Take care of your customers or someone else will

By Harvey Mackay No business can stay in business without customers. How customers are treated and sadly, mistreated, determines how long the doors stay open. Poor quality service has probably doomed as many businesses as poor quality products.

Enter the “guru of customer service,” John Tschohl. He earned that moniker from USA Today, Time andEntrepreneur magazines. After 31 years focused solely on customer service, he is president of Service Quality Institute, which has representatives in 40 countries. He’s authored hundreds of articles and six best-selling books. And he is willing to share his wisdom with my readers. I don’t often devote so much of my column to one resource, but John is the best of the best.

I asked John how a company goes about creating a service culture. He broke it down into six steps: • Understand you’re in the service business. Most companies think they’re in manufacturing and retail. It’s a paradigm switch. Southwest Airlines is successful because they understand they’re a customer service company. They just happen to be an airline.

• Look at all the policies, procedures and systems that you’ve got in place that make life miserable for customers. You

could have the nicest people in the world, but you could have stupid hours, stupid rules, stupid procedures, that irritate customers. And they won’t come back.

• Have empowerment.

Every single employee has to be able to make fast and powerful decisions on the spot, and they better be in favor of the customer.

• Be more careful about who you hire. The service leaders hire one out of 50 applicants, sometimes one out of 100, but they’re very, very, very careful. You’ve got to look for the cream, the A players, instead of bringing on B and C players.

• Educate and train the whole staff on the art of customer service with something new and fresh virtually every four to six months.

There is no magic speaker, no magic training program. No matter if you have a hundred or a thousand or ten thousand employees, you better have something new and fresh so it’s constantly in front of them, so when they go to work, they say, “Fantastic -- I’m taking care of customers.”

• Then measure the results financially, so you know the impact it’s making on revenue, on profit and on market share. You have to track the numbers so you understand that it’s worth the time and effort.

John’s methods shouldn’t shock anyone -- and it’s likely that most successful businesses are doing some of

those things. But I think it’s the commitment to following through on all six that establishes the service culture. As I tell our staff at MackayMitchell Envelope Company, “We aren’t selling envelopes.

We’re selling people.”

But that’s not the end of John’s advice. I asked him to describe the five critical elements necessary for breakaway service. He didn’t hesitate.

First, he said you have to have speed.

“How do you shrink the time by 90 percent? If it normally takes 10 days to do something for a customer, how do you do it in one day? That’s speed. Speed is not going from ten hours to nine hours.

The following students were named to the fall semester dean’s list at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn. The dean’s list includes full-time students with a grade point average (GPA) during the semester of 3.65 (out of 4.0) or higher.

Emily Schulzetenberg, the daughter of Carl & Kathryn Schulzetenberg of Freeport. Schulzetenberg is pursuing a degree in Public Relations.

Marie Abeler, the daughter of William & Lisa Abeler of Upsala. Abeler is pursuing a degree in Biology.

Second, he reiterated the importance of empowerment. “They’ve got to do whatever they’ve got to do, on the spot, so the customer walks away off the Internet, out of the store, on the phone -- however they were interfacing -- and they think they have touched heaven.”

The most important person in every single company is the frontline employee.

Third, quality in whatever service or product you’re selling is essential.

Fourth is service. “And if you took the two words, quality and service, they’re highly intangible.” So if you asked 100 customers to define “quality service,” there would be 100 different

answers.

Finally, John stresses the importance of using the customer’s name, remembering the customer, and making them feel special. He described his experiences with an Apple retail store, which combines technology, speed, quality and service. They dominate the competition because they understand how the combination works.

After our conversation, I re-examined our company’s procedures. And if you care about service quality, you’ll do the same. Start 2012 with a new commitment to service!

Obituaries Dolores E. “Dolly” Dierkhising D o l o r e s E. “Dolly” Dierkhising, age 85, of New Munich, died peacefully on We d n e s d a y, January 11, 2012 at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Monday, January 16 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Dolores Eleanor Zierden was born August 10, 1926 in New Munich, Minnesota to Mathias and Mary (Wehseler) Zierden. On April 22, 1947 she married Herbert Dierkhising in New Munich. The couple lived in rural New Munich all their lives. Dolores had multiple jobs including raising her eleven children. She was employed as a cook, a labor worker at the turkey store, and was a wonderful homemaker. She loved knitting, gardening, watching Wheel of Fortune, and doing anything outdoors, especially at the cabin. Above all, she was most caring and loving to everyone.

Dolores was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and the St. Anne’s Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children, Daniel (Pam Petersen) Dierkhising of Avon, Carol (John) Suek of Long Prairie, Diane (Ken) Herbst of Walker,

Marvin (Pam) Dierkhising of Blaine, Alvin (Jan) Dierkhising of Long Prairie, James (Geralyn) Dierkhising of Avon, Melinda (Dan) Moening of Melrose, Julie (Bob) Young of Bowlus, Neil (Linda) Dierkhising of St. Cloud, Lisa (Steve) Danzl of Melrose, and Kim (Jason) Schroeder of Melrose; 31 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret (Al) Borgerding of Freeport and Sister Geraldine Zierden, O.S.B. of St. Joseph.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Dierkhising on December 4, 2000; infant twins, Allan and Alice Dierkhising; grandson, Jeffrey Dierkhising; sisters and brothers, Theresa, Hubert, Jerome, Art, Lucille, Edmond, Rosemary, and Larry.

Serving as casket bearers were Darrick Dierkhising, Greg Suek, John Dierkhising, Craig Dierkhising, Ryan Dierkhising, Brett Moening, Shane Dierkhising, Jayden Danzl, and Noah Schroeder. Cross bearer was Dawn Herbst and scripture bearer was Hope Danzl. Honorary bearers were Dolores’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mass servers were Valerie Parker and Zachary Zierden.

Gift bearers were Margaret Borgerding and Sister Geraldine Zierden, O.S.B. Readers were Tanya Finken and Sarah Suek.

Petitions were read by Lea Dierkhising, Jenna Dierkhising, Katie Fields, Chantel Dierkhising and Kristen Smith. Eulogies were read by Eli Dierkhising and Jim Dierkhising.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Marie E l i z a b e t h (Schulzetenberg) Laing, age 87, of Freeport, MN and most recently of Country Villa in Sartell was held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Father Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiated with Father Roger Botz, O.S.B. concelebrating.

Burial took place in the parish cemetery.

Marie died peacefully surrounded by her family at the St. Cloud Hospital on January 11.

Marie Elizabeth Schulzetenberg was born March 13, 1924 in New Munich to Henry Gerard and Pauline Mary (Leukam) Schulzetenberg. She attended school in New Munich. On September 19, 1949 she was united in marriage to Helerian “Larry” Laing at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. They were married for 62 years.

She co-owned the Corner Store, Inc. in Freeport, a grocery, hardware and general store for nearly 40 years. She lived in Freeport most of her life until moving to Country Villa Assisted Living in Sartell in 2005 to be near her daughter.

Marie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her role as homemaker. She was well known for her cooking and baking skills and enjoyed cleaning and decorating her home. She loved to quilt, sew clothing for her family, dance and listen to music and spoke fluent German, which was her heritage. She also loved to play cards, cribbage, gardening and canning, flower gardens, and cheering for the Twins! She was an impeccable hostess for family and friends. Marie and Larry always were filled with generosity and graciousness. Her German heritage and upbringing taught her to be very kind and giving. She was a perfectionist in every detail of homemaking, along with a strong work ethic. She also was a woman of endearing faith in God, attended daily mass most of her life, and gave her all to the Catholic church and God, as He was the stronghold in her life and the center of her home. She volunteered her time to the church by cleaning church, as a member of the church choir, baking for funerals,

and sending food to families who had lost a loved one. Many people have enjoyed her wonderful cooking and baking! She was always there for her children and grandchildren and followed their sporting events, dance shows, figure skating shows and any other event the grandchildren participated in, a devoted grandmother and mother. Family and friendships were very important to Marie!

Marie was a member of the Christian Mothers and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport where she quilted for parish church festivals for many years, the Goldenaires Senior Citizens and the Catholic Aid Association. She attended mass at the Country Manor Chapel in recent years following her move to Sartell 6 years ago.

Marie is survived by her children, Lois (Jamie Rask) Tamm of Sartell and Jim (Becky) Laing of Burnsville; five grandchildren, Brandon Tamm of Plymouth, Brittany Tamm of Mesa, Arizona, Kieran Tamm of Sartell and Austin and Brooke Laing of Burnsville; sister-in-law, Sylvia Schulzetenberg of New Munich; brother and sister-in-law, Norb and Muriel Laing of Bloomington; brother-in-law, Harold Laing of Osseo; and sister-in-law, Beverly Laing of Florida.

Marie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Henry and Pauline (Leukam) Schulzetenberg; her husband, Larry Laing who passed away March 9, 2011; brothers, Edmund, Martin, Othmar, Henry and Reverend Raymond Schulzetenberg; sisters, Sr. Ermenilda, O.S.B., Rose Meyer and Irene Schulzetenberg; brother-in-law, David Laing, Henry “Hank” Dwyer; and sistersin-law, Betty Laing and Marcella “Sally” Dwyer.

Serving as casket bearers were Brandon Tamm, David Schulzetenberg, Gary Schulzetenberg, Dan Schulzetenberg, Carl Schulzetenberg, and Brian Schulzetenberg. Cross bearer was Brooke Laing, scripture bearer was Brittany Tamm, and pall bearer was Austin Laing. Gift bearers were Pat Meyer and Kieran Tamm. Eucharistic Ministers were Mary Ann Laing and Mary Goebel. Readers were Karen Molitor and Ruth Hartman. Petitions were read by Deb Spanier and the eulogy

by Becky Laing. Honorary bearers were the Goldenaires Senior Citizens and the Christian Mothers.

Robert F. Martin

F u n e r a l services were held Friday, January 13, 2012 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church for Robert F. Martin, 88, who died January 11, 2012 at his home in Avon. Pastor Paul Dare officiated. Interment was in MN State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.

Robert was born June 2, 1923 to Frederick and Lydia (Stockamp) Martin in Finlayson, MN. Robert proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was united in marriage to Rita Pinsch on November 4, 1945 in Bremerton, WA. Robert and Rita owned Martin’s Ezy Shop for 17 years until his retirement in 1980. He was a member

of Holy Cross Lutheran Church as well as a member of the American Legion in Holdingford. Robert loved fishing, gardening, cribbage and especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

He was also proud to be a blood donor for the American Red Cross.

Robert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rita; children, Gerald (Calleen) of Champlin, Jeanette of Avon, David (Nancy) of Mt. Horeb, WI, Leann (Dale) Sachs of Coon Rapids; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; siblings, Arlan of Sandstone, Verna Parvey of Finlayson, Marjorie (Virgil) Zieg of Scribner, NE; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Clarence, Harold and Ruth Ann.

Vernon G. Mattson

V e r n o n Gunnar Mattson, 85 , formerly of Upsala, passed away Jan. 4, 2012.

He was born Dec. 22, 1926, and grew up on a farm just south of Upsala.

A graduate of Upsala High School, he joined the Army in 1946 and was posted to Korea. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked on the family farm until he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for his brother, Walter Mattson.

He later returned to Minnesota where he met and married Avis M. Nelson in 1950.

They farmed south of Upsala for four years before they relocated to Fremont, Calif., where Vernon again worked for his brother and later started his own business,

J&M Concrete Contractors. He continued his business until his retirement in 1992 when he and Avis moved full- time to the Lake Tahoe area. Health issues dictated their relocation to Rocklin, Calif., in 2001.

He is survived by daughters Barbara White and husband Monte of Loomis, Calif. and Nancy Stewart of Truckee, Calif.; son Ron and wife Dana of Folsom, Calif.; and granchildren, Stephanie, Christine and Tim White, Jennifer Hagan, Christopher Meredith, Katrina Stewart and Gunnar Mattson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Avis who passed away in 2005; his brother and three sisters, Anna Smedman, Gladys Tait and Agnes Zellmer.

A private family memorial will be held in his honor and later this year, interment will be in the East Swanville Cemetery.

Upsala Jr. High Student of the Month Kiley Smieja, daughter of Ken and Lynette Smieja, has been selected as the Junior High December Student of the Month.

Kiley, an eighth grader, has been highly involved in athletic activities. She has been a member of the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams, including Upsala’s summer softball league.

Science teacher and volleyball coach, Miss Anderson, stated, “I have been lucky to have Kiley both in volleyball and my science class. She is a hard worker and a good role model for her classmates. She is very personable

and always has good things to say about others. She is a very responsible young lady.”

Kiley shows leadership in her roles as class secretary and student council member. Academically, Kiley has continuously achieved the honor roll and participated in the Spelling Bee program. She is in Band and cites it as her favorite class because it’s fun. She regards math as her most valuable class, stating, “Because everyone will most likely deal with numbers every day.”

Her future plans are to graduate from high school and attend college.

Kiley’s off-campus life includes fourwheeling, biking, hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming, listening to music, and hanging out with friends and family. Her advice to classmates is, “Try to do your best at everything you do and stay true to yourself.

The Little Falls Morrison County Food Shelf had their annual Make-A-Joyful Noise fund-raiser in the weeks just prior to Christmas. Several church and civic groups volunteered time and talent to make music and collect donations.

Israil Pundsack is Upsala Area High School’s December Student of the Month. He is the son of Delroy and Susan Pundsack.

Israil has performed in drama for many years, most recently as the difficult lead in “Flowers For Algernon.” He is a quiet but effective leader, serving on the mission board and the youth leadership team at his church.

He will be serving in Jamaica this January on a mission trip. In his spare time he enjoys wakeboarding, snowboarding and camping.

Israil is a well-rounded student, fully capable in many areas. His favorite classes are in the Agriculture and Industrial area, because he says “they prepare me for employment.” He has proven his craftsmanship in some astounding wood projects at Upsala Area School, including a table constructed of 537 individual pieces of three species of wood.

His future plans are to take construction management at Moorhead or NDSU. No doubt, Israil will do well in life and serving his community in the future. Congratulations, Israil!

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township January 9, 2012 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, John Young & Mary Ann Primus. Bev Eggerth was absent.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. John made the motion to accept the agenda. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the December 5, 2011 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to approve the minutes as presented.

Zoning Report: As Bev was absent, Mary Ann reported that the ordinance updates have been recorded and gave board members copies of the letter. Bev will now be working to get the ordinance on the county website.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for De-

cember. Claims list included 11 claims for a total of $2,123.27. The upcoming wetland conference and a letter from Mary Franson were discussed. The Board reviewed items for reorganization with an increase made to monthly meeting stipend from $50 to $75 per mtg. and an increase to the hourly rate from $12 to $15. All supervisors duties remained the same with Ron Frericks as Chairman and John Young as Vice-Chairman, Ray Bense will be the Fire Board representative and Weed Inspector. Ron - Building and Zoning and John will be Road Supervisor.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of November 30, 2011: $198,356.86; Checks cleared 11: $36,733.00; Deposits including interest: $13,433.03; Balance as of December 31, 2011: $175,056.89; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $175,056.89; CD Balance: $61,698.31. Ray made the motion to accept the Treas.Report. John made the second. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: John

presented the road report. The dry fall lead to some areas of washboard roads that needed some work. John also had some calls for sanding after the snow. The brush in the road right of way has been taken care of and the rocks will be removed this spring. The contract with Elmdale Township is up for renewal, and after some discussion it was decided to ask for an increase from $300 to $400 per year for the next ten years.

Additional agenda items: The annual audit meeting was discussed and it was decided to set it for 7:00 o’clock on February 13. The Fire Board surplus came up and it was decided the clerk would send a letter asking for clarification.

Public Comment: Rodney Lanners was present to say that the Tubing signs had been removed from the traffic signs and are now 10ft out of the road right of way as they should be.

Adjournment: Motion by John to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Tickets available for Father Daughter Ball

The new session of the Minnesota Legislature convenes next week, with the gavel set to come down at 12 noon on Tuesday, the 24th of January. Barring any major surprises, this will be a shorter session than last year’s, when the budget wasn’t settled in time and the state was shut down for the better part of three weeks in July. This session is scheduled to run for ten weeks, with a couple of breaks around precinct caucus time and again at Easter, and then we will adjourn on April 30th.

I look for this session to be less contentious than last year, mainly because we don’t have a huge budget deficit clouding things up, and the settlement reached last July covered the next two years. Surprisingly, the November forecast contained good news in that we have rebounded from the deficit situation and now have a relatively modest surplus in the state’s treasury. In addition, the latest revenue figures for the last two months of 2011 were also positive in that individual income and corporate tax collections exceeded the forecast.

The one issue that has garnered more attention recently is the stadium situation for the Minnesota Vikings. Two things seem certain to me as they relate to the team and possible construction of a new facility. One is that people have spoken and told us that, if a stadium is built and public funding is used to cover part of its cost, don’t take that money from sources currently going into the general fund. And two, in my opinion, if we don’t build a new stadium, the Vikings will eventually leave Minnesota.

I am part of a bi-partisan group of House and Senate members who have been meeting over the past several months in an effort to come up with a plan that works. The location needs to be determined, along with the funding sources to pay for the stadium. Arden

Hills is probably the best over-all site because of the size of the area, but it’s also probably the most expensive. The Metrodome site has several positives going for it as well, including the infrastructure already in place and a local funding source from the city. To me, parking is an issue downtown, as well as the Vikings having to find another location to play their games during the Metrodome’s probable three-year renovation period. The University of Minnesota is about the only option available, but it’s smaller than the Dome and currently the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited at TCF Stadium.

It’s my hope that we come up with a plan that can receive enough votes to pass. The Legislature needs to address the issue, get it settled one way or the other, and then move on to the other, more pertinent issues of the state.

I recently attended an agricultural conference and heard a presentation from Ag. Secretary Tom Vilsack. He talked about the importance of agricultural exports to our nation’s economy, but when asked he couldn’t say for sure if a new farm bill would be passed by Congress this year. It would seem to be a difficult task, one made even harder because this is an election year. There could simply be an extension for another year, but we were told 37 different programs would run out of funding if that occurred. Also, I visited with a state senator from Oklahoma who talked about the federal government paying ranchers in his county $500 per head for “taking in” horses that have been rounded up in other parts of the country. At last count, there were around 18,000 horses being cared for this way in his area.

Grasshopper Plague of 1873 and the 1886 cyclone. In addition photographs and items from the Stearns History Museum’s collection highlight snowstorms, floods and lightning strikes.

The highlight of our local collection is photographs from the infamous cyclone that wiped out Sauk Rapids making St. Cloud the center of commerce in Central Minnesota.

This exhibit is on temporary loan from the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul and will be traveling to venues throughout Minnesota.

The Minnesota Historical Society Traveling Exhibits Program has been made possible by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on November 4, 2008.

Photographs of Stearns County disasters are available upon request.
