itself. The bales became smaller and were reduced to about 50 pounds. Much easier to handle, both in the field and in the barn.

Our first baler was a 1955 John Deere 14T. It was one of the first smaller balers John Deere produced. It worked well and was able to make 1000 bales in a day. The disadvantage was constantly

having to stop and replace shear pins.

One day Dad and I went out to bale hay in the late morning. We had only gone about 100 yards down the field when a shear pin broke, stopping the baling until the pin was replaced. Dad asked me to unhook the wagon and walk home. He took the tractor and baler to town and came back with a new baler.

I was surprised by his action and asked what he had spent for the new baler. He said $800.00 to boot. I said that that was a lot of money and his reply was that we had 1100 bales of hay to be baled and if we spent half of the day changing sheer pins, there would be half of the hay left on the field. He then added that if it rains for the next 3 days we would have to push the hay that had been left on the field into the woods, since it was now not fit for feed. That would be 550 bales at $1.00 per bale or $550.00, close to the cost of the new baler. We got all the hay baled that day and evening and it did rain the next day. A lesson in economics that I didn’t expect.

The farm acquired several balers during the following years. They all worked better than the one they replaced.

Procrastination is a problem at all levels. Charles M. Schwab, who founded Bethlehem Steel Company in 1904, was a master of his schedule. He made it a practice of investing five minutes each day analyzing the problems he should tackle the next day. He would write down those tasks in the order of priority.

When he arrived at his office the next morning, he would start with the top issue on his list and move on in order.

“This is the most practical lesson I’ve ever learned,” he claimed, and shared this example to prove his point: “I had put off a phone call for nine months, so I decided to list it as my number one task on my next day’s agenda. That call netted a $2 million order.”

I’m not sure what that would translate to in today’s economy, but I’d

The worst part is, they will often throw in that our grandchild will go without something unless we help.

We’re certain this isn’t teaching them to stand on their own feet, but we don’t know what else to do.

-David Dear David, You’re right about one thing. It’s time they both learned how to handle money like mature, responsible adults.

I don’t know how much you’ve tried to teach her about finances when she was growing up, but it sounds like this “needing help” thing is turning into an endless cycle.

You’re giving them money left and right, and it’s not working. You’re giving them fish, and you’ve heard that whole saying. You could also teach them to fish and then not give them any fish, but I like a third choice in this scenario — give them fish only if they take fishing lessons. They get no more money from you unless they get financial counseling together and make a serious move toward straightening up their lives.

If they try to play on your feelings by saying your grandchild is hungry, tell them to send the child over for a meal. If they run out of money until payday, tell them to go to their financial counseling session to find answers. Right now, every time they have a problem they call mom and dad. Guess what? They don’t have any problems as long as you’re doing what you’re doing.

Love them well. Hold their hands and say, “When I was your age, I wish someone had done this for me. I’m not going to give you any more money

Obituaries Elmer T. Kerestes

Fireman First Class, Elmer Tom Kerestes, U.S. Navy, age 22, of Holdingford, Minnesota, was killed in action aboard the USS Oklahoma, a U.S. Navy ship, on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked.

After 76 years, he will be brought home to rest next to his parents, and among his siblings and other relatives.

A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held July 29, 2017, 10:30 AM, at Highland Cemetery, Holdingford, Minnesota.

Elmer Tom Kerestes was born December 1, 1919 in Holdingford Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, to Thomas and Anna (Hrabosky) Kerestes.

F u n e r a l services will be held for Shannon Gode, of Browerville, on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Browerville.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church.

Shannon was born November 14, 1975, in Coon Rapids, to Stanley & Kathleen (Otremba) Krupke. In 2001, she married Rick Gode at Christ the King Catholic Church in Browerville. Shannon worked at Day Break Foods in Long Prairie for the last 15 years. She loved her boys and spent much of her free time attending their activities. Shannon enjoyed sports, was a MN Vikings fan and a fan of any sport Landon and Mason were participating in.

She volunteered often and she would do anything to help her family and friends; she was a very selfless and giving person.

Shannon also was willing to dig in and accomplish anything...she was a city girl and moved to the farm and got right into milking cows and driving tractors. She was smart and had a great sense of humor.

Shannon enjoyed traveling, scrapbooking, cooking, camping and fishing.

This land, the cemetery, once belonged to his grandfather. He grew up here and on August 22, 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Elmer received the Purple Heart posthumously. He is remembered at the Soldiers Shrine of WWII, in Holdingford, Minnesota. VFW Post #5160 is named after Elmer and another man.

She was a member of All Saints St. Hedwigs Catholic Church, the Rosary Sodality/Christian Women and the funeral group.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Donna (Robert) Pueringer, Holdingford and Dennis (Mary Lou) Jarnot, Shoreview. Her brothers, Richard Bartkowicz, Swanville, Donald (Bernadine) Bartkowicz, Bowlus, Ernie (Jeanette) Barkowitz, Little Falls, seven grandchildren: Lisa Knettel, Lynn (Art) Williams, Lori (Brent) Bukowski, LeAnn Pueringer, Rob Pueringer Jr., Andy (Jessica) Jarnot and Doug Jarnot, seven great-grandchildren; Nick and Jake Knettel, Carter and Jack Bukowski, Izabella, Ayla & Emery Pueringer and baby girl Jarnot, due in October.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Lorraine Jarnot, age 91 of Holdingford will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 22 at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwigs in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Friday and again after 10:00 AM, Saturday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford.

Lorraine Jarnot was born on November 9th, 1925 to Stanley and Cecelia (Kedrowski) Bartkowicz (called Lora by the Bartkowicz family) in Swan River Township. She grew up with 7 siblings and attended the local country school until the 8th grade. On September 25, 1945, Lorraine married John S. (Jolly John) Jarnot at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski. Lorraine was a hard working, independent woman from milking cows to doing field work for the neighbors. She worked at several sewing manufacturers; Fingerhut, St. Cloud

mechanic. C.J. had various jobs in the past, with his most recent being at Auto Value in Albany. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and riding around on his motorcycle. C.J. will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Leander and Dorothy Hollenkamp of Freeport; brother, Guy (Lisa) Hollenkamp of Becker; nephew, Logan (Megan) Hollenkamp of Eagan; niece, Alana Hollenkamp of Rogers; special friend, Therese; and many other relatives and friends.

C.J. was preceded in death by his infant twin brother, Cory Hollenkamp.

Serving as casket bearers were Paul Hoeschen, Larry Hoeschen, Germain Petermeier, Mark Koetter, Mike Ritter, and Steve Congdon. Cross bearer was Logan Hollenkamp and scripture bearer was Alana Hollenkamp. Reader was Megan Hollenkamp and gift bearers were Zach Hoeschen and Gavin Petermeier.

Eulogy was read by Paul Hoeschen.

James Goellner

J a m e s Goellner, age 66 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota on July 6, 2017 surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 10th at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

James Craig Goellner was born May 17, 1951 in Freeport, Illinois, the son of William Andrew and Eleanor Rue (Edwards) Goellner. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he learned to love the desert and cultivated his natural talent for scuba diving and spearfishing - he was known as “the fish boy” by many of the local taxi drivers because he would always bring

home his catch to his mother.

On September 8, 1980, James was united in marriage to Sharon Anne Fischer in Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, Minnesota. He was deeply devoted to his wife and never took off his wedding band. The only thing greater than his dedication to Sharon was his deep devotion to his Catholic faith which he adopted at the age of 19. He was an avid reader, an interest which he passed on to his three children.

James was a member of the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Sharon; children, Philip (Sara) Goellner of Sauk Centre, Sister Sharon Rose “Anna” Goellner, O.P., of Nashville, TN, and Emily (Kyle) Hoium of Melrose; grandchildren, Raphael, Magdalen, Eleanor, and Elijah Goellner and a Hoium grandchild anticipated in November; and brothers, Dr. William Edward Goellner and Stephen Goellner.

James was preceded in death by Guadalupe, a child in infancy; and his parents, William and Eleanor Goellner.

Ambrose “Andy” Stanoch The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Ambrose “Andy” Stanoch, age 99 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, July 21 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Andy died peacefully at his home on July 11. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, July 21 at the church in Opole. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Andy was born in Brockway Township to Walter and Mary (Rudolph) Stanoch. He grew up on the family farm and then moved to Minneapolis where he tended bar before entering the U.S. Army in June of 1941. He was attached to the 327th Airdrome Squadron serving

as a airplane maintenance tech on fighters and bombers in Alaska and Burma. He married Leona Plaziak on November 24, 1948 in St. Austin’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis, the couple moved to their farm near Holdingford where they farmed together until Leona died on December 24, 1999. Andy was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church where he had been active as an usher. He was also a past member of the Knights of Columbus.

Andy is survived by his children, Andrea (Thomas Crocker) Stanoch, Surprise, AZ; Paul Stanoch, Holdingford and Lonnie (Mike) Strand, Holdingford.

He is also survived by 2 granddaughters, Jamie & Carrie Strand and sisters and brothers, Rosemary Marsolek, MD; Margie Fautsch, Holdingford; Clarence (Bena) Stanoch, Columbia Heights; and Alphonse (Eileen) Stanoch, Holdingford.

Andy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leona, and his sisters and brothers, Lucy Skwira, Josephine Dolan, Helen Stanoch, Lorraine Sachs, Valeria Stanoch and Claudie Stanoch.

State Legislature has taken the Governor to court.

How did we get here?

By Patricia Seifert The process this year has me concerned. The State Legislature passed two budget bills. The first one was done late April or early May and the Governor sent it back signing none of it. The second was done and before him several days before the end of session. He did look at it and started to negotiate still needing a special session.

Now, supposedly, he and his team were directly involved in negotiating the bill which he signed. But as he signed it he said that there was a “poison pill” added by the Republicans in the Legislature. Further he stated that he, his

staff and the DFL in the Legislature did not get a chance to read the final draft.

Oddly, the drafts were available through the entire process and updated daily with changes. And the final version was available over 36 hours before signing.

Now to me, anyone involved in the negotiating would know what is in the bill. Of course, we do have to remember this is the same Governor who took immense credit and pleasure in getting the US Bank Stadium deal negotiated and approved then within two months claimed he knew nothing about the seat licensing in the deal. How can that be if he was so involved in the negotiations?

Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan hosts Fundraiser and Benefit Concert

The historic Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan, located on Original Main Street in downtown Sauk Center, will celebrate its 150th anniversary on September 10, 2017, with a Festal Eucharist. Bishop Brian Prior, of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, will preside and preach. At that time, the Good Samaritan Award will be presented to an individual who exemplifies above and beyond dedication and service to the community.

As is evidenced by the sign on the church lawn, the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan has been undergoing restoration of its historic structure.

A Legacy Grant from the Minnesota Historical Society enabled the church to complete Phase I last spring. Another Legacy Grant is now being sought for Phase 2, the restoration of the rear sanctuary wall and the Good Shepherd stained glass window, which had been removed and temporarily installed in-

side the sanctuary to await placement in the outside wall.

Because of its location on Original Main Street, the Church, as the oldest church structure in continuous use in the city, is an important part of the history of Sauk Centre, In order to provide matching funds for the Legacy Grant, funds are being sought from parishioners, friends, family, community leaders and local businesses. In the upcoming months you will continue to see information on our Restoration of Rear Sanctuary Wall Fundraiser and Silent Auction on September 7th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the ElmerZ Event Center. The event will feature food/drinks and entertainment by Slew Foot. Tickets can be purchased from members of the parish, reserved by calling the church 320-3526882 to leave a message, or at the door the day of the event.

Additionally, the Grey Eagle Community Chorus will present a benefit concert and hymn sing on Monday, August 14th at 7 p.m. at Good Samaritan in Sauk Centre to help the historic church restore its sanctuary wall.

Free will offering raffle tickets for the lovely wall hanging generously donated by well-known artist, Nancy Kazlauskas are still available. For those not familiar with her work, do check out the large wall hanging displayed inside the entrance to the Sauk Centre branch of the Great River Library. The wall hanging is 44”x54”, and the motif is “You never really leave a place you love. You take it with you and leave part of yourself.”

The wall hanging will be displayed at the Fundraiser at ElmerZ’s on September 7th and the drawing is scheduled to be held Sunday, September 10th, when the parish officially celebrates its 150th anniversary.

for grace is charis - a word used when speaking of forgiveness. From it comes our word “charity” - giving something to someone when they do not deserve “it” or cannot get “it” themselves. It also implies being “gracious” - that is, grace in action.

Showing God’s grace is what Christians are to do after they accept God’s grace. And unless we show it we might question whether or not we really have it!

For example, when we are saved by grace we are to become gracious and act differently. Cruelty is to be replaced with kindness, anger with acceptance, rejection with reconciliation and giving instead of always getting.

Grace is certainly a comprehensive word. It is as wide as the world. Remember what Jesus said: “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall be saved.”

Our indebtedness to God for His grace is beyond us. Our indebtedness to show His grace to others is not optional.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Seeking input on new fertilizer application rule

The Department of Agriculture is wrapping up this week a series of public listening sessions on the topic of a new rule pertaining to the application of fertilizer in the fall. The proposed rule deals specifically with nitrogen fertilizer and restricts its application in the fall and on frozen soil in vulnerable groundwater areas. It also provides for a mitigation process and application of “best management practices” in areas with high concentrations of nitrates in groundwater.

The last of the listening sessions was scheduled to be held on Monday of this week in St. Paul. In addition, the department will accept written comments through Aug. 17. After that, there is a series of steps that must be followed, including approval by an administrative law judge, before the rule could officially be adopted. It’s expected this process will take until the summer or fall of next year, at the earliest. There are links on the Department of Agriculture’s website that provide additional information and allow for written comments. I was in Des Moines, Iowa, last week for a legislative conference and co-chaired the meetings of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. We heard reports on new technology in the field, and also got an update on work done so far on the new farm bill, which is scheduled to be completed by 2018. Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, took part in that presentation. It’s expected that Northey may soon be named to a top position at USDA in Washington, D.C. It was typical corn-growing weather

there during our conference. Temps in the 90s, accompanied by high relative humidity, made for some uncomfortable conditions outside. The corn fields around Des Moines were in full tassel and looked very good, although they are also in need of rain. The long-range forecasts were calling for continued hot weather, so it will be interesting to hear how their crop comes through the critical pollination stage under those conditions.

We also toured a cellulosic ethanol plant in the area. When at full production, it’s expected that 70,000 large square bales of corn stover will be utilized annually in the production of ethanol. Officials at the plant said they are encouraging farmers who bale corn stalks to leave their fields untouched in the fall and not do heavy tillage. The plan is to come back in the spring with a light tillage pass and then plant into that residue.

The weather was nearly perfect for parades this past weekend in both Sauk Centre and Freeport. Good crowds were on hand for both, and the kids lining the parade routes seemed to do quite well in filling their bags with candy tossed their way.

No parades on our schedule this week, but the Stearns County Fair is coming up next weekend, July 27-30. Glenwood’s Waterama is also set for that same weekend.

As this is written Monday morning, our weather is also heating up. Highs in the 90s with heat advisories were forecast, followed by several chances of rain the rest of the week. Precipitation has been spotty around the area, and some are in greater need of rainfall than others. Our farm would be in the category of needing rain soon, as we’ve had only six-tenths of an inch so far this month. The corn is just starting to tassel and could certainly use a drink!

Grey Eagle City May 9, 2017 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 9th day of May, 2017 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner and Bill Pohlmann. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Rick Utech, John Roe, Brian Hollenkamp, Dennis Bacon, Dan Berscheid, Derek Pohlmann, Jeri Ahrens, Jill Ainali, Ken Messer and Jeff Koehn.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the minutes of the April 11, 2017 meeting as written. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the minutes of the April 12, 2017 Board of Equalization meeting as written. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Dennis Bacon presented the 2016 audit to the Council. Dennis stated that the city is in good financial condition but that the council should continue to look at water and sewer rates, continue to monitor the bills each month and checking bank reconciliations, and to keep close tabs on expenses. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the 2016 audit as presented by Dennis Bacon. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to appoint Samantha Pohlmann to the Fire Department roster. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Dan Berscheit reported that the aluminum box for the rescue rig is being manufactured.

Dan Berscheit is requesting that the council increase the benefit to the Grey Eagle Relief Association from $950 per year of service to $1,050 per year of service. The Relief Association has $326,000 in liabilities and $412,000 in assets which is a 30% surplus of funds. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann

to increase the benefit to the Grey Eagle Relief Association to $1,050 per year of service. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

John Roe was in attendance representing the Big Birch Lake Association regarding the water line break and subsequent bill. The water line break was before the meter but was after the curb stop. The Big Birch Lake Association Board felt that more could have been done to find the water leak sooner and that it would only seem equitable to charge for the costs incurred in locating the source of the water leak and not for the two million gallons of water that they were billed for because it did not run through the meter. Their insurance company covered the clean-up but would cover nothing on the water loss. John was authorized by the Big Birch Lake Association Board to do whatever he can to come to an agreement with the council regarding the bill. They would also like to have the water turned back on while the matter is being negotiated. The council agreed to have the water turned back on and will their offer after consulting with the city attorney.

Rick Utech was in attendance to provide the council with information regarding the Todd County Economic Development. The new website is toddcountydevelopment. org and they received an NJP Innovation Grant for a regional website. They have also provided loan assistance to Chris’ Country Store and KB’s Specialties and have generated some potential interest in the now empty café.

Jeri Ahrens and Jill Ainali were in attendance to get approval to have their portion of undeveloped Bovee Street graded to level it out and then have some crushed granite hauled in to fill in the pot holes at their expense. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to allow the Ahrens and Ainali families to grade and haul in crushed granite at their expense on that portion of Bovee Street that they currently use as their driveways. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Ken Messer was in attendance seeking council approval to put an extension on the culvert that goes under the alley. Chico will contact Erv Herdering to have him come and look at the culvert. If the work needs to be completed, it will be done by Herdering, Inc.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to appoint Brian Hollenkamp to the remaining 18 months of the vacant council seat. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Joe Arnzen closed the meeting for employee evaluation at 8:15 p.m.

Mayor opened the regular meeting at 8:37 p.m.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to increase the wage for the part time maintenance employee to $14 per hour with review of wage in six months. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk will work with the city attorney on the Fire Department compensation policy.

The council discussed the community sign. There is a potential site for the sign to be placed but Chico would need to contact MnDOT to find out what setbacks would be required.

Mayor Joe Arnzen left the meeting at 9:09 p.m. Acting Mayor Thom Muellner took over.

The Clerk informed the council that the Tobacco and Alcohol ordinance needs to be updated due to changes in state law. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to call for a public hearing on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 7:30 p.m., in the council meeting room. A second was made

by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk informed the council that there was an offer made regarding the Parish headstone at Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. Parish offered $1,000 donation to the cemetery if the council would approve the larger headstone. Based on information obtained from the city attorney, it was the consensus of the council that their previous decision stands and will not allow the larger headstone.

The Clerk was instructed to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Department regarding a vehicle that has been left on a vacant property.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Discussed the four year service contract with Johnson Jet Line.

If a sewer project would take place any time during the four year contract, the contract would cancel the year the project would start. Chico will request the new contract for the June meeting.

2. A battery back-up for the SCADA system would cost approximately $500. A motion was made

by Thom Muellner to purchase a battery back-up for the SCADA system not to exceed $500. A sec-

ond was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

3. The dock has been installed at the Bass Lake access.

4. Chico received a verbal quote to repair 4 gate valves at the cost of $300 each which includes parts and labor. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the repair of four gate valves at the quoted price. A second was made

by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

5. It was reported that someone has been driving on the undeveloped street by the storage unit on the south end of Ward Street. Chico will put up tape to block off that section of street.

6. Chico reported that there are car tires on the front of the tractor.

This makes it difficult to mow the outside structures of the ponds because they are too smooth and tend to slide. Chico will get a quote for two new tires and report at the June meeting.

7. The roof vents at the water plant were leaking and have been repaired by Ken Frieler.

8. Both generators worked well during a recent power outage in the city.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utility bills as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $28,980.50 from Central Minnesota Credit Union checking to First State Bank of Swanville checking, $748.26 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $101.26 from the General Fund of which $31.26 goes to the Water Fund and $70 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include payment of the following additional items: $1,854.94 to Minnesota Power, $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union and $5,300 to Dennis Bacon. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The interior of the Fire Hall where the trucks are housed is in need of repairs in some sheetrock and painting. The council instructed that estimates be obtained for the July council meeting.

The clerk received a complaint regarding a broken flower planter at Lakeview Cemetery. The council reviewed the photos and determined that the city was not negligent in the planter being damaged as it appears that it had been deteriorating over time.

The Slow Down Is Around The Corner - By John Young We are in the middle of summer here in Central Minnesota! The days are warm, the traffic to our local business tends to be on the uptick, and our bottom line looks promising! Our area is influenced by increased summer traffic including the return of those that go south for the winter along with those vacationing around our area lakes.

Those few months of higher traffic may not be enough anymore to keep some local businesses operating. There are a few things you can do during the busy times as small business to help keep some traffic flowing during those slower months.

1. Advertise your brand (business) during the busy season to establish yourself on the radar of residents.

One assumption that is so wrong in our small towns is that ‘everyone knows we are here!’ Many long term residents do know you are here, but there are many new folks coming into our communities each month who don’t know who you are or what you offer. Take the time and invest a bit into establishing your brand during the busy times, so your word is out to establish your brand and identity as a year around convenient resource for local shoppers.

2. Continue your branding during the slower times.

Branding or promoting your business will change as your monthly cash flow changes. During the slower times, you have to look at who is your optimal client, and use advertising methods that reach those people to keep your business top of mind. During the busy times, you should already be focusing on those mediums that reach your ideal customers; but during the slow times, you can’t afford to throw money toward advertising that MIGHT reach people or MIGHT get your name out there.

It is much easier for residents to overlook and ignore doing business with a local establishment when the business doesn’t promote themselves enough to be on one’s top of mind.

3. Prepare for those slower times.

food for the winter, small businesses need to prepare for those slower times. That might include changes in merchandise levels, it might mean changes in product lines, it might mean reducing staff or hours; it can vary from business to business on what is needed for the slower months. Setting realistic projections for the slower month sales and establishing the business plan to work during the busy and slower seasons will help keep your business afloat!

4. Plan for next season.

I am talking about the busy time of 2018. It isn’t too early to start thinking about what you could do differently and put things in place now and for the winter months to get your business ready for a successful, busy season. Take some time to look around at who is doing well during the busy time and who is struggling. Also, take note on how those local businesses who do well during the off season keep their sales moving forward. You can learn quite a bit by watching others and their success/failures and apply some of those lessons to your business.

5. Take time to network.

Even though you are very business in your prime season, you need to get out and network. That might mean attending Chamber of Commerce events or other community group outings. In some of our small towns, the local Lion’s or similar type club meetings almost represent many of the local businesses these days.

Go to these events and get involved and network! As more people know who you are and what you offer in your business, the better chance you can bring more people into your business during the busy and slower times.

6. Evaluate your offerings.

Look at what you are doing and how you can improve your customer’s experience. Can you improve your delivery process? Can you improve your customer’s buying experience? Can you improve your products? Can you create a unique atmosphere to create a unique experience for your customers? You might find that you are missing something key in creating a customer experience that would keep traffic flowing at a higher level during those slow months!

The Juarez family inquired whether or not a building permit was required to removing the existing patio block to remove some soil, replace it with class five and sand and put the patio block back down. A building permit is not required to put down patio block as long as it isn’t cemented down. The council wanted to thank the Juarez family for checking on building permit requirements. No action was taken on the Johnson building permit.

The Public meeting regarding the Wellhead Protection Plan for the City of Grey Eagle was opened at 8:00 p.m. George Minerich is a planner for the Minnesota Department of Health and provided those in attendance with information obtained as a result of Phase 1 of the Wellhead Protection Plan that was already approved by the council and submitted to the Minnesota Department of Health. Phase II of the plan will be written by George with the help from the Maintenance Supervisor and the Clerk and should begin sometime between July and September. The public meeting was closed at 8:10 p.m.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Anderson Brothers may wish to park some campers at Lions Centennial Park while they work on the State Highway 287 resurfacing project.

2. An estimate was submitted

by Terrain Aesthetics to spray the picnic shelter park area for $200 per application. A motion was

made by Bill Pohlmann to hire Terrain Aesthetics to spray the picnic shelter park area with one application per year for $200. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

3. The UPS back up for the SCADA system was tabled.

4. Herdering, Inc., provided a verbal estimate of $200 to extend the culvert in the alley on Woodman Street North between Minnesota Street East and State Street East.

5. All the gate valves except one have been repaired. Chico will contact the company to see when the last one will be completed.

6. Some discussion was held regarding the baseball field but no action was taken.

7. Chico is working on getting some wheel weights for the tractor to help keep the tractor grounded when mowing the ponds.

8. There is a dead evergreen tree at Lions Centennial Park that needs to be removed.

9. It was reported that there is some sort of white substance on the carpet at the Library that could not be removed when cleaning. The council recommended just cleaning it as good as they can.

The council discussed property clean up. There is a dead tree by the State Bank sign next to the post office, a dead tree at the property next to the Credit Union, and yard cleanup of a property on Cedar Street South. Residents should remove dead trees that pose a hazard to theirs or their neighbors’ property.

The council received notice that parcel #34-00003300 is intended to be sold by Todd County as a tax forfeited property. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve parcel #34-00003300 for public auction. A second was made

by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $748.26 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, $101.39 from the General Fund of which $31.39 goes to the Water Fund and $70 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities, and $294.10 from the Sewer Fund to the Sewer Rehab Fund for the period of January through April 2017. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include payment of the following additional items: $136.40 to Melrose Bakery, $250 to Double J Entertainment, $127.93 to Mark Larson, $1,839.28 to Minnesota Power and $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union.

The next regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 in council chambers.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held June 27, 2017 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Louis Thompson, and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering.

The minutes from the regular meeting of May 30, 2017 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Thompson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from May tax settlement, population census estimate and weed information book.

The board also received a complaint about a property owner on 331st Ave with fence too close to road. This causes problems with mowing ditches. A supervisor will contact land owner. There were two areas that had problems with trees on the road that supervisors took care of.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5440 through 5452: Rev. $884.50 R & B $27,025.41. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A property owner on Long Lake contacted the board about removing the road easement on her property. The board discussed the steep ditch and the other road access issues and would need to view the property. The land owners would need to petition the board to remove the old road easement.

Todd County contacted Burnhamville Township about the value of tax forfeited property that is going to public auction. The board signed approval of the presented value.

Sup. Thompson reported that one beaver was removed from Buck Lake, and, after working on culvert, the water level is down. He will watch other areas of the lake for problems.

In the road report the contractor said the requested areas are sprayed for dust control, but he is waiting on a rail car for more spray to finish intersections. They are moving the rock crusher to prepare for other road repair projects.

The tree trimmer asked for clarification on Ermine Drive. The board decided remove all trees 10 feet from edge of road and trim trees that lean toward the road.

Supervisors are working on weed inspections.

Clerk presented a list of files destroyed according to the General Records Retention.

Supervisors will view 210th St. on Thursday, July 20 to plan how to improve road.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $77,837.70. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:41 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Todd County Sheriff’s Dept.

July 14, 2017: At 12:20 a two vehicle accident was reported on county road 47 near the Stearns county line. A 2014 Grey Honda accord driven by Stephen Doth, 64 , of Grey Eagle was south bound on County road 47 being followed by a 2017 Chevy Silverado driven by Abigail Colberg,28, of Blaine, When Doth slowed to turn the Colberg vehicle struck his car. Minor damage was reported and no one was injured.

July 15, 2017: At 18:49, TCSO received information about an internet scam that occurred to a resident in rural Long Prairie. The reporting party advises that they have been paying a company named Tech Fly from California to fix her home computer. She allowed the company to remotely access her computer. The scammers claimed that the victim has overpaid for their work and they were refunding her $3000.00. They called back a while later and claimed to have refunded her $8000.00 and she needed to send them $5000.00 back using Walmart gift cards. The suspects then hacked into her online bank account and stole money from some credit cards linked to her checking account.

TCSO is currently investigating the incident. People are strongly urged to avoid allowing companies to remotely log onto your computer systems.
