I learned years ago that one of the most powerful things you can do to have influence with others is to smile at them. Never underestimate the value of a smile. The person who is smart enough to keep smiling usually winds up with something good enough to smile about.

People all over the world smile in the same language. A smile should be standard equipment for all people, both at work and at home. It takes only 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown – so really, you have no excuse. Put on a happy face!

Smiling adds face value and helps you make a good impression. We like people who smile, because they appear warm and kind. They are more approachable.

Smiling encourages trust. People who are constantly smiling appear to be more trustful than those who are not.

People who smile are more productive. A 2010 study by Andrew Oswald, a professor of economics at Warwick Business School over in England, proved that employees who smile more often are significantly more productive and creative in the workplace.

Smiling makes you more creative.

A 2013 study from the University of California, San Francisco, explored this connection in men and found that those who were happier had a more comprehensive approach to problems, improving their ability to think of more solutions than their negativeminded counterparts. The researchers connected this finding to the release of dopamine triggered by happiness, since the neurotransmitter is involved in learning, processing and decisionmaking.

Smiling enhances your disposition.

The more you smile, the happier you are. And don’t forget that the more you smile, the happier other people around you feel.

Smiling makes you more attractive.

A smile is a very inexpensive way to improve your looks. People are naturally attracted to people who smile.

Smiling improves health. Studies have proven that when people smile, endorphins are released making people feel happy and less stressed. The more you smile, the happier and more relaxed you get. Surprisingly, this also works when faking a smile or laugh, as the Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Christmas Past

We spent several weeks involved in frantic preparation for the Christmas Holiday.

We brought a tree into the house, carried the boxes of decorations out of storage and placed them at the appropriate locations. Family gatherings create stress, since the family members have other obligations.

Food and treat items needed preparation.

Appropriate gift purchases must be made. Wow!! No wonder some of us more mature citizens feel that going to bed early on New Years Eve is more fun than watching the ball to drop in New York. Ya, things do change through the years.

Now we are repacking and storing the decorations. One of my memories as a child, was taking the tinsel off of the tree. It needed to be removed one piece at a time and carefully placed over a piece of cardboard and stored in a box, so that it would be ready for use next year. I really feel that there was very little economic value from this job, but it did occupy me for several hours. I guess that was the idea of saving tinsel. The decorations themselves were usually very fragile, so they were removed by a responsible adult.

The tree itself brings back memories of early Christmases. One of my grandfathers waited until a couple of days before Christmas to buy a tree.

This definitely reduced the selection, but also greatly reduced the price of the tree. Kind of a win-win situation. This usually resulted in a “Charlie Brown” tree, which was part of the family tradition.

A food memory that comes to mind is something that was called “huck-fet”. I’m sure there are few who still remember that sandwich spread.

Today’s food police would definitely “bonk” that Christmas treat. It was made from the fat skin of a goose. The skin was carefully washed and run through a meat grinder, after which salt, pepper, marjoram and a little bit of onion were added. This uncooked mixture was then refrigerated for a day, after which it was spread on homemade bread. To some it may sound really ugly tasting, but it was really something we all looked forward to. In later years the goose was replaced with cooked chicken meat with the same spice mixture with a bit of chicken broth added to create proper moisture. That is pretty good too.

Remember the Christmas program at church, when each child had to stand in front of the whole congregation and say their piece? You had to memorize HOME OF PIONEER FEEDS

a couple of lines from the Christmas story and say it in front of all those people. Your stomach felt like it does when some monster is about to attack you, your legs felt shaky and you were certain that some key words would be forgotten. This feeling developed during the week before Christmas Eve. You actually wanted a big snow-fall, so noone would get to church. Oh well, we lived through it.

Christmas vacation from school - We were anticipating this time since Thanksgiving. Oh boy, now we don’t go to school, so we can help clean steer, pig, chicken and cow barns. We can grind feed and spend the mornings with Dad cutting firewood. Yes, it was lots of fun, but when school started again in January, we were eager to go back.

Guess we were not as ambitious and productive as we told our kids.

Endorphins also act as natural pain killers. The added oxygen from smiling and laughing benefits your body while improving your immune system.

Smiling releases more white blood cells, which protect the body against infectious diseases.

In a 2012 study published in the journal Psychological Science, University of Kansas psychological scientists Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman studied 170 participants who were told to hold chopsticks in their mouths in three formations, making them smile to various degrees without realizing it, after performing a stressful task. The experiment revealed that subjects who smiled the biggest with the chopsticks experienced a substantial reduction in heart rate and quicker stress recovery

Obituaries Helen T. Veeder

Helen T. Veeder, age 69, of Atwater and formerly of Sauk Centre, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Rice M e m o r i a l Hospital in W i l l m a r , Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 12 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Deacon Lawrence Kaas officiating.

Inurnment will follow in the Saint Paul’s Cemetery.

Helen Theresa Veeder was born November 29, 1948 in Melrose, Minnesota to Richard and Beatrice (Lindemann) Veeder. She lived at the Presbyterian Family Foundation/Divine House in Atwater since 1976. Helen worked at West Central Industries in Willmar from 1980 to 2014 and currently

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 8, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Leander B. Notch, 82, of Avon who passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 4, 2018.

Rev. Gregory Miller, OSB officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Williams Dingmann Funeral Home, Avon.

Leander was born January 24, 1935 in St. Joseph to Henry and Josephine (Forner) Notch. He married Kathleen Tadych on October 24, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. Following their marriage, the couple farmed dairy cattle and later beef cattle. Eventually, Leander followed his true passion in carpentry and was self-employed. He constructed the family home 25 years ago using the trees

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Gwen Veeder of Sauk Centre; six nieces and nephews, John Veeder (friend, Amy Bertram) of Sauk Centre, Pam Thompson of St. Cloud, Kathy Spencer of Wausau, Wisconsin, Tammie (Paul) Froland of St. Cloud, Cindy Veeder of St. Cloud, and George “Shorty” Veeder of Brooklyn Center.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George and Richard Veeder; sister-in-law, Arlene Veeder; and nieces, Kimberly Vearrier and Jacqueline Smith.

Serving as urn bearer will be Tammie Froland. Cross bearer will be John Veeder and scripture bearer will be Cindy Veeder.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and living off the beautiful land God created. Leander taught his great grandchildren how to collect maple syrup.

He was a woodsman, craftsman, Jack of all trades, but most importantly loving, tough, and disciplined. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Zachariah A. “Zack” BerlienWensman, age 32 of New Munich, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 4, 2018 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, January 13 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m.

John G. “Johnnie” Stoermann John G. “Johnnie” Stoermann, age 85 of St. Rosa, died peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, January 12 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Roger Botz, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in St. Rosa. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. from the St. Rosa Lions and the Grey Eagle Knights of Columbus Thursday evening.

John Gerhard Stoermann was born October 10, 1932 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Gerhard and Katherine (Hoppe) Stoermann. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957 on

the USS Gurke and the USS Shields Destroyers. He was united in marriage to Lori Finken on June 13, 1960 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Johnnie received a Boiler Chief License and worked at Kraft Foods in Melrose for 30 years. He also worked at the Melrose Telephone Company for many years as a welder. Johnnie was Mayor of the City of St. Rosa from 1999 to 2010. He enjoyed golfing, reading, woodworking, and metalworking.

He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rosa Lions, Monsignor Lorsung Council #14616 Knights of Columbus, and SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his family, Lori Wolf, Mark (Joy) Stoermann, Judy (Dale) Dirkes, Mary (Doug) Briggs, Fay Stoermann, Gail (Christian) Sack, 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren with one due in February, brother and sisters, Irene Pundsack, Rose Pundsack, and Robert Stoermann.

Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters, Julitta Austing, Rogaria Austing, Bernard Stoermann, Linus Stoermann, and Boniface Stoermann.

He had a strong spirituality and attended the Church Upon the Rock church in Mounds View and other churches in the metro. Zack loved music, especially rap.

His favorites were Eminem and Yelawolf.

Zack enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, reading, and was a dog lover. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his father, Robin and Tena Wensman of Sauk Centre; mother, Kelly Berlien of Vadnais Heights; brothers, Nathan Amiel Berlien, Justin Tobias Berlien, and Zane Robinson Wensman; grandmother, Mary Ann Wensman of Greenwald; and many aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.

Zack was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Laurie Bakey, and Denis Wensman; and cousin, Addison Lee Wensman.

Donna M. Hinnenkamp Memorial Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Donna M. Hinnenkamp, 86, originally of St. Rosa will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Clearwater.

Donna passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Reverend Dennis Backer will officiate.

Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Richard Schiller, age 91 of Albany will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 13 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, burial will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.

Richard died Tuesday, January 9, 2017 at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. There will be a visitation after 12:30 PM until the time of service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Richard was born July 27, 1926 in Albany Township to Charles and Rose (Wenning) Schiller. He married Bertha Heinze on April 8, 1961 in St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Elrosa. The couple

She loved the Lord, and loved serving people. She loved creating, through painting, decorating for parties and events, and creative cooking. She worked as an advocate for the unborn since before Roe vs. Wade, and was a charter member of the first Birthline chapter in Minneapolis.

She was married to Art in 1950, the love of her life, and he preceded her in death by six days.

Donna is survived by her children, Ken of Florida, Bob (Deb) of Excelsior, Lea (Jeff) Gallagher of Sartell, Jeff of Otsego, Eileen Taniguchi of Texas; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Patty) Thielen of Texas; and sister, Bernice (Jerry) DeMarre of Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Richard Thielen.

Richard is survived by his wife, Bertha, Albany; his children, Paula (Douglas) Umbehocker, Mound and Donald (Sian) Schiller, Sauk Rapids. He is also survived by his sister, Olive Meller, Albany and sister-in-law, Rita Schiller, Albany.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his children, Karen Schiller and Peter Schiller; his brother, Harlin Schiller, and brother-in-law, Ralph Meller.

tion was offered. Over the next several months, a Proposal for the Restoration of St. Mary’s Church was prepared and presented to the Diocesan Building Council for consideration. The plan was rejected by the council and the bishop, on the grounds that restoration would not conform to the “mandates” of the Second Vatican Council.

In early June, a group of parishioners formed a nonprofit corporation, Friends to Restore St. Mary’s Church, to oppose the building of a new campus and to promote the restoration of historic St. Mary’s Church. The nonprofit corporation is fully registered with the state of Minnesota, and all contributions to it are tax deductible. The corporation has hired an attorney with experience in litigation of historical landmarks and hopes to restore St. Mary’s to its former grandeur. The matter is currently in litigation.

Friends to Restore St. Mary’s is dedicated to the restoration of this significant landmark and all that it symbolizes: the preservation of a unique culture that stands in danger of disappearing.

Friends to Restore St. Mary’s Church

By Jesse Lovelace On March 11, 2016, the Catholic Church of St. Mary’s in Melrose was badly damaged by a fire that was apparently started in the north sacristy on the western end of the building in the late afternoon. Several local fire departments were called and remained on the scene well into the next morning. The damage was extensive: the original high altar was completely destroyed, and there was major damage to the side altars. The organ in the balcony on the east end of the church was completely destroyed. There was some water damage to the pews, but surprisingly the original stained glass windows were untouched, even the giant rose window just adjacent to the completely destroyed organ.

St. Mary’s Church was originally named St. Boniface Church and was built mostly by hand in 1898 by German Catholic immigrants who wanted their own church separate from St. Patrick’s Church, founded by Irish railroad workers. The two parishes eventually merged in 1958, becoming St. Mary’s Church.

In 1993, St. Mary’s Church was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places, along with seven other Catholic churches in Stearns County.

After the fire, which was later called an arsonist’s work by the state fire marshal, Bishop Donald Kettler was recorded on video as saying that restoration would begin as soon as possible. Several meetings were held, and the parishioners’ opinions were heard.

Months went by. In January 2017, a parish meeting was held in which a “liturgical consultant” was introduced to discuss various options available but no information was given and no explana-

Lundeen participates in many activities including basketball, softball, volleyball, knowledge bowl, pep band, and student council.

Outside of school she enjoys spending time with family and friends. In the summertime, she enjoys swimming, traveling, and camping.

After high school, Lundeen plans to attend college for a major in Sports Medicine. She would like to be a Sports Medicine doctor for athletes.

After high school, Douvier plans to attend college and enter a profession.

-Katherine Dear Katherine, Renting to family can work out just fine, as long as there are clearly understood rules and boundaries in place ahead of time. Both parties should understand there must be a landlord and tenant relationship with regards to all aspects of the rental agreement.

Tenants have the right to expect a landlord to make needed repairs promptly, pay the taxes and insurance on a property on time, and do all the other things a landlord should do as outlined in the rental agreement. As a landlord, you have the right to expect the rent to be paid early or on time, and for the tenant to respect the property and guidelines in the rental agreement.

A landlord also has the right to evict a tenant through fair, legal process if they violate the terms of the agreement.

When it comes to these business dealings, you’re wearing the landlord cap, and they’re wearing the renter’s cap. At Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other family events, the caps come off and you’re family. But you don’t get to play the cousin card as a way to keep from paying rent, and you don’t get to Upsala, MN

January 5, 2018: At at approximately 6:18 a.m., the Stearns County Communications Center received the call of a vehicle fire just north of 17 St. N. on 30 AVE. N, in Le Sauk Township. Joseph Sowada, 48, of Albany was driving a 2001 White Dodge Caravan when the vehicle backfired multiple times then began smoking. Upon stopping to check the engine, Sowada noticed a small engine fire which quickly grew in size. Sowada was the only occupant of the vehicle and was uninjured. The fire caused 30 Ave. N to be shut down for approximately an hour and a half. The Sartell Fire Department was on scene to extinguish the fire.

The vehicle was a total loss.

Swanville City December 5, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Mayor Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej.

Also present: Angie and Brett VanRissegham, Cory and John DeFoe, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held November 7, 2017 was reviewed. A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes as printed. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Angie VanRissegham, from Swanville Insurance, was present to go over the City’s 2018 replacement costs on city buildings insurance renewal policy. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to increase the city garage value to $212,000.00 and leave all other replacement costs as is. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Cory and John DeFoe were present to agree to the offer of $7500.00 for the land on the west side of Springbrook Drive. DeFoe also presented council with some covenants for the land he would like honored. After discussion, Mayor Lange made a motion to purchase the land for $7500.00 from DeFoe and list the covenants agreed upon on the purchase agreement. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, except Norm Carlson opposed.

Motion passed. The City Attorney will draw up the purchase agreement.

The 2018 budget was passed out and discussed. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the 2018 budget. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The final levy for 2018 was discussed. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to raise the general service for 2018 $2,000.00.

The final levy for 2018 is set at general fund $75,500.00 and the debt service amount is set at $11,214.00 for a total levy amount of $86,714.00. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Employee annual reviews were done. At this time both employees felt adequate with salaries being paid. Council decided to review salaries again in six months.

Mayor Lange reported to council she had received two donations for the restoration of the Swan River Trail Project. Resolution 171205A & B was presented to council for the donation from the Swanville Women’s Civic Club $250.00 and Stearns Electric for $250.00.

Jim Molitor made a motion to accept resolution #17-1705 A & B. Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The city clerk presented council members with letters from different engineering firms. After discussion it was decided to table engineering firms until the city has

a project in which one would be needed.

Council member Molitor asked if he could go to the school and talk with students about the littering on the streets and sidewalks and the excessive speed the cars are driving before and after school hours on the city streets. Council agreed this would be a good idea.

Being that the City of Swanville has mail-in ballets, a resolution needs to be passed to designate Morrison County Auditor-Treasurers office as the City of Swanville polling place for State & Federal Elections. Mayor Lange made a motion to accept Resolution #171205C designating Morrison County Auditor-Treasures office in Little Falls, MN as the City of Swanville polling place for State & Federal Elections. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

It was decided that there will be a public hearing on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 6:45 p.m. to present to the public the well head protection plan part I. The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. A public hearing meeting will take place at 6:45 p.m. for the well head protection plan part I. There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Joan Olson, Lana Bartells, and Dennis Westrich. People present: MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, First Responder President Steven Hansen, Public Works Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from December 4, 2017 City Council Meeting with the change of “beer” to “hard liquor” under UBA in the presentations , 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried

unanimously.

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda with the addition of Liquor Licenses under new business, 2nd by Westrich.

Motion carried unanimously.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Wendy Rene, citizen of Upsala, could not attend the meeting this evening, but submitted a letter concerning the speeding on Main Street.

Johnson stated that the battery powered electronic speed devices that we can use via the sheriff’s office do not work well in freezing temperatures. He would contact Sheriff Shawn Larson’s office to request extra patrol along Main Street. When it warms up we will try to have some electronic speed signs put up to help curb speeding.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels. Koopmeiners also reported that the plow truck has a new cutting installed.

Fire Department Report: No meeting was held last month.

The department was called out to a house fire the 28th of December and one mutual aid with the Upsala First Response.

First Responders: The First Response Vice President Garrett Doucette requested to advertise for new members due to the resignation of three members. Lange moved to approve the First Responder to hire up to four new people, 2nd by Bartells.

Bartells moved to approve the First Response officers for the 2018 year as follows: President: Steve Hansen; Vice President: Garrett Doucette; Secretary: Marybeth Doucette; Treasurer: Charlie Gunderson; Training Off: Larry Bartells; Safety Officer: Amber Koopmeiners. 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the January Calendar.

Stevens reported on the petty cash for the quarter. She also shared that the City’s new intern for the next 16 weeks is Susie Strusz.

Planning Commission: The Commissioners did not meet in December.

UCDC: No meeting was held.

The next meeting is January 16th at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Recreation Board: There was not meeting in December; the next meeting is January 23.

Safety Committee: The Safety Committee did not meet in December.

Unfinished Business: Maintenance Building: The concrete floor will be poured as soon as it warms up.

New Business: Toning Plus Contract: Westrich moved to approve the Toning Plus Lease for 2018, 2nd by Lange.

John H. “Jack” Rose John H. “Jack” Rose, age 106 of Freeport, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, January 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Robert Rolfes presiding. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday evening at the church.

John Herman Rose was born November 25, 1911 in Freeport, Minnesota to Herman and Theresia (Benolken) Rose. On September 28, 1937, Jack was united in marriage to Christine Rau at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Together, Jack and Christine raised a family of four children. Tree removal along Highway 238 in Albany begins Jan. 22 Motorists in Albany will encounter workers, heavy equipment and potential delays while crews remove trees along Highway 238 between Railroad Avenue and Auer Avenue the week of Jan. 22.

Short segments of Highway 238 will be intermittently reduced to a single lane with flaggers allowing one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone. Motorists who travel Highway 238, north of Railroad Avenue in Albany, should slow down, be prepared to stop, and move over to give crews room to complete their work.

Jack then became the manager of Albany Mutual Telephone Company from 1951 to 1980 when he retired. During his retirement, he was able to attend many auctions and enjoyed his true passion – caring for his horses.

Jack was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and St. Peter’s Court 1556 Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survivors include his four children, Herman (Therese) Rose of Osceola, WI, Carol Loxtercamp of Bumpass, VA, John S. (Sharon) Rose of Big Birch Lake, and Judy (Marvin) Thielen of Melrose; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons; and sister-in-law, Rita Hiltner of Freeport.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Christine in 2002; his parents; son-in-law, Dave Loxtercamp; sisters, Amanda Zirbes, Helen Eichers, Elsie Rose, and infant sister, Hildegard Rose; and brothers, Sylvester and Frank Rose.

January 6, 2018: At 17:27 Leslie Ritter of rural Grey Eagle reported that he struck a deer on Cty. 10 near 211th Ave. The vehicle, a 2003 Hyundai Elantra sustained minor front end damage.

January 9, 2018: At approximately 9:16 am, there was a report of a two-vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Dove Road and Cable Road, in Swanville Township. 22-year-old Ashley Mann of Bowlus, MN was traveling south on Dove Road approaching Cable Road in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. 46-year-old Chad Beste of Sauk Centre, MN was traveling east on Cable Road in a 2014 Ford F-550 Truck. Mann failed to yield at the intersection and was struck by Beste’s vehicle. Beste’s vehicle then went off the roadway and damaged a light pole. Beste was not injured. Mann was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. Gabriel’s Hospital and later transferred to St. Cloud Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Bowlus First Response Team and Gold Cross Ambulance.

The teacher asked young Malcolm: “What do you do at Christmas time?”

Malcolm addressed the class: “Well Miss Jones, my twelve brothers and sisters and I go to midnight mass and we sing hymns; then we come home very late and we put mince pies by the back door and hang up our stockings. Then all excited, we go to bed and wait for Santa Claus to come with all our toys.”

“Very nice Malcolm,” she said. “Now Jimmy, what do you do at Christmas?”

“Well, Miss Jones, my sister and I also go to church with Mom and Dad and we sing carols and we get home ever so late. We put cookies and milk by the chimney and we hang up our stockings. We hardly sleep, waiting for Santa Claus to bring our presents.”

Realizing there were Jewish boys in the class and not wanting to leave them out of the discussion, she asked, “Now, Isaac, what do you do at Christmas?”

Isaac said, “Well, Miss Jones, it’s the same thing every year - Dad comes home from the office, we all pile into the Rolls Royce and drive to Dad’s toy factory. When we get inside, we look at all the empty shelves and begin to sing ‘What A Friend We Have in Jesus.’”

“Then we all get on Dad’s jet and fly to the Bahamas.”
