Warren Buffett’s 4 rules for success -By Harvey Mackay I love to study creative and successful people. And who better than Warren Buffet, the Omaha multi-billionaire and chairman of Berkshire, Hathaway, Inc. He recently listed the four common-sense principles that contributed to his mega success, and here’s my take on his formula for prosperity.

Unfortunately, they are not commonly practiced.

Number one is to choose your friends wisely. I have friends whom I’ve known since I was a little boy, friends from college, friends who started out as business contacts, golfing friends, friends who share my passion for community service, and friends I met last week.

And they all have one thing in common: We like each other for what we are, not what we want each other to be.

Greek philosopher Socrates was asked, “What is the most beneficial thing a person can acquire?” He answered, “A friend who gives sincere advice.”

I am fortunate to have friends who aren’t afraid to ruffle my feathers when it comes to advice. If I need to adjust my attitude, alter my course, back off or move forward, I have friends who will tell me. And because I value their friendship, I listen. And I will return the favor, if necessary. And we will remain friends because friendship is like a bank account: You cannot continue to draw on it without making deposits.

Buffett’s second point is continuous learning. I’m a big believer in lifelong learning.

You don’t go to school once for a lifetime; you are in school all your life.

We can’t put enough of a premium on the importance of education. Education can help avoid the high price we pay for experience – the great teacher that helps us gain knowledge and

avoid making the same mistake twice or three times.

Education is an investment and never an expense. Consider education a capital improvement. Don’t be ashamed to borrow, particularly to replenish your professional inventory. In fact, self-improvement is the one area in which you should really increase your spending, not decrease it.

I like to say, if you think education is expensive, try ignorance. So why not make continuous education a new priority? Learning is like riding a bicycle. You don’t fall off unless you stop pedaling.

Point number three is to improve your communication skills. Buffett said: “If you improve your communication skills, I will guarantee you that you’ll earn 10% to 50% more money over your lifetime.”

It’s been said that a message sent is only as good as the receiver’s perception of it.

Verbal communications tend to create confusion and misunderstanding for a remarkably simple reason: the 500 most commonly used words in the English language have more than 14,000 definitions.

To make communication really work, we need to make sure the people we’re communicating with understand what we are saying as well as we do. Communication requires both effective sending and receiving.

To avoid a breakdown in communications, break down your message so that everyone can understand it.

Buffett’s fourth point is the ability to say no. Why is it so hard to say no? It’s just a tiny two-letter word, but it is tremendously liberating. So why do we feel so guilty saying no?

Some people have a great sense of duty and obligation. They feel like they have to say yes to almost anything they are asked to do – and end up feeling resentful and burned out. Remember, taking care of yourself is important, too.

Let me just add, from a management perspective, I love when people are willing to take on extra tasks when necessary. I do not love when their work is substandard or their usual responsibilities suffer just so they can prove how many balls they can juggle at one time. That tells me that they are weak on time management.

Saying no is not the same as saying never.

It’s an acknowledgment that you respect yourself as well as the person doing the asking.

Believe me, it won’t stop them from asking again!

One of my favorite quotes from the Oracle of Omaha represents what I believe to be an intelligent approach to both business and investing: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”

As Warren Buffett knows, the real opportunity for success lies within the person and not in the job.

Mackay’s Moral: One more Buffett gem: “You only have to do a few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong.”

of us carry a cell phone which allows us to be continually in touch with the world. If anything happens, there are a variety of reports on face-book. Other information is readily available from texts. We can access news 24 hours per day on a variety of news channels.

The problem with these news outlets is that virtually every news source reports stories that are supportive of the station’s political leanings. The stories are many times nothing other than the reporters personal opinions. We have a choice of actually looking at the facts regarding the story or just believing the story as truth.

Is our life better today than it was years ago? Yes, we are better informed, but does the additional information make us more comfortable in our life? Being able to expose our minds with all of this information and interruption actually doesn’t make our life more enjoyable. Are you actually more comfortable being concerned with a vice president not actually visiting the border or an ex-president being accused of not paying enough taxes. Can you stop global warming?

Do you really know how to avoid Covid-19?

These are the big news items of today. Is your personal worry about these items actually making your life easier? I really think that our life in a simpler time was preferable. What do you think?

When I was a kid, I lived in a world that involved the farm and in a few cases included the local community.

We needed to know if one of the cows was limping and what caused it. If a fence needed to be fixed. If there was a trail through the snow so the milkman could pick up the milk. Whether the corn was able to make knee-high by the 4th of July. If it was going to rain on the fresh cut hay and if the chickens and pigs had enough drinking water.

These were the important worries at that time.

They, by today’s standards, were very simple.

We were concerned with things that actually involved us personally. What was happening in St. Paul or Washington seemed too far away to affect our lives anyway, so we didn’t worry about them. We were more concerned with an uncle’s birthday gathering, because at that time it was the accepted procedure to go to his house on that day along with the rest of the close relatives and some of his neighbors. These gatherings created enough local gossip to keep you informed about everyone that wasn’t at the party. Plus there were many choices at the pot-luck table to give a chance to eat foods from other ladies kitchens, therefore avoiding the need to go to a restaurant for a change of food flavors. These gatherings were not only a night out, but also a way to save money. A good deal!

We did turn the radio on to catch the morning, noon and evening news. We wanted to find out who died, had a baby, or was injured in an accident. We did pay special attention to how the War was progressing. These were some facts needed to carry on an intelligent conversation if needed.

If we needed to make a telephone call, we would go to someone’s home that had a brown wooden box on the wall. The calls were usually to contact the vet for a sick cow or to order gasoline for the tank. Other needed contact could be done with a letter or postcard.

After all, the mail service would get a letter to someone in less than a week.

By the time this article goes to print, I will be in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, putting in a new bathroom for my daughter and her husband. My wife, Lori, and I have made 2 trips over the last 6 weeks to start the gutting project, and now we get to put it back together again. My daughter and her husband, like most people, do not understand the remodeling process. When I was a contractor, I told my customers that it will get worse before it gets better.

So, the Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else. And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?” The bathroom that I will be putting back together again is one of the worst I have seen. I suppose a person could say that it is “desperately sick.”

In fact, over the last 6 weeks, it definitely has gotten worse, not better. Our lives are like that too.

Alvina E. Dierkhising

Alvina E. Dierkhising, age 104 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at CentraCare – Sauk Centre Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, July 12 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rick Aubol officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Alvina Elizabeth Primus was born January 26, 1917 in Lastrup, Minnesota to Henry and Mary (Athmann) Primus. She went to school through the sixth grade. On June 23, 1941, she married Anthony “Tony” Dierkhising at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. The couple lived in various places including Meire Grove, Clearwater, Sauk

Margaret L. Krupa

Margaret L. Krupa, age 75 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Margaret Louise Johnson was born March 11, 1946 in Slayton, Minnesota to Simon and Sophie (Huge) Johnson. She was united in marriage to Ronald Krupa on January 20, 1968 in St. Francis. She worked at St. Michael’s Nursing Home in Sauk Centre for many years and then at the Sauk Centre High School from 1979 to 2003. She started out as a custodian and later as a paraprofessional.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre and the Paul F. Donart V.F.W Post 2853 Auxiliary. Margaret enjoyed cake decorating, baking, cooking, embroidering, sewing, painting and varnishing, but most of all, taking care of her grandchildren and husband.

Lawrence Ambrose Gaebel was born February 18, 1960 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Ambrose and Marie (Marthaler) Gaebel.

He graduated from Melrose High School and began working in construction. Larry owned and operated G & C Log Homes. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting, especially deer hunting. Larry loved being a grandfather and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Maria (Travis) Skoog of St. Paul, Ben Gaebel of Upsala, Megan (Nick) Klinkner of Freeport, and Jacob (Carlee) Gaebel of Melrose; five grandchildren, Kinsley, Apollonia, Rosalie, Bea, and Olly; sister, Georgine (William) Nathe of Freeport; and many loving relatives and friends.

Richard J. “Rick” Rieland

Church in Melrose. Rick worked at Carstens Industries for over 40 years. He enjoyed being outdoors and spent countless hours hunting and fishing. More recently, one of his favorite things was driving around the countryside with Amy so she could take photos. Rick loved making special memories and spending time with his friends and family - especially his four granddaughters.

Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Amy (Maus) Rieland of Little Birch Lake; daughters, Nikki (Trey) Swanson and their children, Finley and Harlow of Becker, and Hanna (Chris) Lundeen and their children, Gracelyn and Lakelyn of Little Birch Lake; and brothers, Dan Rieland of Melrose, Randy (Nadine) Rieland of Albany, Paul “Gurney” (Lisa) Rieland of Melrose, and Tom “Zippy” Rieland of St. Cloud.

Lila C. Gomer

June of 1961 and then moved to the Grey Eagle/Burturm area where they resided for the past 50 years. Robert passed away in 2011 and Lila continued to live on their farm until 2019 when she moved to Galeon Care Center.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church in Grey Eagle and enjoyed gardening, canning foods, raising chickens, sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

Survivors include her children, David Gomer, Dale (Julie) Gomer, and Darla Roering all of Burtrum. 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mary Gomer.

Marilyn S. Uphus

Marilyn S. Uphus, age 88 of Melrose, passed away peacefully Friday, July 9, 2021, surrounded by her family at her son and daughter-in-law’s home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, July 14 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating and Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg assisting. Interment was at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Greenwald.

Marilyn Sylvia Goerdt was born December 14, 1932 in Sedan, Minnesota to Anthony and Loretta (Weimerskirck) Goerdt.

The family moved to rural Sauk Centre where she was one of her dad’s outside helper’s. She went to country school until the eighth grade and graduated from Sauk Centre High School.

Marilyn met her loving husband, Francis Uphus through his cousin, Sylvester Uphus on the farm. The couple got married on June 17, 1950 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

After their marriage, they moved to South St. Paul and later moved to Melrose in 1958. From there they moved to Greenwald where they raised their family. She currently lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Rhonda who were her caregivers for the past four years.

She will be greatly missed by all!

Marilyn was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald where she sang in the choir and St. Ann’s Christian Women.

Her hobbies were reading, sewing, crocheting, flower gardening, bowling, ceramic shop/ teaching classes, and her fall ceramic sale. She also enjoyed digging for crystals in Montana and the last few years her bible study group.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chris, Jenna, Alex, Paige, Nolan and Brady and 4 great-grandchildren, Annie, Archie, Evvie and Eddie; and four living siblings, Frank, Pete, Al and Bob. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Raymond on September 4, 2004, an infant daughter, Lori and brothers and sisters, Joseph Lehner, Jr. and Raymond Lehner, Kathryn Buermann, Eileen Kirchner, and sons-in-law, John Styler on October 27, 2015 and Todd Burns on April 10, 2021. other brothers and sisters. Kathleen married Richard Angus of Garfield, MN, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre in 1963.

While working and raising a family, Richard and Kathleen lived in several Midwest towns including Rochester, MN, Peoria, IL, Waverly, IA, Jacksonville, IL, and Oconomowoc, WI. During the entire time, Kathleen loved being active at her Catholic church and entertaining her children and their friends.

In 1981, Richard, Kathleen, and the children moved to Wadena, MN. Kathleen worked as a Newspaper Distribution Manager for several years with the Star Tribune. Upon retirement, she spent time volunteering for the church and baking goodies for all. She had a very deep faith and commitment to God.

Dear Neighbors, Our Senator Paul Gazelka contracted Covid-19, then held a large in-person post-election party in November which sadly resulted in the Covid-related death of Republican Senator Jerry Relph. Senator Gazelka then insisted on being one of the first in Minnesota to get a Covid-19 vaccination but he still refuses to encourage us to get it. It looks like he doesn’t care if we get sick and die from Covid.

It looks like he just wants us to remain confused and skeptical about the safety of the vaccine because in order to stay in power he needs to keep the confusion front and center.

Our family got our vaccinations in February and April with no side effects or problems. We don’t know anyone who had bad side effects from the vaccine but we know several who have died and several more who continue to have very difficult Covid related health problems.

Let’s not be tricked. For the sake of our health and that of our family and communities let’s get our vaccines. Like the measles vaccine, the Covid vaccine is safe. Misinformation, Covid-19 and the new variants are deadly.

Dear Kunal, Actually, it’s a whole life policy, not a term policy. And it’s an absolute scam.

Basically, with whole life you pay about 20 times more for the same amount of insurance that you would with a term policy.

The extra money goes into a savings account, and you earn next to nothing on it, even after you finally start to build it up. One of the ways they’re pitching it now is the self-banking concept, where you can use your own money.

It’s nothing magical or anything, because with a regular checking account you use your own money.

My advice is to stay away from the company that’s offering it and anything else they have. It’s a really bad product, and it’s a scummy way to sell whole life insurance— which is an awful product to begin with. No

-Barker Dear Barker, This is a good question. Giving is never a bad idea unless you do it irresponsibly and to the point of putting your family in financial danger. To the best of my knowledge, the Bible only addresses the topic of tithing by individuals—not businesses.

Personally, I don’t give a tenth of my business gross or net until I receive my paycheck. When that happens—meaning it’s profit that I’m going to pay taxes on, or it’s salaried income out of my business—I tithe on the profits.

So, I can’t really tell you I’ve found Biblical instruction to give a tenth of your business. Hope this helps!

I’m purchasing a new car with it and it has me concerned and wanting to know more before I buy as I don’t know how it works or if it’s safe. Does it really have no connection between the steering wheel and wheels? What if it quits working?

-Bryan in Vandalia, Missouri Dear Bryan, Drive-By-Wire has been around for more than a decade in many vehicles and is also used in aircraft. You could almost compare it to remote control where you command the action of a device remotely without actually being in physical connection to it. Electric Throttle Control is the most common and is used in most all cars and trucks on the road today but we are now seeing steering go this way due to autonomous cars and self-parking modes that are coming into the market. Throttles have at least two sensors for redundancy and if it fails, well, you just don’t accelerate; if steering fails, not so good... Engineers have taken our safety into account and have designed the system so that there is a physical connection that is made whenever the electronics are not powered just in case there is a failure. This safety system was designed to prevent safety issues in the event of a failure. We suggest you get online and investigate further for your own piece of mind before you choose to purchase one.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Tom Nelson requested to detach the Giordano Family Trust Property known as 614 Hwy 238 from the city’s limits. The Council directed Nelson to approach the Planning & Zoning Commissioners as a first step. One of his issues was receiving no natural gas. Johnson stated he would look into trying to get Greater Minnesota Gas to extend their line at least down to that property.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Brian Lange informed the Council the fire at the Borgstrom House last night was a four-hour fight. They did save around 80% of the antiques from the museum.

Unfinished Business: Heritage Days Meeting: Benson reviewed the Heritage Days meeting that was held June 15 and reminded everyone of the meeting set for July 20.

R u d o l p h “Rudy” John, age 85, passed away peacefully at his farm on July 8, 2021, in Long Prairie, MN. Rudy was born on February 25, 1936 in Little Elk Township, Todd County, and was the second youngest of nine children to Stanley John and Anna (Motzko). He graduated from Browerville High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 thru 1958 and was honorably discharged.

Rudy married Marlene Lisson on October 27, 1958 and they made their first home on a farm six miles SW of Staples until 1962, when they moved to a farm in Browerville, going into a partnership with Rudy’s brother Roman.

In 1969 they purchased a nine-acre hobby farm on the outskirts of Long Prairie where they raised their family and proudly created a forever home, residing the rest of their lives with Marlene passing away on March 5, 2006.

Rudy was a skilled livestock jockey, who could judge the health and weight of all forms of livestock with amazing accuracy. Livestock was sold in sales barns across Minnesota, North and South Dakota. It was a big deal for his children, and later his grandchildren, to accompany Rudy on a livestock run which always involved eating at Dad’s favorite cafes and food stands at the sales barns. Rudy was very proud to be a part of the livestock industry, working hand in hand with farmers, livestock dealers, auctioneers, and processors, providing farm to table food for our communities.

Rudy was the original “MacGyver”, capable of building, welding, wrenching, assembling all forms of trailers, trucks, campers, boats, lawnmowers, conversion buses of the building.

New City Hall Location: The Council reviewed the proposals submitted to remodel the new proposed city hall location at the Rec Building.

Planning Meeting Update: Johnson reviewed the information received on the agenda items from the planning meeting held June 23.

New Business: Water Shut-offs: Mitch Lange moved to allow staff to shut water once again off due to lack of payments, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Raffle Permit: Benson moved to approve the Raffle Permit requested by the Upsala Firemen’s Relief Association to be held on September 11, 2021, at Bullfrogs in Upsala with no waiting period, 2nd by Mitch Lange.

Motion carried with Brian Lange abstaining.

Special Meeting for Abatement of Property: Mitch Lange moved to have a Special Council Meeting at 6:30 on July 15 to hold a hearing on the abatement issues with the properties of 307 West Street and 311 West Street, by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Rudy was an avid fan of heavy-duty Ford trucks, always running big motors, dual tires, and maximum trailer towing equipment. This fandom was passed along to his son David who has kept the Ford heavy duty legacy going strong.

Rudy loved his wife, who loved to fish, which led them on many, many road trips to Northern Canada in pursuit of large pike and walleye. These were more than just fishing trips, they were fun filled adventures with brothers, children, grandchildren, nephews, neighbors, and friends including a special trip escorting newlyweds Duane and Tracey on their honeymoon.

Rudy was blessed with emotional intelligence and authenticity which drew him to people, and people to him. He had many wonderful relationships with nephews and nieces that he treasured deeply. He was a fabulous storyteller with astonishing memory, and to hear him tell a deer hunting story verbatim over the course of decades was a true blessing.

In Rudy’s final chapter he treasured his soulful, wisdom sharing conversations with Deanna, and a great appreciation for the daily care and love provided by Darla and Amelia.

Rudy is survived by his children Don (Linda) John, Deanna John, Duane (Tracey) John, David (Darla) John and Darla John; his grandchildren Michael, Danielle, Spencer, Sasha, Sarah, Jami, Jacob, Zachary, Fletcher, Jasmine and Amelia; great grandchildren Europe, Gabriell, Kyia, Kody, Penelope, Jerric, Kip, Alvis, and Viola; brothers Eugene and Gerald; and many treasured nephews and nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Marlene; son Daniel John, daughter Denise John-Williams; grandson Daniel John Jr.; brothers Roman, Edward, Ervin, Victor and Dennis John, and sister Florence (John) Rischmiller.

Services were held Wednesday, July 14th at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie.

Accident: July 10, 2021: At approximately 2:43 p.m. responded to an accidental firearm discharge on the 36000 block of County Road 171 in Melrose Township.

Deputies spoke with several witnesses who were at a family gathering where several people were partaking in clay pigeon shooting. A juvenile had finished shooting and was unloading a 20-gauge Remington pump-style shotgun when the firearm discharged. The barrel of the shotgun was pointed towards the gravel driveway when it went off. The blast of the bird-shot shotgun shell ricocheted towards bystanders who were watching the shooters about 20 to 30 feet away. Several small pellets struck a 4-year-old, a 9-year-old, and 67-yearold.

The adult victim was treated at the Sauk Centre Hospital and released. Both juvenile victims were transported to the St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment. Both juvenile victim’s injuries were non-life threatening.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sauk Centre Police Department. The incident remains under investigation.
