Creativity can set you up for success -By Harvey Mackay I have a daughter, Mimi, who lives in Arizona. She has twin boys and twin girls. For many years she sent out a nice holiday card. More than 90 percent of her friends thanked her for this holiday card. How did she do this? She sent it out in March. Why get involved with a gazillion other cards during the holidays?

January is International Creativity Month. Being creative in the first month of the New Year can set you up for a year of success.

Creativity is a fascinating and essential aspect of human potential. It is not just about artistic expression. It is about problemsolving, innovation and looking at the world through a fresh lens.

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use the more you have,” poet Maya Angelou shared. Because I think there’s tremendous value in learning from those who have demonstrated exceptional creativity, I’ve shared their words of wisdom to illustrate these examples.

Some of the strategies to help people tap into creative potential include embracing curiosity, creating the right environment, using creative thinking techniques, taking risks, collaboration, looking after your wellbeing and practice, practice, practice. Let’s take these one at a time.

By embracing curiosity, I am referring to asking questions and exploring new areas. Be inquisitive about everything. The more you question, the more you learn, and the more your mind opens to new ideas. Step outside

your comfort zone and learn about topics unrelated to your usual interests. This crosspollination of ideas can spark creativity.

Adam Grant, American popular science author and professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, said: “Creativity begins to die when we fail to celebrate curiosity. We reward students for getting the right answer, but not for asking good questions. We promote managers for delivering results, but not for developing new ideas.”

Creating the right environment means surrounding yourself with inspiration and minimizing distractions. Whether it’s art, music, nature or a collection of interesting objects, the right environment can stimulate your senses and inspire new ideas. Find a quiet space where you can focus without interruptions. Sometimes the best ideas come when your mind is at rest.

Creative thinking techniques include brainstorming and mind mapping. Gather a group and throw out all ideas – no matter how outlandish – without criticism. As inventor Thomas Edison said, “To have a great idea, have a lot of them.”

Also, visually map out your thoughts to see connections and expand on them. Years ago, I wrote a column on creativity using the acronym SCAMPER, which stands for substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to another use, eliminate and reverse. Use these prompts to think differently about a problem or product.

Taking risks is about embracing failure and challenging the status quo. Not every idea will be a winner, but each failure is a step towards success. Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it is the best way. Dare to be different.

Cartoonist Scott Adams said, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.”

By collaborating, I mean sharing ideas.

Two heads are better than one. Three heads

are better than two. Collaborate with others to expand your perspective and build on each other’s ideas. Form diverse teams with people from different backgrounds and different skill sets to foster innovation.

Looking after your well-being is all about rest and relaxation, plus physical exercise. A well-rested mind is more likely to think creatively. Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Physical activity can boost brain function and foster new neuronal connections.

Who better to offer advice on this topic than English comedian and actor John Cleese, who said, “If you want creative workers, give them enough time to play.”

By practicing, I mean taking time each day to engage in a creative activity, even if it’s just doodling or writing a short poem or story. Study the work of creative geniuses in any field to understand how they think and approach problems. People’s lives change in three ways – the books we read, the people we meet and the places we travel.

Remember, creativity is not a talent reserved for the few. It is a muscle that can be strengthened with use. Keep pushing the boundaries of your imagination, and don’t be afraid to think differently.

Creativity doesn’t wait for the perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Food Choices

Food is a necessity in our lives. Sometimes we eat because we are hungry, sometimes because we are nervous, agitated, bored or just can't seem to find the satisfaction we want in our lives.

During the holiday season, we grab a candy, cookie or other sweets, placed in a convenient location. Maybe we have been invited to a table that is filled with the good food that we have looked forward to all of our lives. Quite often our eating habits are excess.

Those of us in Minnesota have a family history that goes back to the 1800's. Our ancestors came to this country with recipes and food choices that had been enjoyed for centuries in the European home country.

Most of these imported recipes dealt with the basic food items that were most readily available in the European country. Children developed an appetite for these foods which continued through their lifetime.

The Swedes came to this country wanting lutefisk. The fish needed for this seasonal specialty were not common in this country, so in early years most of the lutefisk was shipped to this country from Scandinavia. Another fish-based dish was herring. Although our lakes were not producing very many herring, it was soon discovered that pickled herring could be made with local fish. The recipe for Swedish meatballs certainly found a home in the U.S.

Knäckebröd (crisp bread) is common in our grocery stores today. There are many more Swedish fish and vegetable recipes available if interested.

The Germans brought many recipes for sausage. This specialty frequently was made of the less desirable cuts of meat. It was then smoked, adding flavor and a much longer shelf life. The two most recognizable things that came from Germany were beer and sauerkraut. Both of these items were put through a curing process that allowed a shelf life of over a year. Many home-made bread recipes also came from Germany.

When one looks at a map of Europe, we find that when moving from Northern Europe south, the food eaten becomes more spicy. This is true of North America too. Is it because hot weather and hot foods match and cold weather and sweet and sour foods match? There may not be a definite answer to the question, but it is something to think about when sitting in the fish house and no fish are moving.

The reason that I started this story was because we live in a largely Hispanic neighborhood and when discussing foods, I found it interesting that many of the foods that we have consumed our entire lifetime are totally unknown by the neighbors. Many of the common foods taste entirely different due to their way of preparation. Different, but good.

One thing that has changed in my lifetime is that the Christmas Goose has, in many cases, changed to a ham. It's not easy to find a goose in the grocery store. It seems that there are not enough geese available and ham is easier to roast. A pig produces two hams, which are frequently cut in two, which makes four hams, plus the shoulders are made into ham, which makes two more

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I know for a fact there is a lot of anxiety in our world right now. Our own political arena is crazy and looking around the globe is worse. My brother has worked in hospital management for most of his adult life. He told me that the hospitals are filling up with respiratory viruses like RSV, Flu, and Covid.

Families are disintegrating and our economy is very fragile.

Things in Scriptures were no different. I have been reading in the book of Deuteronomy, where the children of Israel are ready to cross over into the promised land, and I can’t even image the excitement and anxiety that the people must have been experiencing at that time. Moses is about to die. He has been their leader through thick and thin for roughly 40 years, and now they are going to be given a new leader. This leader, Joshua, had to be told “Be strong and courageous” several times. And so, what they all needed was to put their trust in God! As believers in Jesus Christ, we know that it is futile to get “all worked up” about the problems of the world since we know the outcome (the book of Revelation). We are told in Scripture not to worry but to bring all our concerns to Jesus…with thanksgiving… and the peace of God will be ours. (...my own paraphrase of Philippians 4:6-7).

I was reminded of my ministry verse this morning when a friend posted it on Facebook.

Isaiah 41:9-10 “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, you are my servant; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So, do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Crash: January 10, 2024: At approximately 8:42 p.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a crash with injuries on County Road 9 and Koppy Lane in Avon Township. A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Nicholas Scott Mayer, 28, of Richmond, left the roadway southbound on County Road 9 and hit a road approach for Koppy Lane. The vehicle then struck a power pole on the southwest corner of the intersection. The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Laura Marie Polejewski, 24, of Avon. Both parties were transported to the St. Cloud Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Avon Police Department, Avon Fire and Rescue, and Mayo Ambulance. The investigation is ongoing, and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

January 13, 2024: At 5:39 p.m., the Sheriff's Office received a report of a single vehicle crash on 150th Street, west of 341st Ave., Burtrum. A vehicle being driven by Joshua Marty, was traveling east on 150th St. Marty's vehicle had crossed the center of the roadway, entering into the north ditch, coming to a rest after colliding with a tree. Marty was later transported to the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie with serious injuries. The Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by the CentraCare Ambulance and Swanville First Response.

South Dakota State announces fall 2023 dean's list. More than 3,400 students were recognized for their outstanding academic performance over the fall 2023 semester at South Dakota State University by being named to the dean's list.

To earn dean's list distinctions in SDSU's colleges, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits and must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students with F, I, U, RI or RU grades are not eligible regardless of system term GPA attained. Note that this report includes courses that were taken at other South Dakota institutions this term. A minimum of 12 credits within the 100-699 course range must be taken. A student who passes pregeneral education courses may still qualify, if the student has 12 other credits that do fall within the 100-699 range.

Overall, 3,475 students from 39 states and 24 foreign nations are on the list. Nearly 1,500 students received a 4.0 GPA, and those are indicated with an asterisk.

Obituaries

Arnold A. Voss

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Arnold Anton Voss, age 95, of Albany, was held Monday, January 15, 2024, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. Arnold was surrounded by his family when he passed away at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home on January 11, 2024.

Interment took place in the parish cemetery.

Arrangements were with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany.

Arnold was born in St. Francis to Clarence and Agnes (Lange) Voss. He lived in St. Francis until marrying Florence Wagner on May 18, 1957, in St. Francis and then the couple moved to St. Cloud, started their family, and worked at Franklin for 25 years as well as farmed. They moved to the family farm in 1971 and continued farming. They retired to St. Francis in the fall of 1994. Arnold was a farmer all his life. He was an honorary lifetime member of Knights of Columbus and Catholic United Financial. He was an active faithful member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church as long as he was able; he was a member of the Choir and the Men’s Society of St. Francis.

Survivors include his children, Craig (Rosanne) Voss; Lori Smith (David’s significant other); Steven (Patricia) Voss, and his grandchildren Bethany (Issac) Wheeler, Kristan (Robert) Rollins, Matthew (Mandy) Voss, Jacob Voss, Cory (Hannah) Voss, Justin (Erin) Voss, Ryan (Sara) Voss, and Megan (Mitch) Schulte and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Ronald (Shirley) Voss, Bernadette Voss, and Mary (David) Burke.

He is welcomed to his heavenly home by his wife, Florence T. (Wagner) Voss, 2010; his children, David Voss, 2023, and infant son Duane Voss; his great-grandchildren, Lincoln Voss and Aurora Wheeler; his parents, Clarence and Agnes (Lange) Voss. He is also preceded by his siblings, Glorine (Ed) Rasinski, Delores Voss, Barbara (Ralph) Harren, and Judith Voss.

David L. “Davey” Friedrichs, age 74 of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 12, 2024 at the Galeon Community Memorial Home in Osakis, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, January 18 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Mark Botzet officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by the Little Sauk American Legion.

Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Thursday at the church.

David Leroy Friedrichs was born March 6, 1949 in Melrose, Minnesota to Jerome and Vivian (Wallin) Friedrichs. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1969. He was united in marriage to Terryl “Terry” Didier on March 25, 1972 at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union. The couple farmed north of Sauk Centre for over 50 years and Davey continued helping Greg with field work. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk where he served as Commander for many years. Davey enjoyed riding around on his 4-wheeler checking on crops, playing cards, watching his children’s wrestling matches, and spending time at the family lake watching his grandchildren swim & fish.

Davey was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors. His family and friends will miss Davey’s quick-whitted humor.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Terry Friedrichs of Sauk Centre; children, Greg (Amy) Friedrichs of Little Sauk, Steve (Amy) Friedrichs of Monticello, Brian ”BJ” Friedrichs of Sauk Centre, and Amy (Chad) DeVries of Morris; grandchildren, Alexis, Riley, Brock, Hallie, Nicholas, Madelyn, Jackson, Grace, Benjamin, Natalee, Mari, and Callen; siblings, Sue (Kevin) Tschida of Sauk Centre, John (Lynn) Friedrichs of Osakis, and Diane (Scott) Hinnenkamp of Melrose; in-laws, Darryl (Vicki) Didier, Carryl (Doug) Vickerman, Fritz (Sharon) Didier, Huntz (Julie) Didier, Beryl (Dan) Blank, Meryl (Shelly) Didier, and Punky (Barb) Didier; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Richard (Dick) Rohe

Richard (Dick) Rohe passed away peacefully among family at his home on January 2, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. A private service was held.

Dick was born on December 4, 1940, and grew up in St. Rosa, MN with his three brothers and a sister. He married his wife of 60 years, Dorine (Linn) on June 22, 1963. They raised their family in Marine on St. Croix, MN. Dick was a working man and could out work anyone. He retired in 2002 from his manufacturing job but kept on farming.

Retirement was too slow, so he began working at the Berry Patch and worked there until his passing. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, farming, and his family. Family and friends will remember Dick as the best BS’er!

Survived by his wife, Dorine, daughters Dodi (Jeff) Anderson, Deanna (Mike) Brown, son Doug (Jenny) Rohe, grandchildren Alyssa (Matt) LaCasse, Jessica Anderson, Zachary (Sarah) Rohe, Rachel Brown and Lauren (Matt) Stehling, great grandchildren Jamie and Cody LaCasse.

Victor F. Sunderman

Victor F. “Vic” Sunderman, age 91 of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly surround by his family on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in the ICU at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 19 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A private inurnment will be held in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

The Mass will be live-streamed and can be found on St. Mary’s website.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Victor Frank Sunderman was born August 31, 1932 in Melrose, Minnesota to Tony and Anna (Volbert) Sunderman. From 1953-1955, Vic served in the Korean War. On July 6, 1955 he was united in marriage to Dorine Gieske at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. They were married for 68 years. Vic worked at Lake Henry Creamery then moved to Melrose and worked at the creamery there. In 1960, he started working at the Kraft plant in Melrose until it burnt down in 1989. Vic took on side jobs such as painting buildings and bartending. He became the VFW manager and was also on the VFW Drill Team for 64 years.

Vic was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and VFW Post 7050. Vic always had a way of making people laugh with his many stories and jokes. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, and spearing and spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all.

Survivors include his children, Gary (Mary) Sunderman of St. Joseph, Mark (Karen) Sunderman of Melrose, and Kay (Phil) Rolfes of Albany; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother, Bernie of Isle; sisters-in-law, Marian Goerdt of Melrose, Joannie Nathe of Anoka and Char Gieske of Anoka; brother-in-law, Jim Gieske of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Vic was preceded in death by his wife, Dorine; parents, Tony and Anna; brothers, Hubert, Harry and Roman Sunderman; sister, Delores Bromen; sisters-in-law, Margie Sunderman, Mary Sunderman, Delores Sunderman, Aurelia Sunderman, Ruth Ann Gieske and Louise Gieske; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Bromen, Pete Gieske, Chuck Gieske, Joe Goerdt and Dick Nathe.

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Rita Elizabeth (Harren) Schiller, age 94, of Albany, was held Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Rita was surrounded by her family when she passed away at the Melrose Hospital on January 11, 2024.

Interment took place in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany.

Rita was born in Morrison County to John and Elizabeth (Gerads) Harren. She married Harlin August Schiller on June 14, 1949, in St. Francis where they farmed until retiring in 1974 then moved to Upsala. She is a member of the Auxiliary, Christian Mothers and Daughters of Isabella, of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. She was also a member of the American Legion in Upsala and St. Francis Sewing Circle.

She retired from Stearns Mfg. in Grey Eagle.

Began her sewing career at Munsingwear in Little Falls. Rita loved to play bingo, cards, sewing, quilting, bowling, horseshow, and spending time with family. She really enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Judy (Jim) Douvier, Avon; Roger (LaVerne) Schiller, Aitkin; Kenny (Shannon) Schiller, The Village, FL; Steve (Patricia Lynn) Schiller, St. Cloud, 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her siblings, Regina Hoeschen, Freeport, and Eugene (Connie) Harren, Sauk Centre.

She is preceded in death by her husband Harlin August Schiller (March 2000), and her parents John and Elizabeth (Gerads) Harren. Son, Mike Schiller (December 2021), and her siblings, Magdalene Kraemer-Faber, Edmund Harren, Lawrence Harren, Conrad Harren, and Jeanette Steuve. Her great-granddaughter Abigail Jean Douvier.

Marcus J. “Mick” Engle

Marcus J. “Mick” Engle, age 77 of Sauk Centre and Abbeville, Alabama, died peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at his home in Alabama.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, January 16 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Mark Botzet officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Marcus James Engle was born September 17, 1946 in Melrose, Minnesota to Lester and Eleanor (Beste) Engle. Mick graduated from Sauk Centre High School and furthered his education at Alexandria Technical College where he took up welding. He was united in marriage to Susan Marie Terfehr on February 19, 1966. He worked at Gillies Welding Shop until he opened Engle Fabrication. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Mick enjoyed multiple years of Drag Racing, raising cattle, hobby farming, and most of all, being the “Boss”.

Survivors include his sons, Michael (Janna) Engle of Sauk Centre and Dustin Engle of Sauk Centre; five grandchildren, Ethan, Nelson, Lily, Riley and Rykin; brothers, Joe Engle, Lynn (Janet) Engle, Paul (Arlene) Engle, Bruce (Laurie) Engle all of Sauk Centre, Perry (Molly) Engle of Maplewood, Dan Engle of Little Sauk, and Roger (Carol) Engle of West Union; sisters, Paulette Tabatt of St. Cloud and Bonnie Tiemann of Sauk Centre; sister-in-law, Joyce Klimek; brother-inlaw, Mark Terfehr; and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine C. Fischer, age 77 of Melrose, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, January 22 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Lorraine Clara Doll was born November 16, 1946 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Fuchs) Doll. She grew up in Avon where she went to school and helped on the family farm. She then began working at Jennie-O where she met Clarence. She was united in marriage to Clarence

Gary H. Lange

Gary H. Lange, age 83 of Holdingford, passed away after battling a long illness on Monday, January 15, 2024 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, January 20 at All Saints-St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford with Rev. Virgil Helmin officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at All Saints-St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Gary was born on December 21, 1940, growing up on a farm near Holdingford. He graduated from Holdingford High School in 1958 and married Audrey Zwak in 1963 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Opole, MN. He spent his working years as a truck driver. First as an independent milk hauler, then for the Holdingford Mill, and beginning in 1969 for Maiers Transport & Warehouse in St. Cloud, MN, retiring in 2006. Awarded many times for his safe driving, he enjoyed seeing the countryside through his windshield.

Gary was dedicated to his family and his hometown. He and Audrey raised four sons in Holdingford, he was a lifelong member and longtime usher at the St. Mary’s Parish, a 28-year member of the Holdingford Fire Department and served nine years on the Holdingford City Council. Gary provided calm, thoughtful, and dependable service to his community.

He cherished his time with family and friends, playing cards, watching sporting events, fishing, and visiting. A farm boy at heart, he was ready to help when needed. He had a quick dry wit, wonderful sense of humor, and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Audrey Lange of Holdingford; sons, Scott (Lori) of Rapid City, SD, Dean of Sartell, MN, Mark (Polly) of Hollister, CA, and Brad (Sonya) of Sauk Rapids, MN; grandchildren, Andrew, Halie, Taylor, and Riley; sister, Lois Solinger; and sister-in-law, Linda Zwak (Pat Marsolek).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Francis; Audrey’s parents, Roman and Sophie Zwak; brother-in-law, Andrew Solinger; and former brother-in-law, Robert Ehrlichman, Jr. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose.

Fischer on May 5, 1973 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple raised their family and later, Lorraine enjoyed babysitting for Roman’s children and her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Lorraine enjoyed word searches, puzzles, and helping put Clarence’s flea market items together. She loved watching the Minnesota Twins, wrestling, and old time westerns, listening to old time country music, and knitting afghans which she would often donate to the Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Fischer of Melrose; children, Keith (Anne) Fischer of Freeport and Tammy Fischer of Alexandria; grandchildren, Ethan and Alexis; brothers and sister, Donald “Clem” (Mary) Doll of Avon, Leona (Ronald) Maidl of Avon, and Roman (Sheila) Doll of Melrose; and brother-inlaw, Ervin Bueckers of Melrose.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Bertha Bueckers.

S h a r o n Elizabeth Quistorff, age 54 of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, January 18 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be at Silver Creek Cemetery in West Union Township.

Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Sharon E. Middendorf was born December 16, 1969 in Melrose, Minnesota to Gerald "Jerry" and Diane (Stoermann) Middendorf. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1988.

On April 14, 1989, she married Jeff Quistorff at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose. Sharon worked at the Pride of Mainstreet Dairy from 1988 to 2015 and worked her way to plant manager before they closed their doors. She then was employed at H&R Block. Sharon was currently working at Holy Family School as cafeteria supervisor where she loved all the children and enjoyed telling them jokes and praying with them.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church where she as an active member with the Christian Mothers, Adoration, Eucharistic Minister, and marriage sponsor couple. She enjoyed the task as curriculum coordinator for the religious education program and treasurer for the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 67. Sharon looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and family, playing board and card games, especially Carbles, baking, cooking, doing puzzles, and going out for supper with the Auxiliary gals.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Jeff Quistorff; daughters, Megan (Lance) VanHavermaet and Amber (Mitch) VanHavermaet; grandchildren, Marie, Henry, Ali, Easton, Clayton, Mallory, and Lindy; parents, Jerry and Diane Middendorf; brothers and sisters, Kevin (Laurie) Middendorf, Jamie (Kristie) Middendorf, Kris (Shanna) Middendorf, Eric (Marcie) Middendorf, and Aaron (Sarah) Middendorf; in-laws, Roger Quistorff (Karole Sorenson), Mike (Dora) Quistorff, Andy (Connie) Quistorff, and Jack Quistorff (Christy Rutten); sister-in-law, Laurie Quistorff; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m about ready to start hauling my trailer for the season and will be using more than one vehicle. What kind of things should I be thinking about before heading out with a trailer?

-Mike in Decorah, Iowa Dear Mike, I’m glad that you’re thinking ahead.

Too many people just assume the vehicle they have is ready just because it has a hitch on the back. The first place to start is to make sure what you are pulling can safely be towed without overloading your vehicle, once that it done a safety inspection is in order. All of the items that the vehicle needs to operate such as steering, brakes, cooling, etc. will now be done for two so if it can’t handle itself how will it handle towing? Have the vehicle raised on a hoist to check the suspension and brakes, replace worn parts for safety. Check the tires and make sure they are properly inflated and not cracked. Also check their load rating. Check the condition of the hitch and light wiring and inspect your engine and transmission cooling systems. Dirt and debris should be rinsed away from the cores with low pressure water. If you do not have a transmission cooler ask your mechanic about one, it may save you from having a transmission replaced prematurely. Don’t forget to check the trailer for safety as well.

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Wendy Rene, Lana Bartells, Alan Gunderson, and Mitch Lange. Staff present: City Clerk-Treasurer Jane Popp.

Minutes: Bartells moved to approve minutes with the change of Lange abstaining from the Fire Department officers motion from December 4, 2023, City Council Meeting, 2nd by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Rene moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Chief and deputy chief were absent, and nothing was reported.

First Response Team: First Response Team Vice President Haus reported three calls for December. They received applications and will set up interviews.

Maintenance Report: Tschida was absent, so Johnson reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the city.

Tschida received confirmation from the Minnesota Department of Health that the city was awarded the grant to replace the fluoride feed equipment in our water plant.

City Office Report: Popp reviewed the January Calendar.

Planning Commission: Planning & Zoning commission and council will be meeting with Sourcewell on revising and updating Upsala City ordinances.

The council had a discussion on stray cats and dogs in town and are researching what can be done.

Unfinished Business: New Business: 2024 Elected Leaders Institute: Rene moved to approve the council members that are interested in attending the Advanced Elected Leaders Institute in Alexandria to provide city leadership on February 23 & 24, 2024, 2nd

by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Discussion was held regarding the drainage issue on the south end of the Fire Hall. All easements have been signed by the adjoining residents. The City will contact Jarvis Butler to let him know we will proceed with the project in 2024 as weather allows.

Discussion was held on the recent architect visit to the Village Hall. A partial report from the architect was shared with the Council.

The third quarter (July – October) 2023 reports from PeopleService were reviewed.

Discussion was held on the new ESST (Earned Safe & Sick Time) law going into effect January 1, 2024.

The Avon Women of Today are sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024 from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Community Church, 204 Avon Avenue North, Avon.

The American Red Cross went on a National Appeal for Blood Donations. We’re facing an emergency blood shortage, with the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. We experienced a nearly 7,000-unit shortfall in blood donations between Christmas and New Year’s Day alone – which is impacting the availability of blood products and can lead to dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to help patients who are counting on lifesaving blood following accidents, during surgeries, and for treatment of conditions such as sickle cell disease and cancer.
