The wisdom of Bruce Halle -By Harvey Mackay I often use the expression – One person can make all the difference in the world.

That adage certainly applied to my friend Bruce Halle who recently passed away. Bruce was the founder of Discount Tire, the nation’s largest tire and wheel retailer with 975 stores in 34 states and more than 20,000 employees.

He truly was a self-made man, working as a paperboy as I did, and even being a gravedigger to support his family. He tried selling life insurance

before he opened his first tire store in 1960 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was the sole employee. His original inventory consisted of two new tires and four retreads. Like many entrepreneurs, Bruce did everything from cleaning toilets to painting signs.

The company grew at record speed because of Bruce’s leadership and his three-pronged approach – provide reasonable prices, tremendous customer service and guarantee satisfaction.

He believed that happy employees make happy customers. He taught his employees to live by the credo: Treat others the way you would want to be treated.

I’d like to focus on one of Bruce’s quotes and provide you with my thoughts: “There are really just five simple lessons to life: Be honest, work hard, have fun, be grateful and pay it forward.”

Honesty Tell the truth at all times to build solid relationships. Your word has to be your bond. Complete honesty in little things is not a little thing at all.

Honesty, ethics, integrity, values, morals – all mean the same thing. In my estimation, you can interchange them, because they all convey the single attribute that determines whether a person or an organization can be trusted.

Work Hard The only place where success comes

before work is in the dictionary. There is no magic formula for being a success.

It takes hard work. Hard work is not a bad thing. Sure, natural talent can make a big difference. But show me a natural .300 hitter in Major League Baseball, and I’ll show you someone who bangs the ball until their hands bleed trying to keep that stroke honed. Ask any surgeon about how much sleep they got for the eight to 10 years it took them to get through medical school, internship and residency. Ask any concert pianist how much practice it takes to perform a 40-minute piano concerto from memory. All these gigs take more than magic hands. It takes iron determination and lots of hard, hard work. The harder you work, the luckier you’ll get.

Have fun Business and fun are not polar opposites. In fact, another piece of advice that I share frequently is “Do what you love, love what you do and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” Adopt a TGIM attitude – Thank God It’s Monday. A positive work environment encourages fun. Quite often, those are the most successful enterprises as well.

Be grateful Gratitude should be a continuous attitude. It’s very disheartening to see a decline in the use of “thank you” by so many. When I hold doors open for people, I seldom hear a thank you.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Aunt Ree

Sometimes my readers tell their interesting life experiences and want to share them with us.

Here is one lady’s memories.

Aunt Ree was raised on a farm southwest of Albany. She walked to school 5 miles each day.

One memorable thing about school was the Karo Syrup sandwiches she had in her lunch box each day.

Another experience was having a car go through a mud hole while passing her on the way to school. The dirty mud drenched her school clothes and when she got to school, the teacher told her to change into her gym clothes. She was teased all day, because no female ever wore anything other than a dress in school. Today, girls wearing pants, is totally acceptable.

Her sister enjoyed sewing, and she sewed a sheet with straps on it, which was suppose to be a parachute. So Ree tried it out by jumping off of the high side of the chicken barn. It didn’t work very well, since she landed very hard with no broken bones, but many bruises and sprains.

After marriage Ree was married and moved to Northeast Minneapolis, where she was a cleaning person for 6 years.

The store was equipped with a security camera system and two new employees were caught stealing. One had watches from his wrist to his shoulder and the other had inside pockets in his coat filled with merchandise. Today when she sees someone with a long coat in a store or at an auction she wonders if the coat has inside pockets.

Her new employment was at a shopping mall where many unusual things happened. In one case, a guy was exposing himself and when security was called, they asked for a full explanation of the persons actions. The offended ladies asked if security wanted them to draw a picture. In another case the new fashion style for gals was to wear nylon blouses over a short sleeved top. One gal came to the mall with a nylon top with no blouse or bra underneath. After several distracted men had accidents, the gal was removed from the premises.

On her way home from work one evening, she stopped to get gas at a full service station. When she paid the attendant, he asked her to come onto the station, because he thought she had a counterfeit $10.00 bill. When she got into the station, she was told that there was a guy hiding in her back seat. Police came and he was arrested. Now she always looks in the back seat of the car before entering.

Aunt Ree now is retired and lives back in an area where she feels safe. Her strong Christian Faith is her comfort in her retiring years.

When I go shopping and buy something, I’m usually the one saying thank you for serving me!

For a while, I thought it was just me, being overly sensitive. But a few years ago I was watching the “Late Show with David Letterman” and heard about a man who went into a store looking for an item. He found no one to help. The clerks were disinterested at best, rude at worst. After much searching, he finally found the item himself. At the checkout counter he found a long line of people and a clerk who definitely worked only at her own speed. Finally he paid for his item, and the clerk threw it into a plastic bag and shoved his change at him.

The man had to say something, so he asked the cashier, “Can’t you even say thank you?”

And the cashier said, “It’s printed on your receipt.”

Pay it forward When you have the opportunity to do something kind or helpful for someone who doesn’t expect it, take it! It’s even better when the recipient doesn’t know who is responsible. We all have enough time and resources to lend a hand. You might even make someone’s day.

Thanks for sharing your lessons, Bruce. We will sorely miss you.

Snowmobile Safety Awareness Week set for Jan. 20-28 Gov. Mark Dayton has proclaimed Jan. 20-28 as Snowmobile Safety Awareness Week in Minnesota.

This an opportunity for the Department of Natural Resources, volunteer safety instructors, the Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association (MNUSA) and its 250 member snowmobile clubs to join together to recognize the importance of safe, responsible snowmobiling.

“It’s a fun and exciting activity, but snowmobilers should always remember to make safety a top priority,” said Conservation Officer Bruce Lawrence, DNR recreational vehicle coordinator. “They should also always use common sense and keep a clear head when riding.”

Here are some other key safety points: • Snowmobiling and alcohol don’t mix - don’t drink and ride.

• Smart riders are safe riders, take a snowmobile safety training course.

• Always wear a helmet and adequate clothing.

• When night riding slow down, expect the unexpected.

• Know before the ride, always check local trail and ice conditions.

• Cross with care.

• Know risks and be prepared, make every trip a round trip.

• One is the loneliest number, never ride alone.

• Ride safe, stay on the trail, respect private property.

Obituaries Roger Harry Chuba

Roger Harry Chuba passed away on January 16, 2018 at the age of 84 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born October 29, 1933 and graduated from Upsala High School. On November 26, 1960 he married Mary Jayne Bjorndahl, they were married 57 wonderful years. Roger served two years in the Army, worked construction, owned and operated a chicken barn, and traveled the states doing craft shows. He was also a member of the Upsala Lions Club and a volunteer firefighter.

Henry A. Niemeyer, 85 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Long Prairie Hospital in Long Prairie, MN. Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Mike Gunnon officiating. Burial took place at Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Henry (Hank) Albert Niemeyer, son of Otto and Meta (Hansmann), was born September 12, 1932 one-half mile north of Long Prairie, Minnesota. In 1942 the family moved to Long Lake near Burtrum to establish their family farm. Following graduation from Swanville High School in 1951, Henry was on the farm and drove milk truck until 1953, when he was drafted into the Army. He served his time at Manheim, Germany until his discharge in the spring of 1955. He attended Telegraph School and worked in St Paul, Minnesota until completion of that training. On July 25, 1959 he married Leona Mae Palm of Swanville,

his family, crafting, trips to Vegas, and the casino. He also loved his time at the cabin going hunting and fishing, watching grandkids play sports, and his drives to the Dairy Queen.

Roger is survived by his wife Mary Jayne; children Rodney (Jackie) Chuba, Mark (Brenda) Chuba, Lynn (Scott) Depa, and Michael (Tracy) Chuba; 9 grandchildren, Ryan (Kristen), Angie (Travis), Jena (Tegan) Andrew (Brianna), Cody, Dylan, Haden, Kennedee, and Delaney; 3 great grandchildren, Benjamin, Adley, and Makenzie; and sister Shirley (Bob) Clear.

Roger is preceded in death by his father and mother Harry Chuba and Gladys Chuba.

A private ceremony will be held for the immediate family. The arrangements are with the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Minnesota. After living briefly in Fargo, North Dakota and St Paul, they moved to Glendive, Montana in 1959, where he worked for the railroad as a telegrapher/ wire chief, concluding his time in the material department in 1993. Henry also used his sheet metal skills working parttime for 25 years at Wagner’s Heating and Plumbing.

During the years spent in Glendive, Henry and Leona welcomed and raised four children. Henry held various board positions at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. and enjoyed reading westerns. Family time included deer hunting and the annual vacation to Minnesota to spend time with family, enjoying the farm, and fishing. A hobby farm south of Long Prairie (with green tractors and his Sheltie dog, Micah), was their pride and joy, along with the addition of five grandchildren. Days were enjoyed maintaining a large yard and garden, listening to old time music, ice fishing, playing cards, working jigsaw puzzles and meals with friends and family, until 2014 when the decision was made to move into town.

Henry was preceded in death by parents, Otto and Meta; sister, Huldena Roste; brothers, August, Marcus, Herman, Earl, Orville, Harlan and John.

He is survived by sisters Ann Burger and Beatrice Rahn and sisters-in-law Doris, Geneva, and Lola.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Leona; children, Nancy, (Terry) Pedersen, Sharon (Thomas) Neel, Gayle Zickuhr and Kevin (Jolee) Niemeyer; grandchildren, Breanne and Emily Neel, Chelsey and Kyle Niemeyer and Nicholas Zickuhr; along with numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Marlene R. Richards, age 73 of Sauk Centre, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, January 12, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, January 16 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Marlene Rose Dullinger was born May 12, 1944 in Collegeville, Minnesota to Louis and Frances (Kruse) Dullinger.

She was united in marriage to John

Richards. Marlene worked at Geno’s in Duluth for a number of years until she moved to Melrose. She then worked at Jennie-O until her retirement in 2007. She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Marlene enjoyed going to garage sales, playing cards and BINGO, traveling, Elvis, the Road Runner, and loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandson, Bryant.

Survivors include her children, Jon Richards of St. Cloud and Mary Richards of Melrose; grandson, Bryant Hanson; sister, Loretta (Alcuin) Renneker of Melrose; and brother, Bob (Deb) Dullinger of Stillwater.

Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, John Richards; parents, Louis and Frances Dullinger; and sister, Dorothy Groff.

Eleanor Theresa Froelich E l e a n o r Theresa Froelich (Brake), age 86, of Albany, formerly of Ward Springs, died peacefully at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home on Friday, January 12, 2018 in Albany, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 17 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating. Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Eleanor Theresa Brake was born February 26, 1931, in Ward Springs in Birchdale Township, Todd County to Frank and Caroline (Feldewerd) Brake.

On September 19, 1950, she married Michael Froelich in Ward Springs. The couple lived in Albany all their married lives. Eleanor was a cook at Holy Family School in Albany for about ten years.

She enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting and gardening. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Eleanor was an active member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and

Christian Mothers in Albany.

Survivors include her husband, Michael; two daughters, Mary (Mark) Monroe of Melrose and Donna (Brad) Blaha of Shakopee; grandchildren, Greg (Michelle) Monroe, Lisa (Christopher) Atkinson, Amanda (Amanda) Kaiser-Lee, Anthony Kaiser, and Melissa (Matthew) Crea; six great-grandchildren with one due in February; sisters, Sr. Helen Ann Brake, O.S.F. of Little Falls and Laura Zenzen of Melrose; sisters-in-law, Barb Brake of Minneapolis and Helen Brake of Ward Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Caroline Brake; brothers, John Brake, Bernard Brake, Henry Brake, and infant brother, Lawrence Brake; sisters, Clara Rahn, Irene Parish, and Marie Schmidt; brothers-in-law, Herman Rahn, Louis Parish, August Schmidt, and Ray Zenzen.

Serving as casket bearers were Gregory Monroe, Anthony Kaiser, Tom Dumont, Eric Willenbring, Larry Brake, and Kurt Zenzen. Cross bearer was Amanda Kaiser-Lee and scripture bearer was Christopher Atkinson. Gift bearers were her great-grandchildren. Eulogy was by the family and read by Christopher Atkinson.

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Theresa Roerick, age 89 of Albany, was held at 2:00 PM, We d n e s d a y, January 17 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Theresa died peacefully Saturday, January 13 at the Melrose Hospital. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Theresa was born April 23, 1928 in Krain Township to Herman and Rose (Thell) Beuning. She married Henry Roerick on August 27, 1946 in St. Francis.

The couple settled in Albany where they raised 7 children. Theresa worked for the Albany Area Schools for 10 years. She is a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Irene Langner, age 95 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 19th at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwigs in Holdingford. Fr. Gregory Mastey will officiate, burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Irene died Monday, January 15 at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Thursday at the MillerCarlin Funeral Home in Holdingford and after 10:00 AM Friday at the church in Holdingford. St. Hedwig’s parish prayers will be at 6:00 PM, the St. Hedwigs Christian Mothers will pray at 10:30 Friday in the church.

Irene was born May 1, 1922 in North Prairie to Andrew and Augusta (Mrosla) Borash. She married Joseph Langner Sr. on June 3, 1941 in North Prairie.

Angeline H. (Kulzer) Meyer Angeline H. (Kulzer) Meyer, age 84 of Meire Grove, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 18 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Greenwald.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Meire Grove.

Angeline (Angie) Helen was born to Frank Olberding and Mary Thull Olberding on October 11, 1933, in Spring Hill Township. Angie lived her entire life in the Greenwald/Meire Grove area.

Angie married Alcuin John Kulzer on April 26, 1950 in Greenwald, where they lived until Alcuin’s death on April 8, 1987. On June 11, 1993 Angie married Wayne H. Meyer and lived with him in Meire Grove until her death on January 13, 2018.

Angie was a hard working woman with many talents. She worked as a baking assistant in St. Cloud and a nursing assistant in Melrose, as well as in the Melrose Nursing Home. She was also a trained Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and was a first responder for the Melrose Ambulance Service. Angie also worked with her first husband Alcuin in his carpentry business as a painter and wood finisher, drove school bus for the Melrose School District, worked at Jennie-O in Melrose, as well as cooking

Angie was known as an avid card player and was particularly fond of playing Solo. While living in Greenwald she gardened and was known for her beautiful strawberries, and according to her children and grandchildren, she was a “world-class” baker. In her spare time she embroidered and crocheted.

Angie impacted many during her life time and will be greatly missed by her husband Wayne, friends and family.

Moves One Step Closer to $50,000 College Scholarship Lois Wardlaw, a fifth grade student at Upsala Elementary School, won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 11 and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. The school Bee, at which students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 30th Annual National Geographic Bee, a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world.

Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2018 National Geographic Bee. The school champions, including Wardlaw, will take a qualifying test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 6, 2018.

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to

Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 20-23, 2018. The firstplace national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the new National Geographic Endeavour ll. It did not matter how successful my life appeared to be to those around me, it did not matter how much land I owned or how many houses I had or how much money I earned. My life was on ‘empty’ because I could never fill it with enough things for the needle to move to ‘satisfied.’

-Heath Dear Heath, H o n e s t l y, I think the whole scenario is kind of silly.

Businesses that are suddenly into the “no cash” thing lose out on a lot of transactions. Believe it or not, there are still tons of people out there who make purchases only with cash.

So, from a business owner’s perspective this philosophy can cut into your market share.

I really don’t spend a lot of time thinking or worrying about the situation, though. When it comes right down to it, most businesses are doing that kind of thing for one or two reasons. Some of them just think cash is old school, and they want to give the impression they’re cutting edge and into technology. Others do it — depending upon the space they’re in — because their sales using plastic are higher than with cash.

I’m a cash guy. There are some situations where I might walk away if someone wouldn’t accept hard, cold cash, but in most cases I don’t think anything about it. I’ll just use my debit card, and buy what I need.

there’s nothing wrong with spending some cash if you can afford it. I just want people to make sure they have their finances in order first.

I recommend completing the first three Baby Steps before you run out and buy a bunch of toys. Just to review, Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000 for a starter emergency fund. Baby Step 2 is where you pay off all debt — except for your home — using the debt snowball method. In Baby Step 3, you go back and fully fund your emergency fund with enough cash to cover three to six months of expenses.

Completing the first three Baby Steps puts you on pretty solid financial ground. At this point, once you’ve saved up the cash, it’s okay to take a vacation or buy a reasonably-priced toy.

But don’t have so much fun that you forget about the other Baby Steps. Baby Step 4 means putting 15 percent of your income into pre-tax retirement plans, like mutual funds and Roth IRAs. Don’t neglect saving for college if you have kids. That’s Baby Step 5. Baby Steps 6 and 7 are paying off the house early, and building wealth and giving like never before.

Remember, there are only three things you can do with money — spend, save, and give. You can do all three without putting yourself in a bind by following my plan!

Lisa A. Fiedler, age 42, of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 14, 2018 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, January 19th at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel presiding. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Lisa Ann Toenyan was born February 21, 1975 in Melrose, Minnesota, the daughter of Gary J. and Sandra K. (Moore) Toenyan. Lisa attended school in Melrose and graduated with the Class of 1993. Later in 1993, she graduated from Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minnesota with a degree as a Medical Assistant. On November 26, 1994, Lisa was united in marriage to Mark P. Fiedler in Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Minnesota. Together Lisa and Mark raised two children, Adam, age 18 and Kirsten, age 16. Lisa and Mark farmed with the Fiedler family. In 2005, Mark and Lisa became the co-owners of Centre Power Sports in Sauk Centre.

Dorothy J. Dyrseth, age 73 of Melrose, formerly of Greenwald and Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Saint Cloud Hospital in Saint Cloud, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 17 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Pastor Mike Carlson officiating.

Inurnment will be at MN State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date.

Dorothy Jayne Haugen was born June 13, 1944 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to Sam and Gertie (Nesland) Haugen. She graduated from Goodridge High School in Minnesota and continued her education at Mankato State University. She taught English at Cooper Senior High from 1965 to 1972 and was a substitute teacher from 1972 until her retirement from teaching in 1988. During retirement, she was a book editor for Vocational Biographies in Sauk Centre from 1988 to 2006. On August 28, 1965, she married Gerald “Jerry” Dyrseth at Telemarken Lutheran Church in rural Goodridge. The couple moved to

When Lisa was not working, she enjoyed spending time with family. From long weekends at the cabin, traveling – especially to Canada, Mexico or the Dominican Republic, or being in Sauk Centre to watch sporting events for Adam and Kirsten and dance recitals for Kirsten, she was always focused on being present for her family. Besides working at Centre Power Sports, she always enjoyed 4-wheeling and snowmobiling.

Lisa was a member of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and served as the secretary for the Little Birch Lake Association.

Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Mark; son and daughter, Adam Fiedler and Kirsten Fiedler of Sauk Centre; parents, Gary and Sandy Toenyan of Melrose; brother, Brian Toenyan of Melrose; grandmother, Darlene (Bloxham) Toenyan of Melrose; father and mother-in-law, Jean and Pat Fiedler of Sauk Centre; sisters-in-law, Jeanne (Mike) Bushard of Sauk Centre and Pam Gierke of Villard, Minnesota; brotherin-law, Paul (Stephanie) Fiedler of Sauk Centre; grandmothers-in-law, Martha Fiedler of Big Lake, MN and Donna Schaefer of Fairmont; many uncles and aunts; nieces and nephew, and cousins.

Lisa was preceded in death by grandparents, Justin Toenyan and Ralph and Jenny Moore; grandfathers-in-law, Edward Fiedler and William Schaefer; brother-in-law, Robert Gierke; and cousin, Taylor Toenyan.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Ardis M. Lehner

Ardis M. Lehner, 74 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at the Word of Life Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. Clayton Wilfer officiating.

Burial took place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. Ardis was born on December 4, 1943 to the late Frank and Gladys (Lowe) Kuechle in Kimball, MN. The Kuechle family moved to the communities of Albany and Holdingford and settled on a farmstead just east of Holdingford. Ardis resided there until June 6, 1963, when she was united in marriage to Sylvester F. Lehner at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford, MN. Sylvester and Ardis settled on a farm in St. Francis, MN where Ardis was a wife, mother, and homemaker for several years and active in the St.

Francis Church community. They lived on the farm for about 20 years, and then relocated to Upsala in 1983. She was a very talented woman, who loved to cook, bake, and especially enjoyed sewing.

Ardis shared her love for cooking with the community by working at several local restaurants as a cook and baker. She also worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose for several years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and her greatest joy was her 12 grandchildren.

Ardis is survived by her children, Nancy Lehner of Upsala, MN, Tom (Pammy) Lehner of Pearl River, LA, Jeff Lehner of Upsala, MN, Alice (Scott) Hamann of Albany, MN, Cody Lehner of Upsala, and Frank (Callie Arnzen) Lehner of St. Rosa, MN; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lottie Stewart of Holdingford, MN, Shirley (Harold) Dallmann of Watertown, SD; brothers, Henry (Gina) Kuechle of Upsala, MN and Harland Kuechle of Holdingford, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Joy Thieves -By Sheila Ripplinger The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. A thief never has the best interest in mind of the ones whom they are choosing to steal from. If you have ever been a victim of someone robbing something from you, then you have experienced the heartache of the theft that penetrates deeper than the loss of what was actually stolen from you.

It leaves us with negative feelings of being invaded, attacked and betrayed.

Your identity is often threatened, and you may put your guard up finding it difficult to trust again. The thief, on the other hand is more than likely thinking about who to steal from next. The thief is often a disguised enemy to those who have invested in them wholeheartedly and trusted them. Other times a thief is just a person who feels entitled and sets their sites on a target of their choosing with no apparent or sensible reasoning whatsoever.

Once something is stolen from us, it is rarely recovered, and if it is reclaimed, it is never viewed the same as it was before. It can either be a painful reminder, or it can become more special to us especially if the stolen thing has a personal or sentimental value that cannot be replaced.

One painful memory of such a theft happened years ago at a graduation party for one of our daughters.

Someone broke in to our daughter’s car ‘at her party’ and stole her large, cherished collection of music CDs that she had joyfully collected over the years.

Many of the CDs were personally autographed to her by the musicians themselves. They were recovered down the road- literally, scattered and broken and completely destroyed laying all over the tar on a nearby rural road. Whoever this thief was obviously knew our amazing daughter and wanted to cause her pain by what they did. That thief is still at large and my hope and guess would be that they still remember their vicious act and are not at peace with what they chose to do that day. My other hope is that they find true peace someday by seeking forgiveness.

Material theft is painful and difficult indeed. However, I believe that emotional theft may be even more trou-

bling. Material things are material. They will be gone one day. Theft of the inner being can be damaging to the heart and soul if the enemy the thief gets his or her way. They can squelch the joy right out of us if we are not careful. Joy is one of the gifts that God gives us when we truly know and follow Jesus. It is that true peace that passes all human understanding. When we have that wonderful true joy, the joy thieves see something in us that they want and set out on a mission to steal it. They think that by stealing our joy it will somehow feed their ego, yet what they do not realize is the fact that they cannot use it for themselves after stealing it. Their own hearts are so infected with pride, jealousy, bitterness, selfishness, hatred and the sorts, that they become more poisonous even to themselves after the robbery is complete.

One of my favorite quotes from one of the most respected people in my life is this: “Do not let anyone steal your joy!” We must choose to guard and protect our hearts in a similar way that we protect our homes. We make sure our doors are locked, our security alarm is set up, and our cameras are on. Our hearts have a similar alert system available if we would just tap in to it and put it to good use! Proverbs 4:23 says, ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.’

We pay a large bill to ensure the safety of our homes against burglars, hoping to never actually be robbed. What is the price you would pay to protect what you have stored up in your heart? Your storehouse of honesty, integrity, kindness, knowledge, humility, and joy are most certainly worth protecting from the enemy the thief. Christ has paid our debt to set us free! His Holy Spirit is the deposit for the security system that we need to keep us safe and protected.

He alerts us when thieves are trying to break in and attempt to steal our joy. It is up to us to pay attention to those alerts and be on guard.

Paul writes in 2-Timothy 1:14, “Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you- guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.” If you have this joy that is made complete

by truly knowing Jesus and believing in Him, then protect your heavenly treasures by guarding your heart. Listen to the alerts that go off that warn us when a thief is attempting to steal from us. The thief is a liar. The Truth security system is free, although we do become a larger and brighter target when we choose to live this way. The enemy is constantly sneaking around trying to steal and destroy what we have because he has an agenda that is corrupt and evil. He often disguises himself to make temptations nearly impossible to resist. He is very good at fooling people and causing them to fall. We do not need to look too far to see his damage in the after effects of his lies that good people have fallen victim to.

A very wise man once said, “The thief cannot steal our salvation, but he can steal and destroy our testimony if we do not guard it.” Believe me, the enemy does want to steal our testimony, because if he can accomplish that, then he has succeeded in taking us out of the good witness program and it is extremely difficult for us to get back in.

He knows this- hence why we must protect our joy from the thieves!

John 10:10~ ‘The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’~ Jesus Romans 15:13~ ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him!’

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Of Whom Moses and the Prophets Wrote, John 1:45 John 1:45, “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’” The phrase, “Moses and the prophets” is a Hebrew way of saying the Old Testament. The Old Testament spoke of a Savior who would come to save mankind from their sin, the promised seed of Adam and Eve, the ark in which believers are saved from God’s judgment, the descendant of Abraham who would be a blessing to all nations, the heir of David who would sit on his throne forever, the messiah, the one who was to come and deliver God’s people once and for all from eternal death.

Jesus from Nazareth? Nathanael was even a little skeptical, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth,” he asked? His doubts were easily put aside when Jesus used his divine knowledge and shared with Nathanael what he was doing before Philip found him; this is not the case with most people.

Most fallen and sinful people need more proof that Jesus is the messiah than just knowing where someone was sitting, and that is where the Old Testament comes in. Woven throughout the Old Testament scriptures are prophecies of events that would match the coming of the Savior. Nothing of too great detail but a hodge-podge of clues and signs that when combined together narrow down the possibilities so severely that we are blessed if even one man in the history of the world matches it.

To often our faith in Jesus is brought into question because the signs that

identify him as the Savior are brought into question or discredited by a world whose will is bent against God’s will.

The details that give substance to our faith are lost in the hecticness of life.

The clues of who the one savior of the world is to be are buried within the pages of the Old Testament because we don’t take the time to read and study it as we should.

God’s Word, both the Old and New Testament, are the divinely inspired revelations of Jesus and the salvation God delivers through him. The church, the body of believers to whom the Word is rightly administered and taught, shares with those gathered the full council of God, all of the things written concerning Jesus of whom Moses and the prophets wrote. The mission of the church is to share Jesus of Nazareth to those inside and outside of the church in the hope that all people come to this knowledge of truth and are saved.

It is that which has been written, the word of God that reveals to us beyond all doubts that good does come out of Nazareth, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. The Old Testament revealed beforehand who the Savior would be.

The Gospels are the first-hand accounts of the life and works of Jesus that fulfill what Moses and the Prophets wrote.

This is what our faith is built on, nothing more and nothing less than the Word of God and the one of whom it speaks, Jesus of Nazareth. Amen.

January 12, 2018: At 11:02 Robert Poganski reported his fish house had been stolen while parked at a cabin on Big Birch Lake. The theft happened sometime between 1-4-2018 and 1-11-2018. The fish house is a 1990, 6x12, white in color with single axle crank down wheels.

January 14, 2018: At 00:42 there was a report of a one vehicle accident on County Road 38. Adam Berry of rural Long Prairie was traveling westbound on County Road 38 when he lost control of his 1996 Ford Ranger. The vehicle sustained light damage and was towed from the ditch.

Berry did not receive any injuries.

January 14, 2018: At 15:27 there was a report of a one vehicle accident on Lightning Pass. Andrew Katterhagen of Long Prairie was traveling eastbound on Lightning Pass when he lost control of his 2006 Ford F150. The vehicle sustained front end damage and was towed from the scene by the registered owner. Katterhagen did not receive any injuries.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month

Birth defects are common, costly, and critical. In the United States, a baby is born with a birth defect every 4 ½ minutes leading to 120,000 babies affected each year. Birth defects are the most common cause of death in the first year of life and the second most common cause of death in children aged one to four years.

Although not all birth defects can be prevented, steps can be taken to increase a woman’s chance of having a healthy baby. Some infections before and during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects and other health problems. Join the effort to raise awareness of birth defects by encouraging all women to prevent infections for their baby’s protection.

Here are some helpful tips for pregnant women or women who may become pregnant: Get vaccinated.

• Get the flu shot and whooping

cough vaccine.

• Become up-to-date with all vaccines before getting pregnant.

Prevent insect bites.

• Use insect repellent.

• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outside.

• Consider avoiding travel to areas with Zika virus.

Practice good hygiene.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water.

• Avoid putting a young child’s cup or pacifier in your mouth.

Talk to your healthcare provider.

• Ask about how you can prevent infections, such as Zika virus.

• Discuss how to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
