ABCs of public speaking -By Harvey Mackay

It’s been said there are two times in life when you are truly alone: just before you die and just before you deliver a fiveminute speech.

Stage fright can be terrifying, but it needn’t be paralyzing.

Delivering over a thousand speeches teaches a person a thing or two about getting through to the audience.

Because I am often asked for advice from nervous speakers, I have developed my ABCs of public speaking.

A is for audience. Learn all you can about those who will be in attendance so that you can tailor your remarks to hold their interest.

B is for body language. Move around, gesture and use facial expressions to demonstrate your enthusiasm for your topic.

C is for creativity. Don’t be afraid to use props, PowerPoint or audience participation to add sparkle and surprise.

Even the most serious topics can benefit from a creative approach to make them memorable.

D is for deliver. Your presentation needs to have a focused message that leaves the audience with significant takehome value.

E is for eye contact, a critical feature of an effective speaker. Connecting with your audience can’t happen without it.

F is for feedback. Ask for immediate, unfiltered responses so you can continue to improve your skills. And don’t forget to debrief yourself after the event, including what worked well and what didn’t.

G is for grammar. Pay attention to the language you use. Make certain it is correct and concise.

H is for homework. Study the organization you are addressing: What are the problems, issues, concerns and opportunities. Mispronouncing names is

I is for introduction. Make sure that the person introducing you is a real pro.

Provide a prepared introduction with your pertinent information.

J is for jokes. Try them out on several people to make sure they are appropriate and amusing. Humor, anecdotes and stories add so much to a speech as long as they are not offensive. Plays don’t open up on Broadway, they open in New Haven.

K is for knowledge. Speakers have to demonstrate a real grasp of the subject at hand in order to be taken seriously.

L is for lighting. People laugh more and retain more in brightly lit rooms. Dim the lights only if you are using PowerPoint presentations, and only as long as necessary.

M is for masking tape. Seal noisy door latches to avoid distractions. Block off the back rows of chairs to keep the audience up front.

O is for opening. In order to grab the audience’s attention immediately, you need a spectacular opener.

P is for practice, practice, practice.

There is no substitute for preparation.

Q is for Q & A. Take questions five minutes before you are ready to close, so that you have the last word and control the ending.

R is for room size. If you have any control over the venue, insist that the room seat only the planned number of audience members. A room that is too big destroys rapport.

S is for smile. Let the audience see that you are pleased/happy/honored to be asked to speak. A smile adds instant warmth.

T is for Toastmasters International, the organization that I recommend for anyone who wants to hone their speaking skills.

It’s tremendous training for speakers at all levels of ability.

U is for unforgettable. Make your speech memorable with a well-organized message peppered with clever stories and examples, sprinkled with humor, and wrapped up with a great summary.

V is for voice. Listen to yourself on tape so that you can adjust tempo, tone,

W is for wisdom. You want your message to teach and inform. I’m particularly fond of starting the lessons in my speeches with a “Mackay’s Moral,” words of wisdom that drive home my point.

X is for experience. (Yes, I know it starts with “e”.) The best way to become a better speaker is to speak as often as you can.

Y is for you. Take pains to look your best.

Z is for zip it up. A smashing closing is as important as a gripping opening.

Obituaries Lorraine Delores Feia

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Lorraine Delores Feia, age 86 of Holdingford took place at 11 AM, Monday, July 14, 2014 at All Saints Catholic ChurchSt. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Father David Grundman officiated, and burial took place in the parish cemetery following the mass. Lorraine died peacefully in her sleep Thursday morning at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Lorraine was born July 10th, 1928 to Anton and Anastasia (Kollodge) Pilarski on a farm in Holding Township. She married Cyril Feia Sr. on September 27th, 1947 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. Together they raised their seven children on the farm where Lorraine worked as a home-maker and mother. Lorraine was also active with the Holdingford High School where she worked in laundry and the kitchen. Lorraine loved the simple things in life including her jigsaw puzzles, embroidery work, and baking in

her kitchen (especially her wonderful coffee cakes). She also enjoyed being outside, be it working in her gardens, blueberry picking, attending her grandkids sporting events, or simply reading books in the boat while fishing with her husband Cyril. She was an avid fan of Minnesota sports including baseball, hockey, the Husker’s. She was an active member of St. Hedwig’s church where over the years she was involved in funeral lunch committees and the Rosary Sodality.

She is survived by her children Cyril (Roseanne) Feia Jr., Holdingford; Lynn (Ervin) Warzecha, Little Falls; Leslie (Kevin) Ebnet, Albany; Myron (Judy) Feia, Avon; her daughters-in-law Eileen Feia, St. Cloud; Sharon Popp, Pierz; Debbie Feia, Avon; her 25 grandchildren, 31 greatgrandchildren; and her siblings Marcella Johnson, Minneapolis; Mary Ann Melcher, Minneapolis; Bernadine Seitz, Waconia; Martin (Delores) Pilarski, Avon; and Evelyn (David) Mrosla, Bowlus.

She is preceded in death by her parents Anton and Anastasia Pilarski, her husband Cyril Feia Sr. who passed in 1996, her sons Raymond, Gregory, and Kevin Feia, her brothers John, Lawrence, Raymond, Edward, Francis, and Leonard Pilarski, and her sisters Emily Edge, Rosebele Sandoval, and Eleanor Umerski.

Barbara Jean Hinnenkamp, age 73 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on We d n e s d a y, July 9, 2014 at the CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vincent Lieser officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Barbara Jean Wheatly was born May 20, 1941 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Regina Wheatly and was adopted by her parents, Remi and Irene (Fern) Verbeke.

She graduated from Melrose High School in 1959. She was united in marriage to Luverne Hinnenkamp on September 2, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Grey Eagle with interment following in Moses Dane Cemetery.

Loretta Yvonne McElhaney was born March 9, 1948 in Granite Falls, Minnesota to VaneCameron and Elvira (Anderson) McElhaney. In the early 80’s Loretta moved “Up North” where she enjoyed life. Later in life, Loretta went back to college. On August 21, 2013 she retired from Coborn’s where she worked for 20 years. Loretta enjoyed

Shirley A. Deters, age 75 of Ward Springs, died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, July 16 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating.

Interment was in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Shirley Agnes Kuhlmann was born November 1, 1938 in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Theodore and Antoinette (Terwey) Kuhlmann. She was united in marriage to Alex Deters in 1956 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Ward Springs and later divorced. Shirley was a homemaker most of her life but also worked at Dan Marsh and Montgomery Wards. She lived in St. Cloud for a number of years until moving into her home in Ward Springs.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Family and church were very important in Shirley’s life.

She loved spending time with her family and friends and faithfully prayed the rosary

spent her time taking care of her family. She also worked at the Melrose Hospital as a nurse’s aide and at The Garland in Melrose.

Barbara was proud to be a ten year volunteer at St. Michael’s Hospice in Sauk Centre.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Sts. Bernard and Elizabeth Council, the Red Hats Society, the Mission Card Club, and was secretary for the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary for four years. Barbara enjoyed traveling, playing cards and BUNKO, and loved visiting with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Luverne Hinnenkamp of Melrose; children, Kenneth (Lynnell) Hinnenkamp of Albany and Christa (Ken) Heinen of Avon; and seven grandchildren, Corey and Brayden Hinnenkamp, Jena, Mitchel, Chantel, Caihley, and Chabree Heinen.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Jim Verbeke.

Serving as casket bearers were Mitchel Heinen, Corey Hinnenkamp, Glen Hinnenkamp, Dan Frieler, Jim Verbeke, Chantel Heinen, Ken Heinen, and Sara Nietfeld. Cross bearer was Cheryl Olson and scripture bearer was Jena Heinen.

Denis J. Wensman

Denis J. Wensman, age 77 of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, July 19 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

Inurnment will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Denis Joseph Wensman was born October 2, 1936 in Freeport, Minnesota to Anton and Rose (Bueckers) Wensman. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Korf on May 9, 1960 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Denis worked as a truck driver and farmer for a number of years and also owned his own bait shop. He last worked as a supervisor for Jennie-O Turkey Store, retiring in 1999.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald, Greenwald Lions, Green Grove Rod and Gun Club,

and the American Legion Post 67 in Sauk Centre. Denis was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and also enjoyed playing cards. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

Denis is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Wensman of Greenwald; children, Robin (Tena) Wensman of Sauk Centre, Karen (Paul) Zimmerman of Duluth, Kathy (Jeff) Adams of Sauk Centre, and Ryan (Melinda) Wensman of Melrose; grandchildren, Zack and Zane Wensman, Sarah and Andrew Zimmerman, Nicholas and Morgan Adams, and Ashlyn and Owen Wensman; brothers and sisters, Bob (Shirley) Wensman of Sauk Centre, Linus (Mary Lou) Wensman of Crystal, Arlene Wensman of Belgrade, Carol (David) Mott of Onamia, Lois (Mike) of Des Parte, Georgia, and Cynthia (Victor) Cohen of Nevada; sisters-in-law, Marcy Wensman of Arizona and Pat Wensman of Paynesville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Rose Wensman; brothers, Ado and Melvin Wensman; granddaughter, Addison Lee Wensman; and father and mother-in-law, Herman and Catherine Korf.

She’s investing $600 a month in a universal life insurance policy worth $250,000 because she wants to leave something behind when she dies.

What could she invest this money in, other than the life insurance policy, in order to leave an estate?

-Steve Dear Steve, This is a good question. You don’t use life insurance to leave an estate. It’s a bad idea. You leave an estate by saving and investing. The only people who will tell you to use a life insurance policy to leave an estate are life insurance salesmen.

Unless she’s ill, I wouldn’t keep the policy. Instead, I’d do some long-term investing. It won’t take long to get to $250,000 with $7,200 a year. It’s the kind of thing that sounds like it’ll take forever, but you’ve got to remember you’ve got growth and interest in the equation. I wouldn’t put money into a life insurance policy at age 71, unless there’s someone being left behind who really needs the money — and it doesn’t sound like there is in this case.

It would probably take about 13 years for the money to turn into $250,000.

Assuming she’s healthy, I’d rather do that and bet on her living. That way, she can leave an estate and avoid the expense and rip-off part of the universal life policy.

Hopefully, with your very large amount of student loan debt, you also have a very large income. Believe it or not, there are some really sad situations out there where people have gone $200,000 into debt for a four-year degree in a field where they make $50,000 a year. That kind of thinking and behavior is ridiculous, but it’s out there.

Whatever you do, Jade, don’t treat this student loan debt as if it were a mortgage. In other words, don’t let it hang around for years and years and years. You’ve got to get focused and intense about paying off this mess and getting on with your life.

Remember, your income is your largest wealth-building tool. You can’t save and plan for the future when all your money is flying out the door to pay back debt!

High transportation costs bite ag. industry

One hundred million dollars.

That’s the amount of money the Dept. of Agriculture figures Minnesota grain farmers lost in the past three months because of the high cost of transporting their commodities to market.

The announcement of that figure was made last Thursday by Commissioner Dave Frederickson at a meeting in Alexandria that was devoted to the topic of agricultural freight movement.

Among the reasons given for the higher cost of transportation were congestion on rail lines and a bitterly cold winter that backed up service. Over the past several years, the cost passed back to farmers by elevators to move grain to market has usually ranged from 30 to 60 cents per bushel, depending on the time of year. This past winter and spring, that cost, called “basis,” ranged up to $1 per bushel.

One of the speakers at the meeting was Mike Steenhoek, who is executive director of a national organization called the Soy Transportation Coalition. He said the cost of transportation affects farmers directly, as that cost is always passed back to them. Currently, Steenhoek said, the United States is the most competitive country

in the world for low-cost commodities because of our transportation system. He compared the cost of shipping a ton of soybeans to China from Minneapolis and from Brazil. With our rail and inland waterway system, the transportation cost from Minnesota amounts to 18 percent of the total cost of those beans in China. From Brazil, because most of their soybeans must be shipped long distances by truck, that transportation cost increases to 25 percent of the cost of those beans.

However, Steenhoek cautioned that our country may be losing that competitive edge. He said, “We used to be a country that invested in our future. Today, we seem to be just spending money, with no thought about the return to investment.

Our transportation infrastructure needs a lot of work.”

John Miller of the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad also spoke to the group. He said growth continues among nearly all commodities, including both coal and crude oil. In 2009, the BNSF shipped 11,000 carloads of crude, while that number grew to 400,000 this past year.

The movement of grain has also increased, he said, and the infrastructure to move it quickly has also improved. The first shuttle loading facility on the BNSF was put into operation in 1996, while today the number of shuttle loaders has increased to 223.

To help facilitate this increase in traffic, Miller said his railroad will spend $5 billion for capital improvements this year.

They are adding 500 new locomotives and will continue “double tracking” their most heavily traveled areas. Having, in effect, two main lines side by side in places like Minot, North Dakota, will help increase the flow of all freight heading west.

were only five or six days during January and February when the length of trains was NOT shortened due to extremely cold temperatures. Trains’ air brakes don’t function as well in those conditions, so units that usually were 7,500 feet long had to be shortened to 4,500 feet.

Miller concluded by saying, “We are committed and will expand to meet this increased demand.”

Sir Walter Scott was a prominent novelist and poet whose writings were well known, respected and read throughout the world. As he approached death he called for his son-in-law and said, “Bring me the Book!”

Members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Robert Maciej, Brian Lange, Joan Olson, Dennis Westrich. City Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische.

The City Council meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson.

Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to accept the minutes from the June 2nd, 2014 Regular City Council Meeting. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded by Council Member Robert Maciej to accept the agenda with the addition of cross walk locations, promotion for the car show taking place during Heritage Days, and the building located at 104 South Main Street.

Motion carried unanimously.

Guests and Presentations: Jeremy Carlson was present to extend an offer to paint the whistle for the Emergency Siren at the Fire Hall. Motion made by Council Member Brian and seconded by Council Member Robert Maciej to accept Jeremy Carlson’s offer to paint the whistle for the Emergency Siren located

The City’s need for a Perpetual Utility, Roadway, and Drainage Easement as part of the Improvements Project from Voronyak was discussed. Voronyak will be in touch with the City to further discuss the Easement.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report, Frank Koopmeiners: Water and Sewer usage is up for the month, but it seems to be coming down this month.

• Frank informed the Members of the Council that the new lawn mower is working well and getting a lot of use this season.

Fire Department Report, Lange: The Fire Department has not yet heard back from FEMA regarding the grant application.

Planning Commission, Lange: Minutes were presented to the City Council.

UCDC, Olson): Minutes were presented to the City Council.

Recreation Board, Johnson: No minutes to report.

City Council had a brief discussion regarding the 2014 Walnut Avenue Improvements Project and will discuss further updates at a Special Meeting scheduled for July 21st, 2014 at 6 PM. City Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische informed the City Council that the Board of Equalization Training is set for Tuesday, September 16th at 7 PM. New Business: City Clerk/ Treasurer Reva Mische presented the 2015 Preliminary Budget to the City Council for discussion and review.

Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to approve a Fireworks permit for the Heritage Days Fireworks display held on August 9th.

The City Council discussed the feasibility of purchasing the building at 104 South Main Street. Council Member Dennis Westrich will look into demolition costs to bring to the next City Council Meeting.

One in Five Fatal Crashes Caused By Illegal, Unsafe Speed “I didn’t know I was speeding.”

“There must be something wrong with my speedometer.” “I’m not from around here.” Law enforcement officers have heard all kinds of excuses from speeders, and they’ll probably hear many more July 10-27. That’s when nearly 400 Minnesota law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to combat traffic crashes, deaths and serious injuries caused by illegal and unsafe speeding.

Speed is a leading contributing factor in fatal and serious injury crashes, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety (DPS/ OTS). In the last three years (2011-2013), illegal and unsafe speed was attributed to 212 fatal crashes, 235 deaths and 666 serious injuries. In many crashes, additional factors such as alcohol and distraction often combine with speeding to wreck cars and lives.

“Far too many motorists ignore speed limits and put all of our lives at risk on the road by speeding,” said Donna Berger, OTS director. “There’s greater potential to lose control, you have less time to avoid a crash, and the chances are higher of being killed or seriously injured.”

Data shows that speeding doesn’t save much time. Traveling at 55 mph versus 45 mph for a 10-mile journey only shaves off about two and one-half minutes of travel time.

Minnesota recognizes July 12 as Statewide Speed Enforcement Day, and drivers will notice increased attention from law enforcement as all agencies across the state will be specifically targeting speeding violations. An enhanced enforcement for speed campaign also was conducted June 16-20 because data shows the summer months are the deadliest on our roads.

Minnesota Law: The Minnesota statute on speed limits requires motorists to drive with due care: • Every driver must drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for the conditions.

• Motorists must be aware of actual and potential hazards on the highway and use due care in operating a vehicle.

Costs of speeding violations vary by county but typically ramp up to at least $120 for traveling 10 mph over the limit. Motorists stopped at 20 mph over the speed limit face double the fine, and those ticketed at more than 100 mph can lose their license for six months.

• Final reports on enhanced enforcement for distracted driving during April 11-20 reported 827 texting citations from 308 law enforcement agencies.

• In a continuing effort to advance traffic safety in Minnesota, DPS awarded new federal grants totaling more than $8.5 million for regional partners to support overtime traffic safety enforcement and educational efforts through September 2014.

Alexa Sandbakken Named Marketing Specialist for Heartland Security

Heartland Security announces the appointment of Alexa Sandbakken of Avon to Marketing Specialist. Heartland Security specializes in residential and commercial alarm systems as well as home medical monitoring systems, serving southern and western Minnesota and northern Iowa.
