He delivered newspapers, sold golf balls and stamps and detailed cars. He always knew that he was going to be a wealthy person, and he certainly achieved that.

Tyler Perry had a tough childhood and was expelled from high school. He was physically and sexually abused and tried to commit suicide twice.

Yet he didn’t give up on his dream of working in theater. He wrote, produced and starred in a variety of shows that were unsuccessful. Finally he realized success with his seventh show and has truly become a superstar in Hollywood.

J.K. Rowling was an unemployed divorced mother living off state benefits when she decided to turn to her writing passion. Within five years she was one of the richest women in the United Kingdom, thanks to her fictional friend, Harry Potter.

For example, writer W.P. Kinsella envisioned an Iowa corn farmer and a dream to reunite a deceased father and son for a game of baseball. He turned his dream into the novel “Shoeless Joe,” which later resulted in the blockbuster movie, “Field of Dreams.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cast Iron Those old black cast iron frying pans and dutch ovens have been a part of our lives back to our earliest memories.

Some of us remember going to Grandma’s house for Sunday dinner and noticing that the main part of the menu coming from an old black, well used, iron pan.

Probably since she had many years of practice, the food was delicious.

When we look back in history, we find that iron pans have been used for hundreds of years. Whether the cooking was being done over a camp fire, in front of a fireplace, using a wood stove or a modern electric or gas stove, these great old pans were part of the cooking process. They appeared in our earliest American history, followed the western migration and continued into the modern kitchen.

Cast iron pans seemed to become less popular when no-stick pans came on the market. They offered easier cleanup, lighter weight and the satisfaction that the kitchen now had the most up-todate gadget. The problems with the new pans were that they didn’t fry evenly on the whole frying surface, they blackened too quickly on some spots of the surface and ultimately some of the non-stick protection coating chipped off, which was not healthy for the family. As a result, the old cast iron method is again gaining popularity.

If you have an iron fry-pan in storage, take it out and next time you fry fish, do one pan in cast iron and another in a new frying pan model and then do a taste test. There is a difference!

If you need to get a cast iron pan, they appear at garage sales, auctions and on retailers shelves. Before using, the pan may have to have dirt and rust removed by using steel wool, after which they need to be washed, dried over heat and coated with cooking oil and placed in an oven for a couple of hours at 350 degrees. If needed, a second oiling and heating may be required. The oven treatment creates a form of nonstick coating which will remain until it is either scraped off or subjected to scrubbing using soap. Now its ready to fry, roast if you have a dutch oven or even bake breads or cobblers.

It is easy to make a roast or chicken using a dutch oven. Season the meat as desired, brown on all surfaces possible, add half an inch of water or broth, add carrots, potatoes or onion, put the cover on and put it in the oven. Richer flavor is available by reducing the heat to 250 and leaving it in the oven for 5 hours. Since the cover doesn’t allow the moisture to escape, the roast remains moist in the

Cleanup is accomplished by putting water in the pan and placing it on the stove to allow steam to release any unwanted residue. Wipe the pan clean with a paper towel, put over heat to dry and wipe with a little bit of oil and it’s ready for use next time.

I suppose most of us have heard stories about cleaning the pans in early years. Some told of those who only scraped residue from the pan without any washing before storage. Another told of a frying pan which hadn’t had previously used grease removed leaving it half full of an accumulation of “stuff”.

The fried foods tasted great. An older fellow told me that if the pan gets hot enough to fry something and there are bacteria in the pan that survive the heat, they would probably kill you anyway.

For those of you that use iron pans, keep enjoying it. For those that don’t, give it a try. The more you use it, the more ideas you’ll think of and you’ll find even new uses for Cast Iron.

“I think, therefore I am” is a fundamental concept of philosophy: We have to assume that we really exist, because we’re aware of our existence.

But in neurological terms the idea is more complicated, because scientists haven’t been able to identify the area of the brain responsible for self-awareness.

Research involving lucid dreaming may solve the mystery. Lucid dreamers are sleepers who are aware that they’re dreaming and can even control their dreams. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich are comparing brain functions before and during lucid dreaming, hoping to pin down how the brain knows it’s awake and aware.

That’s more science than I can absorb! But what I do know is that dreams come true every day. Small dreams can grow to big dreams.

Obituaries James H. “Jim” Petermeier

J a m e s H. “Jim” Petermeier, age 87 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, January 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

James Henry Petermeier was born March 11, 1932 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Conrad and Dora (Schmiesing) Petermeier.

Jim served in the U.S. Army as a cook and was honorably discharged in 1961.

On June 27, 1955 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Deters at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Jim farmed north of Melrose until his retirement in 1994 when he and Betty moved to Melrose.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. In Jim’s younger years, he enjoyed taking his family to his brother’s lake cabin, dancing, and fishing. Later in life, he loved going back to the farm and help where he could, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Petermeier of Melrose; children, Mark Petermeier (significant other, Sandy Kleinfehn) of Melrose, Sandy (Ron) Meyer of Little Birch Lake, Sue (Randy) Moening of Melrose, and Jeff (Sue) Petermeier of Melrose; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Brannan of St. Cloud; and twin brother, John “Jack” Petermeier of Melrose.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter, Cardi Sue Cruz; brothers, Gene and Bob Petermeier; and sisters, Bernie Barrett and Adeline Christen.

Serving as casket bearers will be Nathan Meyer, Adam Petermeier, Nick Meyer, Brandon Cruz, Noel Meyer, Tyler Petermeier, and Mitchell Moening. Cross bearer will be Katy Sue Petermeier and scripture bearer will be Sydney Petermeier.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Serving as casket bearers were Dustin Welz, Brandon Toenyan, Brian Toenyan, Jessica Nelson, Stephanie Brenner, Kim Gaebel, and Kayla Welz.

Cross bearer was Cameron Gaebel and scripture bearer was Adam Fiedler. Gift bearers were Kaiden Gaebel, Carson Gaebel, and Parker Welz. Readers were Stephanie Brenner and Kirsten Fiedler.

Petitions were read by Jessica Nelson.

Eulogies were by Kim Gaebel and Kayla Welz-Schulzetenberg.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Darlene A. Toenyan, age 92 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 27 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Darlene Adeline Bloxham was born January 2, 1928 in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Daniel and Josephine (Marty) Bloxham.

Darlene grew up on her parents farm where she was born. They farmed with horses and grew their own food. She attended country school until 8th grade.

On September 12, 1950, she married her neighbor and family friend, Justin Toenyan in South St. Paul, Minnesota.

After living in South St. Paul for a short time, the couple moved to Grey Eagle and Darlene began helping her parents on the farm. Years later, Justin and Darlene owned and operated Toenyan Oil Company Inc. from 1963 to 1982.

Darlene enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing, playing Bingo, and spending time with her family.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children, Gary (Sandy) Toenyan of Melrose, Debra (Jim) Welz of Melrose, and Jim (Cheryl) Toenyan of Grey Eagle; grandchildren, Brian Toenyan, Kim (Chad) Gaebel, Dustin (Ashley) Welz, Kayla (Paul)

Robert “Bob” Maybon Robert L. “Bob” Maybon, age 85 of Burtrum, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020 at his home near Burtrum, Minnesota.

Vi s i t a t i o n will be held M o n d a y , February 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Grey Eagle. Family inurnment will take place at a later date in Nebraska.

Robert Lee Maybon was born January 17, 1935 in Rosalie, Nebraska

to Everett and Mildred (Carlson) Maybon. He was raised in Albion, Nebraska where he started farming after graduating high school in 1952. Bob married Nadine Duer in April 1959 and the couple moved to Minnesota. Bob and Nadine raised their four children together.

Survivors include his children, Terry (Bev) Maybon of Brainerd, MN, Susan (Tim) Salber of St. Michael, MN, Laura Maybon of Coon Rapids, MN, and Todd Maybon of Oakland, TN; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Sandy) Maybon; and sister, Betty Rieken.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mildred Maybon; and sister, Darlene Nathan.

Brandon T. Schaefer

Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:00 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2020 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, MN for Brandon T. Schaefer, age 35, who died Tuesday at the CentraCare – Paynesville Hospital surrounded by his family.

Relatives and friends may gather after 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning at the Church.

Brandon was born on June 13, 1984 in Albany, MN to Gerald and Debra

(Tomsche) Schaefer. He was proud to be the 6th generation to farm on the family farm alongside his father. He was very creative and loved woodworking, riding his Harley in the summer and spear fishing in his Grandpa’s spear house.

Brandon was the happiest being with his friends.

Survivors include his parents, Jerry and Deb Schaefer; grandparents, Alice Schaefer, Tom and Marilyn Tomsche; brother, Dave (Danelle); niece Kaylee; nephew and godson, Jaxson; his close friend, Kim Gertken and her children, Kyle, Cloey, Colton; many aunts and uncles and his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Herman Schaefer and his uncle, Steve Schaefer.

Allen Hinnenkamp

A l l e n Hinnenkamp, 67, of Long Prairie, MN passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his staff listening to country music on January 24, 2020.

Funeral services for Allen was held Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Fr. Omar Guanchez officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Allen Ernest Hinnenkamp was born on September 8th, 1952 in Sauk Centre, to Frederick and Bernadine (Jacobs) Hinnenkamp.

In 1988, Allen moved into residential housing through Meridian Services Inc. in Long Prairie, MN. Allen worked through the Todd County DAC for many years.

Allen enjoyed car rides, country music and being a jokester with all the staff. He enjoyed his lite bright and would put a puzzle together faster than anyone. Allen enjoyed snack times and loved his coffee, root beer and his daily cup of chocolate milk. Allen had a presence that attracted everyone. He showed his affection to the staff by giving nose bumps (and lots of them).

Allen will be deeply missed by all staff that cared for him over the years.

Allen is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Bernadine Hinnenkamp, sister Joan Hetland, and brother Frank Hinnenkamp.

Yvonne A. Diedrich

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Yvonne A. Diedrich, age 87, of Avon who passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Cloud. Rev. Gregory Miller, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish mausoleum. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Yvonne Ann Diedrich passed away peacefully at Quiet Oaks Hospice House after losing her battle with lymphoma.

Yvonne was born March 1, 1932 to Bernard Joseph Budde and Frances (Moening) Budde in Avon. She was the seventh of ten children.

Yvonne married Arthur Joseph Diedrich on October 16, 1952 and together they had seven children.

While Yvonne’s husband was overseas serving his country, Yvonne worked as a seamstress at Munsingwear in Minneapolis but was later summoned back to Avon to help out with her father who was ill. During this time, Yvonne worked at Lichy’s Restaurant preparing food and cleaning. Yvonne raised her children well, teaching them to plant and tend to the vegetable garden, to can fruits and vegetables to last throughout the winter, to cook and bake and sew, to pluck feathers and make down pillows, and to do all necessary chores in and around the house and yard. She taught her children to be self-sufficient.

Yvonne took much pride in her role as a mother and raised her seven children the old-fashioned way, sewing

She did enjoy quilting with her mother and daughters, and as her children grew older, she enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards and bowling with her husband and friends, she dabbled in ceramics, and later in life she took much pride and pleasure in flower gardening in her yard as well as helping to maintain gardens for the city of Avon.

Yvonne was a model of perseverance throughout her life. No matter what life threw at her, she never gave up.

Shortly before leaving for college my saintly pastor came to visit me and offer me a few words of advice on the importance of being well prepared to serve God. During our conversation he advised me to take every course that had anything to do with speaking or writing.

“Larry,” he said in a voice that reflected sincerity and compassion, “it does not matter how much you know about the Bible, if you can’t explain it so people can understand it, accept it and live it, you’ll be letting God down.” It made good sense to me and I followed his rec-

ommendation carefully.

One of the classes I took emphasized the difficulty of people hearing what a speaker says and interpreting it correctly. It is easy to hear what someone says but quite difficult to pass it on without changing the words and the meaning that the speaker intended.

When this happens something is lost in “transmission” and it could be a matter of life and death if the message passed on is incorrect or inconsistent.

The importance of the integrity of God’s message is clearly presented in Psalm 92:5, “Your statues stand firm!”

That means “Whatever God said is so.”

His Word contains no errors, no mistakes and no information that can lead us astray if accepted as written. In fact, the word for statues emphasizes the fact that Scripture rests on the integrity of God our Creator. His statements, promises, warnings and commands are not to be changed to meet the desires of man but to proclaim and present the everlasting covenant between God and man.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan and the power operated side door doesn’t always work.

Sometimes when you close the door it will almost move to the full closed position then it reverses and fully opens. If I try it several times it sometimes closes.

I have been told by two dealerships that it needs a new ribbon cable and its hundreds of dollars. Is this common?

-Margaret in Fargo, North Dakota Dear Margaret, This is a common problem in many of the vans using a power sliding door system. They have to make a connection between the door and the body and many do it with a cable. The cable moves back and forth every time the door slides and with enough time it can be rubbed through or break one of the wires in the cable. If either of these things happens it can act just like yours is operating. Other issues like programming can be a factor and less expensive than a new cable so make sure that they give it a proper diagnosis and guarantee their work. A good thing to remember is the most expensive repair is always the one you don’t need. Make sure that the shop doing the repairs has had experience with the system used on your vehicle. If it is a cable they are expensive to replace mostly due to the time involved for the labor which can take several hours of work.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I listen to Under the Hood here in Salida Colorado and I drive a Chevy S10 with a manual transmission. Recently the transmission has become hard to put into reverse and also first gear unless

the engine is turned off. When I try to engage it the gears grind and if I force it I can get it to go eventually. Once it is in gear it seems to work ok. What can you tell me?

-Kelly in Salida, Colorado Dear Kelly, It sounds like the clutch is not completely disengaging. To smoothly engage without gear clash, the input shaft of the transmission needs to stop moving and this occurs when the clutch is pressed down. Many things can cause it to keep moving like a warped clutch disc or pressure plate or the pilot shaft dragging on the crankshaft but the most common item is worn clutch hydraulics.

The vehicle will need to be properly diagnosed to verify which component is the cause before repairs. The one thing to note is that if it is being operated in this condition it can cause damage to occur to the transmission very quickly and increase repair costs. The grinding can cause gear wear internally and if the clutch is dragging due to a hydraulic problem then heat will be built up which can burn up clutch friction parts or cause warpage which will mean having to replace the clutch parts.

Melrose City January 6, 2020 The Melrose City Council met in a Regular Meeting on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Melrose City Center pursuant to due notice being given thereof. Present were Council Members Tony Klasen, Justin Frieler, Travis Frieler, Mark “Bunker” Hill, Mayor Joe Finken, City Administrator Colleen Winter, and City Clerk Patti Haase.

Mayor Finken presided thereat. The Council then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried to approve the agenda as presented.

Mayor Finken then opened the floor to public comment. There were no comments.

The following items were considered for approval under the Consent Agenda: a. 1) Assistant Weed Inspector Mayor to appoint for a one-year term.

Streets/Parks Supervisor Gary Middendorf will serve in this position.

2) City Forester Mayor to appoint for a one-year term.

3) Animal Control Officer Mayor to appoint for a one-year term the Melrose Police Department as the City Animal Control Officer. b. 1) Official Newspaper The Council to give consideration to designating the City’s official newspaper for 2019. In the past the Melrose Beacon has served in this capacity.

2) Animal Shelter The Council to give consideration to designating the Minnesota Veterinary Associates, Inc. as the Animal Shelter. The Council to take action on this designation. c. Resolution No 2020-1, Resolution Designating Official Depository and upplemental Depositories for City Funds. This resolution designates Central Minnesota Credit Union – Melrose as the official depository for 2018 and the Finance Director is given the authority to name additional depositories for the deposit of funds. The Council may wish to again grant the Finance Director the authority to name the depositories. This could be done with the understanding that Central Minnesota Credit Union - Melrose, and Freeport State Bank – Melrose would also be used as depositories. The motion designating the depositories of City funds should include the following, “For the purpose of being certain that all funds in financial institutions will be insured, the Finance Director shall have the authority pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 118A.02, Subd. 1, to name depositories for the deposit of funds so as to make certain that all City funds are either insured or collateral has been pledged by the depository as security, as permitted

by M.S., Chapter 118A.” The Council to take action on the pro-

posed resolution. d. Donation Resolution 1) Resolution No. 2020-2 donation from the St. Rosa Lions Club in the amount of $500 towards the Melrose Ambulance Department e. The City has received the final invoice payment towards the road construction contract with Stearns County. The city has some participation responsibility towards the CSAH 65 sidewalk project A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the Consent Agenda items.

Consideration to be given to the following appointments: 1) Acting Mayor: Council to take action appointing an Acting Mayor for a one-year term. Council Member Tony Klasen served as Acting Mayor 2019. A motion was made

by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried appointing Mr. Klasen as acting Mayor for 2020.

2) Public Utilities Commission: The Council to appoint one member for a threeyear term and a Council Representative for a one-year term to the Public Utilities Commission. Incumbent Eric Seanger is seeking reappointment. No other applications have been received. The Council to appoint a Council Representative for a one-year term to the Public Utilities Commission. Joe Finken served as the Council Representative for the year of 2019. A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried to reappoint Mr. Eric Seanger to the Melrose Public Utilities Commission for a three-year term and Mr. Joe Finken as the Council Representative for a one-year term.

3) Planning and Zoning Commission: The Council to appoint two members for a four-year term. Incumbent Jason Seanger is seeking reappointment to the Planning and Zoning Commission. No other applications have been received. The Council to appoint a Council Representative for a one-year term to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

For 2019, Bunker Hill served as the Council Representative. A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried reappointing Mr. Jason Seanger to the Planning and Zoning Commission for a four-year term and Mr. Mark Hill as the Council representative for a oneyear term.

4) Melrose Area Development Authority (MADA): The Council to appoint one member for a six-year term to the Melrose Area Development Authority. Incumbent Don Brower is not seeking reappointment.

Julie Baum has submitted a letter of interest.

The Council to appoint a Council Representative for a one-year term to the Melrose Area Development Authority. For 2019 Travis Frieler served as the Council Represen-

tative. A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Hill and unanimously carried appointing Ms. Julie Baum to the Melrose Area Development Authority for a six-year term and Mr. Travis Frieler as the Council representative for a one-year term.

5) Parks and Recreation Board: Mayor to appoint and Council to concur appointing a Council Representative to the Parks and Recreation Board to serve a one term. For 2019, Justin Frieler served as the Council Representative. Mayor Finken stated that currently the Park and Recreation Board is comprised of 2 members from MADA, 2 members from the Planning and Zoning Commission, and a Council Representative.

Mayor Finken asked if the Council would consider restricting the Parks and Recreation Board to include one member from MADA, one member from Planning and Zoning, a Council Representative and 2 members at large. The Council be consensus was agreeable to have staff bring this before MADA and Planning and Zoning for consideration.

A motion was made by Mr. Travis Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried reappointing Mr. Justin Frieler to the Park and Recreation Board as the Council representative for a one-year term.

6) Melrose Fire Relief Association: Council to appoint a Council Representative to the Fire Relief Association. Justin Frieler served as the Representative in 2019.A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried reappointing Justin Frieler to the Melrose Fire Relief Association.

7) Melrose Housing and Redevelopment Authority: Council to appoint one member for a five-year term. Matt McDonald is seeking reappointment. Council to appoint a Council Representative to serve a oneyear term to the Melrose Housing and Redevelopment Authority. Mark “Bunker” Hill served as Council Representative for 2019.

A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried adopting Resolution No. 2020-3 Resolution of Appointment.

1) The Council to give consideration to designating the Grievance Representative for 2020. The Utilities Commission will also designate their Grievance Representative for 2020 at its January 13, 2020 meeting. For 2019, Joe Finken was the Council representative and Jeremy Kraemer was the Utilities Commission representative. The Council to take action appointing a Council Member to serve as Grievance Representative for 2020.

A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded

by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried reappointing Mr. Finken as the Grievance Representative for 2020.

2) The Council to give consideration to appointing a member to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for future

labor discussions. In 2019 Council Member Mark “Bunker” Hill served as Council Representative and Eric Seanger served as the Utilities Commission representative for this Committee. The Utilities Commission will be appointing a representative at its January 13, 2020 meeting. The Council to take action appointing a representative to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for 2020.A motion was made by Mr. Travis Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried reappointing Mr. Hill to the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee for 2020.

City Administrator Winter is requesting that the Council consider renewing the contract with Tri-Cap bus service. The City of Melrose purchases 20 hours of bus service a week from Tri-Cap at a monthly cost.

Tri-CAP is proposing to raise their rates by 1.5% in 2020, resulting in a cost of $442.00 per month or $5,304.00 per year. Tri-Cap ridership has increased every year and ride counts through October. 2019 were 7,455.

A motion was made by Mr. Hill seconded

by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried approving the Tri-CAP transportation program.

Police Chief Craig Maus is recommending the hire of Madison Honer as a part-time police officer. Ms. Honer also works parttime for the Sauk Centre Police Department.

Pay would be at start on the pay scale which is $24.63 per hour. The Sauk Centre Police Department will be carrying Ms. Honer’s license. A motion was made by Mr. Hill seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried approving the hire of Ms. Honer as a part-time police officer at start on the pay scale which is $24.63 per hour.

A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried that the meeting be adjourned at 6:15 p.m.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Leona Eggerth who died Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie. John Yourczek officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Leona was born January 30, 1950 in Long Prairie to Edward & Irene (Hale) Kasper. She married Roger Eggerth on November 17, 1973 in Burtrum. She

James Pitzer

A Gathering of Family and Friends celebrating the life of James N. Pitzer will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 31 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany. James passed away Friday, January 24 at his home in Millwood Township.

James was born on December 22, 1929, in Denver, CO, the son of Clyde and Iona (Mouat) Pitzer. He attended school in Greely, CO, and eventually

worked at Hart Press for 43 years and cherished the many friendships she developed there. She had a passion for sewing and quilting, which occupied much of her free time. Leona was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She looked forward to the resurrection hope and living forever on a paradise earth.

Survivors include her husband, Roger; brothers, Robert (Susan) Kasper of Randall, Richard (Amanda) Kasper of Long Prairie; and sister, LaVonne Ahlers of Carlos.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and infant daughter; brother, Henry Kasper; sisters, LoAnn Poegel and infant sister, Leota Kasper; brothers-inlaw, Pete Ahlers and Norman Eggerth. became a teacher after graduating college. He taught at Oak Creek High School before moving to Minnesota in 1967, where he continued his teaching career; he eventually retired from education in 1997.

James will always be remembered by his son, Daniel (Linda) Pitzer of Avon; grandchildren, Crystal (Andy) Pitzer, Cory (Abby) Pitzer and Brandy Pitzer; great-grandchildren, Zach, Sadie, Shonda, Destiny, Rihana, Adrian, and Ashton; his loyal friend and dog, Haus; as well as other extended family and countless friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Iona Pitzer; and sister, Jean Pitzer.

James Edward Oehrlein J a m e s E d w a r d Oehrlein, 92, of Albany, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Cherrywood Advanced Living in St. Cloud.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 25th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Jim was born December 15, 1927 to William and Clara (Vos) Oehrlein. One of thirteen children, Jim spent his youth working and playing on the farm. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army and served in Japan following WWII. He was honorably discharged and returned home to continue his education at St. John’s University. In 1950, Jim married Valeria Buerman. The couple lived in St. Paul for a few years where Jim worked for Northwest Airlines as a mechanic. However, city life didn’t quite bring Jim the joy as life on the farm had, so they returned to St. Anthony to run the century farm he grew up on. They raised nine children on the farm. Jim also worked for Sta-Rite Dairy supplies as a Milk Equipment Sales Representative.

Jim and Val valued education and instilled that in their children. Jim also committed several years to the Albany Area School Board and advocated special education opportunities. The children were encouraged to be active in sports and other activities. Jim and Val enjoyed attending as many of these events as they could. Following his retirement from farming, Jim worked as an Assessor for ASC Office, an endeavor that allowed him to stay active in farming and help his neighbors.

Jim’s happy place was the farm.

Years after the last cow had been milked and the last field plowed, he would journey out there to putz on whatever he could find. His family meant everything to him, and he was always looking for a good reason to have a “wiener roast” or golf outing. He never met a 500 hand he couldn’t make an 8 bid on, a grandchild he didn’t cherish or a chocolate chip cookie he could pass up. His one-liners will be forever missed; but his big heart and helpful hands will never be forgotten.

Jim is survived by his wife of 69 years, Val; children, Terry (Patti), Bev (Sandy), Kathy, Mark (Gail), Lottie (Jim Kane), Mike (Tina), Jim (Sherrie), Carol, and Amy; grandchildren, Rhonda (Jed

Fatal Farm Accident: January 28, 2020: Albany man dies in farm accident.

On January 28, 2020 at 10:16 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a missing individual on a farm in St. Martin Township. The caller stated they could not find their son and believed he may have fallen into a grain bin.

The St. Martin Fire Department worked diligently in the grain bin, which was 3/4 full of corn. They recovered the victim from inside of the bin. He was identified as, Brandon Schaefer, 35, of Albany.

Preliminary investigation revealed Mr. Schaefer was working in the grain bin to loosen up the frozen corn. He fell in and was buried.

Mr. Schaefer was transported to the Paynesville Hospital by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

Melrose Ambulance also assisted.

We’re also setting aside a little each month to buy a newer car with cash later.

We’re about $5,000 from our car fund goal, but my husband is getting impatient.

He wants us to go ahead a finance the remainder, since it’s a relatively small amount. He has tried to justify this by mentioning that you don’t seem to have a problem with people borrowing money to buy a house. Could you explain the difference?

-Lana Dear Lana, Okay, first things first. I don’t like debt of any kind. I don’t really like borrowing for a house, but I’m not unreasonable. I tolerate mortgage loans, as long as people use a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, with payments that are no more than a fourth of their monthly take-home pay. A house is often the largest purchase in a person’s life, and one most people can’t achieve based solely on saving. I still recommend, however, setting aside as much as possible for a down payment

Here’s the thing. Cars go down in value, while traditional homes generally increase in value substantially over the years. Plus, you can get an absolutely great, pre-owned car for $10,000 to $15,000 dollars. This is an amount which, in my mind, is doable over the course of several months through determined saving and living on a budget. Depending on where you live, a good home can cost 10 to 20 times that much.

The best way to build wealth and have a secure financial life is to stay away from debt. This means getting out of mortgage debt as quickly as possible, too. You’re never going to win with money if you can’t learn to delay pleasure.

Everyone has that little kid inside them, and that little kid wants everything he or she wants right now. Your husband is asking a normal question, but he’s dangerously close to letting that immature little kid out. It happens to all of us once in a while, but we have to grow to a point as adults where we tell that little kid no!

January 13, 2020: At 17:11 Derek Rech, rural Little Falls, reported that someone broke into his fish house on Long Lake in Burnhamville Township.

The burglary occurredbetween 9 pm January 9th and the afternoon on January 10th. The window was busted out and fishing items were taken from the fish house. Anyone with information on this burglary is asked tocontact the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

January 14, 2020: At 13:17 David Larson of rural Little Falls, reported the theft of a generator and auger from Bass Lake in Burtrum. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Todd CountySheriff’s Office at 320-732-2157.

January 21, 2020: During the week of January 12th through January 18th, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 132 calls for service. The following were the types of calls: 32 traffic stops, 17 civil process, 8 suspicious activity type complaints, 2 assist other agencies, 4 car/deer accidents, 7 welfare checks, 4 disturbances/domestics, 4 vehicles in the ditch, and 2 accidents. Todd County Dispatch received 106 - 911 Calls during the week.

January 27, 2020: During the week of January 19th through January 25th, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 157 calls for service. The following were the types of calls: 50 traffic stops, 9 civil process,13 suspicious activity type complaints, 3 assist other agencies, 4 car/ deer accidents, 6 welfare checks, 4 disturbances/domestics, 6 vehicles in the ditch, and 3 accidents.
