I always end my columns with a moral that wraps up the message in a tidy little package. These lessons are kind of like that: you get the gist without any extra words. This kind of education will especially bring back memories to baby boomers and older, who can attest to the tremendous “home schooling” we received. As I look back on things, moms and dads got their points across, often in a humorous way.

I can’t claim credit for them, and the authorship (perhaps Bert Christensen?) is variously attributed on the web. But they are gems, and in the middle of the long, hot summer, a little humor might brighten your day. Here goes: My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE. “If you’re going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning.”

My mother taught me RELIGION. “You better pray that will come out of the carpet.”

My father taught me about TIME TRAVEL. “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!”

My father taught me LOGIC. “Because I said so, that’s why.”

My mother taught me MORE LOGIC. “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to the store with me.”

My mother taught me FORESIGHT. “Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident.”

My father taught me IRONY. “Keep crying, and I’ll give you something to cry about.”

My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS. “Shut your mouth and eat your supper.”

My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM. “Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!”

My mother taught me about STAMINA. “You’ll sit there until all that spinach is gone.”

My mother taught me about WEATHER. “This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.”

My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY. “If I told you once, I’ve told you a million times. Don’t exaggerate!”

My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION. “Stop acting like your father!”

My mother and father taught me about GRATITUDE. “There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don’t have wonderful parents like you do.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Vacations

When living on a dairy farm, being able to get a vacation is difficult. The cows need to have a couple of hours of your time, both each morning and evening.

W h e n milking 20 cows, each cow’s special needs are taken into consideration, so that maximum health and production are maintained. If the milking machine is left on too long, the cow can be subject to infections. If she gets too much ground feed, she may develop an intestinal problem etc. etc.

They become like small children and get constant attention.

A vacation on our farm included day trips. We milked in the morning, then went to a destination and returned to do the evening milking. The cows had a regular schedule and one tried to avoid breaking their schedule.

The State Fair was one vacation. We left after milking, got to the fair, went to

machinery hill, stopped back to the car to eat Spam or Potted Meat sandwiches, then went to the cattle barns and the DNR fish pool and returned to the farm for the evening milking. Seeing the beautiful farm animals and the newest things in farm machinery occupied our minds for the next days.

Another vacation involved the same milking schedule. We would hear about the blueberries ripening around Leader and Blue Grass and we went there to pick our years supply of berries. It was sort of a work day, but since it was away from the farm, it was a pleasant break.

Most of our contacts with the outside world came from visitors who came to the farm for their vacation. They never stayed for more than a couple of days, I think maybe they found farm life to be too unexciting.

We were tied to the farm, but there was comfort for us, since we felt that we had control of our lives. When one looks back, that feeling is truly missed.

Humor aside, parents are smart.

Despite what their children think, they have been around the block a time or two and know what they are doing.

Each of the three sons spent the rest of his life being good to others to prove that he had the real ring.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ve been living in a rental house for some time now. I was just told by the owners that the house is being foreclosed on next week. I’ve tried to call and email them, but haven’t heard anything back.

Should I go ahead and pay rent for this month?

-John Dear John, I wouldn’t. The bottom line in a situation like this is: You’re giving them money and they’re not paying the bills. I wouldn’t give the owners another dime until they return your phone calls or talk to you in person and let you know the details as to what’s going on with the house you’re living in.

In the meantime, I’d advise speaking with an attorney and a real estate professional in your area to find out exactly what your rights are at this point. Many places require a 30-day notice before renters are required to vacate a property.

they think you’ll give in and do something you can’t really afford to do.

Most of them don’t care about you or your situation as long as they get some money.

They won’t garnish your wages because they can’t. They would have to go through the formal, legal procedure of first suing you and then winning the case. They broke federal law by saying they would garnish your wages but hadn’t sued you. If I’m in your shoes, I’d be filing a complaint against these bozos with the Federal Trade Commission.

Don’t react with fear and panic in the face of debt collector threats. Talk to them and explain your situation. See if you can work out a compromise. If they get nasty or break federal law again, let them know you’ll be filing another complaint with the FTC. You’d be surprised how reasonable these people can be when faced with the possibility of government intervention.

In the meantime, do everything you can to scrape up as much cash as possible. Have a big garage sale and sell everything in your attic or basement you don’t need. Then, when you get this mess cleaned up, pay off the rest of your debts - if you have any - and start living on a written monthly budget!

Obituaries Edna K. Hengemuhle Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 am, Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Long Prairie for Edna K. Hengemuhle, age 97 of Long Prairie who passed away peacefully on Friday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Fr. Omar Guanchez officiated and burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Edna Katherine (Motzko) Hengemuhle was born in Hartford Township on September 10, 1919, to Mary (Clasemann) and Stanley Motzko, the oldest of nine children. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Browerville High School.

Edna married Martin Hengemuhle on February 1, 1941 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Browerville. They lived in Long Prairie and raised five children. In addition to being a mother and homemaker, she was active in St. Mary’s Christian Women, bowling, a sewing club, Moose Lodge, a Girl Scout Leader and matriarch of the Motzko Cousin Club. As a young woman, she worked at Jack’s Café in Long Prairie.

Martin and Edna started the Montgomery Wards Catalog Store in Long Prairie in the mid-sixties. Edna was employed for many years as a Nursing Assistant at the Long Prairie Nursing Home and enjoyed volunteering at church, Meals-on-Wheels, For All Your Cabinet Needs...

and the nursing home, where she was named volunteer of the year in 2000.

Edna will be remembered for her strong faith in God, generosity, and big heart. Her family and friends will miss her superior baking skills, playing cards at the kitchen table, and holding her warm soft hands.

Edna is survived by her children; Judy (John) Rowe of Hibbing, Nancy (Richard) Krauel of Long Prairie, Jane (Allen) Lemke of Osakis, Arlys Hengemuhle (Patrick Bednarz) of St. Cloud, Donald Hengemuhle (Nancy Nordick) of Fergus Falls. Grandchildren; David Rowe, Tammy Exum, Trina Ebinger, Richard (Bernardine) Krauel Jr., Chad (Susan) Krauel, Heather Krauel, Holly (Rich) Bandy, Steve (Sheri) Lemke, James (Jen) Lemke, Kerry Lemke, Josh (Tricia) Hengemuhle, Brandon (Amanda) Carlson, Lynsey (Rob) Parechanian. Steven J. Zimmerman, 54-year-old resident of Elmdale, MN passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at his home.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. CJ Boettcher officiating. Burial took place in the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Steven was born on December 13, 1962 in Little Falls, MN to the late John and Mary (Gerads) Zimmerman. He grew up in the Upsala area where he attended school and graduated with the Class of 1981. He was united in marriage to Tracy Forberg on September 11, 1993 at Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, MN. Steven worked construction early on and later worked at Grede Foundries and the Elmdale Creamery. He was currently working for We Haul For You (moving company) in Holdingford, MN and thoroughly enjoyed his work and co-workers. Steven lived his life by the

A r l e n Kuhlmann, age of 86 of Long Prairie, died peacefully on Saturday, July 1, 2017 with her husband at her side in their rural Long Prairie home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, July 8 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in St. Adalbert’s Cemetery in Little Falls.

Arlen Mae Kuhlmann was born February 3, 1931 in Little Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Lapos) Wyrwicki. She graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Arlen was united in marriage to Jerome H. Kuhlmann June 5, 1950 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, Minnesota.

To this union, two sons were born.

Arlen worked at Harts Department Store in Long Prairie and then at Harts Press/Banta Printing for many years. Arlen had many talents. She spent years painting and designing crafts with her granddaughter and traveled to various craft shows. She then opened a business with her daughterin-law, Primrose Furniture. Arlen spent the next eight years going to auctions with her husband gathering furniture for the store.

motto, “Work Hard, Play Hard.” He enjoyed working in his yard, tending to his garden and flowers and had an incredible ability to fix almost anything. In his free time, he enjoyed agate and mushroom picking, wine making, and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. His passion in life was spending time with his family, especially watching Dylan and Cheryl play sports. His favorite hobbies were spending time in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and especially ice fishing which he enjoyed the most. Steven will forever be remembered for his great sense of humor, his incredible physical strength and the love and dedication he showed to his loving family. He was dearly loved and will be dearly missed.

Steven is survived by loving wife, Tracy of Elmdale, MN; children, Dylan and Cheryl Zimmerman of Elmdale, MN; siblings, Sandy (Bill) Henry of Royalton, MN and Dennis (Maria) Zimmerman of Sauk Rapids, MN; in-laws, Richard and Sandra Forberg of Brooklyn Center, MN; brother-in-law, Ray Zanda of Little Falls, MN; step-father, Rod Brooks of Worthington, MN; step-siblings, Craig (Dot) Brooks, Julie (Stan) Haas, and Tom (Cheryl) Brooks and many nieces and nephews.

Steven was preceded in death by parents, John and Mary Zimmerman and sister, Sue Zanda.

Arlen did it all! Upholstering, painting, and repairing the furniture. She also was a seamstress and loved to can produce from her garden each year. Arlen loved to dance and listen to “Good Country Music.” She played many games of Chinese Checkers and Aggravation with her grandchildren, and many rounds of 6/5/4 with her auxiliary girlfriends. She enjoyed feeding the hummingbirds. Her dogs were her companions.

Arlen was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the Little Sauk Women’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Jerome; two sons and daughtersin-law, Darryl and Peggy Kuhlmann of Long Prairie, Minnesota and Jeffrey and Kristie Kuhlmann of Long Prairie, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Kali (Jeff), Melissa, Heather (Matt), Cameron (Amanda), Devin (Laura), and DJ; three great grandchildren, Austin, Saundra, and Sebastien; sisters, Arliss Velander of Fridley, Minnesota, and Carol (Conrad) Keech of Burnsville, Minnesota.

Arlen was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Emma Wyrwicki; sister, Joan Kulus; brothers-in-law, Leonard Kulus, Jean Velander, and Linus Super.

Serving as casket bearers were Darryl Kuhlmann, Jeffrey Kuhlmann, Cameron Kuhlmann, D.J. Kuhlmann, Austin Sunder and Matthew Kvilhaug.

Ann Yvonne Russell was born June 7, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the daughter of Joseph T. and Carola (Loonan) Russell. She grew up in Minneapolis and was a graduate of St. Margaret’s High School. She attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school at John Hay Elementary School in north Minneapolis. She later received her Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota. She married Randolph T. Brown on June 5, 1971. She

Earl David Mewes

E a r l Mewes, 86, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife and daughters, on Sunday, July 9, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and congestive heart failure.

Earl was born on August 1, 1930, in Clayton, WI, to Fred C. Mewes and Florence (Huberty) Mewes.

The family lived and worked on a dairy farm in rural Clayton, WI. Earl graduated from Clayton High School in 1948 and subsequently attended business college in Minneapolis, MN. He worked as a bookkeeper for a short time in Minneapolis before returning home to Wisconsin, where he became a bartender. He moved to St. Cloud, MN, in 1955 and worked as a bartender at several establishments in the St. Cloud area. He then attended St. Cloud State University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education in 1964. His education was paid for by his own efforts and not by the government. He worked as a business education teacher at Clarissa High School from 1964 to 1966, where he met his bride, Claudia (Paulson) Mewes. They were married on June 4, 1966, in Bemidji, MN. Earl taught for 2 years at Big Lake High School before settling with his young family in Albany, MN to teach for the

then taught school at Columbia Heights for one year. In 1972, Ann and Randy moved to Long Prairie. She taught school in Grey Eagle from 1972 until 1974. While Ann was raising her family, she continued to be a substitute teacher at Long Prairie Public and St. Mary’s School in Long Prairie. She then taught kindergarten at St. Mary’s School from 1988-1990. She later was a teacher’s aide at Long Prairie Public School. Ann loved teaching.

Ann was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. She helped found the Prairie Quilters Group, served on the Long Prairie School Board, and took part in a ski club, birdwatchers group, and a Sunday Coffee Group. She enjoyed, gardening, fishing, camping, canoeing, traveling, attending many hockey games, and spending time with her family.

Ann is survived by her husband, Randy, Long Prairie; sons, Benjamin (Eva) Brown, Chongqing, China, Mark (Katee) Brown, Minneapolis, and Daniel (Meghan) Brown, Melrose; father, Joseph Russell, Minneapolis; siblings, Patricia (Richard) Evans, Fairfax, VA, Mary (Ken) Winters, Falcon Heights, Margaret (Bill Dane) Russell, Minneapolis, Joseph (Barbara) Russell, Decorah, IA; Kathleen (Joyce Zifko) Russell, Ashland, WI, and Carol (Johan) Vastviet, Finoy, Norway; three grandchildren, William, Bennett, and Joseph Brown.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Carola.

Earl was a great teacher who positively influenced generations of students in the Albany area. He served as a strong union leader amongst his peers and was instrumental in starting the Albany Area local chapter of the Minnesota Federation of Teachers. Earl tirelessly represented his colleagues as president and lead negotiator for the teachers’ union and continued to serve as a mentor and trusted advisor to fellow teachers until his retirement in 1992. Earl thoroughly enjoyed his leisure time in retirement. He loved fishing, cooking, reading, following politics, and bird watching. He was a proud Democrat and an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins.

Earl is survived by his wife of 51 years, Claudia Mewes of Albany; his sister, Hazel (Eldred) Merle of Almena, WI; daughters Carmen Mewes of Albany, Gwen (Douglas) Sullivan of Smithfield, NC, and Joan (Vernon) Berg of Moorhead, MN, and 8 grandchildren: Alicia Linares, Andre Linares, Samuel Mewes, Abigail Berg, Maris Berg, Savannah Sullivan, Audrey Berg, and Caleb Sullivan; as well as numerous brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and greatnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-mother, Mary (Hylkema) Mewes; brothers Howard Mewes, Fred Mewes, and Dean Mewes; and a sister, Olga Alstadt.

A celebration of Earl’s life will be held on Friday, July 21, beginning at 3 p.m. at the North Park (Hospital Park) in Albany.

He interned at St. Johns Hospital in Chicago and worked under Dr. Homer Stryker in Kalamazoo, MI. Joe served in the Coast Guard Reserves and was chief of orthopedic surgery with the US Public Health Service Hospital in New Orleans before settling his family in Fargo, ND. He was a founding member of Dakota Clinic, Ltd. where he practiced

Eileen E. Schmiesing, age 91 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 17 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

She was a homemaker and also helped her husband on the farm west of Meire Grove.

Eileen continued to live on the farm after retirement and had spent the last five years at Pine Villa in Melrose. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, St. Mary’s Society, and St. John’s Catholic United Financial.

We often hear phrases about “spending quality time with loved ones” or “living a quality life.” But unless we define quality in scriptural terms, “quality” may not be what “quality” is.

Our psalmist wants us to know that even standing at the edge of the temple is better than being inside the tent of a wicked person. Why is this so? It is because of God Himself! Simply being in His presence is a reward.

For the psalmist it is not the beauty of the place but the beauty of a Person.

“God is a sun and a shield,” he declares, referring to the absolute glory of God as a person and protector of those who serve Him. With His love upon us and His glory around us, we can be assured that He will not withhold any good things from us if we walk with Him and live lives that are blameless - or lives of integrity.

But along our way in this walk with Him, He will give us “grace and glory.”

Glory refers to His “grace” that He gives to those who are His own. It is His grace that saves us with the faith He gives us because of His love for us.

Grey Eagle Township July 3, 2017 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 5, 2017 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June.

Claims list included 9 claims 30753083 for a total of $15,802.31. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second.

Motion carried unanimously. Mail included U of M training information, P&Z letters and a pipeline safety letter.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that the crack filling will be put off until spring to get better results. Ray contacted Carr’s Tree Service for spraying brush, at $160 per hour. Mike made a motion to have them spray spots designated during the spring road check. Ray made the second, motion carried.

Ray removed a tree on 311th and suggested cutting approx. 4 more fallen trees in road right of way before mowing begins. Ray will take care of those. Mowing- bids from two contractors, the Board decided on Cutting Edge Tree Service to also cut some of the brush in the road right of way and to do more than one swath. Mike made the motion to hire Cutting Edge, Ray made the second, motion carried.

Review of bids for tar project- Due to differences in road numbers and gravel amounts it was determined to revoke the Knife River bid that was accepted at the June 5, meeting. Mike made the motion to revoke that bid, Ray made the second.

Motion carried. After discussion on which roads, amount of gravel and tar and the required width, it was determined to accept the Tri-City Paving bid. Ray made the motion to accept the Tri-City bid, Mike made the second, motion carried. Work on the Arctic Drive culvert has not yet been finished. 321st Ave. will need some gravel and a more permanent metal culvert.

Meeting Date changes: For

August the meeting will be held on August 14, for September the meeting will be September 11.

Public Comment: A question was asked about payment for beavers trapped. Ray made the motion to pay for the two beavers at $50.00 each, as this was helpful in lowering the water level. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m.

Swanville City June 6, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson and Tony Maciej. Absent: Deb Wood.

Also present: Mark Hallen, reporter Sheila McCoy, Steve Gruber, Laurie Peterson, Amy Karjala and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, May 2, 2017 were reviewed. A motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes as printed.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

There is an alley way behind 610 Rhoda Avenue that was not vacated back in 1938 when all the rest of land was vacated. With that, the property owner is asking if this alley could be vacated by the city now. In order to vacate this alley there needs to be a Public Hearing and after that a resolution needs to be past and then be recorded. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to have a public hearing on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at 6:45 p.m. before the regular monthly meeting. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mark Hallen, city engineer, was present to go over the North Berkey Avenue Project. A preconstruction meeting was held Wednesday, May 31 with project contractors. Work started Monday, June 5 with storm and public sewer work under County Road 12. Next

will be water and utility work. If all goes well, work will be completed on Co. Rd. 12 and reopened on Friday, June 9. Hallen asked council if another water hydrant should be installed in the project. The cost would be about $4500.00. Jim Molitor made a motion to have another water hydrant installed in the project. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The covenant for the lots in the North Berkey Avenue Addition was looked over and discussed.

After discussion Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the Declaration of Covenants for the North Berkey Avenue Addition. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Laurie Peterson and Steve Gruber were present to ask council if they could secure Lot 3 Block 1 in the North Berkey Addition. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to secure lot 3 Block 1 for 90 days upon completion of the North Berkey Avenue Project and then one year upon completion of the purchase agreement with a down payment of $500.00 and the balance being paid at the time of purchase. Purchase price shall be returned should they decide not to purchase in the allotted time. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Paper work was given to council for the issuance, sale and delivery of $270,000.00 general obligation tax increment note to be used for the North Berkey Avenue Project. Council looked over and discussed. After discussion, Norm Carlson introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption for resolution authorizing the issuance, sale, and delivery of $279,000 general obligation tax increment note, series 2017A. The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by member Tony Maciej and upon a vote being taken, the following voted I favor thereof: Mayor Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. And the following voted against the same: none.

Whereupon the resolution was declared duly passes and adopted.

The Swanville Lions Club is requesting a 3 day temporary strong liquor license for the Swanville Carnival July 7, 8, and 9. Tony Maciej made a motion to give the Swanville Lions Club a 3 day temporary strong liquor license for a fee of $80.00 for July 7, 8, and 9, 2017. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. looked at. Jesse Hollermann would like to add a 20’x16’ cement patio on his property. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve Hollermann’s permit. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Josh Larum would like to add a 26’x26’ garage and 24’x20’ cement slab. Council decided to table until they can visit with Larum about the application.

There are land owners within the city with grass taller than 7” which violates the city ordinance.

Letters will be sent to these land owners. There are also landowners with junk cars on their property, which also violates the city’s junk car ordinance. Letters will also go out to these land owners.

Amy Karjala was present to ask for a land use permit to put up a privacy fence on her property at 406 DeGraff Avenue. Karjala has had the property surveyed and found out the neighbors garage is two feet on her property and is wondering how far the fence has to be from the garage. After discussion, council agreed Karjala needs to fill out a land use application and bring the application to the next Planning and Zoning meeting. In the mean time Mayor Lange will visit with the city attorney and report the information to the P & Z committee.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, July 5, 2017, because of the 4th of July, with a Public Hearing at 6:45 p.m. held before the monthly meeting.

People present Morrison County Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Public Works Superintendent Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels. He finished discharging for the spring. Approximately 20,000 gallons of water was used for the fire in Sobieski.

Borgstrom Street Sewer: The sewer lines on Borgstrom Street are working as expected since the

repairs made by Kraemer Trucking & Excavating.

Well #3: Koopmeiners showed the council pictures of the old water filter and the new water filter for well #3 - explaining that the old filter has a large buildup of iron.

This iron buildup caused the water flowing through the filter to decrease tremendously. Koopmeiners replaced the filter and motor.

Fire Department Report: The May report was submitted.

Lange updated the council stating the Fire Department is ready for Heritage Days; they will have a bouncy house and kids games at the Rec Building for the kids in the evening.

The Fire Department received a donation from Monsanto towards grain bin extrication equipment.

They also will be receiving a donation from the American Dairy Association for assisting with parking at ‘Breakfast On the Farm.’

The old tanker Freightliner will be going on the K-Bid online auction.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the July Calendar and upcoming events.

Stevens shared the final drafts of the City’s new brochure. Alex Determann, city intern, has been working with local community leaders to help develop the final drafts.

Bartells moved to approve Layout #2 as the finished product and to contract with Weber Printing

to print 2000 brochures at a cost of $777.60, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Stevens discussed the electronics that the Fire Dept. wants to keep at the Fire Hall vs. moving them to the new City Hall location.

The new website is scheduled to be launched this next Monday, July 10.

Planning Commission: The Planning and Zoning Commission approved two permits; one for a chain link fence, the second for Wolstad’s permit to renovate Mt. Olive church to a residential home at 211 Johnson Street.

The Commissioners also discussed a sump pump and storm water runoff ordinance.

UCDC: Report Submitted.

Bartells explained they are taking pre-orders for centennial t-shirts and sweatshirts.

The Frosted Cookie will be selling 3- inch cookies with the Heritage Days logo for $1.30 each.

The committee will be meeting in the park prior to the meeting to get the layout set up.

Recreation Board: No meeting held. Next meeting is July 25.

Unfinished Business: Mount Olive Update: John and Marilyn Wolstad purchased Mount Olive and are renovating it into a house.

A Float in the Parade - By John Young We are right in the middle of parade season here in Central Minnesota!

Each weekend we have community celebrations with the (almost) mandatory town parade.

If you aren’t into standing to watch these local parades, we stream most of them on the Hometown News Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/hometownnews or on our website with our Youtube video links.

Many local businesses hit these community parades to show their support for the event (which is very important to build that small town sense of community) and to do a bit of branding for their business.

Parades can be a great PART of a marketing and advertising plan to get the word out on your new business. Remember, if you DON’T invest in your business and tell folks you are there, you can’t complain when no one comes to do business with you. It always astounds me when folks start a business and don’t bother to invest in a bit of advertising to get their name out and circulating in the communities.

If you are thinking about jumping into one of the area parades, here are a few thoughts that might make your float a bit more effective for the branding of your business in the area.

1. Have Signage: If people can’t tell who you are or where you are from... you are wasting your businesses time and money in the parade! You might have heard me lament a bit during our live streams about floats that don’t have signage and we have no idea of who they are!

2. Place Signage Properly: Make sure it is easy to find out who you are by putting signage in a variety of locations. You should have one facing the front, some on the sides, and maybe a reminder sign on the back. That way, people can easily tell who you are at ANY time as you pass by because the signs are present.

3. Make Signage Readable: Most of the parade attendees are between 50 to 100 feet from your float. Choose easy to read fonts (letters or the type used on the sign) and make sure they are large enough (and thick enough) to read from those distances.

Fancy script fonts or small type are tough to read and brings you right back to wasting your time and money if folks can not easily see who you are.

4. Catch Attention: Throwing candy, having music, decorating the float to match the theme are all good ways to grab a bit of attention in the parade. Let’s look at these three in more depth.

4A. Throwing Candy: Throw a variety of candy at the parade. Many floats will choose to go as cheap as possible and throw out Tootsie Rolls only. While it is nice they are throwing candy; there is a growing trend where today’s kids won’t bother to pick up the mini Tootsie Rolls. Mix in other candies

with your Tootsie Rolls, and you will bring the kids out and they will hopefully pick up the candy thrown their way.

NOTE: If you want to do bottles of water or frozen treats, HAND those out along the parade route! Frozen things or bottles (or even larger items) will break, crack or leak making a mess of the bags of candy.

Leaking frozen pops will make you very unpopular with parents as the melted syrup leaks in the car on the way home.

4B. Having Music: Music is a great way to grab attention. In one area parade this year, some grabbed attention with music because of their good song choice and toe-tapping songs, while others turned people off with poor sound quality and very loud, distorted music. Be sure to have a decent sound system and do not push it too hard and distort the sound. Most professional speakers can get very loud and at the parade, loud can interfere with other floats on the route and cost you potential referrals. Get quality sound equipment, pick crowd favorite songs, keep it VERY clean music wise, and play the music so it features your float as you go by. NOTE: Be a good neighbor and walk to see how loud the music is near the floats behind or ahead of your float.

4C: Decorating Your Float: If there is a theme and you can do something dramatic or fun, then DO IT! If you can’t be great with the theme, then just make your float look nice and clean. Don’t make it look like a rolling junk wagon. Streamers and other decorations can be adversely affected by warm and humid weather. Design your float to be able to take a bit of rain and still look great!

5. Smile On The Float: You are there to represent your business. Don’t look like you are pained to be there! Put on your game face and smile and pretend you are happy to be there. A warm smile and a wave as you head down the parade route go a long way to helping the branding of your business!

6. Keep Your Distance: The final tip, be aware of the space between your float and the float ahead of you. You don’t want the gap to be 1/2 a block (or more), and you don’t do yourself any good by being on the bumper of the float ahead of you. Plan a space of about 2-3 car lengths (50-75 feet) between you and the float ahead of you. Oh yes, and drive down the middle of the road.

Parades are the only time when you can use that middle of the road legally, so be sure to do that!

Library Book Drop Box: Library Service Coordinator Wanda Erickson sent a letter to the council explaining their recent safety audit.

She is requesting the Council consider a different means to reduce the potential risk from malicious

drops in the book drop box.

Fee Schedule Update: Bartells moved to approve the updated Fee Schedule that reflects the new water rate structure and the fee of $250 for residents and non-residents for inurnments at the City’s cemetery with a maximum of six (6) inurnments per lot, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Thriving Communities, Initiative Foundation: Johnson explained the Thriving Communities Project offered by the Initiative Foundation stating that he will be asking various residents to participate in the project.

ServLine Program, MN Rural Water: Minnesota Rural Water is offering an educational lunch on protecting utilities against losses from residential customers.
