Innovate or Stagnate -By Harvey Mackay

If you are a track and field fan, you probably know all about the “Fosbury Flop,” a story that tells a world of things about innovation, persistence and a burning desire to win.

Dick Fosbury was a good high jumper and he seemed to have reached the maximum height his body could clear. But he kept an open mind and began to experiment with every different way a body could be propelled over the bar.

The style he finally developed was different than anyone else had ever seen. The jump is done head first, with the flat of the back clearing the bar and then the knees are drawn up, jackknife fashion. When people first saw him do it, they went away shaking their heads.

But in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, Dick Fosbury set a new Olympic high-jump record and won a gold medal for the United States. It was a triumph born of fresh thinking and dogged experimentation. Today, many of the world’s best high jumpers base their jumping style on the “Fosbury Flop.”

“Business has only two functions,” wrote management guru Peter Drucker,

“marketing and innovation.”

Innovation is what drives our great country. Look at all the great innovative companies, such as Bill Gates’ Microsoft, Steve Jobs’ Apple and Howard Schulz’s Starbucks.

These innovative leaders found a new or better way of doing something.

Domino’s Pizza shocked the industry with the original idea of guaranteeing pizza delivery in 30 minutes or get $3 off.

Amway introduced multi-level marketing and turned a garage-based company with a quality product, unique packaging and distinctive labeling into a corporate giant.

LifeSavers mints were a losing proposition until they invented counter merchandising and were prominently placed next to cash registers in convenience stores and restaurants.

Jeans pioneer Levi Strauss recognized the need for looser fitting, yet stylish casual pants and scored a big hit with Dockers slacks.

Other great companies have done similar innovative things.

Look at Coke and all its combination of products in cans, plastic and glass bottles. Certainly no list of innovative companies would be complete without Google, Amazon or Facebook.

It’s no wonder my good friend Denis Waitley says, “Innovators anticipate or create a need and fill it.”

Innovations don’t always come from big companies though. I saw a study that listed 61 basic inventions, and only 16 were discovered by

big companies. For example, Leo Gerstenzang thought of Q-Tips when he saw his wife trying to clean their children’s ears with toothpicks and cotton balls. And Charles Strite invented the automatic toaster when a restaurant burnt his toast.

Legendary college basketball coach John Wooden changed the pace of the college basketball game by perfecting the fast break and won an unprecedented ten NCAA championships in a 12-year period, many of which I attended. His teams made a lot of mistakes in honing their craft, but mistakes are the essence of innovation.

Innovation can be simply doing something different. For example, the National Bank of Detroit once offered its checking account customers $10 for every error they discovered. This marketing ploy in two months brought in 15,000 new accounts and more than $65 million in deposits.

Estee Lauder is credited with being the first company to offer a free gift with a purchase, helping the company grow substantially. Many companies now do this. That strategy sells an enormous amount of cosmetics.

The Hewlett-Packard Company was famously founded in a onecar garage by William Hewlett and Dave Packard. It has become one of the world’s most innovative and Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

• Work quickly, keep the tools unlocked, work whenever.

• Know when to work alone and when to work together.

• Share – tools, ideas. Trust your colleagues.

• No politics. No bureaucracy.

(These are ridiculous in a garage.)

• The customer defines a job well done.

• Radical ideas are not bad ideas.

• Invent different ways of working.

• Make a contribution every day.

If it doesn’t contribute, it doesn’t leave

the garage.

• Believe that together we can do anything.

• Invent.

Feel free to borrow these rules until you develop a set of your own.

And then post them where you will see them every day. Be innovative!

Delmer Skroch

Obituaries Alma M. Bauer

Alma M. Bauer, age 95 years, 2 months and 8 days, of Albany, died peacefully on We d n e s d a y, December 25, 2013 surrounded by loved ones at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany,

Minnesota.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Alma will be held at 11:30 a.m.

Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Seven Dolors gathering area in Albany. A private family inurnment will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Seven Dolors gathering area in Albany.

Alma Margaret Rakotz was born October 17, 1918 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Anton and Margaret (Froelich) Rakotz. Alma left home at the age of 14 to work as a nanny and housekeeper for a local doctor to help her parents with finances.

She married Robert “Dick” Bauer on June 14, 1938 and pretty much single handedly raised their seven children (included in the seven were two sets of twins). She loved canning and gardening

which was a necessity in feeding their children. Alma was a wonderful cook!

Her special dumplings, homemade sausage, breads and pastries were excellent. Over the years, she taught her children and grandchildren these special techniques.

Alma was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church. She worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose for 35 years.

She worked amazingly hard all her life and will be missed very much by her loving family.

Survivors include her children Robert (Sylvia) Bauer of Las Vegas, NV, Harold Bauer of Stacy, Margaret Benedict of Savage, Kathleen (Larry) Groetsch of St. Joseph, Michael (Ruth) Bauer of Forest Lake and Mary Lou (Steven) Watry of Albany; 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Dick” Bauer on August 8, 1998, son and daughter-inlaw, Gerald (Shirley) Bauer; daughterin-law, Geraldine Bauer; son-in-law, Allen Schunk; parents; sisters, Loretta Bueckers, Marcella Gross, Ann Kapsner, Esther Habiger and Elizabeth “Betty” Gross; brothers, Louie, Pete, Joseph and Alois Rakotz.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Grey Eagle/Swanville Knights of Columbus to Sponsor Youth Free Throw Championship January 12

By Grand Knight Don Kerfeld All boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2014 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

The local competition will be held January 12th, 2014 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Swanville High School.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. All boys and girls 9-14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions.

All contestants on the local level

The Knight of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with over 1.8 million members in 14,500 local councils. Last year, Knights donated over 70 million volunteer hours and $162 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, communities, culture of life, families and youth.

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Delmer Skroch, age 76 of Holdingford will be at 11 AM Saturday January 4, 2014 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel.

Father John Paul Knopik will officiate and burial will take place at a later date. Delmer died at the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud on Sunday night. There will be a visitation from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday January 3, 2014 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel with a parish prayer service at 5:00 PM. There will be visitation again from 10:00 AM until the time of the service Saturday morning at the church. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Holdingford.

Delmer was born on June 18, 1937 to Edmund and Catherine (Kostreba) Skroch in St. Wendel, Minnesota. He attended a country school near St.

Wendel and then enlisted in the Army on March 27, 1958. He married Shirley Litchy on February 6, 1961 in Duelm, MN. After marriage Delmer and Shirley lived in the St. Joseph area where they took over the family diary farm. They later moved to their retirement farm near Upsala in 1997. Delmer was an outdoorsman; he enjoyed cutting wood, fishing, gardening, picking mushrooms and tending to the many animals that lived on the Skroch farm. He also enjoyed picking on the grand kids.

Delmer often indulged in a Mt. Dew and snickers bar. He was a member of St. Columbkille Church in St. Wendel.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Karen (Fritz) Jacobs, Holdingford; Randy (Mary), Swanville; Jamie (Jenny), St. Joseph and Julie (Duane) Struzyk, Holdingford; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; siblings, Clem Skroch, Rice; Emily Rudnicki, Avon; Melvin (Phyllis) Skroch, Rice and Sharon (Dennis) Yurczyk, St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edmund and Catherine, his infant daughter Lisa, and brothers Clarence and Claude Skroch.

The program begins at all 32 library locations on Thursday, Jan. 2 and ends Saturday, Feb. 22. The program is for adults and teens in sixth-grade or older. Its theme is “Make Tracks to Your Library.”

By completing and turning in a drawing slip after reading five books during the program, participants are included in prize drawings for mugs, calendars and grand prize gift cards.

There are no reading restrictions.

Adults are encouraged to enjoy fiction, non-fiction books or audio books of their choice, and voracious readers can

turn in multiple slips to increase their chance of winning.

Winter reading will also be encouraged by community read events featuring “To Kill A Mockingbird,” author talks, book clubs and other events at many GRRL locations. Check the Events page at www.griver.org, or pick up an Event Guide at your local library for more information.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Do you have any advice for teaching responsibility and generosity to adult children and grandkids when it comes to money?

-Justin Dear Justin, I think there are three key factors when it comes to teaching children of any age about these concepts—humility, gratitude and contentment. In my mind, humility is where gratitude comes from, and gratitude leads to contentment.

I’m generous to my adult children, but they have no sense of entitlement.

That’s due to their personal humility.

They don’t feel that I owe them anything, and they already know that anyone who cops an entitlement attitude gets cut off. You’re no longer qualified for my generosity when you lose your gratitude.

You’ve got to spend time talking to kids about these things. Otherwise, you run the risk of them counting on the income. Here’s an example.

We coach some family businesses at my company, and the best family businesses are the ones that teach non-employee family members who receive money from the business— dividends from the profits—never to live on those dividends. I’ve seen lots of cases where someone will start living on the business they don’t work in, and they immediately start feeling entitled to the money.

The same principle applies in your situation. If someone starts saying, “Well, since mom and dad are paying for our daycare, we can use that money we would have spent to buy a car.” That means they’ve started counting on mom and dad’s generosity to live, and that’s a form of entitlement mentality.

None of our kids receive any kind of financial help from us at all, unless

they’re already carrying their weight in their own lives. That’s not being cold.

It’s teaching responsibility and selfreliance. Now it would be different if one of them developed a serious medical issue or something like that.

But the whole idea that mommy and daddy have lots of money, and I can just get some from them? That doesn’t fly in our family.

You have to teach them character and giving in order for them to be valid recipients. Plus, it’s all about the kids’ attitude. But you’ve got to talk about it often and communicate the value system out loud. The gifting and generosity are contingent upon the humility that leads to gratitude that leads to contentment.

-Dave Dear Dave, My wife and I just bought a business with cash. We had been living with my brother and sister-in-law while we saved up, and things are starting to get a bit cramped. My brother has offered to co-sign on a house for us, but rent is pretty cheap in this area. What do you think we should do?

-Peter Dear Peter, You need to forget about a house and plan on renting for a while. You just bought a business, and at this point you don’t even know if it’s going to be successful. Plus, if you need a cosigner to buy a house, car or anything else, it means you’re not financially ready for that purchase.

Take some time, maybe two or three years, to get your business up and running. Go find a decent, inexpensive place to rent then pay off any debt you have while saving up as much money as possible. I want you to have a nice house one day, Peter. But you’re just not ready now. A house should be a blessing, not a burden.

A: The deer’s coat is designed to provide both a means for thermoregulation and camouflage. Summer coats appear reddish and are thin, allowing deer to better cope with heat stress. In the fall, deer begin a process of molting, which is triggered by hormonal changes that reflect the changing seasons. The reddish sum-

Pending suitable snow cover, the Department of Natural Resources plans to fly white-tailed deer population surveys from December through March in central and southeastern Minnesota.

“In the transition zone between agricultural and forested lands, which generally stretches from the northwest to southeast across Minnesota, we use aerial surveys to recalibrate the deer population model,” said Gino D’Angelo, DNR farmland deer project leader. “These survey flights help us make decisions on deer permit area designations that achieve our population goals.”

DNR pilots will fly low-level helicopter surveys in 18 deer permit areas during daylight hours at an altitude of approximately 200 feet.

Areas targeted to be flown include: Deer permit areas 214, 215, 218, 219, 221, 222, 223, 229, 239 and 241 in Becker, Benton, Clay, Hubbard, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pope, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Wadena, Wilkin and Wright counties.

Deer permit areas 341-343 and 345-349 in Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue,

Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona counties.

Aerial elk surveys using both an airplane and helicopter are also planned for the Kittson County1 and Grygla elk ranges in northwestern Minnesota. The flights are conducted annually during winter.

Holdingford Lions had a very Minnesota Through The Lens: productive year in 2013

LCCMR seeks proposals for $44 million Thought for in project funding from MN Environment the week: and Natural Resources Trust Fund The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) has issued its 2015 Request for Proposal (RFP) for funding from Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund beginning July 1, 2015. The Trust Fund represents the money that, since its inception in 1991, has been generated by the Minnesota State Lottery to provide a constitutionally dedicated funding source for protection of the state’s unique natural resources. Approximately $44 million is expected to be available for projects being sought in environment and natural resource areas that will provide multiple ecological and other public benefits. Proposals responding to the 2015 RFP are due Friday, March 28, 2014.

Proposals are being requested in the following seven areas: • Foundational Natural Resource Data and Information • Water Resources • Environmental Education • Aquatic and Terrestrial Invasive Species • Air Quality, Climate Change, and Renewable Energy • Methods to Protect, Restore, and Enhance Land, Water, and Habitat

Dinner Prayer

Lee, a seven-year-old boy, was asked to say thanks for the Christmas dinner.

Abundance: A Generous Helping Dr. John C. Maxwell What makes a person generous? The answer is abundance. However, we misunderstand abundance if we think of it in terms of “having a lot.” In fact, as Ken Stern of The Atlantic reported in March 2013: “One of the most surprising, and perhaps confounding, facts of charity in America is that the people who can least afford to give are the ones who donate the greatest percentage of their income.” On average, the wealthiest 20% of Americans (those with annual earnings in the top one-fifth of the population) gave 1.3% of their incomes to charity in 2011. In comparison, Americans whose incomes placed them in the bottom 20 percent of the country donated 3.2% of their income during the same year.

If abundance doesn’t come from wealth, then what’s its source? Abundance is first and foremost an attitude about life. It’s intimately connected to how we approach relationships.

Early on in their careers, leaders seek to distinguish themselves. As such, they have a competitive mindset. They want to defeat others in order to win personal victories.

As they mature, leaders begin to understand that they can achieve greater success by linking up with like-minded allies than by working alone. As such, they join with others to win team victories.

They find that success is sweeter when shared.

With even more age and experience, leaders start to figure out that they can enjoy greater influence by adding value to others in the organization than by making direct contributions themselves. At this point, they win coaching victories—helping others to excel. Significance comes from spending time and energy training others to succeed.

Finally, at the pinnacle of influence, people learn to multiply their influence by reproducing themselves in other leaders. They mentor and equip up-and-coming leaders who, in turn, will develop a subsequent generation of influencers.

Thus, at their peak, leaders win great victories by empowering a network of leaders to make a transformative impact on the next generation.

Here, greatness comes from selfless service; the leader pours his or her life into others so that they can shape the future of society.

To recap, as leaders grow they pass through a series of phases in which they discover evergreater abundance.

Stage 1: Striving for personal success.

These leaders have the rewards all to themselves.

Stage 2: Sharing success with a team.

These leaders split rewards with their teammates.

Stage 3: Spending resources to coach others to victory.

These leaders watch from the sidelines as others win rewards.

Stage 4: Serving other leaders so that they can guide the next generation to success.

These leaders oftentimes never see the rewards of their labor during their lifetime.

Moving from stage #1 to stage #4, a leader: • Gives more to other people • Receives fewer rewards firsthand • Gains influence The bottom line: Abundance is not having more to give; it’s giving more of what you have.

Leaders experience abundance by continually exchanging material rewards (money, power, fame) for relational influence. To paraphrase a Hebrew proverb: “Whoever hoards life’s benefits will impoverish himself, and whoever gives them away will live abundantly.”

Library enriches catalog entries with NoveList Data The online catalog at Great River Regional Library just got better.

Every day, more than 2,600 individuals search the catalog from home or other locations outside the library.

Catalog entries describe each of the books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and magazines in the library system’s collection, and tell the reader which location an item is at, whether it’s on the shelf or checked out, and when it is due to be returned. More than 950,000 items are described and accounted for.

All that essential information is now enhanced by a service called NoveList Select. It makes book searches fun by providing recommendations readers will see as they browse

online. For example, readers who look for “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins will not only see that the library owns multiple copies, but also that it is the second book in a series: the Hunger Games trilogy. They will also see covers of other series and other books recommended for readers of “Catching Fire.” Additional enhancements include listings for recommended authors, reader ratings and reviews, a link to the NoveList website, and extras from NoveList in the form of award winner listings and booktalk links.

People don’t know what they have. It’s better than money. -By Jeffrey Gitomer I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, “Count your blessings.”

I wonder how you interpret that. I wonder how you count them. I wonder how you take advantage of them. My biggest wonder is how grateful are you for your blessings.

HERE’S AN IDEA: Re-look at your blessings from a different perspective. Are they blessings or are they assets? Are they blessings or are they attributes? Are they blessings or are they gifts that you can share with others?

GOOD NEWS: There are no right answers to those questions.

BETTER NEWS: You have to determine the answers for yourself.

BEST NEWS: Once you determine what those blessings, or assets, or attributes, or gifts are you can begin to build them, add to them, enjoy them, and turn them into a happier, better you.

HERE’S HOW TO DO IT: Sit down at your laptop and write your eulogy. Write down what you would want your children or your significant other to say about your life. How you lived it, how you achieved in it, and what your best qualities were. What kind of a person were you? What kind of a father or mother were you? What kind of a son or daughter were you? What kind of a friend were you?

Those are the questions that will reveal all of the assets, all of the attributes, and all of the gifts that you have.

In my opinion, the one blessing or attribute that will define you better than any of the others is what you gave. I don’t mean how much money you gave away. Rather, I mean what you gave of yourself. Did you volunteer? Did you participate in a charity? Did you help your kids with their homework? Did you help an elderly person across the street? Were you a giver or a taker?

Giving defines your person.

Me? I give smiles. And I give them on purpose, every day.

I have a daily goal. Make ten people smile every day. That may not sound like much, but it’s amazing what

happens when you can make someone you hardly know smile at you based on your interaction with them. It means that you have been kind, or humorous, or thought provoking, or just a good guy or gal. Sometimes it involves a bigger tip than you might normally give.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of holding a door. Whatever it is, when you make someone smile it changes their whole physiology. They walk away feeling better than they did because they encountered you.

My daily goal also includes one other element: performing a random act of kindness.

Random acts of kindness are easily defined as proactive politeness, proactive helping, or proactive giving. No one asked for anything. You just decided to get up and do it.

I wonder if you ever think about random acts of kindness. I wonder if you regularly perform random acts of kindness. I wonder if you understand who feels best after the random act of kindness has been performed.

If you perform them like I do, then you know who feels best. You do.

Oh, the recipient feels great because you helped them or honored them. But you feel greater. Random acts of kindness have a double win. And the feeling lasts a long time.

I challenge you to make ten people smile and perform one random act of kindness a day. I challenge you to do it for the right reasons: for yourself.

When you make people smile, you smile. The power of that transfers immediately to all your other thoughts and you become happier. In fact, you look for ways to make other people smile because of the feeling that gives you.

And that’s a self-imposed blessing you can take to the grave.
