Turn adversity into advantage -By Harvey Mackay The village blacksmith pumped the bellows to prepare his furnace fire and placed a piece of iron into the intense heat until it reached an almost transparent state.

He then removed the now pliable iron and pounded it with a heavy hammer, transforming it into a horseshoe by repeating the process. When the final shape is achieved, the hot iron is plunged into water. The drastic temperature change tempered the iron to give it durability and strength.

Author Glenn Van Ekeren offers this story to show how the human spirit is similarly formed and strengthened through the adversities of life. Consider these phenomenal achievements of people experiencing adversity.

Walt Disney said: “All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”

Beethoven composed his greatest works after becoming deaf. Sir Walter Raleigh wrote the “History of the World” during a 13-year imprisonment. Abraham Lincoln achieved greatness by his display of wisdom and character during the devastation of the Civil War. Under a sentence of death and during 20 years in exile, Dante wrote the “Divine Comedy.” John Bunyan wrote “Pilgrim’s Progress” in a Bedford jail.

Simon Cowell had a record company fail. Steven Spielberg was rejected from the University of Southern California Film School twice. J.K. Rowling’s world-famous Harry Potter novels were rejected by several publishers while she also was going through a divorce and raising her daughter alone.

Sylvester Stallone suffered complications at birth that severed a nerve and caused paralysis in part of his face, which caused his slightly slurred speech.

Consider Mary Groda-Lewis, who endured 16 years of illiteracy because of unrecognized dyslexia, was committed to a reformatory on two different occasions, and almost died of a stroke while bearing a child.

Committed to going to college, she worked at a variety of jobs, saved money, graduated with her high school equivalency at age 18, was named Oregon’s outstanding Upward Bound student and finally entered college.

In her determination to become a doctor, she faced 15 medical school rejections until Albany Medical College finally accepted her.

In 1984, Dr. Mary Groda-Lewis, at age 35, graduated with honors to fulfill her dream.

Overcoming adversity presents tremendous opportunity to demonstrate what you can accomplish if you are committed to achieving a goal. Because I’ve shared my experiences with confronting business setbacks, I’m often asked for advice from people who are considering throwing in the towel on their ambitions.

I listen to their situations, and almost every time, I tell them the same thing: You can’t give up so easily. Whether your plan requires some tweaks or a major overhaul, if you can hang in there, you can get there. Hard work and nerves of steel are honed just like the work of a master blacksmith.

As one of my favorite authors, Napoleon Hill, said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”

Be thankful for adversity. No person is more unhappy than the one who has never experienced adversity. It’s often said that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That’s perhaps an exaggeration, but I’m grateful I didn’t give in to any negative thoughts that would have surely brought my business down.

Adversity is the grindstone of life.

Intended to polish you up, adversity also has the ability to grind you down. The impact and

ultimate result depend on how you respond to the difficulties that come your way.

Consider the doomsday businessman who had a reason every single month as to why business was bad. His list of peopleproblems and business adversity is a comical reminder of our tendency to find excuses for our lack of success.

January: People spent all their cash for the holidays.

February: All the best customers have gone south.

March: Unseasonably cold and too rainy.

April: Everybody is preoccupied with income taxes.

May: Too much rain; farmers distressed.

June: Too little rain; farmers distressed.

July: Heat has everyone down.

August: Everybody is away on vacation.

September: Everybody is back but broke.

October: Customers are waiting to see how fall clearance sales turn out.

November: People are upset over election results.

December: Customers need money for the holidays.

Mackay’s Moral: Never let a stumble be the end of your journey.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne A Wilt

When we think about old memories, frequently those recollections include a special memory about a food item. For me, these special tasting memories include my Grandma’s coffee kuchen, Pa’s summer sausage and my other Grandma’s Huck Fet. These items have gone to just memories due to the work involved in making them and in some cases today’s health standards consider them unsafe. At the time, we enjoyed them and since nobody was dying from them, they were considered safe to eat. When looking back, I think that most of the senior citizens can recall good tasting foods that nobody makes anymore. In many cases there wasn’t an actual written recipe and today’s cooks frequently need it to be in writing or they are not comfortable making it.

Some years ago I was in business with a fellow that had ancestors from Holland. He spoke several times about eating dandelion

greens. That was something I had not experienced. He also mentioned how lambs quarter weeds were good when cooked and in green salads. So I tried them and found that dandelion greens taste similar to lettuce and lambs quarter weed leaves taste better than spinach. At home we didn’t eat either dandelion or lambs quarter. Both of these items are easily found around your yard. Be sure you haven’t sprayed them with 2, 4-D. If you garden there is a good possibility that you planted garden lettuce. The lettuce this year, due to the heat and lack of rain, has not looked good. One of these days it will rain and the lettuce will flourish and you’ll be wondering how to use the abundance. You’ve already done the recipe with mayo and salad dressing, but now what.

My Hollander friend introduced us to a wilt. The result of a wilt is to make lettuce wilt for a really tasty main dish. Preparation requires a fair sized covered pot, probably the one you cook soup in and a frying pan. You then need to get a couple of pounds of cheap bacon, (sort-of fatty), a half dozen eggs, an onion, some pepper and vinegar and about 2/3 of the pot with lettuce somewhat cut up. Now you are ready.

Put the lettuce in the pot. Fry the bacon.

Pour the fried bacon and most of the grease into the lettuce pot along with a couple of shakes of

vinegar and put on the cover. Put the frying pan back on the heat and add the chopped up onion.

When the onion becomes browned, dump it in the lettuce pot and replace the cover. Put the scrambled egg mixture in the frying pan, shake a little pepper on the eggs and when they are done, stir them to break up the large pieces and put them in the lettuce pot. Shake the pot to get everything mixed and eat. If you get a sudden urge to wear wooden shoes, you may have eaten too much. It’s like making a good soup, if you put everything that tastes good together, the soup will be good.

Today however, you have a million things to do and not time for health problems. You dial the number for the doctor’s office, at the same time the doorbell rings and you heard a crash coming from the kid’s room. The person on the phone says, “How may I direct your call?” The problem is you have no idea who you called, or maybe they called you? Now what? This sort of thing has happened to me on several occasions.

So many times, we go through life and leave God out of the picture. When we pray, we fall asleep, or our mind wonders to what your boss wanted to talk to you about later this afternoon. At the moment we are under stress in just about every area of life, but you have

not even thought about bringing God into the picture. Isaiah 41: 9-10 says that God has gone to great lengths to rescue us, please let Him. “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. 10So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

James B. “Jim” Schirmers

James B. “Jim” Schirmers, age 58 of Albany, passed away after a short battle with brain cancer on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at his farm in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, June 26 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating.

Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

James A. “Jim” Frieler, age 71 of New Munich, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021, at his home in New Munich, Minnesota after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease followed by a stroke.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating and Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg assisting.

Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Thursday morning at the church.

James Alphonse Frieler was born August 30, 1949, in Melrose, Minnesota to John and Leona (Schulzetenberg) Frieler. He graduated

with his brother Dennis which was a century farm. He was employed at SpartanNash in St. Cloud for 32 years as a shipping supervisor, transportation, and an over road truck driver.

He loved the people he worked with at SpartanNash and truck driving. Jim was a very kindhearted person to anyone that was in need.

He enjoyed spending time with his nephew and niece, his dogs, cattle, and doing farm work.

Jim is survived by his siblings, Lori (John) Heinen of St. Joseph, Dennis of Albany, Greg of Avon, and Lisa (Mike) Verkinnes of St. Cloud; nephew, Jake Verkinnes; and niece, Brooke Verkinnes.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents.

Serving as casket bearers were Mark Gangl, Tim Rieland, Chad Cruzen, Chad Westering, Paul Boeckermann, and Dave Geise. Reader was Ann Chaika. Gift bearers were Jake Verkinnes, Brooke Verkinnes, and Aaliyah Mixteco.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose. from Melrose High School and served in the National Guard for six years. Jim worked at Kraft Foods in Melrose and at the Turkey Farm near New Munich. He farmed in partnership with his brother, Tom until retiring in 2017. Jim was a hard worker and would help anyone who needed help. He enjoyed hunting everything and anything, playing cards, going to the casino, and spending time with his family and friends.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, Knights of Columbus Council #1633, and St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survivors include his siblings, Rodney (Darlene) Frieler of St. Cloud, Steve (Jane) Frieler of Paynesville, Rosie (Larry) Van Beck of Melrose, Ruth (Stan) Heinen of Spring Hill, and Tom (Linda) Frieler of New Munich; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Leona Frieler; and twin infant sisters.

Memorials are preferred.

State University and obtained his MA degree in Educational Administration. Fran was principal at Melrose High School for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Melrose Lions Club.

Fran enjoyed traveling, reading, and fishing.

Fran treasured the natural beauty found on his farm and sharing it with his family.

Survivors include his children, Michael (Cyndy) Hertzog of Bozeman, Montana, Barbara (George) McClure of Grey Eagle, and Elizabeth Hertzog (Dave) of Fargo, North Dakota; five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Fran was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hertzog on December 20, 2009; parents; daughter, Therese Hertzog; and brother, Mel Hertzog.

Memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or St. Mary’s School in Melrose.

Survivors include her daughters, Gwen (Dennis) Davidson of Byron and Tammy Waldvogel of Melrose; five grandchildren, Andy Wendt, Liz Davidson, Kate Davidson, Mitchell Waldvogel, and Derek Waldvogel; sisters-in-law, Pauline (James) Eubanks of Greenwood, South Carolina, Joan (Howard) Henry of Blaine, and Kathy (Dave) Lehman of Superior, Wisconsin; special friend, Pat Beste of Little River, South Carolina; and many loving relatives and friends.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Imdieke on May 23, 2018; parents; two brothers, Jerry and Richard Westermeyer; in-laws, Herman and Wilma Imdieke, Dick Imdieke, David Imdieke, and Esther Westermeyer.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the May Senior High student of the month, junior Tyra Powell. Tyra is the daughter of Steph and Russ Powell.

Tyra has many interests including painting, gardening, working, shopping and spending time with her friends.

She plans to attend Saint Cloud Technical and Community College to become an ultra-sound technician. Tyra stays busy with many school activities. She has participated in basketball for two years, and also served as the Girls’ Basketball Manager for three years. She participated in softball for four years and has played volleyball for six years. She serves on student council. She also has been in band for seven years and recently was a member of the Junior Prom Committee.

Her achievements include consistently being on the A Honor Roll, the President’s List at St. Cloud Technical both fall and spring semesters, and the Bulldog Award in Volleyball during her sophomore year. Her favorite thing about school has been spending time with her classmates. She advises other students “Having good grades is fine, but don’t forget to take of yourself and be a teenager.”

Science Instructor Jason Lee says, “Tyra is an extremely dedicated and hardworking student at Swanville High School. Whether it is taking college classes or putting together events for the school, Tyra puts in the time and effort to succeed. She is always looking to take the initiative instead of waiting around for something to happen. Whatever goals Tyra decides to pursue after high school, she will be successful. Burglary: June 16, 2021: Deputy Steve Romstad responded to a burglary complaint at The Landing located on Pelican Lake in Avon Township. The owner had arrived at the business to find a glass door had been broken and access was gained to the business. The closing employee had left the bar the night before around 11:00 p.m. and locked up.

When the owner arrived the following morning and found the broken door, he also found that the previous day’s till receipts had been opened and gone through as well. The items taken were three money bags that contained approximately $6,400 in cash. The Landing is equipped with a video surveillance system and are working to retrieve and view the video from the system’s hard drive. If anyone has any information on this burglary or may have heard something please call our office at 320259-3702 and ask for an investigator.

Burglary: June 23, 2021: Deputy Zach Milne took a burglary complaint at Harvest Church in Freeport. Sometime since the previous Saturday someone had broken into a shed on the property and stole several items.

If I don’t talk to them about their performance because I don’t want to be seen as judgmental, I’m not doing my job. I owe them the feedback necessary for them to become a good team member. Otherwise, they could just get fired one day without really knowing what happened because I refused to “judge” them.

a big difference between judging people and being judgmental. But it’s unkind not to share insights or suggestions for a better way of life with those you love most. Holding back and telling yourself the way someone behaves is just the way they’re made is wrong in most instances. Overspending and not saving money aren’t character traits—they’re decisions.

They’re adults now, and they’re going to do what they want. They don’t have to understand or support your ways of handling money, but you and your husband have every right to tell them they have to start behaving in certain ways if they expect to receive your money when the time comes. If they’re misbehaving, and you give them money, you’re funding that bad behavior. That’s not love, that’s enabling.

And a big pile of money isn’t going to heal the bad things—it’s only going to magnify them.

Sit down with your kids, and have a loving, clear discussion about the situation.

Remind them that they’re adults, and you and your husband are no longer able to tell them how they have to live. But let them know in no uncertain terms, gently but firmly, they will not receive your money if they continue to behave in ways you both consider foolish or unreasonable. Let them know they’ll always have your love, just not your money, unless they begin behaving more intelligently and maturely with their finances.

You can’t make them do anything, Danielle. But you can ensure they understand you two won’t be sharing your wealth with people who can’t handle it and use it wisely.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2004 GMC Yukon and I’m having a 4x4 problem. The system will work one time then not the next. When I take it to the shop it seems to be the time that it is working correctly. The problem it has is when I switch to 4x4 high the light just blinks then is stays in the 2wd position. Sometimes when I switch to low 4x4 then back to high it will work just fine until I put it back in the 2wd position.

- Jack in Charleston, West Virginia Dear Jack, Problems with systems that seem to always work when you have it in the shop are as big a pain for the mechanics as it is for you as the driver. The systems have computers that can often give codes which can help with the diagnostics, but they don’t always indicate the exact cause and without the system actually failed at the moment it’s being inspected makes it hard to diagnose and confirm repairs.

The most often found issue we see when a 4x4 system in a GM truck of your model year fails like this is a failed shift motor or shift module.

Both parts can be expensive so if you can get it to happen while at a shop so they can give a 100% accurate diagnosis it will go a long way to helping you save money and get it repaired right on the first visit.

- Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I’m a long time Under the Hood listener and I want to thank you for the great advice you guys give. I have a problem with my headlights. I drive a 2007 Chevy Impala and when I’m driving my headlights sometimes just shut off by themselves. If I pull the headlight switch out they stay off but switching to the high beams does work but only for about two minutes then they start to blink and fail too. I tried a switch that I installed myself and It did not help.

- Steven in Lindsay, Oklahoma Dear Steven, We have experienced headlight failure ourselves and it can be a scary thing. At least you have the high beams so you can get off the road safely. This is actually becoming a common issue on this body style car. The headlight switches do fail quite often and your

replacing the switch may have been needed as well as the further repairs needed now. The switch connector needs to be checked during the installation of the switch. The pins in the connector tend to become burnt and fail due to high resistance and heat build-up. Make sure the pins are clean and in good shape and are not loose and replace any that are questionable. The pins can be found at a GM dealership parts department and the tool to install them at most auto parts stores. Also check your headlight socket connections.

Buying and Selling in a Hot Housing Market

By Dave Ramsey The housing market is white hot right now! Home prices are way up over last year, and 50% of homes are selling for more than the asking price—$20,000, $50,000, even $100,000 more in some cases.[1] That’s causing buyers everywhere to do some insane things to get the houses they want. More than half made an offer last year without seeing the house in person.

[2] Many are even willing to skip a home inspection if it will get their offer accepted.

In case you’re wondering, both are really bad ideas.

There’s nothing mysterious about a hot housing market. It’s what happens when you have more buyers than homes to buy. Demand is high, but the supply is low, and that drives up prices.

I’ve heard a lot of people say we’re actually in a housing bubble. That’s when demand causes home prices to jump so high, so fast, that buyers can’t keep up. Homes stop selling, flooding the market and causing prices to drop like a rock. But I don’t think that’s what’s going on.

We have a housing shortage, fueled by a shortage in building supplies— another thing to thank COVID-19 for. With fewer new homes to choose from, buyers are looking at used homes, but not many people are selling right now. Plus, a lot of the buyers are moving to areas with a much lower cost of living, so they have the cash to make these wild offers on the homes that are available. That’s the perfect combination for the feeding frenzy we’re seeing now.

And even though I think the frenzy will slow and prices will stabilize, I don’t think home prices will drop significantly any time soon.

What Does A Hot Housing Market Mean for Sellers?

This is great news for sellers! With more motivated buyers than sellers, competition is fierce, and sellers have the advantage. You can sit back, let the offers roll in, and pick the best one.

But you shouldn’t make the leap to sell until you’re sure you’re financially and emotionally ready. If you are, the next step is to find a reputable agent and talk over your situation: Are you selling and buying? Sell your home before you buy. You’ll likely

be able to sell your home before you find a new one, but you never want risk being stuck paying two mortgages.

Use your advantage in your favor. In a hot housing market, buyers will be more likely to accept your terms.

Take advantage of it!

A multiple-offer game plan is a must. Get on the same page with your agent on price, types of financing, and contingencies you’ll accept so it’s easy to pick the best offer.

Higher price point homes aren’t moving quite as fast. Houses valued at $500,000 and up may take a little longer to sell, so don’t get discouraged if it takes a few more showings to get offers.

What Does a Hot Housing Market Mean for Buyers?

It may be a seller’s market right now. But buyers aren’t completely out of luck. One thing’s for sure: Buyers need a seasoned real estate pro on their side. Between crazy offers and fewer homes to choose from, this is no time for amateur hour.

Here’s some advice for winning in a seller’s market: Stick to your budget.

Don’t let emotion or a time crunch cause you to make bad money decisions. House fever causes 20% of firsttime home buyers to go over budget.[3] This is a bad idea.

Know what it takes to have a competitive offer. If you’re buying with a mortgage, get preapproved—not just prequalified—for a conventional loan. I always recommend a 15-year, fixedrate loan, where the monthly payments are no more than 25% of your take-home pay.

Make a cash offer if you can. Cash is king, and it’ll set you apart from other buyers in a good way!

Know when to walk away. Before you blow your budget or settle for a home you don’t really want, stop and let things cool off a bit.

Waiting a few months may feel like an eternity, but it can be just enough time to let a hot housing market settle down.

Be prepared for a longer search. This is especially true if you’re a first-time home buyer.

Most real estate pros agree this seller’s market is here to stay for a while.
