Use your head to get your foot in the door -By Harvey Mackay I love creativity, and one of the most fruitful uses of creativity is landing a job.

You have to set yourself apart from the crowd.

Whether the job market is hot, when jobs are plentiful, or rough, when competition is especially fierce, landing the job you really want takes some effort. Over the years I’ve encountered some very creative ways that people have found jobs, and I would like to share some of my favorites with you.

Social media is a great way not only to meet potential employers, but also a place to post some of your work or start a blog. How about creating your own website?

Enhance your resume by adding images, graphs, color and design. Make a video. One person even wrote a song.

Send some extra special items with your cover letter and resume, such as cupcakes, cookies, a box of chocolates or doughnuts that spell out your name.

As hokey as that may sound, it can work.

I really get a kick out of crazy stunts.

Like sending a potential employer a shoe with their resume and a note, “Just wanted to get my foot in the door.” One

guy took out a billboard touting his qualifications. I’ve heard people doing radio ads and creating an imaginative brochure or direct mail piece. Still another sent a singing telegram praising her skills.

One reader shared with me that when she was looking for a job, she went to the Atlanta airport and passed her resume out to dozens and dozens of business travelers. She thought this would be a good idea since a high percentage of travelers during the week are business travelers. As she passed out her resumes she told the person to please give it to a decision-maker.

“It was incredible how many phone calls I received!” she said. She had several interviews and got a “great job in medical sales.”

Another individual I personally counselled was zero for 100 in trying to crack the advertising ranks right out of college. She went to one of the top ad agencies in Minneapolis and offered to work for free for six months to get her foot in the door. It ended up in a permanent job.

One woman who had been out of work for four months saw an ad for her dream job with a local TV station. The standard tactic – a cover letter and her resume – netted absolutely nothing.

So she launched a more imaginative campaign, which included letters from the fellow she was dating, from her lawyer, from her 80-year-old mother, even from her priest, who wrote, “I’m

enclosing this in hopes that you will hire _______. It’s depressing to look at her sad face, and besides, we haven’t had a donation from her in months.”

She got the job.

Steve Schussler, founder of Rainforest Café and a good friend, had a dream of working in sales for a radio station in Miami. He went to a container company and purchased a wooden barrel large enough for him to fit in. Then he went to a costume shop and rented a Superman outfit, complete with blue tights, red shoes and cape.

He paid two friends to deliver him in the crate to the radio station manager’s office. As it turned out, the manager was in a board meeting, but they insisted he come out, which he did with the entire board. When they finally slid the lid away, Steve flew out of the crate like a jack-in-the-box, gasping for breath.

He smiled at everyone and announced, “I’m your new super salesman.” One of the board members said, “Son, you are the sickest person we’ve ever met.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Sifters and Irons When we watch the cooking shows on TV, we see the bakers sift the flour to make it fluffy and more able to easily combine with added ingredients. Not all of us still do this, but it is a sign of the homemakers professional baking skills Years ago the person doing the baking always shook the flour through a sifter. This procedure not only fluffed up the flour, but it also removed any unwanted items from the flour.

Flour didn’t always come in a sealed heavy paper sack. In earlier times it was moved from the flour mill to the retailer in barrels. Customers would bring sacks or metal containers to take the flour home. Sometimes the flour would be exposed to rather unfavorable sanitary conditions.

Mice would sometimes access the flour and create a mess. They would occasionally chew holes into the sacks, since they were frequently inhabitants of early homes. The mess they created would sometimes include “mouse droppings”. These items were not a desired part of the bakers desired ingredients. Shaking the flour though a sifter would remove these undesired items. Remember that economic conditions forced the early homes to not waste any savable ingredients.

Another reason to use the sifter was due to the weevil. When the homeowner would observe small moths flying around in their home, it commonly meant that somewhere in either raw flour or baked flour products there would be weevils.

These weevils hatch into moths. The weevils were light colored and about the size of a grain of rice. They were also

eliminated from flour by using the sifter.

Once they move into a home, they were usually difficult to remove. They were occasionally brought to the home in flour products purchased from retailers.

Some of us remember ironing before the steam iron was common in the home. The iron was a heavy, pointed piece of iron that was heated by being placed on the wood stove before the time of electricity. The first electric irons commonly were not steam irons.

As a result the homemaker would put water in a salt shaker and sprinkle the items that needed ironing, roll them up and pack them into a clothes basket.

After the moisture disbursed throughout items, they were ready to be ironed.

Many items of “good clothes,” dish towels, sheets, towels, underwear, work clothes and handkerchiefs were ironed.

Wrinkles had to be removed.

Today we are usually able to keep mice and weevils out of our homes. New cleaning chemicals and machines make home cleanliness much easier. Irons today eliminate the need to sprinkle clothes and there are many wrinkle free clothing items. Irons today do a great job of steam disbursal and are very easy to use. Most irons today are used very little or in some cases not at all. Wrinkles are more acceptable today.

One of my all-time favorite job stories happened years ago when my youngest daughter was graduating from the University of Michigan. Seated up in the rafters, I watched thousands of seniors parade across the stage collecting their sheepskins. Suddenly a roar went up from the crowd. A female student was walking across the stage with a placard on top of her graduation cap. In huge white letters were the words, “I need a job.” After the program ended, business people were falling all over themselves to give her their business cards.

Did she land a job because of her creativity? I don’t know, but I do know that 8,333 graduates without jobs sure wished they had thought of it first.

that will gradually create a big event in your life. If you want to achieve your goals, then keep these next things in mind.

When setting goals, be very specific in what you want to achieve. Include steps that will help you get there, too.

Being vague will only cause you to feel directionless and overwhelmed. Most people give up when these feelings arise.

Make your goals measurable. If you want to lose weight, don’t simply write down “lose weight” as a goal. Exactly how much weight do you want to lose?

What will it take in terms of exercise and dietary changes to make it happen?

Are your goals your goals? Only you can realistically set your own goals.

If your spouse, co-worker, or friend sets a goal for you, chances are you’re not going to achieve it. Taking ownership will give you more opportunity to meet your goal.

Also, set time limits for your goals.

Putting a time frame in place will help you set realistic goals. If you want to save a certain amount of money for a particular event, break it down and determine how much cash you need to put into your savings account each month leading up to that event.

And finally, put your goals and resolutions in writing. Putting them in writing will make you more likely to achieve them. Write down your goals, and review them often. This will give you motivation to make them reality.

I believe this is the process for success, Rick. Successful people reassess their lives regularly, and start living intentionally, in writing, and on purpose. Happy New Year!

Obituaries Doris Mae Vos

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Doris Mae Vos will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Church of St. Anthony in St. Anthony.

There will be a visitation held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at church prior to the Mass.

Doris’ grandchildren will serve as her honorary pallbearers. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Doris was born into eternal life on Monday, December 30, 2019 at her home near Albany, unexpectedly.

She was born on May 9, 1942, in Holdingford to Michael and Frances (Patrias) Tschida. On August 19, 1961, she was united in marriage to Linus Vos at St. Benedicts Church of Avon. Their union was blessed with three children: Cindy, Tammy, and Joel.

Doris was very proud to maintain her gardens as well as raising her countless chickens. She thoroughly enjoyed baking for her family as well as spending her time putting the pieces of a puzzle together.

Doris will always be remembered by her husband of over 50 years, Linus Vos; children, Cindy Fleischhacker, Tammy (Gary) Fischer, and Joel (Dierdra) Vos; grandchildren, Michelle Fleischhacker, Randy (Margaret) Fleischhacker, Jamie (Scott) Goebel, Trista (Joe) Stangler, Ashley (Adam) Stangler, Chrissy (Matt) Anderson, Glen Fischer, Rick Fischer, Aleysha Vos, Alexis Vos, Arianna Vos, and Axel Vos; great-grandchildren, Grace, Matthew & Caleb Fleischhacker, Benjamin Goebel, Kensi, Tori, & Eli Stangler, Kaleigh, Silas, & Cody Anderson, as well as Jaylyn & Carson Stangler, and their soon-to-be sibling, Baby Stangler; brothers, Mike, Bobby, and Jerry Tschida; sisters, Louise Terwey and Leona Farnkopf; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family and numerous friends.

Roman J. Hellermann, age 84 of Melrose, passed away u n e x p e c t e d l y, surrounded by his family on Friday, December 27, 2019 at the CentraCare Melrose Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 30 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Roman Joseph Hellermann was born February 4, 1935 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Rosina (Wessel) Hellermann. On February 12, 1962 he was united in marriage to Bernice Trisco at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Roman farmed five miles north of Melrose in Melrose Township and retired in 1992. Roman and Bernice moved to Melrose where Roman worked for Patty’s Catering from 1992 through 2009. Together they watered the flowers along the streets of Melrose for over fifteen years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Society, and St. Joseph’s Society.

Roman enjoyed fishing year-round, playing cards, having coffee at the café, taking an occasional trip to the casino, and was proud to be a John Deere man. Roman loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Bernice Hellermann of Melrose; children, Thomas (Sandy) Hellermann of Long Prairie, Barbara (Kevin) Zierden of New Munich, and Darlene (Alver) Schlangen of Paynesville; 10 grandchildren

and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Henry “Hank” Hellermann of Vadnais Heights, Elmer (Anna) Hellermann of Melrose, Dorothy (Alvin) Schneider of Sauk Centre, Simon (Mary) Hellermann of Sauk Centre, and Roselyn (Pete) Lehner of Shakopee; and sisters-in-law, Kathy Elfering of Melrose and Rita Hellermann of Sauk Centre.

Roman was preceded in death by parents; son, Darrell Hellermann on May 11, 1992; brothers, Paul Hellermann, Norbert Hellermann, and Richard Hellermann; and sisters, Mary Ann Primus, Loretta Hinnenkamp, and Marcella Frericks.

Serving as casket bearers were Emma Overman, Tom Herkenhoff, Brittany Schlangen, Brent Schlangen, Brandon Schlangen, Steve Frericks, Nikkita Edmond, and Mike Zierden. Cross bearer was Josh Hellermann and scripture bearer was Vern Frericks. Honorary bearer was Kyle Zierden. The reader was Amanda Rosengren and petitions were read by Hailey and Kallie Frericks. Serving as gift bearers were Dia Hellermann, Paisley Hellermann, Dylan Rahn, and Allyson Rahn.

Jeffery G. Kalis

Jeffery G. Kalis, 33 year old resident of Bowlus, MN passed away Saturday, December 28, 2019 as a result of an auto accident in Stearns County, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Father Jeremy Theis officiating.

Burial will take place in the St. Edward’s Parish Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4-8 P.M. on Friday and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN. Parish Prayers will be prayed at 4:00 P.M. on Friday at the Church.

Jeff was born on October 4, 1986 to George and Kathy (Sobania) Kalis of Bowlus, MN. He was raised in Bowlus and attended school in Upsala, graduating out of Royalton MN. After graduation, he began working at Polar Tank and Trailer in Opole, MN where he has been employed for the last 14 years. Jeff enjoyed four-wheeling,

farming, hunting, snowmobiling and being with family and friends. As we all know, Jeff had a love for John Deere and Chevy trucks as well. He loved spending time at his place back across “his” river. Jeff loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, teaching them the things he knew. He will always be remembered for his quick, fast phrases. Jeff was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Beverly J. “Bev” Scherping Beverly J. “Bev” Scherping, age 77 of Freeport, passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer on Monday, December 30, 2019 at CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Family interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. from the Christian Mothers Friday evening at the church.

Beverly Jean Pierskalla was born March 8, 1942 in San Pedro, California to Phillip and Marie (Korman) Pierskalla. She graduated from Holdingford High School.

Bev married Everett Scherping on June 21, 1960 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel, Minnesota. She was the bookkeeper for Scherping Electric for 45 years.

Bev was a fantastic cook. She enjoyed quilting and gardening flowers. Bev always gave her heart and was always making sure ed Guarante Payout!

On December 26, 2019 at 10:51 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a shed on fire at Tom’s Refuse located at 38164 Thunder Road in Millwood Township.

Keith Frank, 58, of Pequot Lakes, was staying in a camper near the shed.

When he lost power, he went to check on the electrical breaker system and noticed the shed was on fire. The shed and its contents were heavily damaged.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

No one was injured.

Assisting agencies include Melrose Fire Department, Freeport Fire Department, Sauk Centre Fire Department and Melrose Ambulance.

Swanville High School ExCEL Award Nominees Juniors R e b e k a h Muhlenkamp and Alexander Bellefeuille have been selected as this year’s Swanville High School ExCEL nominees.

The ExCEL award, which stands for excellence Rebekah Muhlenkamp in community, education and leadership, is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and are model citizens. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one female and one male for the ExCEL Award.

Nominees must be a junior in high school, make satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in an MSHSL fine arts or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in their school and volunteer in their community.

Rebekah Muhlenkamp, daughter of Levi and Margaret, has participated in band, fall play, speech, volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field. She also is on Student Council,

is a Class Officer and has been a part of homecoming and prom committees. Rebekah is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll as well. She spends time volunteering at the Pine Bend Association, Camp Ripley Alexander Bellefeuille Memorial Day Program, Blood Drives and Lions Club in Swanville.

Alexander Bellefeuille, son of Kris and Molly, has participated in football, basketball, baseball, robotics and the Fall play. He is also on Student Council and has been a part of homecoming and prom committees. Alex is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll as well. He spends time volunteering with Boy Scouts, Church, Blood Drives, Camp Ripley Memorial Day Program and Flag Football.

An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select the state ExCEL Award recipient in January. ExCEL winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the upcoming winter state tournaments.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2003 Chevy Venture and I keep getting moisture on the driver’s side floor. I don’t know where it’s coming from.

I thought if you could lead me in the right direction maybe it wouldn’t be so costly. I read your column in the Vandalia leader from Vandalia, Mo. - Bert in Curryville, Missouri Dear Bert, To find water leaks it takes some time, and here is one way we do it. Begin by mixing up some very sudsy dish soap in a water bucket. Next start the car and turn the blower to the vent position (Not A/C) and set the blower on high. Close all the windows and doors then pour the mixture around any spot that is joined together like window trim, door seals, bolts that are exposed, etc. If you see air bubbles coming out then you know you have a leak. A few bubbles around door handles are normal but door seals are not. Once you find the leak it will have to be addressed according to where it is. These vehicles have come to us with leaking windshields and door seals as well. If your vehicle has a sunroof you will want to make sure the drains for the roof are clear of obstructions. The drains are located close to the front edge of the door and also on the rear edge of the doors and run from the roof to under the car.

huge snowfall amount each year but we can get our share of slippery roads and ice. What should I be looking for if I go this route and are there any things you would suggest?

-Kate in Oklahoma City Dear Kate, On an all-wheel drive car a good set of all-season tires perform very well but many people like yourself want the very best traction they can get so they go with a second set of tires. This requires one of two things, either removing and remounting and balancing the tires every season or a second set of wheels. Both ways have their pros and cons but we prefer a second set of wheels for the ease of changing and less chance of damage to a tire. There is a one-time cost involved in the wheels though but sometimes less expensive alternatives can be found for the winter months. You may even go with some fancy aftermarket units for summer.

For driving on ice and snow many manufactures offer a specialized tire that is purpose made and is best used just in the winter months as they wear faster on dry pavement. Ask your tire dealer which is best for you.

Marilyn Douvier

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Marilyn Douvier, age 86 of St. Joseph, was held Friday, December 27 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Marilyn died Sunday at the St.

Cloud Hospital.

Marilyn was born August 30, 1933 in Holdingford to Raymond and Victoria (Stegura) Paggen. She married Leo Douvier on September 23, 1954 in the St. Stephen Catholic Church in St. Stephen. The couple lived in St. Paul from 1954 until 1963 when they moved to St. Joseph. Marilyn worked in the shipping department at Fingerhut for several years.

Marilyn enjoyed spending time with her family. She spent time baking, gardening

and shopping, which was her favorite. She was a member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the Christian Women.

Marilyn is survived by her children; Jerry (Shannon) Douvier, Rice; Duane Douvier, St. Joseph and Sherry (Lynell) Sobania, Holdingford. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Claudette (Joseph) Czech, Gilman; Millie May, Holdingford; Ronald (Arlene) Paggen, Opole; Ben (Dorothy) Paggen, St. Stephen, Ray (Sandy) Paggen, St. Stephen; Joe (Diane) Paggen, St. Stephen and grandchildren; Eli Sobania, Alex Sobania, Tom Douvier, Samantha Wenning, Amanda Douvier, Ben Douvier and Grady Christopher.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leo Douvier in 1997, her daughter, Linda Douvier, her brothers and sisters, Jim Paggen, Richard Paggen, Dennis Paggen, Dave Paggen, Delphine Stoermann and Kenneth Paggen.

Marilyn’s favorite holiday was Christmas along with decorating and baking. Merry Christmas, Mom!

Sister Mary Paula Pohlmann Sister Mary Paula Pohlmann, 91, died on December 26, at Alverna Apartments, Little Falls, Minn.

Rita Agnes Pohlmann was born on March 2, 1928, in Melrose, Minn. She was the fourth of six children born to the late Joseph and Mary (Soenneker) Pohlmann. She attended rural elementary schools and then attended St. Francis High School, graduating in 1946. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1948, and was given the name, Sister Mary Paula.

She was a Franciscan Sister for 71 years.

Sister Paula became a registered nurse following studies at St. Francis School of Nursing, Breckenridge, Minn. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. She ministered as a staff nurse, instructor, nursing service director, personnel director and administrator in Breckenridge and Little Falls, and in Dodgeville, Wis. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Catholic Health Association for several years. She also served as Director of Health

Shawn M. Winkels

Services celebrating the life of Shawn M. Winkels, age 29 of St. Cloud, formerly of Cold Spring, will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 4 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albany. Shawn died unexpectedly at his home on December 22.

There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM, Friday, January 3 at the MillerCarlin Funeral Home in Albany and again after 12:00 Noon, Saturday at the church.

Shawn was born July 25, 1990 in St.

Services for the Franciscan Sisters. In 1976, she was elected Community Minister and she served in that capacity for eight years.

At the completion of her term, she moved to Berkeley, Calif., and studied massage.

She was a massage therapist and Trager Practitioner in Berkeley for 22 years. She then spent several years at Clare’s Well in Annandale, continuing her massage ministry. She moved to Little Falls in 2018, where she pursued an active retirement.

Sister Paula was a woman of integrity and discernment who used her many talents in service to her religious community through leadership in the health care field.

She had a great love and a deep respect for each person with whom she connected, and preferred one-to-one contacts. She had a great love for nature in all its forms and especially enjoyed watching the eastern sky for the first glimpse of sunlight followed with spectacular colorful surprises.

Sister Paula was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Valeria Boecker, Eddie, Lawrence and Joseph.

Survivors include her sister Marie Dobmeier, nieces, nephews and her Franciscan Community.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Convent on January 4, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at St. Francis Convent on January 3, from 4-8 p.m., with a Franciscan prayer service at 7 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral on January 4, at 11 a.m.

Donations to Franciscan Sisters ministries preferred.

Howard M. Thielman

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Howard M. Thielman, age 93, of St. Joseph who passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House. Rev. Gregory Miller, OSB will officiate and Rev. William Skudlarek will concelebrate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Howard was born July 6, 1926 to Nicholas and Frances (Wellenstein) Thielman in Avon. He married Colleen B. Graham on May 25, 1949 in St. Cloud.

Howard proudly served in the Navy during World War II. He later owned and operated the Thielman Hardware Store, Thielman Painting as well as Thielman Funeral Home in Avon. Howard was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Avon Fire Department, Avon American Legion post 538, Avon Lions, and the Knights of Columbus. He dearly loved his family and will be missed by all.

Survivors include his children, Cathleen (Lonnie) Blair of Buffalo, Maren (Jeff) Biegert of Maple Grove, Peggy of St. Cloud and Paul of Minnetonka; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brothers, Fr. Kenneth of Melrose, Lowell (Phyllis) of Avon, and Bro. Nicholas of Notre Dame, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Colleen in 2019; son, Thomas in 2017; granddaughter, Jennifer Mergen in 1978 and several other siblings.

Joan C. Dobmeier, age 72, of Saint Rosa, died peacefully D e c e m b e r 25, 2019 at CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, January 3, 2020 at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz presiding. Entombment for the immediate family will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday morning in the church gathering area.

Joan Catherine Dobmeier was born July 23, 1947, at home in Saint Rosa, Minnesota, the daughter of Bernard “Ben” and Rose (Austing) Stoermann.

On February 19, 1966, Joan was united in marriage to Allen Dobmeier in Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church. For ten years, Joan was employed at Fingerhut and then sewed for Stearns Manufacturing for 28 years until she retired.

Joan was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church in St. Rosa and a Christian

Mother. She enjoyed watching Minnesota Twins baseball, eating out at small family diners and going to the casino on occasion. Joan ALWAYS had a welcome hug for others and fruit snacks for children.

She was a devoted wife to Allen, and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and one great grandson.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of 53 years, Allen of Saint Rosa; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dave Klassen of Melrose and Joyce and Ben Tiemann of Dassel; grandchildren, Amanda, Mitchell, Molly, Levi, and Carlee; great grandson, Leo; brothers, Raymond (Roseanne) Stoermann of Saint Rosa, Roger (Susan) Stoermann of Melrose, and Marvin Stoermann (Kristi Stock) of Holdingford; sisters, Diane (Jerry) Middendorf of Sauk Centre, Bernice (Herman) Ebnet of Holdingford, and Ellie (David) Boecker of Saint Rosa; sister-inlaw, Shirley Stoermann of Melrose; and other relatives and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Rose Stoermann and one brother, Roy Stoermann.

6 Key Character Traits of People Who Win with Money

Both parents work, and they make good money.

From the outside, life looks good — a new Tahoe, a big house, and private schools for the kids. But in reality, the Smiths are barely scraping by. With the help of credit cards and car loans, they spend more money than they make, and they’re just one financial emergency away from being in serious trouble.

Then, there’s the Williams family.

One parent works, and makes decent money, while the other stays at home and takes care of the kids. The Williams family lives on a budget, and even though they still have a lot of student loan debt, they’ve cut the balance in half during the last two years. They have a small emergency fund saved, and they expect to be out of debt completely in two years.

So, what do you think is the difference between the Smiths and the Williamses? Why is one family able to pay off thousands of dollars in debt on a tight budget, while another family barely gets by week after week? Why does one person succeed with money, while another person struggles?

There are dozens of factors, but, many times, it comes down to these key characteristics.

They’re patient. People who win with money are patient. They can delay a short-term pleasure for a long-term gain. In other words, they can walk right by the shoe section without blinking.

They know $100 shoes would be nice, but they have higher priorities. That’s because they understand the bigger picture. It’s about retirement and college funds and that beach vacation they’re dreaming about. Believe me, I love the shoe section. But when I stop and pick up a pair of designer shoes in a store, I ask myself if we’ve budgeted for this and if buying that pair of shoes effect our priorities.

They’re confident. When you’re in control of your money, you’re confident.

You also don’t care when other people look down their noses at you, because you’re cutting back on lifestyle costs.

Keeping up with the Joneses? Forget about it! One of the mistakes people make is to fall into the social media comparison game. You pull up Instagram and see beautiful photos from your friend Sarah’s Caribbean cruise. Meanwhile, you haven’t been on vacation in a year because you’re working so hard to get out of debt. But confident people stay focused on their goals and understand that sacrifices are temporary. They know they’ll be able to take that cruise soon enough!

They’re goal-oriented. People who win with money approach goals with incredible passion. Save $1,000? Check.

Get out of debt? Check. Build a full emergency fund? Check. For them, setting goals is fun. This isn’t some special skill you’re born with. Anyone can develop the habit of goal-setting, and here

are a few basic tips.

Write them down and put them in a visible spot. Seeing your goals written out every day will keep them at the front of your mind.

Be specific. Exactly how much debt do you want to pay off each month?

How much weight do you want to lose each month?

Set a time limit. Where’s your finish line? And, remember, be realistic. You’ll probably need more than a month to get out of debt!

They’re responsible. They get it.

They understand in order to get to where they want to be financially, they might have to take a year off from vacation, skip dining out for a few months, or cut back on grocery spending. And honestly, couldn’t we all cut back on grocery spending? When I talk with people about their budgets, food is one of the main areas where people overspend — either at the grocery store or dining out.

Responsible people are willing to look at their money situation and make smart choices. I know sometimes “adulting” isn’t fun. But those smaller, “boring” decisions, like budgeting and staying on top of your account balance, can put you in a place to have a lot more fun later.

That’s becoming a theme here, isn’t it?

They aren’t materialistic. They understand that you can have a bunch of stuff without being wealthy, and you can be wealthy without owning a bunch of stuff. Big houses, nice cars, and fancy vacations are perfectly fine, but someone who wins with money understands all those things by themselves don’t bring happiness. They live their lives

with that in mind. That doesn’t mean they’re against owning stuff, or they think wealthy people are somehow “evil,” they just get the fact that money isn’t everything.

They’re willing to sacrifice. They understand budget cuts are just temporary. Five years from now, once they’re out of debt and winning with money, they’ll look back on those sacrifices with a smile. This is a big one, and it works closely with patience and responsibility. Sacrifice can’t happen if you aren’t patient or responsible, because you can’t get past the immediate rush of having something or doing something right now. When it comes to sacrificing with money, you must look past today.

The great thing about these characteristics is you can develop them. Even if you aren’t naturally patient, or you aren’t a big goal setter, you can develop these character traits by working to create new habits in your life.

And when these habits turn into character traits, you’ll be well on your way toward winning with money for good!

He enjoyed shooting sporting clays, hunting, fishing, being outside, mowing – making sure there are straight lines, being with family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Avon, MN; sons, Matt (Laura) Fischer of Litchfield, MN; Nick (Jenny) Fischer of Albany, MN; siblings, Pete (Barb) Fischer of Albany, MN; Sharon (Jerry) Ahles of Avon, MN; Liz (Rich) Mohs of Avon, MN; Laur (Bill) Weisman of Chanhassen, MN; 3 grandchildren, Ella, Luke and Abby.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sauk Centre woman extricated from vehicle after crash: December 28, 2019: At 4:36 p.m. deputies responded to a crash with injuries on County Road 17 near County Road 153 in Krain Township.

Judy Peifer, 68, of Sauk Centre was driving her 2001 Ford Windstar westbound on County Road 17 when she lost control due to heavy slush on the road.

The vehicle spun out across the roadway and rolled onto its side in the eastbound ditch. Ms. Peifer was trapped in the vehicle. Freeport Fire and Rescue was able to extricate her from the vehicle.

Ms. Peifer was transported to the Melrose Hospital by Melrose Ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Ms. Peifer was wearing her seat belt.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

According to Sheriff Soyka, the road conditions have continued to deteriorate since Friday night. Our Office has responded to numerous vehicles in the ditch and crashes this weekend. We

strongly advise people not to travel until conditions improve.

Man killed in single vehicle crash near Opole: December 28, 2019: At approximately 4:21 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a crash with injuries at the intersection of 125th Avenue and 440th Street in Brockway Township, which is 1 mile north of Opole. The caller reported a crashed vehicle in the tree line and a deceased male victim.

Deputies arrived and located a deceased male partially ejected from the vehicle. The cause of the crash, the manner of death, and the full identification of the victim is currently being investigated.

The victim has been identified as Jeffery George Kalis, 33, of Royalton.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

Holdingford Fire and Rescue and Mayo Ambulance assisted.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

December 31, 2019: Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen announced that his office, in cooperation with all local police departments in the county, have recently completed the annual Predatory Offender Registration (POR) verifications for Morrison County. Each year the sheriff’s office organizes a verification check for all predatory offenders who are on the registry and residing within the county. It is important to note that Minnesota only began registering predatory offenders in 1991 and did not assign risk level until 1997. Only those offenders who have been sentenced to prison and who were released after January 1, 1997 have been assigned a risk level. Offenders sentenced to probation or juvenile offenders are not assigned a risk level. Level 1 offenders are those deemed by Department of Corrections officials as those least likely to re-offend while Level 3 offenders are considered most likely to re-offend.

During the most recent round of checks, multiple predatory offenders were checked in Morrison County. 51 predatory offenders were checked by the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, Pierz Police Department, Motley Police Department and Royalton Police Department. Of that number; 24 were Level 1 offenders, 5 were Level 2, 1 was Level 3 and 21 offenders were not

assigned a risk level. 48 predatory offenders were checked by the Little Falls Police Department, which are not part of the breakdown.

All but one individual was found to be compliant with conditions imposed upon them. 30-year-old Harlan Davis Swanson has charges pending through the Morrison County Attorney’s Office for failing to register his current address, which is a felony. According to Sheriff Larsen it is important for us to keep tabs on the predatory offender registry. “I feel it is extremely important that these people remain aware that we know who they are, and our office will continue to hold them accountable.”
