Perception vs. Reality -By Harvey Mackay A friend was flying from San Francisco to Los Angeles. After a 45-minute delay in taking off, they then had to make an unexpected stop in Sacramento. The flight attendant announced there would be another 45-minute delay, and if they wanted to get off the aircraft, they could re-board in 30 minutes.

Everyone got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. My friend noticed him as he walked by and could tell he had flown this flight before because his guide dog lay quietly underneath his seat. Just then the pilot approached the man and called him by name.

“Keith, we’re in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”

Keith replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.”

All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot, who was wearing sunglasses, walk off the plane with the guide dog! People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, they also were trying to change airlines!

Unfortunately, perception equates to reality for many. But perception and

reality have very different meanings.

The problem happens when perception becomes a person’s reality. They see what they expect or want to see, disregarding what is actually true.

Psychiatrist Jim Taylor said: “Perception acts as a lens through which we view reality. Our perceptions influence how we focus on, process, remember, interpret, understand, synthesize, decide about and act on, reality. In doing so, our tendency is to assume that how we perceive reality is an accurate representation of what reality truly is.

“But it’s not,” he adds. “The problem is that the lens through which we perceive is often warped in the first place by our genetic predispositions, past experiences, prior knowledge, emotions, preconceived notions, self-interest and cognitive distortions.”

For example, take a car accident.

You can ask several people that witnessed the accident, and many of them saw it differently. That’s why eyewitness identifications often become issues in crime investigations. The National Academy of Sciences recently convened a panel of experts to undertake a comprehensive study of current practice and use of eyewitness testimony, with an eye toward understanding why identification errors occur and what can be done to prevent them. Bottom line, they found that eyewitness accounts are often wrong.

An article in “The New Yorker” magazine cited psychologist Elizabeth Phelps, who concluded in a 2011 study that when an event is particularly exciting or traumatic, the memory is seared into the brain, often at the expense of the peripheral details. The focus of the witness’ memory is upon the action which took place and not upon the circumstances under which it took place, making it difficult for a jury to refute what a witness claims to have seen or heard. But as Phelps’ study showed, just because witnesses are confident about

their version of events does not mean their accounts are accurate.

Businesses and organizations need to pay attention to how they are actually perceived by customers and prospects.

Does your target audience see your signature products seen as innovative, well-priced, useful and available? Are customers swayed by comparison advertising that presents your goods as inferior or not worth the cost?

In reality, you may have the best products, the best people, the fairest prices and still have a negative perception.

One bad online review can rapidly sway public perception and destroy years of building a good name. The most difficult part is that the review may not even be true. And you have to work harder than ever to repair the damage, not necessarily knowing where the information is coming from. It’s not fair, but it is reality.

Be aware of your public profile and use every option available to keep your reputation positive. Put customer service at the top of the list for every employee, from the factory floor to the sales force to the executive suite.

The issue of perception is not a recent phenomenon. Look back to the days of second century Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who observed, “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”

I’m not sure I’d go that far, but I see some truth in that statement. A couple thousand years later, we are still at the mercy of human nature!

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Dust Storms In the 1930’s there was an extremely devastating drought which covered much of the area south and west of us. The drought lasted for most of the 1930’s. It wasn’t as severe in this area, since there were a couple of years with natural rainfall between the dry years.

The winds picked up the dried ground and created dust clouds so thick that daytime was as dark as night. We have seen pictures of the sand drifts in Nebraska and Oklahoma which were many feet deep. The sand was blown through the cracks along the windows with enough force to create sand drifts in the homes on a daily basis.

We didn’t experience dust storms that were as severe, but the dust clouds from the southwest darkened the days and deposited a fair amount of topsoil in our area. My Dad commented that it takes 100 years to create an inch of topsoil through natural decomposition, but that the 1930’s made more than an inch in 10 years.

I only remember two times in my lifetime that I saw dust storms. One time was on a Wednesday afternoon in the middle 1950’s, when a scary black cloud covered the sky from the west. It was in the late winter and the next day the snow had a dirt covering on it. The other time was when we were traveling by car from Little Falls to St. Cloud on highway 10.

The wind was from the West and the dust

was so thick that speed was reduced to less than 20 miles per hour. That storm only lasted for a day.

Much effort was used to try to slow down the wind soil erosion. Today we see rows of trees planted in the fields south of Little Falls. The farmers have been encouraged to plant ground cover crops, which protect the soil from wind erosion.

Soil preparation today encourages leaving some of the crop residue from the previous years crop to protect the soil.

Hopefully we will not see dry years, as were experienced in the past, but we are told that weather cycles occur on a regular basis. Not something to anticipate with happiness.

You also might want to consider starting a side hustle like online tutoring, freelance writing and editing, or nannying (if health and safety allow) to get you through this time.

Keep making connections No matter where you work, you’ll meet all kinds of people. You never know who might be a valuable connection or job lead in the future. Always bring your A game to any job you have—whether it’s restocking shelves or delivering pizza.

Your boss could be the one to write you a reference or letter of recommendation later on down the road.

Don’t take on debt Don’t panic and sign up for a credit card! Loans will only cause you more stress in the long run. If you’re trying to pay off current debt and dealing with job uncertainty right now, I feel your pain.

Know that you might need to pause your debt snowball and just focus on generating

whatever income you can to cover your Four Walls—food, utilities, shelter and transportation—until you can get back on your feet. But after that, it’s game on!

Stay at home I know you never imagined living at home with your parents after college. But with these uncertain times, I’m all for it!

It saves you money and the stress of trying to pay rent while you’re unemployed. If moving home to live with mom and dad for a little while is an option, take it.

You guys, you’ve just graduate from college. You’ve worked hard for years, and I promise that hard work will pay off. Don’t forget to celebrate everything you’ve achieved (even if you’re celebrating at home), and keep it up. I’m proud of you!

Obituaries

Anthony W. “Tony” Kulzer

Anthony W. “Tony” Kulzer, age 87 of Greenwald, died peacefully on July 9, 2020, at his daughter’s cabin near Battle Lake, Minnesota, surrounded by family. He struggled with Parkinson’s Disease.

Known as “Andy” to his siblings and throughout his childhood, Tony was born on May 28, 1933, to Bernard and Catherine (Caspers) Kulzer. He was born, grew up and lived most of his life on the Kulzer family farm south of Greenwald. On May 24, 1966, he was united in marriage to Darlene Dingman. Together, they farmed and raised four children, eventually retiring in Greenwald in 1999. Although long since retired, he remained a farmer until his passing and never mentally left behind the land, his cows or the many chores of daily farm life. Tony was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and he also enjoyed spending time with his siblings, neighbors and friends. He was a sweet, gentle soul, who lived simply and was known for his kindness, compassion and generosity.

Tony is loved and will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years Darlene; children Mary Kay (Eric) Nepsund and Michelle (Krister) Johnson of St. Cloud and Greg (Angie) Kulzer, who took over the family farm; grandchildren Allison (Calvin) Herold and Alexandra Nepsund (fiancée Mitchell Bebus), Matty and Sylvia Johnson, and Isaac, Austin and Maverick Kulzer; and sisters Irma “Amy” Patras and Mary Ann “Mae” Samuelson of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark, in 1995; parents Bernard and Catherine (Caspers) Kulzer; and siblings Alois, LeRoy, Nick, Leona Zehrer, Renee Mergen and Monica Joaquim.

In an effort to best support current guidelines established during this global pandemic, the family has arranged for a private service to occur at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald, MN. We look forward to a future remembrance with all who knew and loved Tony, and we thank you for your understanding as we seek to do our part in protecting the vulnerable among us during these difficult times.

Cover Crop Cocktails

By Todd SWCD Cover crops, cover crops, cover crops. Seems like any farm magazine we pick up, a local field day that we may attend, or a website we may visit, mentions cover crops.

Well folks, there is a good reason for that. Up here in the North Country, our growing season is short. The time after corn and soybean harvest to establish a cover crop is either too short or nonexistent. There are some options for that but for now, we will discuss the opportunity to establish a cover crop after small grain harvest.

I already know what some of you are thinking: “I leave the volunteer grain grown in my field after harvest until a frost or until I till the soil to terminate it.”

If you are already doing that, great! That grain growth will help to soak up excess nutrients released by manure or soil organic matter. But if you want to take it to the next level, a cover crop mix is the answer. The reason behind a cover crop mix or a “cocktail” as some call it (bet I got your attention now), is multiple species of crops growing at once to provide food for above and below ground critters.

It’s a win-win deal.

Above ground you have the opportunity to graze your cover crop and extend your pasture season. You may choose to put a flowering species in your mix to feed the pollinators. Below ground, the different roots exude food for soil microbes and bacteria that are working to convert organic matter to available nutrients.

Think about this: one teaspoon of productive, healthy soil contains between 100 million to 1 billion bacteria. All those microbes and bacteria need to be fed. As you are prepping your combine for small grain harvest, take a second to think about cover crops. There is a reason behind all the attention they have been receiving lately.

Grey Eagle Township July 6, 2020 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe. Erv Herdering joined later.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 1, 2020 minutes to the board.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June. Claims list included claims 3457-3469-for a total of $29,724.58. This included the first half of the fire contract. Mike made the motion to approve the claims as listed. Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included a newsletter from U of M, emails about federal funding regarding Covid 19, Township health benefits, a question on a drainage easement and the State’s population report.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported on trees cut that had fallen on roadways. Ray also

did a road tour with spraying contractor and brought back a cost of $1,850.00. Mike made a motion to go ahead with the spraying, Ray made the second, motion carried. Shouldering on Arden Drive will need some work as there were several washouts. Ray suggested using clay or clay mixed with rock. Discussion on stumps along 130th and 337th- at least should spray, then decide. Ron had two phone calls one from a law student about Covid 19 and what steps the Township was taking. The other from L. Buccholz as he is ready to start mowing ditches.

Additional agenda item: Election update – need to approve election judges. Mike made a motion to approve those on the list upon completion of the training. Ray made a second, motion carried. Ron made a motion that the judges be paid $15.00 per hour and the head judge $20.00 per hour, with no mileage as trainings are being held on line. Mike made the second, motion carried.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Reporting fish die-offs helps the DNR and others respond when needed Anyone who finds several or more dead fish in a lake or stream can help by reporting these fish die-offs, which happen occasionally and usually result from natural causes.

“It can be unsettling and concerning to find a number of dead fish,” said Tom Burri, limnology consultant with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources who deals with water quality issues related to fisheries. “We hope people will help us out by reporting dead fish right away so we can determine if an investigation is needed.”

People should call the state duty officer at 651-649-5451 or 800-422-0798 to report fish die-offs. Doing so provides a single point of contact for the incident. The point of contact is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

An early report also allows timely water samples or other response actions to be taken if needed.

If there is an immediate threat to life or property, call 911 first. For general information requests, people can also contact area DNR fisheries offices, but this is not the best way to report fish kills.

Bacteria a common culprit One University of Minnesota study estimated that 500 fish die-offs happen each year in Minnesota.

In spring and summer, groupings of dead fish are usually the result of a comUpsala, MN

mon bacterial infection referred to as columnaris. Columnaris tends to affect fish as water temperatures warm and fish are stressed from the energy they spent on spawning. Columnaris infections can kill sunfish, crappies and bullheads, and occasionally, largemouth bass and northern pike.

Most fish diseases and infection issues found in nature tend to be concentrated in fish of a specific species and size range. In contrast, when an individual observes dead fish of vastly different sizes and from multiple species, human activity is a more likely a cause.

“People should try to describe the fish types and sizes they see when making a report. That kind of information helps immensely,” Burri said.

Human causes of fish kills can include water discharged at high temperatures, toxic chemicals discharged or spilled, pesticides and fertilizers, manure runoff, and low oxygen levels in a lake resulting from storm water that runs off urban or rural landscapes. Often, there are multiple causes contributing to fish deaths.

Explorer’s Program Informational Meeting The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office will be holding an informational meeting for youth ages 15-21 years old who are interested in a law enforcement career on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center (LEC).

The Explorer’s Program has been in existence since 1976. Accepted members learn response tactics for everyday law enforcement calls, report writing, defensive tactics, and arrest protocol.

These skills are put to the test at several competitions across the state of Minnesota against other agencies who participate in the Explorer’s Program.

Small pets and big hawks

There are many urban rumors about hawks carrying off small dogs and cats, but the reality is much different.

By Val Cunningham Q. A large hawk has been hanging around my neighborhood and this worries me. I have a small dog who likes to go out in the yard, but maybe I should put weights on her so a hawk can’t carry her off?

A. That’s a creative idea, but probably not necessary: Hawks appear large, but under all those feathers there’s a very lightweight bird with air-filled bones. The most likely backyard raptors are red-tailed hawks, weighing about 3 pounds and Cooper’s hawks, weighing up to 1 pound. If your dog weighs more than this, it won’t be carried off by a hawk, because these birds can’t carry more than their body weight. More usual prey for these birds are small animals like mice, voles, squirrels and, for Cooper’s hawks, small birds. One thing to keep in mind: If a raptor feels threatened, it could swoop down to slash a dog with its talons on your property, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your pet.

Owl ‘flock’ Q. This past summer I was sitting on my patio when a large owl flew nearby. Then I noticed more and more owls, with one eating something up in a tree, for a final count of six flying around. I found it odd to see so many owls.

A. That must have been an amazing sight, I’d have loved to see it. I checked with Karla Bloem, executive director of the International Owl Center (Houston, Minnesota) and she was intrigued, too.

She noted that if this occurred in the summer, the owls were likely a family, but in winter, long-eared owls could be around, since they gather in communal roosts. Because you indicated this was during warm weather, I’m guessing a barred owl family.

Albino birds?

Q. Are there albino birds? I was watching a group of sparrows and there was one that was solid white. I’m assuming it was a sparrow, too.

A. Yes, indeed, there are albinos in the bird world, and I think you’re right to suspect that the all-white bird spending time with sparrows was itself a sparrow. Readers have sent photos of all-white chickadees, goldfinches and robins, birds that we see with regularity and notice when there’s something odd.

But all other species have the potential to produce albinos, too. There’s another, more common, condition that produces light birds, called leucism, where feathers are missing pigment but these birds aren’t completely white and lacks the pink eyes of an albino.

Knockout junco Q. I was watching a flock of juncos under my feeders, and one stood out like a sore thumb. When I entered its colors in the Merlin Bird ID app on my phone it showed a dark-eyed junco and it said this was the Oregon subspecies. It was a beautiful bird and I wonder if it was a migrant that got off course?

A. Those Oregon dark-eyed juncos are beautiful birds and stand out in a crowd of their drabber cousins. They’re well-named, being a bird of the West, but field guides say that some over-winter in the Great Plains states each year.

Birders report a number of them in our area each winter and I’ve sometimes seen one mixed in with other juncos in my backyard. If you travel to cities like Portland or Seattle, this is the junco you’ll see everywhere.

Wary woodpecker Q. I’m wondering about the different behaviors I’ve observed between male and female downy woodpeckers at my feeder. The female lands on the feeder arm and slowly, hesitatingly, makes her way to the suet, while the male flies directly to the suet. Is this typical gender behavior or more likely individual traits?

-Lee Dear Lee, The debt snowball is Baby Step 2 of my plan for getting out of debt and gaining control of your finances. Specifically, it’s the part of the plan where you sit down with your budget, and look at all the money you owe. Then, list your debts from smallest to largest— except for your home—and pay them off in that order.

I know, there are all sorts of arguments about paying off the ones with the highest interest rates first. But this is psychology class, not math. Personal finance is 80% behavior, and 20% knowledge. Besides, if you were so great at math you wouldn’t have debt, would you? Pay off your debts from smallest to largest, unless there’s a huge emergency, such as you’re facing foreclosure, or the IRS is banging on your door.

The reason we pay off debts from smallest to largest is to build confidence and enthusiasm by notching quick wins. If you go on a diet and lose weight in the first week, you’ll probably stay on that diet. If you go on a diet and gain weight, or go weeks with no visible progress, chances are you’ll quit.

Every dollar you can squeeze out of your budget goes toward the smallest debt until it is paid. Once the smallest one is paid, the payment from that debt—plus any extra “found” money—is added to the next smallest debt. Then, when debt number two is paid off, you take the money that you used to pay on number one and number two, and you pay it on number three. When three is paid, you attack number four and so on. A lot of folks get to the bottom of the list, and find they can pay well over $1,000 a month on a student loan or a car. At that point, it won’t take long to bust out and be debt-free except for your home.

The main elements that make the debt snowball so powerful are budgeting, getting current before you start the debt snowball, the smallest-to-largest pay-off, sacrifice, discipline, and focused intensity. If you think the debt snowball is just another trick, or something you might kind of try, it won’t work. You’ve got to go all-in to win!

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2019 Buick Enclave that has been parked for over four months without being started. Due to circumstances I stopped driving the car for a while and it may sit for another few months. I am concerned about the vehicle’s health. Do I have to worry about anything specific? The battery is dead and nothing inside will light up at all. I have been told I will need to have it towed to the dealership and they will have to change the gas because it’s old and that I will need a new battery and possibly some of the fluids changed. I listen to your radio show and trust your advice.

If this car were going to sit for more than a year it could have some bigger issues but sitting six months or so is not going to make much an impact on the car. To avoid a dead battery, we would suggest that next time and even now as you wait to drive again that you install a battery maintainer on the car and leave it connected when not in use.

Gasoline should not go bad that fast and the other fluids other than an oil change should not be needed either.

If you have used 88 for some time, then you know how it performs in your vehicle with a slightly higher-octane rating than some of the fuel labeled 10 percent ethanol. Almost every gallon of fuel in the U.S. has ethanol in it. E15 is approved for use in motor vehicles 2001 model year and newer and is sold under the 88 label and other pumps labeled E15. You must decide for yourself but in our own shop of over 30 years we have never seen any damage caused by it when used properly. Any fuel can be an issue if misused such as putting diesel in a gas car. Ask your friends for details about why they do not like it.

A Fireworks Funny

One year, Little Johnny’s family was having the “extended family” 4th of July cookout at their home. One of the special treats that year was the lighting of the fireworks (Roman candles, bottle rockets, missile batteries, etc.) they had bought out of state (they’re illegal in their state, of course!)

Just before they were to arrive, a cousin calls, saying their neighbor’s plans had just fallen through, and could they bring them along to the picnic they even had extra food to bring “Sure, the more the merrier!”

Upon arrival and meeting of their cousin’s neighbor, it is discovered that he’s a police officer. The father turns as innocently as he can to Johnny and whispers to him to grab the paper bag of fireworks sitting in the kitchen and hide them somewhere quickly.

Johnny disappears, and the father

changes the topic to food for the day.

This family had brought some chicken to grill, so the father tells them the gas grill is all set to use out back - just turn on the gas and push the ignition button with the lid still closed.

They head out to the back as Johnny comes back in through the front door. The father hurries to him and says “Whew, that was close! That man’s a police officer, and he almost saw the fireworks. Did you hide them real well?”

“Oh, yeah, nobody will ever think to look in the grill!”
