Communication need not be complicated -By Harvey Mackay Several years ago, a seasoned plumber wrote to the U.S. Bureau of Standards promoting a new procedure for cleaning pipes.

The bureau replied: “The efficiency of the recommended solution is completely undisputed.

However, there is an inherent incompatibility between the aforementioned solution and the basic chemical structures of the commonly used materials in current household and commercial pipeworks.”

The plumber wrote back saying, “Thanks, I really liked it, too.”

Within a few days, the Bureau responded with another letter: “Don’t use hydrochloric acid! It eats holes in pipes!”

Wouldn’t it have been so much easier – and less expensive – to put it simply the first time?

The word communication comes from the Latin communico, meaning share.

We share ideas, thoughts, information and concerns. Communication can start friendships or make enemies.

Communication needs to be clear and understandable. Communication requires both effective sending and receiving.

And if we don’t do it effectively, we have wasted our time.

Research psychologists tell us that the average one-year-old child has a three-word vocabulary. At age two, most children have a working knowledge of 272 words. A year later, that number more than triples. At age six, the average child has command of 2,562 words.

As adults, our word accumulation continues to grow but the effective use of them does not necessarily follow. We can speak up to 18,000 words each day, but that doesn’t mean those messages are clear or correctly received. In fact, words can often obscure our messages instead of clarifying them.

No one can succeed in business, or in life, for that matter, without developing good communication skills.

The most basic yet crucial leadership skill is communication. It’s important to continue to evaluate your performance in these fundamental areas: • Speaking. Good verbal skills are essential. You have to be able to explain your requests and instructions, your ideas, and your strategies to people inside and outside your organization. Look for opportunities to hone your speaking skills at conferences, in meetings and among friends.

• Listening. Pay attention to the people around you. Repeat and paraphrase what they say to make sure you understand – and to show that you take their opinions seriously.

• Writing. The paper trail you leave tells people a lot about how clearly you think and express yourself. Don’t send even the simplest email without rereading it critically to be sure it says just what you want.

• Leading meetings. You should encourage other people to share their ideas without letting discussions meander aimlessly. Sharpen your ability to keep meetings on track and elicit productive comments. Remember that every meeting should begin with a solid agenda and conclude with a commitment for action.

• Resolving conflict. Conflict can be subtle, but you still must defuse it if you want things to get done. You’ll use a lot of the skills already discussed to encourage Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Differences

Were we bad kids? Were we more naughty than today’s kids?

There are many different o p i n i o n s regarding the above questions.

Those of us from the previous generation sometimes share memories from our childhood with those from our age group. These discussions frequently end with a statement such as, “the kids don’t do that today,” and the reason is that the kids from the two generations are so totally different.

The kids from yesterday had to use their own imaginations and ingenuity to create ways to build their own world.

They spent time with others their own age to create projects and experiences to make their world more complete. They built toys and used their imaginations to fit these items into the world as they saw it. For example, a baseball in a sock and a crayon face would create a doll, a paper plate with a face drawn on it and tied to a pillow was a doll, a stick would be used as a gun or a knife to defend yourself from outlaws, spending time in a wooded area gave the opportunity to use stealth against your opponents.

Winter was a special time, since it was then possible to play king on the hill, build forts, slide down hill and create snow tunnels.

Some of our time was also used to do the chores and assigned responsibilities, which created a work ethic which formed the basis for adult living. Many of us learned that hard physical labor was not to be avoided, but it was simply something that was a part of life. We didn’t always enjoy it, but it needed to be done.

Discipline was more “one on one.”

We had a fear of authority, whether it was at home, in the community, in school or at church. It seemed that most of the adults with which we had contact, had the right to inflict pain on our bodies to encourage us to behave and follow the accepted procedures. Whether the corrections came from school, the church or the legal system, we knew there would possibly be additional punishment when our parents “found out.” Today’s society will not allow many of these physical “reminders.” We were taught that if you disrupt the class or are hyper-active, you needed to shape up or suffer the consequences. Today it’s counseling or medication. Does the new way seem more logical?

We lived in a world that was more open. Today, if a kid has had some form of alcohol, he would be arrested, booked and is now part of the court system and be banned from school sports programs.

In the past, if you were a kid and created a minor unlawful act, the cop would drive you home and let your parents handle

the situation according to the rules of the home. In both cases, you were probably just a kid trying to find out what it was like to bend the law. Must the kid’s life have a permanent scar?

Today children are frequently deprived from using their imaginations to fill their time. Television, computers and hand-held devices are designed and in many cases actually do, control a majority of the child’s time. Much of the information to which they are exposed is from a source which is not totally in accord with the accepted moral ideas of their home or community. This may cause a communication barrier between generations. The younger generation even uses a language that we frequently don’t understand.

We were brought up by our local communities. The youth of today spend a lot of their time being brought up by sources away from their community.

Both generations are the result of influences on their being. I can’t yet say which method was right or wrong, but I’m leaning toward the old ways.

people to open up and clear the air about their disagreements.

• Persuasion. The right words can stimulate agreements, offer alternate points of view, provoke thoughtful consideration and bring people around to your way of thinking. This is an especially critical skill for sales people, which is all of us in one capacity or another.

Perhaps the most helpful advice came from Peter Drucker, the late management guru, who said, “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.”

Beware of misinterpreting simple messages because of your perception of the sender’s meaning or intent. Here’s an eye-opening fact: the 500 most common words in the English language have more than 14,000 definitions. That explains a lot of why verbal interactions often create confusion and misunderstanding.

“What is your line of work?” asked the woman.

“I’m an artist,” came the reply.

“I’ve never met a real live artist before,” said the woman. “This is so exciting! I’ve always wanted my portrait

painted. Could you do that?”

“That’s my specialty!” the artist said.

“Wonderful!” she said. “I just have one request. I want the painting done in the nude.”

The artist hesitated for a minute and then said, “I’ll have to get back to you.”

A few days later the artist called the potential customer to discuss the plan.

“I’m willing to do the painting as you requested,” the artist said, “but I have one stipulation. I want to leave my socks on. I need somewhere to put my paintbrushes.”

Mackay’s Moral: It is wiser to choose what you say than say what you choose.

Obituaries Olive B. Meller

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Olive B. Meller, 96, of Albany, MN and formerly of Holdingford will be 11 a.m., Thursday, July 19, 2018 at All Saints-St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. prior to the Mass. Rev. Gregory Mastey will preside. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Holdingford. Olive passed away peacefully July 13, 2018 surrounded by her family at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Olive B. Meller, daughter of Charlie and Rose (Wenning) Schiller, was born September 6, 1921 in Albany Township, Minnesota. She was the oldest of three children. Olive grew up on the farm and enjoyed farming all her life. She moved to St. Cloud, MN where she worked as a waitress at the Tic Toc Café. On June 5, 1948, she married Ralph N. Meller in St. Anthony, Minnesota. They were blessed with four children, Elaine, Joan, Earl, and Linda. Olive resided on the family farm in Holdingford for 60 years before moving to Albany.

Lemke, age 67, of St. Wendel who died Monday at the St. Cloud Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Rev. Greg Miller will officiate and burial be at a later date at the parish cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-8 PM on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Church and also one hour prior to the services on Friday. Parish Prayers will be at 4 PM Thursday evening

Olive loved her family and friends. She belonged to All Saints-St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Christian Mothers, St. Rita’s Mission Group, Helping Hands of Holdingford, and Silver & Gold of Albany. She made many handmade quilts and hundreds of rosaries. She always had a large garden and made many apple pies and dill pickles. She enjoyed hard work and always wanted to run the lever while splitting wood. Olive played cards whenever she could. Traveling brought lots of good memories and she enjoyed trips to Germany, Oregon, Seattle, Branson, Las Vegas, and the Dakotas.

Olive is survived by her children, Elaine (Allen) Walter of Sauk Centre, Earl (Joan Dearing) Meller of St. Cloud, Linda (David) Fuchs of St. Cloud; son-in-law, Pat Moore of Prior Lake; grandchildren, Michael (Katie) Walter, Dr. Jeffrey (Kelly) Walter, Lorraine Walter, Kathrine Walter, Nicholas Meller and Christopher Meller; great grandchildren, William Welter and Anna Walter, sisters-inlaw, Rita Schiller and Bertha Schiller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Meller on July 14, 1993; daughter, Joan Moore on May 4, 2016; her parents; and her brothers, Harlin Schiller and Richard Schiller.

Kathy was born on May 11, 1951 in St. Cloud to Steven and Marie (Raab) Schirmers. Kathy was employed at Dahlin’s Supermarket in Avon and enjoyed socializing with customers. She retired in 2017 due to health issues. Family was everything to Kathy, especially her grandchildren. She also cherished her time with the daycare kids who called her grandma and George’s grandchildren. Kathy loved holidays, especially birthdays and Christmas. She also loved taking pictures and gardening.

She enjoyed crafting and attending the Little Falls Craft Fair every year with her daughter. Kathy was a very outgoing and caring person who was easy to please. She had the gift of gab and enjoyed life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Nona A. Walker, age 93 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, July 23 at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Hollis Bishop officiating. Inurnment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Nona Alvina Dicks was born October 24, 1924 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota, to Vernon and Mary (Eldred) Dicks. Nona attended Grey Eagle Public Schools. Palma Johnson, 94 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Mother of Mercy Senior Living in Albany, MN. A Funeral Service was held Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Word of Life Church in Upsala, MN, with Rev. Al Jergenson officiating. Burial was at Word of Life Cemetery. Arrangements were with Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Palma Mathilda Jergenson was born on October 27, 1923 on the family farm in Donnelly, Stevens County to the late George and Laura (Awsumb) Jergenson. She graduated from Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo, ND. She later attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Golden Valley, MN and she also worked at the Agricultural School as a baker in Morris, MN. Palma was united in marriage to Erling Johnson on September 24, 1950 at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church in rural Donelly, MN. The couple settled on a farm outside of Upsala, MN. They raised seven children on the farm. She was a fantastic cook and baker.

Palma enjoyed quilting and doing embroidery which her children and grandchildren enjoy to this day. She raised a garden which she shared with neighbors, friends, and relatives. Palma was active in her church, serving as president of Ladies Aide and a Sunday School teacher.

She was a humble, hard working farmers wife.

Palma resided at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN the past four years of life. She was well liked by everyone and never had an enemy.

Carmel Catholic Church, Long Prairie for Richard “Dick” Schroeder, age 68, of Long Prairie who passed away Thursday at CentraCare Health SystemsLong Prairie. Fr. Omar Guanchez officiated and burial took place at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie. F Dick was born on August 23, 1949 in Browerville, MN to Adolph and Elizabeth “Betty” Schroeder. Dick was united in marriage to JoAnn Robinson on July 6, 1996 at the Jerry Ardolf home on Lake Charlotte, Long Prairie, MN. Dick was in the Air Force from July 1971 to July 1975. He

Services celebrating the life of Eileen E. Young, age 80 of Holdingford, was held Wednesday, July 18, at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford, burial was in the parish cemetery. Eileen died Thursday at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Eileen was born on November 2, 1937 in Richmond to Leo and Pauline (Minnerath)

served in Germany, So. Vietnam and Texas.

He worked driving semi-truck for years and after semi-retirement, he was employed with Oak Ridge homes. Dick enjoyed the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and the Minnesota Wild. He could give any statistic for any sports team. Dick’s favorite past time was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Dick was a member of St. Mary’s Church, a life member of the VFW Post #1140 and the American Legion.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn of Long Prairie; brother, Larry Schroeder of Long Prairie; sister, Lori Jayne Stoffel of Fond Du Lac, WI, Alice (Tim) Johnson of Duluth, MN; children, Brandi (Chris) Conlon of Charlotte, NC, Steven (Cori) Rist of Long Prairie, MN, Michelle (Tony) Nelson of Pequot Lakes, MN, Scott (Jodi) Rist of Montrose, CO; grandchildren, Blakely, Leah, Anthony, Lillian “Lilly” and Cooper, and a multitude of cousins and special aunt, Delores Schroeder.

Bauer. She married LeRoy Young on July 17, 1956 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. The couple farmed together near Holdingford. Eileen was a member of the Church of All Saints St Mary and the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers/Women and the Holdingford American Legion Auxiliary.

Eileen is survived by her husband, LeRoy Young; Holdingford; her children, Diane Young, Holdingford; Deb (Dan) Knapp, Avon; Doris (Allan) Pilarski, St. Cloud; Delroy Young, Holdingford; Donna (Ken) Knapp, Avon; Duane Young, Holdingford and Ed (Shelly) Young, Holdingford. She is also survived by her sister, Lorriane Hartung, Avon, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Richard “Pete” Barthel F u n e r a l services for Richard “Pete” Barthel will be held Friday, July 20, 2018 at 3 p.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. Pete died July 11, 2018.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 20 from 1-3 p.m. at the church.

Pete was born April 6, 1930 in Swanville Township, Todd County, to Frank & Elsie (Shinabarger) Barthel. On November 10, 1951, Pete married Orianna Mabry; they have been married for 66 ½ years. Together they had three children: Richard “Junior”, Robert “Bob” and Marilyn “Punk”.

Pete worked six years at the milk plant in Browerville as a truck driver. Before that he worked in St. Paul as a press operator. In 1965, he started working for Larson Boats in Little Falls as an over the road driver. He delivered boats to 49 states and from one end

of Canada to the other. Pete visited Hawaii; making him to have been in all 50 states. Pete retired in September of 1992. He worked for Zinter Potato Farms as a truck driver in the summer months. He went to Weslaco, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley from January of 1993 to April of 2016. He enjoyed every minute of it and made many friends from different states. He enjoyed his family especially the little ones. He loved them dearly.

Horses were a big part of his life, he had 1 to 4 horses all the time. He rode and loved driving them. He had 10 beef cows for over 25 years. He loved being outside taking care of the yard and garden. He could not take care of the garden anymore, but still cut grass last year and always talked to his horses.

Pete is survived by his wife Orianna of 66 ½ years, son Junior (Betty) of Browerville, daughter-in-law Cathy of Illinois, and daughter Punk of Long Prairie; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; brothers: Frank & Lloyd (Vicky) of Swanville.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents; son Bob, son-in-law Jim Proell, brother Ed and sisters: Viola Zilka and Alice Barthel.

So far in Mark, Jesus the the Christ the Son of God appears and immediately begins his ministry. This moves fast with the calling of his disciples, performing miracles, teaching in parables, calming the storm as only God could do, casting out demons in foreign lands and performing more healings.

Today Jesus is back home in Nazareth. He preaches very powerfully, reports of his miracles are shared and yet the Word of God is rejected by them because they knew him. The people of Nazareth were so familiar with Jesus that they could not believe that he was even a prophet, let alone the very Son of God and the Messiah.

Familiarity can be a dangerous thing.

Knowing of God and believing in Jesus our entire lives can lead one to reject the Gospel simply because that is what we’ve always believed. When we never know

what unbelief is like it can be a challenge to appreciate what we really have. The message a pastor gives can lose potency when familiarity sets in.

However a prophet is a prophet. A Pastor is a bringer of God’s Word regardless of where he is from. The ways of our human heart are what get in the way. For whether the prophet or preacher is from nearby or far away God uses the same fallen and sinful and common people to spread his word. Just because some pastor is unknown or from far away doesn’t mean his message is more special than another pastor or preacher from closer to home.

When Jesus says, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household,” he is not proclaiming some universal truth prohibiting pastors from serving in their hometowns; rather he is reflecting on a common problem derived from sin. Ideally a prophet is to be accepted regardless of where he is from because it is not the pedigree of the man preaching that is important but the message he has from God. It is what he has to say and even the people of Nazareth marveled at what Jesus said yet their past with him just interfered. There is a hurdle that must be overcome when a preacher or teacher returns to his hometown and Jesus points it out because the people of his hometown of Nazareth stumble and fall because of it.

As Jesus sends out the disciples in the next section they face the possibility of being rejected and not received for a variety of reason. Jesus warns them and instructs

In Him we are no longer victims but victors and through Him we need no longer fear the darkness and despair that surround the lost and those facing death.

Dear Motor Medics, My Husband and I purchased a 2007 Chevy Tahoe a few years back to haul our grandkids around. We looked at a few different vehicles trying to stick with a budget while getting the room we needed for five grandkids and we arrived at the Tahoe. It looks pretty good and has 180k miles on it. Until now it has given us no problems but last week we lost the air conditioning and our local garage wants $1200.00 to repair it. They said it is the rear high-pressure a/c line that has been damaged by the rocks on our gravel road. Naturally since we listen to your show we thought if anyone could help us save some cash with an alternative repair it might be you guys. Is there such thing as a used line for it? What’s involved in the repair?

-Mavis in Ohio Dear Mavis, Hose rear lines for the a/c are prone to damage and always have been. The good news is that they usually only get damaged in one spot near the wheel well and often can be repaired. We have been able to save all but one with a splice kit.

We lower the damaged section of the line then we splice it, replaced the accumulator and evacuate and recharge the system. We have seen other shops do it too and prices usually range from $250-$500 which is a lot better than your $1200 quote.

not much of a mechanic but I was able to change the starter myself and the truck ran awesome for a week. That’s when it went horribly wrong. I decided to tackle the broken clock spring for the air bag in the steering column so I could get my cruise back and have a working air bag and horn. Following a YouTube video I first unhooked the battery and touched the cables together to drain the voltage before taking out the air bag. I forgot to unhook my second battery and I got a huge spark and now the truck won’t run. I have not touched the air bag parts yet. I only got as far as the battery. Nothing lights up on my dash but all my lighting works. Can you help me?

When a battery is shorted like that it can cause a voltage spike that’s so high that it destroys modules. In our shop we go to one system at a time and check for power and ground and communication with a scanner to diagnose the system. You may have just blown some fuses or links but it could be much more.

M i c h a e l J. “Mike” Middendorf, age 68 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Mike was devoted to his family, loved by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, July 21 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Michael Joseph Middendorf was born August 7, 1949 in Melrose, Minnesota to George and Marilynn (Kane) Middendorf.

He resided in Sauk Centre his whole life and graduated from Sauk Centre High School.

He married LaVonne Graves on May 29, 1972 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Long Prairie, Minnesota. Together they purchased a dairy farm northeast of Sauk Centre where they lived for 32 years and raised their six children. Mike served in the Army National Guard for more than 20 years. He also served his community as a member of the parish council and town board. After selling the

family farm, Mike retired from dairy farming and continued to raise beef cattle. He and LaVonne moved to a home on Long Lake in Sauk Centre. Mike loved music of all kinds and traveling to Panama and Mexico.

Dear Dave, Dear Dave, I own a small business with two employees, and I have a bit of a hiring conundrum. I’m looking at two candidates for a position, and on paper they’re evenly matched.

I’ve interviewed each of them four times, and I’m still undecided. I was hoping you had an idea for determining which is best for the job.

-Bryan Dear Bryan, As an entrepreneur, that’s a great problem to have. I’m glad you understand the wisdom of interviewing potential hires more than once. Sometimes business owners hire a person after just one meeting. That’s a really bad idea.

Have you let your team members talk to them? Sometimes other people — especially those who might be someone’s co-worker — will pick up on things you missed during a formal interview. You might also think about scheduling a meeting with each of the candidates offsite. People tend to be more at ease in an informal setting, like a restaurant or coffee shop, and this could lead you to discover new things. Sometimes, a more relaxed setting allows you to see the whole person, and decide if you like who they really are. It can also lead someone to say things that might cause you to hire them — or not hire them.

Something we always do at my company is a final interview over dinner.

Spouses are invited to this meeting, and we encourage them to speak into the situation. I’m not talking about a big test, just conversation and a friendly, family atmosphere. You can tell a lot about a person by how they talk to, and interact with, their spouse. And sometimes a spouse, if there is one, will catch things

Upsala City July 2, 2018 The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said. On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich, and Joan Olson; Absent: Lana Bartells.

People present: Morrison County Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Library Services Coordinator Great River Regional Library Wanda Erickson, Sheri Johnson, Ervin Hartung, Lisa George, Tanya Trettel, Don Trettel, Public Works Frank Koopmeiners, City Intern Kasey Stevens, and City Clerk/ Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Lange moved to approve minutes from June 4, 2018 Regular City Council Meeting, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to approve minutes from June 18, 2018 Special City Council Meeting, 2nd regarding the enterprise funds by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to approve the agenda, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Library Services Coordinator Great River Regional Library Wanda Erickson, presented to the Council an annual update on the Upsala Branch of GRRL. Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

The Fire Department presented their May minutes.

Lange stated that the three probationary firefighters have completed their training.

Stevens reviewed the July Calendar.

The only things left are to complete the in-floor heat and finish the landscaping around the building.

The Planning and Zoning will have a draft ordinance ready for the next City Council Meeting reducing the speed limits on local city streets.

Stevens explained that the Morrison County Public Works Department will install one of the electronic speed signs on County Road 21 near the high school this month.

Open House for new facilities will be August 16 from 4-7 pm.

The council chose to table discussion on tax abatement for new homes until we have more information.

Olson moved to send out RFP’s to local auditors, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to approve Resolution 7-2-18-1, a resolution to accept a donation of $2,000.00 from the Upsala American Legion Post 350 for fireworks during Heritage Days, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Westrich moved to approve to allow the Upsala Lions Club to have pull tabs in the City Park located at 211 Maple Ave during Upsala Heritage Days, August 11-12, to help finance the replacement of the bathrooms in the park, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried 3 to 1.

The Council set July 26, 2018 at 6:00 pm as the mid-year review of the budget and to start creating the 2019 budget.

Olson approved Upsala’s WHHP part I contingent on the approval of Public Works Superintendent Frank Koopmeiners, 2nd

by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Appreciation to all the residents for their wonderful and constructive survey feedback. The information provided will help direct the Council on how to improve our community.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

The clerk provided copies of the June 4, 2018 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June.

Claims list included claims 31963207 for a total of $20,086.72.

Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mail included a letter from Rahn’s Propane, Demographic Center, Angler Drive final approval letter, the hold-harmless agreement and Tri-City being acquired by Knife River.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray is planning on removing two signs on corner of Brakken and 341st and replacing with curve ahead signs.

Ray will fill in the crack on 130th, and will contact the company the Township had scheduled to do more of the crack filling. Spraying was completed and a bill submitted.

Tree trimming for several roads – a bid from Klemish Tree Service was submitted for $6,500.00.

Mike made the motion to accept the bid, Ron made the second. Ray suggested the Township consider Arden Drive for the next tar project as it could be done with the Angler Drive project. Rescheduled the meeting with Tri-City to Monday, July 9. Ron had a call about a contractor dumping gravel/fill on a township road, that had just been treated for dust control. Also, a question as to when ditch mowing could be started. Ditch mowing bids were reviewed and Ray made the motion to hire Lee Buchholz as he could take a wider swath and had done a good job in the past. A Township resident had a question of who enforces the County ordinance about having two residences on a lake shore property. The Board felt it should be the County as they are doing Planning and Zoning. However, this property owner had no luck when she called

Swanville City June 5, 2018 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Absent: Jim Molitor. Also present: reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, May 8, 2018 were reviewed. A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes as printed. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Swanville Lions Club is requesting a 3 day temporary strong liquor license for the Swanville Carnival June 29, 30 and July 1. Tony Maciej made a motion to give the Swanville Lions Club a 3 day temporary strong liquor license for a fee of $80.00 for June 29, 30 and July 1, 2018. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The Clerk will send in the necessary paper work to the State of MN. Council discussed naming the park next to Springbrook Drive.

Tabled Mayor Lange gave a report on the Swan River trail clean-up. The clean-up work was completed on May 21. Signs need to be added and fence work needs to be done. Mayor Lange stated that the Swanville Sportsmen would help with the signs and fence. The Mayor would like a water trail grand opening Saturday, June 30. With the extra work that needs to be done the Swanville Lions Club has donated $1000.00 toward the project. Norm Carlson made a motion to accept resolution #18-0605 which is the $1000.00 donation from the Swanville Lions Club for the trail improvements.

Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented to the council resolution #18-0605b which states the Swanville Women’s Civic Club is donating $200.00 toward the flowers on main street.

Deb Wood made a motion to accept Resolution #18-0605b accepting the $200.00 for the flowers. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Purchasing land from Diane Piekarski for a new water tower was discussed. Council feels about 3 acres of land would be needed.

No price has been given at this time. Tabled Two building applications were presented to council. Planning and Zoning has approved both applications. Tony Maciej at 316 DeGraff Avenue would like to demolish a garage and add a cement patio and sidewalk to the north of the building. Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

On the morning of July 7th, Stearns County Deputies Adam Wood and Scott Romstad respond to a burglary report at Shady’s Bar in the City of New Munich.

The morning cleaner arrived and found the deadbolt to the door unlocked. Deputies responded and made sure no one was in the bar. They discovered a kitchen window broken out. Further investigation revealed evidence indicating the burglars were on the roof possibly trying to gain entry that way. The bar manager responded and discovered several bottles of alcohol were missing and cash had been taken from the till. The missing cash was approximately $120.00. There were 9 bottles of alcohol taken. They were 2 bottles of Patron, 1 bottle each of Jack Daniels, Yukon Gold, Jose Cuervo, Crown Royal Apple, Crown Royal Vanilla, Crown Royal and Jim Beam. Video of the burglary shows two suspects inside the building.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this burglary and one that occurred on June 22nd. In that burglary, only a single bottle of alcohol was taken. If anyone has information regarding either burglary, please contact the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at 320251-4240.

Council member Maciej stated the problem with semi-trucks on Rhoda Avenue not stopping at the stop sign continues. After discussion, it was decided Maciej will talk with the JennieO manager.

There is the possibility that Rhoda Avenue would be closed off to commercial trucks and be open to residents only.

The Swanville Lions are requesting to put a swinging wall in the pavilion park shelter. The Lions would pay for this project. Council did not have a problem with this project.

It was decided to look at the utility rates after the 2017 audit is presented. Tabled The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held at on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 7:00 pm.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 7:50 pm.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

July 13, 2018: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reports that they have received several complaints of flower vases being taken from the local cemeteries. The flower vases are copper and are attached to the tombstones. These thefts have been reported from three different cemeteries around the Little Falls area and Upsala, MN. The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in this matter.
