nothing inside ourselves that we have not already put there.”

A solid character foundation includes honesty, loyalty, respect and unselfishness.

Let’s take them one at a time.

Honesty. Telling the truth at all times builds character. Your word has to be your bond. Complete honesty in little things is not a little thing at all. Honesty, ethics, integrity, values, morals – all mean the same thing. In my estimation, you can interchange them, because they all convey the single attribute that determines whether a person or an organization can be trusted. If truth ever stands in your way, you are headed in the wrong direction.

Loyalty is royalty. The first quality I look for in employees or friends is loyalty.

I would rather have a terrific employee work for us for a few years and be true to our company values than someone who still shows up every day, punches the clock and hangs around just to collect a paycheck.

Respect. You must respect other people and their property. You don’t have to fear your competition, but respect their abilities.

Showing respect is not a sign of weakness – it’s a show of strength. As baseball great Jackie Robinson said, “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me ... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

Unselfishness. The reason I love team sports is that players learn the power of teamwork and how to be unselfish, regardless of their individual abilities.

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. His personal accomplishments on the court give him bragging rights beyond compare. Yet he wrote in his book, “I Can’t Accept Not Trying”: “There are plenty of teams in every sport that have great players and never win championships. Most of the time, those players aren’t willing to sacrifice

for the greater good of the team. The funny thing is, in the end, their unwillingness to sacrifice only makes individual goals more difficult to achieve.”

Character is revealed when pressure is applied. You’ve probably heard the saying that sports do not build character. They reveal it. How a person plays the game shows something of their character; how they lose shows all of it. The same is true for business.

Hall of Fame College Football Coach Lou Holtz describes character this way: “The answers to three questions will determine your success or failure: 1. Can people trust me to do my best?

2. Am I committed to the task at hand?

3. Do I care about other people and show it?

“If the answers to these questions are yes, there is no way you can fail,” Holtz said.

Helen Keller was born perfectly healthy but was left completely blind and deaf when she suffered an illness at 18 months.

For five years she was isolated from the world until a special teacher named Anne Sullivan helped her fight back against her challenges.

Helen Keller said: “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”

Mackay’s Moral: Character is what you are when no one is watching.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne

Movies When we look back to some of the memories from our past, most of us remember a time when a really special treat was to go to a theatre.

There was no TV, so being able to see and hear action on a movie screen was one of the newest and greatest thing we were able to experience. In our younger years it was hard to imagine that all of that action was just a picture.

The early movies frequently dealt with subjects that movie viewers preferred.

The common desired subjects consisted of cowboy movies, cops and robbers and love stories. War stories were not especially popular, since before the movie began, there were some special news films and reports that followed happenings on the European and Eastern WWII fronts.

Since these news reports from the War were shown with actual combat film and since we all knew individuals who were actually in the fighting, we felt that we were better informed and closer to the action.

The early cowboy movies usually involved a really bad guy who was wearing wrinkled clothes, hadn’t shaved lately, hung around with undesirables and wore a dirty or black hat. His speech showed a lack of education. The good guy usually wore a clean white hat, a well ironed white shirt, a rope tie, new gun holster, a clean shave, perfectly combed hair and usually being bullied by the bad guy. There always was a pretty lady, who was also either being bullied or being either physically or financially threatened.

The good guy needed to save and protect the lady from the bad guy, since he usually won this lovely creature’s love at the end of the movie. She also showed a perfect appearance. With a dress that was spread about 5 feet at the bottom. Her face and hair were always perfect, even though she just woke up or had just experienced a fall in the horse corral. Another important part of the early cowboy movies was the horse chase. At first I thought that the horses must be getting very tired, but as years went by, I noticed that during the horse chase, the horses ran past the same pile of rocks at least three times during the chase.

The cops and robbers movies usually were based in a big city. Again a gang of bad guys were planning or had successfully robbed a large amount

of valuables or bootleg liquor. The good guys were constantly attired in a neat suit and tie. They were dedicated to the enforcement of the law and protection of the public. The story was based on a chess game, with both sides making moves and the opponents either blocking the move or avoiding it. The good guys were the winners at the end of the movie. In many cases, the finish was to tell the viewers to obey the law or else the law will get you.

In many cases the love stories involved a full set of characters that were all clothed impressively. They often lived in a big city and probably were quite wealthy. There were two ladies who were both making plans to catch the goodlooking young guy, who had a beautiful sports car and lots of money. As the story progresses we find that one of the ladies has unsavory intentions and the good-looking guy shows his wisdom by choosing the good gal. She was probably better looking anyway.

Yesterday’s movies were similar in many ways, but today’s movies are very different. Today we see cyborgs, characters from space, super men and women and main characters that are sprayed with machine gun bullets and never get a scratch. We no longer see a shootout on main street involving only the bad guy and the good guy, we see massive fires and explosions and the termination of bunches of people. We now have people and vehicles that are able to perform impossible feats.

Todd County Grant Relief Program for Small Business and Non-Profits On Tuesday, January 19th, 2021, the Todd County Board of Commissioners approved the Todd County Grant Relief Program for Small Businesses and Non-Profits. The Minnesota Legislature and Governor previously passed legislation authorizing funding to Minnesota counties to distribute relief grants to local businesses and non-profits impacted by an executive order related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant program is for small businesses and non-profits directly or indirectly affected by EO 20-99 or other executive orders causing closures by the COVID-19 pandemic. The application form and program guidelines have been posted on the Todd County website under the Business Resources page, located at https://www. co.todd.mn.us/businessresources.

The information can also be found on the Todd County Economic Development page, located at http://www.toddcountydevelopment.org/ The Todd County Grant Relief Program Guidelines explain the required documentation, eligibility criteria, and where to send the applications. Grants will be awarded to eligible businesses and non-profits who meet the criteria of the application and provide all supporting documentation. Grant amounts are listed on the application and are subject to change based on need and availability of funds.

Linus Kalthoff

Linus M. Kalthoff, age 85 of Albany, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at his home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 22 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Aaron Nett officiating.

Linus Michael Kalthoff was born March 6, 1935 in St. Martin, MN to Joseph and Anna (Jacobs) Kalthoff. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1957 to 1963 and worked as a relief driver for the St. Martin Co-op Creamery. On June 7, 1960, he married Jenny Scherer at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph, MN. Linus was a dairy farmer all of his life. He was a member of Seven Dolors

enjoyed her work in restaurants, cooking and waitressing. Liz loved to fish, especially for bass and crappies. Sewing and quilting brought her pleasure. She loved trips to casinos and playing bingo. Getting together with family and friends to play cards was always a highlight. More than anything Liz loved to socialize and make people laugh. Liz enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sisters, Margaret (Ray) Demmon of Nevis, Ida Fuller of Brainerd, three sons, Richard (Bonnee) Nauber of Plymouth, Rodney (Kathleen) Nauber of Clarissa and Jerry Nauber; two stepdaughters, MerlLynda (Mike) Heiser of Parkers Prairie, Vaye (Perry) Casperson of Crookston, and three step-sons, Marty Whitford of Sturgis SD, Glenn (Brenda) of Farmington NM, Gregg (Monica) Whitford of Albuquerque NM and 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a future date at the Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie, MN with a private family interment at Black Hills National Cemetery Sturgis, South Dakota.

Elizabeth Whitford, 77, of Long Prairie passed away on January 14, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie with family by her side.

Liz was born on February 6, 1943 to Emil and Doris (Fox) Schilman in Park Rapids, which is also where she was raised. She married Warren Nauber on July 9, 1960 in Akeley. The couple had three children, Richard, Rodney and Jerry. In 1968 they moved to Clarissa where they farmed.

Liz married Merle Whitford on January 19, 1982 in Rapid City, SD and shortly thereafter moved to Hoffman, MN. In 2003 they moved to Garden City SD. Merle passed away in 2004. Liz then moved to Long Prairie where she has resided since.

Liz always found reward in helping others. This was reflected in her role as a nurses’ aide in several nursing homes, including the Clarissa Care Center. She also

Mary E. Eisenschenk, age 76 of Albany, passed away p e a c e f u l l y surrounded by her daughters on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at her home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 18 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Mary Eileen Messer was born April 6, 1944 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Anton and Bertha (Kenning) Messer. She grew up in West Union and on September 25, 1963, she married Allen Eisenschenk. They farmed north of Albany where they raised their children. After the kids left the house, Mary began working at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home doing various positions. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and going on casino trips with her daughters.

Mary was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Survivors include her children, Jane (James) Melby of Sartell, Janice (Tim) Tomsche of Albany, Cindy (Dean) Tomsche of Albany, and Kathy (Dennis) Gerads of Freeport; 12 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren; sisters, Joan Koopmeiners and Rita (Randy) Edberg; and brothers, Philip (Sharon) Messer and Michael (Debbie) Messer.

Gerald J. “Jerry” Panek, age 54 of Avon, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at his home in Avon, Minnesota.

Gerald James Panek was born September 17, 1966 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Alfred Sr. and Mary (Chock) Panek. He married the love of his life, Diane Bloch, on October 4, 1986 in Albany. He and Diane raised a family of four children on a hobby farm in Avon.

In his career, he was a Heavy Equipment Operator in the 49ers Union. Jerry was also a diehard fisherman. He enjoyed going on fishing trips with his sons, brothers, and friends. His favorite pastimes were playing poker, gardening and delivering baked goods.

He cared for his family beyond words and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Jerry was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Craig J. Garding

Craig J. Garding, age 46 of Freeport, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

Craig Joseph Garding was born March 30, 1974 in Paynesville, Minnesota to Stephen and Mary Kay (Holthaus) Garding. He was a simple guy that enjoyed tinkering on vehicles, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

Survivors include his parents, Steve and Mary Garding of Freeport; sister, Robin Garding; son Avery Garding; nieces, Cheyanne Duckson (fiancé, Cody Lineburg) and Jocelyn Garding; nephew, Elisha Duckson; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Thomas “Tom” T. Kliber

T h o m a s “Tom” T. Kliber, age 66 of Swanville passed away at his home Wednesday, January 13, 2021 after his battle with cancer.

A remembrance service will be held outside at a later date.

Tom was born August 5, 1954 to Clarence and Veronica (Nixie) Kliber of Sobieski. Tom was the 5th of 10 children. His large family and their huge garden kept Tom busy growing up. He was always drawn to nature; hunting and fishing to be his favorites.

In his free time, he was likely to be seen stopped at a local river casting a few lines, in a stand or field. He was also an avid gardener and took pride in his harvest. Tom spent many evenings fighting mosquitoes, and picking fruit and vegetables. As the years went by, he made sure to share the fruits of his labor with many family and friends. Sharing this with others meant the world to him. Tom’s natural creative and mechanical abilities, drew him to a career in auto body at a young age. He started the Sobieski Body Shop in 1988 and was known around town to be the best in the business. He did his best work while listening to classic rock and roll, which was always on!

He semi-retired in 2020 but couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a job here and there.

Tom met Nona Koester in 1976, in those 44 years together they settled in Swanville and welcomed a daughter and son. Taking drives, visiting garden centers, auctions, and stopping to see if the fish were biting were things they enjoyed doing together. He will be missed greatly (not by the deer or fish though).

Tom is survived by his partner, Nona Koester; daughter, Sara (Ryan); granddaughters, Harlyn and Riley of Stillwater; son, Ryan of Swanville, and shop cat Zeke; siblings, Gary (Jane) Kliber of Osakis, Mary Kliber of Sobieski, Darlene Streich of Andover, Kenny (Corey) Kliber of Randall, Gordy (Peggy) Kliber of Andover, Julie (Chico) Pekula of Sobieski, Floyd Kliber of Sobieski and sister-in-law, Diana Kliber of St. Cloud.

Sandra Jean Theisen

Sandra Jean Theisen, age 79 of Sauk Centre, was called to be with Jesus and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on We d n e s d a y, January 13, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St, Cloud, Minnesota after a courageous 8-year battle with cancer and COVID-19 complications.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, January 19 at St. Paul’s Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Sandra Jean Robertson was born September 6, 1941 on a horse farm near North English, Iowa to Lloyd and Mayme (Swartzendruber) Robertson. She graduated from Washington Iowa High School in 1960.

Sandy was united in marriage to Paul Kent Theisen on May 8, 1965 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Iowa. After many moves they planted their roots in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

She was a devout member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and was very active in many missions of the church. She had a great love of promoting her life to the Divine Mercy Devotion, Chapel Adoration and volunteering which she so loved to do.

She deeply loved her family and friends who she said held a very special place in her heart.

She was an inspiration to us all and such a loving and caring person who was very dedicated to her family and friends, but most importantly to Jesus Christ and our Blessed Mother Mary.

Survivors include her loving husband, Paul Kent Theisen of Sauk Centre; daughter, Nicoli (Warren) Peterson of Jeffers, and son, David Theisen of Plymouth; grandchildren, Cassandra (Jake) Weisz of Redfield, South Dakota, and Clay Peterson of Woodbury; great-grandchildren, Kasper and Rosalie Weisz.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Mayme Robertson; brothers, Robert Robertson and Ronald Robertson.

Kenneth G. “Kenny” Wallin, age 65 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota after a short battle with cancer.

Kenneth Gerald Wallin was born October 19, 1955 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Russell and Irene (Riermann) Wallin.

Kenny worked at Standard Iron in Sauk Centre for 45 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Kenny enjoyed fishing, hunting, trail riding, spending time with his family and friends, traveling with his wife, Patty, and playing with his dog, Pepper.

Feeders draw the birds in close

High calorie seeds and suet help birds stoke their inner furnace, making it easier to withstand the cold.

By Val Cunningham Winter is the most challenging season of the year for Minnesota’s birds.

Food is scarce so they need to spend nearly every waking minute searching for enough calories to beat the cold.

The difference between birds’ inner body temperature—around 105 degrees-and that of the outside air is much more pronounced in winter. Thus, their metabolisms must be stoked continuously by feeding throughout the day, as if they were shoveling coal into a furnace.

This unrelenting need to consume calories is the reason why many winter birds can be enticed to bird feeders. Out in nature, resources are spread around, so it’s a bit “unnatural” for food to appear in one place. But once birds become familiar with a feeding station, they’ll make it part of their routine.

Feeders almost never are the difference between life and death for our backyard birds but they do make their lives a bit easier, especially after a long night of fasting, or before heading in to their night roost.

And the reward for those of us who maintain bird feeders is watching the birds they draw in.

Chickadees dash in to grab a sunflower seed, then flit off to a branch to peck it open. Burbling goldfinches stack up at tube feeders filled with nyger and sunflower chips, while house finches seem to prefer safflower in a dome feeder. The minute I put out peanuts, the blue jays dart in to carry them away on trip after trip. They return so quickly I’m convinced they’re stashing most of them around the neighborhood to eat later.

Juncos hop around under the feeders for seed bits scattered by the other birds. They’re often joined by a flock of house sparrows who feed in a rush before scattering back to a large evergreen shrub where they noisily chatter.

The downy, hairy and red-bellied woodpeckers swoop in for shelled peanuts and suet bits. White-breasted nuthatches perch head down as they chip out chunks of peanut to eat or stash under garage shingles for later consumption.

Sometimes this dynamic changes quickly, with songbirds exploding into

flight and disappearing. Or the backyard reveals no birds other than a woodpecker or two frozen in place on the peanut feeders.

What’s going on? Almost invariably, a hawk has strafed the backyard, or is hiding in an evergreen.

Hawks are becoming a fairly regular feature around feeding stations, even in urban areas. Bird-eating hawks like Cooper’s hawks have learned that small birds gather around bird feeders, and this makes their hunts much easier.

A Cooper’s hawk sweeps through my backyard several times a week, often perching on a metal arbor, its head swiveling as it tries to locate the now-hidden birds.

The woodpeckers freeze in place if caught in the open by a hawk, since their fairly slow, swooping flight makes them vulnerable to highly maneuverable raptors. (Red-tailed hawks sometimes drop by, as well, but seem more interested in the squirrel population.)

Once the hawk leaves, birds emerge from hiding to feed on the ground or at feeders, seeming to put the episode behind them.

The birds return many times a day, but as the shadows lengthen, they take one last seed and one last drink at the birdbath, then disappear for the night.

All except the northern cardinals, whose ability to see at low light levels allows them to stay out later (and show up earlier in the morning). Some winter evenings I may count up to 18 male and female cardinals shuttling from feeder to ground to birdbath, before finally disappearing as darkness falls. (As spring approaches, this behavior will end, as rising hormone levels make the red birds more territorial.)

One of the many lovely things about birds is that they make living look easy, but their lives are anything but. Having well-stocked feeders along their daily foraging routes gives them just a bit of an edge in a life-threatening season.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update: Vaccinations Going To Priority Groups As Supply Allows CentraCare is looking forward to the opportunity to vaccinate more people in our community and we are encouraged by the number of people who are interested in receiving the vaccines. We have received many questions about our role in administering vaccinations to the public. At this time, CentraCare does not have the supply to vaccinate on a large scale.

In an effort to update our community, we want to make clear the difference between CentraCare’s vaccine procedures and what is being offered by the Minnesota Department of Health.

CentraCare Vaccination Plans Right now, CentraCare is focused on vaccinating health care workers in our communities and targeted priority groups who are most at risk. We are dependent on a limited vaccine supply and undetermined allotment numbers.

We are hopeful to receive more vaccine in the coming weeks and are prepared to vaccinate larger groups once supply is secured.

We are not currently holding vaccination clinics for the general public. Clinics will only be held for targeted priority groups.

There are no walk-in clinics for vaccination.

We will reach out directly to eligible patients when they can receive the vaccine.

Patients should not call to schedule an appointment. If you were notified you can receive a vaccine, follow scheduling directions provided in the communication.

CentraCare does not have a waiting list and there is no option to pay for early access to the vaccine.

At this time, CentraCare is not scheduling any vaccinations for people in the Phase 1B group, which includes childcare workers, teachers and other essential workers.

“We have the plans in place to continue vaccinating and to expand upon our vacci-

nations when we have more vaccine available,” said Dr. Jill Amsberry, pediatrician at CentraCare and part of the CentraCare COVID-19 Vaccine Planning Team. “This is a big undertaking, and we thank you for your patience during this time as we roll this vaccine out in a staged approach.”

Minnesota Department of Health Vaccination Plans The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) opened up vaccination appointments at its nine community vaccination clinics on Tuesday, including one in St. Cloud. MDH is scheduling appointments for people 65 and older – along with educators and childcare workers who worked through their employers to schedule an appointment.

The state is no longer taking appointments after filling nearly 6,000 appointments. Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been having issues with my 2008 GMC Acadia. The Service Engine Soon light comes on and also the Trac-Off and ABS lights come on and when they do the message center displays reduced power and I can’t drive because I have no throttle response. When I take this thing in to my shop it works for them because it only happens about once a week.

-Mike in Daytona, Florida Dear Mike, That’s a ton of stuff going on there but I suspect they might all be connected. Over the past year we have seen no less than 20 vehicles exhibit this set of symptoms and they all turned out to be the same, a failed throttle body. The throttle body is electric and is the part that regulates how much air enters the engine. There is no cable connecting the throttle pedal to the engine as in the past. This system as you can imagine must be calibrated exactly and have sensors to make sure that the vehicle does not have unintended acceleration or throttle loss. When the engine computer senses a failure in any of the internal circuits the system goes into reduced engine power mode. It will need to be diagnosed to know for sure and if replaced make sure you keep a receipt for the work in case GM decides to recall it for safety reasons which could possibly make you eligible for a monetary reimbursement on repairs.

Once the car warms up I can shut the light off and clear the message if I cycle the ignition key. It has been doing this for over a year and my wife is getting nervous about it so I want to get it fixed.

-Tom in Ventura, California Dear Tom, We have seen this message a few times and although engine codes and messages should be something simple to diagnose they don’t always get diagnosed as easily as you could hope for. The system needs to be diagnosed to know for sure what’s up but some of the things to check that can trip the codes are the lack of ability to read engine temperature due to a failed sensor or connection to it or an actual failure of the engine to reach proper operating temperature in a preset amount of time as determined by the engine computer software. Now the message reads Engine Hot, but that’s where it gets tricky because when the engine can’t reach proper temperature it’s often a failed thermostat and that makes the engine run cold, not hot. A strange situation for sure but it’s just one of the fun things we mechanics get to deal with everyday on our shops.
