Taking a risk is good business -By Harvey Mackay Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric, talked about the three jobs he had growing up in Salem, Mass.: caddying, punching holes in a piece of cork and selling shoes. He loved being out on the golf course because he’d hear about the big deals being made by affluent businessmen, according to a story on the Reader’s Digest website.

monotony. “It lasted about a month,” he says, “and I concluded that I never wanted to do anything like that again – ever.” And he kept his promise; he never returned to anything remotely similar.

It was through his third job, selling shoes, that he learned the basic tenet of business: close the deal. “If they didn’t like a shoe,” he says, “I always tried to be thinking ahead to a pair they might like better.” Every time someone walked into that store, he said, he felt he was going to bat and taking a swing.

“Today I believe that the worst sin in running a big company is to manage its size rather than using that size,” he said.

“The advantage of size is the resources it gives you to go to bat often. You have to take risks in business. If you take a risk and fail, get up to bat and swing again.”

Risk is necessary for a company to grow and prosper. Pharmaceutical manufacturers always take a risk when bringing drugs to market. But because they are willing to take these risks, lifesaving drugs have dramatically extended our life expectancy.

Business is filled with stories of companies that took risks and succeeded.

My favorite quote on risk-taking is from one of my heroes, Earl Nightingale, a pioneer of the personal development industry. Earl said: “You can measure

opportunity with the same yardstick that measures the risk involved. They go together.”

King Camp Gillette, who founded the company that bears his name, dreamed of developing a disposable shaving razor that caused investors, metal engineers and even experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to question his invention.

Gillette worked four years to develop a razor sharp enough to provide a clean shave and yet cheap enough to be thrown away when dull. It took him another six years to get it in stores, and he sold only 51 razors the first year. However, his disposable razor went on to transform the shaving industry.

Mary Kay Ash similarly revolutionized women’s beauty products. Her first home show in 1963 produced sales of only $1.50. However after modifying her selling techniques, refining her packaging and adjusting her attitude, she had sales of $34,000 her first year. Mary Kay Cosmetics today has more than 3 million consultants in 37 countries and sales in excess of $3 billion.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Dreams We’ll take an imaginary look at a family wanting to live a dream, that they had told all of their friends and family about for the last few years. Its the middle of the 18th century and the local Ohio newspapers had been doing stories about free land and fantastic opportunities in Minnesota Territory. Wow, can’t wait.

So he left his wife and two kids and went to find a place for them to live their dream. He heard that there were hundreds of sections of railroad land, that was available to be occupied free.

After traveling by boat to Fort Snelling, he picked up a map and began his search. He rode his horse accompanied by some blankets, a rifle and a few tools, to find the ideal location. After traveling through rivers, swamps and vast forest, he found a place with a log house and shed that had been abandoned by previous dreamers. He spent a few months doing some fix-up jobs to the property and rode back to Fort Snelling to wire his wife that he had found a place.

She put their belongings in boxes and trunks, took the kids and boarded the boat for the trip to St Anthony.

During the week he had purchased another horse, a sturdy wagon and some

needed farm supplies. His family’s arrival filled the wagon with people and supplies. They then began the trip through swamp, rivers and forest to get to their new home. The trip took almost a week and since there were no KOA’s or Super 8’s, they “camped out” each night. The constantly harassing mosquitoes and rather basic food were different than what the family had been accustomed.

The arrival at the new home was also a surprise. The house was small for four people and since it had no “woman’s touch”, it definitely needed decorating.

The square iron stove along with the rock and cement chimney appeared to be adequate. There was an area created by joists attached to the logs to create a sleeping area in the roof for the children. At least one window needed to be added. There was a split wood table and two chairs, but two additional seating items needed to be added. A couple of split wood shelves were in one corner above a metal pail. Evidently this had been the cooking and washing area. A ladder was needed to get to the “upstairs bedroom.”A frame for a rope bed was left in another corner, but the rope was gone. He had purchased rope while waiting for the family in town and would recreate the bed. Some spruce bows or cat-tail stems needed to be added to create a mattress.

The outhouse appeared to be serviceable and the shed was big enough to handle the horses. There would need to be another shed, since a cow, some pigs and a few chickens needed to be

pantyhose and women’s shapewear was crazy. Today her undergarments are everywhere.

Perhaps the biggest threat to businesses is remaining comfortable.

The co-founders of Whole Foods Market dared to leave a successful grocery store business in the 1970s and invest in a supermarket devoted exclusively to natural foods. Whole Foods is one of the most successful supermarkets today.

A story in “Art and Fear” by David Bayles and Ted Orland illustrates the power of taking chances and risking failure when you’re trying to achieve something of quality.

On the first day of class, a ceramics teacher announced that he was putting his students into two groups. Half the students would be graded on quantity of works produced, the other half on the quality of just one work. On the final day of class, the instructor looked at the pots from both groups and realized that the best pots – those with the most creative designs and those that seemed most beautiful – all came from the group graded on quantity.

added to the homestead.

After a few weeks, mother began to realize that they were really alone in their new home. The nearest neighbor was a mile and a half away. The nearest store was two days away. The nearest doctor was at best, three days away. If they were hurt or sick, they would primarily depend on their own home-made drugs, which primarily came from the forest surrounding them. The Indians in the area knew some natural cures that were available and shared the recipes with the settlers. They were not able to attend church, since there were no churches.

Meetings were soon organized at houses to have bible services.

There was no electricity, wall phone, rotary phone, cell phone, radio, television, internet or any other communication devices. The communication was with the immediate family. During the winter months, there were months of confinement.

Today that same location may be a farm with 2500 acres and 300 cows. I guess times change.

Obituaries Colleen A. Butte

C o l l e e n A. Butte, age 61 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family from Metastatic Breast Cancer on Friday, January 11, 2019 at her home near Melrose, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 15 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose with Deacon Ernie Kociemba officiating. A private family inurnment was held in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Colleen Ann Butte was born September 27, 1957 in Duluth, Minnesota to Robert “Bob” and Joan (Honer) Lewis. She was united in marriage to Rick Butte on August 11, 1979 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The couple relocated to Melrose from East Bethel with their four children, Emily, Peter, Eric, and Curtis in 1993. Rick and Colleen owned and operated Hardware Hank in downtown Melrose until 1998.

After closing Hardware Hank, Colleen continued fostering relationships in the community by volunteering. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s Catholic School, the Melrose Literacy Project, and the Melrose Area Food Shelf, where she also served as a board member.

Colleen worked as the bookkeeper at St. Mary’s Catholic Church before becoming the Administrative Assistant at St. Mary’s School in 2014.

Colleen was a loving spouse, mother, sister, daughter, and friend. She valued quality above quantity. After moving to Melrose her parents purchased a cabin on Big Birch Lake. From 1998 to 2006 Colleen made countless memories watching her children grow, splashing in the water, learning to water ski, fishing off the swimming raft, and enjoying family meals at the old cabin. In 2006, Rick and Colleen built on their memories and renovated the cabin and built their forever home.

From 2006 to 2019 Colleen saw her four children grow, marry, and welcome grandchildren into the world. She continued to enjoy long summers at Big Birch Lake with her family and traveling to see her children and grandchildren in their homes. She loved to play 500, fish, make craft projects with her grandsons, and she always enjoyed a cold beverage from the comfort of her King Lounger on a hot July day.

Survivors include her husband, Rick Butte of Melrose; children, Emily (Evan) Goulet, Peter (Meghan) Butte, Curtis (Megan) Butte, and Eric (Lisa) Butte; four grandchildren, Cullen, Lyndon, Hank, and June, and a grandson due in March; dad, Bob Lewis; and mother-in-law, JoAnn Butte.

Colleen was preceded in death by her mom, Joan (Honer) Lewis on March 8, 2016; and brother, Mark Lewis in 1972.

Martha L. Bowen “Marmar”, age 63, Avon, MN, died Friday, January 11, 2019 at her home. Memorial services will be Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.

Martha was born July 25, 1955 in Columbus, OH to Patrick and Mayme (Pauley) Walker, Jr. She was a spiritual person who was mystified by nature.

Her favorite moments were those being surrounded by dragonflies. When fishing it wasn’t the catch or lack of, it was the moment. Martha was a mother to all!

Cel was united in marriage to Marcella (Och) Mareck and became the stepfather to her family of six children. Cel enjoyed searching for agates and had the ability to find them everywhere and loved sharing them with everyone. He and Marcy enjoyed countless hours dancing and playing golf in Minnesota and loved traveling to Arizona for the winter months.

Cel had a smart sense of humor. He was honored to be chosen as his nephew, Stanley Dingmann’s Godfather. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and was a life member of both, the VFW and the American Legion.

Survivors include his step-children, Pat (Gary) Probst of Sun City, AZ, Jim (Karen) Mareck of Austin, TX, Bill Mareck of Superior, WI, Tom (Carolyn) Mareck of Barrington, NH, and Judy (Dean) Mattson of Roseau, MN; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Joe Seifermann of Spring Hill and Al Seifermann of New London; and many nieces and nephews.

Celestine “Cel” J. Seifermann, age 88 of Melrose, died Sunday, January 13, 2019 at CentraCare Pine Villa Nursing Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 19th at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Father Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the Mass.

Celestine John Seifermann was born April 21, 1930, a son of Martin and Anna (Eichers) Seifermann in Spring Hill Township, Minnesota. Cel attended school and later joined the U.S. Marines where he proudly served his country.

He made working as a heavy equipment operator his career working for Mayer, Inc. and Herdering Construction in St. Rose, Minnesota. He was a very hardworking man and was a school bus driver in Melrose for years. On July 20, 1979,

Fred Dinkel

Fred Dinkel, 84, of Long Prairie, passed away on January 6, 2019. Funeral services were held Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Fr. Omar Guanchez officiating.

A private family burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date.

Frederick George Dinkel was born on his mother’s birthday, February 9, 1934, in Long Prairie to George and Marie (Koenig) Dinkel. He was a lifelong resident of Long Prairie, attending the Long Prairie School and later attended business college. In 1955, he enlisted in the US Army and was honorably

discharged in 1957. On May 28, 1960, Fred married Judith Sorensen; together they had four daughters.

Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, and loved to golf. He also had a love for pull tabs! Fred was the manager of the LPCC for many years.

Fred was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Knights of Columbus, Long Prairie City Council, Long Prairie Fire Department and the Long Prairie Country Club.

Fred is survived by his wife Judy of Long Prairie; daughters: Barb Dinkel Goodrich, Deb (Dan) Laumeyer, Pam Dinkel all of Long Prairie, Kim (Mark) Feist of Pillager; grandchildren: Eric Buhl, Jayson Dinkel, Kelly (Parker) Robinson, Hannah (Everett) Dotson, Brady (Nicole Vogt) Feist; great grandchildren: Mila Robinson and Violet Dotson.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Stanley & Doris Sorensen, sister & brother-in-law, Doris & Bob Olsen and brother-in-law Jim Sorensen.

Roger “Fuzzy” B. Schmid

R o g e r “Fuzzy” B. Schmid, age 86 of Avon, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 8, 2019.

Roger was born on September 21, 1932 to Benedict and Lauretta (Ashenbrenner) Schmid in St. Cloud. He graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School Class of 1950. Roger proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Occupation Forces in Germany from 1955 to 1957. Fuzzy was known for being a very generous person. He was a loving, dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

From Alaska to Panama, Fuzzy enjoyed fishing and hunting with many friends and family.

Alphonse J. “Al” Ellering

Alphonse J. “Al” Ellering, age 87 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on We d n e s d a y, January 16, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 21 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating, Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating, and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose at a later date.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m.

Sunday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Alphonse Joseph Ellering was born January 28, 1931 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Alphonse and Elizabeth (Welle) Ellering. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1949. On October 9, 1952 he was united in marriage to Carlyn Pappenfus at St.

Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Al owned and operated the Greenwald, De Graff, and Grove City elevators. He also owned hog and turkey farms in the area.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Knights of Columbus Council #1633. Al was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting a variety of game including deer, elk, antelope, waterfowl, and pheasants.

Al loved traveling out west for hunting and wintering with his wife in Florida.

Together they traveled to every state in the United States. Al also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Carlyn Ellering of Melrose; children, Paul (Joan) Ellering of Big Birch Lake, Ann (Kevin) Viere of Big Birch Lake, Lee Ellering of Alexandria, Chris (Terri) Ellering of Melrose, John (Karen) Ellering of Roseville, and Patrice Ellering of Big Birch Lake; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and sisters, Ann (Mel) Roerhl of Melrose and Mary Jacobs of Melrose.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Joseph and Anthony Ellering.

Rose Moore recently suffered several strokes. After a long hospital stay, Rose is now working on her recovery and therapy at her sister’s home. In an

attempt to help defer the cost of the medical bills and the required home remodel to make it a safe environment for her continued recovery, a benefit will be held at the American Legion in Melrose on January 19, 2019, starting at 2:00 p.m. There will be a silent auction throughout the afternoon, ending at 6:00 p.m. sharp. I’m no mechanic but I’m mechanically inclined from listening to Under The Hood, before that I just drove. I seem to be getting a common denominator between all of the models I look at, besides the high insurance cost and price tag. What I’m talking about is they all require premium fuel. I’ve never owned a car that needed premium fuel in any of the cars I’ve had but they were never this level of vehicle. Premium fuel is expensive, do I have to use it or is that just a gimmick or some deal the car guys made with the oil companies to make extra money? Thanks guys!

A fast-sporty car sounds like fun but there are a few things you will need to sacrifice to own one, money, money, and money. What you’re after will need more expensive insurance, more expensive upkeep, and more expensive payments. The upkeep part is very important if you want your investment to last. The premium fuel is needed due to the higher compression and if not used the mileage will suffer and the engine can be damaged by detonation that can destroy pistons.

giving me trouble. It’s my daughter’s car and yesterday when she left work at five, she couldn’t get the key to turn on. She said it was like it was the wrong key, she has two keys and she tried both.

We had the car towed and they ended up replacing the ignition switch with a brand-new part. I assume it was a quality part because we were at a dealership.

Now two weeks later we are having the same issue with the key sticking but if you wiggle it just a little bit it will turn on. I took it back to the shop and they can’t verify the sticking issue because it only fails every few days then works fine for a while. Do you think the switch is bad again and why won’t they just give me another one?

-Martin in Nebraska City, Nebraska Dear Martin, Yes you may have a repeat bad switch but you could also have a bad cable from the shifter to the ignition lock cylinder. They don’t want to replace the switch again if it’s not bad and you don’t want to have to come back again when it still won’t work. Work with them and get some options so you get it resolved.

Next, get that other key off her ring.

Using the wrong key in a GM lock can damage it so eliminate that possibility.

Overview of issues on tap as 2019 session begins The new session of the Legislature is underway, with the official swearing-in ceremony taking place last Tuesday. Even though it’s the beginning of my sixth term in office, it’s still a thrill to stand in the House chamber and take the oath of office to defend the constitutions of both our country and our state. There are challenges to be sure, especially at the federal level of government, but hopefully the spirit of compromise will prevail and solutions can be agreed upon so we can return to more normal operations in Washington, D.C. The issue of building a wall at our southern border has become the focal point of this latest impasse and federal government shutdown. But, is it really a wall that’s at the bottom of this stalemate? Or is it simply one side refusing to give in to the other? Has the spirit of compromise been lost in today’s political world? If it has, then we are all in for tough times. Because, to me, a basic tenet of politics is working together for the common good and, at some point in negotiations, both sides giving ground on something to reach mutual agreement.

Let’s hope and pray that happens soon.

The latest economic forecast had Minnesota basking in the light of a nearly $2 billion surplus. However, the last two months have seen revenue amounts coming in fall below that forecast. For the months of November and December, that shortfall amount was $102 million.

We need to exercise caution when deciding what to do with the surplus.

That’s because unless specifically noted as one-time-spending, any new spending or tax cut becomes permanent. So, if you increase spending in this biennium, that becomes part of the base budget and will occur going forward unless legislative changes are made. The same holds true for permanent tax cuts, which lower revenue coming into the state and will continue doing so going forward unless and until revisions are made to the tax code.

We have many areas that need attention. Improving our capacity to treat those with mental illness is high on that list. We have fallen short of providing the number of beds needed and the staff to care for and help those who need it.

We also need to provide more oversight in the area of elder care. If situations of neglect or abuse occur, the state should be ready and able to step in and correct the problem.

On the economic side, our state must deal with its tax situation. Because

of changes made at the federal level, filing taxes for the past year will probably be more complicated and more expensive for most Minnesotans. For businesses and farmers who take advantage of fast depreciation, conforming with federal Section 179 expensing is very important. In addition, changes made in treating like-kind exchanges need to be carefully examined and a resolution agreed to.

We are the only state in the country with a divided Legislature, so high-profile issues like gun control and single-payer health insurance will be contentious. So will the ever-present issue of raising the gas tax. And then, there’s the issue of making the recreational use of marijuana legal in Minnesota. I can’t understand why we would want to add yet another drug to those already available to get “high.” Yet, it seems there will be a push to get that passed, as well.

I urge Farm Service Agency customers in Stearns County to take advantage of a temporary window to conduct business with the offices amid the ongoing partial federal government shutdown.

The United States Department of Agriculture announced yesterday it will call back approximately 2,500 employees to staff select offices Jan. 17-18 and 22. Among others in Minnesota, FSA offices in Stearns, Becker, Morrison, Redwood, Swift and West Ottertail will be open those days to service existing loans and to provide limited other services.

Farmers have encountered numerous issues by being unable to conduct FSA business during the partial federal government shutdown, so this three-day period will be a time they can get caught up on important financial items. This is a limited opportunity, so I encourage farmers with FSA loans to take advantage of this period.

The FSA offices will be open regular business hours each of the three days. The offices will be closed for the federal Dr. Martin Luher King, Jr. holiday on Jan. 21.

January 12, 2019: At 12:58 Christian Payne report a vehicle fire at 18645 CO 11, Long Prairie. It was found that a 1997 Chevy truck had caught fire in the yard after it was parked. The truck was being driven around the yard and being worked on at the time of the fire. Long Prairie Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Grey Eagle Township January 7, 2019 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented.

Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda.

Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the December 3, 2018 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for December. Claims list included claims 3276-3285 for a total of $5,788.40. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included a Christmas card, credit card application, and trainings available through Minn LTAP. Reorganization – Meeting times stayed at 8:00 pm on the first Monday of the month. Supervisors compensation was raised to $80 a meeting and $20 per hour, all other duties and depository remained the same.

Mileage will be paid according to IRS rates. Posting places are still in the Township window, the Post Office, the Bank and the Credit Union. Ray made a motion to approve the reorganization, Mike made the second.

Motion carried. After discussion of the Treasurers report, Mike made the motion to move $25,000 from the General Fund to a CD. Ray made the second, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Discussion on the certified letter that was sent to a property owner. Hopefully, the road will stay in good condition so that repairs can be completed next spring.

Ray stated the “No dumping” signs could be ordered at $25 each. Mike made the motion and Ron made the second to have those ordered.

Mike asked about the forms needed for the contractor to begin any projects. Some discussion, it was decided to check if

these could be done ahead of time. Autobahn Road- will be checked when the Board does the spring road check.

Additional agenda item: The weed report was completed and signed by the Board chair and the Weed Inspector.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting.

Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

Regarding old business, it was looked into for snow to be moved to another spot and the state does not want to go into someone’s field for disposal and if they need to haul it out there will be a charge so as for now the dump site for snow will stay the same.

Next, in new business, Laurie Brown was present regarding the matter that there are some places in town that have a lot of junk in the yard that should be notified to have cleaned up.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

January 9, 2019: At approximately 9:05 p.m., a Morrison County Deputy noticed a vehicle traveling north on Highway 10 where the owner had a cancelled driving status. The deputy made a traffic stop on Highway 10, just south of Little Falls. During the traffic stop the deputy noticed items being thrown out of the passenger side window which were later found to be baggies and a pipe containing suspected methamphetamine. After a search of the vehicle approximately 10.5 grams of methamphetamine were located and seized.

The driver, Jason Clayton Adam Bailey, age 37, from Long Prairie, MN and the passenger, Robert James Dunham Devereaux, age 36, from Swanville, MN were taken into custody. They are being held in the Morrison County Jail pending formal charges for 5th degree possession of a controlled substance.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Little Falls Police Department.

point, the real issue isn’t the debt or the idea of using the gift you received to pay off the debt. The issue is you can’t see a future where your husband isn’t going to repeat the same financial stupidity. You need to have that future cleared up, and it isn’t going to be cleared up until he proves he has changed his heart and his ways. In his case, that means showing he has become a grown-up and isn’t buying toys he can’t afford anymore.

I know where you are, and I know where he is right now. I’ve been there.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Called by Name – Isaiah 43:1-7 We rarely get called by our full names. Moms and dads tend to reserve our full names - first, middle and last - for when they really want to get our attention. Our full name is not some shortened name or some nick name or some pet name we only use when someone is near and dear to us. Our full name is official, it is what we put on property and loans. It is who we are, the good, the bad and the ugly. Or is it?

Our birth name is important but there is another name we have been given that is even more important. It is the name we are given or called by God. Isaiah 43 is often used in connection to baptism, our baptisms, because like baptism in Isaiah 43, God speaks to us in a personal way. Luke 3:15-22 and Romans 6:1-11 are the other Lectionary readings for the day and they too connect us personally to our baptisms and most importantly to the baptism of Jesus.

Earning a bad name for yourself is not a good thing, yet I have earned plenty of bad names I fully deserve.

They are part of my own doing, partly because I am a fallen and sinful human being who lives in a fallen and sinful

world. Yet a name defines a person and I think that is why I am afraid of earning a bad name for myself. I am afraid that my fallenness will define me over and above any name I was given or have worked to earn in a good way.

I can’t speak for any of you but I know that I spend far too much effort being afraid and trying to look like a better person than I truly am. It is not all bad to act like a better person than you are because in doing so we do better things, but it is not the truth or reality. Before God, we must focus on the truth. We bare our souls and we should be comfortable doing that because God does not let our fallen names define who we are.

Baptism gives us a new name.

We are baptized into a different name.

A different name than we were born with. A different name than we get called when we sin. We are called by the name God gives to his redeemed people, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name you are mine.” So the name God gives us is, mine. His child, son or daughter of God, follower of Jesus, Christian, God’s. In baptism we are baptized into Christ and that is the name we are called by. For God calls us by name to

I just NEED to vent...I have had enough!!! I’ll never help anyone again...

EVER!!! I’m too kindhearted, or just stupid!

The other day it was so cold out that I took a man into my home out of the kindness of my heart. I felt so sorry for him. Poor thing looked about froze out there in the cold. Couldn’t even talk or move. But the next morning he had just vanished. Not a word...no goodbye or even a thank you for sheltering him!

The last straw was when I realized he had peed all over the living room floor!

That’s the thanks I get for being good to people???

I want to warn my friends to watch out for this man! He is heavy set, wearing nothing but a hat and scarf, he has a nose that looks like a carrot, two black eyes, and his arms are so skinny they look like sticks! Don’t bring him into your house! He will make a huge mess on the floor and then disappear!
