According to Native American folklore, long ago during the time when the salmon swam up the Cheakamus River to spawn, the people of the Squamish Nation would fish and store their catch for the coming winter.

One day, a man came to the river and cast his net into the water hoping to catch something for dinner. Within minutes he had enough fish to feed his family through the following spring. He packed his catch in cedar baskets and prepared to haul them away.

As he started to leave, he looked to the river and became unsatisfied with the abundance he already possessed. He cast his net into the water once more and pulled out another bounty of salmon.

He emptied his net onto the shore and admired his second catch. He now had enough fish to feed two more families until the spring.

Instead of leaving, the man wondered just how many fish the river would give to him. He tossed his net into the water for a third time. He pulled it back in and found that it was tangled and filled with sticks, river stones and muck.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Christmas Changes When I think about Christmas in the past, there always seems to be snow.

Christmas Eve was clear and cold. The ride to church was very chilly, since we needed to make the scheduled time at church and that didn’t allow time to warm up the car. Little things like milking, calf feeding, cow bedding, hay feeding and milker washing needed to be done before we washed up and changed clothes.

Arrival at church was accompanied with a mixture of feelings. Since thanksgiving, every Sunday afternoon had been spent practicing for the Christmas Eve program. We practiced the songs, tried various movement sequences and were given our “pieces” that we must commit to memory, so that we could stand by ourselves in front of an over-filled church and recite perfectly- (now that made your knees shake and sinuses clear). Completion of the program was a great relief, followed by the distribution of “bags,” which was a paper bag with an orange, an apple and some nuts. Every year I would forget to take the fruit out of the bag and their moisture would enter the nut shells and make them soggy.

After church we would go to my grandparent’s house for a gift exchange, conversation and lunch. The earlier years were best, because after the gift exchange, the guys would gather in the kitchen and share thoughts about the latest gossip, the price of milk, who was offering the best price on dairy concentrate and a discussion about a new feed a neighbor was trying. In the years after a television appeared in their house, it was turned on and the guys watched a snow-covered picture of some church service in New York

accompanied by a few viewers taking short naps. I must say the TV screwed up Christmas Eve conversations at grandma’s. But since it was below zero, all the cars were started for at least 10 minutes before we went home. Nice!

About midnight lunch was served, which consisted of fresh home-made bread, Wisconsin brick cheese, cottage cheese, “huckfet”, cheese fish, herring, cookies, candy and fruitcake. Good stuff.

Herring as we knew it was purchased in square shaped gallon jars.

They included the entire fish, absent the intestines, preserved in salt water. The fish were processed in the kitchen by removing the head and fins, taking out the milt and egg sacks, washing the fish and cutting it into one inch chunks. The fish was then placed in a ceramic bowl, to which a pickling mixture of boiled water, vinegar, sugar, sliced dill pickles, onions and pickling spices were added.

This was set aside for a few days to meld flavors. The taste was really good, but you needed to eat around the skin and bones.

Huckfet was made of raw ground goose fat and skin, to which salt, pepper, onion and marjoram was added and refrigerated for a day. This mixture was spread on bread. Not something that would be approved by the USDA, but it was a truly, tasty, special treat.

Cheese fish, as I have discussed in earlier stories, is a mixture of prunes, raisins, cottage cheese, cinnamon, sugar and if possible mince meat. This filling was placed on a thin, 7 inch circle of sweet dough, with the edges folded and squeezed together on the outside edges to form a half-circle pillow. It was then dropped in hot lard until it begins to brown. Sprinkle the finished cheese fish with powdered sugar to be ready to serve. Many other nationalities have similar recipes, using meats or fruits as filling. However it’s done, it is good.

Fruitcake has acquired a bad name.

We all thought it was a real treat. I think that the old method of making fruit cake is what made it good. My mother and

turned away from the water. When he looked toward the last catch of salmon he’d left on the shore, he saw only piles of rocks in its place. When he checked his cedar baskets he found them filled with twigs and roots.

Then he noticed Wountie, the spirit protector of the river. Wountie spoke to the man and told him that his greed had broken the ring of harmony with the river – and that Nature expressed her displeasure by withholding her gifts to him.

The man returned home with empty baskets, haunted by the consequences of his actions. He would always remember that enough is more than plenty.

December 27: At approx. 18:23 the Sheriff’s office and Long Prairie Police Department responded to a car vs. semi accident on Hwy 71 and MN Fresh in Long Prairie. Jose Burciaga of Long Prairie was attempting to head South on Hwy. 71 out of the MN Fresh parking lot when he collided with a semi grain trailer, driven by Thomas Henrich, due to the icy conditions. Jose’s car had front end damage. The semi nor trailer had any reported damage. There were no injuries that occurred during the collision.

Obituaries Donald (Don) Weissman

Donald (Don) Weissman, ageless, left this earth on December 19, 2018, after a short hospital stay in McAllen, Texas, but he lives on in our memories and the life we were privileged to share with him for more than 20 years.

To describe him reads like a Personal Ad for a dating site: Loves his family, treats everyone with respect, enjoys golfing, fishing or just riding around in his pontoon, playing cards, sitting around a campfire, dancing.

He will be missed by Carole Austing, Scott and Sandy Austing (Spencer, Dominic, Hunter), Stacey and Nate Austing-Jacobson (Charlotte, Nicholas), Stephanie Austing (Morgan ((Chase)), Drew, Paige, and Lauren Kingston), Suzanne and Brad Kobilka

(Anna, Julia, Allison), and Stuart Austing.

His great smile and twinkly, mischievous eyes, and zest for life made him many friends over his 83 years on this earth. From his days growing up in Mandan, ND, then with his service in the Air Force, onto his long career with Honeywell, his retirement years spent in Pine City, and finally, moving to St. Cloud and Grey Eagle, MN, and spending winters in San Juan, TX for many years, he added friends who continue to miss him. We love you, Don. He is also survived by his former wife, Kathy Weissman, daughters, Lori O’Dowd and Sheree Hammond, and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two brothers and nieces and nephews.

Raymond W. “Ray” Eickhoff, age 94 of Albany, died peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Jennifer B. Montag, age 39 of Freeport, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 31 at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Jennifer Beth Bushman was born September 29, 1979 in Melrose, Minnesota to Wayne and Darleen (Poepping) Bushman.

She graduated from Albany High School in 1998 and continued her education at St. Cloud Vocational Technical College; graduating in 2000 as a surgical technician.

Jennifer was united in marriage to Jamie Montag on October 16, 2004 in Cold Spring.

Carl V. Butler, age 77 of Grey Eagle, formerly of Verndale, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 5 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in St. Frederick’s Catholic Cemetery in Verndale. Military honors will be provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Grey Eagle. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the church.

Carl Vincent Butler was born January 26, 1941 in Springfield, Illinois to John and Anna (Britz) Butler. He graduated from the Reisch American School of Auctioneering in 1959. Carl entered the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1963. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Maxfield on April 29, 1961 at St. Frederick’s Catholic Church in Verndale. After being discharged from the Navy, Carl started farming in Pawnee, Illinois. He moved to Atwater,

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions, Charter Member of the Burtrum Heritage Club, and the Todd County DFL. Carl enjoyed antique tractors, visiting with people, writing, traveling, fishing, and playing cards, especially pinochle.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Butler of Grey Eagle; children, Victoria (Mike) Belver of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Brenda (Timothy) Durheim of Valley City, North Dakota, Damon Butler (special friend, Cindy Shinabarger) of Melrose, Jarvis (Laura) Butler of Grey Eagle, Christina (Thomas) Berscheit of Grey Eagle, Chad (Judy) Butler of Grey Eagle, Amanda (Paul) Van Havermaet of Grey Eagle, Aaron Butler of Long Prairie, and Chelsea (Matthew) Wolbeck of Freeport; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with two on the way; brothers, John (Elizabeth) Butler of Clarissa, Patrick Butler of Menahga, and Bert (Geri) Butler of Verndale; and sisterin-law, Carol Boehland of Bertha.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Timothy Butler and Theodore “Ted” Butler; father and motherin-law, Fred and Emarita Maxfield; and brother-in-law, Roger Maxfield.

Edmond Geisenhof

F u n e r a l Services for E d m o n d Geisenhof will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie.

Interment will take place at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery.

Edmond passed away December 27, 2018.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 4, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.

Edmond was born October 19, 1945, in Long Prairie, to Charles & Edna (Koester) Geisenhof. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1963.

settled in Thief River Falls but spent their summers at Kermit’s farm place.

Hazel loved her garden at the farm along with all her flowers. Hazel was an excellent seamstress and also enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint. She would tell many stories of how she loved to dance, it didn’t matter to what kind of music! Hazel also loved to fish, but ice fishing was her favorite. She said she’d sit outside on a bucket while Kermit would sit in the car because it was too cold for him. Hazel always had a big smile on her face while telling that story. When Hazel wasn’t busy with all that, she and Kermit loved to travel, there isn’t a state they didn’t miss.

Hazel left this earth with her niece, Julie, by her side and surely Kermit had the car parked and was ready and waiting for her.

Survivors include her niece, Julie (Glen) Meyer of Freeport; great-nephews, Jordan (Angie) Meyer of Sartell, Jerome (Kayla) Meyer of Wadena, and Ryan Meyer of Hurlburt Field, Florida; greatniece, Mattie Meyer of Freeport; and greatgreat-niece, Brynnley Meyer of Wadena.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Edwin and Raymond Magnusen.

In September 1967, Edmond married Sharon Carstensen. In October 1983, he married Gloria Triebenbach. Edmond worked with his brother Steve for many years as co-owner/operator of Geisenhof Construction. He also worked as a policeman and was a volunteer fireman for over 20 years. In his later years, he did lawn mowing and snow removal for many years.

Edmond is survived by his wife of 35 years Gloria; children: Sandi (Berdell) Poppen, Janet (Jim) Tuchtenhagen; grandchildren: Stephanie, Maddie, Abbey, Ben, Dana, Jack and Jessica; great grandchildren: Athena, Reyna, Eli and brother Lloyd Geisenhof.

Edmond is preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Edna; siblings: Marie Geisenhof, Annabel Tesch, Joe Geisenhof, Steve Geisenhof, Jeanette Perish and wife Sharon Carstensen.

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Rita Silvers, age 95 of Albany, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 4, 2019, at the Church of the Seven Dolors in Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Rita passed away peacefully Monday, December 31, 2018 surrounded by her family at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. There will be a visitation from 4-7:00 PM Thursday and again from 10:00 AM until the time of the service Friday at the church in Albany. Seven Dolors parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM Thursday at the church.

Swanville ExCEL Award Nominees Juniors Kaycee Vilinski and Jamison Koetter have been selected as this year’s Swanville High School ExCEL nominees.

The ExCEL award, which stands for excellence in community, education and leadership, is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and are model citizens. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one female and one male for the ExCEL Award.

Nominees must be a junior in high school, make satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in an MSHSL fine arts or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in their school and volunteer in their community.

Kaycee Vilinski, daughter of Summer Smith, has participated in band,

softball, volleyball, track and field and has taken visual arts classes. Kaycee is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll as well. She spends time volunteering with the Red Cross. Kaycee is a member of the student council, is a class officer, and she is on the homecoming committee Jamison Koetter, son of David and Ann, has participated in band and baseball. Jamison is consistently on the honor roll as well. He spends his time volunteering in a variety of ways in the town. He enjoys doing work outdoors for the elderly in the community including mowing their yards and shoveling their snow. He also helps out at the church with Youth Group activities.

An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select the state ExCEL Award recipient in January. ExCEL winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the upcoming winter state tournaments.

She lives well within her means, so am I wrong to be concerned? Also, do you think she should go ahead and pay off her mortgage?

Now, being in the stock market at her age sounds like a shock to you. I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all. It’s not what the typical financial planner tells you to do. For the most part, they’ll tell you to get super conservative with your money as you get older. But from what you’ve said, she’s not going to use this money. She’s going to use the income from this money. So, the money’s going to be left alone. If she’s in good mutual funds, and not single stocks, I’m not worried about her.

Let’s pay off the mortgage, and then she can start taking her income off the remainder. With the house payment out of the way, she won’t need as much in terms of income, because she won’t be sending money to the bank to pay the note on the house anymore. I’m comfortable with that. I’m 58, and I’m 100 percent into stocks through mutual funds. I don’t have anything else, and I really don’t ever plan on changing that!

—Dave Dear Dave, What happens to my Roth 401(k) when I change jobs and go to a company that doesn’t offer this type of investment savings account? How should you proceed in this situation?

-Jamie Dear Jamie, Anytime you leave one company

for another, you should always roll your 401(k) from your former employer into an IRA (Individual Retirement Account).

If it’s a traditional IRA, you roll it to a traditional IRA. If it’s a Roth IRA, you roll it to a Roth IRA. You would choose your own mutual funds, and you would manage your own accounts, with the help of a financial advisor of your choosing.

When it comes to choosing a financial advisor, my advice is to find someone with the heart of a teacher.

A good financial advisor will help you make informed decisions about your money, and they will explain all aspects of your investments until you fully understand everything. In short, a quality advisor will never encourage you to invest in something you don’t understand.

Also, look for someone with the ability to assess your overall retirement picture. You need someone who will help you map out a complete retirement plan, and your advisor should be able to explain the big picture and provide a comprehensive, easy-to-understand strategy for achieving your retirement goals.

One group of kids baked and frosted cookies to take home to their families, but decided to share some with a few helping adults to eat! It was a very kind gesture and unexpected!

Imagine what life would be like with an angry God - one who was quick to punish us for any and every sin. As soon as we broke one of His laws “He hammers” us. And if He were not compassionate and merciful, there would be no provision or pardon for our wrong doings. Or again, if we were suffering and brokenhearted and filled with grief and guilt for betraying Him we would never hear Him say, “My grace is sufficient.” In the Lord we find mercy for our sins and comfort for our sorrows.

If God were not gracious there would be no grace - no matter how wonderful and needed it is. But it only has significance when we understand that it means God, at no cost to us, will unconditionally and willingly forgive us of all of our sins. The Lord erases the ugliness of the past and provides us with clean, blank pages to fill with the potential of a new life committed to Him. Amazing grace!

Dear Motor Medics, During a recent episode of Under The Hood you were talking about intake gaskets and the failure of them. I have one of those cars that have had them fail twice in an eight-year period.

The car is a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix with a non-supercharged engine. What is it that causes them to fail? I heard you address fixing them but not why they go out.

-Sandra in Madison, Wisconsin Dear Sandra, Many cars have intake gaskets fail after they have been in use for a number of years but we tend to see more failures on the v6 non-supercharged General Motors engines in our shop. Now with that said it is important to note that I have friends down south where the climate shifts are not as extreme and they rarely see this issue.

Because we see a greater failure in our cold climate, we have to think that it is the cold weather that causes the intake, heads, and the block, to contract and expand at different rates due to their different metal content and this causes extreme wear on the gaskets. This constant movement eventually breaks down the gasket and allows coolant and oil to start to move beyond the block. Combine this with coolant that is not maintained regularly and the wear can be increased even more so. The best preventative is using the best set of gaskets you can find and regular cooling system service.

never had the brakes replaced. They seem to be working good as far as I can tell but I don’t want them to suddenly fail. Do they do that? Suddenly fail without warning. I am one of those drivers that change my oil regularly at the quick lube but never do any preventative maintenance. I just wait for it to break and fix it then to save money. So far, my luck has been good, not even a tune up yet in 80,000 miles knock on wood.

-Mark in Bennington, Vermont Dear Mark, Brakes are nothing to play around with and they should be inspected regularly. In your owner’s manual there is a severe service interval for checking these things and it should be followed.

If you don’t know the condition of your brakes, you need to find out so you can prevent that sudden failure or at the very least an expensive repair. There is much more to the system than just pads, there are hoses and other hardware and regular maintenance is an important part of keeping repair costs down and safety up.

Now aside from the brakes… No other maintenance, not even a tune up? I have two important words that could possibly cost you a bundle in the future. Timing Belt, check it out!

Mary Jane C. Kane

Mary Jane C. Kane, age 87 of Sauk Centre, was welcomed into her eternal life by her husband, Jim and son, Tom on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, January 4, 2019 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Tim Wenzel officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Mary Jane Clara Kraemer was born June 4, 1931 in West Union, Minnesota to John and Frances (Deters) Kraemer. She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Kane on September 29, 1953 at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union. Mary Jane volunteered at Holy Family School for 25 years. Her faith was very important in her life, and her legacy of faith and family has been passed down to her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Mothers. Mary Jane enjoyed

playing cards, embroidery, spending time with her family, cooking and baking, especially baking her homemade buns and apple pies.

Survivors include her children, Carol (Joe) Dockendorf of St. Cloud, Susie (Ken) Rutten of Osakis, Deb (Pat) Robischon of Sauk Centre, Janet (Dave) Kubinski of Sauk Centre, and Bonnie (Joel) Athmann of St. Cloud; daughter-in-law, Jan Kane of Sauk Centre; 14 grandchildren, Nathan, Cory, Jamie, Jordan, Meggie, Alex, Matt, Tony, Tara, Lindsay, Austin, Allison, Jared, and Kaylee; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Sand of Albany; and brother, Ray (Joanie) Kraemer of Osakis.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Kane on October 7, 2010; son, Tom Kane on March 21, 2011; brothers, Frank, John, and Jerome Kraemer; and sister, Vivian Marthaler.

Serving as casket bearers will be Nate Dockendorf, Cory Dockendorf, Matt Middendorf, Tony Middendorf, Alex Rutten, Jared Athmann, and Austin Robischon.

Stalking: Know it. Name it. Stop it.

By Connie J. Nelson, Hands of Hope Have you ever had the eerie feeling that someone is watching you or that someone is following you? Unfortunately this happens more often than we would like to think, and it happens in many ways that often are not looked upon by most as threatening, such as unwanted gifts, cards and flowers sent to one’s home or work, repeatedly driving by home or work, following, possible damage to property, and the new stalking is that done with technology.

Many stalkers use cell phone apps and GPS to locate and follow their victims, as well as email and computer monitoring. January is the 15th year of National Stalking Awareness Month, a time like all the other Awareness months to take a closer look at the issue of stalking.

One of the frightening and least known statistics of stalking is that 75% of victims of stalking know the stalker personally, an ex-husband, former co-worker or boyfriend, etc. Stalking is a crime in all 50 states, with over 7.5 million victims each year nationwide including men and women, and is one of the most significant risk factors for femicide {homicide of women in abusive relationships}. Stalking often goes hand in hand with domestic violence or teen dating violence and is done to cause fear and show control. Like sexual violence, stalking often times goes unreported to the criminal justice system, thus allowing the behavior to continue sometimes for years.

What can you do if you think that

you are being stalked? Like any crime if you feel in immediate danger, you should call 911. If you realize that you are being stalked, document the incidents that happen, when, where and what. Always take the threats, whether verbal or other, with great seriousness.

Under no circumstance, answer or have any communication with the stalker, he could construe this as an encouraging sign. Make a safety plan for your home, work, and times of travel, so that you have a predisposed plan to attempt to ensure your safety. Trust your instincts, listen to your “gut”, you will seldom be steered in the wrong direction.

Herbert H. “Herbie” Trisco Herbert H. “Herbie” Trisco, age 75 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 7 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. A family inurnment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.

He was united in marriage to Cindi Schaeffer on May 19, 1995 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Herbie continued to farm until his retirement in December of

D o l o r e s M. Kantor passed away on We d n e s d a y, December 26, 2018, after a longfought battle with ALS. She was born in Duelm, MN to Alfred and Helen (Kampa) Maslonkowski on April 8,1937. She was the oldest of 7 children.

Dolores married Ed Kantor on September 7, 1965 in Foley, MN. She was employed as a telephone operator by Northwestern Bell, and later was a homemaker. She and Edward moved from St. Cloud to Holdingford in 1976.

She returned to work at The St. Cloud Hospital and later at The College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Opole and a member

1999. He then enjoyed cooking and baking, and loved birdwatching and driving through the neighborhood countryside.

Survivors include his wife, Cindi Trisco of Sauk Centre; two daughters, Laura McCarthy of Bloomington and Lynn (Mike) Morris of Brooklyn Park; granddaughter, Gabrielle “Elle” Morris; sister, Bernice (Roman) Hellermann of Melrose; brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott (Claudette “Clyde”) Schaeffer, Jane (David) Lalim, and Terry Schaeffer; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Herbie was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Frances Trisco; sister, Leona (Gilbert) Hallgren; brother, Norbert (Luann) Trisco; Godson, Darrell Hellermann; father and mother-in-law, Richard and Betty Schaeffer.

Tax Reform and You

Taxes, everyone’s favorite subject.

There’s been a lot of buzz about the new tax reform bill this year. Change is always hard, and taxes are harder. And with all the changes taking place this year, the thought of filing your taxes can feel overwhelming at best.

While most of these changes should simplify the process, a lot of people are wondering how this reform will impact them and their bank accounts.

The good news is there are some nice things in store for most people with the tax reform. Let’s walk through a few you should know before filing your taxes.

Updated Tax Brackets and Lower Income Tax Rates The new tax brackets and income tax rates are one of the most talked about changes when it comes to the tax reform. The main thing you should know is that the seven tax brackets we already have in place will stay that way, but tax rates for each are going down through 2025. For example, if you’re single making $50,000 a year, your tax rate will drop from 25 percent to 22 percent. In 2026, these cuts will expire,

unless there is another bill in the future that changes. For now, people are paying less in taxes.

The New Standard Deduction The standard deduction is dollar amount that you’re able to deduct from your taxable income. Under the new reform, the standard deduction has nearly doubled! Before the reform, the standard deduction for an individual was $6,350. Now, it’s $12,000. For a married couple it used to be $12,700, and that has gone up to $24,000. So, if you’re single and would normally do an itemized deduction, if it equals less than $12,000 you would take the standard deduction instead.

Changes for Married Couples Married couples will rejoice this tax season. Before the tax reform, some married taxpayers were bumped into a higher tax bracket when they combined their incomes. The new tax brackets have doubled for people filing jointly, so no more marriage penalties this time!

Updated Child Tax Credit People with kiddos will be happy with at least one part of the new tax reform. Previously, parents who made less than $110,000 jointly and $75,000 individually received a $1,000 tax credit for qualified children under age 17.

Now, that credit has increased to $2,000 and the income limits were raised to $400,000 jointly and $200,000 individually. If you have kids and fall below those income levels, that’s $2,000 back in your pocket!

U of M Cow/Calf Days Event to be held in Staples on January 22

By Brenda Miller, University of Minnesota Extension University of Minnesota Extension will be holding the annual Cow/Calf Days workshop in Staples on Tuesday, January 22nd starting at 9:30 am in the Commons Area at Central Lakes College. This event has been held for over 45 years and continues to be the leading information, technology, and research outlet for cow/calf producers in the state of Minnesota.

This year’s event will feature information on: cow herd efficiency, genetic selection for commercial cow-calf operators, and optimizing ranch production per acre. The program with also feature a Q & A session with Elanco Animal Health veterinarians Dr. Brett Terhar and Dr. Bruce Hoffman. Updates from the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association will also highlight the event. The corresponding tradeshow will feature vendors with new information, technology, and products with a wide-array of practical uses for the operators in the cow-calf sector.

December 25, 2018: On Christmas Day, Deputy Eric Schultz responded to a farming accident in Grove Township.

The caller reported her husband was caught in a corn picker. The victim was done using the implement and was trying to clean it. He got his hand stuck in the grinder which was still running. He suffered significant injury to his right hand. He was transported by ambulance to the Melrose Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The Melrose Fire Department, Melrose Ambulance Service and Life Link Helicopter responded to this incident.

The theme of this year’s program is, you guessed it, “Get Yeti to Read.”

However, unlike the elusive Bigfoot, a good book is easy to find at the library.

A man was flying from Seattle to San Francisco. Unexpectedly, the plane stopped in Sacramento along the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft, the plane would re-board in 50 minutes.
