Keep your funny side up -By Harvey Mackay

Life is funny – or at least, I think it should be.

Finding humor in everyday things is a gift. Our very serious world can be depressing and overwhelming.

Problems at work can seem insurmountable. Your car is making a disturbing noise, and the kids’ school just called to let you know your daughter, who was perfectly healthy this morning, is in the nurse’s office with a fever. None of this is funny.

But . . .

You’ve had issues at work before, and getting angry or throwing a tantrum only makes things worse. What did help break the tension was the clever observation from the office grouch, “I suppose this is a bad time to ask for a raise?” You call the mechanic, who asks you to replicate the sound. That bit of silliness always lightens the mood, my mechanic tells me. The fever won’t be a laughing matter until she’s recovered.

W e ’ v e all had days that test our patience. When circumstances are beyond our control, the only thing we can master is our reaction. A sense of humor re-aligns our perspective so that we can avoid blowing things out of proportion.

In other words, when you are tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the fire department usually uses water. Throw a little water on those tough situations and douse the anxieties before they spread – like wildfire – into other areas of your life.

Stories and humor were nearly as important as oxygen and water to our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, according to the Lincoln Institute.

Humor helped offset his natural sadness and escape from the internal and external pressures and events of his life.

Writer Norman Cousins observed: “What seems clear is that the greater the weight of his Presidency, the greater was the need for release. Laughter to him was not merely a random physical response to humor but a physiological reality that was essential for restoration and rejuvenation.”

A terrific resource on maintaining a sense of humor is Rita Davenport’s inspiring book “Funny Side Up.” In it she describes her multi-faceted career, as a teacher, social worker, television host, bestselling author, motivational

speaker and corporate president. I might add Rita has been incredibly successful at all of them. She led the large network marketing company, Arbonne International, to $980 million in sales from 1991-2011. Rita is a Hall of Fame speaker who delivers lifechanging success principles with a sense of humor. She understands that laughter increases retention by 80 percent.

Her book draws on her life experiences, starting with her dirtpoor youth in Tennessee. She credits her success to her ability to dream big dreams when faced with the life of struggle and poverty that her parents knew. Her positive attitude has carried her through plenty of challenges. My favorite chapter is titled “Laugh Your Way to Success (Or, How to Cope with Stress, Guilt, Change, Failure, and Life’s Other Little Blessings.)”

Among her pearls of wisdom, she advises bringing a sense of humor to the table, whatever table that might be. She says, “Laughter is internal jogging. New Trailer Decal Requirement

If you trailer a boat or water-related equipment like docks and lifts in Minnesota, you must take AIS training and get a trailer decal.

• Online training will be available here in January 2015.

• Paper home-study training packets will also be available in January 2015 by calling 651-351-2000.

• Trailer decals are required on trailers starting July 1, 2015.

What is it?

Beginning in 2015 a new trailer decal requirement is scheduled to start. The new law requires anyone who transports watercraft or water-related equipment like docks and lifts with a trailer in Minnesota to complete an aquatic invasive species training course. After completing the course, you receive a decal that must be displayed on your trailer.

Who needs to take the training?

Anyone who transports watercraft or water-related equipment with a trailer in Minnesota needs to complete training and display the decal.

How often do I need to renew?

Every three years you need to complete training and get a new trailer decal.

What if I have more than one trailer?

Once you complete the course you can receive extra decals if you own or use multiple trailers for watercraft or water-related equipment.

How much does it cost?

Costs of online training and paper home-study course are being determined and will be posted as soon as possible.

When can I trailer a watercraft or water-related equipment?

You can trailer watercraft or waterrelated equipment as soon as you finish training. You’ll get a temporary completion certificate at the end of the training that you keep with you until your decal arrives in the mail.

Where can I get a decal?

You can only get the decal mailed to you after completing the training course.

It is not available for purchase at DNR or Deputy Registrar offices.

Where do I display the decal?

The decal must be adhered to the side of the trailer frame tongue near the hitch in a manner that is readily visible and does not interfere with the display of any other trailer registration requirements.

How is this different from past AIS decals for my boat or trailer?

There have been aquatic invasive species decals required for boats and inspection stickers for trailers in the past but they are no longer required. You only need this new decal.

I bought a new trailer and need to get a decal on it. What do I do?

Obituaries David H. “Dave” Althaus D a v i d H. “Dave” Althaus, age 68 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Monday, December 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

David Henry Althaus was born June 11, 1946 in Melrose, Minnesota to Ray and Celina (Braegelmann) Althaus. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1964. He was united in marriage to Diane Loehr on September 25, 1971 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. Dave owned and operated Althaus Bulk Milk from 1967 through 1978. In 1979 he started Althaus Construction which he operated until his retirement in 2013.

He was a member of St. Mary’s

Catholic Church in Melrose and the American Legion Post 101. Dave was a family man who loved and cared for his family, especially his granddaughter, Courtney. She was very special to Dave.

He loved going up north to hunt with his son, Jason and other friends. He also enjoyed ice fishing and having coffee and breakfast with his buddies.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Althaus of Melrose; son, Jason Althaus (special friend, Beth Revermann) of New Munich; granddaughter, Courtney Althaus; mother, Celina Althaus of Melrose; brother and sister, Ron (Mary) Althaus of Melrose and Mary Kay (Tim) Garvey of White Bear Lake; and nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his father, Ray Althaus; and brother, Ken Althaus.

Serving as urn bearer was Chad Althaus. Cross bearer was Courtney Althaus and scripture bearer was Michaela Althaus. Honorary bearers were Rick Schneider, Lyle Olmscheid, Ken Schneider, Jerry Wiechmann, Dick Imdieke, Jerry Imdieke, Dennis Bertram, Ralph Inderrieden, Mike Ellering, Don Brang, and Jeff Zachman.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Loren A. Williams, age 87 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, December 27 at First United Church of Christ in Sauk Centre with Rev. Timothy Sutton officiating.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Loren Adrian Williams was born October 21, 1927 in Judson Township, Blue Earth Township, Minnesota to William and Addie (Romack) Williams.

He graduated from Garden City High School in Garden City, Minnesota and then graduated from Mankato State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. Loren served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he drove tank south of the 38 degree parallel in Korea.

He was married for 34 years to Nancy Randall before their divorce.

He was united in marriage to Beverly

Adelle E. Renneker

Adelle E. Renneker, age 93 of Freeport, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in M e l r o s e , Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Adelle Elizabeth Steinemann was born August 3, 1921 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Elizabeth (Osterhues) Steinemann. Prior to marriage, Adelle worked in the health care system. She was united in marriage to Norbert “Norb” Renneker on June 24, 1947 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Adelle was very active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. She cleaned, tended to the flowers, and took care of the linens at church for many years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Goldenaires Senior Citizens, and the

Fuller on February 16, 2001 in St. Cloud.

Beverly passed away on October 24, 2009. Loren worked for the State of Minnesota at the Hastings State Hospital and was the business manager at the Home School until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of First United Church of Christ in Sauk Centre and the American Legion Post 67.

Loren’s passion was his HarleyDavidson motorcycle. After his retirement, Loren had logged over 358,000 miles and rode until he was the age of 86. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his children, Kevin (Ruth) Williams of Norwood Young America, Scott Williams of Richfield, Lori (Steve) Bona of Delano, Michaela (Tim) Quello of Plymouth, and Matt (Martha) Williams of Sauk Centre; 13 grandchildren with one on the way; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly Williams; and brothers, Bill and Bob Williams.

Serving as casket bearers were Josh Williams, Parker Williams, Reid Williams, Dominic Bona, Kelly Schmiesing, and Derek Schmiesing.

Honorary bearers were John Williams and Jesse Williams.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Christian Mothers. Adelle enjoyed gardening, traveling, bowling, and loved taking care of her family which she truly adored.

Survivors include her children, Mike (Jean) Renneker of Freeport and Mary Beth (Marv) Denne of Monticello; 10 grandchildren, Rhonda Salmi, Russell (Jessica) Renneker, Dana (Chad) Simons, Alison (Roger) Green, Lindsay (Justin) Kahnert, Brandon (Megan) Denne, Jake Renneker, Erin Denne, Josh Renneker, and Ryan Denne; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Adelle was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert “Norb” Renneker on December 17, 2014; parents; sons, Ronald Renneker and Thomas Renneker; brothers and sisters, Marie Dollinger, Josepha Kerfeld, Loretta Hinnenkamp, Joseph Steinemann, and Henry Steinemann.

Serving as casket bearers were Josh Renneker, Jake Renneker, Russ Renneker, Erin Denne, Brandon Denne, and Ryan Denne. Cross bearer was Dana Simons and scripture bearer was Don Kerfeld. Gift bearers were Jean Renneker and Marv Denne. Eucharistic Minister was Jean Zwilling. Eulogy was

Dana Marie Heisick

A memorial service for Dana Heisick will be held Monday, January 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Community Country Church in Holdingford, Minnesota with Rev. Gregg Valentine officiating. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 also at the church.

Dana died on December 26, 2014 at her home in Brooklyn Park. She was born September 10, 1956 to Raymond and Bernice Heisick of rural Bowlus,

Minnesota.

Left to cherish her memory are brothers, John (Ruth), rural Bowlus, Tim (Arlene) Westminster, Co., sister Jackie (Sheldon) Sauer, Sauk Rapids, stepmother, Judith Heisick, stepsister, Debbie (Brian) Baldwin, stepbrother, Dan Koehn, Godchild Bailey Cooper and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dana was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Bernice Heisick.

Grey Eagle/Swanville Knights of Columbus to Sponsor Youth Free Throw Championship January 11 All boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2015 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

The local competition will be held January 11th, 2015 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Swanville High School gym.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. All boys and girls 9-14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions.

All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. For entry forms or additional information contact Tom DeFrance at 320-360-1175.

Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer Training to be held at Northland Arboretum Do you enjoy learning about the natural world? If so, consider becoming a Minnesota Master Naturalist volunteer!

Northland Arboretum, Brainerd, MN is hosting a Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer Training beginning April 16th, 2015.

Master Naturalist volunteers complete a 40-hour hands-on course with expert instructors and fellow learners – studying natural history, environmental interpretation, and conservation stewardship. Final certification comes with the completion of 40 hours of volunteer service. The program offers three courses that correspond to Minnesota’s three major ecosystems – entitled ‘Big Woods, Big Rivers’, ‘Prairies and Potholes’, and ‘Northwoods, Great Lakes’.

This course will cover the natural and cultural history of the “North Woods, Great Lakes” region. We will provide an in-depth overview of the boreal forest ecosystem and participants will observe and learn about the variety of plant and animal communities of the region. Through the course, participants will develop their ability to observe nature and will learn tools to improve these skills. In addition, participants will improve their communication skills by sharing knowledge with other participants and working on a group project.

The classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM April 16–May 21 with two required Field Trips Saturday April 18 and May 2. There is a fee for the course, which includes materials. Scholarships are available. For more information contact Peg Serani, arboretum@brainerd. net.

Stearns History Museum Breakfast Club

The January Breakfast Club will feature motivational speaker and teacher Rick Rassier, who will discuss his approach to life by kicking it up to “The Next Level.”

Rick Rassier, a teacher at Foley Elementary School, will present “The Next Level” during the Breakfast Club program that begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at the Stearns History Museum.

Rassier, who developed an appetite for sports while working on his family’s farm in St. Joseph, has traveled around the country for 20 years as a “one-man volleyball team” competing against sixperson teams. He then used his experience to develop motivational speeches to encourage a positive message and inspire student athletes.

Everyone looks forward to a New Year and the hope it represents. “Well wishers” come at us from every direction wanting us to reap a harvest of joy and happiness, peace and prosperity. A “good new year” is a universal desire that everyone seeks. But how can we assure ourselves of having a Happy New Year? The answer comes from Isaiah 41:10.

First, we must honor the two “nots” - do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Fear and dismay will disturb our minds, trouble our souls and destroy our health. Only as we place our faith in the goodness and grace of God will our fears evaporate and dismay vanish.

Second, add the two “I ams” - I am with you and I am your God. Our God is always with us and we are never beyond His reach. When problems arise He wants to solve them. When needs arise He will meet them. When foes would destroy us He will conquer them. When storms appear He will calm them.

Third, we need to mix them with the three “I wills.” I will strengthen you. He has all the strength we need with some to spare. I will help you. Here is help that is seeking us and is sufficient for every situation. I will uphold you. With what? The very same hands that hold the universe together!

If we want 2015 to be a Happy New Year we must begin every day of every week of every month of the year reading God’s Word and spending time in prayer.

The Law of the Lid -By Dr. John C. Maxwell Leadership A b i l i t y Determines a Person’s Level of Effectiveness.

I often open my leadership conferences by explaining the Law of the Lid because it helps people understand the value of leadership. If you can get a handle on this law, you will see the incredible impact of leadership on every aspect of life. So here it is: leadership ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness. The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential. The higher the individual’s ability to lead, the higher the lid on his potential. To give you an example, if your leadership rates an 8, then your effectiveness can never be greater than a 7. If your leadership is only a 4, then your effectiveness will be no higher than a 3. Your leadership ability—for better or for worse—always determines your effectiveness and the potential impact of your organization.

Let me tell you a story that illustrates the Law of the Lid. In 1937, two young brothers named Dick and Maurice opened a small drive-in restaurant in Pasadena, California, located just east of Glendale. Their tiny drive-in restaurant was a great success, and in 1940, they decided to move the operation to San Bernardino, a working-class boomtown fifty miles east of Los Angeles. Their business exploded. Annual sales reached $200,000.

In 1948, their intuition told them that times were changing, and they made modifications to their restaurant business. They streamlined everything. They reduced their menu and focused on selling hamburgers.

They created what they called the Speedy Service System, in which their kitchen became like an assembly line, where each employee focused on service with speed. The brothers’ goal was to fill each customer’s order in thirty seconds or less. And they succeeded. By the mid-1950s, annual revenue hit $350,000, and by then, Dick and Maurice split net profits of about $100,000 each year.

Who were these brothers? Back in those days, you could have found out by driving to their small restaurant on the corner of Fourteenth and E Streets

in San Bernardino, to see a neon sign that said simply MCDONALD’S HAMBURGERS. Dick and Maurice McDonald had hit the great American jackpot, but they never went any farther because their weak leadership put a lid on their ability to succeed.

The McDonald brothers’ genius was in customer service and kitchen organization. That talent led to the creation of a new system of food and beverage service. But in 1952, when they tried marketing the McDonald’s concept, their effort was a dismal failure. The reason was simple. They lacked the leadership necessary to make a larger enterprise effective.

Dick and Maurice were good singlerestaurant owners. They understood how to run a business, make their systems efficient, cut costs, and increase profits. They were efficient managers. But they were not leaders.

Their thinking patterns clamped a lid down on what they could do and become. At the height of their success, Dick and Maurice found themselves smack-dab against the Law of the Lid. In 1954, the brothers hooked up with a man named Ray Kroc. As soon as he visited the store, he had a vision for its potential. In his mind he could see the restaurant going nationwide in hundreds of markets. He soon struck a deal with Dick and Maurice, and in 1955, he formed McDonald’s Systems, Inc. (later called the McDonald’s Corporation).

And the leadership lid in Ray Kroc’s life was sky high. Between 1955 and 1959, Kroc succeeded in opening 100 restaurants. Four years after that, there were 500 McDonald’s.

In 1961 for the sum of $2.7 million, Kroc bought the exclusive rights to McDonald’s from the brothers, and he proceeded to turn it into an American institution and global entity.

I believe that success is within the reach of just about everyone. But I also believe that personal success without leadership ability brings only limited effectiveness. Without leadership ability, a person’s impact is only a fraction of what it could be with good leadership. Whatever you will accomplish is restricted by your ability to lead others.

Let me give you a picture of what I mean. Let’s say that when it comes to success, you’re an 8 (on a scale from 1 to 10). That’s pretty good. I think it would be safe to say that the McDonald brothers were in that range.

But let’s also say that in leadership you’re functioning as a 1. To increase your level of effectiveness, you have a couple of choices. You could work very hard to increase your dedication to success and excellence—to work toward becoming a 10 in that area. It’s possible that, with a lot of effort, you could make it to that level.

But you have another option. You can work hard to increase your level of leadership. By raising your leadership ability—without necessarily increasing your success dedication at all—you can increase your original effectiveness a tremendous amount. That’s because leadership has a multiplying effect.

I’ve seen its impact again and again in all kinds of businesses and nonprofit organizations. And that’s why I’ve

taught leadership for more than thirty years.

Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes from the regular meeting of October 28, 2014. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson.

Correspondence included an e-mail request for information on maintenance on Dogwood Loop, worker’s comp forms and notices of Planning and Zoning and Grey Eagle fire meetings.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5036 through 5054: Rev. $1,769.39; R&B $5,462.80. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The board received an application for a beer license from the Swanville Lions for the Long Lake Fishing tournament on February 21, 2015.

In the road report the contractor and board will watch for problem areas as they come up. Sanding the icy roads is ineffective in the really cold weather as the sand mixture just bounces off the hard driving surface.

The general election in Burnhamville Township had a 63% turnout.

Or is it? -By Jeffrey Gitomer Ben Franklin sought to cultivate his character by a plan of 13 virtues, which he developed at age 20 (in 1726), and continued to practice in some form for the rest of his life.

His autobiography lists his 13 virtues as: 1. Temperance. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.

2. Silence. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.

3. Order. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.

4. Resolution. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.

5. Frugality. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing.

6. Industry. Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.

7. Sincerity. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly.

8. Justice. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty.

9. Moderation. Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.

10. Cleanliness. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths (sic), or habitation.

11. Tranquility. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.

12. Chastity. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another’s peace or reputation.

13. Humility. Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

Franklin didn’t try to work on them all at once. Instead, he would work on one and only one each week, leaving all others to their ordinary chance.

lieved the attempt at living them made him a better man. He believed these virtues contributed greatly to his success and happiness.

In his autobiography, Franklin listed and wrote about the virtues, “I hope, therefore, that some of my descendants may follow the example and reap the benefit.”

His list is certainly no be-all endall list of virtuous characteristics, BUT it gets you thinking about yourself and your virtues. Impossible not to.

Not wanting to in any way infringe on the genius of what was Ben Franklin, I’d like to offer some of today’s characteristics of virtue and add to Ben’s list.

I’ll add a few words of definition to each, but more important, think about each of these virtues as it relates to you, your self-disciplines, your actions, and your ethics. Maybe even RATE YOURSELF on each one as you read.

Were he alive today, Ben’s virtues might have included: • Truth. Your ability to be truthful to others and truthful to yourself.

• Honesty. Take honest actions you can be proud of.

• Trust. Be trustworthy and trusting. Trust others until proven otherwise. Be trustworthy by example.

• Ethics. The right way you conduct yourself in business and life.

• Speed. Response it today’s world is immediate. How immediate are you?

• Reliable. People want to deal with reliable people. How reliable are you?

• Loyal. Getting loyalty because you earned it. Giving loyalty because it’s your philosophy.

• Responsible. Not just responsible to others, but both to yourself and for yourself.

• Observant. Having value based peripheral vision, both of others and yourself.

• Consistent. Making the highest and best decision – all the time.

• Independent. Not a follower to be “safe,” but a self-ruler of your time and fate.

• Faith. Not just religion, faith in people, faith in family, and spirituality of self.

5 Steps to Being Financially Fit in the New Year

By Dave Ramsey It’s another new year, and that means it’s time for yet another set of resolutions. But if you’re like most Americans, you’ll probably forget your goals by mid-February. So how can you turn your financial resolutions into reality in 2015?

Make a plan. The number-one mistake people make with their money is they don’t bother with a plan. They have no idea where their money is going! The money comes in and the money goes out, and only the names are changed to protect the innocent.

You have to do a budget! Put a name to every dollar you earn. Tell your money what to do instead of wondering where it went. Remember, it takes at least three months of practice and dedication to really make your budget work.

Save for emergencies. Murphy is going to visit. You know Murphy: If something can go wrong, it will. I promise you it’s going to rain from time to time, so you’ll need an umbrella. Save $1,000 in cash as quickly as possible for an emergency fund before you begin attacking your debt.

After you pay off all your debt except for your mortgage, increase your emergency fund to cover three to six months of expenses. Layoffs happen, cars break down, and kids get sick. A fully funded emergency fund can turn these disasters into nothing more than minor inconveniences.

Don’t make the mistake of putting life’s emergencies on a credit card. You’ll end up paying on them for months or even years to come. An emergency fund gives you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you can handle whatever life throws at you.

Use the debt snowball. List all of your debts, except your house, from smallest payoff balance to largest. Make the minimum payment on every debt except the smallest and put every extra dollar you can find toward the smallest debt until it is paid.

If you can find a way to generate extra income, do it! Take on a part-time job for a while or have a big yard sale and get rid of that stuff you never use, wear or didn’t want in the first place! Then focus on paying off the next smallest debt, then the next, then the next, rolling the money over each time.

Have plastic surgery. Cut up all of your credit cards. We call this a plasectomy. Everyone says they pay off their credit cards each month, but the truth is virtually no one does.

Carnegie Melon conducted a study that showed when McDonalds began accepting credit cards, the average pur-

chase increased by 47 percent. People are more reluctant to spend money when they see tens and twenties leaving their wallets and going into someone else’s.

You really feel it when you have to lay out cash. Get rid of the credit cards!

Invest for the future. When you’re debt-free and have a fully funded emergency fund, you’re ready to start planning for the future. Invest 15 percent of your income in a 401(k), Roth IRA and other tax-advantaged retirement plans.

Why not more? Because the extra money you’ll save can go toward saving for college (if you have kids) or paying off your home early.

Do these things sound like a dream?

Well, I can tell you from experience that some dreams do come true. If you’re willing to be disciplined and focused, live on a budget, and have a plan for your money, the sky’s the limit. A juggler, driving to his next performance, is stopped by the police.

“What are those machetes doing in your car?” asks the cop.

“I juggle them in my act.”

“Oh, yeah?” says the doubtful cop.

“Let’s see you do it.”

The juggler gets out and starts tossing and catching the knives.

Another man driving by slows down to watch. “Wow” says the passer-by.

“I’m glad I quit drinking. Look at the test they’re giving now!”
