Don’t crack under pressure -By Harvey Mackay Once upon a time there was a king who wanted to pick the wisest person among his subjects to be his prime minister.

He decided to put three finalists to an unusual test.

He placed the three candidates together in a room at the palace, and told them the door had been fitted with the most complicated lock ever designed by the Royal Locksmith. “Whoever is able to open the door first will be the Prime Minister,” the king declared.

The pressure in the room was palpable. The three set to work immediately. The first began to work out complicated mathematical formulas in search of the secret combination.

The second scoured thick volumes on lock construction. The third sat quietly

Watching the clock and feeling the need to come up with a solution as soon as possible, the first two worked feverishly to open the door, growing ever more panicked. But then something unexpected happened.

The third candidate walked over to the door and simply turned the handle.

With no effort, the door swung open! It had been unlocked all the time.

For the common sense and activist approach, the king named the third person to the coveted post. Such a shining example of grace under pressure convinced the king that he had indeed chosen well.

Pressure . . . stress . . . angst – call it whatever you want. Let it take control of your mind and you will struggle to open every door that you need to walk through. You must learn to master that pressure or stress in order to make it work for you.

An article in “Bits and Pieces” describes how certain types of stress can actually be good for you. Citing the Mother Nature Network, the article explains how moderate and intermittent amounts of stress, such as a project deadline that gets moved up, can actually help us become more aware of our situations and motivate us to find creative solutions to problems. In addition, it teaches us how to operate outside our usual comfort zone.

Life will hand us occasional curveballs. Understanding how to approach them is the first step to navigating the next one that will inevitably present itself. True, it may throw us off balance at first. But reacting appropriately and swiftly becomes more manageable each time.

“That’s how we build the resilience muscle,” said Jack Groppel, co-founder of the Johnson & Johnson Performance Institute. “Stress is the stimulus for growth, and recovery is when the growth occurs.”

According to “Psychologist World,” it is perhaps unsurprising that the workplace is a key source of stress because we spend much of our lives at work. A recent survey published by the American Psychological Association found that as many as 70% of Americans reported suffering from workplace stress. Separating workrelated tasks, such as resisting the urge to catch up with emails in an evening, from leisure and family time, can help prevent workplace stress from spilling into other areas of your life.

The article goes on to say that despite the negative effects of stress, it can also impact our performance in more positive ways: “The pressure we feel to meet a deadline, accomplish a goal or meet the demands of a schedule, for example, can motivate us Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Gophers Minnesota is called “The Gopher State.”

This name must have been created many years ago, when the gopher population was much larger than it is today.

The common gopher breeds were pocket, striped and gray.

The pocket gophers lived underground and only exposed themselves to light when they were depositing the loose dirt created by their tunneling work. The piles of dirt appearing in fields or yards is an indicator of their presence. Striped and gray gophers make underground tunnels, but the dirt removed doesn’t appear on top of the ground. They spend a lot of time above ground and are seen standing upright by their holes or running across a roadway.

The local townships paid a bounty for trapping pocket gophers. These bounties were created to attempt to reduce the pocket gopher population.

The bounties usually were from $.25 to $.50 each and the bounty claimant either had to produce a tail or two front feet.

Proofs varied by township. This was an excellent way for farm kids to make some extra money, plus the farmers usually also paid the trapper a dime or a quarter for each pocket gopher. The dirt piles left by the pocket gophers usually included both dirt and stones. Farm implements that have a cutting sickle near ground level would sometimes cut into a gopher pile and the stones would destroy the cutting sections. The

farmer would then verbally express his unhappiness because of the damage, and drive the implement home to make repairs.

Striped and gray gophers were either trapped, shot or snared. They were also “drowned out” by pouring water into their holes. Chasing a wet gopher that had been chased out of his hole by water was lots of entertainment for the kids.

Striped gophers seemed to be attracted to the grounds of country schools. This choice of residence created another source of entertainment for the students. When noon recess allowed the students to play outdoors and their ball game became boring, they would take a piece of string and snare a striped gopher. This was done by chasing the gopher into his hole, creating a loop of string around the hole and staying back about 10 feet with the other end of the string in your hand. The gophers would usually stick their head out of the hole after about 5 minutes later to see if what scared them into the hole was still there.

When the head appeared, the end of the string was pulled and you now had a very excited, active gopher on the end of the string. Leading the gopher to the area where the girls were gathered created a good deal of screaming and excitement.

The gopher was often allowed to escape, so that the same stupid gopher could again be snared at a later date.

Yes, they were pests, but they did offer both fun and extra money, along with training for trapping more valuable future fur-bearers.

Indeed, the Society for Human Resource Management found that more than half of workers who put in more than 40 hours a week do so not because of pressure from management, but because those demands are selfimposed. For them, working hard isn’t necessarily so much a stressor as a source of fulfillment.

I personally thrive on pressure.

The more balls I’m juggling, the more I feel like I’m spending my time well. I turn pressure into purpose. True, there are necessary tasks and projects that I don’t relish and work to finish simply so I can cross them off my list. The payoff comes when I see that list with a number of accomplishments at the end of the day. That’s my motivation.

Learning how to deal with pressure and stress is critical to your health and success. Whether that means an attitude adjustment, a job change or a heart attack is up to you. Don’t make your situation more difficult by doing things the hard way.

In other words, walk right up to the

door and try the handle first.

Hands-Free Cell Phone Law

By Stearns County Sheriff By now you have heard the legislature passed a new law for cell phone use that will go into effect on August 1st. So, starting on August 1st, what can you do with your cell phone? In short, it really can’t be in your hand anytime you are driving or stopped at a stop sign or stop light. Also, a driver may not use their phone at any time for video calling, video live-streaming, Snapchat, gaming, looking at video or photos stored on the phone, using non-navigation apps, reading texts and scrolling or typing on the phone.

So how can you go hands-free?

There are a variety of options: Put your phone away while in you car; Use an ear piece to talk on the phone (this can only be in 1 ear, not both); Pair your phone to your vehicle’s Bluetooth (not an option for those of us with more mature cars); Use voice commands on the phone; Use a phone holder to mount your phone and it’s speaker; Purchase an after market Bluetooth device.

How can you do some of this if your vehicle’s more mature, like mine, and doesn’t have all the fancy do-dads? The new law allows a driver to use their cell phone to make calls, text, listen to music or podcasts and get directions, but only by voice commands or single-touch activation without holding the phone.

Can you ever hold your phone while driving? Hand-held phone use is allowed to obtain emergency assistance, if there is an immediate threat to life and safety, or when in an authorized emer-

gency vehicle while performing official duties. I’m sure not everyone is going to like that last bit. We are encouraging all of our deputies to set the example and go hands-free.

Luckily, all but a few of our squads are Bluetooth equipped and several of our deputies have already purchased phone holders or mounts on their own. We are also exploring the option of purchasing a holder or mount for every squad.

With every new law there is an adjustment and learning period. Additionally, some will try and surreptitiously use their phone. We will try education at first, but there comes a time when citations will have to be issued. Secure your phone while driving or go hands-free.

Are there penalties?

Yes. The first ticket is $50 plus court fees and the second and later tickets are $275 plus court fees.

Obituaries Arthur J. Diedrich

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Arthur J. Diedrich, age 90, of Avon who died Thursday at Quiet Oaks Hospice House.

Rev. Gregory Miller, OSB officiated and entombment will be in the parish cemetery.

Art was born June 14, 1929 in Holdingford to Elmer John & Magdalene Mary “Helen” (Lehner) Diedrich. He married Yvonne Ann Budde on October 16, 1952 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He attended Dunwoody Technical Institute and worked for 3M and Honeywell in refrigeration for several years before joining his father at the Avon State Bank in 1960.

He retired from the bank in Dec. 2002 but remained on the Board of Directors until Nov. 2016. During his retirement Art found he enjoyed woodworking and set up a shop in his shed creating fine furniture, cabinets, dulcimers, rocking horses and other cherished items for which he will always be tenderly remembered. He loved playing cards, golfing and fishing with his buddies.

With a ready smile, contagious laugh, and cheerful handshake, Art made friends where ever he went. Always aiming to serve others, Art interjected light-heartedness, happiness, and humor in his interactions with people.

He was a very generous man, not only to family and friends but also to strangers and tried to help out wherever he saw there was need. He did so humbly and often anonymously, not ever expecting anything in return.

Art enjoyed fishing, and along with his wife Yvonne, belonged to the Mr. and Mrs. Fishing Club of Avon. He spent many winters deep-sea fishing in Texas, and took several trips salmon fishing in Alaska with friends and family. Art loved to involve his grandchildren in the enjoyment of the fishing experiences. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies and golfing in his earlier years.

Art was very involved in the city of Avon throughout his life. He and his wife Yvonne were named Citizens of the Decade in 2019 by the city of Avon for their contributions of time, effort, and financial support in the development of numerous parks, gardens, and buildings. Art was a founding member of the Avon Lions Club and was the Chairman of Avon Parks Board.

Art is survived by his wife of 66 years, Yvonne of Avon; children, Glenn (Deborah) Diedrich of Avon, Diane (Daniel) Zimmermann of Avon, James Diedrich of Woodbury, Teresa Kramer (Morgan) of Prior Lake, Jane Diedrich of Zionsville, IN, Bonnie Singh (David) of Falcon Heights, Ann (Bruce) Meredith of Avon; 15 grandchildren, Natalie, Amelia, Patrick, Andrew, Aerin, Thomas, Alyssa, Alexa, Cerise, Kimberly, Andrea, Sadie, Lauren, Jenna, and Jake; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jordan; brothers; Elmer John and Andrew Diedrich.

The Requiem Mass for Francis M. Marstein, age 90 of Bowlus, was held Wednesday, July 17 at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in St. Cloud, MN. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Arrangements were with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford.

Francis was born on May 10, 1929 in Minneapolis to Martin and Susan (Jendro) Marstein. He graduated from the Little Falls High School in 1948 and helped on his parents farm until he entered the United States Air Force in 1948, where he served until 1952. After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota and worked at various jobs.

He married Beatrice Schlag on July 7, 1954 in St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale.

The couple lived in the twin cities area until returning to Bowlus in 1963 when they

took over the dairy farm from Beatrice’s parents. Francis was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church and the Bowlus American Legion.

Francis is survived by his children, Douglas (Sue) Marstein, Holdingford; Linda Harlander, Holdingford; James Marstein, Little Falls; Sharon (Bruce) Zilke, Hanover; Joyce (Dwight) Orton, Holdingford; Patty (David) Vos, Bowlus; Alan (Janel) Marstein, Bowlus; Carolyn (John) Kulla, Bowlus; Mary (Joel) Evens, Belgrade; 49 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Martin (Kathryn) Marstein, Chandler, AZ; Rosie Enghusen, Elk River; Dolores (Ernest) Popp, Rice; Donald (Phyllis) Marstein, Bowlus; Eleanor Hastings, Effie; Evelyn (Richard) Barrow, Effie and sister-in-law, Rosella Marstein, Coon Rapids.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beatrice in 2007; his son, Roland Marstein, his brother, Chester Marstein, his sons-in-law, Ken Harlander and Jeffrey Rosenberger and brothers-in-law, Donald Enghusen and Bill Hastings.

Clarence “Guy” Andersen Clarence “Guy” V. Andersen 78 of Albany died Monday, July 15, 2019, at his home in rural Albany. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am Friday, July 19, 2019, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Interment will be at the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 4-8:00 p.m.

Thursday at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with parish prayers at 4:00 the visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church.

Clarence “Guy” Vernon Andersen was born on December 8, 1940, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Clarence A. and Mary (Blum) Andersen. The family moved to Brooten, Minnesota where Guy went on to graduate from Brooten High School with the Class of 1959. In 1961 Guy met Georgine Svoboda at the roller-skating rink in Paynesville. On October 13, 1962, the two were united in marriage at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. This union was blessed with five boys and six girls. The family made their home in Minneapolis and Paynesville before settling in Albany. Guy worked as a Highway Maintenance worker for the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 35 years before his retirement in 1998. Guy was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. He also served on the Albany Township Zoning Board for many years and was active in 4-H. Guy enjoyed camping, traveling, beekeeping, welding, fishing, and dancing. He would often go to

flea markets and auctions where he would “buy junk and sell antiques.” Guy and Georgine lived on a hobby farm where Guy enjoyed raising animals and was known for selling pumpkins, sweet corn, and honey.

Guy and Georgine wintered in Mission, Texas for 10 years and Guy loved traveling to Mexico from there. Guy had the gift of being able to talk to anyone at any time. He was always friendly and lots of fun to be around.

Clarence V. Andersen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Georgine; children: Tim (Connie) Andersen of Princeton, Randy (Jane) Andersen of Big Lake, Becky (Greg) Pemble of Cold Spring, Brenda (Tom) Fischer of Albany, Deb Schmitt of Paynesville, Steve (Marie) Andersen of Albany, Pauline Krebs of Minneapolis, Cindy (Rick) Klaphake of Freeport, Darrel (Heather) Andersen of Barnesville, Karen Andersen of Minneapolis, and John Andersen of St. Paul; 24 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Clarence is also survived by his siblings, Mary Jane (Russel) Radenbaugh of New Ulm, Joyce Hofmann (Sheldon Pearse) of New Ulm, and Dennis Andersen of Pahrump, NV; brother-inlaw, Henry Svoboda; sisters-in-law, Judy Andersen, and Dee Andersen; and many nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Verle, Cledus and Keith “Monty” Andersen.

Lloyd W. Butkowski

Lloyd W. Butkowski, age 60, died Monday, July 8, 2019 at his home in rural Millwood Township, St. Rosa, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held on July 15 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Lloyd William Butkowski was born November 28, 1958 in Melrose, Minnesota to Arnold and Lorraine (Bruns) Butkowski.

He graduated from Melrose High School and continued his education at Alexandria Technical College with an emphasis in agricultural management. Lloyd worked on the home farm his entire life; it was a lifestyle he cherished. He was a dairy farmer

initially and more recently had been raising beef cattle and crop farming. His brother, nieces and nephews fondly remember Lloyd sharing his observations of nature with them on long walks around the farm with his dog trailing behind. He raised fancy breeds of chickens, and loved to fish with his dad and brother. Birds were another interest that he shared with family members. A quiet, kind man of deep faith, he was a life-long member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Survivors include his brother, Ralph (Janet) Butkowski of Roseville; nieces and nephews, Jill (Al) Heinn, Bruce (Leticia) Blommel, Jason (Misty) Blommel, Aaron (Richelle) Blommel, Bobbi Jo (Doug) Freie, Justin (Megan) Hynnek, Kimberly (Daniel) Stach, and Ann (Luke) Gliddon.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Pat Hynnek and Mary Jo Blommel.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Talking about serious subjects with kids is not always easy. A good strategy is to start small and just talk about every day topics: friends and peers, value and character, school and learning and so forth. Then, talking about alcohol and drugs will happen more smoothly.

To help parents strike up conversations with young people, Todd County CAD has produced and distributed Conversation Card Packets to restaurants, businesses and clinics over the past several years. The packets contain both serious and fun questions to help families make it a habit to stay connected.

Asfelds to Host U of MN Extension Dairy Field Day in Todd County

By Brenda Miller, University of Minnesota Extension Bruce & Rose Asfeld of Osakis will host the 2019 Todd County Dairy Field Day on Tuesday, July 30th from 10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Asfeld’s farm is located at 10804 137th Ave., Osakis, MN, which is right at the top of the I-94 West Union exit. Watch for signs. Refreshments and ice cream treats will be provided.

Bruce and Rose Asfeld started dairy farming in 1994 at their current site near West Union. Their farm has undergone many exciting changes over the years.

They currently milk about 125 Holsteins in a double 8 swing parabone parlor with automatic take-offs that was retrofitted into their tiestall barn in 2009.

The freestall barn started out as a compost barn and 104 stalls were installed in 2012. Part of the barn remains as a compost bedded area for special needs

If we are obedient to God, then we can be confident of His blessings, favor, gifts and a sense of His presence in our lives. Our Psalmist reminds us that God “speaks peace to His people and to His saints.” His peace is what brings us “wholeness and completeness” and unites us with Him. It dissolves the fear we have of Him and removes the guilt that we carry within us from being disobedient to Him. So our Psalmist wisely adds, “but let them not return to their folly” - or perhaps a more appropriate translation of the word “folly” is “stupidity.” What might this mean?

Often we become “presumptuous” and assume that we deserve God’s blessings. We take an inventory of our lives and things appear to be “just about as wonderful as wonderful can be.” We have no “fear” of God and take His goodness for granted. “What stupidity!” says the Psalmist. “Be careful of falling into Your past sinful ways.”

Automotive Advice from The Under the Hood® Show

Dear Motor Medics, I want to repair the rear defroster on my Chrysler Town and Country van. We haul a lot of stuff in the van for our small business and over the years items have scratched the defroster grid on the glass and I assume that is why it does not work. The button on the dash still lights up. What do I need to do to fix the grid? Some spots are scratched up to an inch or so.

-Mark in Cushing, Oklahoma Dear Mark, If you have any spots in the defroster grid that are cut you will have an open circuit and that will stop the operation of the defroster. The grid needs to be protected from objects that may scratch it or from things like ordinary tape.

We have seen many temporary license plates taped to the window and when removed the grid gets torn. One way to protect a working grid is with window tint if it is legal in your area. Repairing a broken grid can be tricky. There is a liquid product available at some parts stores that will bridge the gap of a cut wire, but it is not meant for long gaps such as you described. If you have several cuts with some being extensive you may opt to replace the glass with a good used part. A used replacement rear glass is a much cheaper alternative to get your defroster back up and running.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I just purchased a 2008 Infinity sedan and would like to have a second set of wheels and more aggressive tires for winter. The vehicle also has a tiny spare that is much smaller than the other tires. I want to know if I can get another set of wheels for the car and where I would do that. I also want to know if I must stick with the smaller spare or if I

can swap it out with a full-size tire.

-Steve in Nebraska City, Nebraska Dear Steve, Infinity is a nice car, and most have some very expensive factory wheels.

We have several customers of our shop that use a different set of wheels with special tires for the winter season. Most of them chose to go with a set of used replacement wheels that matched what they already had but in some cases such as the more expensive wheels found on higher end cars like the Infinity they purchased a new set of custom wheels for the drier months and used the factory wheels for the rest of the year.

Your local tire shop should be able to help you with options. A full size spare may be an option too but remember the storage space for the spare is often only large enough to store the compact spare so you may have to keep it in the trunk sliding around and taking up valuable room.

I know this is good idea, but I just don’t have the passion for it she does. There are also some things I really don’t want to give up. Do you have some suggestions for getting motivated?

-Ken Dear Ken, Goals and dreams always have a better chance of coming true if you have a written game plan. Sit down with your wife at the beginning of each month, and help her do a written budget. Give every dollar a name on paper before you spend anything.

Contrary to popular belief, doing a budget is not torture. It’s also not just a math exercise. It’s an opportunity for you both to have input on what you want to accomplish in life and how to make it happen. After two people are married they become “as one.” And that’s how decisions should be made in a marriage—facing all the problems, dreams, and fears together.

Once you sit down and do a budget, I think you’ll see where you can cut back and make things happen that you thought were impossible before. You may have to give up a few things for a little while, but when you see how quickly you can get ahead by making your money behave, I’ve got a feeling

you’ll get excited about the possibilities!

-Dave Dear Dave, We’ve followed your advice and put our kids on commissions instead of allowances. The problem is our 8-yearold. He never buys anything, and he seems to be very frugal by nature. Do you have any advice for teaching him it is okay to spend money sometimes?

-Stephen Dear Stephen, You’re absolutely right for wanting to teach him wise spending habits.

Each of us has the personality of being either a saver or a spender. As parents, we should help our kids grow in areas where they have weaknesses, and find ways to enhance their strengths.

Give him praise for being such a good saver, but gently encourage him to spend a little, too. Spending is one of the rewards of work and disciplined saving. You might urge him to pick out something he really wants, and help him make a plan to save enough money to buy that item. Once he has enough money for the purchase, turn it into a celebration of reaching that goal.

There are three things you can do with money—spend it, save it, and give it to others. Focusing too much, or too little, on any of these is not financially or spiritually healthy.

New Todd County Land Split Surveys Required Starting January 1, 2018 all property line adjustments and administrative splits will require a signoff from the zoning authority prior to recording. Beginning on June 1, 2019 all of the land splits and adjustments will require a land survey as a part of the application.

Property splits and property line adjustments without the benefit of review by the planning office can result in disappointment for the land owners involved. Planning your property line adjustment or land split carefully should result in legal parcels that will meet your needs and be buildable in the future.

Property line adjustments are used between adjoining and consenting landowners to solve a parcel access or property size issue. Line adjustments can be completed in AF1, AF2, R-2, and R-10 zoned land. A survey may or may not be required depending on the complexity of the line adjustment. A land split differs from a line adjustment in that it involves creation of a new land parcel that did not exist previously.

Walkers Support States Largest Epilepsy Fundraiser

The Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) is hosting its annual Rise Above Seizures Walk to raise awareness of epilepsy and support people with seizures. One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime, and one in 10 will have a seizure.

The St. Cloud Rise Above Seizures Walk will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1st at Lake George, located at 1101 7th Street South in St. Cloud, MN. Walkers from 20+ counties across central Minnesota will come together on this one night to support the 60,000 people in our service area with epilepsy.

“The walk is important because it allows all of Leah’s supporters to get together in one place. Leah has two families and so many friends that are like family; this is the one time of year we can all get together and support her as one,” says Caitlin Hunstock-Jansson, a long-time walk team captain.

A total of five communities (Duluth, Fargo/Moorhead, Rochester, St. Cloud, and Twin Cities Metro) will welcome walkers to the single largest fundraising and awareness event in Minnesota and North Dakota to benefit people with seizures. Additionally, 100% of the funds raised in each city will be reinvested back into that community.

The FAFSA If your kids are headed to college— or currently in college—and haven’t filled out the FAFSA for the 2019–2020 school year, they need to get on that now.

Go to FAFSA.gov to find the form. Colleges use the FAFSA to determine how much money to offer your kids through scholarships, grants, and student loans.

Just make sure your kids don’t accept any student loan offers they might get.

We’re going to college debt-free, people!

Luckily, the FAFSA isn’t as confusing as it sounds and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Every student should fill it out, regardless of their family’s financial situation. There’s no income cutoff to be eligible for aid, and your kids won’t know how much aid they could actually get unless they try.

Scholarship Applications The FAFSA form isn’t the only way to get scholarships. There are thousands of scholarships available to students for all kinds of reasons (getting good grades, writing a killer essay, or being a member of a minority group). I’d encourage your kids to set specific goals

Healing Touch practitioners are community members and patient care practitioners including nurses, patient care assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, chaplains and others who desire an in-depth understanding of healing work that uses energy-based concepts.

Participants learn: -Principles and practice of Healing Touch -Energy system concepts related to

health -Basic energy principles and assessment of the energy system, field, centers and functions -Meditation for centering and maintaining energetic flow -Healing techniques -Principles of self-healing -Legal and professional aspects of touch therapies, -Ethical conduct and standards of practice, and integrity in Healing Touch -Cost is $160.00 for CentraCare Health employees and volunteers; $309.00 for all others. There also is a textbook fee of $40. Tuition reimbursement may be available through a grant provided by CentraCare Foundation for individuals who want to become Healing Touch Volunteers at St. Cloud Hospital after completing courses 1 and 2. Course 2 is Dec. 6-7. The volunteering commitment is 6 hours per month for one year.

Aquatic Invasive Species Program Completes Fourth year Minnesota is fortunate to have 11,842 lakes and the highest per capita water craft ownership in the U.S. However, all those boats moving from lake to lake can create problems since boats and trailers easily move vegetation, mud, and water between water bodies with the result being non-native invasive species infestations. Todd SWCD has been implementing the AIS Prevention program since 2015 to reduce the spread of AIS that can negatively impact our lakes. Over 29,000 boat inspections have been completed on 30 different lakes. Signage, monitoring, and education and outreach have also been a part of the program funded through state AIS Prevention Funds.

On average, over 500 boats in Todd County are identified as unclean by AIS inspectors and prevented from moving materials between lakes. Inspectors can only cover about 10% of landings so this equates to about 5000 unclean launches made each year which poses a very real AIS infestation risk.

Boat inspection data from 2015 to 2018 revealed that boaters from an average of 21 states launch boats in Todd County each year. An estimated 1890 boat launches are made from out-ofstate craft explaining how AIS problems can leapfrog around the country. Boat inspectors record the last lake visited as

reported by the boat owner. Many of the lakes reported are known to have AIS infestations.

A plan to incorporate what was learned during the first four years of the AIS program is being developed and will be implemented again this boating season. The overall goal is to prevent additional AIS infestations. Help us accomplish our goal and be sure your boat is CLEAN – DRAINED – AND DRY before launching.
