Dig your well before you’re thirsty -By Harvey Mackay If I had to name the single characteristic shared by all the truly successful people I’ve met over a lifetime, I’d say it is the ability to create and nurture a network of contacts.

Although I never met David Rockefeller, he certainly would have fit in this category. When he passed away in March 2017 at the age of 101, “Bloomberg News” revealed that he had an “electronic Rolodex” of 150,000 people. “The Wall Street Journal” recently reported it was 200,000. He was a master networker during his 24 years as the head of Chase Manhattan

In my corporate speeches, I often ask the question: What is one of the most important words in the English language? I add that if all of us understood this word just a little bit better, we’d be way more successful than we already are. That word is “Rolodex,” which of course is now referred to as a contact management system.

My father, Jack Mackay, who for 35 years headed of the Associated Press in St. Paul, Minnesota, shared his secret with me when I was 18. He said, “Harvey, every single person you meet the rest of your life should go in your Rolodex file. Write a little bit about that person on the bottom or the back of the card. And now, here’s the key – find a creative way to keep in touch.”

That’s what I’ve been doing ever since. I now have nearly 20,000 names in my electronic Rolodex file, a far cry from David Rockefeller, but still crucial to my career. The contacts I’ve made over all these years are why I’ve been writing this nationally syndicated column for the last 24 years.

My Rolodex was instrumental in launching my publishing career. Let me explain. In 1988, there were roughly two million “wannabes,” people who wrote manuscripts. Roughly 200,000 books got published. Of those only a small percentage were business books.

If you’re a first-time, unknown author like me and you write a business book, you want to get it published. All the

major publishers will print 10,000 hardcover books. That’s it. Tom Peters, “In Search of Excellence,” 10,000 copies; Ken Blanchard, “The OneMinute Manager,” 7,500 books.

This is why it was so tough to get started. There were 5,000 bookstores back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, which means an average of only two books per store if they print 10,000 copies.

I had written a book titled “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.” I wanted the publisher to print a lot of books so they would promote it and not run out of books. I scheduled a summit meeting with William Morrow and Company – the CEO, President and VP of National Sales. About 45 minutes into the meeting I asked for the order. I said, “I would like you to seriously consider printing 100,000 hardcover copies of ‘Swim With the Sharks.’ We were on the 37th floor, and they basically told me to jump. The VP of National Sales closed his notebook and said, “Thank you very much, Mr. Mackay. Obviously, we’re not going to get together.” Then he basically screamed, “Who are you coming in here asking for 100,000 copies? We only print 10,000 copies for any firsttime unknown author.”

I’d brought in two humongous brief cases and took them out. Inside were two huge Rolodex files, 6,500 names at the time. I started to go through them: “Pillsbury, 18,000 employees. We do business with them. Maybe they’ll read the book and pass it along. General Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Scandinavian Foods

When the Europeans moved into our part of Minnesota, they usually settled in an area which had already been populated by families that were from the same area in Europe they had come from.

The geographic surroundings were often similar to the area they came from. For example, the northern part of Europe was primarily covered with trees, hills and small fields. When these families moved here, the only thing missing was being close to the ocean and the fish which came from it. They still were able to find fish for their diet and they also brought many favorite recipes with them.

I grew up enjoying foods of the German influence, but my spouse grew up with Swedish food influence.

Although there was only 60 miles between our original homes, I experienced some hesitation when originally tasting the unfamiliar foods.

I was familiar with Herring, but they also ate Lutefisk. I never was able to appreciate the smell, texture or taste of that stuff (neither could my wife). They ate a really special treat called tetmaerk, which was a custard made of milk from a newly freshened cow. This tasted OK, but it wasn’t a food that I have craved over the last 40 years.

They also ate Klub. This was a dumpling made of boiled potatoes, small pieces of ham mixed with the potato, flour and little bit of egg to hold it together. This dumpling was then heated in ham broth. This made a great meal when served with fresh home-made bread. My father-in-law frequently made mush when we came home at noon. It was milk, flour, salt and butter, boiled and eaten with brown sugar and cream. It was good, quite filling, but better the next day when it was sliced and fried in butter.

Their blood sausage was similar to the blood sausage I grew up with, but they used raisins and a few unfamiliar spices. This was one of the few foods, which were not white. It appeared that if the food wasn’t white, there must be cream put in it to make it lighter. For example, Swedish Meatballs needed a light colored gravy, coffee needs cream, sweet potatoes need marshmallows on top and jello needs whipped cream on it. The whiter, the better.

They ate something called Swedish Kringle. A thin sweet crust, covered with a mixture of eggs, sugar, butter and a little flour and baked. Then covered with a white, powdered sugar frosting with almond flavoring. Really a good thing.

They also made lefsa, from boiled potatoes and flour, rolled thin and very lightly fried. They were then covered with almost anything sweet and are considered really tasty, since you tasted

the sweet covering.

Another ethnic, primarily Christmas treat are Rosettes and Krumkake. Both of these treats require special tools. I think that the recipe for both of these items are familiar, except that the Rosette recipe is more liquid. The Rosettes are fried in oil and the Krumkake is made in a flat iron similar to a waffle iron. Since they are both Scandinavian inspirations, they then have powdered sugar sprinkled over them. They are great when served with coffee.

When the immigrants came here, they brought along their language, beliefs, methods and recipes. The older generation held primarily to these basic methods, but as years passed the new generation adopted the “new ways” and the “old ways” were forgotten. Should we just leave these methods fade away and be forgotten?

Obituaries Edith Kutter

Edith Kutter, age 99, passed away in the loving arms of her daughter Carol, Thursday, December 28th, 2017, at Country Manor in Sartell.

A celebration of her life was held at the United Methodist Church, in Grey Eagle, Minnesota on Wednesday, January 3rd. Inurnment was at the Lakeview Cemetery following the service.

Edith was born February 22, 1918 in Burnhamville Township, to George and Rose (Noyes) Harris. She married Ralph T. Kutter on December 10th, 1938 in Grey Eagle. The couple raised their family on a farm on the north shore of Big Birch Lake.

Edith was passionate about many things in life, but first and foremost was her family and circle of friends.

After Edith and Ralph retired from farming, they moved across the street to

their lake home. Edith took great pride in knowing her history, especially as it related to people and events on Big Birch.

In addition to her noted culinary skills, she was a talented decorator, and seamstress, who enjoyed crocheting and embroidery.

Knowing Edith meant also knowing Kraemer, her constant K-9 companion for 15 years. She and that loveable miniature schnauzer were inseparable.

Edith is survived by her children Lee (Gay), Robert (Nancy), Michael (Janine) Kutter, all of Grey Eagle, and Carol (Roger) Lahr of Sartell. Six grandchildren, Amy Hinman, Peg Tenney, Dan, Jason and Michael Kutter, and Matthew Everding; multiple great and great, greatgrandchildren along with many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Thomas, husband Ralph, and sisters Carol Thompson, Bessie Young, Lillian Kutter, and Hazel Peschel.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or her church, Grey Eagle United Methodist Church.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Henry “Hank” Kostreba H e n r y “Hank” Kostreba, 83 year old resident of Opole died Sunday, December 31 at his home in Opole.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 6 at 12 noon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. A visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the hour of the service on Saturday. The military rites will be conducted by the Bowlus American Legion Post #642. The burial will be held in the parish cemetery.

Henry Kostreba was born December 13, 1934 to Paul and Monica (Beam) Kostreba in Opole, MN. He grew up in the Opole area and attended and graduated from Holdingford High School with the class of 1953. Henry served his country in the United Sates Army from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1957. He returned

to Minnesota and was united in marriage to Darlene Lange on August 25, 1958 in St. Francis, MN. The couple made their home in Opole. Henry worked in the Engineering department for the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud for 35 years retiring in 1990. He did not stop working for the next 40 years he worked for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Opole digging graves, cutting grass and removing snow. Henry also worked for Polar Tank as a parts runner for 10 years in Opole. He was a member of the Bowlus American Legion Post #642 and was the post commander for fourteen years, former member of the Catholic War Veterans in Opole and the Holdingford Sportsman’s Club. He treasured his fishing trips up north, deer hunting, playing cribbage, listening to polka music, trips to Branson, MO and spending time with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 59 years, Darlene Kostreba of Opole; children, Thomas Kostreba of Gillette, WY, William (Brenda) Kostreba of Holdingford, Lori Ann (Jeff) Jarnot of Rice, Kristi Kostreba (Shawn Schumacher) of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Bradley (Ashley) Jarnot, Brittany Jarnot (Paul Welle), Kaylee (Zane Humphries), Paul Kostreba and Cassidy Kostreba; greatgrandchildren, Brayden Jarnot, Adalynn Jarnot, Brielle Welle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marcella Thompson.

Leo A. Meyer, age 92 of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, December 29, 2017 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Inurnment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Leo Anthony Meyer was born on August 9, 1925 in Meire Grove, Minnesota, to Aloys and Elizabeth (Nietfeld) Meyer.

He was fourth of ten children. He was united in marriage to Janice Josephine Schulte on October 18, 1952. They had nine daughters.

He worked as a supervisor at Kraft Foods in Melrose until he retired after 35 years. Leo was a member of the Knights of Columbus and sold Knights of Columbus insurance after retiring from Kraft. He was always a farmer at heart and had many part-time jobs over the years which included milk testing for DHIA, raising pigs for market in two hog barns, and he was involved with two farms raising turkeys.

Hinnenkamp, 89, originally of Melrose will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Clearwater. Art passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Mother of Mercy Assisted Living in Albany. Reverend Dennis Backer will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.

Catholic Church in Melrose where he sang in the choir for many years and was a Eucharistic Minister.

He enjoyed hunting of every kind (pheasant, duck, deer). His first deer was almost a record breaker and was mounted.

His hunting included Minnesota, Kansas, and the Dakotas. He had a passion for fishing, dancing, playing cards, inventing, and spending time with the family. He enjoyed time in his big garden and grew lots of rhubarb which he shared with friends, relatives, and the Eagles Nest in Sauk Centre. Leo and Jan had many great times over the years at their cabin on Big Birch Lake and at their winter home in Pharr, Texas. He will be truly missed.

Leo is survived by his wife, Janice of Melrose; daughters, Linda (Russ) Braegelmann of Melrose, Lou (Mark) Rieland of Frederic, Wisconsin, Mary Jo (Mark) Humbert, of Glenwood, Peg (Bruce) Becker of Alexandria, Marie Meyer of Melrose, Jill (Jay) Meyer of Lakeville, Paula (Mark) Postudensek of Ham Lake, and Lori Carbajal of Blaine; 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren with two on the way; brothers, Arnold (Mary Ann) Meyer of Sauk Centre, Aloys “Red” Meyer of Melrose, David (Jane) Meyer of Sauk Centre, and Bernard (Rosie) Meyer of Sauk Centre; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloys and Elizabeth Meyer; Jan’s parents, Alphonse and Irma Schulte; daughter, Joyce Elizabeth Meyer; sisters, Anna Meyer and Marcella Lawler; brothers, James, Polycarp, and Alban Meyer; brother-in-law, Frank Lawler; and sisters-in-law, Julie, Fernalyce, and Arlene Meyer, and Joyce Schulte.

Jerry ‘Doc’ Laumeyer Jerry ‘Doc’ Laumeyer, age 56 of Long Prairie, MN passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. A Celebration of Life took place Tuesday evening, Jan. 2, 2018 at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis, with a service beginning at 7 pm.

Jerome Paul Laumeyer was born on June 24, 1961 in South St. Paul, MN to Anthony and Loretta (Downs) Laumeyer.

He moved with his family to a farm near Long Prairie as a boy and graduated in 1981 from Long Prairie High School.

After graduation, Jerry continued to help farm with his family and also worked at the Long Prairie Packing plant. He was later hired by Crestliner Boat Company in Little Falls, MN and worked in the Painting

Adeline K. Christen

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Adeline K. Christen, age 91 of Albany, was held Wednesday, January 3 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Adeline died S a t u r d a y, December 30, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Adeline was born July 7, 1926 in Melrose to Dorathea and Conrad “Connie” Petermeier. She graduated from Melrose High School and met Norbert Christen at the New Munich Ballroom. Adeline worked in Minneapolis during WWII and then married Norbert on May 5, 1945 in St. Stephens Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

He would race in the snow during the winter or on grass in the summers. He loved speed and testing the limits of his machines. Other activities Doc enjoyed included four wheeling and gardening. He looked forward to putting up many canned goods from his garden each fall. Whatever the activity, Jerry had his buddy, a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua cross, Cujo by his side.

He is survived by his mother, Loretta Laumeyer of Osakis; brothers, Jeff Laumeyer of Dundee, NY, Greg Laumeyer of Long Prairie, Tim (Oksana) Laumeyer of Osakis and Scott Laumeyer of St. Cloud and sister, Becky Laumeyer of Osakis; many nieces and nephews.

He preceded in death by his father, Anthony Laumeyer.

Jerry’s final act was to give the gift of life through organ/tissue donation.

Two large donations kickstart plans for Well-Being Center in Long Prairie Plans are underway to construct a 12,000-square-foot, $4.5-million Regional Community Well-Being Center located adjacent to the new hospital and clinic in Long Prairie.

CentraCare Health will contribute $1.3 million to this project with the remaining balance coming from a $3.2 million capital campaign.

Two donors have already come forward with large gifts.

Tom Rosen, CEO of Rosen’s Diversified, Inc. (RDI) and Chairman of RDI’s philanthropic arm, The Rosen Family Foundation has pledged $250,000 to the Well-Being Center. This foundation also provided a $500,000 gift for the medical campus capital campaign in 2016.

The Rosen Family Foundation served as a catalyst for an anonymous donor to pledge $500,000. This donor is now challenging the community to raise an additional $500,000 in matching funds.

This innovative community facility will include a community/outpatient physical therapy gym and warm-water therapy pool, locker rooms, showers, fitness studio and wellness demonstration kitchen. The hospital’s Rehabilitation Department will be relocated to the Well-Being Center as well.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, rural Americans are more likely to die from heart disease, cancer, unintentional injury, chronic lower respiratory disease and stroke than their urban counterparts.

New Farm & Rural Helpline is on call The Minnesota Department of Agriculture recently established a Farm and Rural Helpline, a resource Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, said could help those facing a variety of challenges in Greater Minnesota.

The MDA created this helpline as a one-stop-shop of sorts for farmers to access to get referrals for mental health services, financial counseling, legal help and other resources that stressed farmers may be seeking.

“People can start to feel like it is the world against them when financial and emotional strains mount,” Anderson said. “As a farmer myself, I am familiar with how the ups and downs of the ag industry can weigh on someone. The big thing for people to know is that help is available if they pick up the phone, but they have to take that first step. I hope people will find this new service to be helpful.”

Warnings about possible problems surround us wherever we go or whatever we do. Sometimes they seem to get in the way of life. But warnings are important to warn us of impending dangers.

Psalm 91 reminds us of the unpredictability, yet the certainty, of dangers that await us. But it does not do so to frighten us, but to give the assurance that we are safe at all times and in all situations because of the faithfulness of our God. Listen as the Psalmist assures of the safety and security we have in God: “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that strikes at midday... if you make the Most High your dwelling!”

How gracious of our God to assure us that we do not need to ask Him to “check on us” - He does it constantly.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Do you have a guideline ratio for mortgage debt to income?

-Levon Dear Levon, When it comes to buying a home, I always tell people to get a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, with monthly payments that are no more than 25 percent of their take home pay. This type of mortgage is the only debt I don’t beat up people for having. Still, I urge folks to pay off these loans in less than 15 years.

The average person following my plan pays off this type of loan in about seven or eight years. That’s a pretty big deal in terms of your financial security.

And paying extra on your mortgage doesn’t have to be a strain. You can start by simply rounding up your payments.

If the payment is $770, make it $800 instead, and apply the extra to the principal balance. If you want to get more intense, you could make an extra house payment each quarter, or go the route of bi-weekly payments. To do this, simply make half a monthly payment every two weeks. By the end of the year you’ll have made 13 payments instead of 12. This will knock years off the length of your loan.

Remember, your income is your largest wealth building tool. It’s so much easier to save, invest, and give when all your money isn’t flying out the door to make payments!

-Don Dear Don, No, I do not. I also don’t recommend oil or corn futures. All of these are examples of commodities, and the commodities market is extremely volatile. In addition to the market being wildly volatile, the prices on commodities isn’t based on actual production. It’s based largely on a supply and demand curve. If there’s a shortage on one of them, the price shoots up.

For example, when you’re talking about gold and silver, there’s more demand than supply when the economy is bad. In this kind of scenario, people are fearful and lots of them run to buy gold. This drives up the price to unrealistically high levels.

Again, the price on a commodity isn’t based on anything other than fear or greed, and a supply and demand curve. The prices aren’t based on an actual production of income, like it is with stocks or real estate. I don’t buy commodities at all, especially gold and silver. I don’t recommend you buy them, either.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office December 29, 2017: At 09:24 David Oliver, 71 from Swanville reported he had hit a deer on County Road 38 near County Road 11 west of Long Prairie with his 2006 Dodge truck. The truck had damage to the front driver side front, Oliver was not injured in the accident.

December 29, 2017: At 19:44 there was a report of a car deer crash on County Road 10 just west of US 71 intersection. Joshua Thomas age 28 of Long Prairie was traveling eastbound on County Road 10 when he had struck multiple deer causing damage to his 2007 GMC Sierra. No injuries were reported.

December 30, 2017: At 04:15 there was a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a mailbox. William Stone age 19 of Melrose was traveling southbound on Almond Drive in his 2006 Lincoln Towncar when he had slid sideways striking a mailbox causing damage. No injuries were reported. Stone was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

December 30, 2017: At 21:40 there was a report of a one vehicle property damage accident near the address of 11106 Almond Drive. Alexis Friedrichs of rural Grey Eagle was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on Almond Drive when she lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and came to rest in the west ditch of Almond Drive.

Friedrichs was not injured. The vehicle had to be towed from the ditch.

December 31, 2017: At 07:13 a theft from a fish house which was on Lilly Lake was reported near Sauk Centre.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Dept.

December 29, 2017: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired at a residence in Swanville Township. Investigators from the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and spoke to witnesses present. No one inside the residence was injured. Investigators located a window that had been shot through from outside the home and were advised by witnesses that 4 individuals left the scene in a Chevy Impala vehicle. One of the suspects was later located in the City of Flensburg.

Through the course of the investigation, investigators were able to locate the suspect vehicle in the City of Browerville, located in Todd County. A search warrant for the residence in Browerville was then obtained for 30940 Hwy. 71.

The Morrison County SWAT Team was activated and responded to the residence.

Other individuals who were not associated with the shooting were present inside the residence and were arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

The following suspects were arrested

by The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office and are awaiting formal charges stemming from the shooting incident: -Shawn Steffansen, 36 year-old from Taylor, Minnesota -Anthony Pistachio, 49 year-old from Iona, Minnesota -Ashley Richardson, 30 year-old from Iona, Minnesota The Todd County Sheriff’s Office took 2 individuals into custody for controlled substance offences to include: -William Giroux, 36 year-old, from St. Cloud, Minnesota -Kayla Pistachio-Fuller, 27 year-old, from Iona, Minnesota.

Pistachio-Fuller will also face charges connected to the shooting.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office believes that this was an isolated incident and there is no known danger to the public. The active investigation continues.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, The Little Falls Police Department and the Browerville Fire Rescue and Ambulance Service.

Talent Search on for Upsala’s Community Variety Show VIII

A talent search for the “finest and funnest” from the Upsala area is now underway to fill the program for the Upsala Community Variety Show VIII set for Sunday, February 11. A wide variety of acts are being sought, including musical numbers, skits, stunts, lip syncs, and dances. Four prizes will be awarded: $100 for “Best of Show,” $75 for second place, $50 for third, and $25 for fourth. Audience vote will determine the winners.

Limited to five minutes each, all performances must be in good taste and be appropriate for the entire family.

Both comedy and serious entries by area residents of all ages are welcome.

Applications are subject to audition to control quality and show length. All program decisions will be made by the Variety Show Program Committee.

Signup deadline is January 29.

The Community Variety Show VIII is a fundraiser for the Upsala High School Band to help cover costs of their spring trip to Florida. Two identical performances will be presented in the Upsala Auditorium at 2:00 PM and 6:30 PM. Participants need to be available for both performances as well as a dress rehearsal on Saturday, February 10 at

6:30 PM. Tickets will be available for purchase from band students beginning January 15.

Upsala’s first Community Variety Show, sponsored by the UP*TEAM, was held in February 2003 with great success and enjoyment. “Elvis” and his Upsalaires captured first place in a memorable Variety Show II in 2006. A pillow dance team won the 2008 “Best of Show” and in 2010 the “The Beached Boys” surfed their way to the honor.

The 2012 winners, a group of Upsala high school friends, called themselves “The No Name Band” and won the crowd over with a fun collection of love songs. In 2014 the Singing a pair of Johnny Cash’s most popular tunes, the “The Out of Towners Band” was the overwhelming crowd favorite in winning “Best of Show” with “Folsom Prison Blues.” In 2016, “Best of Show” was nabbed by 5th grader, Braedan Rene as he sang Andy Grammer’s, “It’s Good To Be Alive Right About Now (Hallelujah).

Tobacco companies forced to roll out court-ordered anti-smoking ads After nearly 20 years of litigation, tobacco companies must now run ads that showcase the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke and the manipulation of their products to create and sustain addiction. These court-ordered ads containing corrective statements will run on television for a year and in newspapers until March 2018. Additionally, the tobacco companies are required to post statements on their websites and cigarette packs several times during a two-year period.

Litigation began in 1999 when the U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against Philip Morris (now Altria), R.J. Reynolds and Lorillard. In 2006, U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler ordered the tobacco companies to publish corrective statements after an eight-month civil trial that revealed a conspiracy dating back to the 1950s to hide the harmful effects of smoking. In her ruling, Judge Kessler stated that the tobacco companies deceived the public, suppressed research and destroyed documents to protect their profits. Earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case, ending 11 years of appeals by the tobacco companies.

• Cigarette companies intentionally designed cigarettes with enough nicotine to create and sustain addiction.

• All cigarettes cause cancer, lung disease, heart attacks and premature death including those that are advertised as “lights,” “low tar,” “ultra lights” and “naturals.” There is no safe cigarette.

• Secondhand smoke kills more than 38,000 Americans each year.

• There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

In Minnesota, tobacco companies spend more than $115 million annually on advertising and marketing, much of it targeted to young people. As a result, tobacco use remains a persistent problem. “Whether it’s family, friends, coworkers or neighbors, tobacco leads to more than 6,300 deaths in Minnesota each year,” states Meghan Bown, coordinator with Crave the Change. “It is now the responsibility of the tobacco industry to show how they contributed to an addiction that has impacted us all in so many ways, be it through lives lost or economically.” Smoking costs Minnesota $3.19 billion annually in health care costs. For every pack sold, we lose an estimated $19.16 in health costs and productivity loss.
