2020 resolution: Commit to lifelong learning -By Harvey Mackay “You learn something new every day,” or so the saying goes.

But how many of us actually do?

That phrase usually is uttered when someone learns a lesson by accident.

That’s an okay way to improve your knowledge base, but not very reliable in terms of being able to really learn a new skill or set of facts. You’re at the mercy of circumstances.

I have always preached the virtues of lifelong learning, and I mean intentional learning. If I want to learn a new language, new software or a new hobby, or improve my golf swing or my knowledge of a country I’d like to visit, I forge ahead with purpose. I want to know more. I work at getting the best information available and put it into practice. That is intentional learning.

Living in the information age makes lifelong learning easier than ever.

Online classes, TEDtalks, YouTube instructional videos – you name it, the opportunities to soak up knowledge

are unlimited on your own schedule anywhere you have Wi-Fi. You can quite literally learn something new every day. And then what do you do with it?

I recently came across a wonderful book that takes it a step further, teaching how to read faster, remember more and become a “superlearner.”

Author Jonathan Levi shares some useful methods in “The Only Skill That Matters.”

Levi explains, “Whereas it used to be only doctors and programmers who struggled to keep up with the pace of their field, today it’s almost everybody.

Professionals in every industry who want to take their career to the next level are struggling to keep up with the work they already have – much less make time for ‘leisure’ learning like foreign languages, musical instruments, new skills, or pleasure reading.”

He quotes Alvin Toffler, author of “Future Shock,” who said “The illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

That’s a lot to absorb. For those who have practiced a skill for so long and need to retool, the challenges are considerable. But they are not

insurmountable if you reprogram your brain to learn a new system.

As Levi puts it, “As a twenty-first century human you need to know how to navigate social relationships, get along with technology, stay informed about politics, obey laws, balance your finances, make smart career decisions, choose a healthy diet, and about a million other little skills that help you thrive in today’s world.”

Take those components one at a time and consider how many changes you have witnessed – had to unlearn/relearn – in a decade. That’s a tremendous amount of information to process.

Levi recommends you first answer a series of questions to help you plan before you dive into any learning project, because he cautions that learning something the wrong way can have permanent consequences. Among those nine questions are: • Why am I learning this information, and how and when will I actually use it?

• What level of understanding do I need?

• How can the information be broken down into small parts, and then recombined into broader categories?

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne My Back Aches I wonder what satanic organization in our past instilled the need and desire to move things from one location to another.

That organization must also have invented scoop shovels. In more modern times there was a great improvement in scoop shovels, they changed from heavier metal to lighter aluminum, which when one regularly uses them, reduces the weight of each load by a couple of pounds.

A couple of pounds doesn’t amount to a lot, but when one considers the number of times the shovel moves a load of cargo on a daily basis, the total is quite large. Lets consider someone shoveling snow for 4 hours. Lets also think that the person averages 5 shovels per minute (which is a rather low number) and if that person needs to shovel for 4 hours, that is 1200 shovel loads. If there was 3 pounds less weight per load, the weight reduction is close to two tons when comparing metal to aluminum shovels. When one adds the load to the shovel, the combined weight could easily be 20 pounds. That times 1200 shovels equals 24,000 pounds.

Kind-of makes your back ache just thinking about it.

I’m sure that some of us can remember the time when we spent many hours shoveling snow to make a path to the barn, the feed shed, the chicken barn, the pig barn, the straw pile and the 5 foot drift in front of the machine shed. Once these areas were shoveled open, we needed to shovel feed for the cows and young stock, the pigs and the chickens.

On a weekly basis we needed to

shovel two pickup loads of corn and oats for grinding. This also required scooping the corn and oats into the grinder.

We also needed to shovel manure from the gutter in the cow barn.

However if there was deep snow the manure wagon was then shoveled on the manure pile.

Moving, moving, moving. It would have been much easier if we didn’t have to move everything before we found it usable or acceptable, but that is the “story of us.”

As I reread this story, I feel that I am sounding like those shows about living in Alaska. They continually talk about all the work they have to do in order to live. Well, they have a choice to move to an area that doesn’t require all the work, but then they wouldn’t have anything to talk about if there was an Alaskan show. Some of us who grew up on the farm did move away from it, but we still remember the “good old days.”

Today, there is usually some form of machine to reduce the destruction of the human back, but on the farm, the machines are a relief to those who already screwed up their backs. The farmers are getting older, but some of us have found that getting older is not actually that bad.

things to learn based on my personal goals?

Knowing that learning as an adult is radically different from learning as a child, I encourage you to explore these concepts and see how they change the way you approach a new topic. Levi’s methods just might make your next pursuit much more effective. He also has helpful advice on remembering what you have learned.

I am so grateful that starting with my mother – a teacher – I have been encouraged to keep learning even after my formal classroom education ended.

It has a value that I cannot put a price on. So many times, a little knowledge about a topic has been a conversation starter or led to a sale. Other times, it just prepares me for unexpected opportunities.

So I have a challenge for you! In this New Year, resolve to learn something new, if not every day, then every week

We have two young children, and we make a little over $85,000 combined. The problem is we have about $70,000 in debt.

Some of it is credit card debt, but nearly $50,000 is in two car loans. Her mom and dad have offered to let us move in with them, so we can save up money and start getting a better handle on our finances, but we’re not sure how we feel about this.

What’s your advice?

-Justin Dear Justin, You’ve got a ridiculous amount of money wrapped up in those cars. I’d sell the stupid things, get into a couple of little beaters, and start living on a budget and paying down debt.

In your situation, the only scenario where I’d even consider taking the in-

laws up on their offer is one where the stay is for a very short, agreed-upon period of time. They’d have to be absolutely wonderful people, too, and everyone involved would need to know their boundaries.

But you guys can get out of debt pretty fast if you’ll just lose the cars.

You could even save a little money on the side while you were paying down debt, and buy a better car as soon as the debt was gone.

You might love your cars so much that you’re unwilling to make the sacrifice. Not me. I’d rather keep my dignity intact, and work my way out of the mess I created!

Land Use Permitting The Todd County Planning and Zoning Ordinance requires landowners outside of city limits to obtain a land use permit for buildings and structures greater than 32 square feet. When all those things happen at once, it can only mean one thing: a new year!

We all love a good New Year’s celebration, but with it comes the reminder of goals, responsibilities, and resolutions for the upcoming year. And if you’re like most people, somewhere in the middle of all your resolutions is money—as in, the desire to manage it better.

If any of your resolutions for 2020 involve money, then your success will start with a budget. I know, the dreaded “B” word. Sure, creating a budget doesn’t really sound like much fun.

But doesn’t it sound better than feeling stressed because you’re living paycheck to paycheck? How much better would it be to know that all your bills are paid, and you’re working toward becoming debt-free or saving to pay cash for your summer vacation? That’s what you can do when you make a plan for your money!

You’ll give up on your resolution much more quickly without a plan. How do you start? First, figure out how much money you have to work with for the upcoming month—before the beginning of each month. This includes your income, your spouse’s income, and any extra income you may have.

Give every dollar a name. Spend every dollar, on purpose, on paper, before the month begins. This is called a zero-based budget, and it works. Basically, when you’re planning for the month

ahead, you should be able to subtract your expenses (outgo) from your income to equal zero. When you’re done writing the budget, you shouldn’t have anything left over. My favorite way to manage my budget is the free app EveryDollar.

It helps my husband and I stay on track.

A good plan lives and changes as your life changes. You’ll need to review your budget each month throughout the year to make adjustments. If you find you’ve budgeted too little or too much in an area, then adjust.

If you’ve been living without a budget, it will probably take a few months to get the hang of it, and that’s okay.

But soon you should have a budget you can rely on. A budget doesn’t limit your freedom, it gives you freedom to spend.

It’s about knowing where your cash is going, instead of wondering where it went. Just imagine how great it would feel to be in charge of your finances in 2020.

Emma is the daughter of Rachel and Kurt Pearson.

She enjoys reading, doing puzzles, math and spending time with her sister. She plans to go to college, most probably North Dakota State University. Emma’s favorite thing about school is being with her friends and taking math classes, and her advice to other students is “you only fail if you keep making the same mistake without trying to fix it, at least try instead of just giving up.” Emma plans on joining softball this spring.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the December Senior High Student of the Month, senior Cathleen Rieffer.

Cathleen is the daughter of Gail and Joel Rieffer.

She enjoys playing with her cats and putting together puzzles.

Cathleen plans to attend a four-year college upon graduation. Cathleen participates in many school activities including participating in tennis and track since seventh grade.

She was also in band for five years and serves on student council since her freshman year. She has been in speech and school theatre all through her junior and senior high career.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2013 Toyota SUV I am going to drive across country and back and will accumulate about 8000 miles on the odometer by the time I return. This vehicle has 45k miles on it and has not had any problems as of yet and no repairs other than tires and oil changes. Is there anything that I should do before I make the trip to be sure I am as safe as possible?

-Tracy in Hastings, Nebraska Dear Tracy, Anytime you are going on an extended trip it is good to have your vehicle at its best. Many folks have disappointing trips because they failed to have a simple check done and they experience a preventable breakdown.

When a vehicle is brought in for oil changes on a regular basis to your local mechanic they usually inspect for basic things like tire wear and pressure and anything out of the ordinary that could cause a failure like worn belts and hoses but not always. When preparing for a trip make sure to ask your mechanic specifically about a general check-over and tell them how far you will be traveling so they can look for things that may affect your journey. Failed tires, belts, hoses and batteries are the most common items that leave motorists stranded so be sure these are among the list of items checked before you go.

Hood and have not heard any negatives about them from your callers. I plan to drive about 40k miles a year and haul trailers in the 4500lb range about 30k of that as I haul a display for my company to trade shows. I want the comfort of a car and good mileage but also the load hauling capability. What are your thoughts?

-Mike in Portland, Maine Dear Mike, There’s a number of new smaller Diesel Engines on the market that can be found in half-ton trucks and smaller SUVs meant to give better mileage when towing smaller loads where a larger more powerful diesel was not needed; these new diesels are also very clean compared to the older larger ones which is good for the environment. You have a couple of key things in your question that are important factors on a vehicle for you. First, you say you will be towing a lot of miles which justifies more power and the added cost of the diesel option. Second for better fuel mileage the use of Diesels for towing long-haul should help with your economy. You ultimately have to decide when it comes to a purchase so always research and see what others are saying before you decide.

Upsala City January 6, 2020 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Dennis Westrich, Crystal Benson, and Brian Lange. Absent: Lana Bartells People present: First Response Members Marybeth Doucette, Garrett Doucette, Andrea Douvier, Jim Douvier, and President Seth Strassberg; Kevin Breth, Darlene Maciej, Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss, MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, CEDA Robert Harris, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Westrich moved to approve minutes from December 2, 2019 City Council Meeting, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Westrich moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Economic Development: Robert Harris with CEDA updated the Council on what is on his agenda, he also reviewed the results of the Health Needs Survey.

Harris introduced the idea of creating an Economic Development Authority.

Benson moved to reschedule the Short-term/Long-term planning meeting from January 20 to February 11 at 6:30 p.m., 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Harris also shared with the Council the email the City received from Upsala, Ontario, Canada asking us to be a sister city.

Fire Department Report: Garrett Doucette discussed the grant the Department received for a new washing machine for the turnout gear including electrical and installation. The total grant awarded is $9,918.90; the City is responsible for the estimated difference of $1,102.10.

Lange moved to approve the grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in the amount of $9,919.90 to purchase and install a new washing machine in the fire hall, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Baggenstoss reported that only five departments in Minnesota received FEMA grant money last year; the department was disappointed they did not get a grant for turnout gear.

Westrich moved to hire a grant writer for writing a FEMA grant in 2020 for turnout gear, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Benson moved to approve Jay Baggenstoss as Fire Chief, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss reported on the results of the Fire Departments recommendations for officers for 2020; Assistant Chief Nick Johnson, Captains Mike Kremers, Steve Heesen and Brian Lange, training officer Joe Trettel, and safety officer Steve Hansen.

Rescue Squad: Strassburg submitted their report with recommendation of officers for the First Response Team. Ben-

son moved approve the First Response Team with President: Andrea Douvier; Vice President: Garrett Doucette; Secretary: Andrew Wensmann; Training Officer: Danielle Haus; and Safety Officer: Seth Strassburg, 2nd by Westrich.

Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels.

He also stated that cars and trailers parked in the streets are still an issue when snowplowing. Mayor Johnson said he will reach out to Sheriff Shawn Larsen to help work on ticketing the vehicles that are in the streets when the plow truck goes through.

The cylinder on the bucket truck is getting repaired.

He and Koopmeiners will start putting airlines for the air compressor in the maintenance building.

The toilet in the water plant will get replaced.

He is trying to resolve the issues with a head on a chlorine tank.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the January Calendar.

The Council agreed for Stevens to extend her hours at City Hall from 32 hours a week to 36 hours a week when necessary.

Johnson explained the change in copier/printer machines; in order for the City to distribute the City’s newsletter to everyone in the area via the Morrison County Record, the newsletter would need to have zero staples. With the idea of printing on 11 x 17 paper, the City could print 1,100 copies and have them distributed via the Morrison County Record cheaper than mailing the newsletter out to 240 residents.

Unfinished Business: Due to the holidays and limited time, Benson postponed the research on Recognition Mugs until the new year.

Pam Whitmore with the League of MN Cities sent recommendations to the Council concerning the meeting she directed in December about resolving conflict.

Council directed Stevens to request Whitmore to attend February Council Meeting.

Whitmore also sent a thank you note to follow up.

New Business: Toning Plus Contract: Benson moved to approve the 2020 contract with Toning Plus/ James Warga, 2nd by lange.

Motion carried unanimously.

LMC Elected Leaders Conference: Lange move to approve up to two Council members to attend the Elected Leaders Conference in Baxter, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

2019 Designations & Appointments: Benson moved to approve the appointments for 2020 as discussed, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Morrison County Record as Legal Publisher: Benson moved to approve the Morrison County Record as the City’s legal publisher, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Board of Appeals and Equalization Training The Board of Appeals and Equalization meeting with the County is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

MN Power Donation: Benson moved to accept resolution 1-6-20-4 a resolution to accept a donation of $2000.00 from Minnesota Power given to the City of Upsala for Park Improvements, 2nd by Westrich.

Motion carried unanimously.

St. Mary’s One Day Liquor License: Lange moved to approve the one-day liquor license for St. Mary’s Church for February 15, 2020, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

St. Mary’s Gambling Permits: Westrich move to approve lawful gambling to St. Mary’s with no waiting period on February 16, 2020, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Benson moved to approve lawful gambling to St. Mary’s with no waiting period on April 3, 2020, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Morrison County Animal Humane Society: No action was taken.

Michelle Stevens, Clerk/ Treasurer Burtrum City January 6, 2020 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 pm on Monday, January 6th, 2020 by Mayor Ronald Strassburg. Those in attendance included: Ronald Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Deb VanHavermaet, Mitchell Bruggenthies, and Sharon Erickson.

The meeting minutes from December 2nd, 2019 were read and approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies, seconded by Sharon Erickson, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermet and seconded by Sharon Erickson. The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made

by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, no old business to discuss.

Next, in new business, when cleaning out snow, please be mindful of street crossings, so it is still visible to see any traffic.

Recycling pick up in the City of Burtrum is done every other Saturday from 9-11, same location as where the recycling bin use to be. Dates for this month will be January 11th and 25th, 2020.

As there was no further topics to discuss the meeting was adjourned with a motion first made by Deb VanHavermet on and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon votes motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.

The next City Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 3rd, 2020 at 7:00

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Jim Molitor.

Also present: Clif Allen and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Wednesday November 6, 2019 were reviewed. A motion was made

by Deb Wood to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

Clif Allen, City Engineer, was present to go over with the council the water tower recoat and outside repair. Advertising will start January and end in February. Bid opening will be a half an hour before the February city council meeting.

Allen stated that there will be a 2-year warranty in the bid agreement.

Allen also discussed with council the lift station for the second addition of North Berkey Avenue. There will be a storm water pond added to the plan. Allen will have more details at the next council meeting on the 2nd addition of North Berkey Addition.

The final levy for 2020 was discussed. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to raise the general service for 2020 $7,500.00.

The final levy for 2020 is set at general fund $86,000.00 and the debt service amount is set at $11,305.33 for a total levy amount of $97,305.33. Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Angie VanRisseghem, from Swanville Insurance, sent to each council member the City’s 2020 insurance renewal policy. Replacement costs on city owned buildings and equipment stored were discussed. Jim Molitor made a motion to not waive the statutory torte for the city. Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The proposed 2020 budget was handed out and discussed.

After discussion it was decided to table until the next council meeting.

Mayor Lange presented to council resolution #19-1203 which states the Decertification of TIF District No. 1-6.

After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept resolution #19-1203 to approve the Decertification of TIF District No.1-6. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

Conservation Reserver Program (CRP) Open Enrollment Period By the NRCS Office The United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency has opened a general and continuous CRP sign up period. The enrollment period for general CRP practices began on December 9th and will remain open until February 28th. The enrollment period for continuous CRP practices began on December 9th and is ongoing.

CRP is a conservation program that is administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). Land owners who are accepted into the program receive an annual rental payment in exchange for enrolling their land into a conservation planting. Landowners may also receive cost share dollars and other sign up incentives for installing the conservation

plantings. There are opportunities to enroll tree plantings, prairie plantings, pollintator plantings, food plots and many more practices through CRP. CRP contracts are based on a 10-15 year contract period.

Currently there are 22 million acres enrolled into CRP Nationwide. The 2018 Farm Bill lifted that cap to 27 million acres. This provides landowners a wonderful opportunity to enroll their property into CRP for the first time and it provides landowners with expiring CRP contracts an opportunity to reenroll their property for another term. If you are interested in setting aside land into CRP, reenrolling land into CRP or want to learn more about CRP please stop into your local USDA service center.

Great horned owls are early nesters

By Val Cunningham It takes a long time for owlets to develop survival skills, so these big owls buy some time by starting their nests in winter.

Q. Is it crazy to think I was hearing an owl hooting one night right after Halloween?

A. Not crazy at all. The most common owl in Minnesota is the great horned owl, and males begin hooting in the fall, to reassert their ownership of a territory. Also, a male and female will begin duet hooting as part of courtship about two months before nesting begins in January or February.

These large birds nest early, timing it so their youngsters are learning to hunt about the time that other species’ youngsters (mice, voles, rabbits, squirrels) become available as prey. Keep your eyes peeled: If you’re hearing owls hooting, there’s a chance they might be setting up a nest nearby. Owl aren’t builders, instead they adopt an old nest abandoned by a squirrel, hawk or crows, or use a snag in a large tree.

What’s up with goldfinches?

Q. We’ve fed birds for more than 30 years and have always had a good mix of birds. But this fall there were very few goldfinches around. Are they in decline?

A. I haven’t read about any drop in the goldfinch population, here or elsewhere. These are very successful little birds and they tend to do well in our region. What may be happening is that goldfinches migrate in the fall, although it’s more like a population shift: Our backyard birds move southward and are replaced by finches moving in from the north. There can be a delay between the time one group leaves and the other arrives, and I’d bet that’s what was happening in your neighborhood.

Are feeders ok?

Q. Is it okay to feed birds in the winter, or does this make them dependent on our feeders?

A. This is a frequently asked question and I always recommend feeding birds in every season of the year, but especially in winter. Birds don’t become dependent on our feeders, instead regarding them as one of many stops along their daily feeding routes.

However, in winter’s cold, when there’s less food in nature and less daylight for finding it, feeders are very welcome. Birds need at least 25 percent more calories in cold weather to maintain their body temperature, and they especially need to eat at sunup and just before sundown, to make it through the long night.

You might see up to 15 species of

birds around your feeding station in winter, such as cardinals, chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, house finches and goldfinches, blue jays, crows, juncos, starlings, house sparrows and brown creepers. Most of these birds travel in small flocks on a circuit between favorite feeding sites each day.

Tail flickers Q. I’ve always wondered why some birds, like eastern phoebes, for instance, flick their tails up and down all the time?

A. That’s a very good question and the best explanation I could find came from a study in California of black phoebes. Researchers noted that they pump their tails all day long, and increase the rate when a hawk is in the area. They concluded that the tail action sends the signal to the hawk that the phoebe knows it’s there, and the phoebe is healthy and quick and will escape if the predator approaches. Essentially, tail wagging is fidgeting with a purpose.

Do birds avoid parks?

Q. I hardly ever see or hear birds in Loring Park in Minneapolis, although there are lots of squirrels. Do birds avoid all city parks??

A. Even though many city parks are an oasis of green in a sea of concrete and asphalt, they offer little for most birds. A park’s trees provide food and shelter for some species in spring and fall, but expanses of grass essentially are a desert for birds. Right across from Loring Park is the Minne-

apolis Sculpture Garden with its lush prairie plantings, and these are always rife with birds. Birds don’t necessarily avoid parks, but they don’t tend to flock to them, either.

Late hummingbird Q. Just wanted to let you know that a male hummingbird arrived at my nectar feeder in early October and could be seen every day until October 19.

A. It’s amazing to think of a hummingbird, especially a male, showing up at a feeder that late in the season.

This is a good argument for keeping nectar feeders hanging until two weeks after seeing the last hummingbird, precisely for this kind of straggler.

A Lean “Funny”

Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old fellow who always prayed, “Lord, prop us up on our leanin’ side.”

After hearing him pray that prayer many times, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently.

He answered, “Well sir, you see, it’s like this...I got an old barn out back.

It’s been there a long time; it’s withstood a lot of weather; it’s gone through a lot of storms, and it’s stood for many years. It’s still standing. But one day I noticed it was leaning to one side a bit.

So I went and got some pine poles and propped it up on its leaning side so it wouldn’t fall.

Then I got to thinking about that and how much I was like that old barn.

I’ve been around a long time. I’ve withstood a lot of life’s storms. I’ve withstood a lot of bad weather in life, I’ve withstood a lot of hard times, and I’m

still standing too. But I find myself leaning to one side from time to time, so I like to ask the Lord to prop us up on our leaning side, ‘cause I figure a lot of us get to leaning at times.

Sometimes we get to leaning toward anger, leaning toward bitterness, leaning toward hatred, leaning toward cussing, leaning toward a lot of things that we shouldn’t.

So we need to pray, ‘Lord, prop us up on our leanin’ side,’ so we will stand straight and tall again, to glorify the Lord.”

Being a Leader Within Your Community

By Dave Ramsey Leadership means doing a lot more than making hiring decisions, signing paychecks, and taking care of your team and your company. True leaders motivate others to take action.

When you think of leaders in your community, who comes to mind? Public officials? Civic group presidents?

Pastors? These are fine choices, but many entrepreneurs don’t realize how their business acumen and leadership skills in the corporate world can be used to enhance the communities in which they live.

If you don’t already consider yourself a leader with the community, then think about this: You have the potential to be one. If you’ve ever wanted to be more civic minded, and become a leader in the private sector as well, take some time to think about these ideas.

Find a cause you’re passionate about Believe it or not, you have the power to influence other decision-makers in your community. When an issue that’s important to you arises, write letters to politicians respectfully expressing your thoughts and ideas. Attend town hall meetings, and tell your city council why you care. Get to know these people, and make your voice heard in a kind and thoughtful manner.

Make it a family service outing True servant leaders put others first. Is there a ministry or a nonprofit whose mission you identify with? Find one you really believe in, and give it your all. Invest your time, energy and resources into it, and you’ll have the power to make a real difference.

On top of that, make it a family affair. Giving back to the community while sharing the experience with your family can be a bonding and learning experience your kids will remember the rest of their lives.

Make things personal There’s something special about a handwritten note in today’s culture of email and text messages — especially one that’s unexpected. If you know someone who has a tough job or just needs a reminder that they’re awesome, let them know! You’re guaranteed to become a source of inspiration in their lives. People who do things like this gain influence and respect.

Surprise people whose job it is to serve others People who work stressful jobs serving others often don’t receive the appreciation they deserve. Let them know their work matters! Bring treats to the nurses’ station at your local hospital or to the teachers’ lounge at your neighborhood school. Drop off some pizza or sandwiches at the police department or fire station. Then, watch their faces light up when you remind
