Achieving goals produces significant accomplishments.

A courageous spirit. Courage is what sets you apart from the crowd. Courage is ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Courage is regarded as one of the major human virtues. Courage is bravery, valor, standing up to danger, guts and nerves all rolled into one. So what does courage have to do with running a business? Plenty. I admit that most folks’ daily lives are not filled with such dramatic challenges. We all face situations that require us to reach down deep within ourselves to do what is right and brave and occasionally difficult.

Courage can involve making decisions that are unpopular or time-consuming or even expensive.

An inquisitive mind. I’m a big believer in lifelong learning. You don’t go to school once for a lifetime; you are in school all of your life. Pursue

learning in all its forms – reading books, returning to school, attending seminars and training classes, listening to those who are wiser and more experienced.

A strong heart. What makes a champion? Is it attitude, confidence, courage, desire, determination, discipline, endurance, mental toughness, perseverance, physical ability, selfdiscipline or visualization? Yes. It’s probably a little bit of all these characteristics, but it’s also a lot of heart.

In addition, it takes a strong heart to be a successful businessperson. Use your head, to be sure, but don’t ignore what your heart is telling you.

An analytical brain. Do your homework; get the facts. Learn to analyze details. Often the best ideas stem from little seeds everyone else overlooked.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 common complaints? Too many irons in the fire. Too many projects spinning at one time. Too many interruptions. Too many phone calls. Too many emails.

Too many things to do. Too little time.

Stay focused as best you can, and don’t let things happen to you – not when you can make things happen.

A fearless approach.

Innovate.

Be different. Those who are content to follow the crowd never get the chance to stand out. Believe in yourself even when no one else does.

If you believe in what you are doing, your confidence will win over skeptics.

Confidence doesn’t come naturally to most people. Even the most successful people have struggled with it in their careers. The good news is that you can develop confidence, just like any muscle or character trait, if you’re willing to work hard.

A disciplined tongue. He or she who burns bridges better be a very good swimmer. You must learn the art of communicating effectively with others. Clear communications prevent miscommunications. When you say

what you mean, mean what you say and you keep your word, you foster trust.

Stick to the subject at hand, and avoid the temptation to dredge up old issues.

A clear conscience. Always act like your mother is watching. Don’t forget those rules you learned in kindergarten: Play nice. Be dependable. Tell the truth.

If you can’t get to the top by being true to yourself and straight with everyone around you, your success will be hollow—and probably short-lived.

Dreams can come true. These traits, coupled with hard work and perseverance, will keep your dreams from becoming just wishful thinking.

Obituaries Eugene “Gene-O” Anthony Koopmeiners

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Eugene “ G e n e - O ” A n t h o n y Koopmeiners, age 73 of Avon was held Monday July 7, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

Father Jerry Mischke officiated and burial followed in the Arban Cemetery.

Gene passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in St. Louis Park.

Gene was born on August 26, 1940 to Henry and Olivia (Pohlmann) Koopmeiners in Melrose, MN. Gene grew up in the Freeport/Melrose area.

He served in the Army National Guard for 9 years. Gene married Joan Messer on May 29, 1962 in West Union. They lived most of their lives in the Avon/ Albany area. He was employed as a truck driver for most of his life, working for Anderson Trucking. He also owned GeneO’s Place in Albany for 12 years before retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna, the Knights of Columbus

and the American Legion in Holdingford.

Gene enjoyed playing cribbage, cooking Sunday breakfast for his family, and making homemade wine, camping and fishing. Gene enjoyed playing the card game, Skat and had played this game for nearly 40 years. He and his family were proud to have his card group featured in the St. Cloud Times. He also enjoyed polka and square dancing with his wife.

Gene loved spending time with people and making them laugh.

He is survived by his wife, Joan of Avon; children, Doris Eggert (Dean Passe), Albany, Debra (David) Schalke, Chicago, IL; Mark (Michelle) Koopmeiners, Rice; Ginny (Mike) Sauer, Sauk Centre; Joe (Marie) Koopmeiners, Avon and Gayle (Kevin) Feldewerd, New Munich; 17 grandchildren; 2 stepgrandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gilbert (Sally) Koopmeiners, Luxemberg; Art (Lucille) Koopmeiners, St. Cloud; Nellie Hollermann, Albany; Clarence Koopmeiners, St. Augusta; Mary (Gene) Goeser, Munich, ND and Jerome Koopmeiners, Willmar; sister-inlaw, Dorothy Koopmeiners, OH. He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Olivia; sister, Agnes (Joe) Steinemann, brother, Urban Koopmeiners, sister-in-laws, Carol Koopmeiners and Christine Koopmeiners and brother-in-law, Lawrence Hollermann.

Virginia L. Berscheit

Virginia L. Berscheit, age 88 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Virginia Lou Honaker was born August 24, 1925 in Urbana, Iowa to Benjamin and Lola (Devereaux) Honaker. She was united in marriage to Ernest Berscheit on July 16, 1943 in Hastings, Nebraska. Virginia was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked as a teacher’s aide at the Grey Eagle Public School and also worked at the Melrose Telephone Company until

her retirement. Virginia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and enjoyed reading and music. She was devoted to her family, God, and her church and always said that her children were her greatest accomplishment.

Survivors include her children, Margaret “Mickey” Doucette of Burtrum, Lawrence “Larry” (Kathy) Berscheit of Golden Valley, Rita (Ken) Ritter of Sauk Centre, Jerome “Jerry” (Fely) Berscheit of Ramsey, Linda (Mark) Berens of Grey Eagle, Ari (T.J.) Trollen of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Lisa (Dave) Rahn of Melrose, Paul (Lynne) Berscheit of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and Ronald “Ron” Berscheit of Sauk Centre; and son-in-law, Tom Arvig of Melrose; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; brother and sister, Benjamin Honaker of Denver, Colorado and Lola (Jake) Feis of Denver, Colorado.

Virginia was in preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Berscheit on November 12, 1972; parents; daughter, Emily Arvig; son-in-law, Dennis Doucette; grandson, Blaine Arvig; and brothers, William Honaker and Duane Honaker.

Cyril “Alex” Schwalbe

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Cyril “Alex” Schwalbe, 83, of St. Anna, was held Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

Father Greg Mastey officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery. Cyril passed away peacefully in his home late Saturday morning July 5, 2014.

Cyril was born on February 9, 1931 to Paul and Teckla (Halama) Schwalbe in Avon. He grew up with nine siblings on the family farm. After school, Cyril joined the United States Army and served his country proudly. He married Shirley Guck on September 15, 1959 in Rice, MN and together they raised seven children. Cyril was self-employed as a farmer and loved what he did. He was an avid fisherman who loved telling jokes and cruising around checking the fields on his golf cart. Cyril enjoyed playing

cribbage and horseshoes, working in his vegetable garden, and spending time with his grandkids and his dog Mitzy.

He also liked the time he spent with the Legion guys and being a part of a bowling league and the church choir.

Cyril was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Avon American Legion Post #0538, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

He is survived by his wife Shirley; children Janice (Vernon) Breth, Holdingford; Susan (Leo) Eichers, Bowlus; Mark (Angela) Schwalbe, Chaska; Mike (Michele) Schwalbe, Ham Lake; Thomas Schwalbe, South St. Paul; David (Tania) Schwalbe, Alexandria, VA; Steven (Lisa) Schwalbe, Avon; siblings Alfred (Mary) Schwalbe, Avon; Evelyn Kramek, Detroit, MI; Alma Chiaka, St. Cloud; Doris Evans, St. Cloud; James (Carol) Schwalbe, Coon Rapids; sister-in-law Karen Schwalbe, New Brighton; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Teckla and his siblings Joseph Schwalbe, Clara Streit, Irene Jarnot, and Lawrence “Larry” Schwalbe.

-Marie Dear Marie, First and foremost, you two have a responsibility to take care of each other and your own household. It sounds like you’re doing that pretty well. So, if he wants you to take a full-time job only to build more wealth, I think that’s a bad idea.

Wealth is for quality of life, and quality of life includes giving. It also includes a safe and stable future. But if you have to surrender the joy in life to do that — to build extra wealth or build at a different pace — well, to me that’s just wrong. Contentment has nothing to do with how many hours you work or how many zeroes are in your bank account.

Contentment has to do with your state of being. It’s connected to your sense of gratitude, happiness and your priorities.

The idea that contentment is on the same spectrum as ambition? No, it’s not.

I don’t think you should take on a job or a schedule you hate just to pay off your house a couple of years earlier. I wouldn’t do that, and I don’t recommend you do it either. People should do something with their lives they find enjoyable and they’re called to do. Now, if your kids are going hungry and your bills aren’t getting paid, then you do whatever it takes. But in this case, Marie, you’re happy and you guys are in a great place. I’m sure your

-Alaina Dear Alaina, That’s fine if it’s free. However, I wouldn’t rely on it as an integral part of my overall financial plan.

In most cases, accidental death and dismemberment policies are just a gimmick. You’re not double dead if you die by accident, and your spouse or family doesn’t need the money if you die by accident rather than a heart attack.

They need the same coverage and the same protection regardless. When it comes to life insurance, I recommend a good level term policy that’s 10 to 12 times your annual income. That means if you make $50,000 a year, you need $500,000 to $600,000 in coverage.

Still, if it’s really free I’ve got no problem with the policy. Just make sure you’re not paying some other big fee to join a club so you can get “free” stuff.

When that happens, it’s not really free after all!

‘Minnesota 13’ Documentary Filming in Stearns County Local Prohibition history is making the transition from book to film, as documentary filming takes place in various county locations this summer. “Minnesota 13: From Grain to Glass” follows the colorful moonshine-making history of Stearns County, as Depression-devastated farmers turned to making illegal alcohol. The alcohol evolved into a branded product, nationally distributed, with a premium reputation. The film explores Elaine Davis’s book ‘Minnesota 13-Wet Wild Prohibition Days,” the history of an elite whiskey produced in the heart of Minnesota during Prohibition years and beyond. The documentary also follows the modern-day attempts of organic farmers growing Minnesota 13 heritage corn seed and a St. Paul micro-distiller resuscitating the brand as premium whiskey. The film will intertwine and interpret the stories, the lore, ethnicity, religion, local and national law enforcement, geography, farm economics, regional history and insights into why Stearns County didn’t become the ‘Jack Daniels” producing area of the USA after Prohibition ended.

Documentarians Norah Shapiro and Kelly Nathe are co-directing/coproducing the film. Norah Shapiro is a

Minneapolis-based independent documentary filmmaker (formerly a public defender) and owner of Flying Pieces Productions. Los Angeles-based Kelly Nathe is closely connected to the story, with family and childhood ties to Holdingford and Little Birch Lake in western Stearns County, where significant moonshining took place and Al Capone visited. Filming is ongoing at 11 Wells Distillery in the refurbished Hamms Brewery in St. Paul, the Stearns History Museum and Research Center, Baker’s Acres in Avon, the Stearns County jail, the city of Holdingford and other local community sites. The documentary has been partially funded with Arts and Cultural Heritage Funds from Minnesota’s Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.

Abomi~Nation -By Sheila Ripplinger Remember the Abominable Snowman? According to the legend, they were huge, hairy disgusting creatures that lived in the Himalayan Mountains.

In our parts of the country, we are on the lookout for Bigfoot! Or, we may call the creature we are looking for a Sasquatch. I have personally met some true ‘Bigfoot Believers’. There seems to be a blood-rushing thrill in talking about these creatures that seem to be able to hide themselves quite well!

Whether fact or fictional, we may never truly know if they indeed exist.

What we do know however, is that the Bible is fact, and it has explicit graphic descriptions of creatures that really do exist and will be there to torment those who choose to deny the Lord. The horrific Hollywood movies that people are crowding in to see, are coming very close to the creatures/beasts, that are described in God’s own Word!

These movies, which I do not recommend watching, are giving people thrills and shrills. But, if they only knew about the descriptives in the Bible, and what the biblical creatures and beasts are going to do in the future for real, they would be shaking in their boots!

God in His great Mercy gave us these warnings to save us from torment, not to scare us for a little while like the intentions of the scary movie’s, but to put the Fear of the Lord in us. The fear that causes us to respect and worship a Holy and Just God who created us and loves us. The secular world teaches lies and is working in accordance with the

enemy of our souls. We need to choose who we will listen to and who we will bow down to. We cannot serve the world and the Lord at the same time with the same heart.

The word ‘Abomination’ is found many times throughout the Old and New Testaments. The word itself means, ‘anything that arouses a strong disgust or loathing, hate, wickedness, or evil.’

In Scripture, the word means exactly the same.

The Bible says that there will one day be a man of lawlessness, that with flattery will corrupt those who have violated God’s Covenant. But... The people who truly know their God will see through his lies and firmly resist him.

What is his name? The ‘Abomination’ that causes desolation. Wow. Are we ready for him? We in the United States of America are still able to experience true Freedom. How long will this last if we continue to welcome ‘Abominable’ law changes that will ultimately end in destruction? God uses the word to express His abhorrence for repulsive evil. If we truly know our God through Jesus Christ, we should be seeing things the way He sees them and quit trying to compromise with the world!

Be a ‘Bigfoot Believer’ if you choose, but more importantly believe in the Lord and His Word!

Alert driving improves safety for all road users The tragic death last week of a mother bicycling with her two young children in Rock County is a horrifying reminder that distracted driving is a growing problem in this state. According to the criminal complaint, the driver admitted to taking his eyes off the road to check his cell phone when he hit the bicycle and bike stroller.

Driver inattention is a leading contributing factor in fatal crashes. Cell phones and other electronic devices are commonplace in our lives today. But using them while we are driving is unsafe, irresponsible and can be deadly.

The Department of Public Safety reports one in four crashes is related to distracted driving, although such crashes are likely under-reported. Distracted driving was a contributing factor in 175 fatal crashes, resulting in 191 deaths from 2011 to 2013 in Minnesota. More than half of those crashes occurred in rural areas. Those fatalities cost Minnesota more than $269 million.

In Minnesota, it’s illegal to text while driving and to access the web while in motion or part of traffic, including at a stop light or stop sign. It’s also illegal for drivers under the age of 18 to use a cell phone while driving. Citations for these offenses increased from 388 in 2008 to 2,189 in 2013. That’s an alarming trend that must be reversed.

If you text while driving, on average you take your eyes off the road for up to 4.6 seconds out of every six seconds. That’s like traveling the length of a football field at 55 mph without looking up, according to DPS. Using a cell phone while driving, whether hands-free or hand-held, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having an alcohol-concentration level of .08 percent.

Safety campaigns by DPS and the Minnesota Department of Transportation remind drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians that we all have the same rights and responsibilities and that we all need to “share the road.”

DPS, MnDOT and the Department of Health lead Minnesota’s Toward Zero Deaths program to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and deaths. Its mission is to create a culture for which traffic fatalities of all kinds are unacceptable. Distracted driving is unacceptable.

The popularity of mobile devices and services, and the dangerous, and deadly, consequences of their use while driving, require each of us to make some personal decisions, whether we are driving, bicycling or even walking. Our personal decisions can save lives. It’s time for us to take that next step.

We should turn off cell phones or place them out of reach to avoid the urge to answer. We should pledge to never text and drive. We should plan our trips in advance to avoid fiddling with a GPS device or application while driving. We should pull over to a safe location if we must look at a map. We should designate a passenger to help with directions or when using devices such as a GPS. We should speak up if we’re a passenger to stop drivers from distracted driving behavior.

Distracted driving goes beyond just mobile devices. Anytime we take our eyes off the road, hands off the wheel and our minds off our driving, we’re putting lives at risk. Children should be taught the importance of good behavior in a vehicle.

Drivers who have to tend to children are distracted drivers. So are drivers who are eating, drinking or grooming.

Let’s all heed the lessons that too many Minnesotans learn the hard way.

Let’s pay more attention to our driving, biking and walking.

Al Doty Endorsed for House District 9B

Delegates from Morrison, Todd, Cass, and Wadena Counties met in Browerville recently to endorse DFL candidates for election from State Senate District 9.

Former State Representative Al Doty was endorsed as the DFL candidate for State Representative in District 9B. Be-

fore his legislative career, Doty served as a Senior Advocate and a teacher/coach at Pierz High School. Most recently he worked as a member of Congressman Rick Nolan’s staff. He lives in Royalton with his wife Donna.

Nominating Doty were Cathy Adamek and Bob Keeton. “There is not a more qualified individual out there. We know experience counts and Al definitely has the experience we need in St. Paul,” said Adamek.

In his acceptance speech, Doty talked about moving rural Minnesota forward; forward in education, in jobs, in health care, and in quality of life. Doty went on to say that Minnesota’s economy is slowly returning to pre-recession levels thanks to a DFL-led legislature. “The previous two years of Republican cuts, a 21-day shutdown, borrowing from schools, and increased property taxes were bad years for rural Minnesota,” said Doty, “Under this last session, property taxes will decrease, our schools were paid back, allday kindergarten was funded and rural broadband received support. The DFL direction is the right direction.”

Court ruling in Illinois could have big impact

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling last week that could have a major impact on the child care unionization law signed last year by Governor Dayton. The court ruled on a case that came from Illinois, pertaining to personal care attendants, but the decision is expected to have a bearing on the Minnesota law that allows for child care providers who have clients that accept the state subsidy for child care known as CCAP to join a union.

The Illinois case, titled “Harris vs.

Quinn,” concerned a group of healthcare personal assistants who opposed the state’s attempt to force them into a union or to pay what’s known as “fair share” fees if they chose not to join the union. (In Minnesota, those fair share fees can range up to 85 percent of the cost of regular union dues.) The Supreme Court ruled that those employees were not actually public employees, and that they cannot be forced to pay fair share fees if they don’t join a union.

pact Minnesota’s law and give those child care providers not joining a union the legal right to refuse to pay the fair share fees.

It’s important to remember that this doesn’t end the attempt to form a public employee union of private child care providers in Minnesota. A separate lawsuit will determine whether AFSCME can continue its effort to organize those providers whose clients include CCAP families into their union. That case and the unionization effort enacted last year had been put on hold pending the Supreme Court ruling in the Illinois case.

When this legislation was passed in Minnesota last year, it made no sense to me because very few people affected by the law were in favor of it. Of the many providers I visited with, only one wanted to see the bill passed. After literally hours and hours of debate in both chambers of the DFL-controlled Legislature, it finally was approved in the final days of session. And almost immediately, legal challenges were initiated by those providers who were opposed to it. They view the Supreme Court ruling as a victory in their fight to keep the union out of their business.

What made the event unique was a bus load of farmers and ranchers from Alabama in attendance. The 40 or so visitors were on a state-wide tour here in Minnesota to learn first-hand about agriculture in our state. And, aside from the obvious differences in the weather between our two states and the different crops grown in each, they deal with some of the same issues as we do. High input costs, variability in the weather and burdensome regulations were some of the things we have in common with each other. One visitor remarked

how refreshing our weather was, with a cool breeze blowing that particular evening. Back home, he said, it was 95 degrees that day with high humidity.

It was interesting to hear how they raise cotton and peanuts, along with corn and soybeans, and we were invited to try their Alabama butter beans if we ever got the chance. Likewise, I returned the invitation for them to enjoy lutefisk at their earliest opportunity.

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City June 3, 2014 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Tim Grittner, and Jim Molitor. Absent: AJ Johnson, Jay Bartkowicz. Also present: Sheila Funk & Ben Grams, Joe Maciej, Duane Johnson, Mike Rude, Lonny Hutchins and reporter Kerry Drager.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, May 6, 2014 were read. A motion was made by Tim Grittner to approve the minutes as read. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mike Rude, City Engineer, presented council with a withholding calculation paper from the 2013 Water System Improvements for Larson Excavating. Jim Molitor presented pictures of problem spots on city streets during the last heavy rain in Swanville.

Council stated they had many concerns from residents with property on the water project route. After much discussion, Mayor Peterson made a motion to hold all the retain age money from Larson Excavating until the withholding list is completed and inspection is done. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

City maintenance, Lonny Hutchins, reported that the water line/curb stop to the city bathrooms by the horseshoe pits is in need of some work. Maciej Construction will be working on the problem. Tri-City Paving will be working on the pot holes and patch spots made by the gas company. It was brought to the Mayors attention with heavy rains the property on 204 Berkey Avenue has water problems. After discussion it was decided to table.

The Mayor presented to the council two bids to repair

the culvert on Springbrook Drive. It was decided to table at this time.

A land use permit was presented for Alan Loxterkamp to build a 32’x 45’garage. P & Z committee stated all the requirements have been met and the fee has been paid.

Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit with the exception that the side walls are to be 12’ tall. Mayor Peterson seconded the motion.

All members present voted in favor, motion carried.

Sheila Funk from Morrison Co Public Health and Ben Grams from Live Better Live Longer organization, were present to promote a better health event happening in Little Falls on June 15.

Hopefully this event will trigger other cities to do the same.

They will help cities organize such events around Morrison County.

Duane Johnson, representing the Swanville Lions, was present to ask council to consider a temporary strong liquor license for the three day Swanville Mid Summer Carnival. The clerk has discussed this issue with the MN Alcohol Enforcement Division and if the council approves the license, the clerk will fill out a form and send it in to the state and then the state has to approve the license. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to allow the Swanville Lions Club a three day temporary strong liquor license for July 11, 12 and 13, 2014 for a fee of $80.00. Learning doesn’t end with gratuation -By Dr. John C. Maxwell At this time of year, students everywhere get to stop learning for the summer. Most of us grew up with that mindset: The months of September to June were for learning, and the summer months were not. And we looked forward to the time after graduation, when we would never have to learn again!

But is that really true? Graduation ceremonies, after all, are formally called “commencement.” And commencement means beginning. I believe that’s accurate. When we graduate, we need to look at it as a beginning. After formal education ends, we begin an education in life. What we do with the learning opportunities that we encounter will determine our success and progress for years to come. We need to be lifelong learners.

Over the years, I’ve concluded that lifelong learning doesn’t just happen.

We can’t just “expect” to learn. We need to “intend” to. That means taking action.

If you haven’t come up with a plan for learning and personal growth, now is the time.

Here are some practical tips to keep learning for a lifetime: 1. Take responsibility for learning.

When you were in school, your instructors provided the curriculum.

The grades that they gave provided motivation. (And your parents probably offered some motivation of their own!)

But as adults, we need to be responsible for our own learning. For me, that meant creating my own plan for personal growth, and taking steps to implement it.

Bruce Springsteen said, “A time comes when you need to stop waiting for the man you want to become and start being the man you want to be.”

What are you waiting for? No one else is going to make you learn. Embracing responsibility is the first step.

2. Prepare to be wrong a lot.

In my first job after college, I thought I needed to know all the answers. If I didn’t know an answer, I pretended I did.

And I didn’t like to be wrong. I believe a lot of us want to be perfect right out of the gate. But you can’t learn until you

admit that you need to. I soon discovered that I wasn’t going to grow with a know-it-all attitude.

We all need to allow ourselves to be beginners and make mistakes.

That’s how everyone learns.

3. Set aside time to learn.

A little bit of learning happens in every life. But without intention, it mostly happens by accident. If you’ve taken responsibility for your own learning, you need to go after it with a commitment of time and effort. For most of my life, I’ve set aside a time and a place for thinking and reflection. During that time, I would consciously ask myself what I could learn from the experiences of the day. I would write those lessons down, along with plans to practice and grow in those areas. Schedule learning into your calendar. Then spend that time wisely.

That leads to the next tip…

4. Evaluate your experiences.

You’ve probably heard of “learning from experience.” But I think that experience alone isn’t enough. Just going through something doesn’t necessarily teach us what we need to know. We need to examine what happened, what might have gone wrong, and what we could do differently. That kind of reflective thinking turns experience into insight.

Then the next time you have a similar experience, you go into it with a different set of skills. You will have grown.

Is that medical test really needed?

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God!” Do they really? When the writer looks into the heavens does he really believe that He can see God? Does he see an outline of God in a constellation? Are there stars shining somewhere that actually point to God’s eternal residence?

No. This Psalm, more than any other, reflects the beauty, splendor and handiwork of God. He is speaking of the revelation of God in the world of nature.

His belief in God as Creator is not an argument against the theory of evolution or the problems of science and the Bible. For him, Creation reveals the Lord’s royal majesty, sovereignty, power and design. He simply declares God’s existence and presence and wants to praise Him in worship and wonder.

We see God’s glory each morning when we are awakened by a majestic sunrise that erupts from the darkness of the night. We see His handiwork each time we look into the face of a rose, watch a bird in flight or see the crashing of waves. All of creation clearly and convincingly announces the greatness and glory of God. This Psalm reveals a God who communicates to us through the majesty of His creation. The fact that He speaks openly to us through the work of His hands is a gracious expression of His love and His desire for us to know and worship Him. Although sin has attempted to hide His glory it is still with us and cannot be denied!

‘Blasting’ away aquatic plants may not be legal Products that create water currents to push away plants and debris from docks and shoreline should not be used to move sediment or excavate the bottom of a lake or river, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

“Some companies have advertised that their products can ‘blast away’ mucky lake bottom without a permit,” said Steve Enger, DNR aquatic plant management supervisor. “Property owners need to be aware that use of these and similar products could expose them to a citation.”

Products can resemble a fan or trolling motor contained in a short tube, and operate by creating strong currents of moving water. They are not always illegal, but consumers should use caution when considering any kind of aquatic plant removal. If the product is moving sediment, the man-

ner of operation is likely not allowed.

“When directed at a lake bottom these products can uproot aquatic plants and cause plumes or clouds of disturbed sediment to drift down the shoreline, interfering with other people’s enjoyment of the lake and possibly covering spawning areas with a layer of sediment,” said Enger.

Aquatic plants are important to lakes.

They help maintain water clarity, prevent erosion, stabilize the bottom sediments and provide habitat for fish and wildlife.

While it is possible to legally remove some aquatic plants, oftentimes permits are required. For permit and other information on the DNR’s aquatic plant management program, visit www.mndnr.gov/apm.

Red devil plunged his sharp spear into a deep pit of itch.

-With deliberate manner- Dark eyes, a smirk and a twitch.

He retrieved it dripping wet, proceeding with perfect aim.

To smear loaded crude oil- bitten skin not be the same.

Suds ensured it’s departure, Or so my feeble mind thought.

Scratching got to be furious, Despite cool creams that I bought.

Beady blisters appeared in places I won’t mention.

Devil has a frame of mind to get my full attention!

To ease the situation I’m swallowing some round yuk.

Avoid the spots devil lurks... Luck, you could get stuck, with this muck!
