A corp stop on the water main rusted out and popped loose causing a water leakage in Grey Eagle. The leakage caused the water tower to run low. When the electricity went out for 2-1/2 hours Tuesday afternoon, Andy Bartkowicz - Grey Eagle City Water Operator and Maintenance Supervisor got the generators up and running. It took between 4-5 a.m. Wednesday morning for the water level to catch up to have water pressure. The repairs were done Wednesday morning with subzero temperature and wind chill. and I were in a cart being pulled by a camel and led by a native driver. He had a very long rope guiding the camel in one hand, while he was talking on his cell phone with the other. That’s India today!

The average camel stands 7’1” at the hump. That’s exactly as tall as Shaquille O’Neal.

Sound pretty big? Depends on your vantage point.

Indians shrewdly adjust expectations versus results. An old Hindu adage holds: “When a camel is at the foot of a mountain then judge his height.”

The Indian economy has advanced at 9-10% in recent years. Now it’s slowed to 5-6%. Indians think they’re in trouble . . . measuring that growth “camel” against the recent past. Hey, wouldn’t we in the United States love to be in that sort of trouble?

The Young Presidents Organization/ World President’s Organization – 390 strong – journeyed to New Delhi for a recent university event. Indian executives, professionals and academics dazzled my colleagues and me with mind-blowing insights. Take Amity University – which I also visited. Its huge 20,000-student campus has another large campus snuggled close to it. The most stunning number is the one

million avid learners Amity has enrolled in 240 programs on 40 campuses and six countries, plus online.

When I revisited the Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai, I was even more taken by this tribute to modern India’s founding father than I was decades earlier. Emblazoned on the wall are Mahatma Gandhi’s immortal words: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

Priceless wisdom for a continuouslearning freak as I am. India will need each one of those lessons as its population surpasses China’s in the near future.

Megan weighed 6 pounds and measured 19 ½ inches in length.

Having once served as a Miss America pageant judge, I was fascinated to watch Nina Davuluri crowned as the first Miss America of Indian descent in September. Nina, who aspires to be a cardiologist, is a pragmatist. Winning an earlier pageant competition landed a scholarship enabling her “debt-free” college graduation.

Survivors include her husband, Norbert Schneider of Melrose; children, Mary (Bill) Spanier of Melrose, Deb (Roy) Denne of Avon, Gene (Molly) Schneider of Melrose, Ken (Katy Madden) Schneider of Melrose, Amy Hiltner of Richmond, Diane (Peter) Gruber of Melrose, Dona (Dana) Buttenhoff of Maple Lake, Ruth (Al) Hoeschen of Apple Valley, Sara (Sam) Uphoff of Elk River, and Eva (Gene) Gruber of Richmond; 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Fr. Oscar Schoenberg of Onamia, Br. Walter Schoenberg of Dubuque, Iowa, Helen Mueller of Paynesville, and Br. Leo Schoenberg of Onamia.

M.J. was in preceded in death by her parents; infant twin sons; grandsons, Cahil Schneider and Jake Uphoff; brothers, Fr. Martin Schoenberg, and Victor Schoenberg; two infant brothers, John and Lawrence Schoenberg; sisters, Sr. Lucy Schoenberg and Flora Eull; and son-inlaw, Paul Hiltner.

Serving as casket bearers were Ryan Spanier, Justin Schneider, Ross Denne, Brett Gruber, Drew Hoeschen, and Blake Hoeschen. Cross bearer was Eric Spanier and scripture bearer was Kaitlyn Gruber.

Mary Jane “M.J.” Schneider, age 84 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Monday, January 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Mary Jane Schoenberg was born August 24, 1929 in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to William and Eleanore (Braun) Schoenberg. She was united in marriage to Norbert Schneider on August 29, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. M.J. was a foster grandparent for the past 24 years and was fondly known as “Grandma M.J.” She was also an active volunteer at the Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, and the St. Elizabeth’s Society.

M.J. enjoyed visiting with her family and friends, crocheting, and loved playing cards. Her greatest love was her husband

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Gerald “Jerry” Albert Jacobs, age 69 of Opole will take place at 11 AM Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Father Gregory Mastey will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the mass.

Jerry died peacefully in his home Sunday morning with his family by his side. There will be a visitation from 10 AM until the time of the service Thursday morning at the church. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Holdingford.

Bill L. Schmidtke, age 72 of Grey Eagle, died Monday, January 20, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Memorial services will be held at be at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 25 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. Kevin Mann officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. Military Honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Bill Leo Schmidtke was born May 8, 1941 in Fairmont, Minnesota to William and Jennie (Atwell) Schmidtke. Bill served in U.S. Navy for over 10 years during Vietnam. He married Marilyn Hanscom at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Bill loved the outdoors, especially trapping, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed singing

Upsala and later married Mary Kurtz. In life, Jerry worked at a variety of places including Landy Packing, Robel Packing, and Fingerhut all while farming on his family farm and custom baling for many years. Jerry was a very religious man placing his faith and his church above all else. He was a very active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Mary Jacobs, Opole; his children Francie (Jared) Jackels, Sauk Rapids; Nicholas Jacobs, Holdingford; Michael (Ashley) Jacobs, Opole; his grandchildren Tyler, Shannon, Dalton, Cole, Baxter, Leo, Matthew, Anastasia, and his siblings Vernon (Mary) Jacobs, Melrose; Marion Kurtz, Albany; Carol Ann Ritter, Long Prairie.

He is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Veronica Jacobs, his sisters Delores Roerick, Darlene Ahrens, Lillian Valcamp, his brothers Virgil Jacobs, LaVern Jacobs (infant), and his nephew Leo Jacobs.

Bill truly enjoyed playing Santa Claus for many families throughout the years in the Grey Eagle, Melrose, and Long Prairie area on Christmas Eve. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. Bill was a lifetime member of the Long Prairie VFW Post 1140 and a member of The Trappers Association.

Survivors include his sisters, Henrietta Davenport of Clinton, Maryland, Dorothy Arndt of Buena Park, California, Genevieve (Gordon) Hannaman of Melrose, and Florence Ann Kehr of Beaver, Utah; uncles, Max McIntire and Delbert McIntire of Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Schmidtke; parents; brothers, Arthur Schmidtke and Samuel Schmidtke; sisters, Sandra Asmus and Rozella Millsaps; and infant son, Bill Schmidtke.

Serving as urn bearers will be William Langford and Larry Hannaman.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Clara M. Maile

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 am on Monday, January 20th, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Clara M. Maile, 95, who passed away on Wednesday. Rev. Blane Wasnie O.S.B. officiated and burial was in

the parish cemetery.

Clara was born in Lake Henry, Minnesota to Joseph and Bertha (Moser) Fuchs. She married Peter P. Maile on October 2, 1934 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Clara was a homemaker and lived in the Avon area most of her life. Her life centered around her family. She especially enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren.

Clara was a gardener and a baseball fan. She

followed the Avon Lakers baseball team, particularly when her children played on the team. Clara was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish and Christian Women.

Clara is survived by her children, CeCelia (Linus) Zimmerman of Siera Vista, AZ, Clara (David) Blattner Sr. of Avon, LaVern (Sharon) Maile of Cold Spring, Arnold (Lois) Maile of Washington, IL, Linda (Cliff) Borgerding of Avon, Leon (Brigid) Maile of Avon; daughter-in-law, Rosie Maile of Avon; sister, Catherine Wiechman and brother Joseph Fuchs both of Avon; 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Peter on May 18, 1987; son, Edwin, daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and James Wegman; three grandchildren; brothers, Ed, Clem, Raymond, Martin, and Leo Fuchs; and sisters Eleanor Maile and Anna Doll.

Dear Olivia, I don’t usually cheat on the smallest to largest progression of the debt snowball, but I’d recommend moving these debts to the top of the list.

Both state and federal taxes come with ridiculous penalties and interest rates, and the authorities at either level have virtually unlimited power at their disposal to screw with your life if something bad happens. The IRS can actually take your money without suing you. So, you don’t want to become a blip on their radar screen by being late with payments.

Get it cleaned up as quickly as possible, Olivia. You don’t want to mess around with these guys!

planning. If the accounts were opened in Florida, but you both lived in Oregon at the time of his death, technically the estate would be probated in Oregon.

That may be what has to happen. If so, a judge would appoint you as executor.

As executor, you can close the accounts and disperse any money to the rightful heir—which is you.

Be prepared, though. It may take somewhere between $250 and $500 in attorney fees and court costs to make this happen. If you’re lucky, you might get a simple motion from the court that would cost you next to nothing. But find a good estate planning attorney who knows Oregon law inside and out. Estate laws and probate laws differ from state to state, and Florida and Oregon both have some weird laws in these areas.

This probably seems like a lot of trouble, but you have to remember the banks are simply trying to protect themselves and follow the law. Anyone could walk in with a death certificate (they’re public record), and claim to be an heir. So, they have to have a court document in order to avoid any potential liability.

Matt says that his favorite class in school is math, because it is fun and it is easy to ask questions. But he says his most valuable activity at school is football, because it teaches you leadership, responsibility, and how to set goals.

Matt’s future plans include taking over the farm or going to school to be an Animal Nutritionist. His advice for his classmates is to set goals and finish them. Also take life one day at a time and live everyday to the fullest.

Area students named to Dean’s Lists Marci Sortor, Dean and Provost of St. Olaf College, has named Zachary Meer from Albany to the St. Olaf College Dean’s list for the Fall 2013 semester. Meer is a Social Work major. He is a graduate of Albany Area Senior High School and the son of Daniel and Sandra Meer .

The Dean’s list recognizes students with a semester grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4-point scale. Dean Sortor stated, “These students have distinguished themselves among a talented and highly qualified student body. We celebrate their success in gaining recognition for academic excellence.”

It was the first day of geography class. The teacher was trying to get the class involved in a lively discussion.

“What is the shape of the world?” she asked.

Immediately, James held up his hand and said, “My Dad says it’s in terrible shape!” And most people would seem to agree with his dad.

Years ago a Psalmist gave us a reason for the condition of the world: “The kings and rulers of the earth,” he said, “take their stand together against the Lord...and His Anointed One.” This Psalm points to the One who was to come - the Messiah. In it we find a description of Jesus - His life, death, resurrection and future reign. This Psalm also describes the rebellion of the nations of the world and their refusal to be obedient to the Word of God. The author wanted his readers to know and understand that God would fulfill His promises of peace and hope, grace and mercy, love and salvation. God, speaking to us through this Psalm, gave us His assurance that He is the One who is in control of all things - past, present and future.

He wants us to know that through His Word we can become free from the worries and cares of this world and be certain of being with Him in eternity.

“Serve the Lord with reverent fear,” said the Psalmist, and “submit to God’s royal Son...and there will be joy for all who find protection in Him.”

Local Municipality Minutes Burnhamville Township December 23, 2013 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held December 23, 2013 at Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by Chairman Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering, Justin Sieben and Mark Sieben.

Sup. Thompson made a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of November 26, 2013.

Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Correspondence included a survey of Todd County planning and zoning proposed changes in zoning. This topic will be tabled for later to give board members more time to investigate the effects of changes to this township.

The board members were reminded the opening for filing for office is coming up.

A resident asked the board to send a letter stating that the township does maintain a public road to his property.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4886 through 4893: Rev. $586.89; R&B $5,831.35. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The board received a letter from the Swanville/Sobieski Lions requesting a beer license for the fishing derby on Long Lake February 22, 2014. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the liquor license. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

tractor will monitor the road conditions. With the snow already this month the contractor is trying to push back the snow in areas to make sure he has room to push the additional snow as it comes this season.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that he felt Herdering could be doing a better job of getting the snow off of 341st. He also reported he had visited with the county engineer who felt it was not a good idea for the township to purchase a brush cutter and that renting may be a better option for the township. Ray stated the logs along Breezy Drive needed to be removed immediately. The board instructed the clerk to send them a letter. The Aspen Drive lawsuit was discussed and it was decided to wait and see what they were asking of the township. The board reviewed letters from Todd County P&Z and then discussed the no net gain meeting that Ray attended. He felt it would be a good idea for the township to pass a resolution stating that all land that was being donated /gifted to a non-profit would have to come before the board for approval. Board members were given information to study before the next meeting.

Additional agenda items: Weed report was completed. Audit meeting was planned for the second Monday in February.

Area residents receive Scholarships from Legislative Update -By State Rep. Ron Kresha the University of Minnesota, Morris Several area residents who attend the University of Minnesota, Morris received scholarships for the 2013–14 academic year.

Audrey Blommel, of Freeport is the recipient of the Elmer and Viola Nelson Scholarship. Glenn Nelson and his wife, Margaret Dewar, established the Elmer and Viola Nelson Scholarship in honor of Glenn’s mother, the late Viola Nelson, and in memory of his father, Elmer Nelson. Elmer graduated in 1928 from the University of Minnesota West Central School of Agriculture, a boarding high school that made its home on the Morris campus until 1963. The scholarship is awarded to students from west central Minnesota. Blommel, will graduate from Morris in 2017 with a degree in biology.

Kari Haynes, of Albany is the recipient of the UMM Alumni Association Academic Scholarship, Make A Difference Scholarship. Many UMM alumni make contributions to the Morris Scholarship Fund through Alumni Annual Giving. Through their collective efforts, they have made it possible for students to receive scholarships based on academic merit. Funded by gifts to the Morris Scholarship Endowment Fund, this scholarship is awarded to meritorious first-year students. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic records, leadership abilities, exceptional test scores, and potential to make a difference in the future. Haynes, will graduate from Morris in 2017 with a degree in English.

Scholarships Mark Sticha graduated from UMM in 1975 with majors in political science, sociology, and economics.

Originally from Clarissa, Mark believes that the liberal arts education he received at UMM prepared him to achieve his career goals. To honor his parents, longtime Clarissa area farmers Milo and LaVerne Sticha, Mark established an endowed scholarship in 1998 for fulltime students from Todd County with preference to first-year students from a working farm. In 2004 Mark established a second scholarship open to all students from Todd County. A strong supporter of UMM, he hopes that by establishing these scholarships, students from Todd County will be encouraged to attend and ultimately graduate from UMM. Hulinsky, will graduate from Morris in 2014 with a degree in economics, management (financial and organizational management).

More than 300 donors, scholarship recipients and family members attended the annual Scholarship Jubilee on November 16, a celebration to honor Morris’s generous scholarship donors and talented scholarship recipients.

Grassroots allies work together to keep grass on the land

Protecting grassland and wetland habitat is one of the most critical environmental challenges facing Minnesota.

In response, local teams have formed to consider common sense solutions to keep grass on the land, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

These 10 new teams - working closely across western Minnesota with farmers, landowners, local officials and citizens will promote grassland conservation and grass-based agriculture as outlined in the state’s prairie conservation plan.

managers and partners who know the lay of the land and what will work in their communities,” said the DNR’s Marybeth Block, who coordinates efforts to implement grassland elements of the prairie conservation plan. “These folks already have relationships with many landowners and producers, and they’re reaching out in a coordinated manner to those who may not be aware of the conservation and management options out there.”

The prairie conservation plan demonstrates unprecedented cooperation between federal agencies, state agencies and conservation organizations. The plan addresses the millions of acres of grassland and wetland which have been lost in Minnesota over the past 150 years and creates a vision of connected grassland and wetland habitat from Canada to Iowa.

Yesterday I was proud to attend the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) March for Life rally in St. Paul with my youngest daughter Ainsley.

Due to the frigid weather the rally had to be moved indoors, but that hardly dampened the enthusiasm of the hundreds of Minnesotans who turned out to rally for such an important cause.

Protecting the unborn is a cause that Minnesotans from all walks of life support, and a cause that oftentimes can transcend party lines. Last year in the House, Republicans partnered with a coalition of pro-life Democrats to pass a number of pro-life amendments to bills such as the Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange, now known as MNsure. Unfortunately there weren’t enough prolife Democrats in the Senate, and those provisions were ultimately stripped out of the final bill.

You can count on me to continue to stand for life and protect the unborn this session.

Earlier this week I attended an allschool, all-community anti-bullying program in Swanville. The program is known as the Olweus Bully Prevention Program, and is intended to reach the entire community - not just the schools.

The program aims to improve peer relations among students, and make sure that parents and community members step up to do their part.

I applaud the Swanville Community for taking initiative and taking steps to prevent bullying in their schools and around their community. Next session,

the legislature is likely to take up a bill related to bullying. It’s likely to be a one-size-fits-all solution that won’t do much to address the fundamental causes of bullying, but rather increases bureaucracy and spending at the Minnesota Department of Education. I believe school districts and local communities are best equipped to tackle the bullying problems in our schools - not the state government.

Finally, in the spirit of education and standing up for our children, I am supporting legislation to expand early childhood scholarships. This bill will allow parents to have a choice in the most formative years of their children’s education. Most of a child’s language is formed before the age of five and children who are not read to and educated fall behind and never recover. Providing our next generation of children with a strong foundation for education will help alleviate the academic gap. Standing up for our youngest children, whether they are born or unborn is in my DNA. Giving parents the right to choose how to educate and where is just the right thing to do.

It’s almost a month until session starts again. The legislature returns on February 25th, and I’m looking forward to getting back to work for our community.
