Aristotle viewed friendship among the highest virtues. It was an essential element in a full, virtuous and worthwhile life.

For Aristotle, there were three kinds of friendship: • Friendship of pleasure: Two people are wonderfully happy in each other’s company.

• Friendship of utility: Two people assist each other in everyday aspects of life.

• Friendship of virtue: Two people mutually admire each other and will be on best behavior in order not to jeopardize their relationship.

That’s so much easier said than done, given the busyness that we call life.

I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I hadn’t had such loyal and true friends. I am fortunate to number among my friends several classmates from first grade, as well as people I just met. My friends have saved my bacon over and over again. A few have actually saved my life.

So where does friendship fit into your business life? That’s what often begins as “friendship of utility.”

You probably spend most of your waking hours at work, so friendships are natural. Working together can easily turn co-workers into best friends, making jobs more enjoyable and the workplace a home away from home instead of a pit of boredom or an arena of stress.

But friendships need to be managed appropriately just like every other workplace relationship. You need to understand and respect each other’s boundaries and privacy, just like with personal relationships. But work issues can present some unique challenges so that neither your friendships nor your job are at risk.

• Limit social chatter. Don’t let your friendly conversations overshadow your responsibilities. Stay focused on your job most of the time.

• Keep private issues private. When you have problems to discuss, do it over

lunch or after work. You don’t want to make your co-workers privy to your personal dramas – and they probably don’t want to listen to them either.

• Avoid gossip. Most of us love to talk about other people, but keep your natural inclination to share rumors about co-workers or managers in check.

If colleagues realize you’re gossiping about them, the backlash could be unpleasant.

• Don’t do each other’s jobs.

Robert “Bob” Sobiech

Obituaries Adella H. Thelen

Adella H. Thelen, age 88 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on We d n e s d a y, December 31, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Adella Hildegard Mueller was born August 8, 1926 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Kettler) Mueller. She graduated from Melrose High School. In 1948, she married Roman Hinnenkamp at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

Roman passed away in 1958. On May 7, 1960 she married Herbert “Herb” Thelen at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Adella worked at Stearns Electric in Melrose for over 30 years. She enjoyed traveling, golfing, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends.

Adella was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian

Mothers, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children, Doris (Glenn) Winter of Bertha, Jeanne Thelen of New Hope, Jan (Mark) Lefebvre of Clear Lake, and Jim (Lynn) Thelen of Centerville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Edward (Kitty) Mueller of Melrose; and sister-inlaw, Millie Mueller of Melrose.

Adella was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Roman Hinnenkamp in 1958; second husband, Herbert “Herb” Thelen on April 27, 2012; brothers and sisters, Mary Mueller, Joseph Mueller, Agnes (Boniface) Hinnenkamp, Lawrence Mueller, Loretta (Edward) Frieler, and Irene (Ronald) Shay.

Serving as casket bearers were Glenn Winter, Rob Winter, Mark Lefebvre, Jackson Lefebvre, Max Thelen, and Charlie Thelen. Cross bearer was Emma Lefebvre and scripture bearer was Kristin Enger.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Robert “Bob” Sobiech, 68 year old resident of Sobieski, MN passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, MN. A visitation was held from 4-8 P.M. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Burial took place on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. Bob was born on February 23, 1946 in Little Falls, MN to the late Lawrence and Verle (Schrupp) Sobiech. He grew up in Sobieski, MN and attended school in Upsala, where he graduated high school.

Upon graduation Bob enlisted into the U.S. Army on November 17, 1965 and honorably served overseas in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on October 29, 1968. Bob was united in marriage to Kayla Lambrecht on March 11, 1972 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church

in Sobieski, MN. He worked his entire life as a heavy equipment operator for the Local 49 Labor Union. In his free time, Bob enjoyed gardening, trapping, hunting, and doing dirtwork. He was a collector of many things and always made sure he had two of everything. Most recently he loved having new buildings constructed or improved on his property. Bob was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Bob is survived by his children, Kevin (Sheila Szczodroski) Sobiech of Little Falls, MN, Denise (Steve Gregory) Dempsey of Little Falls, MN, Kim (Eric) Fochler of Royalton, MN, and Billie Jo (Jacob) Waltman of Little Falls, MN; brothers, Ronald (Barb) Sobiech of Maple Grove, MN, Roger (Michele) Sobiech of Bella Vista, AR, and Charles (Debbie) Sobiech of Swanville, MN; sisters, Janice (Vic) Schlangen of Avon, MN and Mary (Larry Smiley) Guggemos of Eden Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Daniela, Carlie, Ana, Gretchen Sobiech, Mason, Maxwell, Olivia Dempsey, Coltin, and Alex Waltman; and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by parents, Lawrence and Verle Sobiech.

Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Robert John Thelen, 87, of Albany was held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Bob passed away at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home surrounded by his family on Tuesday morning December 30, 2014.

Bob was born on March 11, 1927 to Joseph and Anna (Haehn) Thelen in St. Martin. He married Dolores Ebensteiner on June 13, 1951, they settled in the Albany area. Bob spread his musical talents throughout the area playing in many bands. He worked at Gretch Chevrolet until he and his son, Terry,

started Thelen’s Service Center and Thelen Motorhome Rental in Albany. He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and a former member of the Albany Fire Department.

Anniversary Open House Walter and Loura Beuning

There will be an open house to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary for Walter and Loura Beuning (Beste) of Freeport on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015 at the Greenwald Pub in Greenwald from 2-5 p.m.

Walter and Loura were married Jan. 16, 1965 in Albany.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 Pitching in to help a friend in a crunch is admirable, but keep to a reasonable limit. Your manager is in charge of assignments and responsibilities, not you. You don’t want to spend so much time helping a friend do his or her job that you neglect your own.

• Include, don’t exclude. Don’t ignore the rest of your work place.

Invite other co-workers to lunch, and include them in your conversations so they don’t feel left out. You may even make new friends by expanding your circle at work.

If you value your relationships with family and friends outside of work, you need to work to maintain them. Take a few cues from your job for evaluating your priorities and scheduling your activities. These “friendships of pleasure” are worth all the effort you put into them.

A mission statement might be helpful. You have career goals and aspirations. It’s just as important to establish what kind of relationship you want with your family and friends. A clear mission statement can help keep you focused on your personal life goals, especially when your schedule gets demanding.

Time management is just as important for friendships as for your business schedule. Keep all your commitments with family and friends on one calendar, planner or smartphone

so nothing falls through the cracks.

Spend some time planning your personal time. Review your schedule so that you are prepared for your most important activities.

Honor your plans. When you must choose between events, decide which is more in line with your mission, values and goals.

Finally, I’m not sure if this is the best example of a “friendship of virtue,” but I love this story.

A losing football coach felt all the fates were against him. The team hated him, the fans hated him, even his wife and children were losing confidence in him. The only one who loved him was his dog. The dog was always glad to see him.

The coach told his wife, “A dog is fine, but a man can’t live with just one friend.”

So she bought him a second dog.

Mackay’s Moral: The best vitamin for developing friends is B1.

Be gentle and loving, but also be firm that from this point on you’re going to make him live up to his end of the bargain where the car insurance and cell phone are concerned.

Let him know with utter certainty you’re going to shut off his cell phone and cancel his insurance the next time he doesn’t have his share of the money when the bill comes due. Then, do it if he doesn’t pay up on time!

You still have the control in this situation, Steve. You just have to exercise it. Your son may not like it at first, but you’ll both benefit from the process.

Community Snapshots

On January 3 & 4, the Prairie Centre Bantam Hockey team traveled to Alexandria to compete in tournament play. On Saturday, the boys began the tournament by taking on Hibbing. The team came out strong and skated to an 8-0 victory. Later that evening, the boys took the ice again to face the team from Morris/Benson. The Morris/Benson Storm were smaller but quick and provided the Prairie Centre North Stars with a fast paced game. The North Stars ended the game with a 7-2 win. The championship game found the North Stars facing the hometown team of Alexandria on Sunday. The two teams went head to head for much of the game but in the end, Prairie Centre came out victorious with a 4-1 final score. 4 Time Management Tips for the New Year

By Christy Wright The New Year is here, which means it’s a great time to start focusing on your goals. And since managing your time is a constant struggle for most people, it’s a great place to begin.

Here are four easy time management tips from Christy Wright, Business Coach and Speaker for Ramsey Solutions.

1. Identify your priorities. Before each month begins, be proactive and arrange your calendar to reflect what’s important to you. If that means visiting your aging parents three states away, then put them at the top of your list (even if your kids have to miss a soccer game or two).

When you manage your commitments, they stop managing you.

2. Create space in your schedule.

We often feel guilted into taking on responsibilities that are not our own, like chaperoning field trips or saying yes to extra work projects. Stop raising your hand just because no one else will step up. When you commit to less, you’ll free up more time for your own priorities.

3. Schedule leisure time. When you

finish everything else, then you’ll spend time reading, exercising and playing with your kids, right? But that never happens! So go ahead and schedule some leisure time on your calendar. This will help to ensure these important parts of your life get plenty of time as well.

4. Protect your schedule. Even if you start off your week with the best of intentions, things will inevitably come up. You’ll get requests from work, invitations from friends, and distractions from every corner of your life. But it’s vital that you protect your schedule.

Catholic Charities Senior Dining Program Grows Through Catholic Charities’ Plant a Row Harvest a Row program, members of the St. Cloud area can grow and donate fresh fruits and vegetables to local senior dining centers.

In November, Donald and Rose Ann Pflueger of Avon, donated 45 heads of cabbage to Catholic Charities Senior Dining program in Albany.

Last fall’s donations provided over 2,500 servings for senior dining centers and Meals on Wheels recipients; individual seniors have received nearly 1,000 servings.

A contract with Healthy Communities—Stearns County has helped the program grow and develop relationships with local community gardens and farmer’s markets.

Knights of Columbus Host Exemplification The Saint Gregory the Great Knight’s of Columbus Council 12604, which serves the Parishes of Holy Cross in North Prairie, St. Stanislaus in Bowlus, St. Edward’s in Elmdale, and St. Mary’s in Upsala, will be hosting an Exemplification in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree of Knighthood at St. Mary’s Church in Upsala on Sunday, January 18th, beginning at 9 am with registration.

Seventh grader Jackson Thieschafer has been chosen as the December Student of the Month for grades 7-9. Jackson is the son of Jay and Tara Thieschafer. Jackson is already very active in school activities participating in football this fall, basketball for the past two years and plans to go out for baseball this spring. ing to help others in need. There have been several times that I have witnessed Jackson going out of his way to help another classmate or peer in the hall. He is constantly looking out for the best interest of his classmates. Jackson always displays great respect for those around him. Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month Prayer puts our faith at risk.

When we “pray to God in faith believing” and nothing happens or the results are different from what we expected or there is no answer at all, the tendency is to question the goodness and wisdom of God. Nor is it unusual for people to doubt the need for prayer when or if they don’t get what they want.

As we begin to read Psalm 28 David seems to be having a problem in his prayer life. “I pray to You, O Lord, my Rock. Do not turn a deaf ear to me.” Notice the way he begins: “I pray to You!” His prayer is direct and intense. But there is something very important to be noted here. In this moment of need David, in no uncertain terms, lets us into his heart. Prayer was not just part of his life.

It was at the center of his life. He was completely dependent upon the Lord for help. “You, O Lord, are my Rock!” This prayer, though we do not know specifically what David was praying for, arose from a definite need at a specific time in his life. Perhaps years later, when he was writing of this experience, he could not remember specifically what his request was, but he could not forget that he had a need that only God could meet.

And God met that need and granted his request.

In this prayer we hear his cry and see his hands raised to God demonstrating his dependence on Yahweh. And his prayer was answered. “Praise be to the Lord,” he finally shouted, “for He has heard my cry for mercy.”

God always answers us - but on His terms.

Connor Poland has been chosen as the December Swanville Student of the Month for grades 10-12. He is the son of Timothy and Jennifer Poland. Connor is a senior.

He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Healthy Communities Collaborative. He is a green belt Taekwan Do and is working on his blue belt.

Gina Christopherson, Band and Music Instructor states, “I have had the pleasure of knowing Connor for the past six years. He is a joy to have in classboth as my TA and as a member of the concert band. Connor’s determination to improve and succeed will take him far in accomplishing his dreams. He spends much time working to improve his musical skills outside of the school day working on preparing his trumpet solo and basic violin skills. This will serve him well in the college of his choosing in the near future.

Throughout the school and in the community, Connor is always working hard to be a positive role model. He takes control of a situation, stands up for what is right, and does his best to ensure that underclassmen are given the opportunity to succeed. Connor is very deserving of being our student of the month! Congratulations, Connor! Keep up the hard work!

Connor also volunteers his time and talents by serving as a youth group student leader at Little Falls Missionary Alliance, and working as a sound technician at Brighter Days family Church in Burtrum. He regularly volunteers at Ruby’s Pantry,Oasis Share a Meal, bell ringing for the Salvation Army and various other volunteer activities in the area.

He also works at Coborns in Little Falls.

“Respect each other, and do what’s right, no matter what,” is his advice to fellow classmates.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City December 9, 2014 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 9th day of December, 2014 in council chambers. Council members present were Ralph Muellner and Dennis Barrett. Council members absent were Andrea Kraska and Thom Muellner. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann, Andy Bartkowicz and guests Joe Arnzen, Matt Zinniel and Romie Gessell Jr. A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve the minutes of the November 12, 2014 meeting as written. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the minutes of the November 25, 2014 Emergency meeting as written. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Jetting and televising the sewer lines. Andy stated that there was actually two thousand feet less to jet and televise, which could result in a little cheaper quote. Andy also stated that the prices quoted were for now but was certain that come spring the prices would increase.

2. Old City Hall was discussed. There was no new information to report at this time.

3. The council discussed an issue with a culvert at the corner or Woodman Street North and North Lake Street West. Since this culvert really can’t be fixed until spring, Andy was instructed to get a cover to put over the top to eliminate further damage.

4. The lawn mower that is used with the snow blower has been dented. Andy was instructed to find out how the damage occurred. Any damage to city equipment or property must be reported to the City Clerk immediately.

The council reviewed applications for the City Maintenance position. Currently there are no applications with the licensing needed for water and wastewater.

Matt is willing to continue to work with the city to train the individual to obtain the needed licensing. The license requirements for the city is a Class D Wastewater and a Class C Water and would require a three year time commitment from Matt before a person could obtain the needed licensing. An unlicensed individual would need to complete one year of working under Matt before they would be qualified to take the tests for Class D Water and Class D Wastewater. Once the Class D Water license is obtained, it would is an additional two years of working under Matt to be qualified to take the Class C Water license.

The council called for a special meeting to be held on Monday,

December 15, 2014 at 6:30 p.m., to interview any applicants interested in the position. The special meeting notice and agenda will be posted at City Hall, the post office and the bulletin board next to Style N Go. Romie Gessell Jr. was in attendance for the council to view a truck for council consideration. The truck is a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado automatic transmission with push button four wheel drive. A motion was made by Jim Gohman to purchase the 2008 Chevrolet Colorado from Gessell Auto Sales for $8,807.38 which includes, tax, title and license. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the liquor license application for the Double R Saloon, Inc. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the 3.2 liquor license application for The Junction. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve tobacco licenses for Double R Saloon, Inc., The Junction, Chris’ Country Store and Grey Eagle Gas and Grocery. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Library book return will be painted in the spring.

The council discussed water and sewer rates. A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to increase the water minimum rate from $11 to $12.50 and the sewer flat rate from $29 per month to $29.75 effective January 1, 2015.

A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Jim Gohman to assess a $5 late fee to any utility bills that are unpaid on the 26th of each month, effective January 1, 2015. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve Resolution No. 2014-22, A Resolution Approving the 2015 Final Levy. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution is as follows: Resolution No. 2014-22: A Resolution Adopting Proposed Levy Payable In 2015 Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the following proposed budget for 2015 was approved and adopted by the Grey Eagle City Council on this 9th day of December, 2014.

The council discussed the wood burner issue and information received from the City Attorney regarding this matter.

The Clerk presented the council with information regarding a recent survey to the property owned by Loretta Peterson. The property is in the process of being sold and during the survey and title search it was found that there was an alley running north and south along the east side of the driveway. It was found that a portion of the driveway and the garage are on this property and in order for the property to be sold, the city would need to grant a license agreement or an easement agreement. The Clerk was instructed to have all materials sent to the City Attorney for review before a decision could be made.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2014-23, A Resolution Accepting $150 Donation from Swanville Dollars for Scholars for Fire Department Equipment. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution may be read in its entirety at the Clerk’s office.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve Resolution No. 2014-24, A Resolution Accepting $1,500 Donation from the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for the Empty Stocking Program. A second was made

by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution may be read in its entirety at the Clerk’s office.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2014-25, A Resolution Appointing the Swanville Insurance Agency, and Julie Zupko as the Agent for Insurance through the League of Minnesota Cities. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed the two vehicles that have been towed on to a vacant lot in the city. The owners of the vehicles as well as the property owners were sent letters requiring that these vehicles be removed. The Clerk was instructed to contact the City Attorney to obtain more information regarding towing the vehicles from the lot.

The council discussed cleaning the streets before the colder weather freezes what is there.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $2,008.60 from Sewer Fund to Sewer Infrastructure Fund for the period December 2013 and March through November 2014, $8,382.10 from HCP Fund to General Fund for RV Park engineer fees, $14,372.61 from Water Fund (301) to Street Improvement Debt Service Fund for the water portion of the street project and $82.70 from the General Fund of which $24.70 goes to the Water Fund and $58 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Lori Hellmann, Clerk Grey Eagle City Special Meeting December 15, 2014 The special meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order at 6:30 p.m., by Mayor Jim Gohman on Monday, December 15, 2014 in council chambers. Council members present were Ralph Muellner and Thom Muellner. Council members absent were Andrea Kraska and Dennis Barrett. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann and guests Larry Hellmann, Shawn Wunderlich and Damion Majerus.

The council looked over the applications for the six individuals to be interviewed. None of the applicants had the water or wastewater licensing needed, so anyone that the council may hire would need to work under our licensed operator, Matt Zinniel until the licenses are obtained. This would be a minimum of a three year commitment for Matt. Only three of the six applicants attended the council meeting to be interviewed.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to hire Larry Hellmann for 35 hours per week at $14 per hour. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed wages for Matt to continue as the water and wastewater operator. Matt currently receives $350 per month as a back-up operator. The council agreed to go back to $700 per month, which was the rate that Matt received as the water and wastewater operator prior to Andy’s employment.

The council discussed the junk cars that were put on a vacant lot.

The clerk and Mayor discussed the situation with both the City Attorney and Petrie. The maximum it could potentially cost the city is $2,250 for towing of both vehicles and impound fees for 45 days. The matter was tabled.

The council discussed the ditch along Jackson Street. The excavator will be contacted informing them that this needs to be cleaned out before it freezes.

The council discussed the installation of an emergency light on the new city truck. Jim will contact Gessell’s to get a price estimate.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to adjourn the meeting at 8:44 p.m. A second was made

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, November 6, 2014 were read. A motion was made by Tim Grittner to approve the minutes as read. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jay Bartkowicz and seconded by Tim Grittner to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson handed out a credit card policy regarding city workers using the city credit card.

After discussion, council was in favor to have the policy put into effect. The city clerk and maintenance man can both use the city credit card, both signed the policy form.

There was discussion on frozen city water lines policy. Residents are to test their water during the cold weather, if the temperature is at 40 degrees or colder residents are to leave a small stream of water running and contact the city clerk so their water bill will be adjusted.

If the water line becomes frozen the city will pay for half of the thawing charge. Lonny will purchase thermometers for residents to use to test their water.

A very part time person is needed to plow snow should the maintenance man be out of town.

An ad will be put in the paper for this position.

City Attorney, Tim Churchwell, and City Engineer, Mark Hallen, was present to discuss with the council the Rhoda Avenue Project.

Churchwell has looked over the project contract and drew up a preliminary letter to be sent to Larson Excavating. The letter states the retainage amount due is $56,075.28, city contracted work in the amount of $9,868.52, final retainage amount: $46,206.76. As Larson failed to meet the completion date the letter states that a final payment check in the amount of $26,435.42 will be sent. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to send the letter to Larson Excavating. Mayor Peterson seconded the motion.

Council members Mayor Peterson, Jim Molitor, and Tim Grittner voted in favor, council member Jay Bartkowicz opposed. Motion carried.

Julie Zupko was present to go over the city insurance renewal policy. Zupko explained the waiver form. After discussion, Mayor Peterson made a motion to not waive

the monetary limits on the waiver form. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Zupko also discussed with the council when renting out any city owned building, a liability certificate from the renters home owners policy should be on file for liability purposes.

Jim Molitor made a motion to have renters produce an liability certificate in order to rent a city owned building. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, Motion carried.

The Morrison County Animal Humane Contract was read. Tim Grittner made a motion to sign the contract. Mayor Peterson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The levy for 2015 was discussed. After discussion Mayor Peterson made a motion to leave the general fund the same as last year. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The final levy General Fund is $73,500.00 and the Debt Service Amount is set at $11,231.15 for a total levy amount of $84,731.15.

There was discussion if the lots to the west of MT Repair should be rezoned as residential lots. After discussion, Council members were not in favor.

Tony Maciej was present to discuss with the council the need to replace the Jaws of Life that the Swanville Rural Fire Department uses. The cost for the new equipment should be under $20,000.00.

Mayor Peterson made a motion to purchase this equipment for the benefit to the residents and surrounding area people. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The funding to pay this request to purchase new Jaws of Life equipment for the Fire Department will come from the Swanville Lions Club donated funds.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jay Bartkowicz and seconded by Tim Grittner to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

December 29, 2014: At approximately 2 pm the Todd County Sheriff’s Office and Grey Eagle Fire Department responded to a camper trailer fire at 216 Cedar St. N in the city of Grey Eagle.

The homeowner had the fire under control when law enforcement and fire department arrived. No action was taken by the fire department and no one was injured in the fire. It was believed a heat lamp caused the fire.

December 30, 2014: At approximately 2134 hours the TCSO received

an accident report. It was reported that a car had gone off road and struck a tree on Co Rd 100 near the Long Lake boat access. The driver was later identified as Brandy Peterson of rural Grey Eagle. Peterson was transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital by Sauk Centre Ambulance for her injuries. Peterson’s 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix appeared to be a total loss. Sauk Centre Fire and Rescue and Petrie’s Towing assisted on the scene.

Film and event draw attention to the realities and challenges facing people with Alzheimer’s and those who care for them.

Volunteers of America is proud to present a screening of the award-winning documentary, Glen Campbell “I’ll Be Me,” at Upsala Area Schools on Sunday, January 18 at 3:00 p.m. The documentary is a powerful portrait of the life and musical legacy of the great American musical icon known for hits including Rhinestone Cowboy, Wichita Lineman and Gentle on My Mind.

After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Campbell and his wife, Kim, went public with the diagnosis and announced his goodbye tour.

“I’ll Be Me” documents Glen and his family’s attempt to navigate the wildly unpredictable nature of the progressing disease using love, laughter and music as their medicine of choice. The deadline to apply for early season spring wild turkey hunting permits is Friday, Jan. 9, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The spring season, which runs from April 15 to May 28, is divided into eight time periods. Only people age 18 and older who want to hunt during the first three time periods (A-C) need to apply for a spring turkey permit. Permits for

DNR to Fly for Deer and Elk Surveys Low-flying helicopters will be used for white-tailed deer population surveys planned by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for January through March in central and southeastern Minnesota, if suitable snow conditions develop.

“We use aerial surveys to help monitor deer populations in portions of Minnesota,” said Gino D’Angelo, DNR farmland deer project leader. “These flights provide data to improve our understanding of how deer populations respond to management, which helps us to make decisions about future deer hunting season regulations.”

Deer will be counted during daylight hours at an altitude of about 200 feet. These counts are used to estimate deer numbers in deer permit areas. A representative sampling of 1 square mile areas within the permit areas are flown that allows for a statistically valid representation of the population in a given area.

“The goal is to complete deer permit areas 214, 215, 218, 219, 221, 223, 224, 229, 241, and 248 in Becker, Benton, Cass, Hubbard, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pope, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Wadena, Wilkin, and Wright counties; and deer permit areas 341, 343, 345, 347, and 348 in Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona counties,” D’Angelo said. “Successful completion of the surveys requires continuous snow conditions over the survey areas in order to complete them all.”

Aerial elk surveys are also planned for the Kittson County and Grygla elk ranges in northwestern Minnesota.

Rep. Paul Anderson takes House Oath Rep. Paul Anderson took his fourth oath of office to serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives Tuesday at the Capitol.

The Republican farmer from Starbuck is serving as chair of the House Agriculture Policy Committee this biennium. He also will be on Ag. Finance, Education Finance, and the Property Taxes & Local Government Finance Division.

Kresha Sworn in for Second Term Representative Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, was officially sworn in for his second term Tuesday as the legislature began the 2015 session.

“It’s a great honor to begin my second term at the legislature, and I’m looking forward to working hard on behalf of the residents of Morrison and Todd County,” Kresha said. “The Republican majority is ready to get to work and offer practical solutions to the problems our state faces. Kresha, who was first elected in 2012, was elected Assistant Majority Leader by his peers last month, and will serve as Vice Chair of the Education Finance Committee. He will also serve as a member of the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee, the Education Innovation Policy Committee, and the Rules and Legislative Administration

During his first term, Kresha was a vocal proponent of broadband expansion in Greater Minnesota, as well as increased funding for nursing homes and long-term care facilities for seniors and the disabled. In October 2014, Kresha was named by Governor Mark Dayton to the Governor’s Task Force on Child Protection, the lone representative from the House Republican Caucus.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, Kresha delivered a speech seconding the motion made by Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-Eden Prairie, to formally nominate and elect Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, the next Speaker of the House.
