Find happiness in your New Year -By Harvey Mackay

For many, the New Year is a chance for a new beginning, perhaps best represented by the baby and the old man, symbols of the new and old years since the time of the ancient Greeks.

The freshfaced cherub connotes so much promise. But so often, a few weeks into the new calendar, the good intentions and hopeful resolutions start to fade. Change is hard and old habits are stubborn. The future starts to look much more like the old man.

Could this year be different?

Yes. But only if you resolve to make the effort.

Consider the case of Gary Boone. As a young engineer at Texas Instruments in 1972, Boone came up with the idea for a full computer on a chip, later to be

called a microprocessor. He patented his invention, and eventually made enough noise to get a meeting with the top computer guru at TI. He explained his idea, only to be met with this response: “Young man, don’t you realize that computers are getting bigger, not smaller?”

Resistance to change like that can destroy companies. Gary Boone’s big dream changed the world.

Or how about the tale of two Steves: Jobs and Wozniak, that is. They tried to sell the idea of personal computers to their bosses at Atari and HewlettPackard. But their bosses weren’t interested. So they started Apple Computer.

Whether it’s a new job, a new business, a new whatever, you have to be committed to making changes that will bring about your desired outcome. And I will caution, sometimes big changes take a lot more than one year.

But if you don’t want this year to look like last year, the time to start is right now.

Start by taking charge of your life.

Not easy, but necessary if you want to make the new year your best year. You don’t have to do what you’ve always done or what everyone else expects from you. Think about what you really want to achieve and why. Then determine how you can make that happen.

Maybe it’s learning some new skills that translate to a new job. Maybe it’s formulating a business plan so you can finally be your own boss. Maybe it’s

working with a mentor to get inspiration or practical advice. Maybe it’s just giving yourself permission to take a risk.

Motivate yourself by identifying the benefits of change. Money is always a motivator, but there are other factors that are equally important: job satisfaction, personal growth, marketability, pride of ownership, peace of mind.

Once you decide what you want to do and why, the next logical step is to get started. Focus on one area at a time. Allow enough time to make real, sustainable progress. Change will not happen overnight. But as the pieces start to fit together, and you see actual progress, staying motivated will be much easier.

I mentioned working with a mentor, and I cannot emphasize how important that relationship is. Find industry organizations that match your goals and seek advice. Identify people in your network that can help you connect with their contacts. Share your dreams with people who will not only support you, but also challenge you and encourage you to keep working toward your heart’s desire.

Big changes often mean big risks.

What if what you thought you wanted doesn’t work out the way you thought it would? What if it works out even better?

No risk, no reward. Open yourself up to the possibilities. You might discover that you weren’t dreaming big enough.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cures and Substitutions

Personal health care was not always as convenient as it is today. If one had a serious medical problem, someone had to take the horse and try to find the doctor. He may be at his office or possibly at another patient’s home, assisting them with their health problem.

Early doctors commonly made house calls, which probably consumed a great deal of travel time. In today’s world we would think that this method was rather inefficient.

Due to the time and effort needed to contact a doctor, the rural families tried to treat their medical conditions themselves. They concocted many questionable medicines, some being passed down to them from their parents, some having the influence of the native Indians and some they must have dreamed up themselves. The large medicine manufacturers which are very common today didn’t exist in earlier days. Some of the medicines they made were actually based on plants and formulas common to the early settlers.

Aspirin, which is very common today comes from the inner bark of a willow. The bark was harvested, cut into smaller pieces and left to dry in the sun for a few hours, after which it was boiled and the liquid was either consumed as a tea or allowed to reduce in volume for easier storage. It was very difficult to control the dosage using this method.

Baking soda or salt took the place of modern day tooth paste.

If a child had a habit of sucking their thumb, tire patching glue on the thumb discouraged the habit.

If someone had an ear ache, 5 puffs of tobacco smoke blown into the ear would reduce the pain.

If someone had anemia, daily consumption of raw hamburger, weekly consumption of raw liver or occasional drinking of blood would build back the patients blood.

If someone had arthritis, drinking tea made from alfalfa seeds or daily consumption of 12 lite colored raisins soaked in Gin was said to help. A copper bracelet around the left wrist also created easier limb movement.

One that was really hard to believe

was a method for prevention of lockjaw.

If you step on a rusty nail, immediately step in a fresh cow pie and it will draw out the poison.

Cuts and abrasions should be treated with honey to promote healing and prevent infections. I remember these conditions to be treated with iodine solution.

Burns were cooled as fast as possible with some form of cooling solution. I was a witness to an accident where the fellow, naked to the waste, was splashed with hot grease when a large jar fell into a French fryer.

Potatoes were immediately crushed and placed directly on the burned area. The result was immediate pain relief with no scaring or blisters.

A sore throat was especially traumatic for kids. Not only did their throat hurt, but the cure may have been even worse. The cure was a teaspoon of sugar with kerosene added to it. It did make the sore throat get better, but everything you ate for the next week tasted like kerosene. Honey will also coat a sore throat.

A chest cold was originally treated with a mustard plaster. The mustard was warmed in water, placed on a piece of flannel and put on the patients chest.

The pain caused to the skin made the patient forget about the cold for a while.

In later years, Vicks rubbed directly on the neck and chest, covered by a cloth was the accepted solution. Vicks on the throat also helps to reduce the urge to cough.

Preparation H was used daily to help eliminate facial wrinkles.

Poison ivy causes an itchy rash. This rash could be treated by boiling spotted elder bark and putting the liquid on the rash. The skin is temporarily stained brown, but the rash disappears. Crushed jewel weed rubbed on the rash will make it go away. Fels Naptha soap made into a paste, rubbed on the rash and allowed to dry will also solve the problem.

There are many more home remedies and I know that I will be getting some calls from readers about their early experiences.

Obituaries Daniel M. “Dan” Welle Daniel M. “Dan” Welle, age 85, of Sauk Centre, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 12 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Tim Wenzel and Deacon Lawrence Kaas officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Dan was born to Leo and Barbara (Lehner) Welle on September 10, 1931 in Albany, Minnesota. He graduated from Albany High School and attended St. Cloud State University for one year. Dan was honorably discharged having served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Dan married Arlene Adrian on June 28, 1952 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Albany, where Dan worked in the family car dealership. In 1964 Dan and Arlene purchased the Otto Brothers Dodge dealership in Sauk Centre, where they resided and raised their five children.

In 1989 he opened Dan Welle Southtown, a new facility on the south side of Sauk Centre. He served on the Chrysler Dealer Council and was named a Pentastar award winning dealership multiple times.

stock of how far you’ve come. If a journal or chart would make it more tangible, go for it. As the saying goes, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Do one thing every day that will get you closer to your goal. Even if it’s just reading an article or signing up for a class, be persistent. Developing habits like this are central to making changes that stick. It keeps you focused on the prize. It also sets you up to succeed beyond your goals, because you know what is required for the next big thing.

January 1 may have come and gone, but don’t wait another year to get going on your dream. A happy new year can start today!

Dan and Arlene enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and traveled extensively. He had hiked the Grand Canyon and was a certified scuba diver. He also enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble.

Dan’s family was the most cherished thing in his life; he was the happiest when he was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Arlene Welle of Sauk Centre; four children, Bruce (Mickey) Welle of Sauk Centre, Joan (Lowell) Jenc of Alexandria, Brad (Sue) Welle of Roseville, and Brent Welle of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter-inlaw, Gail Welle of Fergus Falls; twelve grandchildren, Aaron (Alani) Welle, Jared Welle, Chrissy (Kris) Hokanson, Becky (Paul) Winters, Beth (Ira) Bradford, Lindsay (Nick) Cox, Jordan Welle, B.J. Welle, Ben Jenc, Andy Jenc, Lauren Welle, and Megan Welle; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Deel Hoffman, Marian Hohman, and Macky Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian Welle on February 10, 2007; brothers and sisters, Roman Welle, John Welle, Evelyn Welle, Leona Ahles, Sylvester Welle, and Ervin Welle.

Obituaries Virginia E. Thompson

Virginia E. Thompson, 91 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Riverside Assisted Living in Royalton, MN. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN with Pastor CJ Boettcher officiating. Burial will take place in Gethsemane Lutheran Cemetery in Upsala, MN. A visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 A.M. on Thursday at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN. Arrangements are with Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Virginia Ethel (Johnson) Thompson was born on October 14, 1925 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County to the late Otto and Ethel (Anderson) Johnson, Jr. She grew up in the Upsala area. Virginia was confirmed at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala in 1939, where she was a lifetime member. Virginia attended Upsala Area Schools. She married Russell Thompson on March 27, 1943 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Parsonage in Upsala, MN. Russell and Virginia lived on Russell’s family farm, where they raised their two children, Wesley and Beverly. In 1976, Russell and Virginia sold the farm to their daughter and son-in-law and moved to an apartment in Little Falls, returning to Valley View Apartments in Upsala in 1979. Virginia worked at Munsingwear

Alcuin J. “Al” Gangl in Little Falls for 21 years and then at the Upsala Schools for 5 years under the Green Thumb Program. Virginia married Edmund Nelson on October 12, 1991.

Following Ed’s death, Virginia moved to Riverside Assisted Living in Royalton, where she resided until the time of her death. Virginia loved cooking, baking, crocheting, playing cards, playing bingo with her friends at Riverside Assisted Living and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren were her true pride and joy.

Virginia was also a life long member of the Upsala American Legion Auxiliary Post #350.

Alcuin J. “Al” Gangl, age 90 of Melrose, died Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 9 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Alcuin Joseph Gangl was born March 19, 1926 in St. Francis, Minnesota to Michael and Hilda (Eiynck) Gangl.

He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in October of 1944. On June 20, 1951 he was united in marriage to Lorraine Vogel at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Al worked as a machinist at American Hoist in St. Paul and for Flour City in Minneapolis for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, American Legion Post 101, lifetime

member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Lodge #459, and was a generous blood donor. Al enjoyed fishing and hunting, and doing yardwork, especially getting rid of the dandelions. Al was also known for being the community window cleaner in Melrose.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Lorraine Gangl of Melrose; children, Joleen (Mark) Schindeldecker of St. Paul Park, Ron (Sandi) Gangl of Buffalo, Shari Gangl (Russ Carlson) of St. Paul, and Amy Proell of Mounds View; seven grandchildren, John, Shannon, Mary Beth, Rebecca, Dan, Russell, and Kayla; seven great-grandchildren, Anthony, Deseree, Aaron, David Jr., Brooke, Emma, Meta, and Lilian; brother, Elmer Gangl of Melrose; and sisters, Marti (Roger) Doetkott of Melrose, Ida Finken of Melrose, and Luella (Jim) Noren of St. Paul.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Sally, Dan, Don, Melvin, Issy, Hannah, Herman, Angie, Fron, and Loretta.

Serving as urn bearer was Ron Gangl.

Cross bearer was Marti Doetkott and scripture bearer was Drew Templeton.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Prairie for Kenneth A. Lindstrom, age 95, of Long Prairie who passed away on Sunday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Rev. Marty Porter will officiate and burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in the spring.

Family and friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Kenneth Alvin Lindstrom was born January 20, 1921 in Reynolds Township, Todd County, Minnesota, the son of Oscar and Esther (Larson) Lindstrom.

He grew up in Reynolds Township on the family farm. He graduated from Long Prairie High School. After high school, he farmed with his father and later became a butter maker at the Reynolds Creamery in Gutches Grove. He married Alma S. Duda on June 10, 1952 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. In 1957, the family moved into Long Prairie and Kenneth worked as a custodian at the Long Prairie School. He retired in 1983.

He then worked part-time at Hart Press for several years.

Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Ardis (Dennis) Jessop, Maple Grove; son, Keith Lindstrom, St. Paul; grandchildren, Dustin (Paula) Jessop and Aaron (Candice) Jessop; and greatgrandchildren, Dominic, Atticus, and Dawson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alma on January 1, 2017, and two sisters, Viola and Vivian.

Lucia Catherine Meyer Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, January 10th at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph for Lucia Catherine Meyer, age 102, of Avon, who died on Thursday at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Lucia was born July 11, 1914 in Minot, ND to Peter and Margaret (Frost) Holbach. She married Jerome Meyer on August 27th, 1940 in Minot, ND. Lucia met her future husband Jerome, when he was working in Minot, ND. They moved back to Central Minnesota and lived in Waite Park many years. They moved to Avon in 1974. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and did volunteer work for the Wetterling Foundation.

Larry was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Moose Lake and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. He played the concertina and enjoyed old time music.

Larry is survived by his sister, Lorie (Wally) Miller of Long Prairie; nieces, Leslie (Ryan) Jobe, Jodi (Mike Smith) Miller, Lisa (Zachary) Hewitt, and Jenna Miller; and grand niece, Alivia.

A Success Funny

There once was a rich man who was near death. He was very grieved because he had worked so hard for his money and he wanted to be able to take it with him to heaven. So he began to pray that he might be able to take some of his wealth with him.

An angel hears his plea and appears to him, “Sorry, but you can’t take your wealth with you.”

The man implores the angel to speak to God to see if He might bend the rules.

The man continues to pray that his wealth could follow him. The angel reappears and informs the man that God has decided to allow him to take one suitcase with him. Overjoyed, the man gathers his largest suitcase and fills it with pure gold bars and places it beside his bed.

Soon afterward the man dies and shows up at the Gates of Heaven to greet St. Peter. Seeing the suitcase Peter says, “Hold on, you can’t bring that in here!”

But the man explains to him that he has permission and asks him to verify his story with the Lord. Sure enough, Peter checks and comes back saying, “You’re right. You are allowed one carry-on bag, but I’m supposed to check its contents before letting it through.”

Peter opens the suitcase to inspect the worldly items that the man found too precious to leave behind and exclaims, “You brought pavement?!?!”

Swanville High School ExCel Award Nominees Juniors Katelyn Nohner and Lawrence Mettler have been selected as this year’s Swanville High School ExCel nominees.

The ExCel award which stands for excellence in community, education and leadership, is a recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and are model citizens. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one female and one male for the ExCel award.

Nominees must be a junior in high school, make satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in a MSHSL fine arts or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in their school and volunteer in their community.

Katelyn Nohner, daughter of Joei Klemish and Bobby Nohner, has participated in band, including marching band and pep band, fall play, softball and is a manager for volleyball and basketball. She is also active on the student council and is a class officer. Katelyn is consistently on the honor roll as well. She spends time

Lawrence Mettler, son of Randy and Margaret Mettler, has participated in band, including marching band and pep band, fall play, speech, football, basketball and track and field.

Democrats who created Obamacare disaster block $300 million in relief to provide aid for skyrocketing premiums, continuity of care, reforms House Republicans wasted no time getting to work on key session priorities, including health care and tax relief. House File 2, which will result in $21.7 million in tax relief for 220,000 Minnesota tax filers by conforming Minnesota’s tax code to the federal tax code, passed last Thursday on a vote of 130-0.

Republicans also moved to declare an urgency and pass The 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access bill, HF1, which would have provided premium relief, extended access to doctors for continuity of care, and begun to reform the individual market. Democrats blocked the measure, despite agreeing days earlier to suspend the rules in order to expedite premium relief for Minnesotans.

“Republicans were ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work on top priorities for Minnesota families in week one,” said House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown.

“While I’m pleased we were able to pass $22 million in tax relief that will mean more money in the pockets of 220,000 Minnesota tax filers, it’s incredibly disappointing that Democrats would block emergency aid for those struggling with the health care crisis. The same Democrats responsible for Obamacare are now blocking relief from the mess they created. They have had this language for days, agreed to

suspend the rules, and today went back on their word and the result is Minnesotans will have to wait even longer for premium relief, continued access to their doctors, and first-steps toward reform for the individual market.”

Without quick approval of Rep. Greg Davids’ federal tax conformity bill (HF2), Minnesotans who file their taxes early could face higher tax bills, a situation all lawmakers wanted to avoid. Davids was told by the Department of Revenue that in order to avoid tax filing complications, the proposal needs to be signed into law before January 11. The Senate is expected to pass tax conformity in time to meet the January 11th deadline.

2017 Legislative Session Underway The new legislative session opened on Tuesday of last week, and the day was marked with ceremony as members took the oath of office to uphold both the state and federal constitutions.

It’s an especially big day for new members, as they had family and friends on hand to witness the pageantry. It was right to work and just two days later, on Thursday, the House passed legislation to conform with the federal tax code. This may be the earliest this type of bill has been done, and it allows tax preparers to get their software updated in a timely fashion so early-filers won’t have to go back and re-file. It’s expected the Senate will act on the same conformity bill this week and, if all goes well, it should be on Gov. Mark Dayton’s desk by the end of the week.

Another major bill was taken up by the House last week, but its fate wasn’t as successful as the tax conformity bill.

It was officially called the 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access Act. Now, to act on legislation that hasn’t gone through the formal committee process, an emergency must be declared and suspension of the rules must be approved by at least 90 members of the body in order to immediately take up a floor vote.

The DFL members were concerned about taking the bill through so urgently, and were also more supportive of legislation proposed by the governor. As a result, the vote to suspend the rules and act on the bill did not get the required number of votes to pass.

The bill supported by the Republicans also provided state funding to help those hit with huge premium increases this year. But it also did more such as provide for continuity of care, which would help those on the individual market and who are currently receiving care for an acute condition to continue receiving that care. Someone taking cancer treatments at Mayo, for example, who has seen that facility no longer part of his or her network could be helped by this provision.

There were other good provisions that start the process of making the system better, such as “stop loss” requirements for small business, allowing for-profit HMOs to operate in Minnesota, along with provisions pertaining to surprise billing, and insurance market options.

The Dayton-backed bill did none of these things; it only provided funding to help with premium increases. We all know that is a one-time Band-Aid and doesn’t do anything to address the overriding problem. Our bill will now start the committee process and be back on the House floor for action in the coming weeks. We need to take action on this situation as the enrollment period ends shortly and these higher premiums take effect.

Sympathies to the family of Sylvester Uphus, a former state legislator who passed away last week at the age of 89.

Sylvester served in the Minnesota House for ten years, from 1983 to 1992. A family man and also a people person, Sylvester’s life was marked by service to others.

He was a World War II veteran, a farmer, and a township officer. And, following his service to the state, he worked for ten years as an overseas agricultural consultant.

Sylvester was also a mentor to me when I decided to run for office eight years ago. He and I drove around the area, and we talked about politics and stopped to visit folks. Sylvester would introduce me to people, and I remember thinking that he must know everybody! Blest be his memory.

Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, and Dennis Westrich; Absent: Olson.

People present: Council Elect Lana Bartells, Great River Regional Library Branch Services Coordinator for Upsala Wanda Erickson, MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, City Engineer Scott Hedlund, Public Works Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Oaths of Office: Stevens swore in Dennis Westrich as four-year term Council Member for 20172020 and presented him with a Certificate of Election.

Stevens swore in Lana Bartells as four-year term Council Member for 2017-2020 and presented her with a Certificate of Election.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Wanda Erickson, the Great River Regional Library Branch Service Coordinator for Upsala presented the “Minnesota Loves Libraries” statewide effort sponsored by the Council of Regional Public Library System Administrators to gather stories from library users to be presented to the legislators on Minnesota Library Legislative Day in March at the State Capitol.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Koopmeiners stated that the leak at the Rec Building is temporarily fixed until it can be accessed this summer.

The pump on the lift station is be scheduled to be repaired.

The air compressor at the water plant has been repaired.

The part for the sander on the City’s plow truck is not in yet.

Fire Department Report: No meeting was held last month.

The department was called out

to a house fire on the 2nd of January. Officers will be recommended at the next City Council meeting.

Rescue Squad: Larry Bartells updated the council on trainings.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the January Calendar.

Stevens discussed the internship program through NJPA and Region 5; informing the council of the two interns for the next two semesters. The first semester inter will be Eli Stevens, the summer semester intern will be Alex Determan.

Stevens reported on the petty cash for the quarter.

Planning Commission: The Commissioners discussed Ordinance 2017-1, and also asked Dan to draw new plans with a goal to have them by January City Council Meeting.

Their next meeting is Wednesday, January 18th at City Hall.

UCDC No meeting was held.

The next meeting is January 17th at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Public Hearing: Franchise Fee Ordinance 2017-1 Mayor Johnson recessed the regular City Council meeting and called to order the Public Hearing on Franchise Fee Ordinance 20171; an ordinance that would add a $5.00 fee on to each resident’s Minnesota Power Utility bill.

No Comments were heard.

FEMA, Flood Risk Map for Morrison County: There will be a meeting on January 11 from 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. to discuss the Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning for Morrison County. Mayor Johnson stated he plans to attend the meeting.

Performance Review: Lange moved to schedule performance reviews for 7:00 p.m. on January 12 , 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Dear Dave, My wife and I are debt-free, plus she has a business giving music lessons.

We formed an LLC last year when she had several students and was making over $3,000 a month, but that all changed when our first baby arrived. Now, she has only a few students, and they bring in around $700 per month. Should we dissolve the LLC?

-Ben Dear Ben, First, congratulations on being debtfree and new parents. Happy New Year to you all!

In most states, the only upfront cost for an LLC is the money you pay for the initial set up. There may be a small fee for a business license and subsequent annual renewal, but that generally doesn’t add up to much. Then, there’s the money you pay for filing your tax return on the LLC once a year. Even if you live in a state where there are other fees to consider, as long as the cost of maintaining the LLC wasn’t killing you, I’d recommend keeping it in place. You went to the trouble of opening it, and you just might use it again someday.

Even if your wife is staying home with the baby, she just might be able to take on more students again as time goes by.

Just be reasonable and use common sense. If you spend $3,000 to stay open, and you’re making $700, you’d dissolve it, right? But as long as you don’t have fees that are making you cringe, I’d probably leave it in place.

-Dave Dear Dave, My dad has been really bad with money his entire life. Anytime he would get into trouble, my grandparents would always bail him out. This time he came to my wife and I, asking for $350 to get out of overdraft at the bank. We’re trying to live on a budget and get control of our finances, and $350 would make things kind of tight at the moment. What do you think we should do?

-Jeremy Dear Jeremy, I understand feeling an obligation to help your dad. But there’s a lesson here that dad needs to learn, and it’s something that goes much deeper than the money or helping out a family member.

You have to do the right thing, no matter how dad reacts to this. Right now, the right thing is taking care of your family and not putting them in jeopardy. So my answer to dad would be

no. Another thing that needs to happen is for the definition of “help” to change.

When you say he’s been irresponsible with money his whole life, giving him $350 won’t help — and it will make you an enabler. Just handing him $350 will actually hurt him, and it will give him the idea he can continue being dumb with money and hit you up for cash anytime.

Like I said, I understand the pull of helping out a parent. So if you feel this is something you absolutely must do, I would advise making the $350 contingent on the fact that he begin and complete a financial counseling course. Be gentle when you talk to him, and let him know it hurts to see him struggling. But let him know, too, it’s his responsibility to work through his debts and take care of his own finances!

January 4, 2017: At 23:49 TCSO received a call of a car deer accident that occurred on County 59 west of 281st Ave. in Round Prairie TWP Sect 11. 38 year old Robert Miron, rural Grey Eagle, was traveling eastbound on County 59 when he struck a deer in the traffic lane. Robert was not injured. His 2008 Chevrolet truck received moderate damage to the front passenger side.

I think if we are honest, we would all agree that being a straightforward person is a quality to be appreciated. Even though, as it seems, those poor souls are the ones that get the most ridicule apparently because of their not always tactful honesty. So, even though we appreciate them, do we want to be like them?

It may seem like a crazy question, but I have been struggling over all of the watered down versions of what we want to call truth. I do not believe that is what people really want. I would like to think that most human beings still desire the undefiled truth in any given story or relationship.

We lose friendships and even family relationships are broken because of the lack of being straightforward with the people that we care about the most.

Usually because of the fear of telling them the whole truth- which is quite ironic if you think about it. I would rather know that a friend has been honest with me about any given issue, than find out later that they were not- even if it was to spare me the honest truth that sometimes hurts. That is what a true friend does. I am thankful to have had and still have many in my life! Some will greet me when I get to the promised land some day! And oh how I look forward to seeing them again!

Each New Year is invariably filled with great conversations about how we are contemplating making changes in our lives. Eating healthier, exercising more often, budgeting differently, or perhaps simply making better choices in certain areas. After all, self examination is the best place to begin, whether physically, financially, or spiritually.

Being straightforward actually originates from an honest heart check. Although this approach seems to be lost in our world today, I believe that if we would make a resolution to start here, we would witness many positive results!

We would see transformed relationships in family, friends, and beyond!

It is extremely unfortunate that we cannot trust the media for example.

But how much more unfortunate if we cannot trust friends or family or if they cannot trust us? We must practice good judgement in all areas, and use a moral compass for examining what is good and true and what is not. We would be quite foolish to just believe what we hear without question. in our gut telling us that something is not quite right, we should take heed to that prod.

Choosing honesty and integrity is the best place to start. It is a path that will not look easy- in fact the Bible calls it the ‘narrow path.’ And ‘few travel on that road.’

Joshua took over Moses’ leadership in getting the Israelites to the Promised Land. They had already spent 40 years in the desert. They were not a compliant group of people. In fact, they were a large group of disobedient grumblers to say the least which was the reason it took them 40 years to get to where they were going when it should have taken about 6 weeks. They disobeyed God and did not walk in His ways as they were commanded to do even after seeing many firsthand miracles!

The Lord told Joshua to walk ‘straightforward’ and be careful to obey all of the law from Moses. ‘Do not turn from it to the right or to the left.’ That could not have been an easy assignment!

The Lord told him that if he obeyed His law and was careful to do everything written in it, he would be successful and prosperous.

Why would we not want to follow his example as we travel through our ‘desert’ this year that lies ahead of us?

Why would we not embrace the challenge and the joyful expectations of what this New Year has for us if we would simply follow the path that the Lord has set out before us? Obedience will bring blessing. Disobedience will show us more years wandering in the desert looking for the promised land with blinders on. Our choice. Choose the narrow path and live.

Proverbs 3:6~ ‘In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.’

By Patricia Seifert We have had an election, an Electoral College vote and soon an inauguration.

We keep hearing that the Electoral College should be dumped in favor of the popular vote results. On one hand that sounds great. However, I have a couple issues with that idea.

A straight popular vote winner means that the mob rules the country.

In this last election, the bulk of the mob would be living in California and the North Eastern part of the country.

Take a moment to think about how State wide candidates such as Senator or Governor campaign in MN. Do they come to Alexandria, St. Cloud, Little

Falls, Wadena or Fergus Falls for more than a brief stop maybe once during the campaign? Now apply that type of campaigning to the Presidential race.

The candidates would concentrate on the east coast, west coast, Texas and maybe Chicago and/or Detroit.

The Electoral College makes the Presidential candidates campaign in the middle of the country. We have the popular vote within each State. Each State assigns their electoral votes according to the results within the State, thus all States are important to the Electoral College total.

Maybe the Electoral College is not so bad after all.

A 14th Letter to America

By Manuel Ybarra, Jr. The year 2017 gives America a chance for change. We have gone astray and so has the world. We must try to return to God and seek His righteous guidance. That guidance is in God’s Word, The Word of God. It has not and will not change.

The Pilgrims on the Mayflower knew His Word and their pact was to Glorify God in their new endeavor.

They considered America, like a second promise land, given to Man by God. And they were probably well acquainted with God’s command to Joshua, “to be strong and very courageous,” and “to observe to do according to all the laws.”

Joshua was also instructed by God not to turn to the right, nor to the left, from His Laws.

But for several decades, America has been turning right and left, like on a mountain road. God’s Commandments are no longer followed by judges in their decisions. They have forgotten that it is the Righteous Judge,

America is definitely spiritually blind. Probably under condemnation from God as some are saying. “Thou shall not kill,” says God. And, “Thou shall not have any other God.”
