Bring change to your work life -By Harvey Mackay

Many times, in order to survive we have to start a change process. Change, for most people, is an unnerving experience. But as the old saying goes, change is inevitable. It’s one of the only constants in life.

I have said before, it is easy to change things. It is not so easy to change people. And therein lies the rub. As author Bruce Barton observed, “When you are through changing, you are through.”

Most organizations won’t survive if they don’t learn how to change as they grow and adapt to market conditions.

But employees sometimes resist any-

thing new – not because they’re stubborn or old-fashioned, but for these basic reasons: • They don’t see the need. Management must explain why the change is necessary – how it will help the company, customers and employees themselves. Set the stage for people. If employees don’t know what’s happening in the company and in its industry, they won’t see any reason to do things differently. Share as much as possible about finances, problems the organization is facing, and what’s likely to happen if nothing is done.

• They’re afraid of the unknown.

Employees may not understand exactly what they’ll have to do differently, or how the change will affect their daily lives. Or they may worry that they don’t have the skills they’ll need to adapt. Tell them what’s changing, and give them the training and support required.

• Management didn’t seek their input. Employees need a sense of control over their work and their careers. Include them in planning from Not sure what you’re going to do after school? Birth Announcement Gracie Mae Pitcher

Michael and Jo Lee Pitcher of Freeport are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Gracie Mae Pitcher, born Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 1:13 p.m. at CentraCare HealthMelrose.

Gracie weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and 21 ½ inches in length.

Welcoming Gracie home is her big brother Ayden, 5 years and big sisters Kylie, 11 years and Anna Lynn, 2 years old.

• They aren’t focused on the long term. Change is a process, not a single event. Emphasize that it will take time, and to be successful people will have to look to the future, not to short-term gains and losses. Remember that performance won’ be transformed overnight. Once a company has restructured, implemented new systems or launched new strategies, allow adequate time for a learning curve. Don’t be so impatient for results so as to sabotage their efforts.

• They don’t see commitment from the top. Change needs to start at the highest levels of the organization. If management is not setting a spectacular example, demonstrating an absolutely united front, then the rank and file has no reason to jump on board. Will every manager immediately embrace new practices and procedures? They will if they value their jobs!

be willing to periodically assess changes to see if they are really producing the expected results. Then, and only then, if the outcome isn’t satisfactory, reassess and figure out how to change things for the better.

In his best-selling book “Who Moved My Cheese,” Spencer Johnson, used this parable to dramatize human resistance to change. The story contains four imaginary characters named Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw. “Sniff and Scurry” are two mice.

Hem and Haw are “little people,” small as mice but containing all the qualities of human beings. All four characters are intended to represent the simple and the complex parts of ourselves, regardless of our age, gender, race or nationality.

According to the book’s introduction, sometimes we may act like: • Sniff, who sniffs out change early, or • Scurry, who scurries into action at

the slightest provocation, or • Hem, who denies and resists change as he fears it will lead to something worse, or • Haw, who learns to adapt in time when he sees changing leads to something better.

“Whatever parts of us we choose to use,” Johnson writes, “we all share something in common: a need to find our way in the maze and succeed in changing times.”

Mackay’s Moral: The only people who like change are wet babies.

Obituaries Albert L. “Al” Greener Albert L. “Al” Greener, age 91 of Albany, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany with Rev. Bradley Pearson officiating. Inurnment was in St. John’s Cemetery, which followed the lunch.

Albert Louis Greener was born October 22, 1921 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Michael and Eva (Loehlein) Greener. Albert served in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1946 during World War II. He then worked at the Ford plant in St. Paul from 1946 through 1949. On February 12, 1949 he was united in marriage to Bernice Teske at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Krain Township.

He continued to work at the Ford plant for three months until moving back to Krain Township to farm.

He was a member of Our Savior’s

Clara Klimmek

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Clara Klimmek, age 94 of Holdingford, was held July 9, 2013 at All Saints, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Clara, four days shy of her 95th birthday, passed away at her son’s home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

Clara was born July 8th, 1918 in Albany, Minnesota, to Matt and Agnes (Kuper) Heinen. She grew up in Albany and married Reuben Klimmek on April 26th, 1941. The couple moved to a farm near Holdingford. Clara spent many years farming with her husband

He was mechanically inclined and loved working on John Deere tractors and farm equipment.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Greener of Albany; children, Glen (Carol) Greener of Albany and Jane Achman of Freeport; grandchildren, Jackie Doubek, Jason Achman, Beth Pallow, Crystal Zeman, Russ Achman, Mike Greener and Emily Greener; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bernice Sitzman of Houston, Texas and Beatrice Douvier of Melrose.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roman Greener, Conrad Greener, and Edward Greener; and sisters, Eleanor Christen, Leona Gasperlin, Marion Roehl, and Marcella Millard.

Serving as honorary bearers were Jackie Doubek, Jason Achman, Beth Pallow, Crystal Zeman, Russ Achman, Mike Greener, and Emily Greener.

Clara is survived by her children; Larry Klimmek, Cold Spring; Jean Goebel, St. Cloud; Janet (Doug) Paulsen, Phoenix, Arizona; daughterin-law, Dori Klimmek, St. Cloud; sister Helen Scepaniak, Albany; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, husband Reuben Klimmek, son Lloyd Klimmek, grandson Joe Goebel, granddaughter Connie Sue, great granddaughter Stephanie Hommerding.

Also, preceding her in death were her sisters Mary Bloch , Elizabeth Miller, and Theresa Ewertowsky, and her brothers Barney Heinen, Matt Heinen, Herman Heinen, Tony Heinen, and Andrew Heinen.

Cassandra Kociemba of Grey Eagle, MN, received a Master of Science degree in Communicative Disorders during spring commencement at the University of Wisocnsin-River Falls in May. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to 720 undergraduates while 87 students received master’s degrees.

The Office of the Registrar at the University of Minnesota, Crookston recently announced its list of spring semester 2013 graduates. Students completed their degree requirements during spring semester 2013.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston enrolls approximately 1,800 full-time students and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The U of M, Crookston is a four-year baccalaureate degree granting institution, dedicated to learning, discovery and engagement in northwest Minnesota.

Students earning their degrees include: Erin M Ohman of Avon, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Science.

Jordan James Prill of Melrose, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication.

Benjamin P. Wuebkers of Freeport, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.

Today the University of Minnesota Crookston delivers 28 bachelor’s degree programs, 20 minors, and 39 concentrations on campus--as well as 11 degrees online--in the areas of agriculture and natural resources; business; liberal arts and education; and math, science and technology. Community Covenant Church to celebrate 125 years

125 years ago the Swedish Evangelical Mission Church in Upsala officially began. Prior to 1888, a large number of worshipers met in homes, barns, or at the Swedback’s Store. “In January of 1888, the believers were gathered, and the question was whether a stronger association was needed in order to perform God’s work. All present voted by standing up in jubilation and triumph. A congregation was thus formed.”

Bob’s Balancing is No Act

By Saralee Perel When my husband, Bob, is unhappy, it breaks my heart.

So I did what most conventional, predictable people do. I took him to a Quantum Field Healing séance, oops, I mean session, to have his energy fields balanced. Doesn’t everybody do that?

I called my friend, nationally noted healer, Marcia Sloane Heusted.

She knew I was clueless about cockamamie, I mean alternative therapies.

The night before the appointment, I dreamed we crept into Marcia’s dark, crypt-like dungeon. Walls were flanked by spider webs hanging like thick wet ropes. Tall black candles oozed hot blood-red liquid. There was the smell of century-old monk robes and century-old monks.

Bob woke me. He doesn’t sleep well when I scream.

“Cancel it, Bob. Marcia will levitate you and make you speak in tongues – in Yiddish!”

“Saralee, I’m not canceling.”

“You’ll be channeling a Jewish Dorothy. You’ll chant, ‘Latkes and blintzes and borscht. Oy vey!’”

That next day, we met with Marcia. Her room was brilliantly lit with sunlight. She was radiant and welcoming, like my favorite counselor at summer camp. She offered us tea.

“Don’t drink that potion, Bob,” I whispered. “You’ll die.”

Having no knowledge of Bob, much less his depression of late, she

asked him no questions.

I don’t know why I shielded myself from faith. When Marcia spoke of trusting the universe, I remained distant.

Bob stretched out on her table. In gentle flowing motions, she moved her hands above his body, stopping at times. I never asked what she was doing. I’ve known Marcia for 20 years.

We trust each other unconditionally.

At the end, Bob slowly sat up. He kept his eyes closed, feeling a new sensation of peace. He said to Marcia, “When you look at me, you see a different person than anyone else does. I feel more content than I have in years.” He cried when he said, “Something has changed.”

I felt an astonishing realization: A far-reaching healing had occurred.

And so, Bob is no longer burdened with heavy sadness. Did the experience change him? Yes. How? I don’t know. Does that matter?

I believe that Marcia is an intuitive, a word she says with shyness.

She has a gift I do not understand. But I saw a change. No doubt about it.

In that, I have complete faith.

For months, Bob had stopped doing the things he enjoyed. He lost interest in gardening, cooking and taking photos of our pets. Although he’s won 14 blue ribbons at the county fair, he stopped baking.

But today the zinnias are displaying their colors. My e-mail is full of new pictures of our dog and cats.

And this morning I awoke to the heavenly aroma of homemade zucchini bread.

DNR offers deer hunting clinic Aug. 11

Adults and youth who want to learn the basics of deer hunting are invited to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) deer day on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., on the Wilkens farm near Mora in Kanabec County.

The free program, which is geared for adults who want to learn more about deer hunting, will be hosted by the DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors Family program. Youth, ages 10 and older, are welcome to attend if they are accompanied by a guardian.

From Wasioja to Washington Movie showing July 16 This Civil War documentary tells the story of what happened to the men and boys from Wasioja and Dodge County. Wasioja is a small town in southeastern MN about 20 miles west of Rochester. This film tells how “The Boys of Wasioja” were recruited from Northwestern College Seminary to muster at Fort Snelling as the Second Minnesota Company C. The film follows the men and boys through the Battle of Mill Springs, The Battle of Chicka-

mauga, the March to Atlanta and the March to the Sea with General Sherman, and the Routing of South Carolina ending with the Grand March at the war’s end. The film then follows these brave men as they are mustered out at Fort Snelling.

This movie will be shown for free at the Stearns History Museum on Tuesday, July 16th, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. We hope you will join us to watch this great documentary honoring Minnesotan’s in the Civil War.

Volunteers picking up trash along highways save state $6 million annually Volunteers helping with the Adopt a Highway program pick up 26,000 tons of litter per year, saving the state an estimated $6 million annually, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The Adopt a Highway program currently is staffed by more than 49,000 volunteers from the public who are helping to clean up 11,000 miles of Minnesota’s highways.

“They volunteer because they want to keep Minnesota highways beautiful and they take pride in what they do,” said Ernest Lloyd, state Adopt a Highway program administrator. “Because of their contributions, our crews can spend more time on highway improvement and safety projects.”

Even with these great efforts, MnDOT is looking for more volunteers to help with this public service campaign, Lloyd said.

To become part of the program, the volunteer groups agree to: • Adopt a highway for a minimum of two years • Select a segment of highway approximately two miles in length • Pick up litter on both sides of the highway • Pick up litter as often as needed from spring through fall, usually two to three times MnDOT provides safety vests for each volunteer and trash bags for cleanup events. The high-visibility

color and reflective tape help make litter crews more visible to passing motorists.

MnDOT crews pick up the filled bags and large, heavy or hazardous items from the roadside after the group completes its cleanup. State workers, not volunteers, are responsible for litter pickup along the interstate.

Unauthorized signs and objects not allowed on state highway rights of way The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds citizens that placing unauthorized signs and other objects on state highway rights of way is illegal and can be dangerous.

“With warm weather, there is a significant increase in advertising signs and items for sale placed illegally along state roadways,” said Mark Renn, Mn/DOT’s roadway regulations supervisor in St. Cloud.

Placing signs or objects in highway rights of way is a misdemeanor violation with a maximum $1,000 fine and/or 90 days in jail. Highway rights of way include driving lanes, shoulders, ditches, clear zones and sight corners at intersections.

State law also says that items may not be placed on private property outside of the right of way limits but in proximity to a roadway without consent of the landowner.

“Illegally placed signs and objects can distract and restrict the visibility of drivers in many situations, especially at intersections,” said Rich Munch, Mn/DOT’s roadway regulations supervisor in the Baxter.

“They are also a hazard to legal users of the right of way, including people using ATVs and crews working on utilities.”

Mn/DOT crews will remove all signs within the right of way without notice.

Sadly, it seems that most of the time when we call upon the Lord for His help, guidance, peace or comfort, it is when we are facing life’s biggest threats or problems. When life is pleasant and pleasurable we rarely pause to think about Him or thank Him for the good times. When difficulties arise and we call for help in a hurry, we may not know what to say or how to say it.

If we know how to pray when the sun shines, we will know how to pray when the storm comes.

Most of us have time to pray when we have major problems. We need to develop the habit of praying at all times, and soon we will discover that “God is a very present help in times of trouble.”

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Thought for Updating changes in local aid, healthcare the week:

In addition to cities and counties receiving increased local government aid, townships are also in line to receive state aid for the first time in many years.

Ten million dollars has been appropriated for townships, while cities and counties will get an Increase in LGA of upwards of $100 million.

I received a preliminary run of the amounts townships will receive next year, and the breakdown is a bit surprising. It appears that townships with higher populations will receive less aid, while those with higher percentages of agricultural land will get more. In general, the aid figures are based on three factors, total township land, total ag. land, and population.

Two townships in Stearns County will receive more than $14,000 in state aid. They are Spring Hill at $14,231 and Zion at $14,104. Three others, Ashley, Lake Henry, and Raymond are all slated to receive over $12,000. On the low end, LeSauk Township will get only $206 and St. Joseph Township $912.

In Pope County, the range is from $10,663 for New Prairie Township down to $1,565 for Minnewaska. In Douglas County, the high is $7,417 for Belle River Township down to $1054 for Alexandria Township and $1,699 for

La Grande.

A surprising announcement from Washington last week delays the start of the employee mandate that’s part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This would appear to be good news for employers who could have been faced with administrative problems and potentially higher healthcare costs. Keep in mind, however, that the ACA contains two mandates; one for employers with more than 50 employees (the mandate delayed for one year), and one for individuals. The individual mandate has NOT been delayed.

The effect of the employer delay on MNsure, Minnesota’s health insurance exchange, is not clear. MNsure has said it will not affect their operations.

However, according to research staff from the House Republican Caucus, the delay will likely result in more people enrolling through the Exchange in the individual market. This could have an impact on insurance premiums and on MNsure’s administrative costs. Since a large number of people could remain uncovered by health insurance because of the employer mandate delay, they may turn to the Exchange’s individual market if they are eligible for a premium subsidy. This would increase the number of subsidies the federal government must provide, while the delay of the mandate penalty will likely decrease the government’s revenue.

All in all, it’s a big new government program that very likely will have several bumps in the road as it rolls out. I keep reminding myself that nothing govern-

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township July 1, 2013 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Added David Tomsche for Association of Property Owners on Sandy Beach. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second.

All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the June 3, 2013 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to approve the minutes as written. Mike made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Zoning Report: Review of the public hearing. Having no further discussion, Ray made the motion to have planning & zoning authority go back to Todd County. Mike made the second.

On a vote Mike and Ray voted for and Ron voted against. Motion carried with a 2-1 vote. Ron asked what the board would like to do about the permit application that was received on June 19th. Ray made the motion that the permit be granted since it was received before the decision was made to change the zoning authority.

Mike made the second. Permit was granted. Ray attended a public hearing on a non-conforming lot on Mound Lake and reported that the County agreed to change it to a conforming lot, but that no permit had been issued yet.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for June.

Claims list included 11 claims for a total of $15,322.63. Ray made the motion to approve the claims. Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. The clerk gave a report on the Township Short Course, asking that the board approve a $300.00 update

of the CTAS program. Ray made the motion to approve the update, Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of May 31, 2013: $176,776.01; Checks cleared: 14, $5,908.58; Deposits including interest: $124,832.75; Balance as of June 30, 2013: $295,700.18; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $295,700.18; CD Balance: $102,786.66 Mike made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Road and Bridge Report: David Tomsche was present as President of the Associated Property Owners of Sandy Beach. He had some questions as to who was responsible for maintaining the road and right of way, especially given the recent storm damage and the number of trees that fell. Ray stated that it was the townships job to clear the roads, however, the township does not own the trees, especially those over 6” in diameter. It was determined that the township needs to have a policy in place as to who is responsible for trees that fall on roadways and who is responsible for cleanup of the ditches and brush. Ray felt the board should authorize Herdering Inc. to take care of tree removal in the event of another wind storm.

The township board will work on this at upcoming meetings.

Ray reported on several jobs that had been completed and some; such as shoulder work on 341st and tar patch on Brakken Rd that need to be taken care of yet. The beaver issue on Ascot Rd. has been solved. Ditch mowing was discussed and Ray made the motion to hire Erv Muellner to cut the township road ditches, he is to do two swaths just once unless the board feels it is necessary to cut again. Mike made the second.

Motion carried.

Additional agenda items: A resident asked to be notified if Trygg Hanson was on the agenda for the next meeting.

Public Comment: Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Tim Grittner to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mike Rude, city engineer, was present to give a report on the Rhoda Avenue project.

Mike stated that all the permits have been approved for the project. Ads for project bid have been placed in the Morrison County Record and in the Finance and Commerce magazine. Interested bidders can also go online or receive a bid package from the city clerk. Bids will be opened on June 24, 2013 at 9:00am in the Swanville Center. Bids will be read out loud and WSN will confirm the bid totals. WSN will have the confirmed bid totals ready for council to award the contractor at the Tuesday, July 2, 2013 city council meeting.

Council discussed having all businesses and residents of the city to be hooked up to city water. After discussion Jim Molitor made a motion to go along with what was decided at the April, 2013 meeting, to have businesses hooked up to city water in 2 years and have residents hooked up to city water in 5 years. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor except Tim Grittner. Motion carried. Letters will be sent to business and residents who need to be hooked up to city water.

It was brought to the attention of the council there is a lot of feed dust in the air from the mill.

Council will revisit this issue at the next council meeting.

Council members have been getting complaints about residents with garbage on their property.

Letters will be sent to these residents to have the property cleaned up before June 30, 2013 or the city will have the yards cleaned up and the cleanup charge will be paid by the land owners or it will be added to the property taxes.

Land use permits were looked at, the following permits have been approved by the P&Z committee also. Toby Wipf built a privacy fence on the back side of his property. Motion by Jim Molitor to approve but, Wipf has to pay an additional $50.00 fee because he put up the fence without approval first. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. Motion carried. Kathy VanNorman wants to put up an 8x12 garage. AJ Johnson made a motion to approve. Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

Motion carried. Roto Molding would like to build an 80x208 building in the industrial park.

Anderson Brothers Contractors would like to get water from the city this summer for their road projects. Council agreed they will be charged the same rate as residents per thousand gallons of water taken.

It was called to the attention of the council by the city auditor that the city is still holding the performance bond from Waste Management. The council instructed the clerk to close out the account and send a check to Waste Management for the performance bond.

The city auditor also advised council that a transfer of funds in the amount of $15,000.00 should be transferred from the water fund into the PFA water project fund.

Mayor Peterson made a motion to have this transfer done. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Swanville Lions are asking for a 3day 3/2 beer license for the Swanville Carnival taking place on June 28, 29, and 30, 2013. Jim Molitor made a motion to give the 3/2 license for these 3 days to the Lions and to have the music play until 12:30am. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor motion carried.

Bryan Allen from Red’s Irish Pub would like to have a band on the deck on Friday nights. Jim Molitor made a motion to allow the bands to play on the deck but, the music would have to end by 11:30pm. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Red’s would like to have a street dance on June 22 and August 10. Tim Grittner made a motion to allow both street dances with the music to end at 1:00am on those occasions. Mayor Peterson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 7:30pm.

New Business: City Clerk Adrian Welle informed the council that they all need to attend a Board of Equalization meeting if they have not already taken the class.

Volunteer support surged at Great River Regional Library during 2012, with increases in total volunteers and total hours of service.

The library system’s volunteer base increased from approximately 550 to 670 individuals. In addition, at least three volunteer groups who assisted on special projects. Together, they provided 19,657.5 hours of service at the library’s 32 locations. This is an increase of approximately 3,250 hours over the 2011 total.

The increase can be attributed to several factors, according to library Human Resources Coordinator Sunny Hesse, who oversees the volunteer program.

“We’ve introduced some new procedures, which I think may be causing more accurate reporting of volunteer hours. We’ve increased our attention to volunteer recognition, which we hope is acting as an incentive and reward for volunteer service. And, there were major projects going on at some of our libraries that called for increased volunteer participation.”

Whatever the reason, Hesse said, the library welcomes volunteers. They can improve the library experience for others and help connect the library to its community. “When volunteers see what it takes for the library to function effectively, they are likely to become advocates for library services,” she said. “And we have many volunteers who find library service to be personally rewarding.”
