Then the coach proceeded to ask each player about his teammates. Do you know what their fathers and mothers do?

How about brothers and sisters?

And not one person knew a thing about their fellow team members’ families.

Many business leaders preach, “Know your customer.” How about “Know your team?”

At MackayMitchell Envelope Company we often utilize a questionnaire called the Mackay 33 for Managers. It’s designed to provide a personal profile of

the likes, dislikes and unique individual needs and qualities of each of our employees.

It is based on observation, not investigation, and is intended to motivate people and design individual career paths. We want to know their goals and aspirations. What motivates them? What are they most proud of achieving? What are their strengths/weaknesses? Do they have proper role models? Are they team players?

We also developed a Mackay 33 for Employees, which gets into company attitudes toward employees. Both forms are available for free under the Resources section of the Harvey Mackay Academy.

Your success as a leader—and your organization’s success, as well – depends on your ability to get the best from your employees. Often times, you spend more time with your workforce than you do with any other group, even family. Isn’t it important to get to know them as people and not just co-workers?

You can’t expect it to come automatically, though. You have to search carefully for each person’s exceptional talents. For every person you lead, see how thoroughly you can

answer the questions below: 1. How well do you really know the employee? What can you quickly recall of the employee’s family, personal goals, hobbies or other outside interests?

2. What do you know specifically about his or her career goals, both short term and in the long run?

3. What single word best describes the person’s job performance?

4. If this person resigned today, what would you miss most?

5. Can you name the person’s greatest strength or skill?

6. Can you think of the last time you discussed this person’s skills or talents directly with him or her?

7. What have you done recently to make the person feel like an important member of your team?

8. How recently have you asked for this person’s ideas or input?

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Home Sewing In years past, we were well acquainted with patches.

They were those special shaped pieces of cloth that were attached to any exposed piece of clothing that had a hole or tear. It was considered to be shabby to be seen with holes in your clothing. The patches were not necessarily attractive, but they were meant to cover any body part that was not to be exposed.

If your shirt tore it was patched. If your pants wore through on the knees they were patched. If your socks wore through on the bottom, they were darned.

If your shoes developed a hole in the toe or sole they either had a patch glued sewed or re-nailed on the top or the sole or heal were replaced by gluing, sewing and re-nailing. The life expectancy was there-by doubled or maybe tripled by replacing the patches.

We didn’t feel shame wearing an item that was patched. We would rather have something new, but patches seemed to express conservativeness, which was considered an honorable trait.

There were some new clothing items, but they were worn with care to keep them in new condition for a longer period of time. These were worn to church or other “very special” occasions.

After a while they could be worn to town or school until their appearance became shabby or torn. They were then sewed or patched and worn for “every-day.” If they were outgrown, they were saved for the next younger sibling or a relative that had grown to fit the item.

Quite often a new item of clothing

was not purchased from the store, but was sewn at home. Home sewn items were thought to be of superior quality and expected to have a longer life expectancy. The quality probably is based upon the better material which was used to sew the item, but also the wearer knew that someone near and dear had spent a lot of time building the item and that one should wear it with care.

Many clothing items were knit with wool, which was comfortable, warm and durable. It seemed to be an everyday happening to see a lady knitting sweaters, blankets or socks in a rocking chair after the evening meal duties were finished. In the earlier years, knitting took the place of today’s television.

When radio arrived, it was a perfect match for knitting.

Today when an item becomes damaged it is thrown away and replaced.

Sometimes the replacement item comes with already worn or torn spots.

Extra money is paid for the damaged spots. Tears in questionable spots are considered to be fashionable. Knitting today has been replaced by face-book and constant cell-phone attention.

Leadership in any organization with more than one employee needs to understand the importance of fostering an environment where teamwork is paramount. A really helpful feature of the Mackay 33 is that it provides guidance for assembling a team based on each employee’s strengths.

It doesn’t stop with managers knowing something about employees.

Co-workers must also get to know enough about each other to be able to relate well. Offering ice-breaking opportunities helps promote a sense of team.

I came across a rather novel approach – the toilet-paper challenge.

Gather employees around a table or stand in a circle and pass a roll of toilet paper around. Each person may take as many or as few squares as they wish.

Then, each participant has to state a tidbit about themself for each square they took – “I play pickleball,” “My first job was at a radio station,” “I show Siamese cats” – you get the idea. Nothing more than they are comfortable sharing with the group, just a little glimpse of their outside lives.

Seeing people from another perspective also exposes hidden strengths and shared interests. And the fun factor is an added benefit for any workplace.

Savana Bitz from Grey Eagle, MN, has made the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Dean’s List for the 2019 fall semester.

She has demonstrated her academic abilities by receiving a grade point average of 3.4 or above in a single semester.

Obituaries Isidore N. “Butch” Funk I s i d o r e N. “Butch” Funk, age 64 of Paynesville, formerly of Freeport, died p e a c e f u l l y, surrounded by his family on We d n e s d a y, January 8, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in Paynesville,

Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Isidore Nicholas Funk was born on March 22, 1955 in Melrose, Minnesota to Anton and Katherine (Moscho) Funk.

Butch has been with Catholic Charities and WACOSA for over 20 years. He enjoyed listening to music, watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins

and Vikings, and spending time with his family. Butch will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Ardell (Donald) Loehr of Prior Lake, Gerald (Susan) Funk of Long Prairie, Joyce (Roger) Schoenberg of Greenwald, Joan (Roger) Stradal of Sauk Rapids, Richard (Bonnie) Funk of Avon, Lee “Rick” Passek of Savage, Cindy (Roger) Stephanson of Mound, and Daryl (Karen) Funk of Coon Rapids; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Eldred “E.J.” Funk and Donald “Peter” Funk.

Serving as casket bearers were Jason Funk, Josh Funk, Ryan Funk, Paul Funk, Joe Funk, and Issac Passek. Cross bearer was Lucas Passek and scripture bearer was Nicole Tomsich. Readers were Kelly Roering and Eva Passek and gift bearers were Annie Funk and Lily Funk.

Readers were Amanda Blaskowski, Christine Steichen, and Abigail Blonigen and gift bearers were Carrie Dorrell, Brayden Blonigen, Emma Blonigen, and Elizabeth Pansch.

Leander M. Blonigen, age 79 of St. Martin, died Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, January 15 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B officiating. A family inurnment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. Military honors were provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Leander Michael Blonigen was born on the family farm on April 9, 1940 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Math and Veronica (Mayers) Blonigen. He was united in marriage to Annette Gertken on May 15, 1962 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Leander served 21 years in the Minnesota Army National Guard. Leander took over the family farm near St. Martin and also worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose for ten years, Towmaster Trailers in Litchfield, Frigidaire in St. Cloud for five years, and Cold Spring Granite for ten years.

He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, St. Joseph’s Society, and the American Legion Post 67 in Sauk Centre. Leander was proud to serve with the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard for many years. Leander enjoyed everything about farming, playing cards and BINGO, and going to the casino. He was a very social person who loved telling stories,

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Michael George Court, age 80, of Avon, Minnesota, will be 11:00 AM, Monday, January 20 at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Michael died in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family on January 10, 2020. Mike had been in declining health for many months. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Sunday, January 19 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany and again after 10:00 AM, Monday at the church. St. Benedict’s parish prayers will be at 4:00 and the Knights of Columbus will pray at 7:00 PM Sunday at the MillerCarlin Funeral Home in Albany.

Mike was born on June 5, 1939 in St. Joseph, Minnesota to George Court and Christine (Reischl) Court.

He was the ninth child of George and Christine’s twelve children. Ever the sports enthusiast, in his early years, Mike played the position of catcher for the Tech High School baseball team in St. Cloud and also for the local baseball team in St. Joseph. After high school, Mike enlisted in the Army Reserve and had his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Mike married Mary (Merdan) Court on June 6, 1961. After their wedding at St. John the Baptist Church in Collegeville, Mike and Mary resided in both St. Cloud and Avon, before building and settling in their family home five miles west of Avon. They were blessed with six children. Mike was an active father, attending every sporting event in which his children participated and sharing his passion for sports, especially golf, with each of them. After their children were grown, Mike got his motorcycle license.

He and Mary traveled extensively on motorcycle across the United States and spent multiple summers traveling through Canada to Alaska on his “two-wheeler.”

A private memorial will be held later this year to be followed by burial alongside, Jane.

Mike was a carpenter by trade, having completed a two-year carpentry apprenticeship at Tech High School, but the craftmanship and artistry of his work went beyond standard cabinetry. Early in his woodworking career, he worked at Felling Wood Products. Eventually, Mike opened Court Cabinet Shop, which he owned and operated in Avon for more than 25 years. Mike was also an active volunteer within the Avon community, serving as the Assistant Chief of the Avon Fire Department, a past President of the Avon Lions Club, and a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

After Mike retired and sold his cabinetry business, he worked for Albany Area Schools, driving the bus for area students and sports teams. He loved his work driving the bus, which afforded him the opportunity to attend countless high school sporting events and competitions. As he did with his own children, Mike was always quick to recognize and congratulate his studentriders’ achievements and hard work, encouraging them to strive to always do their best. He sponsored attendance for many Albany area athletes who otherwise would have been unable to afford to participate in summer sports camps.

Mike was a beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Mike is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary, and his children Gordon (Terri) Court of Fargo, Michelle (Peter) Nistler of Watkins, Paul (Jana) Court of Cold Spring, Patrick (Sharyl) Court of Cologne, Christine (David) Jackson of St. Paul, and John (Jane) Court of Avon.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Becky Berg, Ben Court, Josh Court, Sam Court, Max Court, Miles Jackson, and Nicole Nefstead, and his precious great granddaughter, McKinley Berg.

Surviving siblings are Francis (Marilyn) Court, Elizabeth (Ralph) Eiynck, Arlene (Mike) Gill, and Arnold Court.

Preceding Mike in death are his parents, and his siblings Leonard Court, Irene Maruska, Lorraine Janssen, Rosanne Stockinger, LaVerne Schmitt, Katherine Worm, and Adeline Hartung.

This goose is one of a family of four left behind when Pelican Lake froze over.

It had a bad wing and it walked with a limp. Now it is staying close to our bird feeder. It isn’t limping anymore and can fly. Hoping it makes it through the winter when the rest of it’s family comes back to the lake in the spring. Lucky at least it has a goose down coat to keep warm. Submitted by Joe Lang.

Local fourth graders learn about Minnesota Through The Lens: energy efficiency, electrical safety

Stearns Electric Association linemen Mike Siemers demonstrates the live home and safety model at Holdingford School.

Employees from Stearns Electric Association recently visited fourth graders from Holdingford and Upsala Elementary Schools to provide interactive presentations on energy efficiency and electrical safety.

Prior to the presentations, students learned about basic electricity principles as part of their school curriculum.

Throughout the one-hour sessions, students reviewed the things they had learned, including the different types of electricity, conductors and insulators, and sources of energy.

Students also participated in an allclass activity and provided ideas on how they can conserve more energy at home.

Stearns Electric’s live, energized home and farm model was the highlight of each presentation. Used as a tool to show students what can happen when they get too close to electrical equipment, students were fascinated with the electrical sparks and arc flashes demonstrated on the model.

The most important piece of knowledge students walked away with was information on how to react in a vehicle accident involving any electrical equipment.

As the students can tell you, you should always stay in your vehicle if it hits a power pole, unless your vehicle is on fire. If your vehicle is on fire near a power pole, you should jump out of your vehicle, keeping your feet together, and shuffle as far away from the accident as you can.

Following each live demonstration, one lucky student was selected to dress up as a line worker.

Donning a hard hat, rubber gloves, pole climbers, safety glasses and a utility belt, these students got to experience the real-life equipment line workers use on a daily basis.

As part of Stearns Electric’s commitment to safety and community, the Cooperative presents an annual one-hour energy efficiency and safety demonstration to fourth grade classrooms throughout its service territory.

Then, as the day unfolds and when the unexpected occurs and things seem upside down, we can know that He is holding us close to Himself and that He will protect us from that which might harm us. It is in His love that we are safe and secure. As Paul wrote, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” It is His love that keeps us close to Him and no one or nothing can break this bond that comes from Him. As we end each day, we are advised to praise God for His faithfulness. Indeed, by His grace He has brought us through another day and He has proven Himself to be trustworthy. Even when tragedy strikes or the light of His presence is dim, we have the assurance that He is with us.

If “things” look bad today, we can always look back at our “yesterdays” and see God at work in our lives and praise Him for His trustworthiness and faithfulness.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m having trouble with my 2004 Ford F150 missing again.

The vehicle shakes when I am at a stop sign and sometimes when I accelerate going up a hill. The check engine light comes on and sometimes flashes as well.

I have had two ignition coils replaced over the past year and they’re expensive! Could it be another one? I’d like your advice and thoughts on this truck. I really appreciate all your help guys.

-Mark in Branson, Missouri Dear Mark, The Ford F150 and most modern vehicles use what’s called coil-on-plug ignition which in simple terms means that the ignition coil is placed directly above the spark plugs and connected by a short rubber boot instead of using a plug wire. Using multiple coils allows the ignition system to work more efficiently when it is working correctly and eliminates spark plugs wires. When they fail they give the symptom you describe and cause poor mileage and rough running and possible power train and exhaust system damage. We often see all ignition coils fail within a short period of time to each other due to age and miles so be prepared to replace the other six coils. Due to the labor cost of working on them we often recommend replacing all at the same time to save labor costs even though the coils are not cheap. In the long run it will save a lot of cash over repeat labor repair costs.

help your engine performance. I have a camper and a boat that I tow and don’t want to go changing a lot of major internal parts but want a little extra “go” when I step on it when I’m towing and also some better mileage. What are your thoughts?

-Dan in Colorado Dear Dan, Cold Air Intake Kits are a great way to increase Horse Power and Torque and are an easy and fast way to do it. Don’t look for incredible gains but they will make a small difference and every bit counts when towing as you know. The kits are a bolt-on and can be done by most people at home in around an hour or less in most cases and they look great too. Get on the internet and compare the kits for your vehicle and look at the real numbers of what to expect from a kit before you decide to purchase one so you know what you are getting and are happy with what you are purchasing. They also give a great sound and a performance feel. As for mileage, don’t expect to see any increases there with any air filter or intake kit as they don’t provide that. They are for torque and HP increases only.

Grey Eagle Township January 6, 2020 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Also, Ruth Ann Bense and Erv Herdering Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the December 2, 2019 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to accept the minutes, Mike made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for December.

Claims list included claims 3393-3403 for a total of $14,055.34. Ray had a question about the culvert on the list. Mike made the motion

to table the approval of the claims until Erv arrives.

Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included a letter about the rate increase for Minnesota Power, Todd County with the possibility of a grant for assistive voting equipment, excess deposit insurance from the Credit Union and trainings available through Minn LTAP. Reorganization – Meeting times stayed at 8:00 pm on the first Monday of the month. All compensations, duties and depository remained the same. Mileage will be paid according to IRS rates. Posting places are still in the Township window, the Post Office, the Bank and the Credit Union.

Mike made a motion to approve the reorganization, Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Erv H. was asked about the culvert, it was put in on 140th and was billed at the end November but didn’t get to the Township in time for the December meeting.

Mike made the motion to pay the claims as listed, Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion approved.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray told Erv he would need to do a better job of getting the blade down on the tar roads. Erv stated he did the road in question himself and tried to get out as early as he could. Ron had two calls on icy conditions and had Erv spread gravel. Mike stated the supervisors should be watching culverts as there may be issues with all the water this spring.

Additional agenda item: The weed report was completed and signed by the Board chair and the Weed Inspector. Arden Drive assessments- Ray will speak with the land owners who have not yet paid. Letter will go out to Elmdale Township as in the past for the section of Brakken Road.

Minnesota Individual Income Tax filing season opens January 27, 2020 The Minnesota Department of Revenue will open the state Individual Income Tax filing season on Monday, January 27, 2020. For the benefit and convenience of Minnesotans, this date matches the opening day for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The filing deadline to submit 2019 Minnesota income tax returns is Wednesday, April 15, 2020. This date matches the filing deadline for 2019 federal income tax returns. Tax software providers and tax professionals may be accepting and preparing tax returns before January 27, and will submit those returns when the IRS and state systems open later this month.

“Filing electronically helps improve the accuracy of your tax return and, coupled with choosing direct deposit for your refund, is the most secure way to file your return and get any refund you may be entitled to,” said Revenue Commissioner Cynthia Bauerly.

“We also encourage qualifying taxpayers to take advantage of free electronic file options listed on our website as well as free tax preparation services that will be available around the state beginning in early February.”

Electronic Filing and Free Tax Help When you file your taxes this year, choose electronic filing. Last year, over 90 percent of Minnesota taxpayers filed their taxes electronically. Using electronic software is easy, convenient, and secure. Electronic filing also ensures

that you have the most up-to-date forms and instructions when you file.

Free electronic filing is available for Minnesotans who meet certain requirements. You may be eligible to file electronically for free if your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is $69,000 or less. She wants us to use a debt consolidation company, like some of her friends have done. I’m really against her idea, but how can I change her mind?

-Blake Dear Blake, I’m glad you two have made the decision to get out of debt, and gain control of your finances. When it comes to this sort of thing, it’s wise to remember there’s no magic pill. No debt consolidation company is going to get you out of debt and help you stay out of debt. The answer is learning how to control yourself and your behavior with money.

Using a debt consolidation company seems appealing, because there’s usually a lower monthly payment or lower interest rate attached.

The problem in most cases, however, is the lower payment or interest rate exists only because the term is extended. You might pay a little less each month, but you end up staying in debt longer.

There are other problems involved

in using debt consolidation companies, too. For one thing, it can trash your credit for a long time when it comes to buying a car or a house. For these reasons I sometimes refer to it as a CON-solidation, because the whole thing is basically a con. They make you think you’re really doing something about your debt problem, but the debt—and all the bad habits that caused it—are still there.

My guess is your wife’s friends think using a debt consolidation company is an easy, harmless way to get out of a financial mess. But sometimes you’ve got to be an adult, admit the mistakes you’ve made, and do what it takes to straighten things out. This kind of thing isn’t a math issue. It’s a behavior issue. Making the decision to get out of debt and never go back there again, by living on a really tight budget and making sacrifices, is the best way to fix this mess and learn a lesson in the process.

Live like no one else, so that later, you can live—and give—like no one else. Stay away from debt consolidation companies, Blake. Doing this the right way is worth it!

5 ways to achieve your own version of life balance

Overconnected.

That’s the world we live in today.

It’s overwhelming to say the least!

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found, on average, people with fulltime jobs work more than the 40 hours required of them during the workweek, and even spend an additional five hours working on the weekend. On top of that, women also spend two hours a day on household activities like cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry.

But you don’t need me or the government to tell you that. You live that every single day. The good news is, you don’t have to quit your job to find some form of work-life balance.

I’m a mom, a wife, and the creator of Business Boutique. I coach business owners, host a podcast, write books, and travel around the country speaking at events. The only reason I’m able to keep doing it all is because I’ve figured out my own version of balance. And I’m super passionate about helping others do the same.

Here are five methods you can try so you can achieve your own version of life balance: Prepare for the short seasons I’ve gone through two maternity leaves in my lifetime, and I’m preparing

for my third. When I know these seasons are approaching, I spend the few months leading up to them preparing my business, my team, and the rest of my family for my limited availability.

For example, before maternity leave I write tons of blogs and social media posts so that I still have content publishing consistently while I’m at home adjusting to a new life.

So, whether you’re preparing to go on vacation, taking a sabbatical, caring for an aging parent, or something else that’s temporary—if you can do more now, you won’t have as much to do later.

Speak up more Be honest with your boss, coworkers, spouse, or volunteer groups when you feel like your plate is too full—and come up with possible solutions. Don’t be afraid to raise your hand and ask for help, because I can guarantee they’ve been in your shoes before.

Prioritize everything Life balance isn’t about doing everything for an equal amount of time.

It’s about doing the right things at the right time. Everything in your life is not created equal.

Draw a pyramid, and rank all the important things in your life. Then give those people, events, and yourself importance by scheduling time for each (with whatever is at the top getting the most of your time). Your pyramid will shift and change based on your season of life, but establishing clear priorities will ultimately reduce your stress and make decision-making easier.

Say no I love this quote by Warren Buffet: “The difference between successful peo-

ple and really successful people is really successful people say no to almost everything.” It’s so true! Your time is limited. And, by the way, it’s yours. You don’t just have the right to say no, you have the responsibility. If you don’t protect your time, no one else will.

We could all use more help in this area. That’s why I created a free resource to help. 25 Ways to Protect Your Time is a script filled with different ways you can say no without feeling guilty. We could all use a little less guilt.

Be present where you are When you’re at your kid’s soccer game, be fully present. Don’t get distracted by thousands of other things.

When you’re at the office, do amazing work and be a team player. When you’re on a date with your loved one, give them your undivided attention.

Wherever you are, be there. This will help you feel like you’re truly giving all your priorities the love and attention they deserve. Try these five meth-

ods in your own life, and I bet you’ll be surprised at how achievable life balance truly is.

And remember, life balance is 100% personal. It’s going to look different for every person and every family, based on their priorities and season of life. That’s why it’s so important not to compare what your version of life balance looks like with someone else’s. That’s a freeing thought, isn’t it?

Get a Real ID now, spare headaches later

By State Rep. Paul Anderson The deadline to comply with new federal ID standards arrives later this year and Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, encourages people to sign up now and beat the rush.

Starting Oct. 1, every air traveler 18 years of age or older will need a Real ID, enhanced driver’s license or ID, passport or passport card, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States or enter federal facilities.

Reports show fewer than 10 percent of Minnesotans currently are compliant with the new ID standards and it is still taking several weeks for the state to turn around applications. Anderson said the pressures on turnaround time could intensify in coming months as more people get in line.

“There is still time to get a Real ID

by October, but I caution people against waiting until the last minute,” Anderson said. “With so many people still without a Real ID, you can expect backlogs to grow as the deadline approaches. A spike in applications could cause delays on its own, not to mention the headaches that any technical problems could cause – such as with the botched rollout of MNLARs for vehicle titles and registrations. Applying now could help us avoid issues later, especially where air travel is concerned.”

state ID card. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety website has information detailing the requirements and documents needed. DPS also has a pre-application online page to help speed up the process for processing an application for the Real ID. The federal Real ID program was created in the wake of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Congress raised ID standards in 2005, phased in over a number of years, with the stated goal of protecting our nation. While Minnesota’s current standard IDs do not meet the heightened federal standards, legislation enacted in 2017 allows the state to come into compliance this year.

National Birth Defects Prevention Month!

The Minnesota Department of Health is joining the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) to raise awareness of birth defects and to promote strategies that can reduce the risk of birth defects and their complications.

This year’s theme is “Best for You. Best for Baby.” Although not all birth defects can be prevented, the healthcare community can help all women who could become pregnant or are pregnant to lower their risk of having babies with birth defects. This includes encouraging them to follow some basic health guidelines throughout their reproductive years: • Be sure to take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day.

• Book a visit with your healthcare provider before stopping or starting any medicine.

• Become up-to-date with all vaccines, including the flu shot.

• Before you get pregnant, try to reach a healthy weight.

• Boost your health by avoiding harmful substances during pregnancy, such as alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

January is a perfect time to call additional attention to the importance of folic acid in preventing certain birth defects. The United States Public Health Service recommends that all women of childbearing age consume 400 micrograms (400mcg or .4mg) of folic acid daily to prevent up to 50 - 70% of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly.

State Fair and MN Farm Bureau Federation Accepting Century Farm Applications

Minnesota families who have owned their farms for 100 years or more are invited to apply for the 2020 Century Farm Program. Produced by the Minnesota State Fair in conjunction with the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, the Century Farm Program was created to promote agriculture and honor historic family farms in the state. More than 10,500 Minnesota farms have been honored since the program began in 1976.

Family farms are recognized as a Century Farm when three requirements are met. The farm must be: 1) at least 100 years old according to authentic land records; 2) in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years (continuous residence on the farm is not required); and 3) at least 50 acres and currently be involved in agricultural production.

A commemorative certificate signed by the State Fair Board of Managers President, Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation President Kevin Paap and Governor Tim Walz will be awarded to qualifying families, along with an outdoor sign signifying Century Farm status.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

January 12, 2020: The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and Sauk Centre Police Department conducted a search warrant at 611 Pine Street South in the City of Sauk Centre. The search warrant stemmed from the domestic assault incident which led to a several-hour standoff.

During the execution of the warrant, officers recovered a loaded handgun. Investigators also recovered a spent casing in the kitchen of the residence.

Further investigation revealed Ryan Kellen, 27, of Sauk Centre, shot at SWAT officers, who were approaching the residence inside an armored vehicle. Investigators determined the shot hit the armored vehicle in the area of the driver’s side door. The armored vehicle was occupied by multiple SWAT officers when it was fired upon. No officers were injured, and the suspect was taken into custody without injuries.

Members of the Stearns-Benton SWAT team and the St. Cloud SWAT team were used during the incident.

Mr. Kellen is being held at the Stearns County Jail pending formal charges from the Stearns County Attorney’s Office.

The armored vehicles were acquired by the respective agencies through a military surplus program that allows agencies to purchase them.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

January 10, 2020: At approximately 3:25 pm, their office received a report of a snowmobile accident on 30th Street, approximately 1.5 miles east of Upsala in Elmdale Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 62-year-old Donald Greiner of Hancock, MN was traveling along the snowmobile trail and then crossed over 30th Street where he lost control of his sled and was found unresponsive. Greiner was transported by Mayo Clinic Ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Upsala First Response Team, Upsala Fire Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

January 13, 2020: At approximately 3:30 pm, their office received a report of a one-vehicle rollover near the intersection of 450th Street and 130th Avenue, approximately three miles south of Bowlus, MN. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Alexis Kunstleben from Holdingford, MN was traveling west on 450th Street. Kunstleben lost control of her vehicle on the icy road, went into the ditch and rolled. She was transported to St. Gabriel’s Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Royalton Police Department, Bowlus Fire Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.
