Good leaders ask great questions -By Harvey Mackay Two leaders whom I respect a great deal and whose work I have studied both stress the importance of asking questions to find answers that will unlock your success.

Dale Carnegie wrote about the ten ways to be a leader.

Number four is to ask questions.

John Maxwell in April of this year was named the #1 leadership guru in the United States by the American Management Association (AMA). John hosts leadership conferences, and late last year I was invited to speak at one in the Atlanta area. He talked about the power of asking questions. In fact, the title of his new book is “Good Leaders Ask Great Questions.”

According to John, you are perhaps only one question away from an answer that will dramatically change your life.

leadership, you think of direction. You think of vision. You think of somebody pointing the way and saying, ‘this is the way to go.’ But what I want you to understand today is that the impetus of leadership is asking good questions. … ask the right questions because it’s the key to success.”

John listed nine values of asking questions.

You only get answers to questions you ask. If you don’t ask the questions, you don’t get the answers. Don’t cheat yourself. I’ve always said the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask. The person who asks may feel like a fool for five minutes, but the person who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Questions are the most effective way to connect with people. One of the points that I stress with my Mackay 66 Customer Profile is to find common ground, and one of the best ways to do this is by asking questions.

“People connect when they understand, but they commit when they feel understood,” John said. He added that when you ask good questions and listen and learn, you become a better leader.

Questions unlock doors that otherwise would remain closed. John says most of the doors to opportunity and success are locked. But asking the right questions is like having a key to open them.

Questions cultivate humility. When you ask questions of someone, you are telling them that they know something you don’t. You value their opinion as a teacher.

Questions allow us to direct the

conversation. If you like to control your conversations, there is no better way than asking questions. John is a big believer in scheduling learning lunches with smart people where he likes to pick their brains.

He has a list of seven questions he always asks: • What is the greatest lesson you’ve ever learned?

• What are you learning now?

• How has failure shaped your life?

• Who do you know that I should know? And will you help me meet them?

• What have you read that I should read?

• What have you done that I should do?

• How can I add value to you?

Questions allow us to build better ideas. John is a big believer in sharing his ideas with others. That way ideas can be expanded upon and become great ideas.

Questions give us a different perspective. John says: “Before you attempt to set things right, you’ve got to make sure you see things right. And the only way that you can see things right is by asking questions.”

Questions challenge mindsets. “In other words, questions get us out of ruts,” according to John. “Questions precede discovery, and discovery precedes change.”

Questions set us apart from other people. Questions are a great differentiator, especially if you ask better questions than the other person.

John told us his story of when he was 23 years old and just out of college. He was a pastor at a little country church and a parishioner gave him a list of the 10 largest churches in America. John wrote the pastors of all 10 to see if they would meet with him for 30 minutes. Two agreed. By the time he was age 29, John had the tenth largest church in America.

Obituaries LeRoy A. “Roy” Vos

LeRoy A. “Roy” Vos, age 83 of Albany, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the VA Hospice Unit in St. Cloud, Minnesota where he received exceptional care while battling cancer for a very short time.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 18 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Bradley Jenniges, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. and Rev. Virgil Petermeier, osc. concelebrating. Entombment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Albany American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. followed by the Albany American Legion Post 482 at 6 p.m. Friday evening.

LeRoy A. “Roy” Vos was born November 3, 1931 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Hilda (Ricker) Vos. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a tank gunner with the 3rd armored division. He was stationed in Germany from 1954 through 1956. LeRoy was united in marriage to MaryAnn Goebel on September 15, 1962 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. He worked at Dairy Craft Inc. as a welder from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, he

Delores F. Rieger (Berke) drove bus for the Albany School District for 14 years. Roy was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and the American Legion Post 482.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and attending the grandkid’s sporting events. He also enjoyed helping MaryAnn with cutting quilting material and playing with his dog Bella who was a special companion. LeRoy loved being active; but above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, children, and grandchildren whom he loved very much.

LeRoy is survived by and will be deeply missed by his wife of 53 years, MaryAnn Vos of Albany; children, Sharon (Curt) Fischer of Cold Spring and David Vos of Cold Spring; five grandchildren, Scott Fischer of Waite Park, Brianna Vos of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jenna (Denver) Rogalla of Lewisburg, West Virginia, Kelsi Vos of Nashville, Tennessee, and Macin Vos of Cold Spring; brothers and sisters, Marcella Vos of Waite Park, Valeria Lehner of Albany, Linus (Doris) Vos of Albany, and Wilfred Vos of Upsala; and his dog, Bella.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Melvin Vos, Othmar Vos, Marion Vos, and Betty Olson; and infant sister, Lucille Vos. Serving as urn bearer will be Macin Vos. Cross bearer will be Scott Fischer and scripture bearer will be Brianna Vos. Mass servers will be Keith and Adam Goebel.

Gift bearers will be Delores Vos and Susan Vos. Honorary bearers will be Ronald Goebel, Tony Vetter, Brenda Ritter, Clarence Enneking, Howard Koglin, Joel Vos, and the Anniversary Group.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Delores F. Rieger, age 95, formerly of Big Birch Lake, Grey Eagle and St. Paul, MN passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Pine Villa Nursing Home, Melrose, MN. A private service will be held at a later date.

Delores F. Berke was born to Sarah and

Frank Berke Nov. or Dec. 1919 in St. Paul.

She married Christopher E. Rieger on May 8, 1940 in St. Paul, MN. Delores worked at many different occupations in her lifetime.

She loved playing cards, bingo and doing her crafts.

Delores is survived by her daughter Patricia Berscheid, daughter-in-law Linda (Paul) Vomhof, 7 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and sister Louanne Zschokkee, and many nieces and nephews.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chris in 1999, son Chris Jr., 1 great-grandchild and 5 brothers.

Pauline E. “Grandma P.” Imdieke

Pauline E. “Grandma P.” Imdieke, age 99 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, July 10, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Pauline Elizabeth Meyer was born February 6, 1916 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to Joseph and Elizabeth (Deters) Meyer. On May 25, 1937 she married Edward Imdieke at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. The couple farmed east of Meire Grove until 1973. They retired and moved to town. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, baking bread, and was a good cook.

Pauline was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, St. Open at 2 pm Mon-Fri; Noon on Sat.

Monica B. Frieler

Monica B. Frieler, age 101 of Greenwald, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 11 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Monica Bernadine Wensman was born June 29, 1914 in Melrose, Minnesota to Casper and Anna (Enneking) Wensman. On May 4, 1937 she married Edwin Frieler at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

The couple farmed near New Munich for 30 years. After retiring from farming, Monica worked at Stearns Manufacturing from 1966 through 1980, and then did custodial work for St. Andrew’s School for 13 years. Monica enjoyed quilting, embroidering, visiting and spending time with family.

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald, Christian Women, and St. Andrew’s Catholic United Financial.

A l i c e Rothstein, age 90, died in her home on Thursday, July 9, 2015.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at the St. Martin Catholic Church, St. Martin, MN. Alice was born in St. Martin Township on July 10, 1924 to Mary (Doll) and Joseph Olmschenk. She married Mark Rothstein on August 26th, 1946. Alice enjoyed her time with family, relishing her role as a mom, a grandma and a great grandma. She was an active member of AA for 40 years, an enthusiastic card player, and maintained a loving home - welcoming all visitors. She was an avid quilter, sewer, crafter, gardener,

Calvin E. Hedin, 54 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Thursday, July 9, 2015 at his home in Swanville. Funeral service was held Monday, July 13, 2015 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial took place in the Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. Calvin Eugene Hedin was born on March 12, 1961 in Little Falls, MN to Eugene and Wilma (Hartwig) Hedin. He grew up in Swanville, MN and graduated from Swanville High School in 1979. Calvin spent most of his life as a truck driver, spending the last 7 years with Knife River.

He enjoyed hunting up north with his family and the occasional fishing trip. Calvin was a master wood splitter, always keeping his mom’s basement full. He loved watching the Young & The Restless and classic westerns on TV. He also enjoyed driving tractors and

Agriculture education was one of the areas in the new ag budget that was given a healthy increase.

There is a need for more educators in the field, especially at the high school level, in addition to a funding shortfall in the area of adult Farm Business Management (FBM). That program, the off-shoot of the former “vets’ ag program,” was given an additional $2 million per year for the next two years in an effort to maintain the program and even to expand it modestly.

The FBM program has seen its number of instructors decline in recent years and, as a result, the number of students per instructor has increased. And since the program involves farm visits and is very “hands-on”, the workload for the remaining instructors also increased greatly. To further compound the problem, some retiring instructors in re-

cent years had not been replaced because of financial reasons. The FBM program is run as part of the MnSCU system, and because of its unique one-on-one teaching style, the program is relatively expensive. Those farmers taking part pay college tuition rates but that doesn’t fully cover the cost of the program.

The additional funding in this year’s ag budget will go to an organization known as MAELC, or the Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council. They will award the money in the form of competitive grants to any of the seven FBM programs in the state. Those receiving the additional funding must meet certain criteria, including a modest two percent growth factor in the number of students enrolled.

I am a member of the MAELC board and chaired its recent meeting on the campus of Southwest State University in Marshall where the grant program was approved.

At the same meeting, we also heard reports of new ag education programs getting off the ground at the college in Marshall and at the University of Minnesota school in Crookston. Both locations have been working on putting their new curriculums together and hope to get official state approval soon.

er. We took part in the parade at Brooten that afternoon, and conditions were certainly summer-like. A nice breeze helped to offset the heat, and officials hoped any storms would hold off until the day’s festivities were over. Sure enough, storm clouds to the north and west built late in the afternoon and finally rumbled across the state that evening.

We happened to be in Glenwood when the storm hit that area. Heavy rain came down, and wind gusts actually shook our car. We headed for home some ten miles to the south and west, and when we drove in our driveway, the dust kicked up behind us.

We had completely missed it, and as a farmer, it gives one mixed emotions. We certainly needed the moisture, as we had also missed out on the rain the previous week.

Our crops were beginning to show signs of moisture stress as they head into the important pollination growth stage. One doesn’t like to see storm damage either, but it seems at this time of year in order to get muchneeded rain, a storm of some magnitude usually accompanies it.

Parades this weekend in Sauk Centre Saturday evening and in Freeport Sunday morning. See you there!

All of us are confronted by the passing of time - not only the elderly. It is an issue that all of us face whether we like it or not.

Yet, our culture is in massive denial that everyone ages and every life will end.

Our elderly now live in “retirement villages.” More cosmetics than ever are sold to “erase” the lines of aging. There are more products now available to “cover” gray hair that once stood for wisdom. We have surgery to remove the signs of aging that are becoming less expensive and more available. But it is all in vain. Time is the enemy of everyone and judgment awaits us all.

David was aware of the fact his life was passing away. Overwhelmed by its shortness he cried out, “Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.” He had questions and wanted God’s answers. His sickness was a result of his sin and knowing that God was displeased with him caused him to be alarmed.

So, he wanted a “date” and the “number” of days he had left to live. He was asking God to give him some assurance of the time he had been allotted. Having that information would enable him to “figure” out what to do “next.” But he didn’t get it.

In this simple verse he admitted that he was frail, that his “days” were numbered and his “life” short. He knew that one day he would certainly face God! Armand Nicholi said, “Only when we are ready to die can we truly live a fulfilling and satisfying life.”

He’s fine now, but we still have about $20,000 in medical bills because we were both between jobs and didn’t have medical coverage when the accident occurred. We also have two credit cards, one with a $1,000 balance and the other a $7,000 balance. We only have $200 a month we can put toward debt, so where should we start?

-Sandy Dear Sandy, Not having health insurance at any time of your life is not smart, regardless of being between jobs or not. Ouch, what a mess!

You didn’t tell me what you guys make, but I can tell you a few things.

Number one, you’re probably going to have to get your income up. You may have to take on a couple of part-time jobs or work some overtime. My grandmother used to say, “There’s a great place to go when you’re broke — to work!” If you only have $200 a month to put toward your debt, you’ve got to create some margin, and that may be on the income side of things.

The other thing I’ve found is this: Most people seem to be able to magically find money when they feel it’s a life or death situation. “Magically” means that you do a budget. You make a written game plan where every dollar has a name before the month begins. When you write down every dollar, and you and your husband sit down and agree on where every dollar is going to go, you’re going to have an ah-ha moment that feels like you got a raise. If you’re normal, you waste a bunch of money because you don’t budget and have a written plan. And normal pretty much sucks!

So, here’s the drill. Start living on a written budget, extra work, start working the debt snowball and pay off those debts from smallest to largest and don’t even think about a vacation or anything else that’s not necessity based until you clean up this mess.

When you start living with a scorched earth idea — beans and rice, rice and beans — I’ll bet you’re going to find a lot more than $200 in your budget to put toward killing off this debt!

If you’re thinking about actually taking him in under your roof, you need to remember that your first responsibility is to your family. You have to make sure they’re safe, and that would include finding out everything there is to know about this guy.

Talk to his past teachers, coaches or even family members if you can find them. Spend some time just talking to him, too, and find out more about his background, attitude, habits and goals. Then, if you still feel led to open your home to him, make sure everyone involved signs an agreement with really clear rules and guidelines about what is expected, what will not be tolerated and the rewards and consequences of each.

Helping him with food and clothing alone would be a generous act, but what you’re considering is absolutely amazing.

Just make sure, if you go this route, to do it not just with love, but with lots of forethought and wisdom.

Grey Eagle Township July 6, 2015 These are unapproved minutes.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mike Rohe & Mary Ann Primus.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were any additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 1, 2015 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to approve the minutes as written. Ray made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Rodney & Marilyn Lanners were present to request the Township’s approval to apply for a liquor license for Eagle Mountain. Ray made the motion to grant approval.

Mike made the second. All in favor.

Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June.

Claims list included 13 claims for a total of $19,518.83. These claims included the spraying cost, IRS, and PERA and Herdering Inc. for blading, gravel and road repairs.

Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Letter received from the State Demographic Center listed the Township’s population at 613 and Households at 273 for 2014.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of June 1, 2015: $133,680.22;

Checks cleared: 14, $12,537.33; Deposits including interest & tax settlement: $123,073.91l; Balance as of June 30, 2015: $244,216.80; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $244,216.80; CD Balance: $123,141.80 Ray made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that Chickadee Drive has been repaired. Ray reported the culvert on130 E was removed and the one on 130th W was replaced with a new culvert. Spraying has been completed, some discussion about whether the job was done as requested. Ron had a call as to why permission was given to dig tile thru the Township road and where the water will end up. Ron will check on progress of the tiling job. The Board members reviewed a Township map with Lee Buchholz as to which roads should or should not be mowed. Ray was asked if he had more information on the closing of 343rd- minimum maintenance road. He stated the gate was up and there is plenty of, parking along 341st. Board members felt there should be something in writing as to the abandonment of the road and the reason. More discussion at next month’s meeting.

Additional agenda items: Upsala Telephone sent a proposal for updating their fiber optic communication cable and equipment for the Township’s review. After some discussion it was decided to call them with a question as to where their start point would be and when.

CARETAKER POSITION OPEN

The Grey Eagle Housing Association is seeking someone to fill a part-time position as caretaker at Village View Apartments in Grey Eagle. Village View is a 24 unit housing project for the elderly and disabled.

The responsibilities include assisting tenants with some tasks and keeping the buildings and grounds in top condition. Contractors do major repairs.

The caretaker will need to be courteous at all times to residents and their guests, will consult with the manager on any concerns or problems and will work with the Grey Eagle Housing Board of Directors to maintain an efficient and safe project. Compensation for this position will depend on experience and qualifications.

Flexibility in work hours is needed.
