Holiday recovery: Get back to work with less stress By Harvey Mackay A lecturer on stress management raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?” Answers from the audience ranged from 20 grams to 500 grams.

“The absolute weight doesn’t matter.” replied the lecturer. ”It depends on how long you try to hold it.

“If I hold it for a minute,” he said, “that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the

same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

The lecturer continued, “That’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.”

I used this story in my column nine years ago, and I feel it’s just as important today. So when you leave work today, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.

Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can.

Relax; pick them up later after you’ve rested. Life is short. Enjoy it.

Stress is part of life. A certain amount of stress is normal, even useful. Deadlines are stressful for many, but they also motivate people to finish projects and even feel some sense of accomplishment. Sometimes such pressure is effective in fostering teamwork – the notion that we’re all in this together. Team members share the stress and empathize with each other, and feed off each other’s energy.

That’s the upside of stress. But when stress results from overwork, unreasonable demands and impossible

expectations, it can affect everything from customer relations to personal problems to health issues. Can anything be worth that?

While your mind may still be on a holiday schedule, you may not feel ready to get back into the groove. Your job (and your boss) won’t wait, though.

Here’s how to get past the holiday bustle and New Year’s doldrums: • Review your goals. Look back at what you accomplished the previous year. What remains to be done? Spend some time setting new objectives for the coming 12 months. This should help you get charged up for the future.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 activities for a few days and identify tasks that waste time and leave you feeling drained. Eliminate what you can, and look for strategies to manage what you’re stuck with.

• Set priorities. Look at what’s most important to get done now. Achieving a fresh goal will improve your spirits and remind you of what you’re good at.

• Commit to work/life balance.

Make one of your resolutions to balance the demands of your job and your personal life more equitably. You’ll be less likely to crash after a holiday if you’re not stressed out before it begins.

• Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep diminishes your ability to deal with stress. Seven or eight hours of sleep every night will help you stay calm and patient throughout the day.

• Resist the urge to vent. Expressing your feelings isn’t the same as losing control. Lashing out at others can intensify your sense of frustration, especially if you can’t do anything about the situation. Focus on solving problems without exploding.

• Find your stress triggers. By observing what’s likely to make you nervous, impatient or angry, you’ll be

able to head off an ugly incident with your co-workers.

• Exercise. Regular exercise keeps you healthier overall. Start slowly, if you need to. Low-impact exercises such as yoga can help you relax your mind as well as your body.

• Recognize the symptoms. If you’re suffering from warning signs like lingering headaches, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating or stomach problems, you may be hiding from a very real threat to your health. Pay attention to what your body is telling you before stress takes its toll.

And if all else fails, just remember: Stressed spelled backwards is desserts.

Obituary Loretta Ann Nelson

Loretta Ann (Johnson) Nelson, age 80, a long time resident of Siren, WI, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2014 at Burnett Medical Center Continuing Care Center, where she had been a resident since October 2014.

Loretta was born October 23, 1934 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota, to Arthur and Hilma (Schultz) Johnson. She attended school and graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1952.

She was united in marriage to Gerald (Jerry) Nelson on October 8, 1952 in St. Cloud, MN. Upon Jerry’s return from military service they moved to Grand Rapids, MN where he trained and launched his career as a pilot. Loretta and Jerry started their family in Grand Rapids – where daughter, Chris was born in 1957 and son, Tim was born in 1960.

In 1964, they moved to Siren where Jerry was employed as a pilot inspecting power lines for Burnett County Flying Service, and son, Tom was born in 1965.

Loretta operated a day care in their home for several years. Many children benefited from her care and love, and continued to be part of her life into adulthood.

Loretta and Jerry eventually purchased and ran Burnett County Flying Service until retiring in 2006. They also served as fixedbase operators of the Burnett County Airport.

Loretta was a true partner in business – she was the bookkeeper, but she also guided planes to the active runway via radio communication and could even be found climbing the portable ladder to fuel planes!

Many local aviation enthusiasts frequented the airport simply to visit with her.

Community service was important to Loretta. She was a long-time member and dedicated volunteer of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she served as Treasurer and member of the church council for many years. She was frequently a voting delegate to synod assemblies and conference meetings. She was elected as a member of the School Board for Siren Public Schools for multiple terms. She also served on the Board of Directors at Luther Point Bible Camp.

Loretta is preceded in death by her sister, Carol Meier (1993), her daughter-inlaw, Kris (Tenley) Nelson (2012), and her husband, Gerald (2013).

She is survived by her children, Chris Nelson of Rochester, MN, Tim and Margo Melting Nelson of St. Paul, MN, and Tom Nelson and grandsons, Joshua and Lucas of Centerville, MN. She is also survived by her siblings: Jim Johnson, Ardenne Reimers, Margaret Atkinson, Herb Johnson, Don Johnson, Ben Johnson, Tony Johnson and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service for Loretta Johnson was at 11AM on Saturday January 10, 2015 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Siren with Rev. Paul Peterson officiating. A fellowship luncheon will followed. Interment will be at a later date at the Northern Wisconsin Veteran Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.

Extension, FSA add extra 2014 Farm Bill crops education seminars Online education available for producers, landowners Due to high demand, University of Minnesota Extension and the Farm Service Agency will offer seven educational seminars to help crops producers choose options necessitated by the 2014 Farm Bill programs.

“We’ve presented 73 education sessions to more than 12,000 Minnesota crop farmers. Decisions farmers make to

participate in the new farm bill programs are the most complex we’ve seen to date.

Through these programs and our online education, our goal is to equip Minnesota’s farming community as thoroughly as possible,” said Bob Craven, Extension agriculture economist and program leader for agricultural business management.

The farm bill repeals several previous programs, including direct payments for most crops. It covers the following crops grown in Minnesota: corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, canola, sunflowers, oats, sorghum, lentils, dry peas, garbanzo beans and flax.

-Sandi Dear Sandi, It sounds like you’ve taken a serious look at your situation, and you’re smart enough to know it’s not working and you want to do things differently. Well, this is a great time of the year for changes!

Years ago when I crashed and burned financially there were a few strong emotions that spurred me towards change. One of those was disgust. I realized that what I was doing was stupid, and that I was tired of living that way. I made a conscious, proactive decision that things were going to be different.

The second emotion was fear. I was scared to death that I’d be broke for the rest of my life. I don’t think you should ever live your life in fear, but a reasonable, healthy level of fear can be a terrific motivator.

The third thing was contentment.

Marketers try to sell us on the idea that we’ll be happier if we just go out and buy things. When we have this stuff crammed down our throats all day long, rapid-fire, it can affect our level and perception of contentment.

I want you to sit down every month, before the next month begins, and write it all down on paper, on purpose. Give every single dollar a name, and tell your money what to do. Once you’ve done this, the idea of “trying to live on a budget” stops being some vague idea floating around out there and becomes a real game plan for your money!

Swanville-Upsala Schools paring in sports

By BJ Lange I have seen first hand the impact the pairing has had on not only the students but the schools and communities as well. Yes, there were struggles at first. It has been well worth those original struggles. As rivals became friends, other relationships were built and a strong Patriot community was formed.

The football, baseball and track programs have all been very strong and stable since combining. As well as competitive. I personally would hate to see this relationship part ways over a difference of opinion by a few and some miscommunication between the two schools. The combining of all sports is what Swanville needs to do, and soon. Upsala may have good numbers today but they are also on the decline.

Dollars for Scholars Chili Feed

The 2nd Annual Upsala Dollars for Scholars Chili & Hot Dog Feed is scheduled for Friday, January 23rd 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Upsala Area Schools Cafeteria.

There will be a selection of different home made chillies to choose from including Colleen’s Classic Chili. We plan to serve Paul and Kathy’s award winning wieners. There will be lots of topping options for both the chili and hot dogs.

Each meal includes a selection of chili, a hot dog, toppings, bar and a choice of coffee or milk. Chips will be offered as an alternative choice for chili.

If the decision is made to part ways, where does that leave those currently combined sports? Are we willing to give this all up over a few extra miles to drive to a couple games? In near record time, the Minnesota House passed a tax conformity bill that should be signed by Gov. Dayton sometime this week.

It was done in the second week of session and should enable state changes in the tax code to be implemented before most Minnesotans start the process of preparing their tax returns for 2014. The changes align our state rules with those at the federal level, which were passed

by Congress this past December.

To me, the most amazing aspect of the bill isn’t so much the magnitude of the tax changes, which amount to about $19 million in larger deductions, but the speed and bipartisanship with which they were done. Throw in the fact the bill also contained clarifying language for the Rochester Destination Center program, and it demonstrates that this legislative session is off to a good start.

The tax bill’s provisions affect many Minnesotans, including teachers, those attending college (or otherwise paying for college tuition), and those who carry mortgage insurance. There are also items pertaining to the donation

of conservation easements, transfers to charities from IRA’s, and the discharge of indebtedness on a principal residence.

Also included on an ongoing basis is language pertaining to the treatment of new tax-preferred savings accounts for disabled individuals. You should contact your tax preparer or CPA to get more details on these conformity changes. By the way, this legislation was strongly supported by the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants, a group of some 9,000 tax professionals throughout the state.

For farmers and other business owners, one thing this bill does NOT do is conform to federal depreciation as it relates to Section 179 and bonus depreciation. These two items were among those passed by Congress retroactively for calendar year 2014 and those federal amounts are effective for that tax year only.

Most committees conducted their first meetings last week. Member introductions and reviewing the basic committee rules and structure were usually the first items on the agenda. In the agriculture committees, we also heard presentations from high school and college students involved in FFA. We learned about the value of the program and how it helps students in many ways, from understanding various issues to improving their public speaking ability. These young people are great ambassadors for agriculture and can talk about their experiences very effectively.

“Is worship an act or an attitude?” asked the Old Testament professor.

As soon as the question was asked a fierce debate erupted among the students. There was more heat than light in the classroom as positions were defined and reinforced with passages of Scripture and definitions from a dictionary.

There was little disagreement about the fact that the end of worship was to show deep, profound and extravagant respect and devotion to God. But the when and where seemed to be a problem.

Many Christians place worship on their weekly schedule as something “to do” on Sunday morning at eleven o’clock. It is an “event” that has been part of their lives since they were children and one they will continue to “practice” as long as they live.

However, worship in Psalm 29 is something we are to do because of what God has done for us. We are to ascribe or bow down before Him in an “act” of humility and sincerity that reflects our “attitude” of submission.

When there is a parade that honors Queen Elizabeth II we see people bow as she passes before them. We hear them shout, “Long live the Queen” and they address her as “Your Majesty.”

By Connie Nelson, Hands of Hope Resource Center What am I talking about? Stalking January is the 11th Annual National Stalking Awareness Month observance.

In 2003, a California woman, whose sister was murdered by the man who had been stalking her, set out to make a difference in memory of her sister, by going before Congress, telling the horrific story of her family’s tragedy, and lobbying them to create laws, take action and raise awareness of stalking. Thus we now have a National Stalking Resource Center, stalking is now a crime in all fifty states, and January is Stalking Awareness Month. Who says that one person can’t make a difference?

So what is stalking? It is more than someone following another person, although if that is happening you are perhaps being stalked. Stalking is defined as any ongoing or repeated course of conduct that causes a reasonable person to feel fear. Between 6.6 and 7.5 million Americans will be a victim of stalking in their lifetime, with one in four of them being female, and one in thirteen being male. Persons as young as eleven have reported being stalked. With the onset of the “Technology Age”, stalking has become easier and even more frighten-

ing, as someone can track you with the GPS on your phone, and you may not know it’s happening, and then throw in all the social media sights, your computer, phone, and one can begin to feel pretty vulnerable. Like any crime victim, stalking victims can suffer physical violence and injury or death, and also may have insomnia, extreme anxiety and emotional insecurity that can in some cases result in depression. Stalking shatters ones sense of privacy, security and safety.

So if you think that you may be a victim of stalking, start documenting the things that are happening that make you feel stalked, like dates and times of what’s happening, save texts, emails, voicemails, and Facebook posts.

Change up your habits, take a different route to work or shopping. Most of all, trust your instincts, or your gut feelings, they’re seldom wrong. Upsala Elementary School will be holding its annual Kindergarten Roundup on Friday, March 6, 2015. Registration for the class of 2028 will begin at 8:15 a.m. for all children who are interested in attending kindergarten at Upsala Elementary School starting in the fall of 2015. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate and immunization record when they come on this day.

First-Timer Mentored Turkey Hunt Registration Open Those who want to hunt turkeys for the first time this spring have until Monday, Feb. 23, to apply to hunt under the guidance of experienced National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) volunteers.

Applications are available at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/turkey.

This year there are hunts designed for both youth and adult hunters. Youth ages 12 to 17 will hunt Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19. Adults will hunt Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17.

“First-time turkey hunters can go afield and hunt with mentors,” said Mike Kurre, mentoring program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Beginning this year, these mentored hunts are available for any adult first-time turkey hunter, while continuing to be open to youth.”

To be eligible, a youth hunter must be age 12 to 17 on or before Saturday, April 18; have a valid firearms safety certificate; and be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If there are more applications than available mentors, participants will be selected in a random lottery.

“This is the 13th consecutive year the DNR and the NWTF have cooper-

ated to provide opportunities for firsttime turkey hunters,” Kurre said. “More than 2,400 youth have been introduced to this unique hunting experience since spring youth turkey hunts began in 2002.

Through the program, family members of youth also become involved and help youth continue turkey hunting into the future.”

Participation in the hunts is only restricted by the number volunteers and private lands that are available. Anyone interested in providing quality turkey hunting land for the mentored youth hunts should contact a NWTF chapter online at www.nwtf-mn.org/Home/ ChapterListings.

Local Municipality Minutes Upsala City January 5, 2015 These are unapproved minutes.

Members Present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Robert Maciej, Brian Lange, Joan Olson, Dennis Westrich. City Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische.

The City Council meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson.

Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Brian Lange to accept the minutes from the December 1st, 2014 Regular City Council Meeting. Motion carried unanimously.

• Old school sewer line was plugged this past month, Frank is continuing to address and look into the issue.

• Options for conversion and replacement of the Fire Hall furnace were discussed. The option of putting the furnace upstairs of the Fire Hall was discussed using an 8-% efficient furnace at a cost of around $1600-$1800. Dual Fuel would still be used. Motion made

Fire Department Report, Lange: Brian Lange informed the Council that the FEMA grant has been submitted • Extrication equipment has

Kresha to Carry House File One Jobs Bill Assistant Majority Leader Representative Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, will chief author and carry House File 1, a bill that focuses on growing better-paying jobs for Minnesotans in all parts of the state. House Republicans introduced House Files 1 through 5 at a press conference that took place Thursday in Saint Paul. House Files 2 through 5 focused on improving education, protecting aging adults’ quality of life, refocusing transportation dollars on roads and bridges, and ensuring fair access and affordability in health care.

“House File One sends a strong signal that growing better-paying jobs is one of the top priorities of the New House Republican Majority,” Kresha said. “Our economy is signaling strength; now is the time to give certainty to job creators and entrepreneurs, and give them the tools to invest with confidence in Minnesota communities and help bring better-paying jobs to all parts of the state.”

House File One contains a number of provisions aimed at creating better-paying jobs, particularly in Greater Minnesota where companies have a more difficult time finding skilled workers. Some of the provisions include: • A state New Market Tax Credit for companies who make qualified venture investments in businesses in specifically determined parts of the state where jobs are needed in industries such as manufacturing, high tech, timber, mining.

• A refundable income tax credit for people who receive a degree in science, technology, engineering, math or longterm care field in parts of the state with high workforce vacancy rates. The credit

amounts to up to 50% of MnSCU tuition for the year in which the employee graduated, up to $2,500 for two-year program graduates and $5,000 for four-year program graduates.

• Makes permanent a statewide pilot grant program that helps cities construct workforce rental housing to help attract qualified workers in areas that lack sufficient or affordable rental options. Thief River Falls has been a commonly cited example where the rental housing market has hindered job growth.

• Expediting the DNR and MPCA permitting process goal from 90 days to 45 days for Tier 1 environmental permits.

House File One was officially introduced during Thursday’s legislative session. Kresha noted that the current version of the bill was a starting point, and that he would seek additional changes or input through the committee and legislative process.

“This bill is a starting point. I plan to seek input from my colleagues on both sides the aisle, other state officials, and members of the public on ways to improve upon this bill and make it even better. Growing jobs is a bipartisan goal, and I look forward to finding ways to do just that.”

Minnesota Traffic Deaths Continue Downward Trend in 2014 Projected Final Number Would be Second Lowest Since World War II Last year marked continued progress in improving traffic safety on Minnesota roads as preliminary data reveal traffic deaths falling to a near record low. According to the latest preliminary numbers from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety, 356 people lost their lives in 2014 crashes.

DPS projects a final number of 370 road fatalities after final statistics are evaluated. This would be the second

There was a significant decline in pedestrian deaths in 2014. After peaking at 71 deaths in 1986, pedestrian fatalities dropped to 17 according to preliminary numbers, the lowest number from 1984 -2014.

Behind the Numbers: Lives Forever Changed. While the declining numbers are encouraging, the end of 2014 was a difficult time for a number of Minnesota families as losses included: • A husband and wife from Marshall, married 42 years.

• An 88-year-old man from Arco.

• A 35-year-old woman from North Mankato.

“The pain and suffering of even one family is too much. We all have a part in reaching a goal of zero deaths on Minnesota roads,” said Donna Berger, Office of Traffic Safety director.

2014 Preliminary Results, as of January 13, 2015: • 17 pedestrians, down from 35 in 2013 • Five bicyclists, down from 6 in 2013 • 45 motorcyclists, down from 60 in 2013 The deadliest months in 2014 were August (43), July (40) and September (37). The months with the fewest fatalities were March (19), February (20) and January (28).

Toward Zero Deaths: The Toward Zero Deaths program has played a significant role in saving lives and reducing serious injuries on Minnesota roads.

Education, enforcement, engineering and emergency medical services have helped reduce fatalities by nearly 41 percent since 2003.

2003-2013 Minnesota traffic fatalities: 2013: 387; 2012: 395; 2011: 368; 2010: 411; 2009: 421; 2008: 455; 2007: 510; 2006: 494; 2005: 559; 2004: 567; 2003: 655 Driver distraction and speeding are

among the top contributors to crashes but alcohol is the top factor in traffic fatalities in Minnesota. Drunk driving is responsible for one out of every five traffic fatalities.

In 2013, 81 people died from drunk driving-related crashes. Drunk drivingrelated deaths dropped from 196 to 81 from 2003-2013, a nearly 59 percent decline.

Lack of seat belt use also plays a significant role in contributing to driver and passenger deaths. About half of the motorists killed in Minnesota are not buckled up.

About the Minnesota Department Public Safety: DPS comprises 11 divisions where 2,100 employees operate programs in the areas of law enforce-

ment, crime victim assistance, traffic safety, alcohol and gambling, emergency communications, fire safety, pipeline safety, driver licensing, vehicle registration and emergency management.

DPS activity is anchored by three core principles: education, enforcement and prevention.

About the Office of Traffic Safety: OTS designs, implements and coordinates federally funded traffic safety enforcement and education programs to improve driver behaviors and reduce the deaths and serious injuries that occur on Minnesota roads. OTS also administers state funds for the motorcycle safety program and for the child seats for needy families program.

OTS is an anchoring partner of the state’s Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) traffic safety initiative.

$5.00 entry fee per contestant. $2.00 Raffle - $3.00 Fishing.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.

All prizes are guaranteed.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Tickets must be purchased from Club Members or their authorized ticket vendors.

This is a non-profit contest. Profits will be used for charitable needs in Morrison County and Todd County.

All winners are responsible for their own taxes.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to a contestants disqualification and cancellation of participation in this contest.

Site of contest will be on Long Lake. Hours will be from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Live bait will be available on the ice.

Always be weary of ice conditions. We are not liable for any injury or loss of life or property.

Any alcoholic beverages won have to be claimed by persons of legal age.

Restroom facilities will be available on the lake.

Participants must act and behave in an orderly manner and be responsible for their actions. No debris is to be left in your fishing area after the contest!
