Street Smarts put you in the fast lane -By Harvey Mackay I’m back with another installment of street smarts, those skills that go beyond what is taught in school – the lessons we learn by experience and practice. Never underestimate the value and importance of “extracurricular” education.

First idea: Don’t be afraid to make a decision. Be afraid NOT to make a decision. Good judgment is a critically important skill for any person to have, but especially for those in leadership positions. Good judgment is such an important attribute that it is often listed

first by employers as required qualities of job applicants.

In business, the success or failure of the organization hinges on judgments made at all levels. Good judgment is the ability to make the best decision possible based on the information you have, without being swayed by others or predetermined ideas.

What kind of a decision-maker are you? Take a few minutes to contemplate the question, because once you become aware of how you make (or don’t make) decisions, you will be more apt to make wiser choices in the future.

Next idea: Never make a decision until you have to. Always bargain for more time to postpone doom. Things can change over time.

For example, there once was a king who was trying to find someone who could teach his horse to fly. As the king was conducting court one day, two guards dragged in a beggar who had just stolen a loaf of bread.

The king said, “Take him away and chop his head off!” As he was being dragged away, he said, “But my king, my king, I can teach your horse to fly. Just give me two years.”

“Granted,” the king said.

As the beggar is being carted out, a guard quizzically asks him, “Why did you promise that?”

“Look … In two years, I may be dead.

The king may be dead. Or who knows, maybe I can teach the horse to fly!”

Next idea: Practice the rule of ten thousand. This rule helps determine whether something can’t be done or whether someone doesn’t care enough to get it done.

The Rule of Ten Thousand says, “If I give you an extra $10,000 to get to work by 8 a.m. every work day for six months straight, can you do it?” Watch how fast the obstacles disappear, contingencies are set up, departure time from home is earlier and so on.

You don’t necessarily give people $10,000, but it’s a good way to see if something is possible.

Next idea: Always put the pressure on yourself and tell everyone what your goals are. I do this with all kinds of projects. It’s great motivation.

Next idea: You can take any amount of pain, as long as you know it will end.

For example, I was running the Twin Cities Marathon several years back and a woman stopped me with two miles to go and said she wasn’t sure she could finish.

She said, “Mr. Mackay, motivate me!”

I gave her this lesson on pain as we ran side-by-side.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Thompsons

I believe Martin was born in the late 1800’s. He was a smaller sized fellow and although I knew him in his later years, he always seemed to be quite physically adept. He tried to be a farmer, but his wife actually did much of the farm-work, assisted by their son. I don’t think farming actually was his goal for life.

He was born on the farm that was his home when he died in his 80’s.

He told some stories about the area as it appeared in his younger years.

Evidently the entire area was primarily newly forested with a few fields that were usually a couple of acres in size.

There was an abundance of wildlife, which was their primary food source in his younger years.

He told a story about their location on Big Swan Lake. Their farm was located across the lake from the Ishnala Resort, which was a popular Indian campground in the 1800’s. The Indians would travel by canoe on the Mississippi, paddle up the Swan River to Big Swan Lake. They would rest there for a couple of days, then paddle to Big Birch Lake.

Martin said they would go there for “meetings” and return after about 3 weeks. He said that when the Indians were camped across the lake, they had to keep the cows out of the pasture, since the cows were considered free food by the Indians. If one attempted to canoe the Swan River today, you would spend a lot of time trying to get past the obstructions.

At one time the Thompsons lived in a well-built two story house. They then raised laying hens to create a little additional income. When the chicks were delivered, they needed to be kept in warm housing for a month until their feathers were developed. The most appropriate place for this brooding period was the upper floor of their house. This method is not commonly used today.

Martin would use the horses, but didn’t drive the tractor. That work was left to their son Art. They had a small Alice Chalmers tractor, which seemed to get stuck every time they used it.

The horses or a neighbor then had to “unstuck” it. As the years went by, we frequently baled their hay for them, since Art and his mother were becoming unable to do the job.

I trapped their gophers when I was about 10 years old. Somehow their sandy soil attracted both striped and pocket gophers. I was paid $.10 for the pocket gophers and $.05 for the striped gophers. I really looked forward to being able to carry the day’s catch to their house and get a treat of cookies and nectar.

Neither Art or Martin liked to cut wood, which was needed for both heat and cooking. There were times when the horses were used to drag a tree from the woods to the yard for use in winter months. They never used chain saws, so the wood was reduced to usable sizes with an ax or hand saw.

History coming from the people who lived it is much more interesting than picking up a history book, which primarily deals with political and economic happenings. People can make history become more alive.

people you don’t fire who make your life miserable. And whenever I say that I get more amens than a Billy Graham sermon.

Next idea: Maximize your education dollars. When your company sends its people to conferences, make sure you get maximum value. At our company, we insist that our people come back from conferences and teach the rest of the staff what they learned. This way we get a terrific return on our investment.

Next idea: Never give an ultimatum unless you mean it. A close friend shared this story of a high stakes negotiation.

He’s living in Minnesota and wanted desperately to buy one of his competitors in Los Angeles. He had information that whatever his bid was, the owners had a local businessman who would bid for the business as a wedge to get the price up.

By Betty Kemper and Laura Hellmann St. Mary’s Church, with its historic building, statues, stain-glass windows, altars, church pews made in our town and inviting steeples, is a landmark, and it can remain a landmark if it is restored. It is a reminder of when St. Boniface Parish and St. Patrick’s Parish came together to form St. Mary’s Parish.

We don’t need a new “campus,” in a new location, when the building we have worshipped in for over 100 years has been found to be sound.

Maybe you’d rather worship in a new building with four walls and a crucifix hanging above the altar; a building that doesn’t give you that warm, welcoming feeling like St. Mary’s Church does.

Who is going to pay for this new campus? Chances are it won’t come from some young people because attending church is not a priority like it is for the older generations, who have put their heart, soul and money into St. Mary’s Church. And do you think, with a new campus, you are going to lure back parishioners who have gone to oth-

er churches?

There are so many unanswered questions. Where is the fire investigation at?

Why and when did the decision go from restoration to build new? How much money has been spent to gather information for the new “campus” and who is paying for that?

What about the money donated to the restoration fund? How much is in it and where it is now?

On the evening of Jan. 26 the bishop made time to come to Cornerstone in Melrose and talk to a group of Hispanics. Was it about the new campus? Will he be at the Feb. 11 meeting with parishioners to face the people and answer questions?

I remember when St. Pat’s and St. Boniface were combined into the Church of St. Mary. As a St. Pat’s parishioner is was difficult to accept that our church was closing, but both sides worked together, I’m sure compromising, to make St. Mary’s a vibrant parish.

St. Mary’s parish can be vibrant and united again if we work together to restore the church, not by building a new campus.

Obituaries Veronica M. Ecker

Veronica M. Ecker, age 97 of New Munich, died peacefully, with family by her side on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 8 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Veronica Mae Schrantz was born September 21, 1920 in Slayton, Minnesota to Arthur and Anna (Walsh) Schrantz. She was united in marriage to Elmer Ecker on January 3, 1942 at St. Anne’s Catholic

Church in Slayton. After completing the nursing program at the St. Cloud Hospital, Veronica and Elmer started their family. She would help Elmer as his bookkeeper at the feed mill in New Munich while raising her family. After her husband’s death in 1969, she took refresher courses in nursing and began working as a registered nurse at the Albany Hospital.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, St. Ann’s Christian Women, Daughters of Isabella Joan of Arc Circle of Melrose #568, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary. She loved spending time with her family during summer vacations taken at Lake Mary.

Agnes C. Imdieke, age 90 of Albany, died peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 7 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment was in Saint John the Baptist Cemetery in Meire Grove.

Agnes Catherine Imdieke was born September 2, 1927 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to John and Fredericka (Macke) Imdieke. Agnes was a waitress at the Melrose Hotel in Melrose and the Waldorf Hotel and Café in Sauk Centre. She then cared for Ione Kinsella and Mary Dorn and later worked at Jennie-O in Melrose. She was a member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Agnes won multiple awards for her painting and her coloring. She enjoyed cooking and baking; her specialty was baking gingerbread. She listened to many radio broadcasts of the Meire Grove Grovers and Albany High School ball

Ervin H. Duevel

Ervin H. Duevel, age 83 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m.

Monday, February 12 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard following the Mass.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Sunday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Catholic United Financial will pray at 6 p.m. and parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Ervin Henry Duevel was born July 15, 1934 at the Duevel homestead north of Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Helen (Schmidt) Duevel. Ervin grew up on the farmstead where he developed the tools he used throughout his life. Ervin believed that success in life was achieved through hard work, being meticulous to detail, perseverance and love of his family. He instilled many of these qualities into his children. Ervin’s path through life took many routes. He was very proud of his work during the years he spent serving in the U.S. Army. While stationed in Alaska, Ervin helped build many of the roads at the time the Alaska territory was being granted statehood. After returning from Alaska, Ervin traveled to Northwest North Dakota to find work with the trade he loved the most, farming. During the time he spent working for the Melby family in Bowbells, North Dakota, he found the love of his life, Denice Rogers. Shortly after their marriage on November 25, 1961 in Bowbells, they moved back to Melrose to help at the family farm and raise a family.

cheese plant in Melrose. A few years after the cheese plant burned down, Ervin and Denice moved back to North Dakota to help their daughter and son-in-law farm and ranch. Ervin and Denice found some of their most peaceful years helping care for their newest grandson in North Dakota.

After Ervin’s health started to fail, they moved back to Melrose to help lighten the workload at the Duevel farmstead and enjoy their other grandchildren. During this time, Ervin fought the onset and advanced stages of dementia. He enjoyed playing cards, watching baseball and softball, and always had a smile and soft spot for all his grandchildren. He will be remembered fondly as this being one of his greatest traits.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Catholic United Financial, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Ervin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Denice of Melrose, three sons, Jerome (Kim) of Melrose, Duane (Cindy) of Melrose, Shawn (Nancy) of New Munich, daughter, Sandra (John) Schmid of Carson, North Dakota; nine grandchildren with one on the way and three great-grandchildren; siblings, Eddie (Mary Jane) of Sauk Centre, Lorraine (Herbert) Schmidt of Sauk Centre, Joseph (Dorothy) of Elrosa; and sister-inlaw, Marge Rogers of New Salem, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3-year-old brother, Jerome; sister, Bernice Kuefler; brothers-in-law, Joseph Kuefler, Merlin Rogers, Gerald Rogers, Lonnie Nelson, and Bruce Pollert; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Nelson and Ardell Pollert.

Appearing before a joint meeting of legislative transportation committees, the folks from MN.IT (the state’s IT department) and the Department of Public Safety announced they would need an additional $37 million to fix the many problems and finish the upgrade to the new system known as MNLARS. That’s on top of the nearly $100 million spent so far on the project, which was rolled out in a rather auspicious debut this past July.

The new program, many years in the making, was beset by numerous flaws right from the start. Everything from increased wait times for processing applications at local DMV offices to total system-wide freeze-ups. The roll out of the new MNLARS system caused headaches for residents attempting to get new license tabs or to register vehicles, for car dealerships trying to complete vehicle transfers and for those trying to work with the new system. Local offices racked up substantial expenses hiring more staff or paying overtime to those who stayed at work longer trying to get their work done. Back in September, at the peak of e-mail inquiries seeking help in navigating the system, wait times for

The MNLARS people released what they called a “roadmap and associated budget” for the improvement and ongoing enhancement of the system. Without this new infusion of state money, they said, it will be difficult to finish the job. It was put this way: “Current resources will only support a small volume of the work needed to be done.”

The obvious questions linger, such as how could this have already cost so much, nearly double its original estimate? Why has it taken so long to complete? And why is even more funding needed to finish the job?

We were assured the system would work prior to its rollout, and then after its release, MN.IT said that it was making progress and that changes were being made. Now, with this latest announcement, it would appear that progress will stop or slow considerably unless more funding is provided by the Legislature.

This entire new system is like a big “black hole,” which we are being asked to keep pouring more money into. At least to this point, it’s been extremely frustrating for the people of Minnesota, and a huge and expensive failure.

Attended a meeting in Willmar last week sponsored by the Department of Agriculture. It was intended for those who work with farmers, either through their government jobs or in the private sector. Interest was high, as the room was packed. Currently, times are difficult in ag, especially for those trying to make ends meet in dairy. The cost of production is simply too high in relation to the prices farmers receive for their products. For many, it comes down to how fast they burn through equity built up through the years.

We learned that counseling help is available. There is a Minnesota Farm and Rural Helpline that’s confidential, free of charge, and available 24/7. The number is 833.600.2670.

We’re trying to pay off our debt using the debt snowball system, and we each make about $45,000 a year.

She’s a teacher, and she’s planning on going back to school for her master’s degree, but she’s thinking about quitting her job to do this. She’ll be able to make more money with the additional education, and she would only be unemployed for two years. The degree program will cost us $2,000 out of pocket per semester for two years. Does this sound like a good idea?

Lots of people — especially teachers — hold down their jobs and go back to school to further their education.

I’m not sure trying to make it on one income when you’re that deep in debt is a good idea.

Whatever you do, don’t borrow more money to make this happen.

Cash flow it, or don’t do it. We’re talking about $8,000 total, and you’ve got $72,000 in debt hanging over your heads already. My advice would be to wait until you’ve got the other debt knocked out, then save up and pay

However, there were outstanding costs of $1,500 with the funeral services we had to pay out of pocket, because she had outlived the insurance policy attached to the pre-payment plan. I know you say it’s always better to pre-plan, not pre-pay, for a funeral. Can you refresh my understanding of this?

-Rebecca Dear Rebecca, Let’s use a round figure, and say the cost of a funeral is $10,000. What would $10,000 grow to 25 years from now if it were invested in a good mutual fund? Now, juxtapose that number with the increase in the cost of a funeral over that time. The average inflation rate of consumer-purchased items is around four percent. So, the cost of funerals, on average, has risen about four percent a year. By comparison, you could’ve invested that money, and it would’ve grown at 10 or 12 percent in a good mutual fund.

Now understand, I’m not knocking folks who are in the funeral business.

But lots of businesses that provide these services realize more margin in selling pre-paid policies than they do in caskets. In other words, they don’t make as much money selling the

Do you understand my reasoning?

If we knew the exact date she prepaid, and how much she pre-paid, that figure invested in a good mutual fund would be a whole lot more than the cost of a reasonable funeral. It’s the same principle behind the reason I advise folks to not pre-pay college, or just about anything else, that’s likely far into the future. The money you could’ve made on the investment is a lot more than the value of pre-paying.

Pre-planning, on the other hand, is a great idea for many things — including funerals.

mulated or records we have set. It does not come from any amount of power we have because of our achievements. This gladness that the Psalmist writes about comes from what God has done for us.

Another Psalmist wrote, “But may all who search for You be filled with joy and gladness. May those who love Your salvation repeatedly shout, ‘The Lord is great.’” And another Psalmist said, “Let the godly rejoice. Let them be glad in God’s presence.”

We often set “goals” for ourselves that we think will bring a sense of well-being and fulfillment to us - the “if only” statements we make: “If only I can get a promotion I will be satisfied,” or “If only we had a larger home our family will be happy,” or “If only....” and the list goes on.

But the “glad” that comes from God that can fill our hearts and lives comes as a result of what He has done for us: made possible our salvation through Jesus Christ, His Son and our Savior. Because of Him we can be glad and sing for joy, we can know that “all things are working together” for our good and His glory.

Creation didn’t just happen, it hasn’t been around forever, the complexity of life demands a creator, an intelligent designer who at a bare minimum set the intricate details of creation in order and we know this, creation itself tells us.

God the creator of heaven and earth, who sits above the circle of the earth is hidden from us by creation itself. For God works through the details of his creation, through the very blood cells that carry the air we breath through out our bodies, through the plants and animals that sprout forth and nourish life and he cares for his creation. Did you not know?

We should also know that that there is something wrong with creation. What creation doesn’t tell us that God’s Word does is that God’s prefect creation has come under the creator’s own curse because of our sin and disobedience. Did you not know?

Human will and ingenuity can create for us a life free from some of the more uncomfortable curses sin conveys but it will never deliver us from death, neither physical or eternal. When we turn to the things of this creation like modern medicine and technology to defy the curse and seek eternal life apart for our Creator we once again worship creation instead of the Creator. Did you not know?

In this fallen creation we grow faint and weary but God, our creator does not. In living under the curse of sin we must rely on our creator to give us the strength to endure. God cursed his creation in order to save us from it. Wheth-

er it be forbidden fruit, money, power, medicine or love God’s single goal is to draw us to him in faith alone.

Isaiah 40:31, “Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run (from sin and towards God) and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Faith in God, the father, creator of heaven and earth is a waiting game. Faith holds to the revealed words and promises of God that do not give immediate deliverance from the curse of sin but do deliver immediate and complete deliverance from the eternal consequence of our sin, namely eternal death and separation from our creator.

Creation itself reveals little about the nature of God and shows us all that we care to see regarding sin and yet it reveals nothing concerning God’s mercy. A mercy we long for, a mercy we wait for, a mercy that is revealed through flesh and blood in God’s own time and design. A mercy that removes illness so we may serve, a mercy that expels demons, a mercy that prays on our behalf to God our creator for the forgiveness of sin we so desperately need. (Mark 1:29-39) A mercy that is revealed through the humble Word of disciples concerning the Son of Man who was also the Son of God, who died on our behalf and rose again and is now seated at the right hand of God, the hand of mercy, and we wait, we wait for the Lord and continue to ride on the wings of an eagle, our Savior Jesus Christ. Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud for Bruce S. Severson, age 65, of Bowlus.

Bruce passed away February 3 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday.

Lorayne Primus

Lorayne Primus, 91 year old resident of Swanville died We d n e s d a y, January 31, at the Country Manor in Sartell.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, February 6, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. The burial was in the parish cemetery.

Lorayne (Winter) Primus was born on December 16, 1926, in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, to the late Walter and Veronica (Weyman) Winter. She attended rural country school until the eighth grade. After her schooling she helped her family on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Alcuin Primus on June 21, 1950, in Spring Hill. The couple made their home near Swanville on a farm.

Lorayne was a stay-at-home mom raising the couple’s 12 children. She was a very devout Catholic and faithfully prayed the rosary. Alcuin died in November of 1979.

Lorayne continued living on the farm near Swanville until December of 2010 when

Bruce was born September 25, 1952 in Hibbing, MN to Merle and Margaret (Schik) Severson. He served in the Peace Corps for three years in Morocco, Africa.

He worked for the City of St. Cloud Water Department for 26 years.

Bruce is survived by his daughters Michele Severson of Madison, WI and Nicole Severson of Duluth and granddaughter Loxley. Bruce is also survived by his brothers Gary (Shirley), Roger, Dennis (Jackie), Greg (Jean), Keith (Diane) and his sister Janice (Eric) Roller as well as many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and brothers Wayne, Richard, Dale and Ron Severson.

She attended many high school basketball games and other of her children’s activities. Lorayne was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the Mission Circle.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kenneth Primus of Little Falls, Joseph (Shirley) Primus of Bowlus, Steven Primus of Swanville, Mary Kay (Richard) Schmit of Fargo, ND, Robert (Kim) Primus of Holdingford, Daniel (Joni) Primus of Swanville, Jeffrey (DeAnna) Primus of Swanville, Patrick (Mary) Primus of Maple Lake, William (Kristin) Primus of Swanville, and Susan Feliciano of St. Cloud; daughter-in-law, Nancy Primus of Flensburg; son-inlaw, Chuck Heisick of St. Cloud and 33 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Joan Winter of WI and Bernadine Winter of Greenwald.

Glee L. Weiner, age 87 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully S a t u r d a y, February 3, 2018 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Life Celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 8, 2018 at River of Life Church in Sauk Centre with grandson, Pastor Alan Pastian officiating.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the beginning of Glee’s Life Celebration in River of Life Church, Sauk Centre.

Glee LoAnn Stevens was born February 16, 1930 in Long Prairie, Minnesota, the daughter of Lyle and Merry (DuFrene) Stevens. Glee grew up in the Little Sauk area and graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1948.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Theodore “Bud” Weiner on May 13, 1949 in Thomasville, Georgia. From this union, five children were born. Glee and Bud spent nearly 30 years delivering the Minneapolis Star & Tribune each afternoon in Sauk Centre and surrounding towns.

Glee was a very gifted woman. She loved music and became an accomplished pianist perfecting 3000 songs without ever

Tony was born in Paynesville, MN to Ray and Bernie (Theis) Thelen. After high school Tony worked as a cabinet maker and started bartending. In 1995 he established GoatRopers Bar and Grill in Farming, which he owned and operated

reading a note of music. Creative seemed to describe Glee – from artistic painting, doing intricate needlework, to decorating, she seemed to have a special knack. She also enjoyed writing and especially loved to create meaningful poetry. Song birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies were fascinating to Glee. One winter she had a hummingbird live in her home with her.

She had an extreme love for nature and especially enjoyed collecting beautiful autumn leaves and pressing them between pages in her books. Glee was constantly learning and memorizing. She had a passion for reading her Bible and writing each chapter out in her own handwriting.

Another passion was the study of words and meanings.

She recently became a member of Zion Lutheran Church and always appreciated Pastor Porter’s visits while she lived in the nursing home.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl (Alan) Pastian of Sauk Centre, Dennis Weiner of Grey Eagle, Kenneth (Jennifer) Weiner of Indianapolis, IN, Sharon Stevens of St. Cloud, and Steven (Melissa) Weiner of Hot Springs, AR; grandchildren, Alan Pastian, Brian Pastian, Shawneen Frieson, Holly Haverkost, Allison Weiner, Jessica Schramel and Kristin Fiedler; eleven great grandchildren; one brother, Lorel Stevens; other relatives and many friends.

Tony was instrumental in starting the annual Christmas Care Drive to benefit local families and enjoyed organizing groups for Christmas caroling at nursing homes on Christmas Eve. His passions included fishing, hunting, gardening, butchering, woodworking, antiques, and above all helping others anyway he could.

Survivors include his mother, Bernie; siblings, Tim, Kim (Kevin) Orbeck and their children, Katherine, Jack, and Samuel; Pete (Jill) and their children, Kylie, Ava, and Shelby; Jason and his children Nathan and Sarah.

Norbert A. Bruder

Norbert Bruder, age 88 of Long Prairie, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018 at the Long Prairie Hospital in Long Prairie, MN. Norbert was born on September 6, 1929 in Reynolds Township, Todd County, MN to George and Marie (Berendsen) Bruder.

He grew up on the farm in Reynolds Township and farmed with his parents.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955. He returned home and continued farming.

He married Evelyn Gardiner on February 18, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN. After a couple of years they bought a farm in Leslie Township, Todd County and moved to their home on top of the hill overlooking the Long Prairie River. They had four children (the first being identical twin boys) and raised their children and farmed there in Leslie Township for over 50 years.

As a faithful member of the St. Nicholas Church in Belle River, Norbert served two terms as a Trustee. He also was on the Clotho Creamery Board and for over 18 years was a Supervisor for the Leslie Township Board. Some of his favorite pastimes included hunting and

He was a kind and loving father, grandpa and brother who will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

CentraCare Health uses technology and talent to improve the customer experience through new communications platform CentraCare Connect gives customers more control, access and options, 24/7 CentraCare Health is overhauling the communications platform customers use to schedule primary care appointments and contact the organization.

The new platform, called CentraCare Connect, is designed to provide a more helpful and timely response to customers, 24-hours a day, every day. CentraCare Connect combines knowledgeable staff with new technology that helps the team effectively and efficiently respond to almost 50,000 calls that come into CentraCare each month.

CentraCare Connect is “going live” in phases, which started in spring 2017.

Revamping CentraCare’s communications platform, which serves six hospi-

tals and dozens of clinics across Central Minnesota, required streamlining operations, embracing technology and adding new staff. Thirty-two RNs were hired to help triage medical questions and direct people to the appropriate places for care.

A certified lactation counselor also is on staff to help breastfeeding mothers.

While having multiple resources like Urgency Centers, Pediatric walk-in care, Express Care and eClinics means more access to specialized care, it can also be confusing for people trying to determine where to go for their specific issue. CentraCare Connect helps remove the guesswork by having trained staff available to help customers navigate the health care system at all times.

In November 2017, CentraCare Connect answered 45,070 phone calls, of which 36,609 were scheduling-related requests. There were 5,461 triage calls where the team provided guidance to people who had care-related questions. And nearly 1,000 people utilized the chat and text functionality.

CentraCare Connect will continue to expand and evolve to meet the needs of customers, which will include introduction of a mobile-based app in the coming months.

“We strive to meet our customers where they are today,” said Macken-Marble. “By offering new and innovative ways to connect with CentraCare, we can deliver a better customer experience, which is our ultimate goal.”

The Kentucky Raider: Experiences during the Civil War UST Professor Emeritus Shares his Passion for Family History George Karvel, PhD, a retired University of St. Thomas business professor, a real estate expert, and a family history author, will present The Kentucky Raider at the Stearns History Museum’s Breakfast Club on Wednesday, February 14 at 9:00 a.m.

Karvel will share his passion for history, particularly Civil War history.

It all began for him as a small child, listening to stories at family gatherings about Commodore Perry Snell, a 2nd Kentucky Cavalry Private for the Confederate States of America. Relatives often discussed the soldier’s various adventures, pulling young George into the intriguing world of family history.

Karvel will relate these tales, particularly one when Union General Edward Henry Hobson was captured on a raid.

Snell would come into possession of the General’s order book during that engagement which essentially chronicled

Federal strategies against Confederate troop movements. After the war, Snell’s life spins into interesting relationships and family lore up through the present day. Please join us for this engaging presentation that weaves personal stories and varying perspectives into the larger American Civil War experience.

There is a fee for nonmembers. Refreshments will served. A commemorative Tech key chain will also be available for purchase. The Museum is located at 235 South 33rd Avenue in St. Cloud.
