Unfortunately the only exercise some people get is jumping to conclusions, running down others, side-stepping responsibility and pushing their luck. Don’t be like the person who thinks that tossing and turning at night should be considered exercise. Or the guy who spends his time at the gym doing diddly squats.

Starting to exercise is easier than you think. Start small and give your body time to adjust. Even 10 minutes a day should fit into most schedules. Before long, 10 minutes won’t be enough. It’s hard to change habits, but this habit is worth the effort. Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, especially as we age. I’ve gained a lot by staying active.

A lot of people think they need to be athletic to exercise. Not true. There are many ways to stay active: ride a bike, dance, hike, yoga, housecleaning and gardening. Listen to

music or podcasts while you move. Just do something!

Consider the many free and simple ways to incorporate activity into your daily routine. If you are a golfer, walk the course instead of using a cart. Take the stairs instead of an elevator. Park farther away from your destination and walk the extra distance. I used to run 3-5 miles a day, but as years go by, I walk more instead. Walking is one of the easiest and most convenient activities you can do. Walking helps my fitness and clears my thinking.

This isn’t a new idea. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician who is referred to as the Father of Medicine, wrote about the dangers of too little physical activity. Is it any wonder that the Olympic Games originated in Greece?

A zillion studies have documented the health benefits of an active life style and exercise, such as fending off heart attacks, improving balance and reducing risk of falls, improving sleep, reducing stress and anxiety, controlling blood pressure and preventing some diseases like arthritis, heart disease, stroke and cancer.

I’ve been exercising 60-90 minutes a day most of my life. It just makes me feel better, gives me energy to work more productively and, I hope, live longer. My philosophy is exercise doesn’t take time; it makes time.

Create a routine that works for you.

For example, I’ve been told by countless trainers that exercising in the morning is best.

However, I struggle with that, but exercising at night while watching the news or a sporting event on TVworks well for my schedule. The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen.

Good things come to those who sweat.

Fitness is not about being better than

someone else. It’s about being better than you used to be. And stretching is an important part of fitness. Did you know that stretching goes back to the Ancient Greeks, who encouraged its military and athletes to stretch?

I constantly preach this lesson: Practice makes perfect, not true. You have to add one word. Perfect practice makes perfect. Practice something time and time again and, if you don’t know what you are doing, all you are really doing is perfecting an error. You have put a ceiling on how good you can become.

I’m a big believer in having coaches for various activities. My marathon coach helped me complete 10 marathons. I have a stretching coach named Aaron Taylor who has added years to my life. I am motivated by the statement sore today, strong tomorrow.

That’s why I recommend Aaron’s new book, “Stretching Your Way to a Pain-Free Life” so you practice the right stretching concepts. You don’t want to hurt yourself. I’m such a believer, I wrote the Foreword for his book.

I don’t know of any sport that you play where you don’t warm up first, and stretching should be part of it. Just like exercise, a good stretch clears up your mind and body.

Aaron has given me 10-15 yards on my golf drives thanks to superior stretching.

That’s big for me because I play golf for $1 million in pride every week with my buddies, and I’ll take every advantage I can get!

Mackay’s Moral: Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Early Clothes Dryer

Today, when doing the laundry, we take the clothes out of the washer with the water mostly removed from them. They are then put in the dryer where dry heated air tumbles them to dryness.

Laundry wasn't always this easy.

The old ringerwasher used much less water, since the water was used for several loads of laundry until it was dark colored before it was changed.

Excess water was squeezed out by putting the clothes through the wringer, which sometimes caused water to squirt around the laundry area from pockets that were still filled with water.

The wringer rollers could prove to be a pain producing item if the lady reaching across the rollers allowed her upper body to come in contact with the wringer rollers. OUCH! In the summer the clothes were hung on the clothes line in the yard. Frequently birds would drop their excrement load on some clothes items causing frustration, since the poo then needed to be washed out of those items of laundry. The clothes were taken from the lines as soon as they were dry because the clothing items, especially men's overhauls, seemed to be an attractive place to start a nest.

Winter time clothes drying involved draping clothes lines across the living room.

The living room was chosen because most of our time was spent either in the kitchen or bedroom. You had no TV, so if there wasn't any visitors coming, the lines could stay up until the next washing. The overhauls were

still hung on the outside clothes line. They were attached to the line by bending the cuffs over the line and simply pinning them to the line. Since they were wet when attached to the line, they immediately froze. I think that they were put outside because the inside clothes lines were fully used up.

When the inside lines became available, the overhaul cuffs were pried from the outside line, carried into the house as one would carry a board, and hung on the inside lines.

One of the disadvantages of heating with wood was the lack of moisture in the inside air.

Cold air in this area seems to be dryer air and when it is heated by the wood stove, it becomes even more dry. Frequently a water container was left on the stove to create some inside moisture. This didn't completely improve the dry air, but every little bit helps.

In winter, the home usually had an odor of wood smoke. The folks living in the house didn't notice it until they came into the house from outside. Sometimes a statement was made that it smells like home. The laundry drying in the house seemed to give a sweeter smell and definitely increased the humidity in the house. Both of these additions helped by giving a small change to the winter doldrums.

In a time when there was no phone in the house, limited radio usage and no TV, those that lived in the house were more aware of small changes. I believe that being aware of more of the small things in our lives is more comfortable than concerns about big things that one can't change anyway.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I read a story some time ago about a woman who was very tired at the end of the day, and yet it didn’t seem like she got anything done.

She had a mental note of the things she needed to get done that day, so she got started. After she woke and had a shower and breakfast, she grabbed the garbage and made her way outside to take the garbage out, on the way, however, she noticed the laundry that had to be folded.

So, she put the garbage down and started to fold the laundry, she had just started and realized that the laundry basket was still in the laundry room so she went to get it but, on her way, she realized the dog had not been fed….

And so, her day went. All day long, she became distracted, and nothing got done.

I believe we all get that way in our life.

John Claude Terwilliger

John Claude Terwilliger was born on December 13, 1950, in Long Prairie, Minnesota to Lawrence and Lillian (Hineline) Terwilliger.

He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1969 and attended Alexandria Technical School for Carpentry. John started working for a construction company in Brainerd and built his home in Garrison. He later built his parent’s home on Fairy Lake in Sauk Centre.

John then worked for a time at Spanier Cabinets out of Melrose, before starting his own company with JCT Construction, with his main focus being on custom cabinetry. He built his home and shop on his property north of Melrose.

John’s life work was woodworking, and he was very detailed in his craft and was known for being a perfectionist.

John loved spearing and was a member of the Dark House and Angling Association. He also enjoyed deer hunting and was a life member of the Deer Hunters Chapter in Sauk Centre. John was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre and was honored to make the altar, pulpit and lectern that are still being used today. One of his favorite memories was taking an Alaskan Cruise trip to Alaska with his girls.

John died on Sunday, January 2, 2022, at his home in rural Melrose at the age of 71. He is survived by his daughters, Kristie Terwilliger of Hoffman and Kelly (Ryan Abbott) Terwilliger of Kemah, TX; grandsons, Liam, Tanner and Trevin; brother, Glen Terwilliger of Sauk Centre; sister, Karin Wessel of Sauk Rapids and many nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Lillian; and sister, Ila Stepniak.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church.

A live stream and recording of the service will be available 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 8, on the funeral home website www.royhetland. com.

Margaret Emily (Molly) Frank passed away peacefully in her sleep under hospice care at Center Care nursing home on December 20.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Norbert (Spic) and Eileen Frank and her brother John and brotherin law, Thomas Godzala. She leaves behind her sisters Beth (Tom) Carstens and Bridget (Tom) Godzala and one brother, Matthew (Kathie) Frank. In addition, Molly had nine nieces and nephews.

At one time, Molly knew everyone in town and they knew her. She loved babies and always bought gifts for them. She possessed an uncanny knack for remembering everyone's birthday and anniversary.

May our sister rest in peace, enjoying the rewards she deserves.

Memorials are preferred to CenterCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

Leslie "Snuffy" E. Smith

Leslie "Snuffy" E. Smith, 70 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls.

Leslie Edward Smith was born on April 12, 1951 in Little Falls, MN to the late Leslie O. and Dorothy (Turner) Smith. He graduated from Swanville High School in 1970 and then attended Staples Vo-Tech school. Snuffy worked at Long Prairie Packing and then at Larson Boats until they closed their Little Falls plant in 2012. His interests included collecting coins, reading books and watching westerns. Snuffy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He took a couple of trips down to Oklahoma to visit his sister.

Snuffy is survived by his sister, Dorothy “Dotty” Baum of Swanville; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie O. and Dorothy Smith; sisters, Yvonne Koester, Joyce Fritz and Elaine Sutton.

Pamela "Pam" Lehnen

Pamela "Pam" (Brickweg) Lehnen, 48 year old resident of Rice, MN, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, January 7, 2022, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton, MN, with Father Greg Sauer officiating, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the church, and again from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the mass.

Pamela Lynn Brickweg was born on April 22, 1973, in Melrose, MN, to Jim and Joni ”Gerads” Brickweg. She graduated high school from Holdingford in 1991. Pam married Jay Lehnen on July 31, 1999, they later divorced but remained lifelong friends. Pam’s love for people found her working for various hospitality businesses: Bo Diddley’s, The Creamery, Jordie’s Trail Side Café, and Cornerstone. Pam’s love for the elderly took her to her final job at the Country Manor. Pam enjoyed any type of board game she could get you to play with her, ice fishing, her Snoopy collection, the color pink and soaking up the sun rays, making gingerbread houses with her nieces & nephew, and Christmas was always a special season for her. Pam was very thoughtful and kind with a soft spot for the elderly and animals. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and for the kindness she showed for others.

Pam is survived by her son, Tate Lehnen of Rice, MN; former husband, Jay Lehnen, Rice, MN; parents Jim and Joni Brickweg of Backus, MN; brother, Randy (Angie) Brickweg of Pine River, MN; her nieces, Elsie and Nola; and nephew Eli; and many dear relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her nephew, Terry Brickweg; grandparents, Frank and Jeanette Brickweg, William and Erma Gerads; and her beloved dog, Uh-Oh. Memorials can be given to any alcohol addiction program of your choice in Pam’s memory. May she rest in peace.

Joseph Thomas Korman

Joseph Thomas Korman was born December 29, 1924 in Holding Township to Anton and Margaret (Kosel) Korman. A one room schoolhouse provided his e l e m e n t a r y education and he then graduated from Holdingford High School. He joined the Army Air Corps and was trained to be a cryptographer. He spent the remainder of his service at Westover Field, Holy Oak, MA, and later retired as a World War II veteran. Joe married the love of his life, Angeline (Angie) Binek, on April 23, 1946 at St. Columbkille Church in St. Wendel, MN. The couple purchased their farm near Elmdale in 1950, raised four children and made it their family home for many years. Joe is fondly remembered as a devoted dairy farmer who loved the land and his animals. After retiring from farming in 1983, Joe continued to be active as a school bus driver. He served 12 years on the Upsala School Board and was also a lifelong member of the Upsala American Legion. He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church where he and Angie sang in the choir for over 50 years.

He enjoyed spending time with his family as well as polka music and dancing, playing cards, and a weekly trip to the casino.

Joe is survived by his children: Linda Langer of Rice, MN; Arlene (Tim) Heisick of Westminster, CO; Wayne (Brenda) Korman of Rice, MN; and Ron (Joyce) of Bowlus, MN; ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Siblings Art of St. Cloud, MN; Lorene Krupa of Coon Rapids, MN; and Geraldine (Art) Bialka of Sauk Rapids, MN. Joe is preceded in death by his loving wife, Angie; son-in-law, Alex Langer; parents; brothers and sisters: Robert, Walter, Claude, Alexander, Raymond, George, Isabelle Fabeck, and Marie Pierskalla.

A private family funeral was held on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Helen S. Banal, age 97 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, December 31, 2021 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Helen Skilling was born November 18, 1924 in Windom, Minnesota to Charles and Marie (Saunders) Skilling. She graduated from Windom High School in 1942 and began work as a teller in the First National Bank of Windom.

In 1945 she married Doyle Hanson in Windom.

They owned and operated a hardware store until Doyle’s failing health and death forced them to sell the store and she returned to work at the First National Bank.

In 1958 she married Dr. Henry Banal in Windom and they moved to Sauk Centre where he and Dr. C.W. Brown founded the Sauk Centre Veterinary Clinic where she was employed as a bookkeeper.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Christian Mothers, Sauk Centre Seniors, VFW Auxiliary, and knitting groups. She was an avid knitter, reader, and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Survivors include her children, Mary Ellen (Michael) Sauser of Pine City, Thomas (Karen) Banal of Sauk Centre, Susan (Andrew Tanick) Banal of Minnetonka, and Mark Banal of Hopkins; and grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle (Toby), and Christopher (Bella) Banal, and Talia Tanick.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Henry Banal son, Dominic Banal; parents; first husband, Doyle Hanson; stepfather, Al Rammer; sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Jerry Sogge; and niece, Mary Anne Baker.

Memorials are preferred to Place of Hope in St. Cloud.

You know, new cars, old cars and in-between cars all have one thing in common — they’ll need repairs at some point. Fixing your car is just a basic part of car ownership, and something every car owner should be prepared for.

When life happens, to your vehicle or anything else, an emergency fund acts like an airbag. Only instead of keeping your face from hitting the dashboard, it keeps your finances from getting smashed up. When it comes to car repair costs, I advise creating a sinking fund in your budget. A sinking fund is a special place

in your budget where you save up money for specific, big ticket items — like car repairs.

I know, stuffing money into a sinking fund each month sounds about as enjoyable as waiting in line at the DMV. But look at it this way, if you had a car loan like most people, you’d be putting hundreds toward that debt each month. Instead, you’re one of the smart ones who doesn’t have any debt and can easily create a repair fund for your car by setting aside less than the average car payment each month. Even “reliable” cars need repairs and maintenance, and a sinking fund within your budget for this sort of thing means you’re ready to handle virtually any auto issues that pop up.

You know you’ll need to pay for repairs and maintenance. It’s a thing with all cars.

And when you know something’s coming, that’s not an emergency fund situation. Great question, Ashleigh!

Every car I have ever purchased has had them and it has even been a deal breaker for me when shopping for a car if it did not have them. I use my heaters year-round unless it is too warm out.

My driver side seat heater just failed on my Cadillac and or course it is 2 months out of factory warranty. They would love to replace it for me at a charge of $800.00 and that’s just not going to happen. I am not ready to purchase a new car, but I want my seat heater to work. Is there anything I can do to get it going again?

Good thing that there are alternatives out there. You could check with your local recycled parts place, AKA Salvage Yard, and they may have an entire working seat for you that will match your interior, or you could look into an aftermarket heater. Seat heaters are a great accessory for anyone who has a seat to sit on. Cars, trucks, tractors, they all can be equipped with heaters usually at a much lower price than a replacement factory unit. Check your local car stereo shops or accessory installation dealer to see if they offer them.

You can do without air conditioning, you can spend the money for new lines, you could block off the rear lines and just use the front A/C, or you can repair the lines you have. There are A/C line repair kits out in the market that not all shops have but the ones that do will be able to cut out the damaged section and splice in a new one.

You can also have a rear delete kit installed.

Either one will be a large savings over having the entire line set replaced.

Burnhamville Township • November 30, 2021 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held November 30, 2021 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of October 26, 2021 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and second by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received notices of a Planning and Zoning hearing, information on Mons Lake and Bass Lake Accesses improvements, additional APRA check received, weed control grant offer, county weed inspection form, ARPA funding project ideas and a request for information to take over another private road.

A motion was made by Sup. Muellner to pay all bills numbered 6170 through 6179: Rev. $592.23; R& B $7,827.43. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The clerk will look into ARPA funding expenses including computers for the board and check into other funding.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve Resolution #2021-02 Designating Township Polling Place as the Burtrum Community Center, as required by Minnesota State Statute.

Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed. Resolution is on file in the clerk’s office.

The county notified the townships of a state grant for weed control projects. The board would like to apply to get sprayer and equipment to control specific areas of noxious weeds that keep appearing. The deadline is December 4 and clerk will apply.

In the road report the contractor completed 321st Ave and Ermine projects. He will work on cleaning up roads before freeze up.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $69,454.84. Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

Board was informed that the Swanville Rural Fire Association fire chief has changed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:42 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, December 28 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the November Senior High Student of the Month, senior Shane Lambrecht.

Shane is the son of Mike and Julie Lambrecht. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

Shane plans to attend college but is unsure of which college as of yet. He participates in many school activities, including being in the school play in grades seven through ten. He is a three-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball and baseball since seventh grade. He also added trapshooting to his resume as a freshman. His achievements include consistently being on the A Honor Roll, student of the month previously, athlete of the month in all of his sports, both the ExCel and AAA award male representative for Swanville Schools and All Conference Academic for football in grades ten through twelve, All Conference honorable mention for football and baseball.

Kerry Osberg, Art Instructor says, “Shane is an excellent student and an allaround good person! I have really enjoyed having Shane in my art classes over the past few years. He has always shown great initiative and creativity when it comes to completing his art projects. He is very kind and considerate and he never hesitates to help out his classmates with their work! Shane is the kind of student that makes being a teacher all that more rewarding. I just know he will go on to do great things!”

Shane’s favorite thing about school is spending time with friends and playing sports. He advises other students to “be responsible, but have fun.” Outside of school Shane is active in helping with SAB (Swanville Athletic Boosters) activities.

Social Studies teacher Tom Bzdok adds, “Shane is very deserving of this recognition. He is a very mature young man who has always been impressive with his untiring work ethic and desire to achieve the highest standards. He comes to class every day with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. Shane never seems to be bothered by anything and always seems to be in a good mood. He always seems to have a smile on his face and greets you in a friendly way.

Shane is able to remove himself from negative distractions and has an energetic personality that makes him easy to talk with.

Congratulations Shane!”

Great River Regional Library is excited to announce that the library system will go Fines Free in 2022!

With this change, no fines will accrue on overdue materials! All 33 library locations will be free, open, and welcoming to all. With the help of the library’s generous donors, we can remove the financial barrier of fines to allow everyone to explore, learn, and connect in their community.

Starting on January 3rd, 2022, Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will be eliminating overdue fines on checked out library materials.

This initiative began back in 2019 with the elimination of overdue fines on children and teen materials. Through research conducted nationwide, along with local research conducted by St. Cloud State University Survey Center and GRRL’s user/non-user surveys, we have identified transportation and finances to be the biggest barriers to the people that need library services the most. For those who rely on transportation by the public or a parent, returning materials in a timely manner can be difficult. Then when fines begin to accrue after the due date, it becomes another expense for a family. Being mindful of our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, we are working to eliminate this barrier for families in central Minnesota.

Great River Regional Library is a joint powers organization with six member counties of Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, and Wright. Each county provides representatives for the GRRL Board of Trustees and the Board develops and administers one comprehensive budget for the system. The 2022 budget supports the expansion of the library’s fines free initiatives. These fines are a declining revenue source and make up only 1% of the budget. They are neither guaranteed nor reliable, therefore the Board moved forward with the effort.

The goal of this expansion is to reduce the financial barrier that may prevent patrons from accessing library materials, and to increase the amount of time our staff spend assisting library users in a positive way. Library cardholders are responsible for returning or renewing their checked out materials by the due date so other patrons can enjoy them. Libraries across the country that have already done away with overdue fines have not seen a drastic increase in items returned late upon going Fines Free. Chicago Public Library actually saw a 240 percent increase in returned books in the month after they eliminated fines in September of 2019, and Salt Lake City’s Public Library saw late returns drop from 9 percent to 4 percent after fines were eliminated.
